so, you've been considering getting into hermitcraft.

that's great! welcome! we are an extremely enthusiastic fandom, i admit, but we are very happy to have you watching the hermits! however, with over a decade of existence and twenty-seven current hermits, it can feel very intimidating to get into hermitcraft. luckily, as of the time of this posting--january 31st, 2024--it's also the BEST time to get into hermitcraft, because a new season starts on february 3rd! (and if you're reading this later: don't worry. this is ALSO the best time to get into hermitcraft. don't worry about it i'll get into that.)

the shortest version of this advice is: start wherever you want, with whoever you want. it doesn't matter, you can catch up.

still, it can seem like a lot. so, from someone who's been around since mid season seven, here is a more detailed guide on how to start watching hermitcraft!

what is hermitcraft?

hermitcraft is a collection of people who all play on the same survival multiplayer minecraft server. that server is a mostly vanilla minecraft server; i don't really call hermitcraft "vanilla" anymore, as they rely on a number of largely cosmetic mods, but the things they do on hermitcraft should, broadly, all be possible in vanilla minecraft, and the server still "feels" vanilla, so. vanilla minecraft. they do this in "seasons", which are periods of time between a year and two years, after which they reset and start on a fresh server.

in comparison to something like qsmp or even the life series, hermitcraft leans heavily on the "building cool things and hanging out" side of the spectrum as opposed to the roleplay side. however, at least once a season the hermits like to do a big storyline; sometimes, it's more frequent. many of the storylines are more natural escalations of things like server prank wars or a failing server economy, though, as opposed to things that are clearly in-universe roleplaying. don't worry, though; you'll know a hermitcraft storyline when you see it. by everyone's bad acting. also, by rendog putting on a silly accent.

if your only impression of hermitcraft has been from the fandom, you... probably have a somewhat mistaken impression. my bad. in my defense, i am a horror writer at heart, and in the fandom's defense, a LOT of crossover has happened with the life series fandom, which leads to both sort of leaking into each other. in general, expect things to be on the lighthearted goofy shenanigans side with very few exceptions when you're actually watching hermitcraft, despite the way the fandom tends to be.

where is hermitcraft?

broadly, youtube! hermitcraft is an almost entirely video series, and if you want to watch a hermitcrafter, you will almost certainly need to watch them on youtube. there are only very rarely streamed hermitcraft events, and these are normally announced ahead of time.

what if i prefer twitch?

skip the rest of this and just watch joe hills. i promise i'm not saying that because i'm a joe hills guy; i'm saying it because he's the only hermit that consistently streams from hermitcraft. impulse, tango, cleo, pearl, xisuma, iskall, and hypno all also appear to stream fairly regularly, but it's not always from hermitcraft.

where should i start?

now, that's the real question, isn't it? my answer is simple: start Now. if you're reading this as i post it, that means start this saturday on everyone's episode one. if you're reading this long after i post it, though, just... go ahead and start with whoever you want to watch's latest episode! the nice thing about hermitcraft is that you can GENERALLY jump in wherever you want.

but what about old seasons?

you do not need to watch older seasons of hermitcraft. unless you want to, of course; the world is your oyster and they are very good! however, there's also a LOT of old hermitcraft, and if you want to join in with what hermitcraft is doing now, old seasons aren't necessary. very little carries over from season to season. while sometimes old "lore" or recurring bits can carry references over, and the relationships between hermits will often carry over to some extent (if often not in the same patterns), it is never to an extent that you need the old seasons for context. each season is a clean new slate, and where "lore" carries over, the relevant hermit will almost always explain it to you.

what about helsknight/evil x/hotguy/boatem/convex/some other thing i've been hearing about?

i promise, if they are relevant to this season, they will explain it to you in the relevant episode and/or it will be easy enough to pick up. do not worry about it. each season is a soft reset for a reason, and one of those reasons is to make it easier on new viewers! and if you're here because you WANTED one of those specific things... ask an older fan! they'll be able to direct you to the places they're from.

do i need to watch all the hermits?

absolutely not! in fact, i strongly recommend you don't. there are going to be... hold on let me count... twenty-seven hermits? (i am bad at counting don't quote me on this) in this season alone. keeping up with all those videos is too much for basically anyone! instead, pick a few hermits that you like best, and if you want to keep up with everyone else, go to the hermitcraft recap youtube channel and watch that! it is a vital hermitcraft resource where pixlriffs, zloyxp, and lyarrah all watch every single hermit so that we don't have to. honor their sacrifice and don't try to watch everyone.

but how do i pick someone?

few ways! there exist, if you google, plenty of "choosing your hermit pov" quizzes; if you head over to the hermitcraft subreddit, for example, i'll be SHOCKED if they don't have one, and if you go over to the recap channel, they had one of those for a while too. this is the starting place for many people.

another way is to watch the recap and choose whoever's project interests you most. for early episodes, this may be hard, but since hermits tend to go hard for their first episode, you'll normally at least be able to pick up a sense of pace and build style.

just watching whoever it is your friends are obsessed with is also a tried and true method of finding your first hermit; frequently, like with the recap, this is a good method for then figuring out whose style you like best, and switching to them, if you don't end up clicking with the same people your friends click with.

finally, you can just... click a random hermit's channel! try a few out! maybe you heard about decked out and want to watch tango; maybe there's a storyline you want to start watching because the dash has been rambling about it; maybe you just want to know who this grain character is. clicking around until you find the guy whose editing you click with is a totally valid strategy!

that sounds hard. just pick someone for me.

if you like well-edited shenanigans: grian or mumbo jumbo. (these are also good starter hermits in general, i've found; if you aren't sure where else to start, start with one of them.)

if you like long background noise-type videos: docm77

if you like minigames: tangotek.

if you like a chill video: xbcrafted or, if the texture pack gets you, vintagebeef.

if you like storylines: rendog or grian, again. (i was trying not to double-up, but if you're here from an rp-heavy server, grian remains a great entry point in that regards.)

if you like to see something new and bizarre: zedaph if you prefer highly-edited videos, joe hills if you prefer lightly edited videos.

if you want the best building on hermitcraft: pearlescentmoon or bdoubleo100, special mention to goodtimeswithscar.

if you want someone as new as you: i'll come back and edit in whoever the new hermits are once we know! but them.

if you just want one of my favorites: zombiecleo or iskall85.

Peter learned about mates from such a young age. His older sister, Talia, would tell him stories of what it would be like to have and mate, and when Peter would find his, he would know. He thought that Corinne might be his true mate. She was cute enough, but maybe it was more hormonal than true love.

He pushed his way through the hallways of Beacon Hills. Nothing bad or exciting ever happened here. Peter's family was the only pack in town. Of course, there were the Argents, specifically, Chris Argent, in almost every single one of Peter's classes. Peter knew that he would turn out to be just like the rest of his family. Hunters. Hunters of Peter's kind. Of werewolves.

Maybe Peter would go visit his sister after school and his two year old nephew, Derek. Catch a movie or go for a run in the woods. Whatever Peter's original plans were going to be were put to a stop as he inhaled something sweet and sharp. Almost like a cinnamon scent. Peter felt his inner wolf howl with delight as his eyes flashed gold for a second, and his claws and canines came out. What the hell was going on? Why was he shifting in the middle of the hallway....

Then Peter saw him: Y/N L/N.

Y/N was on the basketball team with Noah Stilinski. He was a golden boy. He was kind to all, and he was fucking burning Peter's nose with his scent. The smell of cinnamon was all over him, and Peter realized that this mortal boy was his mate. A male was his mate? Who would have guessed it?

Peter was so caught up in Y/N's smell that he accidentally tripped over his own two feet and came crashing to the floor in the middle of the hallway. Books, pens, papers, and Peter's Walkman of Nirvana went all across the floor. The sounds of laughter and ridicule were heavy on Peter's ears as the entire hallway saw his little slip up and started laughing and pointing at him.

The young werewolf would have gladly tore through everyone in school, especially, Argent, but the calming scent of his mate filled his nose, and Peter watched as Y/N kneeled down beside him and helped him pick up his stuff. "Shit, man. You okay?" Y/N asked once Peter was on his feet again.

Peter's head was still dizzy from his mate's scent, and it took everything Peter had not to take him right then and there in the hallway. He swallowed. "Yeah. Thanks, man. Guess I slipped on the floor wax." It was a lame excuse, but Y/N didn't seem to be interested in Peter's lies. He was looking at a cassette Peter's Walkman had dropped. "Dude, you like Pearl Jam and Metallica too? I love these guys."

Peter looked at him and smirked. "Me too. Maybe we should hang out sometime and listen to them?"

"Definitely." Y/N smiled.

The bell rang as Y/N looked at Peter. "Better get to class. Hope you're okay, Peter."

"Thanks for the help, Y/N." Peter smiled as the young man flashed him a smile and left as Peter finally found his mate.

Limited Life if death had thrice the impact*

(*it was this or everyone having 8 hours and this was the most interesting of the options: Everyone still has 24 hours but dying loses 3 Instead of 1... Killing rewards are also tripled)

Everyone starts with 24 hours, with all the previous series having only one life (Or two) so the green yellow red life system is implemented for the first time ever.

Scott still kills Skizz, so does Bdubs. Scott and Bdubs both gain 3 hours and Skizz loses 12 hours bringing him to yellow almost immediately.

Jimmy and Joel still die to lava, Scar still falls down a hill and dies and Cleo still gets exploded by a creeper. They all lose 3 hours.

Impulse and Skizz still die to the creeper losing 3 hours each.

Martyn still boogey kills BigB gaining 3 hours and making Bigb lose 6... He also still dies soon after voiding the gain.

At the end of the first session: Scott and Bdubs are at 24:30. Scar, Impulse, Cleo, Jimmy and Joel are at 18:30. BigB is at 15:30 putting him in yellow. Skizz is at 6:30 putting him in red. Everyone else is at 21:30 much like in our timeline.

Joel, Jimmy and Grian still die to vex while raiding the mansion. They lose 3 hours each.

Joel still boogey kills Scar and Cleo though only Scars death counts as a boogey kill. Scar loses 6 hours, Cleo loses 3 and Joel gains 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Skizz still gets revenge on Bdubs so he gains 1:30 while Bdubs loses 3 hours.

At the end of session 2: Scott is at 22:30. Bdubs, Etho, Tango, Pearl and Martyn are at 19:30. Impulse and Grian are at 16:30. Joel is at 16:00. Cleo, BigB and Jimmy are at 13:30. Scar is at 10:30. Skizz is at 5:00.

Skizz still falls to his death in the skynet losing 3 hours.

Since both Jimmy and Scar are between 8 and 16 hours Scar can't kill Jimmy.

Scar can still kill Pearl which means Joel illegaly killing him immediately after still happens... Which of course means joel still fails his water bucket clutch.

Martyn still gets creepered costing him two lives and Impulse still boogey kills Pearl.

Early in the session Grian turns yellow which means Scar is robbed of the opportunity to do his triple kill. L.

Joel killing Martyn also can't happen with them both being yellow by that point of the session which means Martyn also never places the pufferfish that kills Grian.

Etho still gets destroyed by a creeper.

Without any kills Skizz runs out of time before the end of the session and is the first player out of the game.

By the end of session 3: Scott is at 20:00. Bdubs, Impulse and Tango are at 17:00. Martyn, Grian and Etho are at 14:00. Cleo, BigB and Jimmy are at 11:00. Joel is at 10:30. Pearl is at 8:00. Scar is at 5:00. Skizz is out.

Joel still accidentally kills Cleo and later purposely killing Tango.

Scott still lets Cleo kill him.

In this timeline Etho never kills Joel as he has more time then him, boat boys divorce never happens.

Tango still boogey kills Martyn to get rid of the curse and Grian still falls to his death.

By the time Martyn would have killed Bdubs they both would be yellow making that kill unlikely to happen.

Martyn still accidentally kills Scar (which is why certain kills still happen even if both parties are yellow.

Grian never does his triple kill as his target (Impulse) is already yellow at this point.

BigB still dies to the trap at his base.

Scott doesn't have to die as he naturally goes to yellow, same for Tango.

Pearl still dies to a creeper and Joel still falls from a ladder.

Scar runs out of time, he's the second player out.

At the end of session 4: Scott, Tango, Impulse and Bdubs are at 15:00. Etho is at 12:00. Jimmy and Grian are at 9:00. Cleo is at 7:30. Joel is at 7:00. Martyn and BigB are at 6:00. Pearl is at 3:00. Scar and Skizz are out.

Now this the story starts deviating more, in our timeline session 5 was a peaceful one with everyone being yellow... however with the changes made Cleo, Joel, Martyn, BigB and Pearl are all red lives so I doubt It's as peaceful.

Firstly Tango still kills Bdubs as a boogeyman and Joel still dies to a creeper. Bdubs also still dies to Etho's tnt catch game.

Skizz never gets to push Martyn to his death as Skizz is out of the game.

With Pearl and BigB so close to death It's unlikely they do nothing, I can see them trying to targeting Jimmy or Bdubs. With Bdubs dying so much earlier he goes to red meaning Jimmy is the victim, possibly when isolated. I doubt Jimmy can defeat Pearl so Pearl ends up killing Jimmy.

Session 5 ends with: Tango at 16:00. Scott and Impulse at 13:00. Etho is at 10:00. Grian is at 7:00. Cleo at 5:30. Bdubs, Martyn, BigB and Jimmy are at 4:00. Pearl at 2:30. Joel at 2:00. Scar and Skizz are out.

Joel and Jimmy still fail their bucket clutch, Joel is out of the game and Jimmy and Grian are the last bad boys left.

Pearl can't be the boogieman as she's red so It's *rolls random generator* Etho.

Grian also still pushes the button killing permanently both Jimmy and Pearl (Lizzie). The fandom makes it much more tragic then it is. (He also gets time as he's red)

Many death related to the bad boys never happen as only Grian is left.

Scar never kills Etho but Etho still dies to his own trap so.

Pearl never boogie kills Grian.

Cleo (Gem) still kills Etho but I doubt she does so twice like in canon. Martyn still drops tnt on Impulse.

Tango still dies when escaping from Grian (which was counted as a kill) and is later still killed by Martyn twice only to get killed by a skeleton.

Etho doesn't get a boogey kill but he also doesn't need to as he goes red during the session.

By the end of session 6: Scott is at 11:00. Grian is at 9:30. Impulse is at 8:00. Cleo and Martyn are at 5:00. Tango, Bdubs, BigB and Etho are at 2:00. Jimmy, Pearl, Joel, Scar and Skizz are out.

I can see Cleo and the mean gills working together. I can see Grian and BigB doing the same.

When it comes to the boogieman... Joel can't be boogeyman and since there can't be scaling...*rolls random generator* Scott.

Since The Bad Boys are gone Grian never climbs and then fall from the ladders.

Scott can't ask Scar to kill him to remove the target on his back so I think he just asks Etho directly... He doesn't have to ask anyone else since this puts him on red.

Even without the bad boys Grian gets desperate and kills Etho getting killed by Scott in the process. Unlike our timeline this is a boogie kill.

Grian still drops tnt on Impulse, Scott, Tango and Etho. Tango and Etho are out of the game.

Impulse still dies to the enderpearl and later later killed by Scott who doesn't particularly want to risk being a target again and likely has someone else kill him... likely Martyn. Impulse is out of the game.

Cleo and Bdubs are then killed by tnt dropped by Grian and run out of time.

BigB runs out of time.

Session 7 ends with: Grian at 8:30. Scott at 7:30. Martyn at 4:30. BigB, Bdubs, Cleo, Impulse, Etho, Tango, Jimmy, Pearl, Joel, Scar and Skizz are out.

With 3 players left Martyn surprises everyone and takes the others out, Scott lets himself be killed and Grian is not good at dealing with unexpected danger. Scott is third, Grian is second.

And Limited Life will always be won by Mars.

She claimed that 16-year-old girls are 'hotter' than 26-year-olds

She also said 'Why can’t women in their 30s take the L and just ACCEPT that women in their 20s are more attractive'

She thinks that it's a woman's fault if her male partner cheats, that men should be able to hit women back, and that women don't deserve a man who makes 6 figures if they are obese

She said that when unmarried women get pregnant it is "99.9999% the woman's fault"

She claimed that women past the age of 30 who are childless and unmarried are over-the-hill (Pearl herself is 27, not married and childless)

Purple washed into yellow before they both washed into the Blue of the sea in the distance, it felt poetic that Lewis’ colours should be surrounding you as you looked for him, your eyes searching for the man you loved, just as they always did. 

The waves were calming, as if they were aware of the fast approach of night and knew that they too should soften, creating a soft hum all around as you spotted him in the distance.

‘I’ll be waiting for you at our spot, L x’

The note that was placed on your pillow read words written in handwriting you had soon grown to love most, Lewis often left you little notes, words of his love spilled into an ink display.

It was rare that Lewis was home before you, but today he was. He had paid for you to be pampered at a spa all day with your friends as he travelled home from a race. He always hated the idea of you waiting for him at home alone, he hated the idea that he may ever be a burden to you, and despite your insistence always that he wasn’t, he made sure that he would never leave you with nothing to do as he travelled. 

You held your breath as you got closer to him, completely without intention. It was very easy to forget how to function in his presence, and as you could do nothing but admire the beautiful silhouette of the God-like man up on the small hill, you accepted the fact that until he kissed you, a kiss that always brought you back down to earth softly, breathing just simply would not be an option.

“There you are...”

Lewis stretched out his hand for you to take it, helping you up the final few steps unnecessarily, he could never resist helping you, even when you didn’t need it, he was determined to imprint on you the fact that he would always be there to support you, even with little gestures like this. 

“This is...wow, Lewis...this is beautiful.”

The little grassy hill that you had both labelled as your spot, titled that when Lewis took you here on your first date just to show you how beautiful the sunset looked in the distance, was decorated with a blanket for you both to sit on, rose petals to frame it, and Tupperware containing your favourite take out. He had covered all bases for your happiness, yet little did he know, all it took was his presence.

“It’s not much, if I had more time I would have cooked, and then also-”

You stopped his sentence short by pulling him into your lips, knowing the power you held over him with just a kiss, knowing that he would feel nothing but content in that moment and forget any worrying he had left to do.

“It’s perfect, truly perfect.”

Lewis’ smile hit his eyes and that’s how you knew he really meant it, those crinkles that decorated the brown pearls that sparkled always, told you he meant his happiness displayed, his eyes held no lies.

“Happy Birthday, baby…”

He took out a box that was hidden in the depths of his short pockets and for a moment you wondered if he was about to be so bold as to propose a lifetime with you, until he opened it and revealed something that to you, in that moment, was far better.

“I love it, thank you!”

A petite silver chain that held the initials ‘LH’ in cursive at the end of it, was laid at the bottom of your throat by the same fingers that found that place often. He was so delicate as he put the necklace on you, so careful, you wondered if it was because of how fragile the jewellery was or was it your fragility he was more concerned with?

“For when I’m away, you will always carry something of me with you…”

You couldn’t help but play with the initials, twirling the metal between your finger and thumb, as Lewis wrapped his arms around you, kissing you hair as you both stood watching the sunset in the distance.

“Now I need to give you something, to remind you of me too.”

He chuckled almost expectantly, like he knew that you would say those words and as he unwrapped you, turning you to face him once more, you soon learnt just how well he knew you.

“I already have that…”

Holding out his left wrist, he revealed a more permanent gift. In small but significant writing, Lewis had tattooed your initials on his skin in the spot that held his pulse point, a placement so very intentional, you would later learn.

“Lewis…that’s so…permanent.”

As if he had anticipated your reaction to the tattoo as well, he chuckled some more, pulling you into his chest, his hand cradling your head.

“The moment I met you I knew there would not be a day that I would be able to forget you, no matter what happened, you’re permanently in my heart. A little tattoo on my skin means nothing in comparison, you’re permanent, this is just so everyone else knows that too.”

Once the moment had passed, you both sat down on the blanket he had carefully laid out for you, you slotted between his thighs, resting up against his chest as he relayed the race to you as if you hadn’t watched it on television, as if you hadn’t had the run down from him already.

You loved it, you loved every moment he spoke about racing as it was the only time you heard him speak so enamoured, so full of love, so full of joy, so full of pride, the only other time he sounded like that was when he spoke about you.

“That thing you thought the box was…”

Your heart stopped, he had seen and read your reaction so well, he always did. Embarrassment washed over you, you felt stupid for even considering it.

“Lewis, it’s fine, I-“

“Stop…let me finish. The thing you thought the box was, the ring, I just want you to know that it’s coming…sooner than you think.”

Never had you met a man so free with both his thoughts and his emotions, yet hearing him tell you he was going to propose to you soon felt natural, it felt normal, and as you watched the sunset into complete darkness, laid back with the man you loved as you both pointed out the stars and all the shapes they formed, you were so thankful for how healthy your relationship was, and how special your man was too. 

There was not a star in the sky that would be able to grant you a wish as powerful as the one that would have brought Lewis to you, instead you had fate to thank for that, fate mixed with chance, but none of that mattered now, you had him and there was not a moment that passed by that you didn’t appreciate just how lucky you were to be loved by the man who could do nothing but love.

A man wash up to the shore, unconsciously.

He woke up on the beach hearing others fixing what had broke during the storm.

Someone noticed him, because he ran to him to help.

The washed up man fell back unconscious  

The next thing he knew us that he woke up on a soft bed, in a room made of wood and stone, a table with a glass of water and a plate of sausage rolls.

The brunette sat up on the bed of red.

'Grian loves red,' the man though.

The door opens and a man comes in.

"Ah! You're awake. How ar' ya feeling?" The blond man said as he closes the door, "hope you had a restful sleep."

"I did. Thanks. Uh I'm Ca- Scar. GoodTimeWithScar," he said, " and you are?"

"My name's Martin Woods, " Martin introduced himself, " eat. Scott didn't make these for nuthing."

Scar proceeds to eat the Sausage rolls and Martin sat down-

"MARTIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNN !!!!!!! TELL SCOTT NOT TO GET ONA SHIIIIIPPP!!!" Screamed someone.

Martin sighs " sorry I'll go check that. You enjoy and spare clothes are in the closet over there," and so he left.

Scar sat there alone.

'ItS your fault.' came a voice.

"What?" The man asked.

'YoU abandoned Us. I'm Dead Because oF yOu.' the voice said.

"No I-" his breathing quickened. " I - I didn't-"

Someone stood in the doorway.

"GrIan?" Scar's voice broke (not an l but an capital i).

The person walked to the scarred face man who broke down crying. The blond canary man took Scar in his arms and comforted him.

"Shhhh it's okay. You're here. Nothing's wrong. Follow my voice," the person said,"  no one is dead."

Stress walked out of the room with Doc. All of the survivors awake. Or at least 4 of them one overseas.

"I'm sorry," the medic told them, " we couldn't get his heart beat back."

The three of them shocked about the news impulse went and hugged the other two.

"He.. he can't. N-no not yet," Pearl muttered ", not my captain."

Pearl broke down crying and so did mumbo, Impulse cried too, but not so much.

Xisuma told the medics to prepare the body for a land burial and went to Bdubs to prepare to change course.

An hour passed, Pearl and Mumbo fell asleep. Impulse told Bdubs the cords for Grian's home land. And so the went home.

The trip took a week on sea. They anchored the ship and the Hermitcrew loaded the  bay up. Xisuma went with the three survivors.

"He lives up on that mountain with others," Pearl told him.

They walked out of the town on the path to the forest and to the gates at the mountain foot.

Impulse took a key from under a rock at the gate and unlocked the gate.

The four of them got through and up hill they went. Near the top there's a house, a garden, a some sort of elevator and a girl on a chair with paints and a canvas.

" Uh hello?" Impulse said unsure of himself.

"Hello! Oh hi auntie Pearls!" The girl looked at them and went straight to Pearl, " where's dad?"

Then it clicked to the men. Grian had a kid.

"He's not coming back, Cherry," Pearl broke the news.

"He is coming back. He promised... Auntie," Cherry's voice broke as she started crying, in her aunt's arms.

Xisuma noticed that the girl is young. About 11 or 12 years old. Her hair is black like Mumbo's but she has freckles like the ones Grian had.

"We have his body on the ship. If you'd like we can bury him," Xisuma informed the young one.

"A-at the garden," was all she said.

Pearl took her inside and Xisuma walked back to the ship with Impulse.

Backs Turned, Victory

Only Cleo and Scott remained. Honestly, Cleo never thought she’d be one of the last two. The closest she ever got was in Double Life, in fourth place. Did that technically count as second place, considering the soulmate dynamics?

But now there were no technicalities. No other person who shared her life. Her team made it to the end. Sadly, Pearl had to go. The triple Gs couldn’t all win. 

After Martyn and Pearl died, Cleo, Scott, and Gem made a pact. They’d all go down to their last lives, and then a free for all. Always Scott with his justice. He proposed a battle royale once, among four players. It went well for him.

He then proposed the same in a previous season. 

It didn’t end well for him then.

They took a breather. It truly felt strange, being in a virtual world. It felt… disorientating. But at least they’d be free to go after this. They couldn’t wait to meet up with their friends in the real world after remembering them through the game. 

Usually, after remembering, that was it. It only lasted for however long they survived in the game, then they died, and that was it. And in another world, they were all unaware living their lives, until a game, they remembered, then they died, rinse and repeat. Cleo was surprised how she went all her current life not knowing Scott. She definitely had to reach out after they got this over and done with.

But before that, they had a fight to win.

“Come on, Scott. You could never kill me,” Cleo mocked, and Scott jumped to action.

His sword clashed against her shield and she struck.

And he was gone.

She hadn’t killed him. She could hear him wince. He was just. Gone.

Their voices overlapped. “Where have you gone to?” — “I don’t even know where you are.”

Ah, behind them. That virtual world truly was strange. A laugh bubbled up from her and Scott followed in her laughter. Still, she struck again, it hit. Scott’s sword kept hitting their shield. Good.

“Wait,” Scott said. Cleo stopped, unsure exactly why they felt compelled to. 

(That’s a friend, they were just laughing, and it’s not even actual real life, despite what the name of the game suggests)

Out of the corner of their eye, they saw a zombie approaching as Scott talked nonsense that Cleo wasn’t really paying attention to.

Near.

She said something in response to his question, tracking the zombie while staring at Scott. It was at an arm’s—

Scott popped out of existence, revealing the zombie that did him in.

Cleo’s shriek transformed into laughter as she did a quick job of the zombie. 

Everything was silent for a second, then it hit them. They’d won. They cheered with all their might and looked around for a vibrant green mob.

They knew what they had to do now.

When only four people remained, Scott had devised a plan. Each player on a corner of the arena. No alliances. Fight on sight, even if he had to end Pearl. A battle royale, a fair battle, as it all should be.

The first to go was Pearl, by Ren’s hands.

He knew it could’ve been him who killed Pearl, had he come out of the trees sooner, but still, he set his eyes on Ren and not let go.

Zombies swarmed around them. Scott kept away from them as he tried to shoot Ren. He was sure he’d almost killed him, but he slipped from sight.

The next thing he knew, Martyn had fallen down a hole and exploded himself. One less competitor. There was only Ren left.

He took chase.

Each arrow hit the mark. Ren was visibly agitated now as he ran down the hill.

Scott smiled in satisfaction as a horde of zombies tailed Ren.

The man just wouldn’t give up. Scott wouldn’t expect him to. 

They were on the side of another hill now. Ren tried shooting Scott, but his aim wasn’t the best. Scott outmaneuvered him, turned him around and back. A great strategy, disorientating your enemy. 

A zombie walked past Ren. Scott never lowered his bow.

Then lightning. 

A zombie walked away victorious, and Scott couldn’t care less that it wasn’t him who finished him. He was glad. Mirth colored his voice, and relief. So much relief…

He had won.

Scott made a hole for Binkie in the ground, filled with water so Pearl’s pet could outlast him, and looked to the side.

The canopy of a tree. 

He walked up to it, and climbed onto its strongest branches.

The rustling of leaves was the only sound around him as he stood atop the tree, feet steady.

He lifted his sword in the sky—

A flash of white.

In another world, Scott and Martyn were a team.

In that world, they were beasts of the sea; a creature from the depths and a sailor corrupted by coral and kelp.

And when there were only three people left, Scott proposed to go down to their last hour and battle it out, fair. They’d fight with no armor, no shield, as proposed by Impulse. Battle like their forefathers, Grian and Scar. But Scott and Martyn and Impulse instead. 

But Martyn… Martyn only cared to win.

He struck against his ally, lava charing— burning through Scott’s scales and flesh. He thrusted his sword, and Scott was dead.

Impulse tried to run, but he was no match for him. Words, almost an incantation, poured out of Martyn as he slashed his enemy, as he gained time. Time. Time.

Impulse was dead. The words kept coming, like he’d rehearsed them. Like his body wasn’t his own, but it was. Like he was a shell controlled by himself, a part he didn’t know. Divine inspiration. He’d won—

That feels good.

His hand were stained red, like the corals piercing from his skin.

Time is delicious.

—and Martyn laughed—

—knowing his time would run out.
