Eris Week '24 Day 6: AU/Retellings
On day 6 of @erisweekofficial I'm choosing to fulfill a both prompts together with the first book of "The Song of Azris".
Tumblr media
The epic begins. In Book I: The Promise, we learn of Azriel's past and the fateful day in Sparta that would once again bring these men together again in Troy.
Referring to each chapter as a book is also a nod to Homer's style, and the way he outlined both The Iliad and The Odyssey.
Be sure to read the "Catalogue of Characters" and "Ode to the Muses" before you get started. TW/CW for Book I include fire, burns, death, parental abuse of a child.
Read a snippet of Book I below, or find the whole book on AO3.
The days in the training field had been hard, and Azriel’s hands were sore from holding the metal sword thrust upon him. He was only twelve- he shouldn’t have been a full-size sword yet- but his father had commanded it. No one refused King Menoetius, especially not his youngest son.  Menoetius decided Azriel had to be good for something. He was much younger than his brothers and would never be a king in his own right. So, he was to be a soldier. The best soldier, meant to protect his brothers’ backs as they were trained to take his father’s throne.  He’d passed by the beach, looking for where his mother and sister would play skipping stones. Not finding them there, Azriel approached the small house where Phoibe would hide from their brothers. She told Azriel she was safe there - no one could touch her. But the bruises he so often found on her arms indicated otherwise. As the eldest, she should have been first in line for the throne- would have been if not for the misfortune of being born a girl. Their mother was sickly, unable to care for Azriel as a child, and Phoibe had practically raised him. Some of his best memories were of just the two of them, playing together, laughing, separate and safe from the others.  Kicking dust as he made his way toward the cottage, deep in thought, Azriel watched the sun as it dipped below the horizon, sending tendrils of light like flame across the sky.  The screams broke him from his reverie, spurring him into a run. His legs ached, muscles screaming as he pushed them once again after breaking himself in training from sunup to sundown. Cresting the hill’s horizon, Azriel took in the cottage, the tendrils of flames licking the room, caressing the sun's dying rays.
Keep reading here on AO3!
Special thanks to @alexandia03 for helping me correlate all of the characters, piece together the myths/legends, and for beta reading this fic.

idk if you already did this and i just forget, but makoharu, who is orpheus and who is eurydice? you've made hadestown references before in the duration of our greek myth mh au exchanges but i don't recall if you've made a real mh orpheus-eurydice talk before.
also the "makoto/kiyofumi = patroclus/cleopatra" parallel also works in haru/azuma = achilles/meleager. achilles' name is derived from the greek word for pain, achos, and haru's full name means "seven currents away" literally (nanase- seven currents; haruka- distant, remote, away) or "great isolation". meanwhile their counterparts, once glorious people who have fallen out of glory, azuma's name ryuji means "imperial ruler", and meleager means "he who was part of the hunt" (his fame comes from his participation in the calydonian boar hunt).
i think there's something about how haru and achilles are both destined for a life of glory, but also for a life of grief and pain and suffering (as their name suggests) at the same time, and then there's azuma and the king who were both destined for glory, but ended in grief and pain and suffering not bc of destiny, but bc of their choices (idk i'm kinda reaching here)
this time the connection is haru/achilles = azuma/meleager (since in the first place achilles and meleager have different etymologies that happen to somehow correspond with haru's and azuma's, respectively. whereas patroclus and cleopatra share the same etymologies, and makoto and kiyofumi also have some similarities in the meanings of their names, that makes it makoto/kiyofumi = patroclus/cleopatra). either way, the parallels still work bc all four names make a connection.
i just realized how both canon and mook haru have some similarities w/ tsoa achilles in the way that both are willing to let other people in peril if it means the safety of their beloved. haru was mad at rei bc if it hadn't for him makoto wouldn't have been in danger like that. no implication that makoto should have left rei to drown to death, but if we consider the mook where haru directly attempted to prevent makoto from saving a potentially trapped victim (a child at that!) just so he wouldn't return to the danger of a burning, crumbling building, we realize that haru is not above letting others die just to ensure makoto is safe, that he survives.
achilles in tsoa (and also prob in the illiad if i still remember correctly) would not care if the greeks were being slaughtered by the trojans when patroclus begged to don his armor in hopes of scaring the enemies away and save the greeks from annihilation. he held on as much as he could to refuse patroclus, bc not only is it dangerous for him, he wouldn't want him to risk his life for people he barely cares about at this point (not to mention he was also mad at the whole army during this point). when patroclus was killed agamemnon "tried" (bc srsly he wasn't even trying) to console achilles, he said that he wished patroclus should have let them all die.
self-sacrificing people who would give up their lives to save someone else and selfish people in love who would sacrificd others for their beloved's life. makoharu are once again patrochilles reincarnated. the evidence just keeps growing and growing.
yes this is two topics in one ask. yes i'm milking the shit out of the patrochilles au. also feel free to separate the answers in this. as usual i'm thinking too much again and it's my mission to bother you about this
Love your long asks 💚💙 OKAY SO first order of business: I go back and forth when it comes to makoharu in an orpheus/eurydice situation. My first instinct is thinking about Makoto as Orpheus, full of a hope that can inspire life and new beginnings, and Haru as Eurydice, who can’t help but believe in his song, his heart (falling in spite of himself, etc etc). I can see them falling fast, seamlessly in a way that neither of them could’ve expected or known that they wanted. Love built from a life lived and a life imagined meeting in the middle and daring to dream of something new, a line to hold onto. I can see Makoto, invested in hope not to a point of naïveté, but of a different shade of demand, of desperation — focused on the weight of being a light bearer for so long he doesn’t notice Haru’s not still behind/beside him until it’s too late. (Do you see it? The parallels to the mook storyline?? Makoto getting lost to the idea of being the hero and saving people no matter the cost to him, not realizing that having your soul intertwined with someone else like that means you’re never only risking yourself??? Hello????)
Similarly though, I can see Haru as Orpheus, taking the lost potential of his FS/FS2 journey (if KA won’t follow through with the threads then I will) and trying to do the impossible: hold hope of success and treasure his bonds, resurrecting them through that sheer power of manifesting spring and new beginnings. I can see him finishing his song, a song older than him, and see himself in Hades’s (maybe Ssk or Ryuuji, if we want another player in there) power-drunk grief (Epic III I love you always). I can see him trudging forward, becoming a voice for people, Makoto right behind, trudging forward… and I can see the doubt from both of them close in. Haru wondering why anyone would follow him, look up to him, when the expectation has always felt a little too ill-fitting, too heavy on his shoulders. Makoto seeing his back, trusting Haru’s ability to move forward and his own will to, but not his own ability to close the distance between when it gets too wide, when the hand he depends upon can’t afford to turn around, when they can’t lean on that strength or support that comes from meeting eyes.
I can see the simultaneous relief and heartbreak that comes when they do meet eyes, and everything comes to a head. When Haru’s will to push forever (and give up something to reach the top) breaks, and he turns like he always has (always would, always will as long as he still can) to see Makoto right there, unwavering and supportive, despite being so sad that it had to be here and now that they see each other, not before. It’s the hospital scene we kinda had, but better; it’s a Makoto dream of him once again trying to reach Haru, but this time he looks back, this time he’s in reach, but touching him makes him disappear. It’s a tragedy and a trainwreck and an ending, but not fully - the ending makes it a story, and that means it can now be told again, they get to live again (even if the outcome will stay the same, it’s another chance, another few minutes, another small bit of ephemeral joy). In the context of makoharu, I think they move in waves, both full of passions that draw them toward each other and out to the world. There’s a cyclical push-pull to them, a story told again and again as they grow, losing themselves to their devotions to the world and then alighting anew when the other holds up a mirror, reminds them of who they are. Caring so much will always give them a propensity for tragedy, but that intensity is fun to play around with in their dynamic. For all the stories we tell where they’re in-tune, calm, pedestrian, ordinary to the point of fading into everyone else quietly, there’s that powder keg of Feelings™️ riiiight under the surface that, given the right circumstances, lends itself to epic feats and tragedy.
MOVING FORWARD: looove seeing the comparisons you’ve made and how that shows the lengths Haru is willing to go to protect his heart (which is held up by Makoto, rests in his hands). I want to add a bit to this though, especially in reference to the mook. Haru’s mind is chiefly on Makoto, his concern is about fighting to get him out, but he doesn’t rush in until after he sees/hears that mother and her kid reuniting. That’s a delicate distinction that I think is important when it comes to how Haru tries to protect Makoto: as much as it’d be easier to pull him out as soon as there’s any sign of danger, he lets Makoto try. Makoto is of the world, of the people, hellbent on serving them (whether it’s being a firefighter in a burning building or a captain at a training camp from hell), and he gets hurt at the nagging thought that he’s not enough because of his setbacks or fears. Haru doesn’t like Makoto being near the ocean during the whole trip, but he still lets Makoto push them forward through it until he can’t anymore. He watches Makoto put himself into potentially scary and dangerous situations with a determination to have his back through it all, but that first presents itself in the form of sitting and waiting.
With that said, what you’re pointing out in Haru can also be true — when it finally comes to that moment where Haru jumps in, saving Makoto because not saving him isn’t an option, everything is on the table. He’ll risk any beautiful thing to save Makoto because his influence is part of what allowed him to think of the world as beautiful in the first place. So, if he isn’t enough, if sacrificing himself isn’t enough? If there were lasting effects from both situations (like Makoto’s injuries lasting longer than the immediate moment of peril), perhaps even loss?? Of course he’d be pissed, he’d be warped, wielding himself into a weapon to protect his grief and ire in a way he couldn’t initially protect Makoto and himself. Delicious parallels and angst potential there, always.

I love your fanart with Pyrrhus and Philia together! If you don't mind, can you share more of your current hcs on this AU where they coexist? Thank you!
Thank you! It was an adorable thought I had.
Disclaimer: now, I explained before the main reason I didn't include Pyrrhus in my modern AUs with Patroclus and/or Philia is because I was interested in approaching it from an angle involving race and culture! So you have been forewarned that those topics will be brought up!
Some Headcanons:
Philia is an early riser with Achilles when she's little, while Patroclus and Pyrrhus often sleep in. So Phi is often at his door starting around 9 waiting for him to wake up. "It's time to wake up! Wake up time!"
the parents can always tell when the Kids are awake together bc there's going to be NOISE. Something is always crashing. They learn the difference between good and bad crashes. Phi is usually the first to cry.
Pyrrhus loves Patroclus' cooking. To be fair, everyone does. But he especially likes his breakfasts; they're one of his favorite parts of his visits.
Pyrrhus comes over every Friday-Sunday. They pick him up from school.
It was a rough ass beginning, tbh. Pyrrhus bitterly struggled (and still does, even into young adulthood) with the idea that Deidameia and Achilles aren't a thing. Sometimes he wishes that he could have his dad all to himself, he doesn't want to share his parents. It took some time for him and Patroclus to come to a comfortable peace.
Pyrrhus actually likes being an older brother! He'll grumble and groan, but he used to demand to hold and rock the baby to sleep. If Philia cries (and it's not his fault), he got very defensive over her.
They are very much the "you can hit me back don't tell Papa" kids lmao shit gets broken and it's skedaddle we don't know WHO did it Daddy!
Unfortunately Phi's not a good liar and they're children so it's pretty easy to tell who did what 🤣 (the super sword move breaking the vase? Pyrrhus. The concoction of soap (potion) in the sink? Phi.)
At some point, Achilles and Patroclus have to sit them down for one of the Difficult Talks. That is, Pyrrhus has to learn that unfortunately, people are going to treat him and Philia (and Patroclus) Differently because of how she looks. Not everyone is going to be nice and treat her the way they treat him, and he has to know what that means. For example, he can't tease her about or tug on her hair- because you shouldn't be touching anyone's hair without their permission anyway, but it also is racist.
By the time they're grown, there's a special camaraderie between the two to where Pyrrhus cannot WAIT for her to bring Calix home. He is Team Petty with Achilles. Feel bad for the boy, fr. Terrifying house to enter.

Eris Week '24 Day 5: War/Adventure
On day 5 of @erisweekofficial I'm launching a new adventure set just before and during the Trojan War: "The Song of Azris" is an Ancient Greek Azris/Patrochilles AU using inspiration from The Iliad, The Song of Achilles, and Greek Religion & Lore, featuring Azriel as Patroclus and Eris as Achilles.
Tumblr media
The Catalogue of Characters is a reference list of the characters that who up throughout the series, including Gods, Trojans, and Greeks. Here you will find important relationships, and the ancient character counterparts for the ACOTAR characters. The name is a nod to Book Two of The Iliad, in which Homer outlines the catalogue of ships that traveled from Greece.
Tumblr media
Before Homer's poems, he would include an invocation to the muses. These poems acted as an indication that the writer was seeking inspiration from a higher power or source. My fic features one such invocation in my poem, "Ode to the Muses". Though it is not specifically stated, I am invoking Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, whose statue is part of the cover art.
This poem is mean to be a reflection on war, not just as it is in great epics and fantasy novels, but as it is in real life.
Sing me a song of a tale of two men A tale of pride and pain tightly interwoven Sing me a song of a tale of two boys Who once dreamed of love and other naieve joys Sing me a song of the heartache of war Families divided, bleeding to settle the score Sing me a song of the sacrifices spent And the boys who became men but never home went Sing me a song of the young maidens Who cried til tears dried only to be taken again Sing me a song of the horrors of death Only to show there’s beauty in the bereft Sing me a song of a tale of two men So that we may cry while we sing it again and again.
Read the full Catalogue of Characters on AO3 , or read the Ode again on AO3.
Stay tuned for Day 6 of Eris week when the epic begins with "Book 1: The Promise".
Special thanks to @alexandia03 for helping me correlate all of the characters, piece together the myths/legends, and for beta reading this fic.

patrochilles / F1 iliad AU / ~12k words
inspired by @wolfythewitch’s gorgeous F1 art
After Achilles unexpectedly storms off the track during the last race of the World Championship, Patroclus is tasked by members of his own team and beyond to bring him back to the race as the threat of a Trojan victory looms.
.
“You really think I could get Achilles back on the track with all of you disrespecting him like this?” Patroclus almost laughs but it gets stuck in his throat. “And anyway, I shouldn’t even be here talking to you. I should be cheering on my own team instead of listening to you shit on yours.”
“Patroclus, we are all on the same team under Agamemnon. And we are about to get fucked if we lose Helen’s sponsorship to the Trojans. I’m telling you, you might not even have a contract next year.”
Patroclus’s incredulous laugh is a choked sound that bursts past his lips. He looks at Odysseus, the permanent lines across his brow, the silver hair catching the sunlight pouring in from the open bay doors, and tries to find some of the good humor that’s usually there. It’s not here today. All he can see is worry and a hint of fear. It slides across the space between them, burrowing itself into Patroclus’s chest, as cool as the wine from earlier.
“There are two races left,” Odysseus says, his voice barely above a whisper, snatched out of his mouth and weaving in and out and around the crowd that presses in waves of Ferrari red and Mercedes black and Red Bull blue. “Achilles needs to be there for at least one, otherwise we’re cooked.”

Note
so i searched the meaning of kiyofumi's name and it prob translates to something like "pure message" (the kanji for "kiyo" meaning "pure"; "fumi" is "sentence, letter, writing, or literature"). makoto's name means "truth", and there's something about this parallelism the way it also parallels patroclus, whose name means "glory of the father", and cleopatra, name with the same roots and meaning in origin, the most beloved wife of the king meleager, to whom achilles is compared, in fame, glory, the way they were wronged, the way they acted about it, and the way they only listened to their respective beloveds. the king was doomed when he didn't listen early enough to his wife, and achilles was said to face the same faith if he would not listen to patroclus.
makoto and kiyofumi are supposedly the reasons their respective best friends swim [kiyofumi's support to azuma; makoto's feelings reaching haru] , and like, if the foreshadowing in s3 was pushed through (and with this kind of coincidence in their name etymologies) with haru paralleled to azuma, then makoto would most definitely the kiyofumi parallel. all i'm saying is that mh patrochilles au is canon, the way the patrochiles parallels have their own counterparts in the free! universe.
achilles [meleager] = haru [azuma]
patroclus [cleopatra] = makoto [kiyofumi]
it's 11 and i just had to tell you so forgive my ramblings
I love getting to hear about your different AU ideas because the comparisons and characterizations always seem to get to one of the most compelling parts of their dynamics: where the emotional tether and guiding light for Character A resides in the hope and balance gained from Character B’s presence (which is a double-edged sword to wield that we see can lead to tragedy). Kiyofumi and Ryuuji’s story is interesting to look at in comparison with Makoto and Haru now that we know FS2 didn’t go for the kill by making it a direct warning (RIP to the Makoto-gets-hurt theories). So, how much of it is meant to be taken as a parallel between situations? We arguably get to see a glimpse into what both Ryuuji and Haru are like when their centers are taken away from them (caring about the water, but taking a break from it when they’re so lost. Holding the weight of swimming in an obligatory manner on their shoulders when they’ve lost sight of the “why…” not being able to consider a return until they can reconnect with who they’ve lost or create a new center for themselves in their stead). Ryuuji was lost until he decided to go into training, and then find a passion project of sorts with Haru (man really said “oh he’s just like me fr let me study him). Haru was lost once when he didn’t know what to do after graduation (plus the fireworks fight giving clarity to how lost and disconnected he really was from his emotional center and biggest support), and he gets lost again in FS when he gets tunnel vision toward having to “get stronger” on his own. What is worth looking at is that latter situation, because this one comes after the precedent of Ryuuji’s story. Since the parallel wasn’t to denote Haru choosing between his bonds or his professional drive (at least not in a clear-cut way), then what do we do now with Chekov’s mentor-sob-story?
I’m a broken record at this point (and will end up saying it again when more people see fs2 and want to talk about it) but so much golden potential lies in the timeskip. There could’ve been something so valuable in getting to see Haru parse through his feelings when forced to rehab and be on-pause for a minute. Not only the talks with his friends to figure out how to proceed forward without falling apart (cough cough Sousuke cough cough Nao) or figuring out a new dream for himself (cough cough Makoto cough cough Natsuya), but also !! potentially !! an actual talk with Ryuuji that isn’t just cryptic warnings or advice given pre-breakdown. I’m not saying that it’d fix everything or that sticking with Ryuuji long-term is the best idea, but I think there’d be something worthwhile in getting to hear what his coach thinks now that he’s not consumed with his own side-story and saw firsthand that Haru needs a specific type of support and hands-on guidance that he wasn’t necessarily receiving before. If anything, he can talk about how he rebuilt his center and chose to become a coach/trainer (iirc he mentioned that story to Makoto in s3 but idk if he ever did tell Haru much??). Some sort of anecdote to reinforce that there are many ways to return to the water. Idk, there’s something there!!
Aaaanyway, makoharu patrochilles parallel real and valid 😌 love how mh are Just Some Guys™️ but also the perfect vessels for tragic devotion and deathly obligation
