I personally prefer to think that in Othertale, Asgore and Toriel stayed together. Even if they aren’t actually still in love, and even if superyoumna said differently, because I had the thought of:

how do monsters stay hopeful in the Underground when the human souls don’t exist? meaning Asgore either never planned to capture any human souls or that no humans ever fell, so what if the King and Queen staying together and trying to put on a front of still being happily in love and together even after the lost of their children at the hands of humans is an attempt to maintain morale, hope, and to also quell any monsters that were pushing for a war or pushback to humans murdering their Prince?

There’s that, and they probably start relying more on things like art and music and storytelling a whole lot more in order to distract from the thought of maybe they’ll never actually be free afterall, which is what led to Undyne getting so popular in the Underground to the point she had even the King visiting her concerts.

Finally, the fic I have been rambling nonstop about to @howlsofbloodhounds is here! Let's see how much of an absolute disaster I can make Color before someone decides to take him from me lmao

Summary:

The human was not gonna back down nor fight, and Sans, if possible, wanted to avoid a violent escalation of the situation as well. Because, despite the souls’ best efforts, his body had not yet recovered from his escape. Every single one of his bones ached, and he was almost certain that the cracks that already covered a majority of his skull had expanded.

However, the stalemate didn’t last long because, as it seemed, the human had an ace up their sleeve. The outline of a black soul manifested on their chest and, soon after, a bright red button with ‘RESET’ written on it appeared in front of them. Sans barely had the time to notice Killer’s eyes go wide and wonder why that was before the human pressed it.

Sans stumbled onto a snowy path with no grace, alone and lost in an unfamiliar frosted forest. Snowflakes slammed harshly against his bones. They looked so delicate and yet he could swear they left a thousand tiny cuts on him. It was torturous… and yet familiar.

That was the power of a human. No. That was the power of an anomaly.

Othertale Thoughts

I've been seeing a lot of posts about Othertale recently and I am so fucking hyped over it, cause I've loved that project for several years and felt like I was the only one who gave a damn about it until now.

I need to refresh my knowledge on Othertale again but from what I remember about the story that I seldom see many talk about are how the disappearances of Sans, the six human souls, and Chara's body, would affect the timeline.

And to be fair we already know there was some effect, we know Undyne took the "role" of Sans as Papyrus's older sibling, and she didn't end up joining the Royal Guard, becoming a pianist instead and writing her own music. Instead, it's Gerson that remained the Head of the Royal Guard.

So while we know what bandaid solutions the game utilized to patch the absence of Sans, what about Chara? What about the six human souls? How would their absences affect the timeline?

Technically Chara isn't actually gone from the timeline, not completely. It's just her (Chara is referred to with she/her in Othertale) body that's been met with oblivion thanks to Color's fuckery. Her mind and her "soul" in a sense is still present, and from what I recall of Othertale's animations, she possesses monsters in a vulerable state, whether they be dealing with isolation or social drama, they are in an unstable state of mind, and she uses them as hosts to target other monsters. Chara is supposed to be an antagonistic, sadistic force here, just like how the fanon perception of this character is.

But since Chara doesn't have a body and has more in common with... perhaps a poltergeist as far as characters like Undyne can speculate, what does her physical absence mean for the backstory of the Underground? What does this mean for characters who were previously supposed to be her family? What about Flowey?

Did the first fallen human just never show up? Would this mean Asriel is still alive and Toriel never left Asgore? Did Chara still find a way to interfere with that somehow? What would this mean for the state of morale in the Underground as is, minus the fear and apprehension spawned from Chara's current activity?

What about the Amalgamates, since Othertale doesn't have the six human souls either? Would their incident just never have occurred? I think so. But in the absence of any storage of human DETERMINATION, what's Alphys's role as the Royal Scientist supposed to bring now? What's she working on?

I finished it. So please, let me explain what this is.

First, it’s Undertale September, but I decided to just do everything at once. Second, I liked the idea of every character being from a different AU. This was pretty much randomly assigned, so I had to design a few of the characters that didn’t previously exist in the story. Third, I liked @tatatale​‘s Palette Challenge so I did every character in a different palette.

I have recently been consumed by thoughts of my latest long fic project (color-centric fic where he ends up in Something New right after escaping the void) and I need to rant about it somewhere, so here's some fun facts:

- Killer figures out that Color doesn't belong to their AU well before Chara does. His earliest sign of rebellion is not telling them about it

- Because of that, when Chara goes to reset the first time after meeting Color, Killer is actually somewhat disappointed about it (he really wanted to dissect the guy) since he assumes it's gonna send Color back to where he came from or erase him from existence. He doesn't say anything about it because he could never so directly defy Chara and the Player

- Color is a smart boy and he clocks that there is some kind of outside influence pretty much immediately from the smell of the AU (his and Killer's freaks very much do match)

- The Souls are really chatty and they're one of my favorite parts of writing this fic

- Perseverance and Chara are both romance-repulsed and they will suffer because of it since I cannot emphasize enough how weird Killer and Color are about each other from the get go. Someone needs to put them down I swear

- Color is also weird about Papyrus but in a very different way. His brother forgetting about him really fucked with his head and it's gonna show. A lot

- Color is also weird about Toriel, but to a lesser extent

- Color has so many issues... landing on Something New was definitely not great for him. Buddy needed some time to heal before helping anyone, but his stubborn ass will never once admit that. He'd rather die

- The only thing Color doesn't struggle with is intimidating Chara. They clocked in 0.1 seconds that he's not an opponent they can beat, even with all of their determination...

Someone please kill Color and Killer they’re so fucking weird. Ain’t nobody wanna see that you weirdos. Bury Your Gays but only these two in particular, because they’re so annoying. /aff

Chatty Souls is right up my alley. I have a feeling their commentary on Color’s actions and life is gonna be hilarious. (Especially any reactions to the Buttercup Duo.)

Color also being very weird about Papyrus and Toriel makes complete sense to me. Bro has a lot to unpack about his old life and his old identity and his old relationships of any kind. Assuming he’s accepted that it’s his old life yet at all.

I’m gonna eat this up as soon as it’s posted mark my words.

Thinking about the fact that Delta!Sans canonically is a plural character cuz he absorbed the Bravery soul and now they share a body and can canonically have soul-to-soul conversations and time kinda freezes for them when they do.

Thinking about how Ultratale!Chara is referred to as Omega and Delta is Delta and thinking about the kiddo tryna call themself Alpha cuz they’re “cool and manly and tough.” But somehow Delta manages to convince the kid to settle on being nicknamed Beta instead, symbolism of being a second-in-command and all that.

Thinking about Delta wandering by stores and getting distracted because the kid spotted some cool boxing gloves or action figures in the glass windows and then Delta shows up late to his meetings with Epic and Color, carrying bags of toys, because the kid started crying when Delta tried to leave without buying them anything.

Or whenever the Epic Sanses hang out, Delta always makes sure to order something sweet for the kid to enjoy because listening to “grown up talk” is boring and not fun and if he doesn’t Delta will be dealing with a headache all evening.

Thinking about Delta trying to keep the kid away from the worse of the fighting and all the worse things that the Multiverse has to offer, because the kid dreams about their death at Asgore’s hands and what it felt like being held in a container for centuries almost every night. But the kid always insists that they’re brave and tough and strong and they can handle everything.

Delta taking every opportunity he safely can to allow the kiddo to be a kid again. Decorating their shared room in their apartment in the Omega Timeline, making a spot in the corner designated for Beta. He sets time aside to allow them to partake in activities of their choosing, such as puzzles, strategy games, and competitive games.

Thinking about Color and Delta hanging up all of Beta’s drawings on their fridge like proud parents, and Color sometimes just sitting and listening to Beta yap to all the other six souls absorbed inside Color because, unlike Beta, they aren’t exactly their own full people anymore but it makes the kid feel less alone.

Letting the kid explore the surface and play in the sun whenever possible, as they spent who knows how many years trapped Underground in a jar. Maybe Delta even gets glimpses of Beta’s memories whenever they dream, the loneliness and claustrophobia of being trapped in a jar. The fear of being hunted down by monsters throughout the Underground and having to face down someone as intimidating as Asgore, the pain and fear of death, experienced through the eyes of a child. A very brave and strong child, but a child nonetheless.

Maybe Beta clung to the few embers of warmth they had when they were living under Toriel’s care, and Delta/Sans gets to see his friend in a new light, but also he gets to make true on his promise by at least keeping an eye on and taking care of Beta when he couldn’t for Frisk.

I think Delta possibly considers what happened to his Frisk a very deep and personal failure, made worse by the Toriel that Beta remembers—because Delta gets to see how much Toriel loved each and every fallen child and he can imagine the grief she felt when they all left and died. I’d like to think that AUs of Asgore, heights, spears, being alone, and enclosed spaces are all fears for Beta, so Delta always tries to reassure them even though they attempt to be brave every time.

So basically both of them are struggling with PTSD, and also Beta with the fact that they’re now in a body that isn’t their own after however many years of not having a body. And also the fact that any friends or family they might’ve had when they were alive are likely dead now, so I’d imagine that Delta would try to search down and visit any graves of Beta’s family whenever visiting Ultratale or any of its variants.

Beta proposes making graves for the residents of the Underground too, probably in the Omega Timeline. And given that Delta is friends with Epic who is friends with Cross who shares a soul with XChara, I can already imagine the trouble that XChara and Beta would get into.

I was looking at XToriel’s ref sheet and it mentioned dark purple magic/fire, got me thinking if Color’s purple flames from the absorbed Perseverance would remind Cross and XChara of XToriel or not

im thinking about how othertale mettaton seems to have gotten his body a lot earlier, is said to be more like a weapon than a star (undyne is the underground star in othertale), and in the bth pt1 animation mettaton seems to operate kind of like a bodyguard.

do yall think amber/alphys—who has a celebrity crush on Undyne and is best online friends with papyrus—might’ve sped up working on mettaton’s body so he could also help protect Undyne.

do yall think Undyne ever had to deal with parasocial stans? was there ever a genuine concern for her life and safety, especially if she gained so much attention that the head of the royal guard and the king would attend her concerts.

also. if the human souls no longer exist in othertale, although flowey does, does that mean that Toriel and Asgore are still married in othertale? Or did they still divorce after the deaths of their children, but more amicably? is Toriel still the queen?

Farmtale!Alphys, aka Lim Pyunghwa, is said to be Farmtale’s village’s local “Macgyver” who builds and repairs everything with whatever’s on hand and she graduated from an Engineering college. So I like to think she and Delta team up and also nerd out together whenever Delta stops by Farmtale to visit Color.

And because Farmtale!MTT, aka Ma Daedong, also apparently runs a guesthouse I like to HC that it’s where Color stays whenever he’s in the area. Maybe also any Star or Bad Sanses as well, if Saejun and Pilsu don’t already offer up their place.

Farmtale is Beta’s favorite AU to stay at not only because Delta gets to meet someone who shares his interests in engineering and Ma is giving Color shelter, but also because this AU’s Undyne (Dain Yun) is a gym teacher and this AU’s Toriel (Doriae) is an elementary school teacher and Beta likes learning and gym is their favorite class.

There’s also the small group of village kids—Suggu (Frisk), Chorongi (Chara), An Seungli (Asriel), and Gideugi (Monster Kid)—to play and hang out with.

There’s an urban legend that a ghost hunts the well where the villagers have to draw their water, and it becomes a sort of hazing ritual or a very common dare for newcomers to the village to be dared/made to attempt to steal the watermelons that the villagers leave for the ghost of the well. (This ghost is that of the dead Sutak, aka Napstablook.)

A common hang out spot for the village kids Muffet’s cafe and underneath the Dangsan tree that has been named Flowey.

Nice Cream Guy also encourages all the village kids and visitors to bother and play with the village scarecrow with promises it’s an actual scarecrow and will come to alive if you manage to do something to get a reaction from it. The village scarecrow is actually just Burgerpants, who hates his job even more now.

I found something that reminded me of Delta but I'm too shy to come off of anon, so I'll be translating the image to text.

Thoughts?

I had two. One, Color and Epic. Two, Ultratale Frisk.

I feel the Color one should be clear. The man is chasing after someone who dangerous and unstable, because Color simply can’t stand to sit around and do nothing when someone who is hurting has asked him for help.

This puts Color’s life in danger, his mental health, his safety. Potentially anyone Color is connected to if Nightmare is that petty to want revenge, which in turn fucks up Color’s mental health more and encourages him to keep moving on.

Of course, the trauma of being forgotten and trapped in the Void for who knows how long greatly effected Color’s issues with feeling trapped and always needing to stay on the move, but the need to chase after Killer and also avoid drawing Nightmare’s potential attention to anyone else close to Color is another motivation.

Delta gets first hand exposure to how everything with Killer and Nightmare affects Color. He’s very likely the one who tries to patch up Color’s injuries because Color doesn’t want to do it himself, he’s the one who calms Color down from panic attacks, nightmares, flashbacks, and meltdowns when Killer isn’t there to try.

He’s the one who sees the fear in Color’s eye when, after finally saving Killer, even losing sight of the other guy causes Color to tremble and overthink. Delta’s the one who hears about all the awful things Color had to watch be done to Killer, and he’s the one who hears Color’s fears that Killer will forget him one day.

Color isn’t often like this, he’s usually more laid back even if more prone to being grumpy. But Delta sees it all and tries his absolute best to support his friend when he’s struggling so much, and most days Delta can’t help but try to convince Color to stop. Chasing after Killer is killing him slowly, and it hurts Delta watch him deteriorate before his eyes.

(I’m also of the belief that being a witness to this type of stuff from both Epic and Color is precisely one of the reasons why the guy has issues with both Killer and Cross at first, outside of the whole crimes and murder. They hurt his friends and made him powerless to do anything but watch and try to convince them to care about themselves even half as much as they do about others.

Of course, this is mostly a subconscious thing Delta probably refuses to acknowledge or admit to himself at first because he’s aware that Cross and Killer weren’t doing it intentionally, but still. Emotions and trauma aren’t logical.)

Two, Ultratale Frisk. Delta seems to have taken it as a very deep personal failure that he failed to stop Frisk from having their soul absorbed, and he seems to think that’s precisely why everyone in his AU—the entire Underground—died. Because he was too lazy and sat on the sidelines, doing nothing but watching.

And dreaming about Toriel from Beta’s memories makes it so much worse—because of the promise he made to protect Frisk. Delta has grown to care for Beta himself, from Beta’s memories he can see just how much Toriel cared for both Beta and Frisk and therefore likely every other fallen child. How the grief and loss, over and over, would’ve impacted his friend, and how he was careless to make that promise to protect Frisk.

He looks at Beta, all their innocence and youth, and sees Frisk; what he failed to protect. What the entire Underground failed to protect, even. The children. The future.

Out of Frisk and Color/Epic, I think the only one he’ll ever be able to make peace with being unable to save is Frisk. Not only because it has already happened and he needs to move on, for his own kid now, for Toriel’s memory as well, because this is definitely what Papyrus would want for him—but because Frisk is a lesson—a reminder. To not let any of the other children be unprotected like that again, to try and protect them and by extension the Underground in other AUs.

He’d love to be able to protect Frisk like he should’ve, like he said he would, but he didn’t. It hurts, but he didn’t. He will do better. If he had Frisk in front of him again, he’d probably ruffle their hair or pat their head—make one of his rare jokes again, before genuinely apologizing for failing them.

And Frisk would probably smile and give him a tight hug, forgiveness before they have to go for good this time. Maybe they’d say hello to Beta, and approve of Delta’s work of trying to protect AUs and take care of Beta—but they’d remind him to not join them and the rest of the Underground. Papyrus misses him, too, but he’d better not see Sans too soon.

(Of course, the prompt is can Sans accept that he can never save Frisk no matter how badly he wants to; not can Sans realize that he never could’ve realistically protected Frisk in the first place. He’s gonna need a therapist to unpack that one.)

As for Epic and Color, these are the two he refuses to accept that he can’t save—even if only from themselves. In his eyes, they’re good, strong people—they’ve been through far too much to pass on from life with anything but a big smile and no regrets, happy.

(Of course, though. Does he realize how happy Epic would be to simply die?)

So I think he already experiences having Color and Epic in front of him everyday, trying to support them and help them and refusing to accept the possibility that he can’t.
