Saturday, 10 A.M - November 27th, 1982 - Edenseye church, Hestia County, Iowa

Eliza sat in the empty nave, looking down, observing her hands tightly clasped together in her lap.

The sound of rain hitting the stained-glass windows accompanied her breath, as the downpour seemed to mourn with her, the rain drops falling harder than her tears had in the last week.

Her heart felt heavy, pressed down by too many sorrows to name or count. Each disappointment, each loss, had accumulated before they could be dealt with, and now she felt like there was a constant heavy weight tying her down. Between her father's death, her sister's abandonment of the faith, her husband's silence and infidelity, and her three children moving out and cutting off all contact with her and the rest of the family, it had just been way too much to handle.

Eliza kept praying despite so many hardships, but recently she had started to become afraid. Fearing that she was doing something wrong, that this was God's trial for her, one that would not stop until she finally realized her mistake and sought out to repent herself. But it was easier said than done, for Eliza simply couldn't figure out what it had been that upset Heaven so much, no matter how many hours she spent self-reflecting.

So now she was seeking out help from the priest of the neighboring village, an almost completely Lutheran one, Father Caleb. He was a good and kind man, and surely a messenger of God would be able to help her.

She raised her head to stare at the large crucifix statue above the altar, the only statue inside the church, its figure bathed in the amber light from the many flickering candles. Perharps, in that moment, she was trying to find peace, or maybe, trying to reassure herself that her suffering wouldn't have been in vain after God forgave her.

Finally, Father Caleb emerged from the door to the left, which lead into the interior of the church, not commonly accessed by the congregation. He spoke, his serene voice echoing throughout the nave despite his low tone.

"Everything is ready. Please follow me, ma'am."

Don’t think it find with the current timeline BUT have been playing around with the idea Dragon and Crocodile fell apart over gender identity revelations and sexuality but in the other direction and more morally gray

The revolutionaries are all about freedom and dignity and justice and other related ideas right? And ivankov both seems capable of discerning someone’s gender or inner struggle perhaps before they even have words for it (as seems to be the case) as well as seeming to serve as a sort of guide or mentor to other queers who rither serve under him or seek him out. Pope for the gays.

So some point into dating fair lady crocodile Ivankov taps his friend Dragon on the shoulder and let’s him know that he’s been getting clear man signals from crocodile for a while and dragon should make his peace. But neither tells crocodile because they both decide thst the most respectful thing to do is let him figure it out himself eventually

Sentimentality vs pragmatism

So normally when I get asks I really want to come up with something to say in response to post it (to the point sometimes I will derail an ask just so I can think of something to say). And if I can't think of anything to say in response, I just leave the ask in my inbox.

But this one.

Like I feel like this probably wouldn't work in canon, at least not in my mind (though that admittedly could be just me being delulu in how convinced I am of my own headcanons being accurate lmao), and that's the thing I'm usually obsessed with, the canon compliancy, could that work with the canon characterization and would the actions make sense, etc etc.

But this is such an interesting concept on its own, that like. I dunno I don't want to leave this collecting dust in my inbox, it's too interesting. It could make for an interesting character study/an AU

I'm up to the "I dunno maybe children working 13 hour shifts is bad, guys" part of Capital and it feels important to inform people that haven't read it yet that capitalists in the 19th century were not by any means wringing their hands and twirling their mustaches about employing children to squeeze out profits, they were hiring "experts" to write newspaper articles for them, explaining how "well, the socialists have these big demands about an 8-hour work day, and taking Saturdays off, but it's actually just so complicated, it's too complicated for most people to understand, we just NEED to hire children for night shifts because the stamina of their strong, youthful bodies is the only way we can survive as a business! It's science, you see. Economics doesn't work like that, just ask our economics professors at Oxford. You CAN'T turn a profit only working people 8 hours! Trust the experts, they know. It's just so complicated..."

That exact infuriating cadence that you read in New York Times articles, in the Atlantic Monthly, in the WaPo and all the other bourgeois rags where "everything is so complicated, and it's actually a lot more complicated than you think.." that has been around since the beginning. It is nothing new. So the next time you see some op-ed from Matt Yglesias or any of those other guys huffing their own farts about how "complicated" everything is, and how "unrealistic" a 30-hour work week is, remember that Marx was dealing with that exact class of "intellectuals" "explaining" how working 13 hours at age 10 was "vital" to the "moral fibre" of those poor kids.
