Doublecanons for Riddle era:

Cygnus Black

The saving grace of the Black family.

Cygnus was the fail safe for his parents and became heir presumptive when Alphard made it clear he wouldn’t be producing any heirs to continue the bloodline.

As a child he was his mother’s little angel.

A blessing to the family, something that brought security to the bloodline in case something prevents Alphard from fulfilling his duties to the House.

Cygnus’s birth brought Irma so much pride because it showed she was capable of providing not one heir but two.

He never got involved with the Knights at school.

Nor did he interact much with Tom Riddle.

For Cygnus, Riddle was an insidious presence that he evaded at all costs.

No good would come from Cygnus associating himself with Tom Riddle and he knew this.

The Knights of Walpurgis were a cult, a group of fanatics, not a band of elite wizards ready to take on muggles and muggleborns by storm.

They abused the power they were given by birthright in the servitude of a half-blood who was using them for his own gain.

Cygnus would not allow himself to be taken advantage of.

He would not let the filthy half-blood taint his family name.

He would not allow bend down on one knee, kissing the boot of someone who ranked lover than him in terms of blood purity and social class.

He wasn’t the golden child, he wasn’t his father’s pride like Walburga, or the heir and therefore the most valued like Alphard.

Cygnus was the extra.

Alphard was needed to ensure the continuation of the Black family, Walburga was Pollux’s favorite, and Cygnus was… well he didn’t have much purpose unless something happened to his brother.

He was close with his elder cousin Lucretia growing up.

She was almost like an older sister to Cygnus, but that’s not to say that he and his actual sister didn’t have a relationship of their own.

Walburga was always looking out for Cygnus, after all he was her baby brother.

She cared about him in her own way…

Wally was more of a tough love sort of gal.

I would say Walburga was like a second mother to Cygnus, as most elder sisters are.

As for his relationship with Alphard, well I wouldn’t say that they weren’t close, but I’d definitely consider their dynamic a little complicated.

Alphard was the heir and Cygnus was the spare.

Their positions in the family didn’t personally define their relationship.

It was just that their were often kept at a distance because of Alphard’s duties to the family.

He had to set an example for Cygnus and it was very hard to separate duty and family from each other because there wasn’t really much of a difference in the Black household.

That’s just how it was. It was easier for Cygnus to have a relationship with his sister than it was to have one with his brother because Walburga didn’t have to do much other than to marry pure.

His mother wasn’t very happy with the idea of her son not marrying a Black.

Cygnus was supposed to have a match arranged between him and his cousin Araminta Melifula Black.

But obviously Cygnus had other plans once he first laid eyes on Druella.

Wally was the one who defended him so that her brother could choose the bride he wanted.

“What does it matter anyway?” She would say to Irma. “His children will still be Blacks. You were born outside of this family, weren’t you? And yet we, your children, are still of this House.”

Irma would give in. Walburga was right.

And besides, the match was perfect.

Ella was from a prominent and influential Pure-blood family.

With the Rosier’s association with Grindelwald there would be no question that she shared in their purist beliefs.

Druella was close friends with Tasoula Shafiq so I could imagine double dates between Ella and Cygnus + Tasja Radolphus.

Especially once the field trips to Hogsmeade start up.

Cygnus and Radolphus would be buying both Tasja Ella sweets and Honeydukes, and the girls would be dragging the boys along with them into all different shops.

Cygnus and Radolphus would be trailing behind their girlfriends, carrying by their hauls of goods while Ella and Tasja are just walking hand-in-hand through Hogsmeade as if they were the ones dating.

Snowball fights and sledding races have most definitely happened between the four of them.

I could see the teams being decided in accordance to who was with who.

So Ella with Cygnus and Rudolph with Tasja.

But in the end I could imagine Ella and Tasja completely disregarding the rules of the game and just team up with each other.

They would turn on their boyfriends so that it was more so like boys against girls.

This probably had frustrated both Cygnus and Radolphus a few times when their girlfriends do end up switching the teams.

But they grow hard to it and even start to team up together sometimes just to give Ella and Tasoula a taste of their own medicine.

This tradition would carry well into their adulthood when they had children of their own.

I could see the Blacks and the Lestranges taking their children out to Hogsmeade.

Bellatrix and Rodolphus would be ruthless when it came to snowball fights.

Rabastan was a sensitive little thing growing up. He’d struggle to even throw a snowball at someone from the thought of accidentally hurting anyone.

Especially Andromeda (who he was secretly crushing on).

Cygnus would be carrying little Narcissa around since she was too young to play.

Maybe he’d build little snowmen with her.

Rudolph would be getting attacked with snowballs by his Rodolphus and Bella.

They would show no mercy…

Tasoula would notice that Rabastan was feeling a little out of place since he wasn’t playing the way his brother wanted him to play.

So she’d teach him how to make snow angels with Ella and Andy.

I like to think about the interactions made between Cygnus and the Lestrange children.

He was like an uncle to the three of them.

Between him and Radolphus, they would be carrying the babies Cissy and Renissa.

Sometimes Cygnus would switch with Radolphus so that he could carry Renissa and Radolphus could carry Cissy.

Renissa loved to be carried by ‘Uncle Cygnus’.

Just like her father, Cygnus would spoil Renissa rotten.

He’d buy her anything she wanted from the stores at Hogsmeade: her favorite sweets, new plushies that she saw on display in the windows…

She had him wrapped around her finger, as if she too were one of his daughters.

They all made up one big family, which is why none of the parents were opposed to the idea of Rodolphus and Bellatrix becoming betrothed when it came time for them to graduate.

Let’s just say Tasoula and Druella were ecstatic.

And Cygnus, well, he just wanted his little girl to be happy.

But he was comforted by the fact that it was indeed Tasoula and Radolphus’s son that was to marry his daughter.

Cygnus wasn’t at all hesitant to give Rodolphus his blessing.

One engaged soon-to-be-married daughter down, two to go.

Andy was going to be arranged to marry Rabastan, but this was something that Andromeda herself was still unsure of.

When Andromeda ran away to be with Ted, Cygnus was distraught.

He didn’t want to disown his daughter, but at Walburga’s insistence, as well as the added stress from the weight of his family’s expectations of him, he had no choice.

He locked himself in his office for days.

All he could think about was how broken his family was now, overwhelming himself with his past memories of Andromeda.

She was his little girl, he was supposed to protect her, and he failed to do that as her father.

Now she was running off somewhere with a muggleborn who Cygnus viewed as a threat to his daughter’s safety.

He didn’t care about blood purity, he didn’t care about continuing his line…

All he cared about were his daughters and the fact that one wasn’t tucked away, safe at home anymore.

What hurt him even more was that Andromeda had left of her own accord and that he’d never get to see her again.

As of that day she was dead to the family.

Cygnus lived with a void in his heart for the rest of his days.

One day, a few years after this tragedy, Cygnus had gotten word regarding the birth of his first grandchild who Andromeda had by that muggleborn swine.

But he could feel no joy, no pride, nothing at all. He had already accepted the fact that his Andromeda was gone.

Tasoula Shafiq

Tasoula was born as the first daughter of Aykut Shafiq and Letitia Greengrass in 1927.

Her name means “resurrection” and is a diminutive form of the name Anastasia.

Tasoula’s nickname is ‘Tasja’, which bears the same meaning as her given name.

She was born with the blood malediction of her mother’s family which caused her severe Fibromyalgia.

Tasja was one of five children; she has three older brothers and one younger brother, who was a year younger than she was.

Tasoula was betrothed to Radolphus Lestrange when she was seven.

Ever since then she and her parents would make frequent visits to Lestrange manor.

She would always be a subject to Madame Lestrange’s scrutiny, especially as she got older.

I could see Madame Lestrange circling around a sixteen-year-old Tasoula in the receiving room of Lestrange manor, almost predatorily as she examined her.

I believe in this moment the Madame would say something along the lines of: “I suppose the girl does seem to posses quite pleasant facial features, and… child bearing hips, which is necessary if she plans to carry the next heir.”

Despite being a victim of Madame Lestrange’s harsh criticism, Tasoula was also the carrier of her hopes and aspirations for the future of the Lestrange family.

Tasoula carried herself well, a perfect pure-blood witch with both elegance and grace, which was appreciated by Madame Lestrange.

Madame Lestrange saw something in Tasoula that reminded her of herself a bit.

She was young and naive, a vulnerable sheep thrown to a pack of bloodthirsty, merciless wolves.

Tasoula was being introduced to a new world… a cold, cruel, vicious world where the weak didn’t survive.

She was now part of the system which she was unfamiliar with, and she would have to play by the rules if she wanted to remain in the family.

Tasja was a breath of fresh air to the family, which was both refreshing and threatening.

It was Madame Lestrange’s job to teach her how things worked in House Lestrange and Tasoula would need to conform to their expectations if she wanted to become Radolphus’s bride.

And so Madame Lestrange took Tasoula under her wing.

Even when she was at Hogwarts, Tasoula would join the Madame every Sunday for tea at Lestrange manor.

They became close after a while, their relationship developing into one a mother and daughter would have.

Tasoula was close friends with Walburga Black, Eileen Prince, Euphemia Fawley, Cassandra Selwyn, and Druella Rosier.

She and Druella were the closest out of the six. They were each other’s ride or die and their friendship remained constant throughout their lives.

Tasja was not afraid of Tom Riddle. She was the only one who could look him in the eye and not feel a shiver of trepidation running down her spine.

She was the only one who did not experience the feeling of sheer dread overwhelming her when he entered the room.

Tasoula didn’t hate muggleborns, nor did she think that muggles should be oppressed by the wizarding government.

Tasoula harbored affections for Étienne Rosier.

She’d often visit Rosier manor for Christmas in order to see Ella.

There was probably an incident at some point where Tasoula has accidentally spilled a glass of New Year’s champagne on her dress and had to change clothes.

So Druella took Tasoula up to her room and lended her some lounge wear which just so happened to be a hand-me-down from Étienne.

Like some oversized dress shirt or something.

And so that night when the girls were getting ready for bed Étienne would catch Tasoula wearing his clothes and say something like, “is that my shirt?”

Tasja’s face would be flushed red from sheer embarrassment and she’d just stutter out an incomprehensible sentence that was originally intended to be used as an excuse if it could even be understood.

“I-, no… yes— I mean no, Ella let me… she…”

Étienne would just laugh and shake his head, flashing her a wink before heading to his bedroom for the night.

Vinda Rosier was the first to notice that her nephew and Tasoula had feelings for each other.

She would be sitting in the morning tea room, spectating from affair as Tasja and Étienne awkwardly interacted with one another.

Vinda could tell by the way Étienne and Tasoula looked at each other that they were in love

She knew that her nephew had fallen madly in love with Tasoula, to the point where it was almost painful for him to love someone that he knew he couldn’t have.

This was because they could not act on these feelings due to Tasoula already having been betrothed to Lestrange.

But in the future, her marriage to Lestrange was a happy one.

She was a doting mother.

By providing the Lestrange bloodline with not one but two sons, she brought security to the family.

Since Radolphus had been the only heir to the English side of House Lestrange as his parents had no other sons.

Tasoula loved her children and was a doting mother.

She was very gentle and attentive towards them.

In spite of it being scandalous at the time for a noblewoman to do so, she breastfed them.

And Tasoula also refused to let a governess raise them.

She was their mother, not some woman that she and her husband paid for.

Tasoula would not schedule meetings for when her children were allowed to come and see her.

They were allowed to go to her whenever they pleased.

There was no such thing as ‘evening tea time’ where that’s the only time the children could truly speak to their mother and father.

No. Tasoula was a pretty hands-on mother.

She was in charge of their early education and would choose the best professors and governesses who came to the manor to teach the kids.

Tasoula would not accept any teacher whose main focus was on blood purity, as many of her friends had done with their children.

She wanted the main focus to be on real education such as history, mathematics, languages, science, literature, etc.

Her children didn’t need someone to teach them about the importance of blood purity and the strain muggle blood has on the magical lines of pure-blood families.

Tasja wouldn’t let a nurse maid bathe them, she’d do it herself.

Just as her mother did when she was a child.

Nor did she let any of her children go to bed without a goodnight kiss, or a bedtime story from both her and Radolphus.

She would make sure that her children knew that they were loved.

When they were babies she’d get up every time to change their diapers, feed them, rock them back to sleep.

Even though Radolphus often told her that they already had a wet nurse and a nurse maid to take care of all that during the night.

In response to this Tasoula would always say: “Well I’m their mother.” Every. Single. Time.

She’d request to eat in a more smaller, more private dining room or breakfast room in the mornings and evenings so that the family could be closer together.

They would serve themselves, no servants were allowed to watch them dine during this time.

It was a private moment between Tasoula and her family and she didn’t want to feel like she was being spectated while she enjoyed time with her husband and children.

At first this was very strange to Radolphus as his parents didn’t even bother eating with him while he was growing up.

Usually he’d just sit and eat with his governess in the main dining room, with its high walls and long table that oftentimes made him feel isolated.

Even when he wasn’t used to what his wife had in store for him and the children, he still found it to be somewhat comforting.

If only Radolphus had this growing up… he was glad his children had a mother like Tasja to give them the childhood they never had.

They would all eat as a family, no one was allowed not to attend family dinner.

If Radolphus was ever busy in his office and planned to eat later in the evening, Tasoula would go to hunt him down.

She intended on eating with her husband and children, not just her children.

It wouldn’t take her that much effort to convince Radolphus to eat with his family.

Rudolph knew he couldn’t defy her. She was too stubborn. And if he wished not to sleep in one of the guest rooms tonight then he better do as she says.

After Rodolphus and Rabastan, Tasoula and Radolphus didn’t plan to have anymore children.

Especially after Rabastan since Tasoula’s pregnancy with him seemed to trigger her blood malediction.

But Tasoula soon realized she wanted another baby.

And who was Radolphus to say no to his wife?

So Tasoula had Renissa and their family couldn’t have been complete without her.

Radolphus was hoping for a girl, he didn’t want another son.

I pin him as somewhat of a closeted girl dad.

He didn’t know that he would ever want a daughter until he got two boys but no girl.

Renissa really did capture her father’s heart the moment she was born.

Tasoula almost died in childbirth and was bedridden for a few weeks after giving birth to Renissa.

The birth had weakened her and caused her great pain because of the malediction.

It was a miracle she survived at all.

After that her health was never the same.

One day she could be fine, and then the next day her health could decline rapidly once more.

But she would push through it for the sake of her children.

Tasoula never let her illness get in the way of the time she would spend with her kids.

Sometimes when it was really bad she would have no choice but to remain in her chambers the entirety of the day, but she would still have them visit her.

The children would play games with their mother, or rehearse little plays or dance shows for her in the bedroom.

Even Radolphus would sometimes watch, or even join in on the entertainment when he wasn’t busy with work.

When Rodolphus went to Hogwarts, Tasoula was there with her husband and two youngest children to escort him to the platform.

I would think Tasja was much like Astoria Greengrass to Scorpius Malfoy.

I could imagine her giving Rodolphus a bag of candies saying, “here, take these, and make sure you share.”

She just wanted her son to make friends.

Even though both Rodolphus and his father would probably remind Tasoula that there was already a trolly filled with sweets on the train.

She didn’t care.

Whenever either of her sons got into trouble at Hogwarts, she’d stick up for them.

“My sons would never do such a thing! They are perfect little angels.”

In spite of knowing deep down that they probably did do something that shouldn’t have…

But she didn’t let them get away with everything.

If it was very serious she would be the one to discipline them, and even encourage the school to punish them with some sort of chore.

Tasoula always wanted her children home for the holidays.

She wasn’t one of those parents who would keep their kids at Hogwarts.

Most of the time, Tasja and Radolphus would throw a Christmas party at their manor for all their friends and family in attendance.

But another tradition was also to visit 12 Grimmauld Place to see Wally and Orion, as well as Ella and Cygnus.

The children would play and the adults would chat amongst themselves.

Usually the husbands would go to have a cigar and a brandy in another room while the wives stayed with the kids and talked.

Wally was probably pregnant with Sirius by Bellatrix’s eighth Christmas.

She was the last one of her friends to start a family so Sirius and Regulus are a little bit younger than most of Druella and Tasoula’s children.

With the exception of Renissa who was born a bit later, perhaps shortly after Regulus.

On Christmas mornings the children would go out to ice skate on the lake.

I could see Tasoula teaching little Cissy to learn how to skate.

When Regulus was old enough to join the older kids he’d probably be afraid that the ice would crack and he would fall in.

But Narcissa would hold his hand and teach him just like Tasoula did with her.

“One foot in front of the other, Reg. That’s what Auntie Tasja told me.”

There would come a day where Tasoula would no longer be able to attend these Christmas parties and the winters within Lestrange would become silent and bleak.

Tasja would pass away during Renissa’s second year at Hogwarts around the late 1970s from illness brought on by the blood malediction.

Radolphus would never be the same man he once was before the death of his beloved wife.

He’d mourn her loss for the rest of his life.

And the children would be distraught, especially Rabastan who was closest with his mother.

If someone were to have hypothetically (this isn't a real story) have written a marauders fanfic set during the regency period in London, and then they want to hypothetically change the names to turn it into an original story to - again, hypothetically - get it printed for their own shelf in book form....

Le magasin de mercerie, obstinément fermé, prenait, dans cette rue mouvementée, une apparence absurde. La poussière s’agglutinait sur les rainures, le bois se couvrait de traces de craie, les chiens venaient y lever la patte, tout se dégradait. Derrière les volets, on imaginait cet espace clos ne servant à rien ni à personne. Pour le règlement de la succession, la famille attendait toujours un conseil sans cesse retardé, chacun guettant les réactions de l’autre. Le mot « tuteur » avait été prononc�� devant l’enfant, évoquant pour lui un rosier ou des rames de haricots. Parfois, une image furtive le visitait : il revoyait la table demi-ronde, le buffet, la desserte, la machine Singer, son lit, les innombrables tiroirs de la boutique. Parmi tous ces trésors, les souris devaient s’en donner à cœur joie. Tout dormait comme dans le palais enchanté de la Belle au Bois Dormant (Robert Sabatier, Les allumettes suédoises, 1969).

Saint-Etienne-du-Bois, Ain.

Mac était venu plusieurs fois à la mercerie. Il se plantait en face de Virginie, lui faisait les doux yeux et lui expliquait qu’elle était trop belle pour rester mercière. Elle l’écoutait avec ironie et lui demandait ce qu’il lui proposait. Il finissait toujours par lui montrer un bouton qu’il avait arraché pour la circonstance. Elle acceptait de le lui recoudre, mais en lui demandant de lui tendre le veston et de rester de l’autre côté du comptoir de vente. Bougras aussi venait parfois à la mercerie, mais seulement pour demander à Virginie d’enfiler « ce sacré fil dans cette putain d’aiguille ». Il en tirait ensuite de grandes longueurs pour pouvoir se livrer à divers travaux avec la même aiguillée. Alphard Black

Alphard was born the eldest son of Pollux and Irma Black, and therefore was the heir apparent to the House of Black.

In his youth he was much like Regulus Black and personality… an obedient son, a soft-spoken, brilliant young man, who shared in his family’s purist ideologies and didn’t question their authority.

Al was everything his parents could’ve wanted for an heir. He was perfect, in every way, the golden child that everyone envied.

Walburga and Alphard were like the 1940s version of Sirius and Regulus.

Walburga was the wild child of the family, causing trouble or drawing too much attention to herself. She had a fiery temperament and a rebellious nature that drove Pollux and Irma up a wall.

And then there was Alphard who was a saint in the eyes of his parents, the son that never did anything wrong. He was the child Pollux and Irma never had to worry about, the only one who could act as a balm to the splitting headaches their daughter caused them.

But like Regulus, Alphard had a part of himself that he had never let surface, a secret that he kept to himself for many years…

He didn’t want to hate muggles.

There may have been a time where Alphard thought muggles threatened the magic integrity and blood purity of the wizarding world, but that was just because that’s what his parents told him to believe. He was taught that the muggles were dirty and that their filth would taint the very essence of the magical world.

But as he got older Al started questioning these beliefs and the fear and hatred his parents had instilled in him, especially once he got to Hogwarts.

There weren’t many muggleborns that attended Hogwarts back in the 1940s, but there was enough to see that they weren’t dangerous in the way that his parents said. In fact, Alphard was fascinated by them, he didn’t look at muggleborns the same way the other pure-blood students did.

He was intrigued by them and his later friendship with Tom Riddle only fanned the flames to his curiosity.

While Alphard taught Tom more about the magical world, Tom begrudgingly told him more about the muggle world.

Riddle wanted to leave his muggle background in the past and strive to be something greater than what he was born, but Alphard admired him for his roots.

Walburga hated how her brother was associating himself with Riddle.

She didn’t need some meddlesome muggleborn getting involved with her family, especially the heir of her family’s bloodline.

Alphard had a reputation he needed to uphold and he wasn’t doing himself any favors by mingling with the likes of Tom Riddle.

He is two years younger than Walburga, and two years older than his little brother Cygnus.

Wally and Al were closest growing up, but that probably changed as they got older and Alphard started straying away from their family’s values.

Even in adulthood there was a lot of tension in their relationship between the three siblings.

The only reason why their relationship still remained intact was because Alphard never did anything bad enough to be disowned from the family up until Sirius ran away.

The motorbike that was passed onto Hagrid by Sirius Black was originally owned by Alphard.

He gave the bike to Sirius shortly after he left home.

Alphard was a metamorphagus, but he wasn’t allowed to embrace this side of himself during his youth as it wasn’t very socially accepted back in the day.

It wasn’t until he was much older that he started to allow his abilities to surface.

Alphard served during WW2 as a soldier in wizarding aid to the muggles.

(From what I’ve read, at least in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the muggle Prime Minister was in kahoots with Fudge so I’d assume it would’ve been the same during the 1940s — Churchill probably requested help from the magical world.)

Sergei Dolohov

Dolohov was a transfer student from Koldovstoretz and enrolled at Hogwarts during his fifth year.

He was expelled from his previous school for endangering a fellow student during the process of perfecting his purple flame incantation.

Riddle heard about Dolohov’s reputation and invited him to join the Knights of Walpurgis, to which he agreed.

Creating your own personal, complex spells was something that only few of Riddle’s Knights could do and so he thought Dolohov would be an asset to him due to his skill in this department.

His name means ‘servant’ which alludes to his position as a Knight of Walpurgis and early Death Eater in service to the Dark Lord.

He was a foreign mystery with a charming Russian accent that fell into the ears of all the female students like an unfamiliar melody that instantly attracted allured them.

Dolohov became popular amongst his peers while at Hogwarts and made connections with a lot of heirs to prominent pure-blood families which proved beneficial to Tom.

Sergei would play Quidditch on an uprooted tree branch, instead of using a broomstick.

This was something they’d do at Koldovstoretz.

The boys would definitely tease Dolohov about this and dare him to uproot the Womping Willow and use it for the next match.

He was handsome, with dark hair as black as charcoal, and piercing blue eyes that were almost as sharp as his jawline. Dolohov’s complexion was fair, but oftentimes his cheeks bore a reddish hue from his overindulgence in drink.

Dolohov was a ladykiller, not a man someone’s mama would want as a potential suitor for their daughter.

Which is probably why a lot of girls at Hogwarts went crazy for him.

He was definitely what someone would deem as being “bad boy” material.

There is no doubt that he’s done things with the ladies at Hogwarts that would’ve tainted their reputation if the Dailey Prophet had ever caught wind of what they’d been up to with a certain Russian transfer student.

Broom closets, empty corridors and classrooms, dormitories, behind a bush in the courtyard, carriages…

They’ve probably even gotten freaky with him down in the dungeons… Sergei’s definitely got a kink for handcuffs and chains.

Let’s just say he’s got quite the reputation in regard to a variety of things, not just spells.

Étienne Rosier

Étienne Rosier was born in France and is the elder brother of Druella Rosier.

Vinda Rosier was the elder sister of Étienne’s father.

Both Vinda and her brother were acolytes of Gellert Grindelwald.

He grew up surrounded by Grindelwald’s followers during house parties or meetings amongst Grindelwald’s followers.

The Rosier family oftentimes hosted these gatherings as they were Grindelwald’s most loyal acolytes.

Similar to how the Lestrange family were Voldemort’s most loyal Death Eaters.

Étienne’s father was arrested after the French Ministry of Magic discovered his connections to Grindelwald.

He was supposed to enroll at Beauxbatons but after his father was released from the Ministry’s custody he and his family moved to England.

Étienne Rosier was in Tom Riddle’s year at Hogwarts.

Although at first Étienne kept his distance, thinking that Tom was just a muggleborn.

In fact I don’t think he paid much attention to Tom in their early years at Hogwarts.

Riddle was irrelevant to Rosier, or at least back then he was.

Étienne was close friends with Radolphus Lestrange.

Instead of inheriting the Rosier family’s blond hair and blue eyes, Étienne had gotten the Rosier recessive traits such as black hair and green eyes.

Much like his aunt Vinda.

Étienne was one of the first boys Tom Riddle recruited in their fifth year at Hogwarts to be one of his Knights of Walpurgis.

By the time Étienne turned ten years old, before he and his family left for England his mother allowed him to attend the dinner meetings for Grindelwald’s followers.

His mother didn’t approve of her son’s involvement with Grindelwald’s cause.

Especially once her husband was arrested.

Eglantine Rosier didn’t want Étienne knowing too much in fear that the French Ministry take advantage of his youth and naivety as a way to pry information from him if they ever raided one of the meetings.

Sometimes they would be disguised as masquerade balls in order to conceal the identities of the acolytes, or just simple dinner parties at Rosier manor, to veil the true purposes of these gatherings.

Druella wasn’t allowed to go because she was too young so there would be times when she’d ask her brother about what happened.

He would never tell though, which you could imagine annoyed the hell out of Ella.

Étienne wasn’t always allowed to go to these parties. Like his sister, he would be sent to bed early by their mother whenever these gatherings occurred.

But of course he and his sister never listened.

They would stay up late and sneak out of their rooms the moment the visitors started to arrive.

Étienne and Druella would sit by the staircase and attempt to eavesdrop of conversations being held by their parents Grindelwald’s followers.

But now that he was old enough to attend them, he thought he was much more mature than Druella.

Superior, even.

His peers at Hogwarts would make fun of his French accent.

But most of them were just harmless jabs from Lestrange.

Other than that Étienne was well-respected… and feared.

Étienne and Druella would often speak French with one another as a way to bond.

They both missed their birth country.

But they knew that they wouldn’t be able to go back for some time.

At least not until Grindelwald was defeated once and for all.

Almost everyone at school knew about the Rosiers association with Grindelwald.

He could hear their whispers in the halls whenever he passed, or their eyes boring into him from where he sat at his desk.

Étienne didn’t mind this. After a while, he had mostly grown used to it.

But by his third year a new pair of eyes began to drill into the back of his head, causing an unfamiliar sensation of trepidation and unease inside of him.

When Rosier would turn his gaze to see who was looking at him, he was surprised to see a young Tom Riddle sitting behind him.

Watching, studying, inspecting…

Étienne resisted the urge to scrunch his nose in disgust at the right of Riddle daring to even look in his direction.

But then he noticed something different about Tom’s gaze that sent a shiver down his spine.

Riddle’s eyes stared at him intensely as if he were already planning on how Rosier would serve him.

Il faut ajouter à ce bilan des centaines de blessés, ainsi que des dizaines d’autres attaques, non mortelles.

C’est une liste longue et macabre. Depuis l’attentat de la rue des rosiers à Paris, le 9 août 1982, jusqu’à celui de la préfecture de police de Paris, le 3 octobre 2019, 294 personnes ont été tuées lors de 26 attaques islamistes. Impossible, bien sûr, de ne pas se souvenir des plus meurtrières (Mohammed Merah, Charlie Hebdo, le «13 novembre» ou Nice) ou des plus marquantes (l’égorgement du père Hamel ou l’assassinat de deux policiers à Magnanville).

Mais, au-delà, au rythme des dizaines d’attaques, souvent non mortelles, la mémoire est trouble: difficile de se souvenir spontanément du nombre, du lieu, de la récurrence ou de la gravité des attaques.

Voici la liste non exhaustive de ces attentats islamistes, dans la mesure où elle ne retient que ceux dont l’issue a été mortelle. Première constatation, ces attaques n’ont pas commencé au début du 21e siècle dans le sillage d’Al-Qaïda puis de l’État islamique, mais longtemps avant, avec dans les années 1980 celles liées au conflit israélo-arabe et à la guerre Iran-Irak puis dans les années 1990 celles liés à la guerre civile algérienne. Ce terrorisme islamiste d’avant Merah a fait 29 morts lors de huit attaques. Depuis 2012, les 18 attaques mortelles - pour la plupart revendiquées par l’État islamique - ont fait 263 morts, dont 217 lors des deux plus sanglants attentats - celui du 13 novembre 2015 à Paris et celui du 14 juillet 2016 à Nice.

● 9 août 1982: l’attentat de la rue des Rosiers à Paris (6 morts)

De nombreuses ombres entourent encore cet attentat sanglant. Le 9 août 1982, un commando de deux à cinq personnes masquées fait irruption, grenades et pistolets-mitrailleurs à la main, dans le restaurant juif de Jo Goldenberg. Six personnes sont tuées, vingt-deux blessés dans cet attentat qui aurait été commis par le «groupe Abou Nidal», mouvement dissident de l’Organisation de libération de la Palestine.

● 20 mars 1986: bombe sur les Champs Élysées (2 morts)

C’est le premier attentat mortel du «comité de solidarité avec les prisonniers politiques arabes et du Proche-Orient» lié au Hezbollah libanais, qui veut punir la France pour soutenir Bagdad dans le conflit qui oppose depuis 1980 l’Irak et l’Iran. Un engin explosif tue deux personnes et en blesse vingt-neuf dans la galerie «Point Show» sur les Champs-Élysées à Paris.

● 8 septembre 1986: bureau de poste de l’hôtel de ville de Paris (1 mort)

Une nouvelle bombe fait un mort et vingt blessés à la préfecture de police de Paris le 8 septembre de la même année. C’est le début de la période appelée «septembre noir». Jacques Chirac, alors premier ministre, déclare: «C’est la guerre».

● 14 septembre 1986: le pub Renault, encore les Champs Élysées (1 mort)

Les Champs Élysées sont de nouveau touchés. Alors que 300 personnes se trouvent au pub Renault, deux policiers et un employé de l’établissement parviennent à descendre la bombe dans le parking. Bilan: un mort et deux blessés.

● 15 septembre 1986: déjà la préfecture de police de Paris (1 mort)

Un terroriste parvient à dissimuler une bombe sous son imperméable. Elle explose dans le bureau des permis de conduire de la préfecture de police de Paris. Une personne est tuée, cinquante sont blessés.

● 17 septembre 1986: devant chez Tati (7 morts)

Rue de Rennes à Paris, devant le magasin Tati et en face des locaux du journal Le Point , une bombe explose, tuant sept personnes et en blessant cinquante-deux. C’est l’attentat le plus meurtrier jusqu’en 1995.

● 24 décembre 1994: prise d’otages du vol 8969 Alger-Paris (3 morts)

C’est cette fois-ci dans le contexte de la guerre civile algérienne qu’a lieu un nouvel attentat la veille de Noël 1994. Les passagers et l’équipage du vol 8969 d’Air France qui devait relier Alger à Paris sont pris en otage par des terroristes du Groupe islamique armé (GIA). L’avion stationne deux jours dans la capitale algérienne puis décolle vers la capitale française, mais, pour se ravitailler en carburant, s’arrête à Marseille, où le GIGN donne l’assaut. Trois otages avaient précédemment été tués, seize personnes ont été blessées au cours de l’opération anti-terroriste. Les quatre terroristes, qui ont été abattus, comptaient faire exploser l’avion sur la tour Montparnasse ou la tour Eiffel, préfiguration des attentats du 11 septembre.

● 25 juillet 1995: attentat à la gare Saint-Michel (8 morts)

En 1995, le GIA va commettre huit attentats sur le sol français. Le seul mortel, encore plus meurtrier que celui de la rue de Rennes en 1986, a lieu le 25 juillet dans le RER C à la gare Saint-Michel. Une bombonne de gaz remplie d’écrous explose, tuant huit personnes et en blessant 117.

● Du 11 au 19 mars 2012: les trois attaques de Mohammed Merah (7 morts)

Une longue période de près de vingt ans a lieu sans attentat islamiste mortel en France. En mars 2012, moins de trois mois avant l’élection présidentielle, un djihadiste, Mohammed Merah, sème la mort dans le Sud-Ouest. Le 11 mars, il tue un militaire français à Toulouse, puis deux autres à Montauban le 13 mars. Le 19 mars, il commet une tuerie à l’école juive Ozar Hatorah de Toulouse, où quatre personnes trouvent la mort, dont trois enfants. Le 22 mars, Mohammed Merah est abattu par le RAID.

● 7 janvier 2015: attentat contre Charlie Hebdo (12 morts)

Le 7 janvier 2015, entrant dans les locaux du journal satirique Charlie Hebdo , deux djihadistes, les frères Kouachi, assassinent onze personnes (dont huit collaborateurs du journal) et en blessent onze autres. Dans leur fuite, ils tuent un policier déjà blessé. Ils sont finalement éliminés par le GIGN dans une imprimerie de Dammartin-en-Goële (Seine-et-Marne). L’attentat est revendiqué par Al-Qaïda dans la péninsule arabique (AQPA).

● 8 janvier 2015: Assassinat d’une policière à Montrouge (1 mort)

Un jour plus tard, Amedy Coulibaly, proche des frères Kouachi, mais qui a lui prêté allégeance à l’État islamique, tue par balle une policière et blesse une autre personne à Montrouge.

● 9 janvier 2015: prise d’otages Hyper Cacher (4 morts)

Le lendemain, Amedy Coulibaly prend en otage les clients et le personnel d’une supérette cacher à la porte de Vincennes et tue quatre personnes. Il est abattu lors d’un assaut du RAID et de la BRI. Ces trois attaques en quelques jours étaient coordonnées.

● 19 avril 2015: l’affaire Sid Ahmed Ghlam (1 mort)

Étudiant algérien en France, Sid Ahmed Ghlam préparait des attentats, notamment contre une église de Villejuif. Dans le cadre de la préparation de ces attaques, il vole la voiture d’Aurélie Châtelain, mère de famille de 32 ans, qu’il tue d’une balle en plein cœur. Il est arrêté le même jour.

● 26 juin 2015: l’attaque de Saint-Quentin-Fallavier (1 mort)

À Saint-Quentin-Fallavier (Isère), le 26 juin 2015, Seifi Ghasemi commet un attentat sur le site d’une usine de production de gaz industriels et médicaux classée «Seveso» et appartenant à la société américaine Air Products. Deux employés sont blessés lors de l’explosion. Avant l’attaque proprement dite, le djihadiste a égorgé son employeur, Hervé Cornara. C’est la première décapitation dans le cadre d’un attentat sur le sol français.

● 13 novembre 2015: sept attaques meurtrières à Paris et à Saint-Denis (131 morts)

Il s’agit de l’attentat - en réalité une série de plusieurs attaques - le plus meurtrier commis en France depuis la Seconde guerre mondiale. Le 13 novembre 2015, des fusillades et des attaques-suicides islamistes font 131 morts et 413 blessés aux abords du Stade de France, au Bataclan et sur plusieurs terrasses de bars des 10e et 11e arrondissements. Elles sont revendiquées par l’État islamique. Parmi les neuf terroristes, le seul survivant est Salah Abdeslam, capturé par la police belge dans la commune bruxelloise de Molenbeek le 18 mars 2016.

● 13 juin 2016: le double meurtre de Magnanville (2 morts)

Un commandant de police, Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, et sa compagne Jessica Schneider, fonctionnaire du ministère de l’intérieur, Jessica Schneider, sont assassinés devant leur domicile à Magnanville par Larossi Abballa. L’attentat est revendiqué par l’organisation État islamique.

● 14 juillet 2016: l’attentat de Nice (86 morts)

Nouvelle attaque meurtrière, cette fois-ci le jour de la fête nationale. Au volant d’un camion, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, tunisien, fonce dans la foule réunie sur la Promenade des Anglais pour un feu d’artifice. 86 personnes sont tuées, 458 blessées. L’État islamique revendique l’attaque.

● 26 juillet 2016: le père Hamel égorgé à Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray (1 mort)

Lors d’une messe, le 26 juillet 2016, deux djihadistes mènent une prise d’otages dans l’église de Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, près de Rouen. Le père Jacques Hamel, qui célébrait la messe, est égorgé, un fidèle blessé. L’État islamique revendique l’attaque.

● 20 avril 2017: fusillade sur les Champs-Élysées (1 mort)

Armé d’une Kalachnikov, Karim Cheurfi tire sur un véhicule de police, tuant son conducteur, Xavier Jugelé, blessant deux autres agents, ainsi qu’une passante. L’État islamique a revendiqué l’attaque.

● 1er octobre 2017: deux jeunes femmes égorgées gare Saint-Charles (2 morts)

Nouveau cas d’égorgement après ceux d’Hervé Cornara et du père Hamel. Criant «Allah Akbar», Ahmed Hanachi, un Tunisien en situation irrégulière, égorge deux jeunes femmes de 20 et 21 ans gare Saint-Charles à Marseille avant d’être abattu par des militaires de l’opération Sentinelle. L’attaque est revendiquée par l’État islamique.

● 23 mars 2018: attaques et prise d’otages de Trèbes et Carcassonne (4 morts)

À Carcassonne, le 23 mars 2018, le Franco-Marocain Radouane Lakdim vole une voiture, tuant l’un des occupants et blessant le conducteur. Il tire ensuite à six reprises sur des CRS terminant leur footing, l’un d’eux est grièvement blessé. Il se rend ensuite à Trèbes et entre dans le Super U, où il tue à bout portant le chef boucher, puis un client. Radouane Lakdim prend en otage une hôtesse de caisse. Alors que les gendarmes sont arrivés sur place, le plus haut gradé, le lieutenant-colonel Arnaud Beltrame, s’échange contre celle-ci. L’officier de gendarmerie est grièvement blessé avant l’intervention du GIGN. Il meurt des suites de ses blessures et reçoit un hommage national aux Invalides. L’attaque est revendiquée par l’État islamique.

● 12 mai 2018: attaque à l’arme blanche à Paris (1 mort)

Vers 21 heures, au cri de «Allah Akbar» et armé d’un couteau, le Franco-Russe Khamzat Azimov, originaire de Tchétchénie, tue un passant et en blesse quatre autres, rue Monsigny dans le 2e arrondissement, avant d’être abattu par un policier. L’État islamique revendique l’attaque.

● 11 décembre 2018: attaque du marché de Noël de Strasbourg (5 morts)

Le 11 décembre 2018, armé d’un revolver et d’un couteau, un Franco-Algérien de 29 ans, Chérif Chekatt, pénètre dans le marché de Noël de Strasbourg, où il tue cinq personnes et en blesse onze autres. Il est abattu par les forces de l’ordre après une traque de 48 heures. L’attaque est revendiquée par l’État islamique.

● 3 octobre 2019: attaque de la préfecture de police de Paris (4 morts)

Le 3 octobre 2019, armé d’un couteau, un informaticien travaillant au sein des renseignements de la préfecture de police de Paris tue quatre de ses collègues, avant d’être abattu. Sa radicalisation islamiste n’a pas été détectée préalablement par les services de police.

De nombreuses attaques non mortelles

De nombreuses autres attaques terroristes ont été commises ces dernières années, mais n’ont pas été mortelles. Onze fois depuis 2012, des militaires ou des policiers ont été attaqués par des individus radicalisés. Lors de ces onze attentats, aucun de ces représentants des forces de l’ordre ou des forces armées n’a été tué, mais plusieurs ont été blessés, à l’image de l’attaque à la voiture bélier du 9 août 2017 au cours de laquelle six militaires ont été touchés. D’autres attentats ont été déjoués, mais auraient pu avoir des conséquences funestes comme l’attaque du train Thalys le 21 août 2015: il y a eu «seulement» trois blessés grâce à l’intervention de plus passagers, dont deux militaires américains, qui parviennent à maîtriser le djihadiste marocain Ayoub El Khazzani, armé d’une Kalachnikov et membre de la cellule terroriste qui a organisé les attentats du 13 novembre en France. Plus récemment, le 24 mai 2019, un djihadiste algérien, Mohamed Hichem Medjoub, qui a prêté allégeance à l’État islamique, fait exploser une bombe rue Victor-Hugo à Lyon, blessant 14 personnes.
