David Raya's Heroics Help Arsenal Secure Draw in Champions League Opener
David Raya produced an astonishing double save to deny Mateo Retegui’s penalty as Arsenal earned a hard-fought draw against Atalanta in their Champions League opener.
Tumblr media
The Spanish goalkeeper made a low save to his right to keep out Retegui’s spot-kick, and then, incredibly, scrambled across his line to stop the striker’s rebound header. This moment of brilliance stood out in an otherwise uneventful match in Bergamo, where clear chances were few and far between.
Raya's heroics were the only major action of note, as Arsenal struggled to create opportunities. They went without a shot for nearly an hour, from the 18th to the 75th minute. Atalanta, last season’s Europa League winners, also managed just two shots on target — both coming in a double save by Marco Carnesecchi, who denied Bukayo Saka’s free-kick and then blocked Thomas Partey’s follow-up.
Raya’s Game-Changing Double Save
The game’s pivotal moment came when Thomas Partey clipped Ederson in the box, leading to a penalty for Atalanta. After a long VAR review, the decision stood, and Mateo Retegui stepped up to take the spot-kick. Raya, after consulting with Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, pulled off a spectacular double save. He first parried the penalty and then raced across his goal to claw away Retegui’s follow-up header, preventing a certain goal.
Raya's save is being hailed as one of the best in recent memory, drawing comparisons to Arsenal legend David Seaman’s iconic save against Sheffield United in the 2003 FA Cup semi-final.
A Valuable Point for Arsenal
Despite the lack of attacking spark, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will likely be satisfied with the point, considering the quality of their opponents and the busy week ahead, with Premier League fixtures against Tottenham and Manchester City. Atalanta, with their European pedigree, are a tough side, making the draw a credible result for the Gunners.
Gabriel Jesus captained the side in the absence of injured skipper Martin Odegaard, with Kai Havertz featuring in midfield. However, clear chances were few for Arsenal, aside from Saka and Havertz's early efforts and Gabriel Martinelli’s two shots over the bar.
As Arsenal shifts focus to their crucial match against Manchester City, Raya’s remarkable performance will remain a highlight, giving the Gunners a solid start in their Champions League campaign.
Player of the Match: David Raya

Does the mass-murdering criminal Jason "Red Hood" Todd canonically support the death penalty?
No, I can't find evidence that Red Hood supports the death penalty.
There is a difference between murder (illegal) and state-sanctioned killing (legal). Red Hood commits unlawful homicide. The death penalty is lawful homicide. Jason is a murderer. The death penalty is not legally considered murder. Commissioner Jim Gordon is a decorated military veteran, not a murderer.
Committing violence ≠ wanting the government to have the right to commit that violence. Batman and his allies brutalize criminals; they don't necessarily support the state brutalizing criminals. Red Hood kills some criminals; Red Hood doesn't necessarily support the state killing criminals. Catwoman doesn't necessarily support the state committing burglary. Et cetera.
The death penalty is administered by the criminal legal system. Jason does not like the criminal legal system (see some of his run-ins with the police). He grew up as an impoverished child who didn't believe in the system, he was raised by Batman to believe that vigilantes can make a difference that the system can't, and he became an adult criminal who still doesn't believe in the system. He's not interested in using the criminal legal system. He isn't interested in giving more powers and privileges to an abusive system that has wronged him and the people he cares about.
When Jason started up his villain business, the death penalty was legal in Gotham City. (See Detective Comics #644, The Joker: Devil's Advocate, Batgirl 2000 #19, Punchline #1.) The death penalty was also in place during his Robin run. Jason didn't argue in favor of the state having the right to kill prisoners, and the death penalty never addressed his complaints about the status quo.
Jason has rescued people from wrongful* imprisonment and the death penalty. Again, based on his own firsthand experiences, he has many reasons to believe that the system is broken. *Some of us would argue that locking any people in prisons tends to be wrongful and inhumane by default, but we could choose to accept and critique the standard premises of crime fiction as entertainment without endorsing it as moral instruction.
Jason Todd is a criminal: a mass murderer, a terrorist, a villain. He does evil. He doesn't represent or support the legal system. He probably has the least political capital out of all the Batfamily-associated characters. He doesn't promote the death penalty. He commits murder—illegally, as a criminal, state-unapproved.
Some recent comics related to the topic:
Gotham Nights (2020) #11 "One Minute After Midnight", written by Marc Guggenheim
Red Hood and Nightwing team up to investigate the case of a man wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to be executed. Both of them disapprove of how the broken criminal legal system botched this case.

Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #8 (2023), written by Matthew Rosenberg
"You familiar with Hannah Arendt's concept of Schreibtischtäter? Desk murderers? It's people who use the state to kill for them, so they don't have to get their hands dirty."

Marcellus Williams is scheduled to be executed on September 24 for a crime DNA proves he did not commit. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney reviewed these DNA results and filed a motion to vacate Mr. Williams’s conviction because he believed the DNA results proved by clear and convincing evidence that Mr. Williams did not commit this crime. Although the circuit court has not yet scheduled a hearing to address this motion–and no court has ever considered the new exculpatory evidence — the Missouri Supreme Court set an execution date for Mr. Williams.
Marcellus’ legal team, including lawyers from the Innocence Project and Midwest Innocence Project, said they “will continue to fight for Mr. Williams’ exoneration and seek a hearing on the prosecutor’s motion to vacate.

From an email of Death Penalty Action:
"We know that ending the Death Penalty is not a priority for the vast majority of people, even those who oppose it. Here's another truth: The number of people who choose how to vote based on how a candidate stands on the death penalty is minuscule. Therefore, it absolutely does not help to force the issue in a public way. That's why today we begin a low key campaign to remind President Biden of his promise to end the federal death penalty.
"I woke up this morning to an e-mail from Sister JoAn, who wrote:
"As a Catholic sister (nun), I am not able to donate. I pray for Death Penalty Action, your staff and all involved with abolition work.
"Question: What is keeping us from bombarding Pres. Biden with phone calls, emails, snail mail letters asking him to keep his promise of ending death row and executions at the Federal Level. I understood that during his campaign he said he was going to do that. I am praying and hoping he can make that happen during his last months in office.
"Sister JoAn is absolutely right. The only thing keeping us from putting our faith and our morals into action is us, ourselves. There is no reason to hold back, so for the next 11 weeks, we must urgently and persistently remind President Biden of his promise to do all that he can to take the death penalty off the table for the next president- and to not wait until January to do so.
"Here's the address:
"President Joe Biden, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20500.
"You can also send an electronic message here."
-
To the Democrat-voting American Tumblr users: please help by sending President Biden a message asking him to keep his promise to end federal death penalty. He is still the president, he can do this and he promised to do this.

Unethical Executions in April
Micheal Smith is being executed in Alabama despite having an intellectual disability that would disqualify him from the death penalty in any other state. The only reason he is still being executed is because of a few confusing technicalities in Oklahoma law.
Petitions Here:
Letter Writing Campaigns for oklahoma residents here:
Missouri is slated to execute Brian Dorsey despite his claims of ineffective counsel and the fact that he is picture of remorse and rehabilitation: he turned himself over to the police and pled guilty, has had a flawless prison record, currently resides in the honor ward while working as a prison barber (a highly coveted job only given to trust worthy inmates), and has about 60 prison staff members advocating for the commutation of his sentence.
