Richard Barber on early iterations of Tristan and Iseult in The Knight and Chivalry (2000), pp. 105-106.
Barber references A.T. Hatto's translation of Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan: With the Surviving Fragments of the 'Tristan' of Thomas and Alan Fedrick's translation of The Romance of Tristan (Béroul).
[Yet the romances need not necessarily have taken this particular course. The earliest exemplars are retellings of Classical history, and the first 'Celtic' romance is the Tristan, is a tale of what we would now call passionate love. It exists in two early versions, both fragmentary, by Béroul and Thomas, poets writing in the middle years of the twelfth century, one Norman, one Anglo-Norman. Later writers confused the story of Tristan and Iseult with the ideas of courtly love, but the original version is not courtly. Its idea of love as an overwhelming, dark, supernatural and tragic force is at loggerheads with the troubadours' concepts. Indeed, in the troubadours' terms, Tristan actually loses pretz by falling in love with Iseult; and there is little cortesia in his actions. We are in a new world, a world of myth rather than manners. The figures of Tristan, Iseult and Mark are close to their Celtic kin of the Irish legends. The tension in Tristan arises from Tristan's dual allegiance: to Iseult through love, to Mark through duty, exactly the conflict which the troubadour poets so carefully avoid. Here the bonds of love and the bonds of the feudal world are in open opposition, and the scrupulous, not to say artificial, constructs of the poets'philosophy of love are swept away by its reality.
The fate of the story of Tristan and Iseult is instructive. It disappeared in the thirteenth century into a huge compilation of other romances, the Prose Tristan, on which Malory drew for his account of Tristram in the Morte Darthur. By the time the story reached him, the tension between Mark and Tristram is caused not by Isode, but by the wife of one Sir Segwarides, whom they both love before Isode is wedded to Mark. Isode is no more than Tristram's lady; the passion that sings through earlier and later versions of the tale has vanished. It is not a suitable subject for chivalric romance, because chivalric love does not make passion its ideal; instead, devotion, fidelity, service are its lodestars, inherited from the troubadours' concern with those restraints which prevent love from becoming passionate.]

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

gotta give it to the percy jackson fans, you really do love your main character. for other franchises, fans usually place the #1 blorbo title on a specific side character. but in percy jackson you really love your percy jackson

the pjo fandom on tumblr vs tiktok is so funny cause we've all (or most of us) have already read the entire series, we know what's going to happen so we can see the parallels and the tragedy behind it but on tiktok???
they're in love with Luke
they think he's so kind and nice and its wonderful he's percy's friend, there's no way that he'd be evil - I've seen theories that annabeth is going to be the one who betrays percy (prior to ep4)
the tonal shift is insane and I can't wait to see all these first time viewers lose their fucking minds

headcanon that percy is historically hard to beat at monopoly. and it's intially the most mind-boggling thing ever watching him turn the tide of a game. because he's definitely losing at the beginning. but percy is not only an amazing strategist. he has a deep understanding of money and knows how and when to bet on the board. he knows when to test his luck. and he's amazing at getting into people's head.

this is my roman empire. and after all these years, i finally have to say something.
GRUNT-WHIMPER??? GRUNT-WHIMPER!!!!???
ANNABETH GIRL ARE YOU OKAY??
forget her just standing there gasping for air. forget her very audible sigh. forget the fact that annabeth initiates 80% of their kisses and literally has to restrain herself from kissing him in front of all of New Rome in MoA. i could go on and on about how many times percy calls her beautiful and attractive (let’s not forget how his heart races and his skin tingles at her touch) and all his boyfriend-ly thoughts about her, but lets focus on annabeth for a sec. BECAUSE ANNABETH CHASE IS GRUNT-WHIMPERING??
our girl was feeling ALL the things in this scene. she’s so weak in the knees for him that she can’t even hide it in front of piper. also percy must be a fantastic kisser? BECAUSE GRUNT-WHIMPER??
do not EVER tell me percy and annabeth don’t have romantic feelings for each other. do not EVER tell me it’s purely platonic. if you’re someone who thinks “nah i can’t see them getting married and having kids cause i don’t think they feel that way about each other” you clearly did not read about the grunt-whimper (well, you can hc whatever you want. i respect all opinions. but i do think you need to re-consider and account for the grunt-whimper)
BECAUSE GRUNT-WHIMPER?? ONE GOOD KISS FROM PERCY IS MAKING ANNABETH CHASE GRUNT-WHIMPER?? IS THAT RICK’S “CHILD-APPROPRIATE” WAY OF SAYING SHE MOANED?? HE SHOULD HAVE JUST SAID SHE MOANED. GRUNT-WHIMPER IS SO MUCH WORSE. THAT GOES SO FAR BEYOND A MOAN. A MOAN IS TAME COMPARED TO A GRUNT-WHIMPER.
GUYS I-

Something I think about a lot is how Rick Riordan very rarely uses "girlfriend/boyfriend" to refer to Percy and Annabeth within their perspectives. They're so intertwined, even Annabeth says in hoh that the word boyfriend isn't strong enough, because Percy was a part of her. They are a singular soul, too wrapped around each others' fates that regular labels are far too weak for them. But, Rick Riordan uses "boyfriend" a lot in Nico and Wills perspectives, not because they love each other less than percabeth, but to show how much the word means to them. Nico uses it any chance he gets- "his boyfriend," "he actually had a boyfriend," because Nico has never been able to say that before. Their struggle with their queer identities mixed with Nico's catholic guilt and chronic everyone-hates-me disease makes the fact that he has someone to call his actual boyfriend so much more important to his character development.

“How is 12 year old Annabeth head of the Athena cabin??”
1. Demi gods have the life expectancy of a lemming.
2. Gifted kids often burn out by age 16 & I doubt any of the Athena teens have the energy or desire to argue with their little sister who willingly takes care of all the family paperwork.

yet another fascinating tidbit from richard barber is wolfram von eschenbach being so unimpressed with the quality of the other poets at hermann of thuringia's court that he thought sir kay would improve the place by throwing them all out

People talk about how “overpowered” and freaky some of the physical feats in PJO and HOO are but I think people forget that all demigods inherently have enhanced, speed, agility, and strength. So at lot of these physical feats actually make a lot of sense in their “power scaling.”
And I know a lot of people like talk about the Lois Arc jump because that is insane but there are a lot of other feats that show off the enhanced attributes some of the other demigods have.
Like, Hazel ran after a Arion, the fastest horse alive for a WHOLE day. Hours upon hours on end. And even if Arion WASN’T the fastest horse he’s still. A horse. That Hazel was able to keep up with. And then run all the way home.
Reyna EASILY knocks away giant werewolves with a knife and used her javelin like a pole vault. Annabeth managed to fight Kronos, a whole ass Titan, to a standstill. And she’s been shown to perform moves only professional acrobatic and gymnast can do. Piper threw a fifty pound shield at Medea and was described to move fast as a viper.
Jason had dodged arrows that have appeared out of no where, no warning, and Percy has side stepped bullets. BULLETS.
Not to mention that with the Lycaon and werewolves they were all out running and keeping up with WOLVES.
So, yeah, demigods have freaky physical feats.

Okay, Tumblr.
In the light of the recent Percy Jackson show (and ignoring the fact that I have to read Goethe's Faust for school), I am challenging you all and especially you reading this.
14k notes by the 1st of April and I will read all of the Percy Jackson series' books that my sibling owns.
I think they go up to the Apollo series? So, like. ~20 books.
edit:
1. Sadly, my sibling doesn't have all of the books. They have pjo, hoo and toa. Having counted them, I will admit that there are only 15 books. Sorry for the confusion, guys, my bad. But if they are as good as everyone is telling me, I might order the rest anyways.
2. I'll extend the deadline to May 25th because I have exams and school is seriously kicking my ass. Either way, I would probably start reading around then anyways.
3. The original post said 14k notes. There was an update post, which said 20k and I'll live blog me reading it as well. Twas' me, being stupid. Or sleep deprived. Probably both. Y'all get to 10k and I'll live blog it during summer.
The Riordanverse (?) (is that what you call yourselves?) sounds like a lot of fun :D thank you for actually reading this and introducing me to a new world to explore. Drink some water, get a snack, and good scrolling to the further lands of Tumblr!
