i'm collecting my creations for each month under the cut but let's look at some fun statistics at first! (inspired by antania's post ♥)

i created 68 edits

additionally, there were 5 photo collabs (jimmysea photoshoots)

and 4 text post meme posts (for last twilight)

the most edits i made in may (due to our skyy 2 episodes)

most of my edits were related to vice versa (13 in total)

the second most popular ones were bad buddy (8 edits) and last twilight (10 edits)

most of my edits were either lovely/warm or angsty

i got deep into episode edits this year

and also took inspiration from other than poetry and lyrics

January

my most popular edit was this vegaspete set i made for @spicyvampire ♥ i actually like it a ton! but my personal favorite from this month is my bad buddy characters + the real 5 love languages set. i like the meme a ton and i loved how the set turned out (+ for me, it's super funny).

February

my most popular edit this month was the toddblack differences edit i made for @i-got-the-feels ♥ it was a very different type of edit and i'm very happy ppl liked it this much. personal favorite is this jimmy(sea) set for the varitda mv he/they appeared in. i loved the aesthetic of the mv and i feel like i captured that very well.

March

the most popular edit in march was my akkayan + one direction piece dedicated to @fitfmybeloved ♥ i think i need to make something else with a similar style sometime. my favorites would be the puen & talay's top 10 outfits edits which technically happened in february and march. i had a ton of fun with them and i honestly adore looking at the results.

April

my birthday month! the most popular creation was my beyond evil edit which was interesting to make according to @nongnaos's request ♥ i had never edited this show (or any kdrama) before and i also struggled a bit with figuring out the layout. it's a very simple set but felt fitting. my favorite this month would be this puentalay set made for you antania ♥ it took a lot of time, especially all the coloring, but it was worth every second! (special mention for my sea bday set which i still cannot believe the bday boy actually saw and liked on twt ;; i love him so much!)

May

i think it's very deserved that my most popular edit in may was this puentalay one for my our skyy 2 episode edits series. it's for the first vice versa episode and tbh also my personal favorite out of all those episode edits i made ^^ the coloring just worked super well there. my true favorite of the month was the pran's life anthem edit i made for @pransobrave ♥

June

as is fitting for pride month, my most popular edit and also my personal favorite was my our skyy 2 couples edit where i tried to describe all of their different loves through the colors of a rainbow. it was a lot of fun to do!

July

the most popular edit this month was the pran set i made for @punpunsutatta ♥ i had a lot of fun with this one bc i got to try some new things with it. personal faves and my peak as an editor (in my own opinion) were the two puentalay edits i made this month. this sam smith song inspired one i made for you zey ♥ i adore the layout and the colors, it makes me think about vintage images and letters. and this other one was born bc the quote haunted me. i love the pink in it a lot, it's so soft.

August

for august, i felt like i was making a ton of things even if i didn't have the energy or the time. in reality, i didn't make that many but i made a couple of very big sets. one of them and the most popular one this month was my winteam set made for @jimmysea ♥ making it took some research and then i had to go through the episodes a little while i searched for the fitting scenes. personal favorite was this akktheo set bc it turned out looking very cute. i think it captures their feeling as a couple and their story well. special mention for my jimmy bday set bc i poured my heart into it ♥ i love this man so much (and i currently wish he is fine and gets well soon, he's apparently in the hospital ;;)

September

things got hectic in september as i started my internship and had to travel around a lot. i was too tired to do much else but work and study and watch dramas without any brain. that's why i only made two edits. my most popular set was my last request edit for my event. it was patpran with the lyrics from ford arun's song come closer and made for @celestial-sapphicss ♥ i love the colors in this so much. personal favorite, only barely, is still my puentalay + 8 types of love set. i had a blast making it as a kind of collab with @dimpledpran who made the patpran version!

October

made only two edits (or well, one cut into two parts) in october too due to being very busy and tired. they were quite big tho bc i used a long while gathering material for them. it was its own type of research project when i wrote down all the times puentalay told each other 'i love you' without saying those exact words to each other. i struggled with the layout too as mimi can probably remember :'D but i love these sets a lot so they're both my favorite and most popular ♥

November

finally in november last twilight came to save all of us and so it's no wonder i created a lot for that during this month :'D i honestly wished to make more but i was still mostly busy with my internship and with starting my thesis. my most popular one was this last twilight trailer edit. i think it was fun to kind of make it similar to my mock trailer edit all that time ago. my personal favorite is the mork + linkin park edit that probably caters to only myself lol. am honestly obsessed with each song mentioned in this bc i can see it with mork so well. it was a relief to get that one out.

December

haven't really had the time to dive as deep into last twilight and make as many edits for it as i'd wanted due to using most of december to catch up on sleep and all the studying i couldn't do during my internship, but hopefully now i'll have more time to devastate yall ♥ the most popular post was this last twilight + random tweets thing and my personal favorite is the only morkday quote edit i've managed so far. i love the colors and the whole concept to bits, and cannot wait to make more ^^

i was tagged by @sandushengshou @khaotunq @baek1nho and @chickenstrangers to post my top/favorite creations from each month of 2023! thank you all so much for thinking of me <33

doing this loosely and with director's commentary bc i can never resist

january: my top set is this winteam hugs one. man i struggled so much with maintaining quality while trying to do that yellow to blue gradient coloring down the set. i definitely remembered it as looking worse than it does though, so i was pleasantly surprised to see that no it looks pretty good actually. probably also my favorite from that month since the others are very basic but honorable mention to my chinzhilla set cause i gotta shout out my beloved namesakes

february: top is jimbo the gogurt cat 😻 february was a slow month for me gif-wise so there aren't that many to choose favorites from, but it's probably my eclipse rewatch ep4 for the coloring

march: well uhh march was even slower than february i have two whole posts from that month and they're both eclipse rewatch sets (this was when my old laptop died and i spent like 3-4 weeks without photoshop). top and fav for this month is the eclipse rewatch ep5

april: top is akkayan in the first our skyy 2 trailer and fav is .... akkayan in the second our skyy 2 trailer (the quality of these is so much better how did i manage to make those first gifs look so bad 😅). honorable mention to my coloring in the eclipse rewatch ep8

may: ahh the our skyy 2 days...take me back..... top is every akkayan kiss as it should be. which i think is also my top post on this blog. as it should be. fav is vegas x it's about time (tw for glitch effect/flashing). there's some stuff there that i would go back and change cause i don't think it comes across great in retrospect, but i'm still really pleased with all the technical details

june: top was minoru's heart eyes part 3 (a gif series i WILL come back to shortly - i think the bleak midwinter is the perfect time for an odt rewatch). fav is akk x identity, but god would i go back and redo the typography and layout of the lines/text boxes (iirc i was like. minutes away from missing the deadline on this event so). still very pleased with the blending and what the set actually conveys though

july: oh look another gif series i've put on hold.... top is word of honor rewatch ep1, fav is tied between kp pretty boys (a set which is very pretty itself, if i do say so myself, and was very fun to make) and lomfontien kiss details (truly one of my all time favs on this blog even though it's so simple also everyone please go watch la pluie right now thank you)

august: bombastic side eye: the series takes the cake this month, which was SUCH a fun set to make (as was its spiritual companion, objectifying him to filth, which trailed by only about 30 notes). fav was charn vs wkx quotes. i honestly think i nailed it both conceptually and aesthetically

september: top is the first kanaphan drinking straw cinematic universe which continues to delight me whenever it shows back up in my notifs. fav is tied between cursed sandray parallels (tw glitch) (because it was one of those where as i was making it and inflicting emotional damage on myself, i knew it was going to be delightful inflicting that damage on others, and it was) and sandray x it will come back (mostly for the neon text and its reflection in the first two i just think it looks really good)

october: top was sandray love scene details (tw flashing) which was basically a rip off of my lomfontien kiss one from july but this one was much more successful lol. favorite is only friends x shameful company (tw flashing) (which now i can't look at without thinking of the sign skdjfds). really happy with the cards gif in particular

november: the guynawa kiss won november and they deserved it. my favorite was jim x loss which took me foreverrrr and i redid the last two gifs like three times but it was worth it. also shoutout to my dan x shadow post for all the 'wait there's actual monsterfucking in this show' reactions it elicited

december: top is phayatharn ep1/ep2 parallels and i have to take back what i said about every akkayan kiss being my top post - this one beats it by three notes! which surprised me but i'm glad we're all in this madness together with these two. fav has got to be morkday x come closer (tw flashing) if only for how much i beat my head against a wall over it during the creation process skdjfskj. although i also really love this set of tharn's sexy dream (nsfw) specifically because i added an offset pink layer and i'm OBSESSED with the way it looks with phaya's tattoo

if you read all that.. thank you and also i'm in love with you. anyways it was super fun to look back on everything i made this year! and interesting to realize i'm not nearly as prolific as i thought, especially in the first half of the year. here's to many more gifsets in 2024!!

Make it Right 1&2: It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it – my reflection on the show as a newbie.

In brief: I am attempting to understand how Thai BL has changed, and just generally catch up, by watching ABL’s understand the history of Thai bl list on the Thai master post. I’m more interested in the growth and change of shows and characters (and tropes) than the tracking of different actors/directors, although I enjoy reading about those things. I am concurrently understanding the history of all BL by watching the Foundation Syllabus lists as well. Not everything has been or will be reviewed. These are my own thoughts, I am not expecting everyone or even anyone to agree.

Also, the only Thai BL I have watched older than 2019 were the earlier parts of those lists (Love of Siam, Love Sick 1 & 2 (BL cut) and SOTUS, SOTUS S + Our Skyy). I have only seen about a dozen younger ones, hency why I am watching these lists. Everything is fairly new.

The Good

This main story, about boys falling in love and leaning into those relationships in a way that isn’t necessarily reflective of reality but instead shows what life might look like if young men leaned in rather than out, was GREAT. @bengiyo I really appreciated this lense.

I absolutely want to start here because the relationships of Frame&Book, Tee&Fuse, Yok&Mo and even Rottung&Nine were exciting and engaging stories told across one or both seasons. They were old with a meaningful rawness that @lurkingshan and @waitmyturtles both discuss in their posts about Make It Right 1 & 2. The characters journeys and choices felt real to a world where men aren't as forced away from each other and themselves by societal and peer pressure.

I went in mentally prepared for some of the biggest issues I’d seen mentioned (general cringeyness, alcohol-induced sex, arguably non-consensual sex, and for the second season, depression and suicide). I had skimmed @waitmyturtles post about season 1 and @lurkingshan's post about season 1, and I was looking forward to the show

Some highlights:

The friendships (I absolutely LOVE boys who are besties with some boys and in love with others. The idea that you can’t be friends with members of the genders you’re attracted to is dumb. The idea that boys shouldn’t support each other and talk about their lives with each other is dumb. I love that this show and others are repping it for genuine and meaningful friendhsips.)

The main relationships especially Frame&Book. (see @lurkinshan’s post about season 2 in particular for excellent recaps, I’m not going to go into details).

Actual quotes I sent to @waitmyturtles while watching:

Frame just told Book that he's a beautiful star whether far away or up close and I'm ACTUALLY DYING FROM THE SWEETNESS

Fuse’s chaotic bi-ness. You kind of want to shake him by the middle of season 2, but it’s also just so fun to watch.

The Struggle

What I wasn’t prepared for, was how much I had to work to love this show.

Frequently throughout season 1, and the first half of season 2, I had to keep asking myself:

Why am I uncomfortable? Why am I uncomfortable? Why am I uncomfortable?

And sometimes, it took multiple episodes of discomfort to pinpoint (one of the multiple) reasons I was cringing. It actually got more challenging as I watched, because I’d find a reason, reflect, reframe my thinking (or modify how I watched the show) and get back into it, only to knock into a wall of discomfort again. It was similar to the struggle you might have beginning a good show where something about the start doesn’t quite gel, but over and over and over again.

FRUSTRATING.

(I literally wandered off between episodes 6 & 7 of MIR 2 to go watch all of What Did You Eat Yesterday (before watching tokyo in april is...)(twas great) just to get a break. Then I read some season 2 recaps from @lurkingshan here and @waitmyturtles here and decided that yes, it was worth the effort) - the last 5 or s episodes were totally worth it FYI

So here are some things I struggled with:

(In writing this reflection, I’ve found some had intertwined or central causes I didn’t notice at the time, so hopefully this makes sense.)

Frame’s overt casualness towards sex (Thinking reframed after S1 Episode 6 I think)

Frame initially felt very predatory to my teenage conditioning. I already made a post about it. It got better after episode 6, but I don’t know if that was because I fixed my brain or if Fuse became less overtly sexual since he started pursuing Book.

(Side note, even before I figured out the problem, I was so pleased with his ability to talk about sex with a medical professional in S1 Ep5, and that was a weird discordance in my brain because the reason Frame was comfortable talking about the issue caused by sex, is because he was comfortable having and talking about sex. Whereas, in my experience, there is this expectation that teenagers (and adults) should be comfortable having these conversations regardless of their experience or comfort with sex in other contexts. Which you should be able to talk to a doctor but you can't just switch tracks in your brain so easily.)

I thought I hated all the girls on the show (I was wrong, but that was my original conclusion)

it was this point that caused me the longest discomfort because WHY? What was I reacting to? Jean was meh, Jiang (Fuse’s sister) was fine (this was pre-introduction of Jean’s not a bestie and Tee’s Mum). Christina was great. What was I reacting to??

It turns out that it’s because both Lily and Yok’s mum are adult women acting in ways that felt predatory to me. I actively hated the show anytime one of them appeared on screen, and that was not a fun emotional response to have.

Lily: I am not sure how old this character was supposed to be, but she’s not in school, and she was tricking Wit into giving her his number and then seemed to be stalking him.

Yok’s mum: She comes across a random teenage girl (who she knows NOTHING ABOUT) and approaches her to PAY HER TO SEDUCE HER SON.

Honestly, Yok’s mum was the worst since Lilly was barely in it. The weird storyline with Wit in the second season also felt very odd. Plus, I found it super confusing that she was this dictating overbearing parent and yet when she was injured, Yok just casually started ordering her to stay home and have Wit take care of her, and she just…agreed (am I missing something?)

Jean: To be honest, she didn’t bother me nearly as much. She was a manipulative teenager who wanted the cool older boyfriend while keeping her nice safe boy on the hook, classic 1-dimensional teenage girl, easy to ignore.

I have no idea what happened with Lily or Yok’s mum in the latter part of season 2. I started actively skipping whenever they appeared on the screen. It did wonders for my engagement because hating anytime they appeared on the screen seriously impacted my viewing experience.

I’d have preferred they didn’t show up at all

The characters are young. (reframed mid season 2)

Shocking the teenagers in high school are, in fact, teenagers who’d have thunk it? But when it turned out Book had had sex two years earlier, my brain was like, WAIT, WHAT? How old are these characters right now? I’d been assuming about 16, which turned out to be accurate (they are in the 11th grade in s2, making them probably 16 at the start of season 2), which means Book’s sex tape is when he was 14. Now do I personally know people who became sexually active at 14? Yes. Does it kind of weird me out on a personal level because at 14 I hadn’t even hit puberty? ABSOLUTELY (seriously, people thought I was like…9).

A father in a story I once read (yes, it was a fanfic) said something like this to his underage son:

“Yes 18 is an arbitrary line, past the point many teenagers are ready, but isn’t it better for the one’s who aren’t ready to be protected by the law even at the cost of you having to wait?”

And my uh ?19? year old self latched onto that idea with a retrospectively concerning lack of nuance.

However, that idea is very black and white on one hand, and patently unrealistic on another. Understanding that teenagers, even teenagers as young as 14/15, like Book was with his first boyfriend, do in fact, have sex is something I still find kind of confusing because of how completely uninterested I was about such things in highschool. (Especially at 14). But that doesn’t make it less true or less okay. Teenagers can have healthy sex lives and that’s okay (is a mantra I repeated to myself…more than once)

Yes it is becoming clear to me that most of my hangups are apparently around sex, hence this reflection.

Sex workers being friends with teenagers and suggesting sex with them (early season 1) - can teenagers have casual sex? (reframed here, now)

I was surprised by this one because I had made a conscious effort to dismantle inherent biases I harboured towards sex workers as a concept some years ago, and it was something that didn’t bother me at all when I watched 3 Will Be Free in May of this year. (Yay for growth)

Yet, when an adult women suggested Frame come back to her apartment, my brain went: WHAT NO! (seriously, my brain when WHAT NO so often it was exhausting)

I think this underlies a lot of the discomfort I felt with points 1, 2, & 3 on this list. While I have little to no issue with ADULTS having casual sex, Teenagers having casual sex, especially with Adults, is something that I’m not okay with being depicted (and I don’t mean consciously but unconsciously). Throw in some romantic feelings and I’m apparently fine (I love my age gap BL), but casual and that’s suddenly not okay?

I haven’t really settled on how I feel about this intellectually one way or another and the ambiguity of it all makes it hard to reframe this one properly. At what point does someone become an adult is not a question I’m suddenly going to be able to answer, especially because my personal experience of being a late bloomer biases me towards the older, the better. Also how I feel about it being depicted on TV is not the same as how I would feel about it in real life. However, the fact that (to my unconsciousness) it’s okay if romantic feelings are involved feels a little hypocritical. (If you click on the link @absolutebl talks about age gap issues in the context of Minato's laundromat (scroll down past epiosde 8, I had previously read this and it helped me when I was thinking this through)

I think this one comes from a place of some realism rather than exclusively sex-negative conditioning, which makes it harder to traverse. Adult’s brains are more developed, and an inherent power balance is involved when one party is relatively independent, and the other is not. I think I unconsciously believe romantic feelings reduce this power imbalance...not totally sure though.

The Crassness of it all (A constant and ongoing reframing of my brain)

Other things that made me cringe: (Shockingly these are largely about sex again)

Sex with strange women in the bathroom (Frame and Book early season 1) (also, they appeared to be adult women, sooo back to point 4)

Hooking up with strangers for sex (Frame and Book early season 1)

The forced sexual encounter (this one’s not on me) (Frame and Book early Season 1)

Lukmo and Yok exchanging numbers while taking dumps in the bathroom (early season 2)

Lukmo and Yok dream sex scene and actual sex scene (I don’t think this one is on me) (late season 2)

Boys watch porn in groups (do they actually this keeps coming up in shows?) (is there anything wrong with this if they do, other than how uncomfy it makes me to imagine…no)

These aren’t necessarily bad things, just things that made it harder for me to watch and that’s what I’m reflecting on so…

The inherent Misogyny

I had the exact same problem with Love Sick, so I wasn’t really fussed about this one. I just thought it was SO STUPID that Fuse was only able to justify breaking up with Jean after she’d been a bad person. Like if she was a good person, he would have to stay with her BECAUSE SHE’S A HELPLESS GIRL.

This was just adding insult to injury.

But real talk, Het relationships ARE often framed this way and it didn’t feel unrealistic to how boys may actually think/feel/have been taught so I wasn’t really mad about it specifically.

Why have I shared all this?

Because I think some people may struggle with Make It Right for more ingrained and complicated reasons than they realise. The obvious answers of non-consent, ‘bad’ humour and general messiness are right there as perfectly acceptable reasons not to watch.

Yet I prepared for that going in and I still had a really hard time watching this show.

I've watched higher heat BLs before, I'm not really sure why this one was so different. @lurkingshan comments on the rawness of the show in her post about season 2, maybe that's part of it? It felt less removed from my life I suppose, previous TV genres I have watched are basically fantasy and anime so I don't tend to watch shows with a strong sense of realism. Perhaps thiis one hit me more because it felt more real?

My hangups aren’t anybody else’s, but there is more societal pressure on girls to be chaste, to be demur, to be careful or wary of sex, at least in Christian cultures (Sex Negativity, it’s not fun). I already knew I internalised those messages more than most teenagers (Something I very much struggled with growing up is that young people are often taught with extreme messaging because ‘it’s the only way to get though to them’ and I’m a very literal person and I was very naïve on top of that so it tended to “affect me more than it was supposed to” (to quote an actual conversation I had with my mum)). (Example of this in a different context was learning about the dangers of alcohol when I was 12 and I went home and cried to my 19 year old brother because I thought he’d die from the occasional parties he went to…it sounds crazy but I was distraught).

But I think an argument could be made for less strong reactions to some of these same problems, negatively affecting the viewing experience for other people, especially a majority audience of young women. I think part of the reason I could identify the causes of my discomfort were because they were so strong. A Low-level buzz of ‘uhh, I don’t really like this’ is much less likely to make someone go: okay, but why?

(Side note, this has caused me to realise how much I haven’t reacted to sex negativity in shows like UWMA, I read about it as a concept later and thought: Oh, yeah, that is bad, but I did not even notice it while I was watching and I did not even notice that my lack of noticing might be a problem until now so…yeah…not good)

Final Thoughts: What did I think of Make It Right?

I adored the relationships.

I loved the friendships.

I enjoyed how much it forced me to reflect on my ingrained biases. It was growth and learning, sometimes more than I wanted, but growing is something I want to keep doing for the rest of my life.

But it was hard work.

Overall, I do recommend it, but only if you’re prepared to think about yourself, your feelings, the WHY of it all while you watch.

(also, you might just not like it for more obvious reasons and that’s okay too).

TOP 5 VISUALLY PLEASING VICE VERSA SCENES

(i ended up going with a mix of colors and framing and cinematography to pick these and IM STILL NOT FULLY CONVINCED)

1. the bucket hat reveal in episode 10. not only this is one of the most scenes in television history (second only to puentalay reuniting in episode 11), but it also takes the crown as the most visually stunning. the pink/red contrasting the black/blue is simply beautiful.

2. the glasshouse kiss in episode 4. I SWEAR IM NOT JUST FINDING EXCUSES TO KEEP POSTING THIS SCENE IT'S NOT MY FAULT IF IT'S PERFECT IN EVERY SINGLE WAY. one may ask, 'why didn't you pick one of the two other glasshouse scenes then', to which i say ONCE AGAIN NOT MY FAULT IF THE OTHER SCENES DON'T HAVE PUENTALAY DRESSED IN CONTRASTING COLORS AND PUEN HALF HIDDEN BY THE GREENERY BEING SLOWLY REVEALED.

3. talay drowning in episode 1. I KINDA FEEL BAD PICKING THIS SCENE SINCE IT’S TALAY DYING BUT. look at how pretty it is. when i see all these gorgeous shades of blue (with a hint of pink in some shots!!!!) i can understand talay saying “let me appreciate these beautiful colors a little longer.”

4. the secret island in episode 10. at first i didn’t want to put the same episode twice, however i just can’t leave out this scene if we’re talking about visual elements. color wise it may not be as remarkable as other moments (although the touch of green against the neutral tones of the sand and the sky and the water is [chef’s kiss]), but the cinematography here is honestly breathtaking.

5. friend credits reuniting in episode 6. this is a shorter scene compared to the others but i absolutely love the way they were able to highlight the yellow in such a clever way, not only with the lights but also with the sparklers and the curtains against the black and the white/light blue.

Thai QL Favorites Tag Game

Tagged by @telomeke – thanks for thinking of me!

Credit also: this game was created by @thatgirl4815 as Thai BL Favorites Tag Game.

Don't expect to get just one answer to any of these. :-)

Favorite Thai QL: I know 3 Will Be Free doesn't "count", but it's just SO GOOD. Also Moonlight Chicken, my first love, and Bad Buddy, which is such solid storytelling from beginning to end.

Favorite pairing: The recent posts by @waitmyturtles has really reminded me how TanBun from Manner of Death are absolutely unhinged in the best possible way, and also so thirsty for each other. Love them!

Most underrated actor: What do you mean Jennie Panhan isn't a massive star with a dozen leading roles? That's criminal!

Even further on the sidelines, Mark Pakin was such a cheeky little scene stealer in Moonlight Chicken (from that very first moment), but he had nothing to do in Bad Buddy, and I haven't followed his career but I hope he has more to do somewhere.

Also, there are a lot of reliable character actors in the older generation that I enjoy whenever they show up. I'm going to single out Jum Amata, who is in everything and always fun to watch.

Favorite character: I've got to say Li Ming from Moonlight Chicken. Such a well-developed role and powerful, nuanced performance, all coming from a teenager. I was impressed then, and I'm still impressed.

Favorite side character: Mae from 3 Will Be Free, come on!

And once again moving further to the sides to mention Fai from Together With Me, who really should have been a lesbian, and Tee from GAP, who was a lesbian and should have been allowed a side romance with Yuki. (They could have cut out some of the more repetitive scenes in the show to make room for it!)

Favorite scene in a QL: (*Pushes Korn dancing in Cupid's Last Wish aside.* Shut UP you're not my favourite!) I have to say Li Ming and Jim in Moonlight Chicken finally sitting down for a conversation, with Li Ming untangling his complicated feelings for his mom and shyly admitting that he loves his uncle.

Also, A Tale of Thousand Stars isn't in my top five or anything, but daaaamn that proposal scene in Our Skyy 2 was super romantic.

And yes, I'm aware I've just mentioned three of Earth's roles here. Your point?

Favorite quote in a QL: Right now, Kit asking his henchmen "Why are you pointing a gun at my son?" in Never Let Me Go is living in my brain rent-free because of what it says about their relationship, and I really ought to make a post talking more about that, but we'll see.

But the line that has had the most personal impact on me overall is probably Uncle Tong in Bad Buddy saying, "You may think one man can't change the world, but I want you to know that this world can't change someone like me either."

Most anticipated QL (and why): The four I've got on my to-watch that haven't been made yet are 23.5 (because more lesbians in general and MilkLove in particular), Last Twilight (more Aof, more disability exploration), Only Friends (more Jojo, more of several actors I like) and Dangerous Romance (more ChimonPerth). I don't want to single out one of them, because I have no idea which one will end up being my favourite!

Healthiest relationship in a QL: Apart from the first episode and a half, HeartLiming from Moonlight Chicken really had no problems with how their relationship was progressing. All their problems were external. It's so healthy that if they weren't a side couple it might even be boring!

Most toxic relationship in a QL: Bright/Farm in Together With Me, hands down. Nothing wrong with an open relationship, but don't do it like THAT (and especially not with an inexperienced kid young enough to be your son).

Guilty pleasure series: Guilt is not a meaningful emotion where entertainment is concerned.

Okay, okay, I do admit feeling a certain amount of guilt at how entertained I was by the trainwreck of Together With Me.

Most underrated series: Truth be told, the ones that make me wish the most for more tumblr posts are the non-Thai GLs I've been watching lately (Sleep With Me and She Makes My Heart Flutter). But of the Thai stuff, I suppose I agree that He's Coming to Me could use some more love.

Thai BL Favorites Tag Game

Tagged by @lurkingshan, @ginnymoonbeam, @incandescentflower and @recentadultburnout! Created by @thatgirl4815 as Thai BL Favorites Tag Game, and that's the name I'm playing it under because, a) well, it's all BL on my particular list, it'd feel disingenious to call it anything else except maybe Y Series because we're talking Thai audiovisual media specifically and b) I'm not entirely comfortable with the unilateral renaming of a genre which which originated and grew into its current forms in another cultural context. Don't get me wrong, I made the jump from calling it Yaoi to Boys Love to BL in the 1990s and 2000s; I know to say danmei and dangai (or boy boy) when talking about it in context of media from China/Taiwan, or Y series when talking about it in Thai. If fans and markets in the communities of origin change the names again, so will I. But for now I'm sticking with the term BL. Thanks for understanding.

Favorite Thai BL: @lurkingshan makes a great point with best vs favourite, and her contenders are also mine – is ITSAY my favourite? is Bad Buddy? I suppose if we go by times rewatched, Bad Buddy takes the crown; if it's "what do I rec other people with the least amount of caveats", ITSAY wins.

Current obsession: Laws of Attraction, with Be My Favourite as a close second.

Favorite pairing: I don't particularly like this type of industrially-pushed shoehorning of actors together as a general rule (let's not pretend Julia Roberts and Richard Gere or Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire weren't also a kind of fixed ship, and I know the Philippines does a similar thing with their (mostly het) love teams – this is not Thai BL exclusive, at least historically speaking), but it clearly sells, so I don't think the industry's going to move away from this model for a long while yet.

That said: tough, but I think it'll have to be Billkin and PP. Just. Look at them act together. Look. Whether it's ITSAY/LTIP/IPYTM and related material, or one of the advertisement shorts or the incredible music videos from last year or even My Ambulance – they're just. So!!!!

Most underrated actor: Fiat Patchata. Give that boy a main role, goddamnit.

Favorite main character: quoting @lurkingshan here:

Teh, I Told Sunset About You and I Promised You the Moon. Yes, both shows, and before you all come yell at me: I SAID WHAT I SAID.

because she's not the only one who loves this disaster of a boy.

Favorite side character: I really loved the friend group in Secret Crush on You, and Tin's friends in Triage.

Favorite scene in a BL: There are so many to choose from, but I'm going to go with the bus stop scene in Bad Buddy ep 3. The way brick shithouse Pat, all 180some beefy adolescent centimetres of him, turns himself into a cute girl at the drop of a hat … that rewired something in me, had me sit up and take notice (and block the Bad Buddy air time slot in my work calendar for the remain of the show's run time). Because they took it seriously. Didn't play it for laughs.

Favorite line in a BL: oh, there are so many. But I guess if we want to go with largest impact on me, personally, I'm gonna go with Thian in Khun Chaai going "May I love you, Jiu?" because. whew. That just hit me right in the feels.

Most anticipated BL (& why): Only Friends and Love in Translation. Only Friends because it looks to shake up a lot of the things we're used to from GMMTV in particular – I know we've had a little bit of flirting outside of the fixed ships this year already in Moonlight Chicken and Our Skyy 2, but if Jojo is going to shake it up more I'm very, very here for that. Love in Translation because the Thai title is รักไม่รู้ภาษา "Love doesn't know language" and languages are my jam.

Healthiest relationship in a BL: I don't really enjoy thinking about relationships in these terms because it just … urgh. I don't care if it's ''''healthy'''' (and seriously, who gets to decide what is and what isn't healthy, anyway? and why are we making this a moral judgement?)

Questions I do ask about relationships: Is the relationship compelling? is it believable? do the people involved behave like they don't only love and desire, but also like each other as people? that's what I want to know.

Most toxic relationship in a BL: see above.

Ginny suggested Relationship dynamic I would most like to have myself: and Relationship dynamic I would least like to have myself: to replace the "healthy" and "toxic" questions and I think that's fantastic, but I'm honestly blanking on both so I'm skipping this part.

Guilty pleasure series: I like what I like, I don't see a reason to feel bad about that.

Most underrated series: He's Coming To Me. It's such a lovely little show.

Favorite Thai BL:

The impossible question. Do I go with the one I've watched the most? Or the one I genuinely think is the best BL? Or the one I'd recommend to the most people!? What does favorite even mean?

Um.

Anyway.

I'd go with Tossara just because of how many times I've watched it and still love it beyond all words, honestly. So many other BLs tend to lose my with the ending or with the middle drama and the tiny perfect package of Tossara makes it a winner in my book.

As for my favorite that is also actually genuinely good... A Tale of a Thousand Stars. This show has a very special place in my heart, started on my birthday and is just all around one my favorite BLs and my favorite Our Skyy 2 episodes. I love the characters, I love the setting, I love the tone and them as a couple... just A+ all around.

Favorite Pairing:

Kan and Thua. Hands down. Expect to see these two mentioned again. Like, I love their story and their characters and just everything about them is so important to me. They are my most beloved and I don't think anyone soon will be unseating them.

Most underrated actor:

No idea? None? Who is even under or overrated? I don't know! Let's go with a pair of actors that I adore beyond measure and never got their true leading roles... Bank and Bonus. My beloveds. They played two of my top pairings for chaos and I love them so, so much. They made me love PokTong and the made me love MayonTengnueng. I have a special little spot for these two and seeing Bonus in Low Frequency always makes me happy.

Favorite Character:

My undying love for Ton is undying no matter the time. I love this boy and his deepseated but unfelt homophobia, I love how much he had to fight himself for every step of progress but how much progress he made as well. I love how much he loved and how much he hurt and how much he felt without ever really being able to label it or understand it without the support of everyone around him.

Is he perfect? Hell no. Do I love him? Yes.

... Look, my favorite characters tend to be side characters, okay?! I had to reach deep for this boy or it was just start listing boys from Vietnamese BL that didn't have side couples.

Favorite Side Character:

Kan. Forever. Frankly, he's my favorite character ever but he is technically a support character so he goes here. But this boy? This yearning, desperate, hurt and scared boy? He is everything to me. He grew so much and learned so much and found so much and I will never, ever leave him behind.

Favorite Scene in a BL:

Na and his sunglasses. Does this count? I don't know, if this doesn't count than nothing does.

Favorite Line in a BL:

I'm really sorry but I don't think I have one and if I do I don't remember it. Quotes are not my strong point and I tend to think in scenes/characters rather than lines from the show. And even the ones I do love don't tend to stick with me for long.

Most Anticipated BL (and why):

Dangerous Romance. Dangerous Romance. I am going to become the absolute wildest version of myself when that comes. BL Tropes and Class Commentary with tropes and social issues? My beloved! Yes, Only Friends has a lot to say but almost none of it will be in tropes so, you know, not my favorite. Very excited but this one? Everything to me.

Healthiest Relationship in BL:

Everyone in SCOY. Just... everyone. But especially my most precious SkyJao. I love them so much.

Special Mention to BeePrince, honestly, for being one of the best couples and healthiest, most open to each other relationships without actually being out because of social expectations and the way they just believed in their love.

Most Toxic Relationship in BL:

First place: PrapaiSky. No one can beat them out yet. He broke into his apartment and read his diary to him while he sobbed and begged him not to and had broken up with him. Nope. Nope, nope, nope. Nope. Just miles of nope.

Second Place: MorkPi. For the manipulation, emotional abuse and the way the show portrayed every selfish and unkind thing Mork did as his Only Choice. I hope Pi got out of that relationship.

Guilty Pleasure Series:

History 1: Obsessed. I love this little thing and it's not objectively that good and it's got so many issues and I don't even care because I love it so much. Absolutely imperfect and absolutely fucked up and full of not so good tropes but I still adore it.

Most Underrated Series:

I don't know? I don't know what other people think! I will put Tonhon Chonlatee here because, obviously, I love this little show. But what else?

Pretty much all Vietnamese BL falls under this umbrella but I give a special spot to You Are Mah Boy which is adorable and fluffy and pretty and criminally underrated by people. If you haven't watched it, it's all on youtube and you are sleeping on something wonderful. Not super deep but just so fun.

+BONUS Favorite Setting/Location:

This is rough. Like... what even do I say? I dunno?

I think my real answer has to be forests. I love characters and shots in forests just in general, they make me feel happy and they're different than the typical beach things we get. Forests are common here and I love seeing different forests and the different ways people around the world move in the forest. It's just great. But rare.

My other favorite is, oddly and against all appearances, bathrooms. Bathrooms and elevators. Scenes where the character have the illusion of privacy without it being totally private and with the chance of being interrupted but also we're just observing them? Love it. Thes are my favorite moments, the illusion of privacy knowing it can be broken at any second but needing that privacy enough to keep going even without that.
