I'm not gonna lie when I started Persona 3 i wasn't particularly invested in Akihiko. Definitely wasn't planning on romancing him. Then I encountered the most insane piece of dialogue. I haven't been the same since. It haunts me.

My current tier list of the Ace Attorney games. In case it's hard to see which is which (+ also for screen readers):

I really need to replay the sequel trilogy, because I know for a fact I only played DD and SoJ once each when they first released (and so much more time has elapsed since then than I realized, oof), and while I feel like I started an AJAA replay awhile ago, I can't remember when that was + I think I stopped on the fourth case for some reason. (Not because of the video recording of the concert, lol. I honestly think there was another reason. My memory is really fuzzy though, so I'm just not sure what that reason was. But I don't think it had anything to do with the game, I think it was a real life reason.)

Anyway, once I replay those games I'll be able to place them more firmly on this tier list. This is just where my feelings about them are at right now -- that I loved DD despite whatever flaws it has, I'm pretty sure I was really vibing with AJAA a lot on my replay before I stopped, and the only life preservers that saved SoJ from getting an F tier created for it were "The Magical Turnabout" and Rayfa. :) But we'll see how I feel when I get around to replaying them.

And then of course, the TGAA duology will be played at some point as well. I'm just not in as much of a hurry to get to that because I don't know those characters (yet) beyond the very brief interactions I had with the characters in the first case of the first TGAA, so I'm less motivated. But I'll get there eventually.

And I think I pushed Layton and his game into the harbor or something idk idk who he is.

Apparently I currently have 113 hours in Hector's playthrough; I wonder how much that would be if I wasn't writing enormous drabble posts on every single thing that happens. XD

Resuming our exploration of the House of Healing, where we left off discovering that it is full of corpses, several seemingly undead nurses, and someone named Malus Thorm who might possibly be a super nice guy but given his name I'm going to guess probably isn't.

All the documents here are painting a pretty bleak picture of the final normal days of the House's existence as Ketheric rolled in with Shar's darkness curse.

Stepping outside of the room where we left off...oh, gods, we can hear Arabella calling for her parents. :(

Hector is feeling terrible enough about this whole situation that I think he immediately drops everything and bolts for the sound of the voice, the others trailing behind him.

Arabella's eyes light on him at once as he shoulders through the iron gate separating them, and her expression brightens.

"Hey! I know you! You're--"

Before she can finish speaking, there is a low, dull roar and the ground around them explodes with shadow.

Two wraiths, like the ones that followed Oliver, burst from the ground with teeth-aching screeches, their long, monstrous claws shivering eagerly.

Hector starts backwards, reaching out to grab for Arabella's shoulder and draw her behind him, but she's already moving - forwards. A sharp, brilliant glow is rising around her hands and into her eyes.

"Twist 'em UP!" she barks with all the force she can muster into her piping, child's voice. In tandem with the movement of her hands, a wave of entangling vines bursts from the ground, wrapping around the deadly shadows and dragging them downwards.

Hector stares. Dimly he recognizes this as the same spell that Jaheira used to bind him at the Last Light. It is no mean feat for a refugee girl from Elturel.

As the spell completes, Arabella's shoulders sag and she sways gently to one side, nearly falling over. "Sorry," she mutters, looking up at him with exhausted, fearful eyes. "Takes the wind right out 'a me..."

Hector crouches down onto one knee so his eyes are level with hers, looking her over worriedly. What happened to you, child... "That's a powerful spell," he says softly. "Where did you learn to do that?"

Arabella shrugs. "That druid idol I took," she mutters. "It changed me. I can do all sorts of stuff now, not just the vines. I think real hard and say some loud words and then it happens. Mostly."

Hector frowns, glances over his shoulder at the others, but receives a round of shrugs in return. None of them are familiar with druid magic, least of all what manifestation of it might emerge from a stolen idol of Silvanus in the hands of a ten-year-old tiefling. Maybe Jaheira will know something about it...

"What are you doing out here?" he asks, returning his eyes to the child. "It's not safe." To put it mildly...

She straightens a little, more fear flicking back into her eyes as the adrenaline fades and the awareness of her dire situation returns. "I was looking...for mum and pops," she says nervously. "When Zevlor - when he--" She breaks off, swallows. "Well...there was an ambush. Mum yelled 'run!'...so we ran... I could hear 'em running behind me. 'Til I couldn't..." She shifts worriedly, then looks up and locks her eyes on his face desperately.

"Still can't find 'em - but I bet you can. You'll help me, I just know it!"

Oh, gods. He would. He would help her, if there was any help to be given. He would scour the place. It is bad enough what he and his companions go through, but to see these children exposed to the horrors of this place...

But he already knows the answer. "Your parents...are dead," he says, as gently as he can muster. "I'm sorry to say..."

He reaches out to try to put a hand on her arm, but she jerks backwards with a flare of fear-driven fury. "You lie!" she snaps out. "They're out there! And if you won't find 'em, I will!"

(A/N: Pause for context: I don't like this scene as written in the game, at least for Hector. The phrasing of "Your parents are dead, sorry to say," as the only way to articulate the state of things is already a bit blunter than I would have liked, but this is then followed up with two different options for speech checks to get Arabella to come to the camp: [PERSUASION] "They're gone, Arabella - but you have a new family now. Come to my camp." and [INTIMIDATION] "People die, and that's that. You can stay in my camp if you quit your blubbering."

The intimidation check is SUPER clearly not Hector, but the persuasion one feels weird for him too. Who the hell is he to tell her that he and his weirdo (affectionate) companions are her new family IMMEDIATELY after she learns that her parents are dead?

And in passing the persuasion check, Arabella just like...goes along with it, which also feels weird for her.

Generally speaking I love the writing in this game and I almost never modify existing dialogue in these liveblogs, only add to it, but we are going to pretend Hector got to phrase this differently. :P )

He catches one arm around her before she can dart away, and she lets out an inarticulate noise of frustration, beating at his arm to try and knock it aside. But she knows the truth, and all her fury won't make it untrue, and soon the rage begins to ebb, replaced with grief. Her little body shakes gently and she sags against him, turning her face away.

"I'm so, so sorry, lass," he mutters. What can he even say? He has never even known his parents to mourn them; he cannot possibly understand what she is going through. But he can feel the grief in her and that, especially as of late, is an emotion he can understand, nevertheless.

"I mean to find Zevlor and any others who survived, and bring them out safely if I can," he goes on softly. "But in the meantime...you can't stay here, Arabella. It's not safe, even with your new tricks." He offers her a slight, cautious smile. "You can stay with my friends at my camp for now. You'll be safe there. And my friend Halsin...he can help you with those spells of yours..."

She sniffles against his shoulder. "Halsin? The druid from the grove?"

"The very same. I can't leave you out here, lass. Come on."

There's a long silence. Then she nods against him wordlessly. He lets out a slow breath and stands up slowly, not letting go of her hand.

"I'll keep an eye on her when we're in camp, too, Soldier," Karlach says in an undertone, looking down at the young tiefling with concern in her eyes. Then she grins crookedly. "Damn, Hec, one night's sex and already you're saddling us with a child. Most men have the decency to wait nine months..."

The joke breaks the tension just slightly and he blushes, managing a slight grin as well. "Just long enough to see she's safe," he mutters in return. "Gods, I wish there was more I could do."

"It's enough for now," she answers with a nod.

"Poor tyke," Gale puts in softly. "That's powerful magic for someone her age to be carrying about. I would know; the stories I could tell you." A pause. "But perhaps that's better saved for a lighter morning. For now, let's just get her somewhere where there's less call for tying the local shadows to the ground."

Shadowheart steps up to Hector's side abruptly. "She isn't blessed as we are," she says bluntly. "Here." She pulls the Lanthandrian mace from her back, its solid, reassuring glow pulsing in the Sharran gloom. "Take this, girl," she says to Arabella, not unkindly. "And keep it close. The light will...keep you safer."

She feels Hector's eyes on her and glares at him, daring him to say anything about it. "I've been carrying that relic long enough," she says, slightly too sharply, with a dismissive shrug. "About time I passed it off."

"Mmmhm," Hector says agreeably, pointedly ignoring it as she rolls her eyes at him. "Of course."

that nintendo direct was so horrible.

it was literally like 80 percent remakes and remasters.

never in my life have i seen an announcement video exist just to say "every game you've ever known since the 90s is being remade/remastered, sorry, we ran out of originality".

literally like all the video game market is anymore is remakes and the movie industry is just as bad.

the nso releases are fine because they're not like, remakes taking up full game slots. they're old games that are being made accessible and that's great... but there's no need to remake this many games when they can do that. remakes used to be rare. remember stuff like the wii u shop and stuff? with all the games they had on those things? now it's a tiny selection and everything else is a remake :/

also I feel like a lot of new rpgs are just like... lowkey fe knockoffs now instead of original rpgs.

i'm happy for like... two existing remakes, but one of them is mario rpg which people wanted waaaaAAAAAYYYY before the remake and remaster era, and the other is baten kaitos which im not actually happy about remaster-wise (the updated ui is trash, they took out very specific charms of the original ui), just happy that it will get more recognition/notice from people since it was never popular.

they also completely removed the english voice acting which like okay yeah it wasn't always that great but the voices fit perfectly and it wasn't as bad as fans meme on it for! it just sounded like they were talking through a tube and that was actually the worst part of it lol.

someone suggested to me that they may have just lost the data for it, but idk. i wish they'd just admit that somehow if it was the case, because it bugs me that the english audio is just completely gone when ultimately i really liked it. i wanted the game to be accessible to newer players, sure, but i also wanted the english audio there. ig that's because i grew up with it and i liked it, but it's still such a bummer for me!

paper mario being put on the nso and tyd getting a whole remaster does make me sad tho bc it feels like they're leaving the original in the dust when it was so good. if you're gonna do tyd, at least do them both.

good for innersloth though, i'm sure they never imagined being on a nintendo direct. they're the real winners here.
