Billecart Salmon and Haut Brion! We tasted through the spectacular Billecart Salmon lineup last night! My favorites were the 06 Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Louis, and the 02 and 06 Cuvee Nicolas Francois. The 06 Nicolas is in a great spot and already drinking incredibly well. The 02 is still a bit young and a bigger, more powerful version that will only get continue to improve (even though it’s already excellent)! We finished the tasting with a tremendous bottle of 1982 Billecart Salmon! The 82 was simply stunning with a rich gold color, plenty of mouthwatering acidity and a long, complex finish. After that there was an avalanche of excellent reds opened. First, we blinded a beautiful ‘92 Eyrie Pinot Noir that most people guessed was Burgundy. The 01 Haut Brion, while still a bit young, was outstanding and evolved rapidly in the glass. We finished off with the stellar 00 Penfolds Grange, which featured gorgeous, ripe dark fruit and the telltale Eucalyptus aromatics. The iconic 1998 Penfolds Grange is in a great spot right now! It is still somewhat youthful in that tertiary notes have not yet developed, but the tannins are smooth and soft and the ripe, generous blackberry fruit still explodes from the glass, making it a delight to drink now! Consisting of Shiraz (97%) and only 3% Cabernet, the aromatics were a complex mix of blackberry, savory spices and only a slight green note that seemed more like tobacco then eucalyptus.
