Casabonkers
Tumblr media
Mort Drucker's 6-page "Casabonkers" story for Mad #300, 1991. Caricatures of Peter Lorre, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, etc., from "Casablanca":

(I know these are caricatures, but personally, I'd have liked a closer likeness to Peter Lorre's actual face. I was still so tickled to stumble upon this.)

YES thank you.
As if the viewing public would really believe Villainy Always Gets Its Just Rewards - that always pissed me off and more so because Peter Lorre needed to survive in more of his pictures. 😇
-The Baron surviving to play Le Chiffre.
-The Baron surviving to become an equally less-shot Paul Hyde and then Le Chiffre!
-And the Baron becoming this other baron.
Gorgeous imagery, as always. The sly, devil-may-care, yeah-I-may-die-for-this look up against the sadder & wiser survivor. Just don't push him too far...
Tumblr media
I never liked the idea of the Baron dying in Crack-Up, so in my head there is a sequel to the film featuring him surviving and continuing his espionage activities, played by an older Lorre

More marker drawings and it’s time for the Gruesome Twosome.
So in Wacky Races Lil’ and Big Gruesome are more or less expys of Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff respectively, with a bit of Béla Lugosi thrown into the mix with Lil’, so I just built more upon that in the Prohibition AU. Big Gruesome or Károly Groszmann (Károly as that was the closest name I could come up that was similar to Karloff, and fyi if you say that y at the end as an i you are saying it wrong, honey) is looking more like a Frankenstein’s monster, the drawing was also based on T. Wyatt Nelson’s of Karloff as the monster, because I really liked the hair. Lil’ Gruesome or Béla Groszmann was drawn based on an old photo of my very real papa in his military uniform, only Lil’ was part of the flamethrower unit in WWI. I’m still deciding on his rank and proper backstory.
And lastly the colored drawings is a very layered joke that combines the monsters from the cereal commercials and that one gag from Wacky Races ep two where the Gruesome brothers are the only one unimpressed by ghosts. I also did a last minute decision to add a scar to Károly’s cheek as a nod to another Gruesome Twosome from Arsenic.
If you’d like to see not Lorre and Karloff be fucked up criminal brothers then maybe consider reading my fic~ //twirls hair//

Happy 120th birthday to Peter Lorre!
Here is a small portrait I drew of him over the last week. The reference was a photo of him taken in the 1940s, I think.
Peter Lorre is in my top four favourite actors, I always love seeing him in a film. He’s also so fun to draw, he’s got such a great face! We share the same Zodiac sign too (Cancer the crab ♋)!

I’m pretty happy with how this drawing turned out, it’s probably my most accurate so far. I wish my shading had been a bit less grainy; I think it’s because I (accidentally) used a 2B to shade instead of an HB, which is what I usually use for portraits this size. The suit didn’t really come out how I wanted it too either - I wanted it to look more like the one in last year’s drawing. But I don’t hate it, it’s just always annoying when it doesn’t come out like I intended.
I did my best to copy his signature at the bottom.
2B, 3B and HB graphite and mechanical pencils and Lyra aquarelles on 160 gsm paper ✏️
Progress photos below cut.
Please don’t use or post on other websites without credit or permission, thanks 🙏
I decided to use a different guideline method as a base this time. Instead of starting with a circle and adding the jawline underneath which is what I usually do, I started off with a cross to get the right angle, then drew the outline around it. This turned out to be a lot quicker and somehow more accurate. Probably because I always spend way too long trying to draw a good circle in the right area of the page!

Hot damn! Love their faces, oh my gosh. A gorgeous line-up that I want to see etched in my kitchen or over a fireplace or something, with or without an appropriate motto.

Based on this sketch, and on the idea of the Casablanca cast getting transported/isekai’d to a fantasy realm, and me wanting an excuse to draw 17th century inspired clothing - voilà
From left to right: Ugarte dressed up nicely with the assasin’s guild emblem next to him, Rick and Sam in their 17th century tuxedos and the emblem of Sam’s café/tavern in between them, Captain Renault as flashy as he deserves to be with the guardsman’s emblem, and Ilsa Lund with her coat of arms. It was a fun drawing this!
