Heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended the Lobotomy Room cinema club presentation of exploitation gem Beat Girl (1960) at Fontaine’s on 15 August! In my eyes, you are ALL espresso-drinkin’, finger-snappin’ beatniks and maladjusted juvenile delinquents! It was thrilling to see everyone completely entranced by the lunacy of this riotously enjoyable glimpse into London’s teenage jukebox jungle! And yes, Beat Girl IS the single greatest British rock’n’roll movie ever made. There! I said it! Who could resist: the ludicrous ersatz teenage “hepcat” dialogue (“straight from the fridge, dad!”) conjured from the imagination of some middle-aged scriptwriter? John Barry’s awesome, evocative pre-James Bond soundtrack? (Find it on Spotify). The impossibly sullen and electrifying performance of sex kitten starlet Gillian Hills (a sort of British Brigitte Bardot / Tuesday Weld hybrid) as bad girl anti-heroine Jennifer? (Jennifer is SO nihilistic and alienated she needs intensive therapy! In the drag racing and playing “chicken” on the train tracks scenes, she clearly doesn’t care whether she lives or dies!). The presence of British acting legends like Christopher Lee (as sleazeball burlesque club owner Kenny) and Oliver Reed (heartbreakingly young and cute, billed only as “plaid shirt”)? Special credit to Delphi Lawrence as haughty stripper Greta (nicknamed “the duchess” because “when she peels, she acts like she’s doing you a favour”). I love how Greta is perennially bitter and tipsy, wearing the same strapless dress and raging about Kenny (“He’s a bastard, but I love him!”). And remember: Beat Girl was rated “X” upon release. The version we watched contains the burlesque sequence with outrageously sexy Haitian exotic dancer Pascaline, which is often deleted in different markets (a friend of mine in the US recently watched Beat Girl and he didn’t see Pascaline!). All these decades later, Pascaline’s scorching number still feels raunchy. Keep your eyes peeled – I’ll announce the September selection soon! Pictured: a close-up of Jennifer’s winged eyeliner technique.

Mélusine, "l’ondoyante serpentiforme"
Tumblr media
Trawling through my archive from a now declining social media site, I came across a picture I had posted of a 'face' which had appeared in my coffee that morning, on 29 January 2018. This pattern, resembling the face of a woman with swirling hair, manifested after a period of intensive reading around the image of Mélusine, "l’ondoyante serpentiforme", as Pascaline Mourier-Casile names her in her book, André Breton : explorateur de la mère-moire (1986). Only the day before, I had staged a photograph - with two globular flint geodes found in a north Hampshire field - of a book celebrating André Breton's extended prose poem, Arcane 17, named after the 17th card - The Star - in the Tarot's Major Arcana. As Alex Woodcock writes:
The Star symbolised hope and renewal. By associating this card with the medieval figure of the faery-siren Mélusine, Breton found an image through which he could channel his thoughts about everything from alchemy and politics to the future of humanity' (from Melusine As Alchemical Siren In André Breton’s Arcane 17 (1945), in Shima, Volume 12, No.2, September 2018 - link here).
Tumblr media
The same day, 28 January, I had re-posted the image of a picture by Pascaline Mourier-Casile called Métamorphose: L'Oeuf de Meduse, revealing another aspect of uncanny aquatic women, with serpentine hair swirling similarly to what I perceived in my coffee.
Tumblr media
Indeed, all this followed a visit with the author of the Melusine piece quoted above to Linkenholt church, just a couple of days before to admire the fossil sea urchins or echinoids, arranged around a nineteenth-century window. In folklore, these fossils are known variously as shepherd's crowns and fairy loaves. It was on the same trip that I found the flint geodes.
Tumblr media
Although I perceived what I saw as part of a pattern at the time, it is only in hindsight - seeing now the 'time signatures' of this constellation of objects, events and images falling within a short period - that a fuller appreciation has emerged of their possible significance. As Walter Benjamin said,
A philosophy that does not include the possibility of soothsaying from coffee grounds ... cannot be a true philosophy

"The first time I met him was in America in 1979 and when we went backstage when he saw me, he said, "Gosh you're ugly.'" She was in the States with her father and went to see Marley perform in Los Angeles. She had managed to secure a backstage pass to meet the musician who was unfortunately not impressed with her.

"The affair wasn't hidden, but it wasn't public either," says Jamaican guitarist Junior Marvin, who accompanied Marley in The Wailers.
Bongo suggested that the singer perform in Libreville in early 1980.
Marley and the Wailers were ecstatic. For years they had been singing about pan-Africanism, declaring their love for their ancestors' continent, calling for unity - the cover of their album Survival, which was released in October 1979, was a patchwork of the continent's flags - but paradoxically, none of these Jamaicans from the slums of Kingston had ever set foot in Africa.
After being invited to play in Gabon, the Wailers did not stop to ask themselves any questions. Even when they learned that they would be performing during the birthday celebrations of Omar Bongo - who they weren't sure whether he was the "king" or president, and didn't care - they still didn't ask any questions.

Marley was Bongo's first great love. It was not the case for Marley, however, loving an "African princess" gave him a better understanding of a continent he had long sung about but hadn't really known.
