— okay this is critical of me so feel free to skip it but: a jumbo infected who not only sounds very different to all the others but moves slower - slower even than the little old lady who broke something trying to get at joel at the beginning - is not only less scary but a bit more in the realm of the fantastical than I expected. I get the miniboss vibe but it would be more in line with the others if he were just a regular infected but bigger - still those unnatural sharp movements, still that distinctive very scary sound, kinda maintaining the brand they've shown us so far, y'know? instead we kinda have a generic fantasy troll thing, and to my mind that's a shame.

* after talking with a friend and checking the transcripts, I realised that what kathleen probably did to win her people's loyalty was orchestrating the assault to take the area from fedra after they killed her brother. she isn't a charismatic leader (I think that's part of what she meant when she said she wasn't beautiful like her brother), but a victory like that could win her a lot of respect.

and her interactions with her second in command - perry - still surprise me. it's a little bit of a queen-and-loyal-knight dynamic: she trusts him with her weaknesses and worries, he stays unquestioningly faithful - and more or less even dies for her in the end. and I could see him being a decent leader of militia types. it could also be that the others follow her because they follow and trust him.

My fingers brush over the shiny pages of Savage Starlight. Ellie quietly hums along while tapping her foot on her space themed bed cover.

" Fuck no. " Ellie mutters, flipping the page of the comic. " That ass. " She whispers.

A small grin makes its way onto my face. Ellie's habit of talking to herself while reading her comics is the funniest thing.

I finish the book and turn to look at my best friend. Her brows furrow in concentration. Her top teeth softly bite down on her lower lip, her gaze focused on the pages in front of her. She lets out a sigh and shuts the comic, glancing over at me. " I can't believe we have to wait until next month for the next book. I need to know now! " Ellie complains with a huff.

" I know! " I turn my gaze up at the ceiling. " At least we have the rest of the books to re-read. "

Ellie hums in agreement. " What should we do now? Joel's not going to be home for another hour. He's bringing pizza. "

Ellie's adoptive father was working a late shift at the auto shop he worked at.

" Nice! " I sit up and turn to her. " Guess what I snagged from my sister. " I smirk while pulling open my brightly colored backpack.

" Um uh a dog? "

I roll my eyes. " Why the hell would I keep a dog in my backpack for so long, Ellie. "

Ellie shrugs and leans back against her headboard. " Variety is the spice of life. "

I chuckle. " What the fuck. "

I pull out a teen magazine. " It's a girl magazine thing! My sister has like seventy of these from when she was younger. I found them when I was snooping around this morning! " I grin while flipping through the pages. I open up to a page of Justin Bieber. " Justin Bieber is in like almost all of these! "

Ellie crinkles her nose. " Bro not Justin. "

I roll my eyes and toss one of the magazines to her. " I thought we could look at them. "

We flip through the pages of the magazines. We take some quizzes (All of which Ellie makes fun of) and read some of the advice.

" How To Kiss " Ellie reads out loud. " What the hell. " She goes to turn the page.

" Wait! Let's read it. " I reach for the magazine.

" Why? It's not like you have a boyfriend. " Ellie smirks.

I glare at the girl. " Fuck you, Ellie. I just want to read it, okay? Who knows, we might need that in the future? "

" Fine. " Ellie sighs. " Fine. "

The two of you huddle around the brightly colored magazine.

1. Build up to the kiss.

2. Make sure the kiss has your, and the other party’s, consent.

3. Start things slow.

4. Keep your mouth soft and relaxed.

5. Switch your area of focus and/or your speed.

6. Speaking of area of focus — move things away from their lips.

7. Go easy on the tongue.

8. Don’t overthink it.

9. Talk about it afterward!

" Doesn't sound that hard. I literally could've told you that. " Ellie mutters. " Kissing isn't a hard concept. "

I continue on reading through the different categories. " But like, it seems hard. How do you know if the other person likes it? "

Ellie grabs a small ball from her bedside table and starts throwing it up into the air. " They'll probably tell you. "

" Have you had your first kiss? " I ask while watching the other girl curiously. She would've told me if she'd been kissed, right? I mean, we tell each other everything. It's always been that way, always will be that way.

Ellie pauses throwing the ball and glances down at me. " No. " She admits, a small blush crawling onto her cheeks. " But I mean, kissing can't be that hard. It's like...common sense. People do it all the time. "

I frown. " What if I'm a bad kisser? "

" You won't be. " Ellie shakes her head. " Stop reading that shit, it's getting in your head. Let's just do something else. Like watch a movie or something. "

" Seriously tho, El. What if I'm a bad kisser. What if the person I kiss is so horrified by my kissing, they leave me? " A million scenarios run through my head.

Ellie lets out a groan. " Oh my god. Will you just stop. You're going to be a fine kisser. " Ellie meets your gaze. " Look, if...if you want to...we could like I don't know. Practice or something. " A tinge of red spreads over Ellie's cheeks. She avoids my gaze, instead staring straight at the magazine.

I look at her in shock. Kissing Ellie? I'd be lying if I said I never had thoughts of kissing her before...but everyone has thoughts, right? I mean Ellie's eyes are some of the prettiest I've ever seen. She's definitely attractive. But I like boys. I think. Plus Ellie's not gay. Right?

Ellie shifts uncomfortably. " Never mind, that was-that was stupid of me to offer. Let's just watch a show-"

" No. " I shake my head. " Let's do it. I mean, we both need practice. " Suddenly it feels like my heart starts pounding faster. My fingers feel the urge to fidget with something out of pure anxiety.

Ellie nods and moves the magazine to the side. She positions herself in front of me, on her knees. Ellie eyes meet with mine before she glances down at the magazine, obviously looking over the steps.

I'm about to comment on her hypocrisy when she suddenly puts her hand on my chin. She draws her face close to mine. Her minty breath fans over my mouth, causing me to freeze in anticipation.

Ellie slowly leans in. In seconds, I feel her warm lips on mine.

My heart feels like it explodes. Butterflies seem to soar around my stomach, confusing me. What am I feeling? What is this? How is this happening?

My eyes study Ellie's relaxed face. Her eyes are closed. Her long brown lashes rest peacefully on her cheeks. Deciding to follow her lead, I try to relax. I close my eyes and follow her slow mouth movements.

All worries and thoughts of mine seem to melt away. What are the steps again? I don't remember?

We spend who knows how long kissing before Ellie starts to speed up. She places a small kiss on the corner of my lip before pulling away panting.

The loss of her lips leaves a pit of disappoints in my stomach. I ignore it and look up at her eyes.

An unfamiliar expression is sprawled on her face. Maybe realization?

" That was.." Ellie begins.

" Not bad. " I grin.

Ellie chuckles. " Yeah. Not bad. " Ellie shuts off the radio and turns on the small tv on her dresser. " What should we watch? "

We never kissed again after that. Things remained the same. Ellie and I still hung out every Friday at her house to read comics and watch movies. We sat together at school with Dina and Jesse.

The only things that changed were my feelings. I started to develop a crush on Ellie, not that I could ever act on it. Ellie didn't like me back.

It wouldn't matter anyways. Ellie's sister Sarah ended up getting really sick, causing Ellie's family to move to another state to get better care for her. Somewhere along the line we stopped talking. Slowly, calls every day turned to calls once a week and eventually to once a year.

I get it. Life goes on. I'm in the past. Friendships die. Nothing lasts forever.

I can’t stop thinking about...

How every single group of people shown to us in the show adaptation of TLOU - excluding Jackson - has adopted one if not more of the methods for control used by FEDRA that they all deemed to be so horrific. It’s just another way that this series plays with the themes of justification and morality and power, and another reason why this show works as well as it does on so many levels. Putting my rambles under the cut to save anyone from spoilers: 

In Kansas City, Kathleen promises her prisoners a trial, and then gives the command to have them executed without one. She also gives the order to have Perry burn the bodies instead of bury them, because its “faster”. We see both public executions and body burning in the Boston QZ, so this is straight out of FEDRAs playbook, which isn’t surprising considering how little time has passed since the rebel group took control of the city. But as an outsider, it’s hard to say “the good guys” won there, because those “good guys” immediately defaulted to the same things and actions that they rebelled over. 

In Silver Lake, David tries to dangle the promise of success and power in front of Ellie, just like the FEDRA officer did when he told her that one day she could be in charge. (I could write a whole dissertation on how extraordinarily fucked up and manipulative David is - DO NOT even get me started on the “violent heart” discussion - but for now I’m just going to talk about power dynamics. He’s very much one of those “this would all fall apart without me” kind of leaders, which diminishes the lives and contributions of the people in his group - just like FEDRA officers look at themselves as the heroes for keeping “order” (if you can call it that) despite the fact that it is the QZ citizens who do all of the actual work. It’s narcissism, and that never works as an effective leadership method. 

In Salt Lake, Marlene and the Fireflies pull the exact same shit with Ellie as the FEDRA officers do with that kid that wanders into the QZ. They tell that kid that everything will be fine, that they’ll get to have a treat and a toy and all will be well, when in reality they’re going to kill him. (Yes, I understand the child was infected and there was likely nothing to be done and termination was the “safest” way to control the spread of infection. I am highlighting the act of lying - and to an extent, handwashing - here.) This is the same thing that happens when Ellie shows up at the hospital. Marlene tells her that Joel will be fine, that she can see him after. She doesn’t tell her the truth or give her a choice. She lies so that she can force things to go her/their way, and, I think, to pat herself on the back for doing a good job of not scaring Ellie. (Again, I could go OFFFFFFFFF about Marlene in general but that would be a tangent all its own.) 

Jackson is the only settlement that we’ve seen that isn’t employing FEDRA techniques, and its no surprise that its the only one that is thriving. And if only 1/4 groups of people is able to keep from immediately turning ugly, then... well, I already agree with what Joel did, but this statistic only makes me agree with him more in that I’m not sure that world is worth saving either.

When Michael and I were little, this room seemed so big. I was really scared of thunder, so when there was a storm… Michael told me that this wasn’t a room at all. Dear Bug

First off, I hope you're doing good! And if you aren't, I'm sorry and hope it gets better. I don't know how it is for you, but with the weather and darkness of winter still being persistent on staying for a while or so, I feel like it affects how people perceive their days and whatnot. Like seasonal... something?

Big news, I have an update on my Pedro journey!!! That's what we're calling this now btw.

Okay so, I have already seen some clips of tlou in general, but I am squeamish by stuff like blood, viruses, or anything that is slightly... sick-y...? I hope that makes sense. I know that whenever there's a project with this kind of theme, they use prosthetics, but it still makes me a bit iffy.

So what did I do? Well I went ahead and watched Prospect since it's already on HBO, or Max, or whatever they call it this month. And GOODNESS GRACIOUS I LOVED IT??? I had no idea Sophie Thatcher was in it until I looked at the cast and saw her name. I've seen clips of her in so many other movies and shows, and she seems so talented. Also, she's beautiful in a very haunting way, but like a kind haunt.

ANYWAYS back to prospect. The scene of Ezra using the field kit and whatever else was happening... Olivia Wilde nodding GIF again. I can't do this. I kept rewatching it because ugh. I can't even explain what I felt... but imagine fireworks that turn into a bunch of exclamation marks as Katy Perry's song "Birthday" mashed up with Zayn's "Pillowtalk" plays. That's what I felt. I'll be thinking ab how he sat in that scene for a few days 😌 Yeah... So thank you very much for suggesting that. Now the real question is if you plan to write for Ezra again... because if you ever feel like doing it, just letting you know I'm waving a lot to make sure you see I will cheer and clap.

While we're talking about Pedro, I think tiktok is catching onto me because now I'm just getting edits of Gladiator 2, and I don't know what to do with that. Like do we watch the first to see the sequel? Is the sequel good? I have not seen anyone talk about it after release for some reason???

Now I'm sort of stuck.. because what to do now...what do I watch? I've technically started GoT but Jesus I am so confused because it seems so complicated. I've never even tried getting into Star Wars. The same goes for Marvel. Because it's all so developed and intimidating to try and fall into later on.

I saw a comedy in there somewhere while looking through what he has been in. It's called the uninvited, I'm gonna try and hunt that down and see. But until then, I worry we are at a halt. Tragic, yes I know, I am as upset as anyone else is.

Also about the animals in the sun thing. I get the same feeling when there are candles or just light in multicolored lanterns or whatever you call them and the little shine of colour comes through. Just happiness and giddiness like oooh beautiful small things we should appreciate more wow I love life.

Man, it is so special to hear from you. It’s been a mixed bag today. Lotta good, some bad. Feeling pretty congested right now and also sleepy! Very sleepy. And it’s only 6:20. My fault for being up at 4 am though. I know what you’re talking about though, seasonal affective disorder. It’s very common and if you’re (or anyone reading) experiencing it, I am hugging you. It’s tough but we will see our beautiful sun again soon!

I totally understand being squeamish. I am super fucking squeamish with blood/gore/injury/needles. God forbid I deal with something irl, or I’m fucked. But I’m like you. So 👏 gladiator II. I’m gonna be honest, wasn’t into it. It really let me down. I would advise if you watch it, do watch the original first. However…I don’t think gladiator II holds a candle to the first movie. Was everyone hot and slutted out, absolutely. And there were exciting moments for sure. But personally, I felt that the story fell flat, and I think Pedro’s character was pretty uninteresting. But that’s what fic is for 😉😌 I felt like Pedro was used for promo tbh 😳🫣 I cannot say enough good things about the original, though. It was a really awesome movie.

Also, if you’re taking recs, maybe you’ve seen it idk - A Real Pain!! That was my favorite movie from 2024 🩵

I couldn’t help you out on GoT or Mando 🫣😭 sorry!!! I tried Mando years ago and found it boring. I’ve been burnt the fuck out on Star Wars anyway, cause I think they succumbed to the same Disneyification treatment that marvel got. Quantity over quality. I hear season 1 is awesome, maybe you’ll love it, I didn’t stick with it. More to your point with marvel, it very much has become a thing that’s inaccessible for people who’ve never engaged with that cinematic universe before, but it’s also fucking inaccessible to the average fan! I don’t have anything nice to say about marvel at this point. They had their bangers but they’ve been putting out dogshit for the better part of 5-6 years now. And I’ve never seen GoT. As a squeamish girl, I know that show is not for me.

I also haven’t seen the uninvited. I believe something weird happened with the release date?? Idk. Idk!! But. You may like narcos, I think that’s a very good and interesting show and Pedro is super fuckin hot in that. And check out Triple Frontier - not my favorite movie, but there’s many good fics about Pedro’s character in that movie. You can also try the unbearable weight of massive talent, where Pedro plays a lovable super fan of nick cage. And kingsman golden circle!! He’s a neat character in that movie too.
