Listening to the Wizard, Witch and the Wild One pre-campaign...
Are we really...truly getting the proper archetypal Paladin roleplay? With emphasis on honor and protecting the weak treated with utmost sincerity? No gimmicks, no paladin-boy scouts, no taking paladin levels for mechanical benefits with the barest sugarcoating of paladin tenets somewhere on the side? Played by Lou Wilson, DMd by BLM?
Can I like, ascend now or what?

July was a heck of a good reading month, and I've well and fallen into a historical romance hole. Both series by Allie Therin were *especially* good.

it's kinda funny to me that bg3 fandom is not immune to "all paladins are goody two shoes" belief even though the only paladin in the party is like. minthara

We all have that one character that has gone through unbelievable tragedy… that's old woman Jys’yr for you (there's a reason why she’s part of the Tragedy Trio).
High level fighter/paladin. Acts as “Eilistraee’s Hand of Vengeance"*. Has survived so many assassination attempts (She laments that despite her age, her body won't yield) ((and by that she just beats the shit out of anyone that tries to even touch her)).
*Title gained from infamy

I have a theory/fanfiction about why we aren’t getting as many “low fantasy”/historical/not flashy armors and it’s just that. We only get like 8 sets per year. Whoever is designing these is probably to make these “cool” and “worthwhile”…. But I want more normal things!!!! Give me a frogmouth helm!!!!!
That is a good point yeah!! I can imagine the modern clothes do sell much better, there was so much hype around the swimsuits and recent skirt/socks for example (from myself included!!).
There's another game I play where the devs have said outright that they have to make bigger, flashier items because the smaller more plain ones simply don't do as well, so it isn't worth it from management's point of view. Which makes sense! I feel like game dev is a delicate balance, especially for an MMO.
I will say we've been getting some very nice earnable skins, though, so I wonder if it'll be gemstore = cool "modern" clothes, and achievements / crafting = more "realistic" fantasy skins, as a trend going forward.

One way in which, I think, BG3 succeeds in emulating tabletop DND experience - though, admittedly, It may be more of an achievement of its writing rather than game design - is sending player characters down unexpected development paths.
My favorite ttrpg experience have always been the moments when you realize that through the interaction between other players' actions, your own choices and the ongoing story, your character has now developed traits that you did not originally intend for them to have.
Those really are fascinating moments, ones that have always been difficult to explain to people who never experienced them - even though the mechanic between them is very simple and non-mystical. Something happened that you did not expect, and you react in the ways you may not have expected either! It's trivial, but the result is quite magical - when you see a character escape beyond your full control, becoming something onto themselves and making you not the sole master of their story.
Anyway, shoutout to my first BG3 playthrough, where my hoity-toity noble paladin - who had a whole dramatic arc from the stock of "difficult relationship with a position of leadership that awaits him in a distant homeland" set up for him - awkwardly confessed to Karlach, got politely rejected, went off to sulk, had Lae'zel come onto him, apathetically agreed and then proceeded to have his brains fucked out so hard that it completely changed the direction of his story and had him fighting on the frontlines of a space revolution not even a full month after.
