Guerlain Patchouli Paris, Diptyque Les Essences and Jo Malone London Hinoki & Cedarwood reviews - 2024
We have a new Guerlain! And it's a good one. We also have five new Diptyques... but maybe not all of them are good ones...
Japan, France and a coral reef at the bottom of an ocean were just three of our ports of call in a recent session of Love At First Scent, in which I covered new releases from Guerlain, Jo Malone London and Diptyque. Here are links to all the videos, followed, as ever, by further thoughts on some of the perfumes: Guerlain Patchouli Paris review — Jo Malone London Hinoki & Cedarwood review —…

Music made me love you, chapter 10
'This must do', Cora decided while looking at herself in the mirror. She had changed several times, but there was no more time to change again. She was standing in taupe linen pants with a dark orange coloured blouse on top. She chose brown sneakers with an orange touch in it. Her hair was pinned up, so it was not hanging directly in her face, but still loose enough to highlight her face. She hoped Robert liked her outfit, she was not sure what style he would like, and at the same time, she was not sure she cared. She liked this style herself and that was what counted.
She checked her make-up, it was not much that she used, just some bronzer and mascara. Enough to lighten her face, but not cover herself in plaster.
With a spring in her step, she walked towards the pub, when she noticed that Sorcha was walking towards her.
"You look radiant, are you going on a date?" Sorcha greeted Cora with two kisses on her cheek.
"Maybe I am." Cora did not want to tell her.
"Tell me everything." Sorcha hooked her arm in Cora’s.
"I am already a bit late, is it alright if I tell you after?"
"Is it Robert? Is he back?" Sorcha leaned against her shoulder "please tell me." Sorcha begged, when she saw in Cora’s eyes that she was not going to tell. "Alright, alright." She pulled her arm back. "Promise me you will tell me everything when you are back home!"
Cora laughed. "I promise, and now I have to run." She looked at her watch, she was late, hopefully Robert did not mind to much. A bit out of breath she stepped inside the pub, her eyes were scanning the room, but she did not see him. He would not let her down, would he? Of course not, she said angry to herself. He was the one suggesting meeting up here at the pub. She decided to wait at the bar.
+++
Robert had almost run through the shower, but he felt refreshed. He had used his favourite parfum, Guerlain - Patchouli Paris. He loved the musky smell, but he got insecure all of a sudden. What if Cora did not like this smell, he should have gone for a safer option. Why did he not just use his DIOR -Sauvage. Well, it was too late now to do anything, there was no time for another shower. He should leave. One more look in the mirror. He had a dark blue chino combined with a lighter blue linen v-line shirt, for comfort he chose brown sneakers, the same colour as his belt. Well, this should do. He picked up his phone and noticed that there were some missed calls. He quickly checked, twice from his mother and one from Rosamund. He contemplated if he should call back, but he decided that they could wait. He had said that he would not be available for the coming days. Whatever it was, they needed to wait. He could not let Cora down.
Just before he entered the pub, he heard his name. He turned around and saw Rosamund walking towards him. He sighed, why did she need to be here, right at this moment. He glanced into the pub, but he could not see if Cora was there. He looked at his watch and then greeted his sister. "Hello Rosamund, I did not know you were in the area."
"Hello Robert. I did not tell you that I was coming."
"Wait a minute." Robert stepped back. "How did you know where to find me?"
Rosamund did not look back at him, instead she lowered her eyes. "Mama, wants you back at Downton tomorrow morning. She says it is important."
"Everything is important with Mama. I do not understand her. She wants me to find a partner, but at the same time, she does not let me live my own life." He saw Rosamund taking in a breath to reply, he quickly continued. "I will call her tomorrow morning and do tell me; how did you know that I was here." He repeated his question.
This time Rosamund looked at him. "You know how Mama is. She wants you at Downton, for the simple fact that you are the next Lord Grantham. And it is not done, that the viscount does not live on the estate."
"I will ask again. How did you know where I was?" He ignored her last remark, he perfectly knew that he was supposed to live at Downton, but he could not be free and not be himself while his mother lived in the same house. He had found freedom the moment he moved to London, and he was not giving that up so easily. Even with the situation his father was in. The last month's he had told him everything he needed to know to take over the business, but he had already suspected it. Patrick was not ready to step down, so he would still be at the background. There was no need for him to live at Downton.
"I tracked your phone."
"You did what!" Robert exploded.
"Mama had asked me to put a tracker on your phone and I used it to find you."
"I cannot believe you Rosamund. Since when are you following Mama this close. You used to stand up to her and go your own way."
"Never mind that. I am sorry that I used the tracker. Can you please call Mama?"
"Since you are up there with Mama, you can let her know that I will call her tomorrow." He glanced into the pub again, was Cora still there? Was she even there, had she come?
"Is somebody waiting inside for you?" Rosamund asked. "Is it John? Come we should go inside; I want to catch up with John." Rosamund pulled on his arm and dragged him inside.
Robert felt his cheeks colour, how could he get rid of her, at that same moment he spotted Cora. She was sitting at the bar. She looked amazing, he chuckled when he saw that she was also wearing linen. He wanted to walk towards her and burry his face in her curls. She suddenly turned around, and he saw her spotting him. She started to smile, but when she saw that his arm was still held by another woman, a shadow came over her face.
+++
Why was he not here yet. Cora got really worried that he would let her down. Then she felt a presence and turned around. There he was, her heart jumped, and she felt butterflies, he looked incredibly handsome in his dark blue chino. Then she noticed another woman next to him. She had wild red curls, her figure was to die for, Cora thought. The dress she was wearing accentuated her small waist even more. She moved her hand to her own waist, and even though she was small, this woman was in an even better shape. What should she do, how could he set her up like this. She was excited and now he had crushed every hope she had. She got up from her barstool and walked towards the door, she had to walk passed Robert unfortunately.
"Cora, where are you going?" Robert said, even though he did know where she was going. She had taken the wrong conclusion.
"I think it is better if I go home. It was nice meeting you again." She nodded towards the other woman.
"Please stop." Robert grabbed her hand, what made an electrical wave go through her hand. "This is not what it looks like."
The other woman had in the meantime turned towards them and smiled at her.
"I am not sure what else I can think of this."
"Cora, can I please introduce you to Rosamund." He still held her hand, he freed his other arm from the women's hand. "She is my sister."
Cora felt a stone drop in her stomach. His sister? Why did she think he was there with another date? She made a fool of herself. Ashamed she shook Rosamund's hand. "Hello, Rosamund. I am Cora Levinson."
Levinson? Levinson, that name did ring a bell. Robert thought.
Rosamund shook her hand with a polite smile. "I think, I better go. I am sorry for barging in, I thought he was going to eat with John. Enjoy your evening." She turned towards Robert. "Please call Mama."
"I will." Robert answered. He still tried the name Levinson in his head, but nothing came up.
Cora brushed with her thumb over Robert's hand. "I am sorry." She muttered.
Robert pressed his lips on her cheek, close to her ear. "I am sorry for being late and coming inside with my sister. I can understand why you thought I was playing with you. I promise that I would never do that. I am so relieved to see you again after all these months, come let us sit down. I can eat a horse; I am that hungry."
Cora chuckled. She had been surprised when he kissed her cheek, but she loved the sensation, and she could get used to it. The same as she could get used to hold his hand. They were strong and big, but at the same time soft and caring. Her own slender hand fitted perfectly inside his.
+++
"So, when my father was recovered enough, I decided to come back home." Robert wrapped up his story. He had told Cora everything, about his father's stroke and why he had to move up to Downton. She had been surprised when he revealed that he was a viscount. At first, she had not understood the meaning of viscount. He had forgotten that she was not born in the UK and that in the United States these titles were not used.
"I am glad you came back to London." Cora reached over the table and touched with her finger tips his hand.
"With that I can only agree." Robert smiled and took her fingers in his hand.
"But there is one thing I do not understand. Why are you here in Richmond, John is not here today, and you live in Westminster. How come you are shopping in a supermarket in this area?"
Robert forgot that he had not told her about his Richmond house. He had been vague the last time about his living situation. "I have a second home here in Richmond. Sometimes the busy city live gets too much, and I retreat to my house in this neighbourhood."
"I think I understand, although I could never live in the city centre. I love the peace and quiet that we have here. Now and then you can hear beautiful music flowing through the streets and that is what makes this place magical.

Attractive New Vanilla Perfume
Pair this together with your favorite worn-in leather jacket to increase your smolder issue by tenfold. Since then, I’ve graduated onto a more subtle fragrance wardrobe and traded physique sprays for actual big-girl eau de parfums. My vainness is well-stocked with fragrances each luxe and indie, however none have yet to elicit the identical response Rachel introduced out in my middle-school self vanilla perfume.
The intoxicating scent that appeared to embody sophistication, sweetness, and sexiness all at once? No one ever advised me I smelled delicious, but each time I spritzed myself, I felt instantly more desirable .
Then, it develops into heftier notes of cherry and caramel.
This warm, floral perfume provides off a hint of spice that strikes the proper balance between sexy and complex.
Vanille Insensée opens up with a blast of fresh glowing citrus and vanilla – with whispers of coriander spice and a few woodiness in the background.
A spicy tackle the normally gourmand and cloyingly sweet vanilla, this fragrance has lots of depth and character.
Pure Madagascar vanilla, vanilla perfume creamy tonka bean, & soft heliotrope mix for a seductive expression of nature. Part of Guerlain's Exclusive collection, this was actually created by Jean-Paul Guerlain, the fourth and last master perfume within the Guerlain dynasty. It's a fragile vanilla splashed in boozy rum – warm, sweet, sexy and thoroughly intoxicating. Pure vanilla opens with fresh jasmine and lime then beds down into oak moss, woods and spicy coriander. The result smells easy, understated, cosy, and elegant like wrapping your self up in the softest cashmere jumper. Impactful and memorable, Nest’s Midnight Fleur Eau de Parfum combines exotic woods, black amber, and patchouli with the warmth of vanilla orchid.
For greatest outcomes, spray our fragrances on those pulse factors the place the blood runs closest to the pores and skin; behind the ears, inside wrists, behind the knees or the décolletage. [newline]These days it can be discounted as too cloying or too fundamental but lest we overlook, it's a bona fide aphrodisiac with a confirmed capability to assuage, seduct and even enhance arousal. All merchandise are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we might earn an affiliate commission.
A powdery true vanilla, this isn’t too candy or too artificial, albeit it's a little little bit of each. Perfect for these days whenever you wish to odor like one thing warm and cosy, that is an inoffensive blind buy. However, vanilla is one notice which may be beautifully utilised in a fragrance without it costing lots. So, if you’re a fan of this sweet spice, we suggest the following budget-friendly perfumes with completely different versions of this note to strive.
A signature mix of pure essential oils, nature similar oils, and botanically derived aromas. [newline]Even although it’s is difficult to supply, synthetic vanilla flavoring and fragrance have made this sweetie rather more accessible. It’s reasonably priced, readily available and meaning more sweetness, muffins and vanilla for all. It’s a pleasing, well-blended perfume that showcases the eponymous vanilla with out smelling bakery-like or overly female. Lignin is a category of advanced polymers that give woody plants their structure. Imitation vanilla derived from lignin was once made with the pulp waste from the paper business. So don’t overspray this one; 1 – 2 sprays MAX …and you’re set.
With hints of sweet tonka bean, Vanillary warms and develops on the pores and skin to create an intoxicating aroma that's been a buyer favourite for years. The smoky notes of tobacco mix harmoniously with the rich white vanillic notes. If you’re on the lookout for the most effective vanilla perfume for long winter nights, look no further. I would describe Vanille Fatale as a delicious fragrance.
Delicious and candy, this scent is also available in a rollerball model for individuals who need just a touch with out committing an extreme amount of. The flowering vanilla orchid vines take up to three years to mature and as soon as the vanilla beans are fully grown, they must be on the vine for a minimal of 9 months before vanilla perfume harvesting. Plus, it takes about five to seven pounds of vanilla beans to produce one pound of vanilla – it’s plenty of work, however it’s a candy reward. On the other finish of the spectrum is Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille which highlights the seductive and sensual side of vanilla. The fragrance opens with a big intoxicating blast of each vanilla and tobacco. While the vanilla starts off as a sugar-sweet gourmand, it quickly turns right into a more delicate and darkish sweetness.
Both women and men can enjoy wearing this elegant perfume. Vanilla is commonly related to feminity, however this product has proven to be a best-seller for men as properly. The smell of Black Opium derives from a powerful blend of pure vanilla and occasional. The help of the primary accords comes from numerous floral notes. These notes bring the alluring effects of coffee and vanilla back to the bottom in a beautiful method.
For a barely more subtle fragrance, go for vanilla perfumes with a heart of woody patchouli that creates a wealthy, heady, finally ultra-feminine scent. Those seeking a extra trendy scent should look for perfumes with more masculine or uncommon notes, like Jo Malone’s Vanilla & Anise Cologne or Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille. Given how tricky vanilla is to domesticate, the vast majority of the vanilla scents and flavourings you may come throughout are synthetic (99% of them, in fact). Choose right and it could possibly smell phenomenal – creamy, sweet, smoky, spicy or floral. But first you have to find one which's not too sickly and never too candy. This is one of Atelier Cologne’s best-selling fragrances, thanks to the candy vanilla notes, which rework into a sultry, rich aroma as soon as utilized.
In reality, it still has a hint of the original Alien DNA – but with some added candy creamy horny vanilla. Lira opens up with a candy creamy glowing orange citrus vibe – from a blood orange and vanilla/caramel combo… with hints of liquorice and cinnamon. The resinous woods and vanilla continue into the dry down and you get a deep earthy notice with whispers of incense. It’s like a creamy vanilla combined with a burning wood vibe. Sometimes Magic Happens - An Interview With Guerlain's Delphine Jelk
image: Persolaise – I thought about two lovers hanging out in Paris, during the night. I imagined that patchouli is my lover and that I have to tame it, to make it mine. So I added some of the vanilla tincture that we make at Guerlain. We cut vanilla beans into small pieces and we put them in alcohol for 21 days to obtain a tincture. It’s not a sweet vanilla. It’s spicy, a little smoky, woody,…

Scent and memory
(And here’s the piece...)
My earliest memories are of scent. The corner shop in which I was born, with its atmosphere of fresh cardboard and old newspapers, and the coal fire that smoked, and the cellar in which my grandfather kept potatoes and pickles and home-brewed wine. The scent of the Mustela baby lotion that my mother used on my skin, and which she always brought home from France. The blue-green reek of the tidal flats on the island of Noirmoutier, where my family had a house; and which to me was the smell of the sea, so that every other coast seemed to me to be missing some essential ingredient.
Scent awakens memory; it speaks to the other senses; it seems to exist outside of time; it sometimes even awakens the dead. My grandfather’s pipe tobacco, Clan, has such a sweet and distinctive scent that, twenty years after his death, it still evokes his presence. And its colour is a faded red, like the fisherman’s smock he used to wear when we went sailing together, and the colour still smells of sunshine, and wind, and a hundred happy memories.
To me, most scents have colours. It’s a form of synaesthesia, in which the brain confuses stimuli, converting sounds to shapes, or sounds, or tastes, giving colours to days of the week, or in my case, converting colours to scent, so that sometimes I find it difficult to separate one from the other. Perhaps this is why, in my house, there are so many brightly-coloured things; and why I always like to keep my favourite perfumes close by, alongside my books and my paintings.
Perfume is my greatest indulgence. Not chocolate, not shoes, but bottles of scent; dozens - no, hundreds - of bottles, each one containing a genie that, when uncorked, can work everyday miracles of memory and mood. Some perfumes are little capsules of time; like the Ô de Lancôme I wore the year I first met my husband – I was sixteen, at sixth-form college - and its colour is the same bright-green as the pullover I used to wear, a fresh and vibrant citrus scent that still brings back those happy days more clearly than a photograph. Or Guerlain’s Chamade, with its dark chypre base, which I wore at university – being an impoverished student then, I couldn’t afford the eau de parfum, but used the bath oil as perfume instead and thought myself very sophisticated. Or Yves Rocher’s Ispahan, which somehow smells of our first home, a rather run-down terrace house, with colourful murals on the walls and a perpetual fog of patchouli and frankincense.
Our sense of smell is the first of our senses to develop. As infants, it is the sense of smell that first connects us to the world. I remember, in the maternity ward, when my daughter was born, holding her – just a few hours old – up to a vase of freesias standing by the bedside. Her reaction was immediate; her little head turned; her mouth opened in an immediate and instinctive desire to explore and to experience.
As adults, we can too often become jaded by the multitude of sense–impressions coming at us all the time. Traffic, televisions, radios, billboards, mobile phones, the constant comings and goings of other people – all can contribute to a sensory overload that can lead to stress and confusion.
But close your eyes, relax, and the sense of smell comes back into its own. Scent speaks directly to the subconscious, sometimes evoking whole scenes that even photographs cannot convey. It has strong emotional associations, too; often linked with memory. Nothing brings back the past like a scent; nothing speaks so clearly and directly to the heart.
I once held a writing seminar in a women’s prison near my home. The women were all different ages and from wildly different backgrounds; at first I struggled to find a way to engage their creativity. Then I asked: “What smells do you miss?” Each reply was a story. By the end of the day, I had poetry; short fiction; essays; letters to the dead. The next time I came, I brought perfume samples. In that sterile and utilitarian environment, each one was like an oasis.
Another time, a friend of mine suffered a stroke that left her completely paralysed, unable to speak or to swallow. I knew she dreamed of food and drink, so I brought her the closest things I could find; fruit-scented lip salves from the Body Shop; pomegranate bath bombs from Lush; chocolate-scented lotions to rub into her hands and feet. On her birthday, I made her a virtual birthday cake – a cocktail of scents in a bottle. I used dark chocolate, Kahlua, cinnamon and black pepper. It was inedible, but smelt divine. She kept it by her bed for six months, until she was be able to eat again – in spite of her doctor’s prediction that this might never happen. Such is the positive power of scent and the energy it can harness.
I first became aware of perfumes through my great-Aunt Marie, an elegant old Parisienne, who had once known Chagall and Edith Piaf, and who until the day she died, always dressed in pink and white, and never wore any perfume other than Chanel Number 5. I remember the glass-stoppered bottle that stood on her dressing-room table, and the scent of impossible flowers, like something out of a distant dream. She was the one who taught me that scent is the oldest magic there is; a scent can change your identity; can bring back the ghosts of long-lost loves; like a fairy godmother, transform the most timid of wallflowers into a heroine, just for one night. Chanel Number 5 still brings her back, and she was the one who encouraged me to haunt perfume departments, to collect samples and bath oils, to discover the scents that would help me express my personality.
Nowadays, I tend to use scent much as I would my wardrobe. I have so many bottles that my husband bought me a cabinet as a gift, in which I keep all my perfume bottles, neatly categorized and ready to use. The top shelf is for gourmand fragrances, with their notes of gingerbread; vanilla; honey and chocolate. Muegler’s Angel; Rochas’ Tocade; Kurkadjian’s Absolue du Soir. The second is for florals; Chanel no. 19; Fracas; Trésor; Paris. The third, for herbal and citrus scents; Jo Malone’s Lime Basil; Acqua de Parma; Guerlain’s Mitsouko. The bottom shelf is for orientals: Habit Rouge; Coromandel; L’Autre; the lovely creamy sandalwood of Chanel’s Bois des Iles.
Every morning I choose a scent according to my mood. Wistful; exuberant; romantic; brave. Some days I look for an old friend; on other days I need a breath of fresh air. When I’m writing a new book, I often choose a scent on behalf of my protagonist. I wear it much in the same way that method actors sometimes use scent to get into character. Vianne Rocher was Aqua de Parma; Blueeyedboy was l’Heure Bleue; the seductive Zozie de l’Alba was scented with Guerlain’s Habit Rouge. The book I’m writing right now smells of a new Chanel perfume, Boy: a light and lovely unisex blend of lavender and vanilla, with which I’ve recently become more than a little obsessed.
For me, the most important aspect of attraction has always been about feeling good. There is a tangible radiance to well-being that no cosmetic can duplicate. That’s why I tend to give more thought to the scent I wear than to clothes or makeup, or even shoes. My wardrobe is made up of bottles, neatly lined up in my scent cabinet. Some are old friends; some, new discoveries. Each one fits me perfectly, tailored to my changing moods.
My little black dress is Coromandel; I wear it with heels and attitude. My sexy number is Bois des Iles, with its creamy sandalwood scent. Francis Kurkadjian’s Acqua Universalis is my favourite pair of jeans; almost, but not quite unisex, fresh and informal and effortless. I wear Fracas when I want to turn heads; with its blast of tuberose, it’s my strapless Oscar frock. Yves Rocher’s Ispahan is the hippy dress I can’t bear to throw out; I still have half a bottle (it’s now sadly discontinued) that I wear on special occasions. Houbigant’s Chantilly is there in the mornings for when I want to feel sixteen again. I wore it throughout my teenage years, and it always takes me back.
Besides, at 52, whatever I wear, it’s getting less and less likely that people will say in all honesty: “You look fabulous.” But very often, people do say (as did a grumpy Head Porter on a recent trip to my old college, startled out of his apathy by a passing whiff of Guerlain’s Samsara); “You smell fabulous.” Because beauty isn’t about how you look, but how you make other people feel. And whatever can make a Head Porter smile, on a dull autumn day in Cambridge, is surely a power to conjure with.

Scents and perfumes I associate with the signs - Scorpio Sun/Venus/Rising
Something dark and sexy, slightly obnoxious and loud but with a hint of mystery.
Black Perfecto by Guerlain - Amaretto with cherries. Reminds you of a drunk, late-night rendezvous in Paris. Anytime you smell cherries again, you will think of them. (sour cherry, almond, leather)
Addict by Dior - A fragrance that screams sex. Mysterious, but very open once you get to know them. For the adventurous Scorpios with a reputation who aren’t afraid to be themselves and don’t care about other’s opinions. (blackberry, jasmine, vanilla)
Tobacco Vanille or Black Orchid by Tom Ford - Both are obnoxious and loud, but have a certain mystery and sex-appeal to them. Black Orchid is the scent which once you smell it -you never really forget it and it lies in your head...similarly to Scorpio. Tobacco Vanille will remind you of Scorpio’s unlit cigarettes and the warmth you experienced once you got to know them. (Tobacco Vanille - vanilla, tobacco leaf, spicy notes; Black Orchid - chocolate, truffle, patchouli, orchid)
