Muffet - Snowdin tea and bakery owner. Close relationship with Skeles. Puts cayenne pepper in many versions foods - spicy sweets. Has a few (like 3) setup for spider checkers - a checkers game with an otcoganol board. Waffle-coffee house. Speciality is spider Waffles, Soft Boiled spider Eggs, and Spider coffee

Muffet is a very hairy spider/rancho with scales/hairs all over body like the fluff of a moth. Helps with insulation. Smaller spider monsters are primarily covered in fluff for extra insulation with only tips of legs visible. Spiders wear little uniforms - usually hats/ribbons/tassels

Diner is covered in trap magic - one of many reasons no one causes a lot of trouble - snowdin in general assumed to be covered

Unlike skelebros Muffet can completely hide her trap magic unless someone is looking for it. Or at the very least her anchors are extremely small/needs less.

Smaller spiders may also use trap magic -> mainly just related to their physical silk.

Silk is heavily used in wardrobe and general materials.

Muffet must be seated the majority of the time the diner is open due to outgrowing the building. She doesn’t need to move much to reach every corner of the diner.

Double doors allow Muffet to leave through front if needed but she prefers to use the basement exit that leads to an enlarged basement - big enough for her to move properly, with a separate door out the back of the diner.

Muffet does not often actually leave and the back door is usually locked tight and hidden behind trash and webs. Since she has space to move in her home below she doesn’t see a lot of reason to leave.

Enjoys cooking and making sweet confections with her kin. Finds Sans and Papyrus cute - seen Papyrus grow up. A little older than Sans.

Spider eggs served to help keep populations acceptable. Boiled in a dust bath -> turning the interior monster into a weird edible savory jelly-like creature that is excited to be eaten. They feel no pain and usually find weird entertainment from being eaten in pieces. Not offended if eaten head first.

Diner spiders may actually be at LV 2 -> spiders have their own leveling customs. Basement spiders LV 1 - part of why Muffet and Diner Spiders are partial to Paps and Sans

While being a diner doesn’t actually care how long anyone is there. Closes late opens early -> most of Muffets time is dedicated to business with closing hours uses for rest, self care, and baking for the next day.

Probably has early days and maybe takes a “Websday” off once a month or so. !!she would be big enough and strong enough to easily go to Hotland or the capital if she wanted fancier supplies. !! <- gives part of reason for being so dedicated to the diner. Maybe gets special stuff for her kin/herself. Also cares about residents of Snowdin in her own way.

Like the idea of some of the bigger spiders acting rough and having little spiked bats to emphasize her kind of hard-punk/street gang aesthetic

Alphys - captain of the guard, watches over Waterfall but mostly has attention elsewhere ruling by name alone. Has Stone generally look after it. Originally from Hotland, met Undyne while stationed in Waterfall. Ascends (playing with words dunno if like that) in genocide route. Maybe something Al or Alph <- not a lot of options even with Alf.

Absolute Alphys? Alphys Ascendant

Her gameplay is similiar to Undynes except instead of blocking the player has to shoot her attacks like a game of asteroids.

Undyne - Royal scientist spicy fish yandere-like/light. Drinks beer enjoys super violent manga. Mew Mew -> Bork Bork

Jewel has a rough relationship with Undyne. Initially they were friends but after Undyne met Alphys she started to gain more level. It once got away from her and Jewel had to shortcut away from her as she was undeterred by Sans protection due to her own relationship with Alphys. She moved to Hotland not long after; secretly regretting her actions and not trusting herself in Waterfall any longer.

Napstablook -> Retraton - RTT // Retraton Para -> translates into shared HP forcing use of consumables along with cursor that copy’s players movements // maybe Retrabot to play off being an automaton vs mettaton being robot // Retrabot Para

Retraton held in place/ can’t move legs. Instead commands show through others monsters/puppets/effects. Usually broadcasts tragedies. (stone in turn loves tragedies lmao)

Has Rounded mascot form - form that is held in place. Para is transformation - still held but with extending arms.

Retraton Para - has extra arms.

Previously Napstablook -> taken to Undyne when Alphys found her missing her home; neighbor of Undyne. Forced into robot when he kept trying to return home.

Songs are very sad and yearning. TV shows are A Lot but also uses a lot of effects because it’s not like there’s infinite monsters.

May not actively star is show frequently but instead use puppets || marionette puppets his cast and narrates -> sometimes puppets are real monsters Retraton has some sort of relationship with surrounding monsters hinting at his Para form.

Para - kills Undyne before protag can activating Para form. Para uses Undynes soul. Might kill surrounding monsters / connected monsters as well.

Retraton - no use of legs - part of why puppets. Maybe needs to remain charged or frequently and feels more comfortable plugged in.

Arms > legs.

Box Form -> literally just a box with arms - no wheel. Has to drag himself or walk with his arms. Maybe has a hover butt? Or a skateboard. Or has lots of little legs. Roomba.

Mettaton(MTT)- Hapstablook

Instead of lie on the floor feeling like garbage they sit on the roof and consider love.

Gaster and Riverperson -

Stay in their respective posts however Gaster speaks in song and the Riverperson speaks in hands

Riverperson - gondola (gondoga) dog theme, speaks in hands, gondola above river because river water is too dangerous

Grillby - fire sale; father of fireflies literally flames with wings. Has a pet Fryfly - long fry-like fly. Instead of forcing player onto strings covers the field with hazards and fire. Have to switch and jump over between flames.

Pacified by firesauce (increases damage, possible burn damage, take one damage for spice) or Frenchfire (a firefly with an exploding baguette - covering the board around you in fire for one turn and burning any incoming attacks) or the purchase of either from his Hotland firesale.

Prices may be inverted to some extent -> Hotland Prices are cheaper but u need both items to pacify him. Ruins are achievable but ridiculously expensive. Only need one to immediately pacify him. Differentiated by name is Hotland Firesauce vs Old/Ruin Firesauce

He is extra sensitive to ones that relate to himself or his family, able to sense his brother getting upset about something even beyond their own universe. His Clairvoyance seems to work differently than his father’s, as it is triggered much differently and not triggered at will.”

Description: “as a Lich’s kin, aka a half-lich, he can use and learn incantations like how a lich is able to do, however his incantations have more limits, cool-downs and sometimes side-effects that it wouldn’t be if he was an actual lich.”

Notes: Dragons and fairies are the major other users of incantation shouts/spells. Papyrus seems to only use, or only can use, healing incantations of any origin, with a drawback of possibly harming himself in the process.

Incantation: “Vokrii Zii Tol Los Horvutah Ko Vokun!” (single target ver.: “Vokrii Krent Zii!)

Translation: “Revive Souls that are trap[ped] in Darkness!” (single target Ver.: Restore Broken Soul!)

Description: a special incantation in Dovahzul that can cleanse an entity of darkness and corruption, depending on how much it is corrupted depends for how long and much it cleanses them for. If unable to fully cleanse or permanently cleanse the soul it will paralyze the target for up to 2 hours, depending on how effective it was. This holds no side effects towards himself.

- “Breath of Life” Incantation (Light origin)

Incantation: “FEKI! BLAHLAH RACKABOO WOO MEKA MEEFE”

Translation: “Friend! Say hello to life again”

Description: Call into the aether for the ability to bring life back into your allies!

Effect: Group heal, brings life back into all fallen allies, as Papyrus is Undead his defense will go down by 6% for the next 2 hours he is in his target’s presence.

- Undeath:

Description: as an undead monster, due to his Elvish ancestors being cursed (or blessed depending on who you ask) with undeath, Papyrus is immortal and immune to many mortal plights, like disease, suffocation, starvation, sleep deprivation, old age, poison, and much more but it comes with drawbacks, like a weakness to things like fire, salt and silver, and due to being a skeleton, he can only truly die in battle or if his skull is completely destroyed. Any other possible undeath ending things will just incapacitate him.”

Description: remove all debuffs and negative status effects from all allies, 9-turn cool down.

- Protective shield.

Description: summon a shield to protect all allies for 10 turns, all shielded allies take 80% less damage.

- “Lich Soul”

Description: as a half-lich, due to his lich parent, Papyrus possesses many passive abilities a lich has, one is to have his soul persist after death and/or live outside his body and easily become a lich if he so chooses.

Usage: makes him highly resistant to soul trapping abilities, as he can perfectly function without his soul physically in his body as if it was. Though his other passives have a wide range of uses.

- “Truesight”

Description: as a Lich’s kin, aka a half-lich, due to his lich parent, Papyrus possesses Truesight, the ability to see in darkness, into the ether, and through illusions, transmutations and invisibility.

- "Child of the Night"

Description: as an undead, he is a Child of the Night, meaning he is much stronger at night, he’s immune to all dark and black magic as well as corruption related attacks, instead absorbing it, like any undead, enough could reanimate him. However, unlike most undead he is more resilient towards the white arts, but it still would harm him though it cannot kill him, but in turn his dark abilities are much weaker.

Description: Rid all party members of EMOTIONAL debuffs

Usage: this is mainly useful to get rid of fear, dazed or nausea debuffs, though Revoke has the same effect and eliminates more different types of debuffs, Cleanse Minds doesn't have a cool down.

Description: revive a fallen/K.Oed, but not dead, ally to full HP

- "Nerves of Steel"

Status effect: Papyrus is immune to all insanity depletion or manipulation ACTs or abilities.

Revitalize:

Description: adds the regeneration effect to self or another, regenerating 5 hp each turn for 7 turns, will deal lingering damage to a undead target (unless dark/necromantic version is used)

Description: Heals a single human target to full HP

- Healing prayer.

Description: Heal a single ally to half health and they take 50% less damage for 3 turns.

Description: calling upon the skies above, he can summon a life giving rain upon all party members, however, due to his undead nature, this hurts him in the process.

- Revive

Description: Papyrus zaps the life back into a dying/fallen down ally restoring them to full health, if they are human, Papyrus can return their life force to them, causing the human’s body to reabsorb its soul.

Rejuvenate

Description: "heal 15 HP to party members and increase their HP by 20 points for 7 turns, 8 turn cool down"

- “Ray of Sunlight”

Description: call upon the sun to fuel a damaging ray of light to strike his foe, however aftershock may damage him as well. Only works outdoors during the daytime when it’s clear and sunny.

Behaviors when allies are KO-ed, or killed:

- Normal behavior:

He’ll raise his downed ally, (even if undead, with his necromantic healing) Papyrus is an extremely talented healer and it is very hard for any of his allies to die while on his team, but if they do die, he will focus more on his healer role and start using more stronger heals on his remaining allies, if he has no remaining allies, he will still keep fighting.

If Papyrus must flee, He will always transport as many allies with him to safety as he can.

Papyrus’ “nerves of steel” ability makes him immune to sanity depletion.

- Sans C. Gaster:

If downed: Papyrus will raise him back using necromantic healing, unless Papyrus also has low HP while there is no one else in the party, then he’ll escape and take Sans with him.

If killed: Papyrus will usually fight harder if his HP is high or flee if on low HP, however, he will refuse to abandon any other allies, if they are present.

- Wingding Gaster:

If downed: Papyrus will quickly raise him back using necromantic healing, and prioritize that over healing other allies including himself, unless Wingding tells him to do otherwise.

If killed: Papyrus will be absolutely terrified and flee no matter everyone else’s HP level or whomever is in the current party, unless Wingding tells him to do otherwise.

Other characters reactions to Papyrus getting downed or K.Oed

Chara (general reaction to allies stronger than them)

If someone stronger than Chara wasn’t enough to beat the opponent, Chara will think they probably won’t have much of a chance and they’ll flee unless the opponent is at extremely low HP or Chara is at Max HP.

If the character is downed, in this case Papyrus, depending on how scared Chara is and how easy it will be to escape with the ally, Chara may or may not leave them behind

Asgore

If downed: Asgore will take him to safety.

If Killed: Asgore will either flee out of heartbreak or fight harder in a grief filled rage. His sanity

drops to 15%

Muffet

She’ll be upset and have worse aim but will hit harder. Her sanity drops to 80%, this is also the only thing that can drop Muffet’s sanity meter.

Wingding Gaster

If downed: Wingding will revive him using “Undead revival” ability, depending on the situation he may order him to flee.

If killed: Wingding will resurrect him at some point, if Wingding feels like he may lose the fight, He’ll immediately resurrect him with the “raise dead” ability and order Papyrus to flee, if Wingding feels like he may win the fight, Wingding will kill/eliminate the target before resurrecting Papyrus. His sanity drops to 10% during the period of time his child is not resurrected. if he for whatever reason is unable to resurrect Sans/Papyrus, instead his sanity will deplete to -66666

Undyne

Undyne’s stats go up, but her sanity drops by 23%, she will only flee if on low HP alone and attacker’s HP is not under half health.

Sans

Downed: if the opponent has Low HP, Sans will finish them off. If not, Sans will flee to get Papyrus to safety.

Killed: Sans will be so horrified he’ll flee immediately, Sans will even abandon all other allies, unless Wingding is also there, then Sans will stay. if Wingding is not there, he’ll retreat to Wingding, wherever he may be. If Wingding (Papyrus dying second) is also dead, Sans’ sanity will drop to 0% instantly and he’ll flee, no matter his HP level or the opponent's.

Trivia:

Papyrus is the only adult member of the Gaster family to not have any children.

It's possible for Papyrus to become the last member of both the Gaster Family and the skeleton race entirely in certain neutral endings, which he takes with a heavy heart but is willing to accept it.

Papyrus is the youngest skeleton to exist and one of only 6 (pre-events) or 2 (current events, post Chara killing Toriel and leaving the underground, though technically Gaster didn't 100% die as his soul is still intact, he just hasn't been able to remanifist himself due to the crack in his soul gem) skeleton monsters left in existence.

- Papyrus is extremely skilled in the arts, though he is a notoriously bad singer.

- Papyrus can play multiple instruments but his favorite are the drums.

- Papyrus has the highest resistance to mind altering effects compared to the rest of his family

- Papyrus doesn’t drink alcohol nor smoke and finds it undignified also finds it pointless as he’s a skeleton

Sometimes Papyrus wants to admit Sans to a psychiatric hospital but he knows Wingding won't allow it nor will Sans go passively.

- Papyrus loves his brother very much, even though sometimes they fight and Papyrus will be a lot less negatively affected if Sans died than if it was the other way around.

- If Sans died, Papyrus would mourn him but be somewhat happy that their sibling codependency is over.

- Papyrus likes rock music the most, but enjoys all music as he believes all artforms

should be appreciated.

- Papyrus used to be a nurse but he didn't find it to be his passion, so he became a cartoonist for the newspaper instead but due how much free time he gets with that, he missed the busy workload of being a nurse, so he got multiple side jobs to keep him busy.

- Papyrus ABSOLUTELY hates being idle and always wants to be productive

F.P gets along with other alternate versions of him quite well, and seems to establish friendly relations with other AU characters as easily as he does with characters of his own.

- Papyrus is a social butterfly and makes friends quite easily

- Papyrus loves social gatherings, though hates how he has to drag his brother to them just for Sans to be a total wallflower there.

- Papyrus is still registered and licensed to practice medicine as a nurse in all Hotland Districts.

- Papyrus runs a pasta stand instead of a hotdog stand like Undertale Sans did.

- Papyrus’ shoes have his initials on them, with his left outsole having “P” and the right having “G”

- Papyrus loves to paint and do arts and crafts

- Papyrus likes to bake but he’s not good at making them taste good, though he is good at making them look pretty

- Papyrus is the first Biomancer in 500 years

- Papyrus can speak all languages

- Papyrus has a low amount of dark mana and possess light mana, which makes his undead weaknesses less prominent but inversely it also makes his undead abilities less strong

- Papyrus is a grandmaster in chess

- Papyrus is extremely emotionally and socially intelligent, more so than his relatives

- Papyrus is the strongest healer to exist however his undead status means his healing abilities hurt him in turn

- Papyrus very much rejects his dark nature instead of embracing it like Sans or just not caring about it like Wingding

- Papyrus is the most sane out of his family.

- Papyrus is usually referred to as the orange one, but it’s unknown if that’s even his

favorite color.

- Due to Sans’ history of being a hitman/assassin that works for the crown, Papyrus has a history of cleaning up after Sans, so Sans can move onto his next hit-target

- If Sw!Fallenswap had a dusttale/dustswap version of it, the Skelebros would not kill each other, they’ll just join the other in the killing spree with the mindset of “I guess this is what we are doing now”

- Despite Papyrus’ pacifist and caring nature, he is extremely desensitized to death and won’t be bothered when others die (unless it's a family member or a child) as it's "a natural part of life" and "as an immortal, it's necessary to learn to let go of any grief when others die around you"

- Papyrus was born in November of 1932, thus is 9 years younger than Sans

- Papyrus isn’t as close to his father as Sans is, but loves him just the same

- Papyrus is a lot more independent and social than Sans

- Papyrus takes a lot of traits from his Grandparent Semi.

Papyrus is a extremely strong healer though his downside is most of his heals do damage to him due to being an Undead

Papyrus has the most social relationships out of his family

Papyrus is the only explicitly right handed member of his family, with the rest being ambidextrous or left handed in Sans' case.

Papyrus is the only support battle role character in the Gaster Family, though the other Gaster members do have support abilities they aren't as plentiful.

Papyrus will occasionally wear feminine clothing even though he presents himself as masculine, usually played as a joke or him trying to be funny or to annoy people.

During the few times he does, he doesn't consider himself dressing feminine as crossdressing or drag because he isn't male nor female but a sexless entity, and thinks "if it is considered crossdressing then technically all the things [he] wear[s] is automatically crossdressing depending on how you look at it."

Ashe - She prefers traditional Monstrin foods, which are typically crunchy friedleafy greens paired with different toppings, luckily Okinomiyaki fits that definition well. She loves barbequed meats, like char siu, and a good lick on a lemon every now and then Aivoni - LOVER of seafood, anything on one of those grill setups too. She loves a good lobster roll or a nice seafood paella, but at home she'll happily enjoy a lazily made pasta dish Vae - ANNNYTHING sweet, but especially pastries. A good carrot cake, or a good cheesecake. she loves carnival type food like funnel cakes and cotton candy too. she also loves to eat raw veggies as a snack, go ahead and give her a basket of turnips and watch... Mastiff - BURRITOS. sure its not what she grew up with, but she LOVES a nice wrapped up giant burrito with EVERYTHING she can fit into it. she likes to put lots of rice in it though! otherwise she loves dumplings and pierogi! -after this point, my gf added her input Vess - smoothies of all types, she loves a good mango and anything thats nice and sweet, she doesnt eat much otherwise Merina - junk foods, anything she can eat lazing around that fills her up, cheap stuff like burgers and fries is her specialty. if you want to treat her? give her some good spicy wings... Okapi - [I need to develop her more, so sorry!!] Prongy - So in Nebraska they got these things called runzas! its bread wrapped around a mix of beef and cabbage with plenty of pepper and spices! she likes one with cheese, and pair it with a kool aid burst!! Cammy - cammy LOVES to grill. a good steak, make it rare, give her an interesting meat to cook with. he'll gnaw on a juicy burger as well, they dont care if a rare burger could give them food poisoning, LOL! Kroma - Cheap ramen, she doesnt do the broth, just noodles with the flavoring. She loves a cheap conveyor belt sushi place too... unless youre paying. then you'll hear her talk all about how much she loves Uni and Otoro. Imp - Anything fried and oily, she loves some takoyaki, calamari, and okinomiyaki (like Ashe, that's the only time they get along). You'll also find her begging for your fries. Sam - Make it cheap, make it fast, unless its a good pizza portuguesa, she'll happily wait for that! She'll help cammy along with grilling and make a really nice chimmichuri, but with food, she aint picky at all Trace - Food? nah, she has a monster energy and a meal replacement. she's more focused on her gaming than to care about having a meal. If you're serving her? it better not have any weird textures. or else she'll be sad!

Maltha and Ly's world is lacking a bit with food BUT Maltha likes salty and savory things, she has a weird relationship with meat as her cloned kin are used in the meat industry but.. she uh.. has a taste Ly has never really had real food other than beet-like vegetables that they fed their livestock, but if offered the taste of a nice meaty thing? they might like it!! TW VENT AT SOME PARTS

y'know the mix of horrid chronic fatigue and insatiable numbness and the dissociation just makes me feel like I missing out on life, I yearn to go outside, to go play, to have fun, just run around but I cant. I sit in my room on tumblr or youtube wasting the day away wishing I did something more productive. I feel like a husk of person I feel like Im in a movie theater alone watching the most boring movie ive ever seen, I feel lonely while also being too socially drained to watch and respond the the video my friend sent me. Not to mention when my parents used to fight, my moms road rage/anger issues, it caused me to fucking terrifed of conflict so sometimes I minimize my needs when around other people and constantly asking about things and if im doing it right but also worrying if im annoying them with all my questions because my grandma has gotton mad at me for that before i think either that or it was me asking why she loved my cousin more than me because she yelled and fought with my dad because i wouldnt give my cousin my fukcing chicken nuggets my dad bought for me like fuck you i mean im sorry grandma

The anxiety and hyperactivity of my ADHD spikes up at night so either i got to sleep and wake up in 13 hours or I can stay up till 4am, go to sleep and wake 13 hours (Just feeling a lot worse). Im literally shaking as I write this and i can tell if im just so fucking restless even if im fucking tired (its 3:38am) or anxiety or the entire kiwi strawberry monster I just drank Its ok im drinking water a lot of it i just need to get my thoughts out of my head because its like a thousond of the dvd bouncing tv screen in my head rn idk if its getting better idk if im gonna post this too maybe idk any ways im shaking oh btw i might have non-diabetic hypoglycemia and i have to get a bunch shots next week and I really hate the doctors it always makes me really scared and uncomfy n shit and idk why damn im shaking a lot. I almost freaked out bc i cant find my charger and my tablet almost died but i have another one ive been using so i just used that but i want to know where my charger went :(

istg ive been eating fucking pasta for the lat 3 weeks and i hate it i hate it i hate it HATE it every. fucking. meal. I cant. anyyways I kinda think im a daave fiction kin (like DSAF) but im 90% sure im just and otherlinker and I just want to feel speacial or some shit but whos know i have the worst imposter syndrome known to man (I have almost every symptom of Cfs and my friend has asked if i have it but nahhh i defs dont) but also i had a weird experience once. I was like listen (its getting hard to type with the shakiness :0) ing to 2 dave and henry playlists and i kept listening to the henry one and I was in the car and i was falling and out of sleep when i saw like flash of dave but it didnt look like cannon dave he looked different he was mush more blue and he was leaning against a wall with messy longish hair and he had a hat and scars all over him and he had a purple buttoned shit that was fulled buttoned up and the perspective i saw was like a photo someone had taken and he seemed just chilling perhaps talking to jack? idfk but yeah theres my weird experience like the best way i can explain this feeling towards dave is "Idkk if i was you but probably mightve at some point like most likely at some point"

i hope i sound legiable (if i do post this AND someone actually reads this all) it is 4:08am and I feel too many things once i probably will sleep at 5 or 6 anyways byebye

Well, that certainly made things much easier. Kiara glanced at Salem who’s gaze was fixed on Cinder. Cinder had said that Salem didn’t control the grimm, yet, with a mere flick of her wrist . . . oh but it didn’t matter, if anything, Salem having control over this monster horse was a comforting thought. And whatever the real reason; the grimm was doing as Salem commanded and it was friendly to Cinder. If Kiara did nothing to provoke it and it remained content in the company of it’s kin, perhaps all would be well.   

With a sideways grimace in Cinder’s general direction, she did as prompted and stepped up to the grimm’s side. She was so tired, that just the thought of having a place to sit helped ease the deep apprehension strung through the very core of her, though part of her mind still couldn’t quite believe that this grimm wouldn’t just take off with her the moment she was on it, spirit her out into the strange, swampy jungle and throw her off and rip her to shreds. Kiara imagined shrinking away inside, imagined her soul itself becoming smaller, and tried to diminish her very existence if such a thing were possible. Like I’m not even here. Just focus on your friends. 

Carefully, cautiously, she reached her cane over the beast’s back to rest its tip on the ground on the far side of the creature. It was so awful, to be so near the thing. Gripping her cane firmly, she pressed down, transferring her weight to the wood, and closing her eyes, she slowly let all her breath seep from her lungs, trying not to shudder. Be small. Be nothing. Quickly, she sucked in a new, fortifying breath, and slung her prosthetic over the grimm’s back, bringing herself to straddle it. The moment she made contact with the it's back, she flinched. It was hot. Why was it hot?  The initial shock that shot through her promised that it would burn her it was so warm, but it wasn’t quite a dangerous temperature, and her body adjusted to it in a matter of seconds. 

No sooner had she laid her cane across the creature’s withers then it’s front half lurched upwards, and she was forced to grab a fistful of it’s mane and clamp her legs around it’s girth to keep her seat, but once standing, it held mercifully still. It’s mane felt as awful as it looked – like seaweed coated in algae; the bright green stuff that clung and stretched and webbed, or maybe like angel hair pasta coated in oil. It was disgusting, and Kiara let go of it as soon as she felt stable. But when her hand came away, there was no residue left behind, in fact, it’s whole hide felt oddly slippery like that, but there was no stain, no gunk that came off it. 

Hot, slimy and unearthly, everything about grimm was horrid and Kiara wished she could stop feeling sensation altogether, stop experiencing any of this. It was surreal and awful, and she just wanted to crawl away somewhere and go to sleep. Nobody rode grimm. She could easily believe all this had just been a nightmare when she woke. But she was here by her own doing and however nightmarish her reality was at the moment it was real, and she was just going to have to suck it up and deal with it.  Somehow. At least she didn’t have to walk anymore. She just needed to pretend it was a real horse. From up on it’s back, she couldn’t really see any of the features that made it obviously grimm, other than the unnatural blackness, so if she just set her eyes between it’s ears, maybe . . .  

It was then that Kiara belatedly noticed she’d dropped her cane when the grimm stood.  

“Ah . . .” She looked down at it forlornly. It lay right beside Cinder’s feet, but she hesitated to ask for anymore favors from the girl, even one so simple as picking up a piece of wood off the ground. But she certainly couldn’t reach it now, nor could she dismount to retrieve it. She extended her pincer slightly and flexed it open, meeting Cinder’s gaze warily.  She opened her mouth slightly to speak, then reordered her thoughts and shut it, withdrawing her prosthetic and resting it on her thigh instead, beginning again.   

“I would be happy to carry that of course, if you could perhaps hand it to me Cinder, but really, if you wouldn’t mind . . . it’s probably best if you hang onto it while I’m on . . . this.”  

She looked down at the shiny back withers beneath her and forced down the revulsion like swallowing bile. No, it’s just an ordinary horse. Just. Ordinary. Horse.   

Her glance flicked back to Cinder. She didn’t want Cinder to have her cane, didn’t like the thought of it in her hands one bit, but if Kiara held it, she was at risk of dropping it again and, well. Maybe it would amuse Cinder to have it. In fact, Kiara hoped it would amuse her, because she greatly suspected that keeping Cinder amused was best for everyone's health. 

She did not understand. She did not–

Cinder gazed languidly back at her, a shimmer of amusement in those golden eyes, the brewing rage vanished like mist burned away by the sun, and Salem pressed her lips together. She didn’t understand.

The question almost didn’t register, distant, echoing. She made no attempt to answer aloud, only made a vague gesture while the tongie stamped thrice and then folded herself politely to the ground—head tilted and neck outstretched to remain within Cinder’s reach. Kiara would get the idea, or perhaps she wouldn’t and Cinder would take the initiative; Salem didn’t much care.

She did not think Cinder had chosen to hide her anger; for all her skill in controlling her expression, Cinder never was very good at concealing her emotions, and Salem felt quite certain that much fury couldn’t be contained. It was simply gone, for reasons she could not even begin to guess.

Of course, there was the obvious pleasure Cinder took in Kiara’s discomfort—and her perennial fascination with the grimm—but neither seemed to Salem to be sufficient to explain… this.

So she stared, unblinking, and Cinder held her gaze with the supreme confidence of a woman who had grasped that she wasn’t going to suffer any punishment after all; perhaps that had something to do with it, although Salem didn’t know what she had done, exactly, to persuade Cinder to… trust, if one could call it that. She did feel unpleasantly, suddenly aware that even now, she didn’t know what Cinder wanted from her.

Not the maidens: Cinder hadn’t so much as mentioned any of them since that aborted conversation the night of Atlas’ fall, and she had come here instead of pursuing the winter maiden to Vacuo. Not freedom—not in the way Salem had believed, after Atlas—or else she wouldn’t have summoned Salem with the apparent purpose of… returning to the fold.

She could not possibly want to return to the fold for its own sake. Salem had nothing to offer her except power that Cinder valued less than freedom, and she’d given Cinder nothing but cruelty over the years.

She didn’t understand.

Cinder blinked at last, turning toward Kiara with a vicious little smirk to drawl, “Well, go on.”
