Othertale Thoughts
I've been seeing a lot of posts about Othertale recently and I am so fucking hyped over it, cause I've loved that project for several years and felt like I was the only one who gave a damn about it until now.
I need to refresh my knowledge on Othertale again but from what I remember about the story that I seldom see many talk about are how the disappearances of Sans, the six human souls, and Chara's body, would affect the timeline.
And to be fair we already know there was some effect, we know Undyne took the "role" of Sans as Papyrus's older sibling, and she didn't end up joining the Royal Guard, becoming a pianist instead and writing her own music. Instead, it's Gerson that remained the Head of the Royal Guard.
So while we know what bandaid solutions the game utilized to patch the absence of Sans, what about Chara? What about the six human souls? How would their absences affect the timeline?
Technically Chara isn't actually gone from the timeline, not completely. It's just her (Chara is referred to with she/her in Othertale) body that's been met with oblivion thanks to Color's fuckery. Her mind and her "soul" in a sense is still present, and from what I recall of Othertale's animations, she possesses monsters in a vulerable state, whether they be dealing with isolation or social drama, they are in an unstable state of mind, and she uses them as hosts to target other monsters. Chara is supposed to be an antagonistic, sadistic force here, just like how the fanon perception of this character is.
But since Chara doesn't have a body and has more in common with... perhaps a poltergeist as far as characters like Undyne can speculate, what does her physical absence mean for the backstory of the Underground? What does this mean for characters who were previously supposed to be her family? What about Flowey?
Did the first fallen human just never show up? Would this mean Asriel is still alive and Toriel never left Asgore? Did Chara still find a way to interfere with that somehow? What would this mean for the state of morale in the Underground as is, minus the fear and apprehension spawned from Chara's current activity?
What about the Amalgamates, since Othertale doesn't have the six human souls either? Would their incident just never have occurred? I think so. But in the absence of any storage of human DETERMINATION, what's Alphys's role as the Royal Scientist supposed to bring now? What's she working on?
I HAVE SO MANY FUCKING QUESTIONS, I AM BEGGING. I AM ON MY FUCKING KNEES. -- Sarco

Hellooo! Can you tell more about Color Sans? I always see stuff about him, but I know nothing??? Like, I know that he has some connection to Killer, but I never undertand it :(
Gladly! I am actually working on a Google Doc for Color and his AU, Othertale, at the moment. It is not complete, but here is a link to the Doc if you’d like to give it a look. Not everything is on there yet and it’s not very organized I don’t think, but there’s some links, pictures, and the creator’s socials.
If you’d like to look up the creator, you can give superyoumna and othertale-blog here on Tumblr a look, or superyoumna over on YouTube.
Now Color’s connection to Killer is that they’re friends, and Color is trying to help Killer leave Nightmare and potentially fix his soul—as Killer has asked him to.
The exact nature of their meeting is left up to interpretation according to Killer’s creator, rahafwabas, and the exact nature of their relationship—platonic, romantic, queer platonic, etc—is also left to interpretation, although Killer’s creator has stated they see it more like bromantic than romantic.
Both Killer and Color’s creators, who were and still seem to be good friends (killer’s creator even helped design backgrounds for Othertale), also were very supportive of shipping them.
Color, according to Killer, is someone who gives him hope. He brings light to Killer’s grey, lifeless world; and Killer feels safe with him. Color makes him feel seen, heard, respected. And Color just really wants to do right by Killer, and help him to the best of his abilities.
Now, on to Color’s AU—Othertale. It’s probably more accurate to say that Othertale was an alternate timeline that, due to a choice, became an AU.
After going through his own sets of Genocides and Resets, Sans made a hasty choice in a moment of desperation—absorb the six human souls. This gave him new, very strong abilities—as you can see in the links in the Google Doc—yet his body is very fragile. Overusing his abilities can and will kill him.
So Sans manages to finally permanently kill the human, but this causes a Reset. Sans is sent to the Void with Gaster where he is forgotten by everyone, Frisk and Chara are erased and forgotten as well. So the world attempts to adapt to the absence of the six human souls and its major players.
This results in Othertale, in which Undyne is actually the main character. In this AU, Undyne encounters a young Papyrus in the garbage dump—dealing with bullying, appearing to be alone and homeless without anyone to take care of him, and only coming to Undyne for help from bullies since they met after “the explosion”—and proceeds to take him under her wings as her baby brother. She finds a passion for playing the piano, and often uses her abilities to entertain the Underground.
Because she was too concerned with raising Papyrus, she never attempts to join the Royal Guard; and so Gerson remains its Captain. As a further result, Papyrus has no interest in fighting or joining the Royal Guard either; instead becoming a math teacher.
The promise to Toriel never happens because Sans was not there to give it, although Color remembers it.
The amalgamates do not exist in Othertale, and so Alphys is a lot more sure of herself and confident. There is no way to break the barrier, although admittedly monsters in Othertale seem a lot more content in the Underground, although they still maintain hope. Mettaton was given his body a lot earlier, and seems more like a weapon than an Underground star.
However, trouble arises when an error suddenly reveals itself—going by the name of corrupted chara, although it seems pretty obvious that it is the Player, here to keep playing by taking other vessels now that Frisk is gone. In an attempt to stop this, Color and Gaster elect Undyne’s help—despite how she has no idea what’s happening.
And that’s the general premise of the AU. I am unsure if it is discontinued or if there’s still plans to continue, but it’s just delayed.
As for Color’s character on its own, we unfortunately don’t get much on him canonically due to him not being the main character and the AU not being finished.
He still has a lot of characteristics that Classic Sans does, however the traits and influence/compulsions of the six human souls he absorbed—kindness, patience, perseverance, justice, bravery, integrity—have an immense effect on him and his life, even to the point potentially being dangerous for him.
He is said to not make jokes as much as anymore, although he still does, and he often is quicker to emotional outbursts or anger. He has an intense fear of being alone or forgotten again, to the point he’d get involved in things that are harmful for himself or stick around groups to avoid being lonely—although his creator said he’s often likely to take on a “voice of reason” role in any group he’s in.
If you look of the effects of prolonged solitary confinement and isolation, it is understandable why he has a harder time controlling his emotions and doesn’t wish to feel that sense of being alone again.
A common interpretation in parts of the fandom is that, not only due to his isolation, but due to a hc that he is Autistic, he is often prone to overwhelm and overstimulation—often needing his alone time anyway, even if he’s likely to deny himself what he needs.
A common HC is that he is a nomad, full of wanderlust, not wanting to feel trapped or stuck in the same place again—having developed perhaps some special interests in traveling and keeping track of the lores of AUs he encounters.
It is due to his nature and being Autistic, but also the fact of wanting to stay near Killer wherever he happens to currently be, that it’s headcanoned that Color takes seasonal or part time jobs.
Enough to stay afloat without having to be tied down to one spot or burn himself out trying to keep up with 9 to 5 jobs.
It is also headcanoned that, due to his fear of being forgotten, that Color develops a special interest in photography. Keeping a camera with him, filling up scrapbooks and walls, and journaling.
Maybe he even takes up baking and gardening sometimes. Color’s creator is also Egyptian I believe, so both he and Killer could likely speak Arabic, and it’s possible to implement parts of the culture and beliefs into his character. And also elements of his physical disability, given one of his eyes are gone and his skull is busted open.
Color is also said to be friends with Delta!Sans and Epic!Sans, forming a group known as the Epic Sanses, and I HC’d that when Color first accepted Core!Frisk’s offer to live in the Omega Timeline, that he and Delta were roommates.
Color also hates Nightmare. For how he treats AUs, innocent people, Color’s friends, and especially how he hurts Killer “the most.” Due to the fact that Nightmare canonically replaces Killer with other versions of himself, it is often accepted by Color!Sans lovers that Color’s PTSD worsens, he develops separation anxiety, survivor’s guilt, and compassion fatigue due to the many times he has tried and failed to save and protect all the Killers that Nightmare replaces.
Color struggles to give up on Killer, he can’t do it, and it very likely comes close to killing him more and more every time. Leaving Color to have to rely on the support of his friends Epic and Delta. Color’s opinion of Nightmare is formed by the absolute cruelty Color has consistently witnessed first hand from him, but also the cruelty he’s been on the receiving end of.
Color is often seen as that burnt out therapist friend, the one who everyone wants to go to in order to talk about their problems and ask for advice, and Color struggles to set boundaries in these areas—not only because he doesn’t want to run the risk of pushing people away and being alone again, but because kindness and justice often struggle to let him to.
Essentially, Color has been completely forgotten by the world he only ever tried to protect. For his attempts to save and protect the people he cares about more than anything, the world seems to just consistently punish him for even trying.
He’s forgotten, he’s alone, he’s pushed aside, he fails. He’s forced to watch everyone go on without him, and when Killer becomes his world, he’s forced to watch as he’s constantly destroyed over and over and despite everything Color somehow still survives.
Yet he refuses to give up. Doing so would go against everything he believes in, everything he is.

Othertale: a summary
"The Thought" is not the only AT in which Sans took the six human SOULS that were in his majesty's custody. But in another AT, "Othertale," it did not grant him ascension nor freedom.
This could perhaps be attributed to the fact that he absorbed them after he'd already sustained a fatal injury toward the end of a [no mercy] loop, and that time stopped for him as it did for Geno before the SOULS could heal the laceration across his ribcage or the craters in his skull, out of which the multicolored SOUL power burns. Whatever the case may be, though this loop did not last, what happened in it would continue to alter their timeline.
Though he was not [REDACTED] in the... the same sense as me, Sans and the SOULS in his possession were forgotten by the timeline. Without the SOULS or the Determination extracted from them, the fallen were never desecrated or awoken, I'd finished Mettaton's construction sooner and, somehow, Undyne was positioned as Papyrus' sibling in Sans' place, leaving Gerson as captain of the royal guard.
As has been stated before, there is code transcribing reality itself. And there are forces with access to this code. They may be the same forces which Errors such as... such as Geno are in direct contact with. They seem to take as much credit, at least. Based on feedback from an informant widely nicknamed "Blueberror," it seems that the vast majority of them do not interfere with the code itself. Rather, for most of them, their access is limited to influence over Frisk.
In the aforementioned loop that led to Sans' banishment, he'd... made contact with the one of these forces. But similarly, he'd managed to erase his timeline's Frisk. Unfortunately, the force this timeline was dealing with was one such entity who could break into the code and hack it, finding ways to use other people as their proxies. Such as the nacarat jester. In response to this threat, on the day of her piano recital, Undyne was lured into the Void by one of the aforementioned sentry stations. Sans and Dr. W.D. Gaster could not leave, but by bringing her in, Sans could share his powers with her, completing her succession of his role in the timeline to finish the counterstrike he started.

I finished it. So please, let me explain what this is.
First, it’s Undertale September, but I decided to just do everything at once. Second, I liked the idea of every character being from a different AU. This was pretty much randomly assigned, so I had to design a few of the characters that didn’t previously exist in the story. Third, I liked @tatatale‘s Palette Challenge so I did every character in a different palette.
And so, I ended up with this
Gasttale Frisk by (unknown), palette 11 Stroyshift Asriel by voltrathelively, palette 12 Spirittale Flowey by my friend (Belle), palette 12 Chesstale Chara by (unknown), design by me, palette 3 Xtale Toriel by Jakei, palette 4 Underswap Napstablook by Popcorn Pr1nce, palette 15 Underlust Sans by NSFWShamecave, palette 6 Birdtale Papyrus by Greyscales(I think?), palette 7 Undertale Annoying Dog by Toby Fox, palette 18 Magusverse Grimm(Grillby) by xfr3eax, palette 19 Burstale Shopkeeper by Aymar, design by me, palette 10 Othertale Undyne by Superyoumna, palette 1 Overtale Gerson by (unknown), design by me, palette 2 Horrortale Mad Mew Mew by SourAppleStudios, design found online, palette 13 Underpray Shyren by (unknown), design by me, palette 4 Dancetale Monster Kid by Teandstars, design by me, palette 15 FNaFtale Temmie by JadaE (me), palette 16 GZtale Alphys by Golzy Blade Dee, palette 17 Quantumtale Burgerpants by perfectshadow06, palette 8 Underdecay Mettaton by Little-Noko, palette 9 Deltarune Bratty by Toby Fox , palette 1 Reapertale Catty by Renrink, design by me, palette 20 Epictale Muffet by Yugogeer, palette 2 Neurosistale Asgore by JadaE (me), palette 3 Deathflower  Gaster  River Person by JadaE (me), palette 5 Clickertale Onion-san by Vitjok, design by me, palette 20

So was rewatching Othertale: Before the Hack (part 1) a few days ago and posting about it, which you can find here, and i was taking notes as i did.
You can also find the link to my analysis of the [caring] animation here, and my analysis of the [experiment] animation here and here.
And happy 9th birthday to both Othertale, and Color Sans!
“Undyne, or Ivory, comes from an AU called Othertale. She can play piano and has a nice sense of music, but can’t sing. She’s much weaker than her Undertale counterpart.
In this AU, Sans never existed (aside from a mysterious sock in the house that Undyne and Papyrus eventually move in to.)
And instead, Undyne—an orphaned street kid blind in one eye with her red hair in a braid—starts looking after an even younger orphaned kid named Papyrus from bullies and thieves. Before eventually, the two decide to stick together as siblings.
Due to being more focused on looking after and raising Papyrus, Undyne does not have any goals to join the Royal Guard or free the Underground or capture any humans.
She cares more about her little brother than anything, and even uses piano skills to eventually become something of a celebrity for the Underground while Papyrus goes on to become a math teacher.
Othertale Undyne grows up in a universe where Sans doesn’t exist, Papyrus is her younger adoptive brother, and she had to work to keep herself and her brother alive.
Using her skills in piano playing to perform concerts, she earns enough to get herself and her brother off the streets.
She seems to take this very seriously, such as being nervous and not sleeping, staying up all night practicing. Especially since she’s become so well know that even King Asgore and Gerson Head of the Royal Guard would be there.
Neither she nor Papyrus have plans to join the Royal Guard, so Gerson is still the captain of the Royal Guard.
Neither Papyrus nor Undyne have any official training, although Undyne and the Royal Scientist Alphys are still love interests—with Alpyhs being Papyrus’ Undernet friend, and appearing to have a celebrity crush on Undyne—even giving her a gift for her big concert.
Because the six human souls also don’t exist in Othertale, breaking the barrier isn’t possible. Mettaton operates more like a living weapon than a star, and the amalgamates don’t exist either. Although Flowey still does.
In the present day of Othertale, many monsters have mysteriously been going missing; with the King himself having to speak on the issue.
It is unclear if Undyne is any concerned about this, given how she readily goes on walks alone with Alphys and was eager to explore an abandoned sentry station that showed up out of nowhere when she heard someone calling her name from it.
One day, however, Undyne is lured into the Void through a sentry station; she hears someone calling her name but no one else can hear it. She decides to immediately go exploring because she wants to have fun. She is rather pushy when Alphys is too scared to go in and explore, but ultimately doesn’t force the other woman to go in.
But inside she is confronted by Gaster and Sans/Color!Sans. She doesn’t understand what’s going on, but is knocked out by a magic fueled punch by Color that transfers some of Color’s “soul power” into her, which opened Undyne’s “blind eye.”
Ivory is not afraid to defend herself; not hesitant at all to summon one of her spears and point it at Gaster when he advances on her, warning him to stay back or else she will hurt him. Although she only does this when he attempts to make a move towards her.
She seems very very nervous about her concert, and she doesn’t seem to have been ready for the level of attention and popularity her skills brought her.
Due to her magic eye that Color unlocked, she seems able to immediately tell if there’s danger nearby; like a warning, perhaps from Color himself. She seems to trust her instincts a lot, immediately ditching her big concert and audience to follow her gut and run straight into danger.
When she finds Alphys injured, she’s furious and fiercely protective; demanding to know who did it in a low growling tone.
Once making sure Alphys is okay, her immediate concern after is her brother and his safety. But rather than immediately running off and abandoning Alphys, she expresses this to her—and after getting reassurance that the other woman is okay and understands, she gives Alphys a tight hug before running off after Papyrus.
As soon as she finds and protects Papyrus, she orders her brother to run and get help while she fights off against the other monster attacking him on her own.
She’s able to shortcut a lot like Sans is able to now. Her eye glows like Sans’ did, only yellow this time. Her fish ears/gills pin back when she’s scared.
When she gains her second form, her hair is chopped off to what appears to be about ear length. Her spears are stronger and longer, and she has her own Gaster Blasters.
She dresses like an Underfell Undyne in this form—and she wears a heart shaped golden necklace with the letter “f” on it.
We don’t know where she got it, what it means, who it came from—but it was said to be a gift from someone.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ the images I am referring to. (All art by superyoumna.)
This part is in reference to the [experiment] short, and the brother & sister comic.
Before Gaster jumped into the Core and Sans was forgotten in the Void to create Othertale, back when the universe was still Undertale—this universe seems to subscribe to the idea that both Sans and Undyne’s magical eyes were due to experiments by Dr. Gaster.
Sans says that Dr. Gaster made a mistake when giving him his eye, that it made Sans’ body extremely unstable and fragile—and possibly more, although Sans doesn’t seem to hold it against Gaster even when Gaster holds it against himself.
Sans reassures Undyne that Gaster won’t make that same mistake with her, but when the experiment finally works and Undyne is able to see from her fake eye, Gaster immediately tells Sans to remove the soul energy or it would damage Undyne’s body.
Undyne during this flashback seems to be around 5, while Papyrus is at most 1-2, and Sans seems to be in his late teens to early 20s. When Sans is pulled into the Void and the world is rewritten to forget Sans and make Othertale, Ivory’s eye is blind again and later needs to be reactivated by Color transferring his soul energy back to her.
All a part of Color and Shade’s plan to empower Ivory with knowledge and power so she can fight against the impending threat, since Color and Shade cannot leave the Void without the risk of dying.
Despite how Ivory and Shade’s meeting in Othertale’s Void is confronting and wary, in the past, child Undyne seemed to find comfort in Gaster and trusted him a lot—such as wanting him to share in her happiness, being worried about him when he leaves in frustration, and saying that the lab is spooky without him around.
As a child after Sans is forgotten, however, it appears little Ivory met little Sage sometime after an event just referred to as “the explosion.” And ever since then, Sage only ever sought Ivory out whenever the other children would steal from and bully him—and Ivory would beat up the bullies for him and get his stuff back.
One day, while searching for a rubix cube in the garbage dumps, a frantic and crying Sage runs up to Ivory to tell her that the others kids stole his toy car.
Ivory notes that he only ever comes to her when he needs protection. Sage immediately apologizes for this, but Ivory quickly corrects herself as that wasn’t what she meant—this is the moment where Ivory proposes that Sage stick with her instead of surviving on his own.
Sage is reluctant to accept because even though they are friends, they are still strangers. In answer to this, Ivory gives Sage her rubix cube and loudly states that they are neither friends nor strangers—instead they are siblings.
Sage immediately gets excited by this idea, and the two proudly and loudly declare that they are siblings—and Sage promises to always look up to her and support her as his big sister and as the “great Papyrus!”

Color, Ivory, and Sage should do the Sibling Dance
I was thinking theyd all probably be siblings in a human au, or color and sage got separated in the foster care system and color spends his time trying to find and reunite with him but sage was a baby when they were taken from their parent(s) and doesn’t remember color but does know ivory as his foster/adoptive sister.
and like maybe ivory was a dirty orphan taken in by old man gerson in a human au and maybe the two just took in baby sage and he grew up with them.
or possibly, sage and ivory were both taken into the foster home of some abusive people so ivory took baby sage and ran away (making them homeless just like in Othertale canon when they were kids), and after awhile gerson found and took them in.
which is why no one knows anything about color nor sage’s biological family.
and perhaps color grew out of the foster care system without ever being adopted. and either othertale Gaster/Shade takes Color in as an employee/apprentice because then color at least has a job, access to money and a place to live while he goes through school, looks for his brother, any treatments he may or may not need because of any incident that resulted in the equivalent of his skull busting open/losing an eye/flames, and helps his online friend killer.
plus whatever equivalent his six human souls will take in a human au, as well as his fragile body.
