Keeping Steve safe is Jonathan's top priority

Jonathan also was scared running trying to survive and was still looking after Steve to protect him and keep him safe even while running. Jonathan warned Steve to jump over the trap and if he hadn’t, Steve would have gotten trapped and they could have done nothing to save him once the demogorgon reached him. Steve would have died if Jonathan hadn’t warned him and been more focused on Steve’s safety atm than his own. Its the point that thanks to Jonathan valuing Steve’s life more than his own, thats what saved Steve.

Its the fact that Jonathan is being so protective of Steve during all of this too. See it from his pov. He’d have to keep looking around to see where Steve is while this is all going on, make sure Steve is safe and think to save him from incoming danger [like the demogorgon, like the trap], ext… Jonathan had himself and Nancy to worry about and had to deal with the current battle with the demogorgon, but his main concern was ‘Is Steve safe?’ I got to warn him and save him and make sure he stays safe.

Just think that instead of Jonathan running, after he rescued Nancy, Jonathan didn’t. He checked around to make sure Steve got out safely Jonathan could have been killed for that hesitation, but it didn’t matter. He stopped to think and check if Steve got out ok and when he saw Steve was frozen in fear, he saved him and made sure he got out safely.

And then the trap, he thought oh no Steves gonna step on that, get trapped, and then get killed by the demogorgon, and tells Steve when to jump. Anyone else would be preoccupied with keeping themselves safe, but Jonathan isn’t thinking of himself here like other people would, he keeps worrying about Steve more and thinking of him the whole time and ways to keep Steve safe. That’s the most important thing to Jonathan atm.

Someone asked for the whole essay, here it is. . .

Jonathan looks at Steve and thinks of his father, who used to break his things because he could. That's why he doesn't understand that Steve had a perfectly valid reason for doing it. His father never had a reason. He just did it. All Jonathan sees is a picture and what the picture is telling him. He doesn't understand that the picture crossed a line with Steve and Nancy, that it made them uncomfortable, that to them, it makes him a creep. There are some things that people just can't understand, especially when all they've looked through is a narrow lense. The fact that Nancy looked uncomfortable was all that Steve needed to know, but it also made Steve uncomfortable too, and he had every right to feel angry. All Jonathan could see was his father, and once he let's go of the fact that Steve Harrington is NOT his father, he'll realize that Steve is a good man. His intention wasn't to be a bully like Jonathan's father. (Plus, once Jonathan realizes that Steve’s home life isn't all that different and that he's not all that different from Jonathan, it'll be easier to get to know him.) When Steve said the things that he did, all Jonathan could see was the way his father spoke to him and Will, the way his father spoke to his mother, and when Steve pushed him all he could see was all the times Lonnie pushed him around. So, he wasn't really punching Steve in that alleyway. It was his father. Steve going to his house to actually apologize is something his father has done, but Jonathan lives in denial. He can't comprehend that someone like Steve is actually a good man. Maybe they're no longer negative, but the daddy issues he's projected onto Steve are definitely still there. I also think when he was yelling at Nancy, he was yelling at himself, too.

Jonathan ran a hand through Steve's hair. He's been wanting to do that for years now, ever since he lay on Steve's bed the day before 8th grade, staring at the other boy as Queen played in the back of the conversation their eyes were having. And now he could do that, years later, already out of high school, lips kissed and fingers tracing each other's skin, Jonathan could now play with Steve's hair
