Elusive Magic

Gale x Tav (Gerald the Oath of Ancients Palladin)

Gale felt giddy as Theo unleashed the final firebolt, reducing the robed skeletons into ash and piles of inert bones. The battle had been brusk, invigorating. He shook out his hands and wiped the sweat off his cheek, leaving a streak of soot from the remains of his own firebolts. He couldn’t stop grinning as he remembered the way his mage armor had evaporated each ice ray blasted by the vile undead. This battle had been a symbol of his prowess, and nothing proved that more than the little illusions that had distracted their enemy exactly as it should.

Gale turned, chest puffed and eyes sparkling to examine his handy work. As he turned, his ear caught the quiet rumble of his companion’s voice just as he noticed that lumbering tiefling crouched before his illusion. One calloused palm was held in offering, sturdy shoulders soft as if he was trying to make himself as small as possible.

“Battle isn’t safe for you, little one,” Gerald said in a voice as soft as old leather. “Where did you come from?”

Gale would have normally chuckled in bemusement, taunting the intelligence of the buffoon who’d fallen to his illusory trap.

Instead, Gale moved forward, curious about the expression of his companion. His experience so far denoted stoicism. Your usual fighter type with a dash of devotedly religious. He didn’t know which religion, hadn’t gotten many answers from the quiet man with the flaming sword.

“Come on little gu—oh!” Gerald leaned, hand reaching to pet as if he’d read a sign of invitation in the car’s demeanor. When his hand passed right through the illusion, he pitched forward just as Gale reached him.

Gale caught hold of Gerald shoulder, helping the tiefling to balance. “Careful there my inquisitive companion,” Gale said through a bite of laughter. A light-hearted taunt sat on the edge of his tongue, but died immediately as those puzzled brown eyes lifted and Gale was blasted with a wave of pure earnestness.

Clearing his throat, Gale gestured to the cat, showing Gerald the sigil he traced with one hand to dismiss it. “Illusion magic is a useful thing, is it not? Pure weave, formed from memory. I’ve been working on this trick for a good year and a half. A very effective tool while in battle if I do say so myself.”

Gerald studied Gale and then the space that his illusion left behind. It would have been disarming were Gale not so curious about the intention behind this surprisingly gentle giant.

Finally Gerald’s eyes met Gale’s, fire warming the golden brown color of his irises. “So the cat is safe then?” he asked, bottom lip worried between his teeth.

Gale squeezed the sturdy, armored shoulder, an emotion he couldn’t express bubbling up in his chest.

“Ah, yes. The cat is safe,” Gale found himself saying.

“Oh mu~scles!” Astarion’s lilting voice broke past the confusion, turning Gerald’s attention to the back of the crypt. “We could use your help opening a heavy sarco~phagus!”

Gerald stood, Gale’s hand drifting away from his shoulder trailing faint blue threads of Weave from his fingertips. He wished suddenly that he had some magic that he could push into that sturdy body, bolster him as he trotted away.

Gale shook his head, tugging on the Weave once more to form an ethereal cat at his feet. “Don’t get into any scuffles while we’re gone,” he informed it, smiling softly as he passed the toe of his boot through one of its legs. Then he followed Gerald into the musty depths of the ancient temple.

Would you play Link, Zelda or Ganon in Baldur's Gate? I imagine Link as a fighter or ranger, and Zelda as a cleric. Ganon could be fun too with Orc Barbarian 🙈🙈🙈

I ACTUALLY thought about Ganondorf type of character to try later on, maybe even with Dark Urge bc... yeah, it's something suitable for him
