Agatha All Along deep dive: episode 9 part 2
(AAA entries: ep1 [1][2][3][4] ep2 [1][2][3][4] ep3 [1][2][3] ep4 [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][+1] ep5 [1][2][3][4][5] ep6 [1][2][3] ep7 [1][2][3][4][5][6] ep8 [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] ep9 [1][2])
I'm glad nicky came up with a cool new tune because according to period movies and shows greensleeves is the only song anyone ever knew
look at that meek little smile, ughhhh. nicky is like two days old and this asshole has already figured out he's the perfect prop for her murder sprees. and these poor women are calling her sister and are willing to help too.
the spell is te accipimus in circulum, we accept you in the circle, and yes that makes me cry a little. we accept you in our community. and the spell is yellow air magic, which sounds like the most empathic kind if Lilia is any indication.
that's interesting, you can't really tell that well from screencaps but go rewatch the scene, this witch is making mushrooms grow with yellow magic instead of green?? is it just a spell (she is holding a book) or have I been getting it all wrong and color has nothing to do with the type of magic one has?
or maybe??? the color depends on the coven you're in?? the salemites all had blue magic for example. and now that I think about it the stone circle is a protection spell but it's not red/orange.
the meaning of this scene is so glaring dear lord. agatha was never going to give these women a chance to prove that yes, there are people out there who could love and help and accept her. she has shut herself up to that possibility a long time ago.
and she stole the soup too. awful.
I've seen all the different theories about nicky needing to feed on witches too, or nicky needing soul sacrifices to survive because he's the son of death etc. we don't have enough evidence to prove anything yet, but personally I headcanon nicky as a totally normal kid, that makes this story even more tragic.
and aww that baby suckling on the little pudgy fist
nicky doesn't look that happy about what he's been asked to do, does he?
we establish that nicky was sickly (maybe he was born with some internal defect that rio temporarily patched up?) we also see him steal the bell agatha will use for her Road scam in the future.
and we meet yet another witch being kind and wanting to help.
agatha: I love this six year old so much I'm gonna make him accessory to murder
dO yOU ShaME YouR MOtHER
and the big fake gasp too. as usual this bitch has conned a whole community
like, she's convinced herself that other witches are bad and are after her WHILE relying on witches's good hearts to con and kill them. what sort of mental gymnastics???
color goes from yellow to purple. nicky waits outside while his mom commits murder, it's not a good look on agatha. completely fucked up, actually.
(I'm terrified that the goat will end up being an agent of mephisto or something idiotic like that, lemme tell you. I hope they're just keeping it for milk and company.)
and here's the million dollar question. nicky has seen his mom kill literally since he was born, and now he's old enough to start realizing what that means.
oooh I know that look, that's agatha when she's put on the spot. she avoids his gaze, she can't be sincere with him.
and of course she's teaching herself spells from a book. nerrrrrrd
nicky, bless his soul, appears to give it a good thought and then offers a practical suggestion. I guess he wouldn't mind to have a roof on his head and some friends too.
GREAT acting from kathryn here. the quick OH SHIT face followed by the super final NO, with her jaw so rigid. in typical agatha fashion, when she's upset she becomes avoidant.
this is evanora's legacy. despite agatha's immense love for nicky, she is passing all that pain down and inflicting it on him.
remember when she called billy a survivor? this is the greatest asset in her opinion, the one she wants to teach her son. the truth is, she is angry at witches because she is scared of them, she's scared of being targeted again. but look at that kid's dark circles, I can't believe she's making him sleep in the woods, sick as he is!
really really fantastic subtlety. agatha wants to sound wise and strong, but she looks scared, uncertain, guilty.
see how nicky looks at agatha while he sings? he's checking to see if she's noticing, because his mom likes music and likes his voice. he's afraid he has upset her and wants to make her smile. he tried to reason with her, and now he tries to soothe her. this is what happens when you have an immature parent, a child will want to help, they will try to fix things. they'll end up parenting their parent, and it should always be the other way round.
agatha takes the bait. she's relieved that the conversation has moved to a safer subject. but oh, this script is so good. this is a mostly innocent, mostly sweet remark, but with a possessive undertone. don't forget that you are mine, she says.
and still, the love is real. even in a fucked up situation like this, these moment of happiness are precious and genuine and will linger on. look at how adoringly nicky looks at his mom, she's literally the sun and center of his small world, and that's how agatha likes it: she created nicky because she needed someone who could be hers without any baggage or consequences. but it turns out that raising a child is not a cheat code for love, it's one of the most difficult, most significant and impactful decisions a human can make.

HWLR: Future AU ✨
Cooper “Coop” Feng is the current Hot Wheels City racing champion, having held the title since he was old enough to join the city’s biggest racing cup! Still charismatic and confident, Coop is finding it a little harder now that he isn’t around all of his friends 24/7, but his spirit is yet to be extinguished. Coop is trying his best to balance professional life- being in the spotlight, chased around by fans and brands yearning for more of him, as well as his changing relationships, including feeling isolated from his friends, and his ever-complicated bond with racing rival Cruise.
Cruise Rearview is Coop’s greatest rival on the track- she’s fast, determined and undeniably talented, but still yet to best him. Her relationship with her father is strained at best, after she made the decision to pursue racing full-time, against his wishes. (Perhaps he should have thought about this before training her to be a racer!) Cruise is trying her best to turn a fresh page, and be a better person, but that is hard when people expect her to play the racing persona of “villain” even when she’s off the tracks.
Mackenzie “Mac” Caliper loves his job as a stunt driver. Rather than racing, he gets to show off all of his best stunts and tricks to arenas full of adoring fans. From cars, to monster trucks, and even a bike or two, he’s tried it all. When he’s doing stunts, Mac feels his best. In his spare time, Mac has picked up a bit of mechanic work, learning some skills from Spark. He loves to work on his jump trucks to make sure they are in top shape.
Samantha “Spark” Turner has become an inventor, putting her bright mind to use at every chance she can get. She makes everything, from new Power-Ups, boosters, and even cars! Spark also has a tendency to isolate and overwork herself to a concerning degree, disappearing into her lab for days when she’s especially invested in a project. She insists, everything must work perfectly, and she won’t rest until they do!
Feel free to ask questions regarding this AU!

Tamaranean Siblings, Part 2!
After the Body Swap incident, Phantom and Starfire get close. Really close. Turns out swapping bodies breaks down a lot of boundaries, and unlike Raven, the two have bonded. Starfire has always been a hugger, and she’s taken to carrying Phantom around like a teddy bear. Phantom is used to having a red-headed big sister, and ever since his parents worked the ecto-deflectors into their jumpsuits, he might maybe be a teensy bit touch starved. He loves to sprawl over Starfire whenever they hang out together.
It’s driving Robin up the wall. Phantom knows he’s been crushing on Starfire for a while, and he goes and does this?! He can’t help but get more brusque with Phantom, to the point it starts to interfere with group dynamics, and it prompts even Starfire to tell him off for it.
Danny confronts Dick privately to tell him off for being a total dingus. As far as the two of them are concerned, Kor’i and Danny are basically siblings now. He’s knows Dick has a crush on her; that’s why Danny has been trying to talk him up to Kor’i so she’ll give him a chance, and his attitude is not helping. Dick needs to CHILL OUT!
Robin: … Who?
Phantom: You live with her for pete’s sake! How do you not know her first name?!
This is also where it comes to light that Robin/Dick doesn’t actually have any dating experience.
Robin is a super popular super hero, leader of his team, and supposedly smooth and charismatic. Dick Grayson is the adopted son of Bruce frickin’ Wayne and beloved by the public. Danny’s at the bottom of the social ladder and he still got a date with the most popular girl in school. Twice! How are you this bad at girls?
Either way, things with Robin start to calm down and the group dynamic returns to normal (though Danny will never let him live down his lack of love life). But things in the training room start to heat up.
Starfire and Phantom now have a much better understanding of each other’s limits, and the gloves are off. The whole tower shakes whenever the two of them spar together, and they’re both experimenting with new ways to use their energy powers after seeing how the other uses theirs. Phantom even manages to give Starfire a black eye for the first time, and she’s ecstatic! It’s a Tamaranean thing. In their culture, it’s an accomplishment when a younger sibling to visibly injures the elder sibling for the first time. It shows how much the younger has grown and how well the elder has taught them. Starfire is super proud and posts it all over SpaceBook.
But Phantom has ulterior motives for pushing Starfire the way he has been. No one knows his strengths like Starfire does. More importantly, no one knows his weaknesses the way she does. If there’s anyone who’d know how to stop him…
Phantom asks Starfire to be his contingency plan, and explains everything that happened in The Ultimate Enemy, about his future self, what he did, and how terrified he is if he one day becomes that. If that ever happens, he wants her to be the one to take him out.
Don’t try to talk him out of it. He already gets it enough from his friends and sister that it won’t happen. That he’s a good person. He doesn’t need to worry about that, etc. He’s heard it all before, but… None of them have actually agreed or promised to end him if it does happen. And if it does… his friends are only human, and they couldn’t stop him before.
Starfire agrees. She can see how important this is to him, and she won’t lose Danny to a dark path the same way she lost her sister. The wave of relief that washes over him breaks Starfire’s heart. These must be the horrible feelings that led him to develop the Ghostly Wail.
Still, she is confident that this future won’t come to pass because he chooses not to let it happen. She, too, has been flung forward into a bleak future, but she knows nothing in the past, present or future is set in stone. She fought and changed the future with her own two hands. She’s knows Phantom is strong enough to do the same.
While Dick and Danny were never really good at staying in contact with each other, Kor’i is and keeps up her relationship with Danny even after he “retires.” She knew months before Dick of Jason did that he took the job at Arkham and is happy for him. It may not be the career path he wanted, but he found a good job and a way to still help people without his powers.

I didn’t know I needed inked!Hotch until now!
Would you ever do a part 2 where he comes home with a tattoo designed specially for reader added to his sleeve? Or maybe somewhere more personal on him?
New addition | [A.H]
Pairing: inked!Hotch x gn!Reader
CW: tattoos, fluff
WC: 0.6k
Summary: Hotch gets a new tattoo
The soft hum of music filled the living room as you curled up on the couch, a warm cup of tea cradled in your hands. The sun had just begun to set, casting a golden glow through the windows. It was a peaceful evening - you cherished the time alone, sometimes needing to sit in silence without a word spoken - until you heard the familiar sound of keys jingling at the door.
Aaron stepped inside, his suit jacket slung over one arm and a curious smile playing on his lips. "Hey," he greeted, his eyes lighting up as they met yours.
"Hey yourself," you replied, setting your mug on the table. "You're home early. Everything okay?"
"Everything's perfect," he assured, leaning down to place a soft kiss on your forehead. But there was something different about him - a hint of excitement he was trying to contain.
You raised a brow, noticing that his sleeves were rolled down and buttoned at the cuffs, which was unusual for him at home. "Long day?" you asked, gesturing to his unrolled sleeves.
He glanced at his wrists and chuckled softly. "Actually, I have something to show you."
Curiosity piqued, you sat up straighter. "Oh? What is it?"
Aaron set his jacket aside and took a seat next to you. Slowly, he began unbuttoning the cuff of his left sleeve, carefully rolling it up to reveal the familiar swirl of intricate tattoos that adorned his forearm. Your eyes widened as you noticed a fresh addition covered in plastic - a new design nestled seamlessly among the existing ink.
Your breath caught as you took in the delicate details. It was a beautiful rendering of a compass with a rose intertwined with your initials. The compass points were intricately shaded, and tiny, meaningful symbols were etched into each direction.
"Aaron…" you whispered, your fingers gently tracing the new tattoo. "You got this… for me?"
He nodded, his gaze soft and filled with affection. "I wanted to carry a part of you with me wherever I go," he said quietly. "You navigate me through the chaos."
Emotion welled up inside you, and you felt a warmth spread through your chest. "It's incredible. I don't know what to say."
He smiled gently. "You don't have to say anything. Just know how much you mean to me."
You looked up into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and love reflected there. "When did you do this?"
"During lunch today," he admitted with a small chuckle. "I've been working with the artist for weeks to get it just right."
A playful smirk crossed your face. "So that's why you've been sneaking out and being all mysterious lately."
He laughed, the sound sending a pleasant thrill through you. "Guilty as charged."
You leaned in, pressing a soft kiss against his lips. "Thank you," you murmured. "It's the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me."
He rested his forehead against yours. "You inspire me," he whispered. "It felt right to make it a part of me - just like you've become."
You sat together in comfortable silence, your hand resting over the new ink. After a moment, a mischievous glint sparkled in your eyes. "You know, this means I get artistic input on any future tattoos."
He raised an eyebrow playfully. "Oh, does it now?"
"Absolutely," you teased. "I might just have a few ideas."
He chuckled, wrapping an arm around you. "I'm open to suggestions - as long as I get to choose the placement."
"Deal," you agreed, snuggling closer to him.
"Maybe next time, we can get matching ones," you suggested softly.
He looked down at you, his eyes reflecting the soft glow of the room. "I'd like that," he replied. "Very much."
You smiled, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "It's a date, then."
"Definitely a date," he agreed, holding you a little tighter.

For me, Shadow and Amy's dynamic is basically two different types of touch starved in a person
((If any of the gifs on this post aren’t loading for you on mobile--like they aren’t for me--you can download them or check the sources listed. As for desktop, they play just fine, but they won’t line up next to each other like they do on mobile. Tumblr is a comedy of errors.))
Yes! Absolutely. I’ve seen tons of fans say Shadow is prickly and would respond badly to hugs, but canon says otherwise. This is a bad reaction:
[Sonic 06]
Whenever I feel like being sad, I wonder if Bad-Future-06 Silver has ever been hugged.
This is a bad reaction:
[Sonic Unleashed, gif source.]
And I shouldn’t have to say this, but...yeah. These are very bad reactions:
[Sonic X]
[Sonic Generations]
Yikes. I feel bad for both of them.
But this?
[Sonic Adventure 2, gif source.]
This is Shadow’s only canonical hug in the games, and aside from jumping slightly from being snuck up on, he seems to like it just fine.
Just look at that smile! He’s happy. He finds it endearing.
It was a hug from a complete stranger meant for someone else, but he still drank it in--and, given that he’d effectively just lost Maria, he really did need it. It’s the combination of Amy’s gentleness AND her speech that changed his mind. After all, if someone as sweet as her sees something in the humans, maybe they’re not so bad.
My buddy who runs @shadowxamyweek recently reblogged a post about this hug, and their tags sum it up perfectly:
[ID: A screenshot of tags on a post. The tags read:
#official art #4kids #shadow the hedgehog #amy rose #YEAH 😭 #listen I read nothing that has happened with them in SA2 as shippy - and i ship them #THIS HUG? THR SPEECH ON THE ARK? #those are two lonely kids #those are two left behind kids #those are two kids so desperate for affection #for two vastly different reasons #Amy loves with her whole chest and will never stop doing so- no matter what happens #and Shadow does too- that is key to remember- Shadow loves... so fucking much... that it hurts #you are RIGHT op when you say this is probably the first time someone has been gentle with him in a long long time #he doesn't even run away #in the game- when Amy flees- he takes a step after her- a moment's hesitation- a 'wait' #this kid NEEDED a hug #and i firmly believe part of the reason Shadow listens to Amy in the end is BECAUSE she is the only person who showed him gentleness #softness and kindness and affection #if only for a moment #fjdodhdofjgor THIS is what i mean when i say 'be gentle- be kind' #it MATTERS #it FUCKING MATTERS
End ID]
Shadow doesn’t hate hugs inherently; it’s just that no one hugs him in the first place...
...aside from one person.
Amy’s easily the most affectionate character in the cast. It’s cute at first glance, but there’s a common thread to every instance that puts a damper on it.
She’s always, ALWAYS the initiator.
She puts more into each hug than anyone else does.
She’s always the last to pull away.
The most reciprocated Amy hug I know of in canon is this one:
[IDW Sonic issue #22]
Which is absolutely adorable...but Amy still initiated. Because it’s always her job. Even the characters who like affection don’t need it the way she does...with one exception.
And this tiny detail just killed me. The little, “wait, come back 😟”
It’s the only time I know of when someone has actually stepped after her like this. In a game where everyone left Amy behind, he wanted to follow her. Mister so-called-prickly didn’t want the hug to end.
Because he’s the only one who needs it as much as she does.
He wants to be held as much as she wants to hold someone else, and no one else is warm and sincere enough for it. Compare these instances:
[IDW issue #6]
Sonic thinks Shadow is wrong about something, so he grabs Shadow’s arm to stop him, and Shadow aggressively wrenches it away and leaves.
[Archie Sonic Universe #23]
But when Amy thinks Shadow is wrong about something and grabs his arm to stop him, he gently removes her hand and thinks about what she has to say.
Even when he doesn’t want to be touched, he makes the distinction between “don’t touch me” and “not right now, please.” These are from two different continuities, of course, but I think the point stands. Amy’s special. He’s gentler with her than he is with other people, and that’s consistent across all canons.
Side note: how often does Amy get to feel special like that? I actually really like that Sonic doesn’t place others in a hierarchy of importance, and I wouldn’t change that about him even if I could...
[IDW issue #2]
...but Amy does play favorites. I want her to feel like she’s someone else’s favorite, too. I want her to have someone who puts her first and likes her best. I think Shadow’s more than capable of that. I believe he craves clinginess like hers deep down, even if he hasn’t consciously figured that out yet.
I have an entire tag for these two being affectionate. My favorite is probably this one.
Of course, there may be those who say I’m reading too much into one (1) hug. And you know what? Maybe they’re right! We need a bigger sample size. Sega, make more characters hug Shadow, please. Let Rouge comfort him after he confides in her about something. Have Omega give him an awkward metal embrace because he read on the internet that organic beings like that kind of thing. Make Shadow himself pull Silver into a hug when he’s breaking down crying from the stress of always having to be a hero. Show Tails accidentally grab onto him out of fear when they’re trapped in a lightning storm, and when he gets embarrassed and pulls away, have Shadow hold him for the rest of the storm and admit he’s not fond of bright lights, either.
[Sonic Boom]
That scene where Shadow and Amy rescue Cream and Cheese from Cryptic Castle? That easily could’ve turned into a cute group hug.
[Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)]
And I have seen some absolutely adorable fanart where he holds Cream’s hand while he and Amy lead her through Cryptic Castle to make sure she doesn’t get lost 🥺
Have Knuckles give him an empathetic bro-pat on the shoulder when he finds out Shadow’s the last one of his race, too.
[Archie Sonic Universe #89]
Have Sonic try to hug him, and then when Shadow inevitably pushes him away and says he doesn’t do hugs, have Amy arrive and latch onto Shadow instead while he tries to stutter out an excuse as to why she’s allowed to and Sonic isn’t.
The most affection Shadow has in recent history is stuff like this...
youtube
[Sonic Prime season 2 episode 1]
...where Sonic tries to hug him and Shadow immediately pushes him away, knocks him over, and tries to punch him in the face. Kind of says it all. Amy stands out as the only one with a good track record here.
[IDW issue #36]
Especially when you have him look at her like this when someone else is on the receiving end of that affection.
So in the absence of further evidence, I have no choice but to interpret this in the most Shadamy way possible. Your move, Sega.
#shadamy#amy rose#shadow the hedgehog#not a headcanon#ask#anonymous#what is it with touch starved hedgehogs?#not the first time i've used the previous tag. says a lot about these characters#meta analysis

𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓 ; 𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐆𝐄 𝐁𝐔𝐄𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐑𝐒
read part one here ✧・゚
꣑୧ — summary | you and Paige had been inseparable since the two of you were younger, she's adored you since the day she laid eyes on you. with you oblivious to her feelings, how does she plan on making you see her the way she sees you? (continued)
wc ; 758

my master list ♡
a/n : here’s part 2 to “from the start” ! If you haven’t read the first part , make sure to check it out before reading this one ! Enjoy besties ◡̈
Our time together became more frequent. We’d hang out at the park, grabbing ice cream and talking about everything and nothing. Paige’s presence was a comfort I had come to rely on, though I still didn’t see the deeper meaning behind her actions.
One night, as we lay on the grass watching the stars, Paige turned to me, her expression serious. “Have you ever thought about the future, like what you want to do, where you want to be?”
I shrugged, my eyes fixed on the twinkling sky. “I guess I haven’t really thought that far ahead. What about you?”
Paige hesitated, then said softly, “I know one thing for sure. I want to be with people who make me happy.”
I turned to her, meeting her gaze. “You’ll always have me,” I said, not realizing how much those words meant to her.
Our high school prom was approaching, and everyone was buzzing with excitement. I hadn’t thought about asking anyone, but Paige had already made up her mind.
“Hey, who are you taking to prom?” she asked casually one afternoon.
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it.”
Paige bit her lip, gathering her courage. “How about we go together? As friends, of course,” she added quickly, masking her true hopes.
“Yeah, that sounds great!” I agreed, genuinely pleased at the idea of spending the evening with my best friend.
Prom night arrived, and Paige looked stunning in her deep blue dress. I couldn’t help but stare, suddenly aware of how beautiful she was. We danced and laughed, and for a moment, I felt something shift in my chest, a strange new feeling I couldn’t quite place.
The weeks following prom were a blur of final exams and graduation preparations. Paige and I spent even more time together, making the most of our last days of high school. One evening, as we sat in my room listening to music, Paige turned to me, her expression unreadable.
“Can I tell you something?” she asked, her voice almost a whisper.
“Of course,” I replied, sensing the seriousness of the moment.
“I’ve… I’ve had feelings for you for a long time,” she confessed, her eyes searching mine for a reaction.
I blinked, stunned. “You mean, like… more than friends?”
Paige nodded, biting her lip nervously. “Yes, more than friends. I’ve been trying to show you, but I guess I wasn’t very good at it.”
I sat there, processing her words. Suddenly, everything made sense—the notes, the little gestures, the way she looked at me. My heart pounded as I realized that maybe, just maybe, I felt the same way.
“Paige, I… I think I’ve been blind. But now that you’ve said it, I realize that I care about you too. More than just a friend.”
Paige’s eyes lit up with hope. “Really?”
“Really,” I confirmed, reaching for her hand. “I’ve always felt something, but I didn’t know what it was until now.”
With our feelings finally out in the open, Paige and I embarked on a new chapter of our relationship. It was a slow burn, as we navigated the transition from best friends to something more. There were moments of awkwardness and uncertainty, but also moments of pure joy and tenderness.
We spent the summer together, exploring our new dynamic. Each touch, each kiss, was a revelation, deepening our bond. Our friends noticed the change, and they were happy for us, having seen the connection we shared all along.
There was a tiny bit of angst, as we worried about what the future would hold, especially with college on the horizon. But we faced it together, confident in our love and the strength of our friendship.
As we stood on the threshold of a new adventure, hand in hand, I realized that Paige had been right all along. The magic of our connection was undeniable, and I was grateful every day for the love that had been right in front of me all these years.
Years later, as we walked down the aisle on our wedding day, I looked at Paige and saw the same shy smile that had captured my heart so long ago. She had adored me from the start, and now, I could finally say that I adored her just as much.

AninPin Character (and dynamics?) Analysis part 2
The time has come folks
Pin and Kueshit's wedding has brought our girls to their breaking point and now is a great time to see how they are facing their biggest challenges so far
¿Remember I said I wanted to see what Anin would do when she didn't get what she wanted?
I love Anin but today she was cruel.
I agree that needing space is valid after heartbreak, however, giving Pin false hope and then kicking her while she's down was uncalled for. Pin made a choice she did not like so Anin punished her, and I can't help but compare it to aunt Patt's attitude, and the rest of the royal family's (not you Anan) attitude towards those of lower rank, however polite or harsh they might be, the message is the same: you do as I say I reward you, you don't I punish you. It's classical conditioning at play
Also the fact that Anin is standing on the stairs, making her taller than Pin while Pin literally begs her no to leave was a nice touch that keeps reminding us of the power imbalance between these two
I know I must sound like a hater right now so let's get in to the actual character analysis
In this scene both our girls are super triggered, this makes their personalities condense: get more rigid. That happens in order to give them a sense of safety in times of caos and percieved danger
Anin is confrontative, she confronted her family on the last ep, she confronted Pin on this one, and she confronted the situation about Kuea's wife. Anin takes direct action, this is the way in wich she thinks she can affect her reality. And SHE CAN DO THAT BECAUSE OF HER PRIVILEGE
Anin was not gonna leave until she had tried Every. Single. Thing. She could do in order to stop that wedding
So when Pin decided to marry Kuea, and then again today when she decided not to push back against the wedding Anin took that to heart. She is having a hard time understanding that Pin handles conflict in a different way than she does. Of couse she is heartbroken, not only is she losing the woman she loves, in some part of her brain she thinks Pin must not love her enough to take direct actions against the wedding like she does. She sees Pin's sacrifice as her giving up their love so she's sad and angry (she's also not used to losing)
Now let's do Pin
Pin has serious abandonment trauma, wich started after her parents deaths
When Anin came in to her life she was like a lifeline, promissing to always be by her side, so this scene was particularly hard to watch for me
Again, Pin is super triggered, Anin leaving feels like a huge threat to her. We see Anin has a big safety net, people who care for her. But Pin has none (maybe Prik)
So Pin does what she knows best, she lowers her head, apologises, tries to please as she can, she flagellates herself (she knows Anin is punishing her so she helps her), she says she is disgusted by herself because she chose to marry Kuea, but there is simply no way out of this for her
This frustrates Anin, cause Pin's obedience is affecting her directly, and she cannot actually understand the crossroads Pin is at right now, try as she might, she simply can't
Here Pin explains her line of thought very well, she feels powerless and the only way she knows how to affect her reality is by surrendering to what she thinks is inevitable (and she's not far from reality) this surrender can give her some solace, she has learned that she is helpless so why fight when you can't win
And again she self-flagellates for inflicting pain on Anin (or anyone at that), which is comonly thaught to us women and we see it again on today's episode when Kuea's wife says she does't wanna "ruin his future" by exposing his wrong doings
Still Anin can't understand Pin's choices cause their experiences are way too different and Anin has fought right? So why wouldn't Pin fight for their love as well?
So she takes action, she takes off her ring and lets it fall to the ground, she leaves
And this picture right here reminds me of:
Pin is yet again left to face the storm all alone

"You're all that I need" Theodore Nott × f!reader
Pt 2
Summary: where Theodore realised you're all he needed but maybe it was little too late for that, or was it?
Warnings: angst ig
This is based on my favourite song CO2 by prateek kuhad!! Part two will come out shortly and better than this. I was in deep sleep while writing this so this is poorly written ik, sorry for that!!
"oh come on Theodore! You really can't treat me like someone you can have at any time you want without giving any labels to our relationship!!" I yelled at him as I shut the door of his dorm so that no one could here us.
It's been a repeating cycle for entire week.
He treats me like his gf and the next min he's flirting with random chick at Hogwarts.
Whenever I ask him about our status all he says is he needs time to figure out, to be himself and to know what he wants.
We've been seeing eachother (if you can say that) for almost 5 months and went without labels now it was too much for me.
"oh come on just give me a little more time please" he pleaded with teary eyes, and I can't help but look away.
"no Theodore not anymore, if you can't commit fully towards me, then you can't have me." With that I left his dorm, in hope that he would atleast try to stop me, stop me from running away, stop me from walking out his life, but no nothing happened.
The next morning I entered our common room and sat near pansy, who was reading a book.
Theodore and his friends sat exact opposite to us, and our eyes met.
Both of our eyes held the same emotions. desperation, desire, love, and heartbreak. One emotion was missing and that was acceptance.
Maybe we both haven't accepted it. So I guess there has to be a hope from both the sides right?
I swear to god if there was peace around us, we both could hear the literal words.
And maybe this is meant to be this way.
For us to be away.
I mean that's what happens in most of the love story right? The lover gets seperated because they weren't ready.
Ready for eachother, for the commitment, for the price they would've to pay.
After few minutes I saw him leaving the common room. Just like the day i left his dorm.
I'll be fine right? I mean I've experienced this beforehand.
I have dealt with people leaving me.
It won't caused much harm right?
Oh how wrong I was.
Theodore is like oxygen for me. I need him to breath, to survive, to live.
And without him I'm nothing.
I was walking down the corridor with Enzo by my side, we were laughing at his silly jokes and I felt someone's eyes boring into me.
I looked at my surroundings to see Theodore glaring at us.
Even if he never see it, he was all I needed, all I wanted. Not Enzo not anyone but him.
Maybe he won't see it now, but in future he will right?
I was deep in my thoughts, wondering why I love him? Why can't I get over him? Why do I need him? Why do I want him?
Maybe it's the silence in his eyes,
Or the deep red when he's shy,
Or the Mystery of our love,
All I need is the sign from stars above,
Maybe it's the way he breath in me,
Or it's the way he heals the girl in me,
Maybe it's the fragrance of his hair,
I just want to kiss him when he's there.
I shook my thoughts away as they were taking a different turn.
I just him all around me, but why can't he make it happen.
Why does he have to be so complicated.
I laid down on my bed thinking the possibilities of us. Will we ever happen? Or will we drift apart just like that?

Jiminjeong x fem!reader
Previous → part 2 .
Chapter 3:
Sitting in the park, Minjeong and Jimin watched Y/n closely. The tension in the air was palpable, and every second felt like an eternity as they waited for the response that would change their lives. Y/n took a deep breath, seemingly struggling to find the right words.
"I’ve thought a lot about what you both told me," she began, her voice soft but firm. "And I need to be honest with you because you deserve the truth."
Minjeong and Jimin exchanged anxious glances. Both their hearts were racing, bracing themselves for whatever was coming next.
"I like you both," Y/n continued, looking directly at each of them. "But what I feel is… complicated. Because I’ve realized something I didn’t expect. It’s not that I like only one of you. I... I like both of you."
The silence that followed seemed to echo through the park. Minjeong and Jimin were left speechless, unable to process what they had just heard. What Y/n was saying was completely unexpected.
Y/n went on, trying to explain her feelings better. "When you told me you were competing for me, I was so surprised. But as I thought about it, I realized my feelings for both of you are strong, and not in different ways. I’m drawn to Minjeong’s sweetness and sensitivity just as much as I am to Jimin’s confidence and energy. The problem is… I can’t choose."
Minjeong, still trying to process everything, looked at Jimin, who seemed equally confused. "So, you’re saying that… you like us both at the same time?" Minjeong asked cautiously.
Y/n nodded, appearing somewhat relieved to have finally confessed. "Yes. And I know it sounds complicated, but I can’t deny what I feel. I always thought that when the time came, it would be easier, that I’d know right away who my heart belonged to more. But the truth is, I feel complete with both of you."
Jimin, usually quick to respond, stayed silent for a moment before finally speaking. "And… what does that mean, then? Because honestly, I never saw this coming."
Minjeong also seemed uncertain. She looked at Y/n, then at Jimin, trying to grasp what this meant for their future.
Y/n sighed, her expression vulnerable. "I don’t expect you to accept this easily, or to understand right away. But before you make any decisions, I wanted to be honest about what I feel. If you don’t want to go down this path, I’ll completely understand. But if there’s any chance we could find a way to make this work, I’d like to try."
Y/n’s proposal was unexpected, and both Minjeong and Jimin knew it would be a challenge. Up until that moment, both had believed that in the end, there would be only one winner. But what if, instead of competing, they could find a balance that honored all their feelings?
Jimin, the first to recover from the shock, chuckled softly. "I’m not gonna lie, this is completely crazy. But at the same time… I don’t want to lose either of you. Minjeong, you’re my best friend, and Y/n, you’re so special to me. Maybe… maybe we can figure this out together?"
Minjeong looked at Jimin, surprised by her response. Part of her still felt unsure, but seeing Jimin so open to the possibility made her think. She looked at Y/n, seeing the genuine sincerity in her eyes, then back at Jimin.
"It’s crazy, yeah," Minjeong finally admitted, smiling. "But… I don’t want to lose anyone either. If you two are willing to try, I think I can try too."
Y/n smiled, clearly relieved. "It’s not going to be easy. I know this is new for all of us, and we’re going to need a lot of patience and communication. But if we can find a way, I think we can be really happy together."
And so, what seemed like a simple competition transformed into an unexpected and unique relationship. Minjeong, Jimin, and Y/n decided to move forward, unsure of what the future held but confident that together, they could overcome any challenge. What started as a rivalry for Y/n’s heart had evolved into something much more complex but also more beautiful: a deep connection between three people who decided, against all odds, to create something new and special.
The weeks that followed were a period of adjustment and learning. There were moments of insecurity and doubt, but over time, the three learned to communicate better, to respect each other’s feelings, and above all, to value the unique connection they shared.
Minjeong and Jimin, despite starting as rivals, found a new way to relate to each other. They realized that instead of competing, they could support and appreciate the differences each brought to the relationship. And Y/n, at the center of this dynamic, felt grateful to have two incredible people by her side, both willing to try something as unexpected as the love they shared.
By the end of that summer, they knew they didn’t have all the answers, and the road ahead would be full of challenges. But for the first time, they were willing to walk it together, embracing the uncertainties and trusting what they felt. After all, love, in all its forms, can be complicated, but it’s also capable of creating deep and unexpected connections—like the one Minjeong, Jimin, and Y/n had found.

After all this time
Paring: Chris evans x male reader
Warnings: none just a fluff fic
Note: writing this gave me an idea to potentially make a part 2 to this maybe I don’t know
Requested by anonymous: Hello, I really like how you write, if possible, could you do one of Chris Evans x male reader where Chris meets the reader, they were friends from those old years in Boston but they lost contact due to Chris's career, where the reader felt things for him (and he still does), but they never confessed until that reunion? I leave the reason for the reunion to your choice, as well as whether you leave it in fluff or in smut.
it was late at night and you were scrolling through your phone on instagram. when you suddenly got a memory notification when you clicked you saw a picture of you and another slightly taller and handsome man, right off the bat you knew who it was your best friend, Chris Evans. Chris and you had been friends for a long time, you grew up together in the lively streets of the American neighborhood in Boston. You had shared countless memories exploring the city, cheering on the Red Sox, and dreaming of their future. Chris was the charming and athletic one, always the life of the group, and everyone thought he was destined for great things. you on the other hand, were quieter and more thoughtful, often appreciating Chris's infectious energy but never quite feeling like you measured up. Seeing the photo it rose a feeling you’d long forgotten. A flicker of a smile on your lips as you realise just how much of a crush you’d had on Chris. through time you and Chris had slowly lost contract as Chris became more and more involved in his career. You went from talking to almost every day to talking to every few months and slowly to almost never talking. You felt the pang of guilt in your heart for not being so direct with Chris and confessing your feelings to him. you doubt he’d even recognise you if you’d meet him again.
You were about to swipe away when you suddenly saw a follow notification on Instagram. It was Chris, he had followed you. You couldn’t believe it. Your heart was beating so fast you felt it would burst out of your chest and your mind was racing with a thousand thoughts. Without thinking you quickly opened up his page in a daze. The first thing you noticed was the number of followers he had, of course he did he was a freaking celebrity now. You’d seen so many of his projects and you knew how talented he was. The second thing you realised when you saw his most recent photo was that he had not changed a bit, still as handsome as ever.
The realisation of that fact made you pause, you hadn’t spoken in so long. Why would he follow you? The feeling of excitement mixed with fear was overwhelming but you also couldn’t help that feeling of hope growing inside you. Maybe he felt the same way you did. It was stupid to even hope for it. He was a celebrity, he could have anyone he wanted, why would he want you? you quickly shook your head clearing these thoughts from your head, your heart just hurt.
Your phone suddenly vibrated, snapping you out of your thoughts. It was a notification from Chris. A message. You stared at the screen in disbelief for a moment and with a deep breath you opened up the message. Your heart skipped a beat as soon as you saw the words “Hey it’s me Chris. Can’t believe it’s been years since that photo” a smile went across your face he got the same notification of the memory of you both as well He had found you again. You typed back with shaky fingers.
You: “Hey, Chris, it’s been a while” you replied, hoping your heart rate would return to normal.
Chris: “I know, too long. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get in touch.”
You tried to think of something witty to say but your mind was blank. You had always been the quieter one among you two and talking to him now made you feel like a teenager again.
You: “I’ve always wanted to reach out and catch up” you admitted.
Chris: “I’m sorry I didn’t do it sooner. It’s just been crazy, you know?”
You: “Yeah, I understand, the whole practically knows you at this point.”
There were so many things you wanted to say, so many questions you wanted to ask. But it felt like there was an invisible barrier between you and him, all these thoughts and feelings held back by a wall of insecurity.
Chris: “well they know of me. They don’t know me not like you did…..I’m glad I found you again”
His simple words hit you unexpectedly. You could feel his sincerity through the screen, the connection that hadn’t faded after all these years. You tried to keep your cool.
You: “Same here, I’ve missed you.”
Chris: “Me too.”
The conversation was flowing so easily, but deep down you wanted it to be more. You knew you needed to tell him how you felt, you couldn’t go through life wondering what if.
Suddenly another message from him popped up.
Chris: “We should meet up, talk in person.”
Your heart was racing again. You couldn’t believe he wanted to see you, but you couldn’t deny the excitement you suddenly felt.
You: “That sounds great, when?”
Chris: “I’m actually in town at the moment. our college is having a a reunion this weekend. I was debating on whether or not to go ”
Your eyes widened at the message, he was here in the city? You didn’t even think you’d be able to see him today and he was already in town.
You: “Really? I barely even know of the reunion”
You couldn’t keep the eagerness out of your voice.
Chris: “Well now you do. And you should go, it could be fun. Imagine all those old memories.”
There was something about the way he said “old memories” that made your heart flutter.
You: “You’re right, it could be fun. but I’ve not exactly achieved much in the years. unlike you where you’ve practically become a massive actor”
It could be a chance. A chance to finally confront the feelings you’d shoved down so long ago.
Chris: “Come on you don’t sell yourself short. I’m pretty sure that’s the same thing you said even back in high school”
He remembered that? You couldn’t help smiling at the thought that he had paid that much attention to you. Chris had always been kind, but there was something different about the way he was talking to you now. Like he cared more.
Chris: “Promise me you’ll go to the reunion.”
He was being relentless, he clearly wanted you to be there.
You: “Okay okay I’ll go, I forgot how you can be pretty demanding”
You teased, it was a natural response after all the years of banter and friendly teasing.
Chris: “Hey, you loved my persistence.”
That message made you pause. It was just harmless banter but it brought back a thousand memories. Memories of you two hanging out in the streets of Boston, your late night walks, or the quiet moments of comfort when you were both tired and stressed. He was right you loved his persistence. A part of you always had. And still does.
Chris: “Can’t wait to see you again”
Your heart was beating rapidly at those words. You were finally going to see him after all these years. You felt like a high school student again.
You: “See you there”
And with that, the conversation had ended. You set your phone down, trying to process everything that just happened. Chris had found you and now you were going to see him again. All the feelings you’d buried so long ago were starting to flood back. You couldn’t help it, something was stirring in your chest, a mixture of excitement and anxiety. But you couldn’t deny you were looking forward to it. Time seemed to crawl by after that, your mind fixated on the upcoming reunion.
Finally the day of the reunion arrived. You were nervous as hell, but also couldn’t help the small spark of excitement that was in your chest. You got ready quickly, not wanting to give yourself the time to doubt yourself. You chose your clothes carefully, you wanted to look nice. The thought of seeing Chris again made you want to look your best. You took one last look at yourself in the mirror and took a deep breath before heading out.
The reunion was set to take place in your old college’s courtyard. When you arrived, you noticed people had already begun to gather. People you hadn’t seen in years and others you thought you had long forgotten. As you walked in, you couldn’t help but scan the crowd nervously, looking for one familiar face.
After what felt like an eternity, you finally spotted him. Standing at the far end of the courtyard was Chris. The years had only enhanced his natural good looks and the air of fame followed him like a shadow. He was surrounded by a group of people, talking and laughing. You stood there, unnoticed, feeling like a teen all over again.
Chris suddenly looked up, his gaze sweeping over the crowd. Your heart skipped a beat as his eyes landed on you and a smile broke across his face. He said a few quick words to his group before he started walking towards you.
Every step he took made your heart beat faster. He had noticed you, the way he had smiled made your knees weak. As he got closer, you tried to sound casual but you couldn’t keep the slight tremor from your voice.
“Hey, you actually came” He greeted you, that same infectious smile on his face.
“Yeah, I said I would” you tried to sound indifferent but your voice was betraying you. You looked up at him, and for a moment it felt like time had stopped. The years apart seemed to fade away, and it was just you and him, standing there in the middle of the courtyard.
Chris looked at you, his eyes studying you intently. “You look good” he said finally, a hint of something in his voice you couldn’t place.
“You don’t look too bad yourself” you managed to respond, trying to keep your heart from beating out of your chest.
Something about the way he was looking at you made you feel shy. It was different from before. But before you could speak again, he was looking around.
“Come on, I want to show you something”
he said, taking your hand in his. The gesture caught you off guard, but you were too flustered to object as he led you through the crowd.
He guided you through the crowds, his hand around yours. The contact of his skin against yours sent jolts of electricity through you, bringing back a flood of memories of your childhood together. You tried to focus on anything but the feeling of his hand holding onto yours but you were hyper aware of every little thing. As he pulled you along, you couldn’t help but feel like you were following a familiar path.
You realised quickly where he was leading you. It was to the spot you two used to spend a lot of time in. It was a quiet bench, away from the hustle and bustle of the campus.
When you were younger, it was often this spot that you and him would escape to. Sometimes simply to talk away from the others and hang out. it became a nostalgic spot. memories rushing in your head as you thought about all the stuff you’d talked about sitting on the chair and just rambling about crushes, dreams, fears and the things you wanted to do.
He stopped, gesturing for you to sit on the bench beside him.
You sat down next to him, the cool air of the evening bringing back waves of memories. You were acutely aware of the way he was looking at you, a small smile on his face.
“I can’t believe you remembered this place” you said, trying to distract yourself from the way your heart was racing.
"Of course I remembered.” He chuckled, looking around. “How could I forget? We practically lived here during our school days.”
There was something in the way he looked at the spot, a hint of nostalgia in his voice. It was as if he was reliving the memories just as vividly as you were.
The silence that followed was comfortable, as if the years apart hadn’t diminished the connection you had. He leaned back, resting his arms on the backrest of the bench, his hand nearly touching your arm.
“Remember how we used to talk for hours here?” he broke the silence, his gaze still on the scenery around.
You smiled faintly at his question. Those memories were some of your most treasured. Many nights spent sitting on this very bench, talking about dreams and ambitions, hopes and fears.
“How could I forget?” You replied, a hint of warmth in your voice. "We talked so long our voices always hurt the next morning”
He laughed heartily at that. "Yeah, those were some good times."
He finally looked at you, that warm smile still on his face.
"Seems like you remember all of it,” he said, a hint of curiosity in his voice.
You tried not to show how his smile affected you, nodding slightly.
“Of course I do. I could never forget any of it.” Your voice lowered instinctively, the sincerity coming through.
His smile softened at your words, a flicker of something in his eyes that you couldn’t place. He paused for a moment, as if weighing his words, before speaking again.
“You know, those memories here... they mean a lot to me. And part of me was hoping you'd be here tonight.”
You were so stunned by his words that you forgot to breathe for a moment. Part of him was hoping you’d be here? Your heart was in your throat now, the air was crackling with tension.
"And why’s that?" You managed to get out, your voice betraying your nervous excitement.
His hand shifted on the bench, his fingers lightly brushing against your sleeve. "Because you’ve always been important to me."
He was looking at you intently, his voice laced with something you couldn’t quite put a finger on. It was almost like a confession, but his eyes held more than just simple friendship.
Your heart leaped into your throat. His words, the way he was looking at you. Could it be..
You swallowed, trying to find your voice. “I-“
The words got stuck in your throat and you couldn’t get them out. A part of you wanted to say everything you felt, to finally confess after all these years, but the fear of rejection was holding you back.
Chris noticed your hesitation, his gaze now questioning but not leaving you. He moved subtly closer, his hand now gently wrapped around your shoulder, the touch sending shivers down your spine.
"Is something wrong?" he asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
The feeling of his touch was both comforting and overwhelming. You looked up at him, the feelings you’d suppressed for so long bubbling inside you.
"No, it’s just-" you paused, looking down. "There’s something I need to tell you."
You braced yourself, trying to calm your racing heart. This was your chance, now or never.
He seemed to sense the seriousness in your voice, his hand still resting on your shoulder. "What is it?"
He looked slightly worried now, his eyes locked on yours. The silence between you was almost deafening.
You took a deep breath, gathering your courage. This was it. No more holding back.
"Chris, I-" the words got stuck in your throat again.
The feelings you’d kept hidden for so long were finally bubbling over, and the thought of rejection was scarier than anything, but you had to force the words out.
"I've always-“ you inhaled, gathering your courage. “I've always had feelings for you.”
The words hung in the air, your heart pounding in your chest. You didn’t dare look at his face, suddenly regretting the confession.
There was a silence that lasted for what felt like an eternity. And just as you started to fear the worst, he finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.
“You have?”
You nodded hesitantly, looking up at him. He was staring back at you, his eyes wide and something like wonder there. There was something unreadable in his expression, a mix of emotions you couldn’t pinpoint. But he was still listening.
"Ever since high school," you admitted. “I never had the courage to tell you.”
He was still silent, processing your confession. But instead of the rejection you feared, he looked more like he was in shock.
"Ever since high school..?"
The question seemed to be more to himself than you, but you nodded again, the weight of the secret finally lifted from you.
He looked at you for a moment longer, his hand still on your shoulder. And then, unexpectedly, he laughed.
His laughter caught you off guard. You had been fully expecting denial or dismissal, but his laugh wasn’t mocking. It sounded like he was in disbelief, as if he couldn’t believe what you’d told him.
You watched him, confusion written all over your face. “Why are you laughing?” You finally asked, suddenly feeling vulnerable
He shook his head, still smiling. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. It’s just..”
He trailed off, taking a deep breath before meeting your gaze again. He looked almost amused, a hint of disbelief still on his face.
"Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you to say that?”
His question caught you off guard. “Wait, what?”
You stared at him, not quite understanding what he meant. Had he been waiting for you to confess? The thought seemed impossible.
But he was looking at you intently, his hand still on your shoulder, a faint smile on his lips. He was serious.
“I’ve been waiting for you to say that for years,” he repeated, his eyes never leaving yours.
His confession hit you like a truck. For years? He’d been feeling the same way but never said anything? You were completely stunned.
"You.. you’ve felt the same way all this time?” You asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
He smiled faintly, giving you a gentle nod. “For as long as you did, I’d imagine. You just finally said it first.”
You were still trying to process his words. The fact that he had feelings for you this entire time was almost too much to grasp.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” You asked, your voice wavering slightly.
He chuckled lightly, his hand subconsciously tracing small circles on your shoulder. “Probably the same reason you didn’t. Didn’t want to ruin our friendship.”
His thumb was now tracing the outline of your collarbone. The gesture wasn’t sexual, more thoughtful and absentminded.
His touch was sending tingles down your spine. Hearing that he’d been worried about ruining the friendship made your heart flutter. The realisation that all the feelings you’d pushed down had been mutual for all this time was overwhelming.
“So then, what now?” you finally asked, your voice betraying the mixture of emotions within you.
His fingers curled around your shoulder, gently drawing you closer to him.
“What do you want to do?” he replied.
You didn’t need to think about the answer. You looked up at him, your body now almost touching his.
“I want this,” you answered breathlessly.
His grip on your shoulder tightened slightly, his eyes never leaving yours.
“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper, but you could sense the hint of longing in it.
You nodded, your heart racing in your chest. “I’m sure,” you said, feeling his fingers on your skin. “I want you.”
He pulled you closer to him, his hand now on your lower back. The distance between you was gone. He looked at you, his eyes burning with an intensity you’d never seen before.
“your sure?.” He spoke, his voice low. “it’s gonna be intense. there’s gonna headlines. flashing paparazzi cameras every time we go out. travelling the world with me to film.”
You looked up at him, the warnings in his voice clear. He was right, being with him was dangerous. It would change your life.
But at that moment, you realised you didn’t care.
You didn’t care about the possible trouble, the headlines or the cameras. All you knew was that you wanted him, and you wanted everything with him.
“I’m sure” you repeated firmly, your voice filled with determination. “I want everything with you.”
A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips, his eyes now sparkling with a mixture of surprise and excitement.
He raised his hand slowly to your face, his fingers lightly tracing the line of your jaw before cupping your chin. He leaned in towards you, his breath warm against your skin.
“then I’m not letting you go” he said, his voice low. “not after all this time.”
The words sent a shiver through you, his breath against your skin making you weak.
"You better not," you replied, your voice soft but filled with conviction.
He chuckled lightly, his hand still holding your chin, his thumb brushing your lower lip.
"Don’t worry, I won’t," he said, his voice filled with promise.
With that, he leaned in closer, his lips finally meeting yours.
Your eyes fluttered closed as you felt his lips on yours. The kiss was gentle at first, as if he was testing the waters. But something clicked inside both of you, years of suppressed feelings and denied affection finally bubbling over.
The kiss quickly grew more passionate, his hand moving from your chin to the back of your neck, pulling you even closer to him.
The feeling of his lips against yours was electric, a wave of emotions crashing over you. Your hands moved of their own accord, grabbing the front of shirt, pulling him closer while desperately kissing him back.
He responded enthusiastically, his hands holding you tightly against him, the kiss getting more and more heated with each passing moment.
His tongue teased at your lips, asking for entry, and you let him in without hesitating. The kiss grew more intense, his hands moving to slide through your hair, his actions now filled with a hunger that you reciprocated.
It was all-consuming, years worth of suppressed feelings finally bursting free.
His arms were around you now, holding you tightly against his chest. One of his hands was tangled in your hair, the other was caressing your back, his long fingers drawing small circles on your spine.
The kiss was deep and searing, a tangle of lips and tongues, filled with years of pent-up desire. It was like coming home. You both pulled back to catch your breath your forehead pressed against his.
He looked at you, his breath ragged, his eyes darkened with a mix of passion and something akin to awe.
"Why-" he said between breaths, his hand still tangled in your hair. "Why the hell didn’t we do that years ago?”
You laughed, your own breaths still ragged, your heart racing in your chest. You placed a hand gently on his cheek, running your thumb over his lips.
"We were stupid" you whispered, a smile on your lips. "All those years, all the time wasted."
He chuckled, leaning into your touch. “I could have been kissing you for years and you had to go and wait so long.”
He moved a hand to your cheek, mirroring your gesture as he traced your features with his thumb. His touch was gentle, almost reverent.
"Still, it’s better late than never." He added, a hint of a smile on his lips. you put your head on his shoulder. his hand around you waist. As you cuddled on the bench together watching the sunset. your heart racing at a speed you couldn’t even comprehend. You’d finally gotten the man of your dreams. The man you wanted for so long. almost instinctively you nuzzle your head into his neck and you say the words “I love you.”
He froze for a moment at your words, the atmosphere becoming even more intimate. It was silent for a moment, before he spoke, his voice a soft whisper in your ear.
"I love you too."
His words were simple, but they sent a rush of warmth through your body. He held you tighter, his chin resting on your head. The world around you almost faded away, the only thing that matter was the two of you now.

university ghoul dynamics part 2 of 2. I blame @skele-bunny and @everybodyshusband /aff this is about a student teacher relationship but they are both consenting adults and the age gap isn't drastic (think like 25&30)
non-binary, disabled young uni teacher rain with a fresh phd & audhd student aeon that picked a random degree so his parents would fuck off
aeon with parent issues, completely disinterested in all his classes, but smart, so he passes it all anyways. barely, but he does—he'd be a top student if he gave it more than the bare minimum
there's one class that he pays attention to, since the first meeting. a non-binary teacher 30 years younger than the rest of his professors and not much older than aeon himself. someone actually just...cool, with a gentle yet commanding voice that's just captivating and makes even the stubborn students just want to listen. rain seems passionate about their class, too, which makes it even more pleasant to listen because it’s obvious they actually want to be there and teach, and it’s not just a job they have to make a living
rain's class is the only one aeon attends regularly and actually listens to a little bit, but he's still aeon and he’s still on the spectrum. it's not like he's suddenly a passionate academic just because one of his teachers is cool. rain notices, ofc, and they also consider themself cool and approachable so they decide to talk to aeon about it. maybe he has some problems, maybe he has a learning disability, etc. rain intends to help, if they can
something something it turns out aeon never had anyone caring for him or his needs in any capacity and it's not long before he becomes strangely attached to rain. they're aware and they know they should stop it and definitely not let it go any further but...but there's something about helping aeon that kinda. fulfills them
when they were a student they had a lot of problems because of their gender identity and disability and they didn't have any teachers that would care and it made them hate university despite being so passionate. they took a gap year or two before their masters and phd and ended up loving it all over again but they still remember how it felt not being taken seriously and they don't want that for aeon
a few months and they totally fall in love. it's awkward and neither of them knows what to do about it and neither of them is even sure that the other feels the same and the simple fact that they're a teacher and a student, even if they're both adults with a not-so-big age difference
I think aeon always packs slowly at the end of the classes, lingers so he can be the last one to leave and maybe exchange a few words with rain. next semester aeon signs up for additional classes the moment he sees some of them are rain's
I think there would be a moment when like. aeon is slow as usual in getting out of the class. rain has a bad pain day and struggles with carrying some of their stuff and they end up dropping it. aeon is on his knees picking it up in a second and rain will not admit what aeon on his knees before him and looking up at them with a sweet smile and puppy eyes did to them
maybe rain invites him for coffee one time. to discuss his academic future, of course. nothing else. right?
they both feel it's so wrong but it reaches a point where they just. can't not be together
aeon not telling rain how far from university he actually lives and getting up at like. 5am to come pick rain up when they're in a flareup and can't get to uni themself but have to come teach
aeon throwing a tantrum when the elevator isn't working even though rain insist it's fine
(stolen from felix) rain emailing aeon telling him to come to office hours to talk, and when aeon gets there it turns out rain just wanted to say that they're...look, they're not disappointed, but they can see that aeon's not living up to his full potential, and they'd really like to see him working a bit harder in class if he's able to. they're more than willing to help him out with certain concepts and accommodate his needs to allow this to happen etc etc. and aeon doesn't really know why (we do though, it's the parental issues) but something about rain at their desk, peering over their round wire-rimmed glasses and telling him to work harder is doing something for him and he doesn't know how to feel about it. something about how gentle they are about it too, like they're not angry, they just want to see him work harder and be true to his abilities and they're genuinely willing to help him achieve that

Part 2: You made me feel I've nothing to hide
After work, instead of heading home, you rushed straight to the nearest boutique to buy yourself a new dress for tomorrow night. The butterflies in your stomach were doing somersaults and you felt as if you could spontaneously burst into song like in those cheesy musicals your former college roommate was so obsessed with.
You knew the employees were all looking at you oddly as you constantly giggled to yourself like some lovesick schoolgirl while you perused through endless racks of the latest fashion. Of course you knew you were acting ridiculous--crazy--but wasn't that what attraction or, dare you say, love did to you?
Besides, you wanted tomorrow to go perfectly. In your eyes, Steven Grant was already perfect--perfectly imperfect or imperfectly perfect, you didn't know or care which was which. You just knew that you liked him. A lot.
And it relieved and pleased you to the moon and back that he actually felt the same! So, who cares what anyone else thought?
You just hoped that after tomorrow, Steven would like you enough to go on another date. And another. Then another...
Maybe you were looking--wishing--too far into the future, but you swore you could almost hear wedding bells chiming in the distance.
God, is this what happens after being a total virgin for twenty-something years? There was absolutely nothing wrong with being a virgin, but your insecurity bugged you. What if you weren't at all what Steven expected?
But another part of you, a positive ray of sunshine, clobbered all your doubts. For once, you were going to be brave! You were going to take a leap of faith! You were going to control your life!
Because, in the end...it was worth it. Steven was worth it. Sure, you've experienced various crushes throughout your life, but not like this. Not with Steven. This felt more...serious. Adult.
It felt as if right from the get-go crossing fates with "Steven with a V", your life was about to change--for the better.
Of course you were afraid, and yet you've also never been more sure of something in your entire existence. You've been waiting this long and you're glad you did, and now you were ready to jump head first (and head over heels) into whatever adventure was in store for you--with Steven.
You then squealed excitedly when you spotted the perfect dress, ignoring the judgmental stares other customers shot you as you hurriedly grabbed it like a child in a toy store.
Yes, tomorrow was going to be a dream come true.
♡•••🌙•••♡
You arrived at the restaurant thirty minutes early. It was totally embarrassing how eager you were, but you couldn't help yourself. Though at least with how early you were, you snagged a good table overlooking the restaurant's beautiful back garden strung with fairy lights and you can have some time to calm down before Steven came.
And you looked stunning. Your hair tumbled down in elegant waves, light makeup adoring your face and donning the contact lenses you rarely used. And the dress you bought fit like a glove; it was the shortest dress you now owned, stopping around your thighs. It was baby blue and had an off-the-shoulder style with some frills, and it hugged your figure just right.
You felt very self-conscious. You've always fancied clothes like this, but never actually had the guts to wear them--until now. Did it really suit you? But you couldn't deny that you were happy and, truly, isn't that all that mattered?
"Shall I get you started, ma'am?" A waitress snapped you back to reality and you shook your head.
"Not yet, thank you. I'm still waiting for my...date." The word made you blush furiously, as if sharing a dirty little secret.
The waitress smiled and nodded, leaving you by yourself once more as you sighed wistfully.
You took out your phone from your purse, checking the time. 6:45 p.m. Alright, not too long now. And you double checked that the address you texted Steven was correct, which it is.
You settled back in your chair, peering over the garden and giggling softly.
"I'm right here for you, Steven."
♡•••🌙•••♡
"It's about time, innit?" Steven murmured, glancing over anxiously at his wristwatch for the umpteenth time. It was already eight p.m., a whole hour past your meeting time (not to mention he arrived embarrassingly early). And he was just informed by one of the servers that the restaurant was closing in thirty minutes, to which a pitiful look was also casted to him.
"It's not 'about time', Steven. It's late." Marc gruffly pointed out, Steven seeing Marc's reflection glaring back at him from the shiny silver flower vase set in the middle of the table. "Face it: she's NOT coming."
"Don't you dare say that." Steven's voice was barely above a whisper, but there was a certain edge to it that one would normally not hear from the soft man. "Y/N would never do that. Not her. She's just running late, I'm sure. Traffic and all."
"Oh, please, we both know that even the traffic here doesn't take this long." Marc scoffed. "Stop kidding yourself, Steven. She's. NOT. Coming."
Steven frowned, and with a shaky hand he pulled out his phone. He should've called you since way earlier. It was the logical thing to do, after all. But he was...scared. Scared that, maybe, a terrifying maybe, Marc was right.
He found your number and called you, pressing his phone to his ear as it began to ring. He didn't realize he was holding his breath until you finally picked up, voice groggy.
"Hello..?"
"Y/N..." Steven heaved a relieved exhale. "Hey, uh, I'm at the restaurant. Guess you got stuck in traffic?" He chuckled halfheartedly.
A long, dreadful pause. And then:
"Fucking EXCUSE me?"
Steven's eyes widened, having never heard you swear before. He was just about to ask what was wrong when you continued without skipping a beat.
"Are you playing with me, Steven? Is this what it is?!" You definitely sounded angry, but he didn't miss the faint sniffles coming from you. Shit, were you crying? What the hell was happening?
"How can you be such a...such a DICK?!" You shouted, causing him to jerk his phone a few inches away from his ear. "I fucking waited for you like a total idiot until closing time, you prick! You never showed and you never answered my calls! What the fuck can you POSSIBLY gain from toying with me, huh?!"
"W-Wait, I don't understand!" Steven was nearly hyperventilating, all the colour draining from his face and his mind running a mile a minute. "I-I'm here! Right now! D-Didn't we agree? Friday night, seven p.m.?"
You were dead silent. Steven was going to check if the call was still connected when you beat him to it.
"Steven... It's Sunday."
Steven froze. Then his eyes landed on Marc's reflection, refusing to meet his gaze and it clicked.
"Y/N." Steven said slowly, steadily, despite feeling like crying himself. His eyes were still on Marc, cold and pissed. "Please. I promise I have an explanation. I just... God, can we meet? Y/N, please, I'll come to you."
"No need." Tears threatened to spill from Steven's despondent eyes at your flat response, before you suddenly added: "I'll come to you. You said you were at the restaurant, right? Stay there."
You ended the call, and Steven flared at Marc--no longer caring if other people perceived him as a lunatic fighting with himself.
"Why the fuck would you do that, Marc?"
"Steven..." Marc struggled to find the right words, and the asshole actually had the audacity to look ashamed. "Listen, she's nothing but a distraction--"
"You always think you know better, yeah?" Steven laughed humourlessly. "A distraction? YOU stop kidding yourself, Marc. This is not just your life, but mine. And it's about fucking time you stop being such a selfish bastard!"
"Um, sir?" Steven winced, greeted by a baffled waiter. "We'll be closing soon, so I'm gonna have to ask you to leave if you're not ordering anything."
Humiliated and repeatedly babbling apologies, Steven abruptly sprang out of his chair and dashed outside. He sighed deeply and collapsed listlessly on the ground, finally allowing the tears to fall.
He vaguely heard footsteps approaching until he saw a pair of worn bunny slippers in front of him. His eyes heavily dragged upwards, finding you staring back at him with an unreadable expression and breaths coming out in ragged pants.
"Y/N!" Steven jumped up, surprised you actually came despite the way he--the way Marc--treated you. Your bloodshot eyes and the dried tears on your cheeks only made him feel even shittier, much more fucked up than any beating he suffers on a mission.
Because at least with those, he can be confident that he and the boys would win no matter the challenge. But with you?
He had everything to lose.
Your hair was a total mess; glasses slightly crooked and you were in your pyjamas, a matching set of a purple tank top and shorts with stars and moons. The only thing you had covering you was a purple silk robe, drawing it closer to your chilly body as your eyes narrowed at Steven.
You should be mad at him, and you were. Still, despite everything, you hopped on to the first bus you saw and scrambled the rest of the way here as fast as you could.
But now that you were here...what in Khonshu's name were you going to do? You could scream at him with all the pain you haven't had the pleasure to release like you did on the phone, but you'd just be wasting your breath. Then again, he wasn't lying. He really is here. And it confused you more than anything.
And seeing him like this, looking so...sad. Well, it made you sad. Him miserably clenching onto a heart shaped chocolate box, fat globs of tears cascading down his cheeks as he gawked at you with his pretty doe brown eyes.
You raised your hand, and Steven shut his eyes as he braced himself for the slap he very much deserved--only to be met with your soft palm, wiping away his tears tenderly.
"Explain to me, Steven."
♡•••🌙•••♡
The travel to Steven's apartment was spent in deafening silence, but it brought upon a strange sort of comfort. Unconsciously, you hugged Steven's black jacket that he had offered you earlier even closer to your much smaller frame. It soothed your nerves, being completely enveloped in his smell; fresh soap with a hint of musky cologne.
Once you reached his unit, you couldn't help but smile. It was just so...Steven. It was a bit messy, but a good kind of messy. You didn't really know how to describe it, but it warmed your heart especially when you saw a giant fish tank with only one goldfish.
"Cuppa tea?" Steven asked to which you shook your head, facing him fully.
"No. I'm a 'get over it' kinda girl so whatever your explanation is, I'd rather we just nip it in the bud." You huffed before you halted, biting your lip. "Oh, uh, sorry... Of course, if you wanna have tea, you can. It's your home, after all."
Steven laughed, his first real laugh that entire day. "Are you always this nice to blokes you should be mad at?"
"Only if they are really into Egyptology and have beautiful brown eyes and gorgeous curls." You rolled your eyes though you couldn't suppress your grin before you cleared your throat, getting a hold of your stupid giddy self. "Now, explain."
Steven's demeanour instantly shifted, serious now and quite uneasy. But he nodded and gestured towards the couch. You walked over and plopped down, Steven sitting next to you and keeping a respectful couple inches between the two of you.
He looked down at the ground, carefully considering his words before meeting your gaze solemnly. "Have you ever heard of dissociative identity disorder?" You nodded, previously learning about it in Psychology class and researching about it due to personal interest. "That's...what I have. I'm an alter within a system, and there are two others--Marc Spector and Jake Lockley."
"Am I correct to assume that when you asked me out...it wasn't actually you?"
Steven blinked, rather startled that you were taking this so well. "Yes. Jake was the one who asked you out."
"Was he also the one who didn't show up for the date?"
"No, that would be Marc." He grumbled. "And listen, I'm truly sorry about him. He's a right twit. It may not have been me who didn't show up, but that absolutely doesn't excuse the hurt it caused you. I am so, so sorry, Y/N."
Your brows furrowed, mulling over this new revelation. But...you believed him, especially when it explained all those times you secretly caught Steven muttering incoherently to himself or staring at his reflection and quietly reacting to something. You were curious about more, of course, but Steven didn't have any reason to lie about such a serious matter. And if he was lying, there were plenty of other things he could say. But the way he acted, and just the look in his eyes--he knew the risks of opening up to you, but he did it anyway.
You clasped his hands in yours, sighing. "I know I look calm right now, but trust me, I'm freaking the fuck out." You chuckled, and Steven felt safe enough to join you. "But... I trust you, Steven. And I believe you. Tell me one thing, though. Are you...into me? Like, at all?"
"Of course I am!" He replied in a flash, making you both pause before erupting into easy laughter. "Why would you even have to ask that, love?"
"It's just... Well, if Jake was the one who asked me out, it made me wonder if you really did like me." You mumbled, looking away.
Steven gently grasped your chin, tipping your face back towards him. "I've liked you since the day we met, Y/N. In your pink skirt and the cute little pigtails you had." He smiled, eyes so amorous and gleaming with sincerity. "Truth is, I've wanted to ask you out since forever. I'm just not as...forward as Jake is."
"And that's fine. But hey, we gotta thank him 'cause Lord knows I'd just spiral into a panic attack if I ever made the first move." You chuckled. But it gradually died down as Steven continued to stare at you, and you never thought you would ever have someone look at you the way Steven did; as if you were precious treasure hidden within a sacred tomb.
Slowly, ever so slowly, your body started moving of its own accord. You were leaning closer, closer, closer--a mere breath away from his lips before he piped up.
"I'm also Khonshu's Avatar!"
"Say what?"
"Um, well, you see--" He stammered, mentally slapping himself.
'Don't say anything, Steven.' Marc warned, and it took all of Marc's willpower not to seize control and actually slap Steven.
But it was too late now. Steven already said too much, but he wanted to be honest with you. Utterly so. And since you wanted to nip this in the bud, now was the best time more than anything.
"Erm... You've seen the news, yeah?" He didn't grant you the chance to respond as he rambled. "Masked vigilantes... Moon Knight and Mr. Knight? They're actually...Marc and I."
"Steven, this is--"
"I'll show you, Y/N. I'll summon the suit."
"Summon the soup? What is happening--"
Steven stood up, and a split second later there was a whirl of white. And sure enough, there was none other than one half of the mysterious heroes you've been seeing a lot on the news recently; his glowing white eyes locked with yours, crisp ivory suit and batons clutched tightly in his hands.
"Look, I know this is a lot to take in--"
"Handsome..." You blurted out before you can restrain yourself.
"Huh?" Steven blushed underneath the mask, and you were the same as your cheeks tinted crimson. Then you rose from the couch, closing the gap between you two and removing his mask.
His curls stuck every which way and his eyes were as wide as the full moon, making you giggle. "You're so handsome, Steven. And yeah, this is a fucking lot to take in. To be honest, a part of me is still wondering if this is all just a dream." You reached up, caressing the side of his face sweetly and smiling. "But...thank you. Thank you for being honest with me."
His batons dropped to the floor, trembling hands hesitantly settling on your hips. You noticed his Adam's apple bob as he looked down at you, tears once again glistening in his eyes. Happiness, relief, adoration--how can so many exhilarating emotions crash over him all at once?
"Can I be more honest?" He whispered, resting his forehead against yours as he gazed deeply into your eyes. "I...want you to stay with me."
Your cheeks hurt from how impossibly wide your smile has stretched, wrapping your arms around his neck and nuzzling his nose with yours.
"I'm staying whether you like it or not, Steven with a V."

After the project was over, there wasn’t much of an excuse for me to see Grayson. But luckily, Gigi was shipping us together so hard that she created lots of helpful excuses in order to create interactions. Except I wasn’t so good at the ‘creating interactions’ part. I couldn’t bring myself to look at the guy, let alone start a full conversation. That’s why at school, when me and Gigi were on lunch break, she sat me down and told me we had to discuss something.
“You need to talk to him more,” she says, staring me dead in the eye.
“I am trying,” I reply, sounding too unsure for it to be true.
“Liar,” she pokes her tongue out.
“Okay but isn’t it going to be super obvious if I just start having conversations with him,” I try to reason with her.
“No,” she shrugs as I’ve just asked her if the sun is green.
“Gigi have you ever talked to a guy before,” I ask her.
“That is offensive,” she gasps, fighting a smile.
I roll my eyes, “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Besides the point,” she announces, “you need to talk to him.”
She brings is back to the topic I was trying to change the subject from. Annoyingly there seems to be no way out.
“What about? I don’t even know what he likes,” I groan, “maybe we’re just not meant to be-“
“No I refuse,” Gigi interrupt, putting her palm on my face, “I want to be a bridesmaid at this wedding so I’m going to make it happen.”
I sigh as a comfortable silence falls upon us. I wish I had the courage to talk to him like a normal human but I’m so conscious of what he might think of me that I always seem to back out. There’d been times when I’d been close, for instance last night. We walked past one another and we smiled at each other and I almost turned around and mentioned something he’d said at dinner, but my heart was racing too much and the nerves took over.
“Swimming,” Gigi suddenly decrees.
“Huh?” I say, still partly in my thoughts, trying to process what she said and why.
“He likes swimming,” she clarifies, with a hand gesture.
Now that explained his body.
“Swimming?” I raise my eyebrows, attempting to figure out how I could possibly bring up swimming in a one on one conversation with him without sounding like an absolute stalker psycho.
“Don’t judge your husband,” she replies, slapping my arm lightly.
“Gigi,” I laugh, shaking my head.
“Look he’s coming for dinner tonight and I am going to make sure you guys are left in a room alone together so you have to talk,” she explains.
“That sounds really creepy out of context but thanks,” I grin.
This girl was a life saver. I mean she was literally making my, albeit questionable, love life actually happen. I couldn’t ask for anyone better. I make a mental note to buy her the worlds’ supply of chocolate covered pretzels when I get enough money.
“You’re so welcome,” she smiles, booping the tip of my nose as the bell rings.

Gigi stays true to her word, later that day I’m at her house. We’re just been hanging out as usual when she suggests we go downstairs into the living room. Coincidentally Grayson is there, looking gorgeously concentrated as he takes notes on something or other. We sit down on the sofa together, books in hand, when Gigi abruptly gets up. This is it. This is the moment.
“Sorry,” Gigi says to me quickly, “I’ll be back in a mo.”
“Okay,” I nod.
She gives me a wink before she leaves completely. I open my book. I need a distraction. I look down at the pages, the words all mushing into one giant mess. I can’t concentrate when Grayson is around. My hands are sweating and my leg is bouncing up and down uncontrollably. The silence is deafening. I need to start conversation but he looked so concentrated when I walked in. Would he be annoyed? Weirded out? Or would he not care at all? I stare harder at the mess of letters on my page praying for a drop of courage to emerge to the surface.
“What book are you reading?”
My heart almost stops there and then. His voice startles me so much that I my body jerks forwards and a small gasp escapes my lips. I look up to see Grayson looking at me, at me.
“Sorry, did I make you jump?” he asks gently, his tone laced with concern as his eyebrows pinch together
“Just a little,” I laugh nervously, before flipping to the cover on the book, “it’s Pride and Prejudice,”
A smile tugs at his lips, I’ve never seen a man so beautiful when he smiles, “it’s a very good book.”
“You’ve read it?” I say, surprised as my eyebrows fly to forehead.
“Multiple times,” he nods smoothly.
I smile, “woah.”
There’s a few beats of silence before he offers, “you know if you ever wanted to maybe talk about your opinion on it, I’d be happy to-“
“Really?” I cut him off before he can even get his sentence out, being too shocked he’d even ask to keep myself from blurting out a reply.
“Of course,” he says, a small smile playing on his lips.
“That would be really nice,” I reply, hoping my blush wasn’t as prominent as if felt, “thank you.”
“Of course,” he says again, as if it should be natural thing for him to want to talk to me, as of it was no problem
Theres a few beats of silence. I count as the second stick by, trying to work up the courage to use my voice, to say at least something.
“Gigi tells me you swim,” I manage.
I want the ground to swallow me whole. Murder me, murder me, murder me. Why did I say that and why did I say it so awkwardly? There was nothing, I repeat, nothing, that could have worsened my situation.
Grayson looks back up from his avid note taking and replies with a sweet, “I do.”
I couldn’t sense if he was trying to end the conversation there or didn’t know how to continue it but he didn’t seem to be carrying on with his work and he didn’t break my eye contact, so of course my stupid mouth has to carry on blabbing.
“Do you like it?”
“Yes, I find it quite calming,” he explains, “it gives me space to think.”
“Oh it’s one of those hobbies for you,” I say, feeling less apprehensive about naturally talking.
He nods.
“I like hobbies like that,” I continue, “things that just take you away from reality because it’s too much.”
“Do you swim?” he asks me.
“I mean I know how to but not competitively or anything like that,” I shrug.
I stare at his facial expression which is unwavering. Why can’t I read him like I can read Gigi? Is he disappointed? Pleased? Does he even care? I’m running around in circles like a headless chicken.
“What do you like to do?” he says, his voice so soft.
He asked about me. I’m taken aback. He cares enough about me to ask what I like. Maybe I’m being slightly delusional but I don’t care, sometimes delusional thoughts are just better than reality. Then again, why would he have asked if he didn’t acre? Could it just be small talk or is he genuinely concerned? I ponder my answer for far too long.
I almost reply but Savannah walks in asking a question, “hey where’s Gigi, I’ve been looking for her everywhere?”
Typical timing, I mentally sigh. I abandon my conversation with Grayson turn to her instead.
“I don’t know,” I shrug, “she said she needed to go for a couple of minutes.”
“Where?” she says, gesturing with her hands.
“I don’t know,” I repeat, “she didn’t really specify.”
“That isn’t helpful,” Savannah groans.
I raise my eyebrows slightly, silently asking her if she was okay. She moves her head forwards slightly, letting me know she is actually okay. She has dark circles under her eyes and a restless look on her face. I can only assume she’s exhausted, annoyed and probably has some sort of headache.
“Have you really checked everywhere?” Grayson pipes up.
“Why? Think you can a better job?” she challenges, arms folded and eyes narrowed at him.
“I was only asking,” Grayson shrugs, “you know what Gigi is like, she-“
“Did someone say my name?” Gigi calls from what sounds like the hallway.
Footsteps approach slowly and Gigi appears behind her twin.
Savannah turns around, “Where have you been?”
“Bathroom,” she answers but I can tell she’s lying by the way she fidgets with her thumb and finger in circular motions.
“I checked there and you weren’t,” her sister replies, her tone rather short.
“Well I went to my bedroom first and then the bathroom, you must’ve just missed me,” Gigi shrugs. Lie number two.
“Okay,” Savannah says sceptically, narrowing her eyes.
***
After my encounter with Grayson on that day I haven’t seen him since. I’ve been over to Gigi’s but she’s explained how he’s been away with his brothers for a bit. I start to lose hope and feelings feel like they might be fading. But it’s the day Gigi invites me out to the beach for the day that things sort of began to change. She texts me the night before and tells me to pack for a beach day. At first I’m a little uneasy but I get over it as she hypes me up to come, via facetime. Now I’m locking up my house and getting into her car, beach day ready. Oh the power of Gigi Grayson’s persuasion.
“We’re going to have the best day in the world,” she assures me as we walk from my door to her car.
“You say that almost every day,” I chuckle lightly
“Can you just not be a Debbie Downer for one day?” she whines at me, her eyes almost glossy.
“I am not a Debbie Downer, I am a Rachel Realist,” I reply, scrunching up my nose playfully,
“That’s not a thing,” she insists, folding her arms across her chest.
“It is now,” I laugh.
“You look more like a Ruth,” Gigi snickers, proud of herself.
My face falls flat, “hey! That’s just mean!”
She sticks her tongue out, throwing her head back as she laughs even harder at my disapproval. When she eventually calms down she looks me in the eye and tells me, “oh and by the way there’s a little surprise for you in the car.”
“Why am I scared?” I ask her, my tone failing to stay steady.
“Have fun,” she sing-sings with a little wink.
“Gigi what did you do?” I say accusingly, worry creeping up into my thumping heart.
“Nothing, nothing, nothing,” she replies, flapping her arms about for me to get into the car, but I’m still too scared.
“Three nothings equal a something,” I exclaim, panicking slightly. A million and one possibilities race through my head.
“How?” she furrows her brows.
“It’s basic math,” I say.
“Just get in,” she groans, pushing me towards the door.
I have no choice. And even after a million and one possibilities, none had prepared me for the one infront of me. Grayson Hawthorne was in the drivers’ seat. My jaw physically drops and I stare at Gigi. She would be getting an earful later. I can’t believe he’s actually here and coming with us. He turns around in his seat to look at me. Grey eyes are pinned to mine and a small smile lands on his lips.
“Hello y/n,” he says gently.
I almost melt right there and then. What is this guy doing to me? How is he doing it to me? Why is he doing it to me? The butterflies in my stomach seem to have multiplied since our last encounter.
“Hi Grayson,” I smile back
“It’s good to see you again,” he replies.
I am internally screaming. I can’t believe he just said that. I can practically feel Gigi’s excitement radiating off of her. I try and keep my cool.
“You too,” I say, then look to the passenger seat, “hey Sav.”
“Hey,” she grins at me, “you okay?”
I nod.
“Let’s drive!” Gigi yells, as Grayson starts up the engine, “oooo can I do the playlist!”
“You packed the snacks,” Savannah complains, “I want to at least get a choice in something.”
“Yeah but your music taste is horrible,” she counters, with a sweet shrug.
“Is not!” she protests, throwing her hands in the air.
I can feel Gigi’s eyes burning holes into the side of my face, I look back at her. She stares at me expectantly.
“Why are you looking at me?” I ask slowly.
“Back up,” she explains.
I am about to be in the middle of a sister argument and I really don’t want to be.
“Hey I’ve never said anything about Savannah’s music taste,” I say, forcing part of a laugh.
“Yeah but I can hear you thinking it,” Gigi tells me
“No you can’t!” I reply, then turn to Savannah, “some of it is good.”
“Ha!” she grins at Gigi, jabbing a finger towards her face.
“I don’t know why you’re ha-ing Savannah, I should be the one ha-ing, she half agreed with me,” she replies, arms folded.
“And half agreed with me, stupid,” Savannah rolls her eyes.
“Do you have to be a peace maker between the two of us?” Gigi turns back to me.
“I am not getting in the middle of this,” I tell her, my hands up in the air as if I’ve been accused of a crime.
“Good choice.”
My heart flutters. Every time he talks my heart flutters. I bite back a smile as I catch his eye in the rear-view mirror. A kind eye, a sympathetic eye, a beautiful eye.
“Oh you can stay out of it Mr I only listen to depressing old man music,” Savannah scoffs, lowering her voice an octave or so.
“It’s called being classy,” he says, “you might be unfamiliar with the concept.”
“I would punch you if you weren’t driving,” she grumbles.
“And I would easily dodge,” Grayson replies.
“Guys were making y/n uncomfortable,” Gigi pipes up suddenly.
“I’m fine,” I say quickly and insanely awkwardly.
“She’s seen us fight before Gigi,” Savannah scowls, probably still bitter about the playlist comment.
“Not like this,” she replies, “let’s all just stop, I want a nice day.”
Silence hits us like a bus. A massive double decker bus. No one speaks for a full twenty minutes. The silence is awkward and uncomfortable and I don’t think anyone knows how to break it. All I know is I’m definitely not going to be the one to break it. Suddenly it becomes apparent that Grayson flicks the radio on, as music starts to play.
The drive is mostly smooth sailing from there and conversations pick up here and there. None of which have remotely argumentative undertones, thank the lords. Though at various points Gigi would stick her head out of the window, scream or sing, and then Grayson would tell her off for being so dangerous and explain how worrying it was. I think it is adorable, personally but I think I’m a little bias. Savannah talks a bit about her upcoming basketball tournament, it’s an important season apparently and me and Gigi agree to make every game. But unfortunately for me, the person who spoke the least was Grayson.
***
When we finally arrive at the beach and park the car, we all get out stretching our stiff limbs. That’s when I take Gigi’s arm and drag her off to the side, talking in a low enough tone so no one else can hear us. I want answers and I want them fast.
“You didn’t think to tell me!” I hiss.
“It needed to be a surprise,” she replies, knowing exactly what I’m talking about.
“I don’t like surprises,” I tell her.
“How can you not like surprises!” she exclaims, looking slightly offended.
“Gigi why would you do this?” I sigh, getting back on track.
“I’m trying to help you out,” she says.
“This isn’t helping me out, it’s going to be awkward,” I groan.
“Just talk to him,” Gigi shrugs, as if it’s the easiest thing in the world.
“I can’t, I actually can’t,” I explain.
“You’re going to,” she orders, “today.”
“Gigi, no.” I reply, a warning undertone laced into my voice.
“y/n yes, “she says firmly, “you know nothings ever going to change if you don’t make it happen.”
“Why isn’t he trying to make it happen?” I retort, arms folded.
“Because you’re not and he might think you’re uninvested,” she suggests.
“And what if he’s uninvested,” I press on.
“I don’t think he is,” Gigi tells me, “but it’s the best way to find out.”
“Gigi!” I exclaim, almost slapping her arm.
“Look if anything just have fun okay, we’re at a beach,” she shrugs.
She had done all of this for me, to help me and my sorry excuse for a love life out. And I didn’t mean to seem ungrateful but this is probably the worst thing for my love life right now. I couldn’t pull myself together around him. He makes me so nervous, so self conscious… but I suppose now I have no choice.
“You two coming?” Savannah shouts over her shoulder.
“Yeah!” I reply, beginning to walk over.
Gigi follows and we make it to the boot of the car. I look for my bag but can’t seem to find it. I do a double take but still can’t seem to spot it.
I begin to ask, “where did my-“
“I’ve got it.”
Tingles run down my spine. I don’t understand how just his voice can do this to me. It’s not normal. I turn around to see Grayson carrying several bags in his hands including mine. Our eye meet suddenly and I want to say so many thing yet each set of words just die in my throat.
“You don’t have to-“ I say.
“It’s okay,” Grayson replies.
“Seriously I don’t mind,” I reassure him, extending my hand out.
“I’ll carry it down for you,” he tells me.
“Are you sure?”
“Very,” he responds, a kindness in his eyes.
“It’s kind of heavy though,” I say, recalling how much I’d shoved into one tiny bag.
“All the more reason for you not to break your shoulder carrying it,” he grins at me.
“What if you break yours?” I say tilting my head to the side.
“It wouldn’t be the first time,” he shrugs simply.
I gape, wide-eyed, very tempted to ask for more details on the story but before I can he continues.
“Besides it would be worth it.”
I think I almost faint, I feel my knees go slightly weak. I really hope he meant it how I thought he meant it. It would be worth it, worth breaking his shoulder… for me? It is stupid, it’s utterly stupid that I’m overanalysing five stupid words. I shake my head and collect myself.
“Can we get coffee?” Gigi skips along the pathway.
“No,” Grayson says almost immediately.
“I fancy some too though,” Savannah says, “y/n?”
“I could do with some coffee,” I agree.
“Three over one,” Gigi says in a sing-song tone, booping the tip of her brother’s nose.
“You’re getting decaf,” Grayson tells her, sternly.
They continue a little argument, backs and forth like a ping pong game. Me and Savannah share a look stifling our giggles behind our hands. As we walk behind, I admire Grayson. I can’t help it. He radiates this beauty, that’s so addictive that is struggle to look away. I’m still so embarrassed he felt the need to carry my things… was it just a nice gesture or did he think I was weak or maybe I was just reading too much into the whole affair. My mind races with so many different thoughts, so fast and so hard I’m beginning to get a headache.
We arrive outside a drinks place and find a place to sit down. After the long drive there’s nothing more I wanted than a cold coffee. Not to mention I’d forgotten to make my morning cup this morning. My mind finally decides to slow down to a dull humming. A waitress comes over and takes our orders and I notice Grayson telling her quietly to make sure Gigi’s was decaf as her and Savannah get into deep conversation.
Then Grayson turns to me, “you know they’re starting to show old movies at the movie theatre on Saturday nights.”
“Oh that’s so cool,” I reply.
“This weekend the 1940s version of Pride and Prejudice is being screened,” he tells me.
“No way!” I exclaim my eyes wide with excitement.
He nods, with a small smile. The waitress comes around with the coffees and as soon as she’s gone I return the conversation.
“I just finished it yesterday,” I explain to him.
“And…” he asks, prompting me.
I pause for a moment and then say, “I’m conflicted.”
“And why is that?” he wonders aloud.
“Because I loved every second of it and now it’s just over,” I groan, “gone. I can never relive the first time again.”
“You can’t relive the first time but you can relive the moment again,” he says, “and it’s not over forever.”
“How so?” I reply.
“Stories shall forever continue in our minds and as long as we have the power to tell them they never really go anywhere,” Grayson says, almost wistfully.
“Huh…” I murmur, trailing off slightly, “I’d never thought of it like that before.”
“You guys should go together,” comes Gigi’s voice, surprising me quite suddenly.
“What?” I ask, more quickly and loudly than I’d intended.
“The Pride and Prejudice movie one Saturday,” she clarifies, “you both seem really into it.”
Grayson looks slightly alarmed and replies, “I’m sure y/n is very busy and I don’t want to pressure her into-“
“No I’m free, completely free,” I cut him off. I mentally face palm as I realise how horribly obvious that sounded. Gigi shoots me a knowing grin which I choose to kindly ignore.
“Oh… then would you like to go with me this Saturday?” Grayson asks, looking me dead in the eye.
His eyes are so distracting if the question hadn’t been so important I most likely would’ve forgotten how to answer.
“I would love to,” I smile, trying not to sound too eager.
We lock into this trance of staring at one another. Magnetised by our eyes, unable to be the first to look away. The smile on my lips was beginning to make my jaw ache but I didn’t cadre stop. Only an idiot would give up a moment like this.
“Hey y/n, I need the bathroom, come with me real quick?” Gigi asks, prodding my shoulder.
“Of course,” I nod, grabbing my bag, finally tearing my gaze away.
“We’ll get set up down at the beach,” Savannah says, nodding to Grayson.
“What about the coffees?” Gigi pouts.
“We’ll take them, don’t worry,” Savannah rolls her eyes with a smile.
As soon as we’re out of earshot and view, Gigi holds my hands a squeals and so do I. After little jumping up and down, hugging and screaming and a lot of weird looks we take a second to absorb what just happened.
“I’m going to a movie with Grayson this Saturday,” I finally say it out loud, the reality actually hitting me for the first time. I didn’t realise how in shock I’d been until now.
“It’s basically a date,” Gigi says.
“Literally,” I shrug, ignoring we’re completely delusional.
“I think he likes you,” she sings, giggling a little.
“That’s because you want it to happen,” I sigh.
“No I saw him looking at you,” she tells me.
“Well yeah, I was speaking to him,” I deadpan.
“No, when you weren’t looking at him dummy!” she exclaims, rolling her eyes melodramatically.
“You sure?” I ask her, my voice small and uncertain.
She nods enthusiastically.
“Gigi I can’t thank you enough,” I gush, a sudden surge of gratitude coming over me.
“Why?” she replies, looking very confused.
“You literally made it happen, you’re the reason I’m going out with him on Saturday,” I explain, suddenly regretting being so mad at her earlier for inviting Grayson as a surprise.
“All in a days work,” she winks at me.
“I will name my firstborn child after you, to show my gratitude,” I say.
“Awwwwhhh a little Gigi Hawthorne,” she says, putting her hand over her chest.
“A little Gigi Hawthorne.” I confirm, “hopefully anyway.”
We decide that we probably should get back to the others now and make our way down onto the beach together, laughing so hard we struggle to keep ourselves up right or walk in remotely straight lines. People give us strange looks but our bellies are aching and our lungs are dying far too much for us to care.
“Can you see them?” I ask, short of breath from wheezing.
“No…” Gigi says, giggling.
“Oh there’s Grayson,” I say, spotting our beach towels and umbrellas set up, with Grayson lying under them.
“Of course you spotted him,” she teases me.
“Shut up!” I exclaim, slapping her arm.
She laughs again as we make our way towards a very shirtless Grayson. I mean I’d seen him without a shirt before but today it was just different. The sun bounces off of his skin at a perfect angle, and the crown of blonde hair on his head glows.
“Quit gawking,” Gigi snaps me out of my trance, “that’s still my brother you know.”
“I am not gawking,” I hiss at her.
“Oh please, there’s drool running down the side of your mouth,” she tells me, pointing.
“Really?” I ask, self consciously wipe the side of my mouth.
Gigi winks at me laughing. I roll my eyes, unamused and slap the side of her arm.
“You’re not funny,” I say.
“I think that was hilarious,” she grins.
Grayson now spots us and waves us over. We both walk a little faster towards him. Savannah and Grayson had clearly already set up the umbrellas and beach towels perfectly, though I couldn’t see Savannah with him.
“What’s got you so smiley Gigi?” he asks, as we approach.
“Oh nothing,” she sing songs, smiling at me, “where’s Savannah?”
“I think she went to go and hire a surf board,” he explains.
“Ooooo I want to do that!” Gigi says, jumping up and down with excitement.
“It’s over there,” he points her into the right direction.
“Coming?” she turns to me.
“Yeah I’ll pass,” I scoff, imagining what an idiot I’d make of myself on a surf board.
“You’d be missing out,” Gigi tells me, poking my stomach.
“I’ll settle for missing out this time,” I reply.
“Okay then,” she shrugs.
Gigi rushes to take off her shirt and shorts, ready in her bathing suit and promptly runs off, far too excitedly as I sit myself down on a beach towel beside Grayson. I offer him a small smile which he returns with a wider one. I quickly look away as I shed my shirt and shorts, leaving me feeling very exposed in my bathing suit. When I look back towards him, I’m aware that he too has looked away. My cheeks heat up at the thought of him being so gentlemanly as to give me some privacy. I begin to rustle around in my bag in search for my sunscreen when a familiar voice freezes me in my tracks.
“Hey,” Grayson says.
I look up, happy I can now use sunburn as an excuse for my flushed cheeks, “hi.”
“How have you been?” he asks me shyly.
“Okay actually, yeah,” I nod, “how have you been, I haven’t seen you in a while?”
“Yeah I’ve been with my brothers a bit,” he explains.
“All okay?” I make sure.
He nods, “more than okay. My older brother is getting married.”
“Oh my gosh that’s amazing,” I beam.
He smiles, “they’re planning it for three months time.”
I put a hand over my heart, “that’s going to be lovely.”
“Yeah, he has a wonderful fiancée and I think he’ll be really happy,” he tells me, a real brightness in his eyes when he talks about them. It warms my heart.
“I’m glad,” I reply.
We fall into a silence and I grab the sunscreen out of my bag and begin to apply.
“Do you need some help?”
It takes everything in me to not let my jaw drop. I freeze mid movement and don’t know what to do with myself. There are fireworks going off in my brain and my heart is close to exploding.
“If you wouldn’t mind,” I mumble shyly, looking down.
“Of course not,” he smiles, holding out his hand for the bottle.
I pass it to him and turn around, delicately moving my hair out of the way. I feel his hands soothingly rub the liquid in, you’d think he was a professional masseuse. He’s so gentle and careful with my skin. I’m so glad he can’t see my face right now because I don’t think I’ve ever been more red.
“Sorry,” I say quietly.
“Why are you apologising?” he asks, as his hand slips under my strap.
I bite back a gasp to answer his question, “because you have to rub sunscreen into my back.”
“I didn’t realise it was an offensive affair,” he replies, a hint of amusement in his voice.
“You know what I mean,” I smile.
“I’m not sure I do,” he says, pressing for me to carry on.
“Is it not awkward for you?” I ask.
“No, I’m helping a friend out, nothing awkward about that,” he replies and I can hear the shrug in his tone.
Friend. The word echoed through my brain bouncing off every surface. It would torture me at every waking hour, replaying like a broken record. He said ‘friend’. But how else was he meant to word it, how else would I have worded it. But if he felt the same way to me as I did to him would he have still said ‘friend’. Why am I like this? Analysing every second word the guy says. I need to stop driving myself insane.
“I suppose,” I say, trying to not let my disappointment shine through as I turn back around to face him.
He hands me back the bottle, “about earlier, if you felt pressured into Saturday I’m not going to be offended if you don’t want to go.”
“No I do, really,” I say, “why? Did you not want to?”
And suddenly I was on edge, that ‘friend’ comment had really thrown me off and now I was second guessing everything he mentioned.
“No, I absolutely did,” he tells me, an honest look in his eyes, “but I was just making sure.”
“Thanks,” I smile sweetly.
I’m about to continue when Gigi appears in front of me, out of breath and slightly wet.
“What happened to surf boards?” I ask her, shielding my eyes from the sun.
“I fell off too many times and gave up,” she shrugs, “so you’re coming in the water with me now.”
“No I’m okay here,” I say, forcing a small laugh.
Gigi doesn’t even bother replying and instead grabs my arms and pulls me forwards, breaking out into a full on sprint towards the water. I try to drag her back but I’m too weak from laughing so hard, it’s like all of my limbs have gone to jelly.
“And now we go in,” she says, gripping onto my hands tighter.
“It’s gonna be cold!” I whine, taking a few steps back.
“Oh shush, you don’t know until you try,” she scolds me, bringing me back forwards.
I dip a my foot in and immediately retract, “I’ve tried, it’s cold.”
“Come in a little,” she pouts, “for me.”
I groan and oblige. After a few steps in I decide it isn’t as bad as I’d thought until we’re about thigh deep, then I want to turn around.
“No you can’t, we’re barely even in yet!” Gigi exclaims.
“I’m in enou-“
I don’t get to finish my sentence as I’m cut off by my own scream on surprise promptly followed by a face full of water. Trust Gigi to push me in. Before I come back up to breathe, I swim underneath her and tackle her legs so she too topples over. When I get to the surface I’m soaking and salty and highly unamused in contrast with Gigi’s bright eyes and giggles.
“See, wasn’t that fun?” she grins at me.
“No, I’m wet,” I grit through my teeth, trying to hide a smile.
“Well duh… it’s the sea,” she tells me.
I roll my eyes and the put a hand up to block out the sun’s glare. But two people catch my eye.
“Is that Savannah and… Grayson?” I question.
Two heads of golden hair, contrasting with the blue of the ocean, ride on surf boards, tackling waves with smiles on their faces. They look more like siblings than usual.
“Is he surfing? Did you know he could surf? He looks like a professional,” I babble suddenly.
“I didn’t know he could surf,” she says, “then again Gray can probably do any sport ever.”
“He definitely knows how to surf,” I reply, not being able to tear my eyes away from his precision and focus.
“Is that a green flag for you,” she teases, “are you into the surfer boys?”
“Oh put a sock in it,” I laugh, pushing her into the water.
She comes back up gasping for air and laughing, “hey!”
“Payback,” I shrug, “and I’ll do it again if you don’t shut it about my love life.”
“You were thanking me earlier,” Gigi grumbles at me.
“Not anymore,” I sing.
“So bipolar,” she rolls her eyes playfully.
“Shhhh I’m trying to watch!” I say, my eyes still fixated on Grayson.
“You mean stare at his abs,” she raises her eyebrow.
“Well they’re really nice too,” I reply, giving up on being in denial.
She wrinkles her nose, “my brother right there.”
“Hey you brought up the abs thing,” I defend.
“Because you’re staring at them!” she exclaims, looking very disgusted.
Before I can reply to her Grayson catches my eye and for a moment it’s just him there and no one else. He beckons me over with a hand.
“Was that at me?” I whisper to Gigi.
“Who else is he signilling at?” she asks.
We turn around simultaneously and see an old man behind us with a snorkel on. He shoots us a dirty look and we turn around, barely keeping it together. As soon as our eyes meet we start absolutely dying with laughter.
“I think it’s safe to say it’s you,” Gigi wheezes, holding her belly.
“I’m going to swim over,” I say once I’ve pulled myself back together.
“I thought you didn’t like the sea,” she challenges me.
“I do now,” I grin at her.
She shakes her head smiling, “I would be mad at you but I really want a Gigi junior.”
“Exactly,” I say, still trying to work out how I’m going to get out of calling my firstborn child Gigi.
“Don’t do anything naughty,” she winks at me, with a cheeky kind of smile.
“Gigi! We’re on a public beach and we’re not even a couple!” I exclaim, reminding her.
“You never know,” she shrugs
“What have you been reading?” I ask her, eyebrows arched and arms folded.
“Never you mind that,” she says, avoiding eye contact.
“Dirty romance again?” I giggle, poking her shoulder.
“Go get yourself a boyfriend,” she says, detracting from the conversation, “he’s waiting.”
I look over to Grayson who still has his gaze fixated on me.
“We’re coming back to this conversation later,” I tell her.
I don’t give her a chance to object as I dive into the water, out of my depth and swim over to Grayson. When I reach him a rest my arms on his surf board, keeping me afloat.
“Since when could you surf?” I look up.
“Since I was about ten,” he tells me, “my grandfather took me and my brothers.”
Beat.
“Come up, here.”
“On the board?” I ask.
He nods and I ungracefully attempt to clamber onto the surf board. I struggle up and the fall right back down, feeling like a world class idiot in front of Grayson.
He smiles softly at me, “need a hand?”
“Nope,” I grunt, slipping once again, “I’m fine.”
“Are you sure about that,” he chuckles, his head titled slightly sideways.
“Yes,” I say determinedly and then, “… actually no, can I have some help please?”
“Here,” he laughs, extending his hand, “grab onto my wrist, the grip will be stronger.”
I do as his says, holding on tightly to his wrists, I push upwards as he pulls me towards him. His hand slides around my waist, which was now exposed out of the water and he lifts me up onto the surfboard. Once he’s sure I’m on there, he slowly removes his hands. My waist tingles where his fingers have been and so does my face as it rises in temperature.
“Ever been on a surf board before?” he asks me.
“Is it that obvious?” I grin.
“No,” he laughs kindly.
I give him a look, my eyebrows raised, letting him know he doesn’t have to lie to me to make me feel better.
“Well maybe,” he says, a little sheepishly.
“How come you didn’t surf earlier then?” I ask him. He could’ve gone with Savannah and Gigi to hire a board but he chose not to, which made me curious to say the least.
“I didn’t want to leave you on your own,” Grayson shrugs.
My pulse quickens and my face lights up. But I play it cool, or at least I’d like to think I do.
“I’m a big girl, I can handle myself,” I tell him.
“I know but I didn’t want you to feel alone,” he says. He says it like he actually cares, like I actually mean something to him. And it feels magical.
“Thanks,” I say, “so what are we doing?”
“Paddling out, then we’ll stand up,” he explains.
“You’re joking,” I scoff. There is no way that I could possibly do that.
“The waves are babies on this beach,” he says, gesturing to the seemingly unthreatening waves.
“They’re still waves and may I remind you I’ve never done this before,” I reply, eyeing the water intently.
“There’s a first time for everything,” he murmurs.
“You surprise me with your spontaneity,” I hum in response.
“And you surprise me with your reluctance,” he replies.
“I’m not reluctant!” I defend.
He shoots me a pointed look as I sit there with my arms folded.
“I’m not reluctant,” I sigh before hesitating slightly, “…I’m just scared.”
“You don’t need to be scared,” he tells me, “I’ve got you. I’m not going to let anything happen.”
“Okay….” I say hesitantly, “what do we do first?”
“First we need to paddle out, so we have to lay down on the surface board,” he explains, showing me what to do.
I mirror his actions and slowly lay down on my belly beside him, as he lifts an arm and puts it over my shoulders, so he has one hand on each side of the board.
“Feeling good?” he checks.
“Good isn’t quite the word I’d use to describe whatever I’m feeling,” I reply, trying to steady the shake in my voice.
“Okay, now we’re going to paddle out,” he instructs, “you think you want to?”
“Yeah,” I breathe
Slowly and cautiously, feeling a little more comfortable with Grayson by my side, I help paddle out until it feels like we’re in the middle of the ocean. The middle of a vast expanse of salty blue water.
“You see the wave coming up now,” he says, his voice soothing and calm.
I hum in reply.
“We’re going to catch that one,” he explains.
“Okay.”
“I’ll stand first and then I’ll help you.”
I agree. He stands up with ease and good balance, like he’s done it a thousand times before. I presume he has.
“Do you trust me?” Grayson asks.
“Yes,” I say with no hesitation.
“Hold my hands,” he instructs me.
I take his hands in mine and hold them tightly, until my knuckles have gone white and my hand bright red.
“Stand up,” he tells me.
I shake my head, convincing myslef that there are at least eighty different ways to die right this second.
“Stand up, I’ve got you,” he reassures me.
“What if I fall?” I ask worriedly, my voice unfamiliar.
“Then I’ll catch you,” Grayson says, his eyes twinkling.
I stand up, wobbling a little. He catches me by the waist, his palm fitting perfectly in the dip, stabling me. Goosebumps raise on the surface of my skin and I can’t tell if it’s because I’m cold and shocked. Though my face feels a little too heated for it to be blamed on the cold.
“Spread your arms out,” he tells me.
I slowly spread my arms out and his hands don’t leave my waist. It’s my very own titanic moment, though I hope if this is going anywhere it doesn’t have the same end result. And suddenly it’s just him and me in the middle of the ocean alone on a surf board and nothing and no one else matters.
“Ready?” he say into my ear.
“Ready.”
The wave is not a big as I’d thought it would be and we easily ride it. I even find myself laughing and slightly enjoying myself. That lasted for the grand total of five whole second. Then I slip off into the water. I’m quick to kick my way to the surface and grab ahold of the surfboard. Grayson is on his knees looking a little pale, worry lines creasing his forehead.
“Are you okay?” he rushes, lifting me up onto the surfboard.
“Yeah,” I cough, sea water residue in my mouth.
“Are you sure?” he asks worriedly, checking my pulse, vision, hearing and mobility. He placed a gentle finger under my chin and tips my head back.
“I’m sure,” I chuckle, tilting my head back forwards, “but I think that’s enough surfing for me.”
“Understandable,” he nods, dropping his hand, “come on, let’s get back onto shore.”
Together we paddle back to shore, our bodies so close to each others it’s making me nervous. We spot Gigi waiting on the beach for us, looking excited. Before we get there Grayson turns his head towards me.
“You know I’m proud of you,” he says.
“Proud?” I ask trying to focus on the conversation and not how close our faces were.
“You gave surfing a go,” he says, “even though you were scared.”
“Well I had a good teacher,” I murmur, our noses almost touching.
“Thanks,” he smiles and… did he just blush?! I shake the idea out of my head, it’s probably just the lighting or sunburn.
We drift back onto the sand and Gigi runs up to us, beaming, “I found a crab and made friends.”
I shiver, “a crab?”
“He’s cute!” she exclaims
“He?” I ask.
“I’ve names him Bubblez with a ‘z’ at the end and I’m emotionally attached,” she tells me.
She looks at Grayson, her eyes wide and hopeful. A pleading look on her face.
“You’re not keeping the crab as a pet,” Grayson deadpans.
“How did you know I was going to ask?” she groans.
“Because you tried to adopt eight stray kittens and two stray dogs in the last month,” he sighs, running a hand through his hair.
Gigi replies but I don’t hear the rest of the conversation as someone grabs my attention.
“Hey y/n! Help me drag my board in!” Savannah hollers at me.
My brow furrow, Savannah doesn’t ask for help. Ever. Let alone to pull in a surf board, something I knew she’d done a thousand times and was plenty strong enough to do herself. I know something is up, I just can’t figure out what.
“Meet you back at the umbrellas,” I smile at Grayson.
“See you there,” he replies.
I walk over and grab one side of Savannah’s board, waiting for her to say something.
“I thought you didn’t like him,” she hisses, her voice low, almost dangerous.
“Me too,” I shrug, not even bother to hide it from her anymore.
“y/n!” she exclaims.
“Savannah!” I mock her back.
She rolls her eyes and tugs the board sighing, “please think it through.”
“That’s what I told you about Duncan and you didn’t,” I snap back
She flinches, like I’ve hit her across the face. She drops her side of the board so I drop mine. Guilt floods through me, but I push it back. This needs to be addressed. She readjusts herself and holds her head high.
“It’s different,” she says, trying to mask the tremor in her voice and failing.
“No it’s not,” I counter.
“Yes it is,” she insists, her eyes fiery.
“Grayson is a good person, he cares about you and Gigi-“
“How would you know?” she snaps, cutting me off.
“Because he’s told me,” I yell, “when he talks about you two his whole face lights up.”
She looks taken aback and loses her words for a minute so I take the opportunity to continue.
“He’s kind and gentle, why is it so bad that I want someone like that?” I ask her.
“Because…” she falters, “because if you break up whose side do I take.”
“Hold your horses there, we’re not even together,” I try to smile.
“Hypothetically then,” she says.
“His,” I shrug, “and I’d understand, he’s family.”
“So are you.”
My heart swells and a lump forms in my throat. I’d always been close to Gigi, we’d been like sisters from the start but Savannah and I took a lot of warming up before we became closer. We butt heads often, both being strong characters. Never once did I think she viewed me like a sister. I never thought I was of that importance to her, that significance in her life. But the fact that she does really hit me hard. And now I’m the one who’s lost her words.
“And I don’t want him to steal you from me,” she murmurs, her eyes a little glossy.
“Oh Sav,” I say, wrapping my arms around her, “you think I’d let him?”
“Love makes you do stupid things,” she chokes, “I should know.”
“Then if I do I give you full permission to slap me until i come to my senses,” I joke.
“Okay,” she laughs, wiping a few stray tears away.
“Come on,” I say, picking up my side of the board, “the others will be wondering about us.”
She nods and lifts the board as we begin walking again in a comfortable silence.
“y/n?” she says quietly, gently, almost carefully.
“Yeah?”
“I am really happy you like Grayson and if you guys do ever get together, I would be very happy for you,” she says, “I want you to know that.”
“Thank you,” I smile, “I still think you can do better than Duncan, but if you love him I’m behind you. Except if he treats you like dirt, then I’ll take him bungee jumping without the rope.”
She giggles a little and then grows serious, “he’s good enough to me.”
I don’t want to argue anymore so leave it at that. But my mind is screaming ‘is good enough, really enough?’ I’d have the conversation another day, I decide. We trek back up the beach to Gigi and Grayson who are sunbathing on the beach towels. As we approach Gigi sits up and flicks her sunglasses onto her head.
“What took you so long?” she calls.
“I’m like a donkey with mitten and couldn’t keep hold of the board,” I lie.
“Classic y/n,” she winks playfully.
“Hey!” I complain.
“I practically dragged the whole thing up here single handedly,” Savannah adds.
“Did not,” I mutter.
“I was thinking we should all go for ice cream,” Gigi says, “they have this ice cream bar where you can add as many toppings as you like for free.”
“I didn’t see that when we walked to the beach,” Grayson replied a, joining the conversation.
“Well you obviously have no priorities then,” his sister responds, offended and shocked.
“Priorities?” he questions.
“Beach priority number one, always look for the best ice cream spot,” she exclaims, “you should know this! Have I taught you nothing?”
“The only thing you’ve taught me is to not give you coffee or any drink that is remotely caffeinated,” he says and I try not to laugh.
“Talk to the hand,” Gigi grumbles at him, thrusting her palm into his face, then turning to me and Savannah, “now who’s coming for ice cream?”
“I’m in,” she shrugs.
“Same here,” I nod.
“I’ll come too,” Grayson sighs, but part of me think he actually wants to come.
Her face lights up and she jumps up excitedly, “yay, let’s go!”
We all walk back up the beach, following Gigi who is practically sprinting to show us the way. We eventually reach a little establishment she takes us into. It’s cool inside and all of the walls are brightly coloured, so much so it hurts my eyes a little. There’s every ice cream flavour one could imagine and even more toppings to choose from. Gigi looks like she’s in heaven. I grab a scoop of my favourite flavour and moderately top it with a few bits and pieces I liked the look of before I went and paid. I notice Grayson already standing there with his cone.
“Wow I didn’t pin you as a vanilla kind of guy,” I comment, my eyebrow raised in surprise as I analyse and severely judge his ice cream choices.
“What did you pin me as then?” he says, the corner of his mouth turned upwards slightly.
“I don’t know something like coffee or rum and raisin,” I shrug.
“Do you think I’m a sixty year old man?” he asks.
I laugh, almost choking on my own ice cream, “no, I just thought you had…“ I struggle for the right words, “…refined taste.”
“Saved yourself there,” he teases, “that was a close one.”
I poke my tongue out at him and then realise that maybe that was a little too comfortable of me. But he’s laughing so I take it as a good sign. As Gigi finishes paying for her extremely colourful icecream cone, she links arms with me and begins to tell me all about the extravagant flavours and extras she’s topped the ice cream with.
***
The four of us walk down the beach, eating our ice creams. Most of the way it is silent, with odd pockets of random conversation dotted about the place. Then we lay on the beach for hours, sunbathing, sleeping, just being. I haven’t felt this relaxed in a while. Occasionally one or two of us would leave to take another dip into the sea. Gigi and I are lying on a towel playing with the sand on either side of us, letting it tickle our fingertips as we gossip about school drama and hot celebrities. Though I don’t think there’s any celebrity I could’ve found to rival Grayson Hawthorne right now. I mean he’s just sat there looking gorgeous. How could someone be doing so little and still looking so gorgeous? I can’t wait to tell Gigi about all the things that had happened between us today, I’m practically ready to burst.
“Can we stay until sunset?” I ask, leaning my cheek on Gigi’s shoulder, “we have to see this beach at sunset.”
“We can stay until sunset,” she replies.
“What do we do now then?” Savannah asks.
“What we’re doing is fine,” I shrug.
“We’re not doing anything,” she says, bored.
The thing about Savannah is, she needs to move, like all of the time. The art of doing nothing and just relaxing, Savannah did not enjoy. I made a small bet with myself that she was going to suggest we okay a sport soon.
“Precisely,” I smile, lying back down, closing my eyes,
“What about a game of volleyball?” she suggests.
Won the bet then.
“That sounds good,” Gigi agrees.
“I’ll play,” I say, sitting back up and trying not to sound as halfhearted as I was.
“Gray?” Savannah asks.
“Alright,” he nods.
“Good you’re on my team,” she says.
“Hey! No fair!” Gigi exclaims immediately.
“Ouch Gigi,” I mumble.
“Sorry but we have to face the facts here,” she says with a hand up, “when’s the last time you played volleyball?”
“I don’t know,” I respond.
“Exactly our problem,” she says, “Grayson probably has a secret volleyball career and-“
“I do not,” Grayson interrupts her, sharply.
“And Savannah is good at all sports, our odds aren’t really looking good,” Gigi continues, completely ignoring Grayson’s comment.
“Then let’s just have fun,” I reply.
“Okay,” she grins at me, then looks to the other two and narrows her eyes, “prepare to go down!”
“Pssstt, Gigi,” I whisper-yell so the other can still hear, “I thought you just said we’re going to lose.”
“But we can lose with confidence,” she replies, optimistically.
I shake my head laughing, “you serve first then.”
***
After several volleyball matches of the other two beating us in every game bar one, which Gigi and I would not shut up about, we sit and watch the sunset, per my request. I sit on my beach towel in between Grayson and Gigi staring at the sky covered in shades of pink, orange and yellow.
“Isn’t it gorgeous?” I sigh.
“It is,” Grayson murmurs.
I glance towards him and he quickly looks away. Gigi nudges me and I turn to her, there’s a smile plastered on her face. I jerk my eyebrows together asking her to explain. She mouths ‘he was looking at you’. My eyes mirror the size of saucers as I silently ask her if she’s sure. She nods and my heart thumps loudly against my rib cage.
***
It’s only when the sun starts setting down and the sky is a little dark that someone suggests we pack up and head back to the car. By the time we finally reach the car the sky is fully dark and only lit with little twinkling stars.
“I’ll drive,” Grayson offers, once we’ve stuffed the boot full of our things.
“No you drove on the way here, so it’s my turn now,” Savannah says, nicking the keys.
“I call shotgun!” Gigi yells quickly.
I did the math. Me and Grayson were in the back together. Matchmaker Gigi strikes again. I open the door to sit down but before I can get in the seat Gigi dumps the sandy beach bag on the left seat.
“You wouldn’t mind sitting in the middle right?” she asks, loud enough for the others to hear.
In the middle. Right next to Grayson. Of course. I don’t know whether to smile or dread the experience, so I do both.
“Not at all,” I reply, situating myself in the middle seat.
I fumble around with my seatbelt to avoid eye contact with Grayson. Our bare legs are touching, sending the butterflies in my stomach fluttering and tumbling all over the place. Savannah start to drive and the bumps in the road just mean the two of us keep accidentally knocking each other. I try and hide the blush that keeps blossoming darker each time we touch but eventually give up. Another jolt, another spark of electricity shoots across my body. But by about twenty minutes into the drive exhaustion catches up on me, binding my mind together like some sort of kidnapper. I can feel my eyes drooping down and my head lolling to one side.
“Are you tired?” Grayson murmurs.
My heart throbs my chest, so much so I could hear the beating in my ears. I look up into his pools of grey and I nod, yawning a little.
“Lean on me,” he whispers.
“What?” I blurt out, as soon as I’ve processed the three words. I practically jump out of my seat, suddenly awake and alert, my eyes wide in shock.
“Lean on me,” he repeats, just as softly as before.
“Are you sure?” I ask him, still trying to mask my pure shock.
“Would I have asked if I wasn’t?” he replies smoothly.
“Thanks,” I say with a small smile.
Hesitantly I rest my head on his shoulder and attempt to relax. I breathe in. He smells divine. The cotton shirt he wears is so soft against my skin. He places his head on top of mine and I feel reality begin to slip away as darkened swallows me whole.
***
A jolt awakes me, but not fully as I’m still groggy. Even thought I’m half asleep I’m very aware I’m leaning on Grayson Hawthorne. I can smell him.
“Where are we?” I murmur sleepily.
“Go back to sleep,” he whispers, “we’re quite far from home.”
Comfortably situated, resting on Grayson, I listen I his soothing voice as my eyes slowly lull themselves shut again and sleep becomes my captor for the next couple of hours.
***
I wake up disoriented and confused. I’m no longer in the car. I can feel that my face is pressed up against someone’s chest. I open my eyes and realise that I’m in Grayson’s arms, bridal style.
“Oh my god,” I gasp, suddenly sitting up.
This puts Grayson off balance and I begin to fall to the ground very ungracefully. Luckily he catches my waist just before I hit the ground. His hands are strong and steady on the small of my back.
“Sorry,” I murmur embarrassed, as he helps me back up, his hands only dropping from my waist when I’m upright and completely stable. They linger for a little longer than necessary but I’m not complaining.
“No, my apologies I didn’t mean to drop you,” he says.
“If you didn’t I think you’d have a broken wrist,” I reply, “so it’s a good job you did.”
“Gigi suggested I carry you in as you were asleep,” he explains suddenly.
“Did she now?” I say, almost smiling. What would I do without my Gigi?
He nods and then passes me my key, “she found them in your bag.”
“Good to know my best friend respects my privacy and dignity,” I grin, a little sarcasm playing on my tongue.
“Of course,” Grayson plays along.
“Well thanks for letting me use your shoulder as a pillow and for carrying me to the door,” I say, a little awkwardly.
“No problem,” he smiles, “should I pick you up from here on Saturday?”
“Are you sure?” I ask him, “I don’t want it to be any trouble, I can just take the bus.”
“Of course I’m sure,” he nods, “maybe we could go to dinner together before?”
“I’d like that very much,” I beam, my cheeks heating up.
“I’ll get Gigi to pass me on your number incase I need to contact you,” Grayson suggests.
“Yes, I’ll get her to do the same for me,” I agree.
“Got any books on the go since Pride and Prejudice?” he asks me, continuing the conversation, making me very happy.
“Haven’t had a chance,” I sigh.
“Think you can wait another day to start one?” he asks me.
“Why?”
“I don’t know,” he grins, “but can you?”
“I think so,” I say sceptically, “what do you have planned?”
“You’ll see,” he replies, a little mischievously.
“When Gigi says that I get scared,” I laugh.
“Well I’m not Gigi,” he replies, “I’ll see you Saturday then.”
“See you on Saturday.”

I didn’t realise how long this part was until I’d written it. I actually had to cut PART 3 in half because it was so long but hope you enjoyed this!! Thanks for reading my loves 🤍🤍 this fic is the only thing keeping me sane waiting for TGG
btw I know nothing about surfing or surf boards so don’t come at me.
and a quick thank you to anyone who participated in my little Grayson icecream poll, you’ll notice the results have been put to good use… though I don’t personally agree that it would be vanilla.

Kieran Part 1: It’s All About Strength
I’m a longtime Pokémon fan who happily plays through every mainline game, but I’ve never been more than mildly fond of the occasional character here and there, because Pokémon isn’t much for deep and nuanced character writing. Then I played The Teal Mask DLC and came out of it with many, many Feelings and Thoughts about Kieran – enough so that it warrants a full, juicy analysis about all of his subtleties and issues. I never expected I’d write one of these character analysis rambles of mine on a Pokémon character of all things, but here we are. Colour me surprised and impressed.
For anyone reading this in the future: this was written before The Indigo Disk came out and therefore only talks about the events of The Teal Mask. Assuming The Indigo Disk doesn’t completely drop the ball on the best character-writing job that mainline Pokémon has ever done (please; please don’t), there will probably be a Part 2 to this analysis coming in a few months. (Aaaaand here it is! But you should read this one first, of course.)
(I’ll be referring to the player character as “you” here for ease of wording, but rest assured, this doesn’t mean I’m accusing you the reader of any of the questionable ways the player character treats Kieran. I was also very annoyed at being forced to lie to him, believe me.)
His weakness, and your strength
Kieran is a kid gripped with a crushing sense of inferiority and weakness. We don’t see all of where this came from, although we get a pretty good idea of part of it – his sister. So many times when Kieran tries to protest against things and assert himself, Carmine snaps back at him for doing so. Over time, that kind of thing would have made him feel like he’s wrong for trying to stand up for himself, leading to him letting people walk all over him. I don’t want to give Carmine’s behaviour all of the blame for Kieran’s issues, though, because there’s bound to be more to it than that. I expect some of it also came from him being bullied and outcast during his time at Blueberry Academy – I hope The Indigo Disk gives us glimpses into what Kieran’s life there was like before all this.
As a result of feeling so weak and inferior, Kieran admires and idolises people he sees as strong. This becomes clear early on with how much he looks up to you just for being able to beat his sister, someone else he also sees as strong. Apparently, he couldn’t stop raving about how cool you were and how he wanted to battle you all evening back at home.
He doesn’t want you to know that, though, based on his protest when Carmine comes out and tells you so. Kieran's probably rather embarrassed for you to hear how much he idolises you, after all. He also seems to think his request for a battle would be annoying and a bother – he says “You don’t mind?” in surprise when you accept, even though asking people for battles is supposed to be just what trainers do. Why would a strong trainer like you want to waste your time battling someone weak like him?
Kieran’s comment in the battle if you land a super effective move is also very telling: “Oof, ehehe… I guess I got a lot of weaknesses…” He tries to play it off as light-hearted, but, hm, that sure is A Way for a rival character to comment on you knowing about type matchups. And he most certainly does not seem to agree with his sister when she says he’s almost as strong as her.
(Fun fact: the game actually lets you lose the first battle with each sibling while still continuing the story. If you lose to Kieran in that first battle, he assumes you were holding back against him, as if that’s the only reason he’d ever be able to beat anyone. Perhaps he’s experienced people holding back against him out of pity before – maybe Carmine used to?)
He's flustered when Carmine partners him up with you, too, even though you’re the only option that he has at least a vague rapport with now – he’s still assuming someone cool like you wouldn’t want to waste any more of your time on him than you have to. Kieran worries he’ll “get in your way” if he sticks with you, so he hangs back and stays well out of your way instead. It’s a cute way for the game to justify him not actually following you around in the gameplay even though he’s supposed to be following you according to the plot, but it also just makes perfect sense for Kieran’s character. This is a kid who constantly tries to take up as little space as possible because he’s convinced that nobody wants him around. And it’s important that he seems to feel especially this way towards the people he looks up to (with the exception of Carmine, because she’s family and he spends most of his time with her already).
Then there’s the scene where he meets Koraidon/Miraidon. At first, I assumed it was there to introduce Kieran to our lizardbike friend because they’d be relevant later somehow. But they’re not! So the only reason this scene exists at all is for the purpose of illustrating to Kieran that, in his words, “you’re special”. You are A Protagonist, capable of befriending super special, rare, strong Pokémon with ease. (Just like a certain other special legendary Pokémon you’ll be meeting soon, how about that.)
Admiring the ogre
So, as you begin the trip to visit the signboards about Kitakami’s legend, Kieran starts to open up about how much he likes the ogre. Perhaps he feels safe telling you, because you’re an outsider and won’t frown upon him for it like the locals are prone to do. He probably gets that from them a lot and has learned not to bring up the ogre in town – another thing that makes him feel left out.
Even so, Kieran starts from the angle of “it’s so strong and cool because it won one-on-three”, since that’s a more acceptable reason to like the ogre that doesn’t question the validity of the legend, and is less personal to his issues. If you agree with him that the ogre sounds cool before he’s explained why he thinks so, he responds with “I knew you’d get it!” – you, who’s also really strong and cool, would obviously recognise that same strength in the ogre right away, right?
If you’re sceptical at first instead, he stresses that “it was all alone!” and still managed to hold its own – the more personal side of the reason he likes the ogre coming out just a little. By the second signboard, Kieran’s gotten a bit more comfortable with you, enough to start touching on that more deliberately. He mentions that it’s shunned, and that he likes its strength because he admires that and wishes he could be that strong himself.
Then he invites you to see the ogre’s den, something completely unrelated to the purpose of the school trip, because he trusts you enough to feel sure that you’ll get what he’s trying to illustrate about the ogre there. He points out that it seems like a lonely, miserable place to live, and that he’d happily let the ogre stay at his house if it wanted. He’s not quite explicitly saying so, but Kieran clearly empathises with the ogre because he relates to that kind of loneliness. Though he doesn’t want to outright say that the legend is wrong and the ogre isn’t actually the bad guy – maybe he’s got backlash from the villagers before for suggesting it – he's got to believe that to be the case.
(I’ve seen one or two people suggest that Kieran fawning over the supposed bad guy in the legend is an early hint to his potential for darkness, but I really don’t think that’s it. There’s plenty of reason for Kieran to relate to and see the sympathetic side of the ogre in the story due to his own status as a social outcast, without it needing to be a case of “he just likes bad guys because he’s Edgy”.)
Later, at the festival, Kieran has a quiet chuckle to himself when Carmine’s talking about the Loyal Three being heroes, and says it’s funny that she doesn’t know anything about the ogre. Then he conspicuously changes the subject when she implies that it’s just that he likes edgy bad guys, because that’s not it – but at least now he has someone who does get it. Carmine mentions later that she feels Kieran is trying to one-up her about the ogre, and maybe this is true. Perhaps this is one small way in which he can privately feel superior to his sister, because he’s more right than her, or than anyone in the village, about the ogre’s true nature. And while that’s more due to luck and a large helping of projecting his own issues onto it than out of any genuine inside knowledge of the truth, Kieran is the one person who understands the ogre best.
Or, at least, he understands it best… for the most part. Because there is one very key way in which Kieran is actually thoroughly wrong about what Ogerpon is truly like.
Misunderstanding the ogre
This begins to be apparent at the second signboard, when Kieran’s gushing about the ogre’s coolness and says “it didn’t even care when everyone shunned it”. From meeting Ogerpon later, we know that this is patently not true about her – she’s terrified of humans because of how they see her, so really she hates being shunned! But Kieran doesn’t imagine that to be the case about her, even though he empathises with her presumed loneliness and is basically projecting his own onto her. He sees the ogre as somebody who is shunned and alone, like he is, but who, unlike him, is strong enough to not let it get to them. Someone in the same bad situation as him, but with strength that he only wishes he could have to deal with it.
In that same conversation at the second signboard, Kieran then goes on to talk about how his sister always does everything for him, and he’d like to become stronger and more independent and reliable. And, “then, just maybe… I could be that ogre’s friend.” As if he doesn’t think he’d deserve to be Ogerpon’s friend unless he was already strong, just like she is.
He mentions a couple of times that he comes to the Dreaded Den a lot but has never once seen the ogre, which might seem a little strange at first. Obviously Ogerpon kept well hidden from him because she’s scared of humans – but, did Kieran never try to call out to her? To tell her that he’s not afraid of her, that he admires her strength and she must be lonely and hey, maybe they could be friends? If he had, then surely over time, Ogerpon would have grown to trust him and shown herself – so apparently, Kieran never did try to call out to her in an attempt to befriend her. Because he felt he wasn’t worthy of her friendship, not when he’s so weak, so inferior to someone as strong and cool as her. (A lot like how he wouldn’t have had the courage to tell you how much he admired you, if his sister hadn’t blurted it out for him.)
While you’re visiting the den with him, Kieran assumes that “a powerful ogre like that would only show up if it heard some kinda battle”, leading to him challenging you again. Since he admires the ogre for its strength, he’s assuming that the ogre also values strength just as much if not more than he does, which really isn’t necessarily true about Ogerpon!
During the battle, Kieran says he’ll “put up a good fight” this time. Which is to say, he still feels so thoroughly outclassed by you that he isn’t remotely expecting or even trying to win – he just wants to at least not go down quite as pitifully as last time, not when he’s potentially being watched by his idol the ogre. And when he loses (the game requires you to win this and all future battles against him), he laments how he’s ever going to be able to beat you, and then he muses, “If the ogre saw that battle, I’m sure it’d be thinking, ‘That kid’s got some real strength…’” He is assuming that Ogerpon would like you, far more than she’d ever like him, because of how strong you are. This is very important.
(As it happens, Ogerpon was secretly watching that battle, but as for whether she’s actually thinking what Kieran imagines she is about your strength – who knows?)
Friendship! Or is it…?
By the end of the den visit, Kieran has just enough confidence to invite you to the Festival of Masks, and to his own house to get ready to go together, which there’s no way he’d have been able to do at the start of the day. He’s so surprised but thrilled to hear that you consider yourself his friend – based on that and his grandparents’ reactions, you’re likely the first friend he’s ever made, which would not be surprising. It’s lovely watching this shy but sweet kid actually smiling and feeling comfortable around you and happy to have someone he can call a friend for the first time ever. And GHHHH it is so painful in hindsight knowing where things are headed.
Even with you calling yourself his friend, though, Kieran still feels inferior to you. He dejectedly offers to give you his mask for the festival when you find yourself without one, even though it’s the ogre mask, his favourite, his thing – because he instinctively feels that if anyone should be the one who gets left out, it should be him, like always, and not you.
The whole time, Kieran’s bound to be feeling thoroughly insecure about this new friendship. The idea that he’s actually made a friend, and not least someone as cool as you, likely feels far too good to be true, more than he deserves, and I suspect he might be constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. When he mentions to Carmine that you’re coming to the festival with him, her response is vaguely evasive, and Kieran responds to that in a very prickly, defensive way. It reads to me like he thinks Carmine is jealous of him befriending you before her, and that he’s afraid she might try to take you away from him as a result. Whether that’s actually true or not isn’t really the point (I think Carmine might indeed be a little jealous, but she would not do something that deliberately malicious) – what matters is that Kieran believes this may be the case and is liable to view all further interactions with you and Carmine in that light.
Then, at the festival, Carmine pressures Kieran into playing Ogre Oustin’ even though he doesn’t really want to. She’s probably doing this in an attempt to encourage him to have fun, but since he doesn’t find it fun (because he doesn't like this game where he's pretend-killing the ogre!), it’d be easy for him to feel like she only did it because she wanted him out of the way so she could hang out with you. And it’s while Kieran’s doing that that you and Carmine meet Ogerpon without him. Of course, that’s nothing but pure unlucky bad timing – Carmine had no idea Ogerpon was about to show up – but from Kieran’s point of view, with his obvious history of being maliciously left out of things by others, it’s easy for him to feel like there was some deliberate element to it.
At first he doesn’t know it has anything to do with Ogerpon, though. But still, when he gets back from Ogre Oustin’ and asks what you two were up to, Carmine abruptly shuts you up before you can speak and is blatantly hiding something – which Kieran takes to mean that you were laughing at him behind his back. That’s something else he must get a lot, for him to be automatically assuming it’s happening here. Really not so far off from his fear that his sister’s going to try and take you away from him, either.
Carmine’s lie isn’t done out of any malice – she is genuinely trying to protect her brother from feeling bad over being left out of meeting Ogerpon – but she sure is doing so in a way that’s going to make him feel even worse over being left out on purpose once he realises the truth. Carmine does care about her brother in theory, but this girl has zero social brain cells. And we the player are forced to play along with the lie whether we want to or not, which awkwardly turns our player-insert character into a very specific kind of character who would do so. I guess they either also have zero social brain cells, or they’re kind of a doormat who’s swayed by a forceful personality like Carmine’s. This part is frustrating, but I have to accept it because of the delightful things it does to Kieran’s arc, which really is the important part here.
Learning of the lie
The next morning, it seems like Kieran’s largely managed to brush off the weird bit last night where you and his sister were maybe laughing at him behind his back, because he greets you with a smile, ready to go see the last signboard. And then Carmine… forcefully demands that he finds somewhere else to be, because you’ve got business with her. Kieran protests that it’s not fair that you’ve been spending all your time with her lately – score two for his fear that she’s trying to take you away from him – and when she snaps back at his protest like always, he runs off.
But he doesn’t run off that far, because he stays close enough to listen in on the conversation. The discussion of Ogerpon’s story goes on for long enough – and takes long enough to get to the important part – that Kieran pretty much has to have stayed to eavesdrop on purpose, which is a little sketchy of him. Still, I can’t blame him all that much, what with his background of being mistreated, and the way Carmine’s behaviour gives him ample reason to be afraid there’s something going on here – of course he’d have wanted to know for sure. Perhaps he was even trying to hope that listening in would prove that you’re not actually hiding something bad from him and he was just being paranoid.
Except that actually, it turns out the truth is so much worse than Kieran had feared. Never mind just laughing at him – you and Carmine met the ogre without him and then hid it from him as if he didn’t even deserve to know. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, it then turns out that he was right all along about the ogre being a good guy, and his own grandpa didn’t even think it was worth telling him that, and now you’re still just going to keep lying to him about it all and leaving him in the dark.
(Really, I have to side-eye their grandpa a lot more than Carmine here, because he’s a grown dang adult and has so much less excuse. He says he’ll tell Kieran the truth “when the time is right”, but what does that even mean? The “right time” would be right now! Heck, it should have been the moment he realised that Kieran had already intuited the truth!)
And all this being lied to and shunned and left out of things (like always) stings even more for Kieran because it’s coming from someone he’d thought was his friend. He’d actually dared to hope that someone – and not just anyone, someone really cool and strong – actually wanted to be friends with him? Of course that was too good to be true. Why would someone as cool and strong as you have ever wanted to befriend a weak loser like him, anyway? (After all, cool strong people only ever want to be friends with other cool strong people; that’s how it works, right?)
Probing about the lie
The correct thing for Kieran to do with this situation would have been to simply come right out and confront you about the lie. But of course he doesn’t have the courage to do that. He’s far too used to being shot down whenever he tries to assert and stand up for himself (no thanks to Carmine). And since he only learned about this because he was eavesdropping, it’s easy for him to imagine having that turned against him, and the whole situation being treated like he’s the one in the wrong for doing that.
Still, it seems like Kieran might want to at least indirectly give you the opportunity to tell him the truth. He heads off to the village shop to act like he was there the whole time, and then casually asks you what you were talking about back there. He’s maybe trying to hope that you don’t really want to lie to him and only got swept up into doing so by his sister’s forcefulness, and that you’ll tell him everything now that she’s not here, because, you said you were his friend, right? Later on, too, at the third signboard, the way Kieran brings up that his family is descended from the mask maker feels suspiciously relevant, as if he only thought to do so because he overheard the story and is trying to give you a chance to go, “Hey, speaking of that mask maker, actually…”
But no. It sure seems like you’re very deliberately choosing to keep him in the dark. As such, he’s bound to be feeling extra small and awkward at the signboard, just wanting to “get this over with” and be done spending time with you, because you clearly don’t want to waste any more of your time with him than you have to, right? The awkwardness of the third signboard photo, with Kieran obviously not wanting to be there, and your character’s very strained thumbs-up, is heartbreaking in comparison to how cute and happy the first two were.
During the conversation there, Kieran mentions the ogre being alone and treated like an outcast in a way that is very clearly also talking about how you and Carmine are treating him right now. The game pointedly lingers on his response to your comment, regardless of which dialogue option you choose. If you agree that that sounds awful, he says, “You think so too, huh?” – you think that it’s bad to treat someone that way, and yet, you sure are treating him that way anyway. If you instead mutter an awkward apology, Kieran asks, “For what?” This could read like he’s calling you out for not being able to admit to what you should be apologising for, but actually, I’m not sure that’s it. It could also be him genuinely asking that, because he doesn’t realise you need to apologise for anything. Hold this thought, I’ll go into it more in a bit.
It's because he’s weak
The other thing that happens at the third signboard is Kieran challenging you to another battle. He doesn’t really explain why, but I suspect he’s hoping that if he wins and proves his strength to you, you might just tell him the truth, or at least it’ll give him the courage to confront you about your lie. This is the first battle in which he says he wants to win and is actively trying and hoping to do so, rather than just accepting his loss before he’s even started. His optimism is pretty fragile, though, as he laments “it wasn’t supposed to go like this” if you hit him super-effectively, and “why does it have to be like this?” when he’s down to his last Pokémon.
But of course, he loses, just like he must secretly have been expecting to all along (how could he ever beat someone as strong as you?). And so he concludes, “it’s all ‘cause I’m too weak” – not just losing the battle, but everything. Why he’s always left out and shunned by everyone, why you lied to him and went behind his back about something you knew was important to him – it’s because he’s weak. He was battling you to try and prove that he’s stronger, strong enough to deserve better than that… but of course he isn’t.
A particularly important little subtlety is that he mutters “That’s why I…” – because it would have been easy to expect this line to say “you” instead. That you lied to him and shunned him because he’s weak, that it’s your fault for choosing to treat someone weak like this. But Kieran isn’t framing it that way. He’s thinking of it as his fault, simply for being weak, and that’s why he will always inevitably be treated like crap by everyone around him. As if that’s nobody else’s fault for choosing to do that, but simply the natural way of things when someone’s weak. As if he deserves this for being weak.
(So: what are you sorry for? You shouldn’t be sorry for anything; it’s his fault, isn’t it? Someone as strong and perfect as you could never be conflicted or in the wrong.)
By the end of this signboard visit, Kieran’s leaving on his own, saying that he’s got to get stronger with his Pokémon. All of this is happening because he’s weak, so he needs to be stronger – and apparently, that means “strength in Pokémon battling”. In reality, even if he did become the best battler out there, that wouldn’t necessarily make him any better at standing up for himself in social situations or being independent and reliable in other ways, but he’s very much conflating the different kinds of strength. This probably has a lot to do with his schooling at Blueberry Academy, which teaches Pokémon battling, leaving him overly focused on battling strength as the only kind of strength that matters. Perhaps he was picked on at school because he wasn’t very good at the battling classes, which wouldn’t have helped. I hope we see some glimpses of this in The Indigo Disk.
And on the topic of Kieran fixating on getting stronger at Pokémon battling: his Furret is never seen in his team again after this point. It was one of the first two Pokémon he used against you, so it’s presumably one of his closest Pokémon partners, which makes it heartbreaking that he ditches it from his team because, clearly, it’s too weak. Even worse, he’s inflicting being left out and shunned on someone else – someone he probably cared about – precisely because it’s weak. That’s just what happens to people who are weak, right? Guh. Poor Furret.
Outburst at Loyalty Plaza
Kieran most likely spends the next 24 hours alternating between fervently training as hard as he can, and stewing in his feelings of loneliness and rejection and betrayal. His grandpa mentions that he spent that night in his room after not even eating dinner, which, yeah, when he’s sharing a house with two of the people who are lying to him, not surprising. Oof. And more than just pain and betrayal, he’s got to be feeling so much anger, anger which he’s never been able to truly express, because every time he tries to stand up for himself he always gets shot down – but that only makes the suppressed anger worse.
The correct thing to do would have been for Kieran to confront everyone calmly about the lie as soon as he became aware of it. But because he couldn’t just do that, his resentment festered inside of him with no real outlet, until finally it becomes unbearable and explodes out of him and he has to do something to express it, no matter how questionable. So he steals the Teal Mask and runs off with it.
I don’t think Kieran actually has much of an idea of what he’s going to do with the mask. The one logical thing would have been to give it back to Ogerpon himself, but that can’t be his intent, because he doesn’t go anywhere near her den with it. And I highly doubt he’s planning to break it or anything like that, since he’d never do something that’d hurt Ogerpon. Really, I think he just wants you and Carmine to notice and acknowledge what he’s going through and what you’ve done to him – and if he steals the mask, you’re going to have to confront him to get it back.
He heads to Loyalty Plaza in particular because he’s conflating his own situation with Ogerpon’s. In amongst his pain and anger at the way he’s being treated, he’d have also been feeling a lot of anger at the injustice of how Ogerpon was and is treated, because he was right all along that she was never the bad guy, but she’s shunned undeservedly while the “Loyal” Three are lauded as heroes. Even though this outburst from Kieran is really all about his own situation, he makes it about Ogerpon first, because that’s easier for him to openly be angry about. He only brings up his own treatment as a comparison to how Ogerpon is treated like an outcast, as if the only way he can frame it as wrong in his head is by comparing it to something that’s definitely wrong. (After all, he deserves to be shunned because he’s weak – but Ogerpon didn’t deserve any of it, because she’s so much stronger!)
During Kieran’s outburst, Carmine blurts out an apology on realising that she’s hurt him – but Kieran basically just ignores it and continues to vent. Which tells us something interesting: that Kieran never did this out of any attempt to get you and Carmine to apologise for lying to him. If he’d wanted that, he’d have reacted in some way when Carmine did just that. So I think, in keeping with Kieran’s belief that all this is his fault for being weak, he doesn’t actually think you two need to apologise for anything. He’s lashing out because he’s angry and in pain and doesn’t know how else to deal with it, but he’s not consciously thinking that you and Carmine are in the wrong.
He’s also still holding onto the idea that you and Carmine were just laughing at him behind his back, which is of course not true, but when Carmine tries to say that, Kieran snaps back that she’s a liar. Given that she undeniably has lied to him about one very important thing, of course Kieran would find it easy to believe that she could be lying to him about anything and he can’t trust any reassurance she gives him. This poor kid must have such a history of being mistreated and patronised by others to jump to assuming things like this.
Lashing out with a battle
Then Kieran challenges you to another battle, promising to give back the mask if you win. Since there’s no way he is truly expecting to be able to beat you, this means that he never really intended to keep the mask forever. But he also doesn’t just want to seem like some weak pushover who’ll roll over and give in as soon as he’s confronted, so he at least wants to make you fight him for it. And based on his line at the beginning of the battle – “I know this isn’t right, but… I can’t just hand over the mask to you!” – he doesn’t want to just give up one of Ogerpon’s possessions so easily to someone who treated him like an outcast the same way those villagers back then treated Ogerpon.
Really, I think the battle – and the notably forceful way he asks for it, unlike the previous times – just comes a lot from Kieran’s anger, and his need to externalise it somehow. He even insists that he needs this battle, if you’re hesitant about accepting the challenge. There’s probably a part of him that wants to lash out with physical violence, maybe punch you or something, but he knows that’s wrong and that it’d look pathetically impotent of him anyway even if he tried. Happily, this world has a socially-accepted form of violence-by-proxy instead, so Pokémon battle it is!
As for the battle itself, Kieran’s switched up his team some more, removing Furret as previously mentioned, and adding two new members instead of just one like the previous times – but the Cramorant he uses here doesn’t stick around either. This is less sad to me than Furret, though, because he wouldn’t have been very close to it. Cramorant may even have been taken onto the team with the condition of “I’m trying out new team members to see who’s strong enough”, at which point ditching it is less of a betrayal and more of it simply failing a job interview.
(Meanwhile, the other newcomer, Gligar, clearly impressed Kieran a lot with its strength, as it becomes his ace for the final fight. Fitting that his ace there is not a long-time partner, but one obtained only after he began to fixate on getting stronger.)
He’s also more openly determined to win (despite his suppressed conviction that he could never beat you), and remains more optimistic than before even when things aren’t going so well for him. In fact, this is the only battle in which Kieran has lines for hitting you with a super effective move or a critical hit. That said, he’s still a little insecure, based on an optional line: “I need to get this right… I’m gonna make sure to give the right commands!” which tells us that he feels like his losses are his fault for making mistakes and choosing the wrong moves, rather than blaming his Pokémon for not being strong enough. He also has an absolutely great comment in this battle if you land a critical hit, which I have to highlight: “What can’t you do? You’re like the hero in a story…” It’s purely luck, but despite that, he’s seeing you as this impossibly perfect hero that he could never ever measure up to, and this delights me.
Losing the battle just seems to make Kieran’s frustration at his own inferiority even worse, to the point that he does indulge in some physical violence, towards the shrine. Which is as pathetic as he must have been expecting, and should in theory have been harmless enough. (Of course, it appears that this is what somehow resurrects the Lousy Three, but there is no way Kieran expected or wanted that to happen, so he can’t be blamed for that.) Then he gives the mask back, just as he promised he would, and (ignoring another attempt by Carmine to apologise – again, this was never about that to him) he runs off back home.
So I find it really hard to condemn Kieran for… any of his actions here? Sure, he stole the mask, but he didn’t do anything bad with it and gave it back just fine (and must have always been intending to). All he was doing was lashing out – unhealthily, but basically harmlessly – over the really very callous way you and Carmine had been treating him. And if he hadn’t done this, you two would probably never have told him the truth about Ogerpon, and he’d have remained out of the loop and never met her at all! That would have been awful!
And yet: making you and Carmine bring him into the loop about Ogerpon and getting the chance to meet her is also not something Kieran was aiming for here. Just before leaving in a sulk, he says, “Say hi to the ogre for me” – which means that he never expected to get to meet it himself. He is still, even by the end of this confrontation, labouring under the belief that you and Carmine don’t want him there with Ogerpon and that he doesn’t deserve to meet her at all.
Apologies, and a lack thereof
After you rescue Ogerpon from being bullied by the resurrected Lousy Three, Carmine shows up with Kieran in tow. Apparently she found him moping around at home and dragged him here to apologise to you about his stunt with the mask. Which, yes, does warrant an apology – but what really frustrates me about this part is that Carmine doesn’t apologise for what you and she did wrong. Sure, she blurted out a couple of cut-off apologies back at Loyalty Plaza, but those never had the intended effect when Kieran was in no emotional state to accept them. Here and now, he’s calmed down enough that he would be able to take on board an apology… but Carmine doesn’t give one. It’s possible that she already apologised at home before bringing him here, but if she’d done that, then she really ought to have got you to also apologise for lying to him, and she doesn’t – so I can only assume that didn’t happen. And you the player can choose to apologise to Kieran here anyway, but since it’s optional, it’s not given nearly the attention it deserves.
Since Kieran never gets a proper apology while he’s in a state to listen, it means he never actually ends up internalising the fact that you were in the wrong to lie to him and he didn’t deserve to be treated that way. Which would have been a really, really important thing for him to realise! As it is, he continues to quietly assume that all of this is his fault for being weak, with nobody to tell him that this way of thinking is flawed.
It's frustrating, but I do kind of get it, from Carmine at least, because she’s also a pretty flawed person. Her deal seems to be that she’s only able to be emotionally sincere in uncontrolled outbursts when she’s worked up, and when she’s calm she covers up her true feelings with bossiness and vanity. Which makes her not at all capable of apologising to Kieran when he’s in a calm enough state to be capable of registering it. These siblings’ issues do not mesh well. Still, here’s hoping that Carmine’s able to self-reflect enough to acknowledge her partial responsibility for Kieran’s suffering by the end of The Indigo Disk.
She does seem to realise her mistake here enough to make a point of trying to include Kieran in their Ogerpon adventures from here on out, at least. But it’s too little too late in terms of how Kieran views things. He seems to have assumed that Carmine dragged him here only to apologise, and not to properly meet Ogerpon or be involved in helping her out, because he expresses surprise when Carmine casually includes him as part of the Mask Retrieval Squad. He was expecting to be shunned and left out as always – what do you mean, she wants him there?
Meeting Ogerpon
The only interaction Kieran was expecting to have with Ogerpon here was giving the fixed-up mask back to her, because he wanted to be the one to do so – but she shies away from him when he offers it. Carmine comments that she’s probably scared of new people, and this is likely the truth, but Kieran’s silent response suggests that he’s not necessarily agreeing with that assessment. Remember, from earlier: Kieran is convinced that Ogerpon values strength. And he’s so used to being shunned by others, especially strong people, because he’s weak. It would be very, very easy for him to come to the irrational conclusion that the reason Ogerpon refuses him is because of his weakness, even though his sister’s suggesting something else.
Despite Kieran’s key misconceptions about Ogerpon’s values, he does continue to understand her better than most people in certain ways. When you try to head into town with her, Kieran’s the one to point out that she’s probably afraid to go in because of the way she’s been treated by the townspeople. He also comments that she’ll feel safe going to retrieve the masks from the Three as long as she’s with you. He empathises with that insecurity and social anxiety enough that, seeing it from Ogerpon in person, he can instinctively see that’s the case about her too.
And yet… seeing Ogerpon’s fear, and understanding that she’s scared of being shunned just like him (which he previously said the ogre didn’t care at all about!), doesn’t actually change the part of Kieran that is also irrationally convinced that she only cares about strength. There’s no moment in which he seems to be re-evaluating Ogerpon or realising anything new about her upon seeing her being afraid. The part where she’s shy and afraid, and the part where she’s strong and cool and therefore values strength in others, manage to be separate enough in his mind that he never actually cross-references them to realise that one of these surely can’t be as true as he thinks it is. So his false conviction that things are about strength to Ogerpon still remains, unchallenged.
Staying behind
Then, even though Carmine is making an active point of trying to include him, Kieran… chooses not to come with you on the mission to retrieve the masks. This is despite the fact that this’d be his best chance to spend time with Ogerpon and hopefully get her to warm up to him, which you’d think would be his priority when he’s quietly hoping to maybe have the chance to become her partner.
But even though it would be a logical choice for Kieran to come with them, it makes perfect sense to me why he doesn’t. As far as he sees things, you and Carmine are way stronger than him and already have the fights against the Three covered – he’d be nothing but a useless third wheel hanging back, only there out of Carmine’s pity for him and not because he’s needed. And in terms of Ogerpon, Kieran is the kid who visited her den countless times but never had the courage to call out to her and ask to be friends. Of course he knows he wouldn’t have the confidence to actually try and get closer to Ogerpon, especially not when she’s already got someone she likes (someone who’s strong while he’s weak, which is clearly what matters to her, right). He knows he’ll just spend the whole time watching Ogerpon obviously like you way more than him while not being able to do a thing about it, and it’ll just make him feel even more jealous and left out.
(Trust me, as someone with social anxiety who spent a lot of my childhood being low-key outcasted by my so-called friend groups, I get it. When you’ve lived like that, integrating yourself with new people can feel downright impossible, no matter how much you may want it.)
So Kieran doesn’t come on the mission – but it’s not like he just uselessly sulks around, either. He spends the time doing something else to help Ogerpon, something neither you nor Carmine seemingly thought needed to be done: telling the town the truth that she was never a bad guy. Because of course Kieran understands best just how hard it is for Ogerpon to be shunned and outcast by everyone, and of course he has some Strong Feelings that people deserve to be told the truth, hmm I wonder where that might have come from. This task is really difficult and scary for him, too, because he hates talking to people – but he does it anyway, for Ogerpon’s sake! What a brave lad!
(I’ve seen people side-eye the fact that the villagers accept the truth and turn around their view of Ogerpon so easily, but honestly it doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. I get the mask maker way back when being persecuted because the villagers of the time saw Ogerpon kill the Three and made assumptions, but, like, it’s been generations. All of the witnesses who had that emotional gut reaction to the fight are long dead. Most of the people alive today didn’t even truly believe the story of the ogre was real until the Loyal Three showed up – they just thought it was a fun folktale that gives their village some unique culture. So for them to be told “hey, the ogre is real, but also the story’s backwards and the ogre’s actually the good guy”… so what? I was always sceptical of Grandpa’s conviction that the truth must never be told to the village (because… people will get angry that they were lied to? So therefore you should just keep lying to them so they never find out they have something to be angry about? Yes, great tactic, it worked so well on Kieran). Kieran basically just went and proved that there really was nothing to be worried about all along and the people should have been told the truth ages ago.)
His final chance to be strong
So now we reach the end, where Ogerpon makes it clear that she wants to stay with you, and… and even though he must have seen this coming, Kieran can’t accept it happening without trying to fight against it.
This isn’t even really about Kieran wanting Ogerpon’s friendship in and of itself. It’s more about what the concept of being partners with Ogerpon means to him. This whole time, he’s been obsessed with the ogre, and yet only letting himself imagine that maybe one day when he’s stronger, he could be its friend. He’s fixated on the idea of befriending Ogerpon as something that will mean he’s strong and no longer alone and everything is good now. Obviously this is extremely irrational and not necessarily true nor the sole way to fix his problems, but that’s how things are in Kieran’s head.
And so, with recent events making him feel even more weak and outcast than ever, you being effortlessly strong and cool enough to befriend Ogerpon on top of everything else feels to Kieran like it’s about to take away his one chance to turn things around, forever. Of course he can’t just let that happen without at least trying to have things his way. He says right at the beginning of the battle: “I know you’re probably a better trainer for Ogerpon, but I… I…” – and he can’t even voice the end of that sentence. He can’t put into words why he feels like he needs to become Ogerpon’s partner even though he knows he's being selfish and she’d be better off with you, because it’s not based in any conscious logic and is all just one big subconscious irrational mess of his issues and inferiority complex.
I’ve seen a lot of people condemn Kieran for this part, saying that he’s ignoring Ogerpon’s wishes because he’s planning to force her to join him whether she wants to or not if he wins. However, I firmly disagree that Kieran has any such thing in mind here. Remember, he’s still labouring under the misconception that what Ogerpon cares about most is strength. He thinks she likes you so much because you’re so strong (remember the previous time he battled you in front of the den, where he commented that the ogre must be thinking how strong you are if it’d seen that?), and that she refused the mask from him that one time because he’s weak. So Kieran has convinced himself that if he can prove himself to be stronger than you, by defeating you in a battle while Ogerpon’s watching, then she’ll naturally choose him to be her trainer over you. Right?
When Carmine says that he has to consider Ogerpon’s feelings, Kieran’s simply silent for a moment before saying “…I want to battle anyway.” He’s not denying that Ogerpon’s choice is what matters – he just believes, or is at least trying to believe, that her choice will be determined by this battle. And of course he doesn’t say anything like “Ogerpon will choose me if I’m stronger than you”, because – well, perhaps because a lot of this is also subconscious enough that he can’t articulate it, but even if any of it was conscious, he knows it’d sound stupid. Especially the part where he’d be talking like it’s possible for him to beat you, because deep down, he still completely convinced that’s impossible.
Plus, nowhere in this does Kieran bring up the fact that he told the village the truth about Ogerpon as a point in his favour for why she might choose him – which supports that it’s not about any kind of friendly gestures to him and he’s convinced she’ll make her decision entirely based on strength. (And it also proves that he did that out of a genuine desire to help Ogerpon, without any ulterior motives of trying to get her to like him!)
Just before the battle, he says: “Whoever wins gets to be Ogerpon’s partner… So don’t… don’t you dare hold back!” – making a point of demanding you don’t hold back, even though you might think he’d want any advantage he can get towards supposedly winning Ogerpon’s favour. But this makes perfect sense when you realise what this is about to Kieran. He believes that Ogerpon will choose (and deserves to choose) whichever of you is the strongest, and this battle won’t actually prove that if he only wins because you were holding back against him.
Kieran also thanks you for not holding back when you land your first super effective hit, which I enjoy. He’s so used to being patronised and seen as weak and pathetic, so he’s actually glad that you’re taking him seriously and viewing him as a legitimate opponent.
And, hey, he is! His team is pretty stacked: a full six Pokémon with solid movesets, and even strategic held items (at least in the postgame version). Assuming you’re not over-levelled, it’s quite a challenging fight, as it should be. Kieran is trying so, so hard to be strong enough, because this poor kid has convinced himself that all of his problems and pain are due to him being weak, and he is so desperate to fix that by proving himself even stronger than you, strong enough to win Ogerpon’s favour.
When he loses, he just crumples, and it’s heartbreaking. Kieran had so much more riding on this battle than just befriending Ogerpon – this was what felt like his one and only chance to stamp out the part of him that feels crushingly inferior and like he deserves to be treated like dirt. Guhhh.
And of course the first thing out of his mouth is, “Figures.” His inferiority complex runs so deep that, no matter how hard he’d trained and how genuinely really good his team had grown, he never truly believed that he ever had a chance at beating someone as cool and strong as you. He was just desperately trying to convince himself that he at least had a shot, because he couldn’t bear to give up without trying.
I really wish you could tell Kieran how good he was in this battle! It truly is impressive how much better he’s grown at battling since the first one, in such a short space of time, too. Just because he’s not quite as strong as you doesn’t mean he’s weak, not by a long shot. But nobody tells him any such thing, so Kieran continues to view things in that irrationally all-or-nothing way. He lost, so he's weak, end of.
Then he has to stand there and watch you battle Ogerpon in order to catch her. Before all of this happened, Kieran would have been so stoked to see his hero the ogre showing off just how cool and strong she is – and hey, her powers really are pretty awesome to behold! But here, despite the amazing spectacle in front of him, Kieran just looks supremely awkward. Like he doesn’t feel like he deserves to be here. Like he doesn’t even have the right to get to see Ogerpon’s full strength in all its glory. You’re the only one who’s strong enough to have earned this.
He does make one possible comment during the battle, if you land a critical hit on Ogerpon: “You really are good… I’m no match.” Which is a bit excessive, considering that really anyone is capable of critting Ogerpon if they get lucky – but apparently Kieran’s thoughts during this battle are still incredibly hung up on just how strong you are and how he’ll never be able to measure up to you. This goes to show that his issues at this point have shifted to be more about you than about Ogerpon. Which tracks, since his admiration for the ogre was never quite about Ogerpon herself and was more about what her strength represented to him – and now you’ve come along and given him an even bigger example of impossibly cool strength, in a much more painful way.
Once you’ve captured Ogerpon, Kieran manages to awkwardly congratulate you on it – hey, he’s doing his best not to be a sore loser! – laments once again why he can’t be like you, and then runs off. No doubt he’s feeling a huge heap of uncontainable painful emotions that he does not want to show in front of you or Carmine and needs to go let out in private. This kid is Not Okay.
So, in summary: Kieran comes out of all this with the message that all of his pain and suffering and loneliness is his fault because he’s still too weak, and he will only ever be strong enough to put all that behind him once he’s stronger than you. And to do that, he needs to get so, so much stronger, almost impossibly so, no matter what he has to do to achieve it. I’m sure this will be Just Fine leading into The Indigo Disk. (: (: (:
And one last thing: the game doesn’t let this happen, but if Kieran had won that final battle against you, I believe things might actually have turned out better. Because let’s face it, Ogerpon would probably still have chosen to go with you anyway, and if she had, Kieran would have been forced to face the fact that it was never actually about strength to her. It wouldn’t even be that hard for him to understand that, given that he’d already noticed the indications that she was scared of being shunned by the townspeople and that she liked you because you made her feel safe. This would help Kieran recontextualise things a little and stop focusing so unhealthily on gaining more battling strength as the One Thing that will solve all his problems. He still wouldn’t exactly be suddenly fixed and happy, but… things wouldn’t be quite so bad, at least. Alas, you are Too Protagonist to lose and let that happen.

a/n: my first time sharing my writing with anyone. It does feel a little vulnerable and out of my confront zone. Hope you like this short piece tho!
summary: one would think that Harry would be sad about the end of his tour yet there’s something that he is definitely looking forward to.
warnings: none, just fluff
You couldn’t be more excited for tonight. Dressed up in your outfit, that you had picked out last night, you were standing now in front of one of the mirrors in Harry’s dressing room. Occasionally you could hear the crowd cheering and singing One Direction songs as they were waiting for the show to begin. The last show of the tour.
At first it was challenging for your new relationship to compromise your life in London and Harry’s tour. You didn’t know how it was gonna be but Harry did everything he could on his end to make it work. He always does.
And it did work. Whenever you could, you joined him on the tour. Exploring the cities together and watching him on stage were one of your things to do. His talent and passion for music never failed to make you smile because there was nothing better than to see your loved ones doing things they love.
You were currently reminiscing about last night when both of you want on a walk around Rome that you didn’t see Harry entering the dressing room until you felt his arms sneaking around your waist.
“Hey,” you closed your eyes, taking in the scent of his cologne. Your body relaxed under the warm embrace of your boyfriend.
“Hey beautiful,” Harry turned his head so that he could kiss you on your temple. “You look stunning,” he gave you a gentle squeeze before he pulled away and taking your hand into his own, he made you do a little twirl. “Absolutely gorgeous,” his smile grew wider when he saw that his compliments made your cheeks turn pinkish. He loved seeing you like this, especially if he was the cause of those pink tones showing up on your face.
He was just about to cup your cheeks to give you a proper kiss but you grabbed his wrists trying to stop him from doing that. “Shouldn’t you be going on stage in a few?”
Harry chuckled and proceeded with getting closer to you. “Maybe,” his voice was lower at that point as his lips were now closer to yours. “But I still have a few seconds to give my girlfriend a kiss,” your lips touched briefly, “or two,” he kissed you once again but this time he didn’t hold back. Gently taking his wrists out of your grasp, Harry placed his hands on your waist, tugging you by the belt loops so your body was now pressed against his. You wrapped your arms around his neck, deepening the kiss as your fingers weaved into his hair.
When both of you felt out of breath, Harry rested his forehead against yours. “I wanna take you out tomorrow” he said making you frown a bit in question.
“Haven’t we already agreed on going out?” You asked, you fingers still gently tracing circles on the back of his neck.
“Yes, we have,” Harry pecked your lips before pulling away to look into your eyes. “But I want to take you out on a proper date. I want to buy you flowers, pick you up from your hotel room and take you to the best Italian restaurant. I want to kiss you whenever I want to and take you out on a walk under the starry sky,” he started painting this beautiful picture in your head, making the corner of your lips lift. Harry was not only a gentleman but he was an incredible romantic guy, you loved it about him. “So? Would you make me the happiest man on earth and agree to go on a date with me?”
It didn’t take long for you to nod your head. “Of course,” you said and in a second Harry picked you up as he couldn’t contain his happiness. The truth was that Harry had been planing this day for a few weeks now. As much as he was sad about performing his last concert of this tour, he couldn’t wait to have more time to spend with you.
Part 2 coming soon
