have you been enjoying absurd Helldivers 2 nonsense?
Tumblr media
multiple players have independently called my compared my satirical scifi skirmish storytelling TTPRG 🎲 PLANET FIST to Helldivers—so much as to call it "exactly the tone of Helldivers." the new Faithless Edition of PLANET FIST will be releasing this year, and if you buy it now, you get the new edition for free!
Tumblr media
in PLANET FIST, SHOOTOUTS ARE STORIES, and they're goofy and over the top. you're an undying, unsleeping soldier who can get blasted to bits and thrown right back onto the battlefield next round. if you're looking to see how it hits that Helldivers tone, just check out some of the FACTION TRAITS below!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what's PLANET FIST about? what does it play like? read the PRINCIPLES OF PLAY here!
Tumblr media
what are people saying about PLANET FIST, besides that it's like Helldivers 2?
"PLANET FIST is a quick-to-learn and quick-to-play system for characters thrown into FPS-style deathmatches on a world that knows nothing but war. It's a game of high-emotion, low-consequence combat, for when you're wondering what the infinite Master Chiefs are thinking during Halo multiplayer. PLANET FIST is 'war never changes' said with the same inflection as 'it's all made up and the points don't matter.'"
- Caleb Zane Huett, designer of Triangle Agency
"An absolute blast—and then another, and then another, and then another, each leaving remains splattered on a wall. Gleeful, and tactical, and winkingly tongue-in-cheek; a masterful game from top to bottom."
- Jeff Stormer, host of the Party of One actual play podcast

The problem with these new brain-flight computer interfaces that NASA and the US Navy are trialing is that I'm not entirely convinced the interfaces themselves are just 'complementary intelligence' to a pilot. Sure, they plot high-G maneuvers and give a fighter pilot almost supernatural awareness of their own craft, but I think those eggheads in the server rooms are making it a little too difficult to view the plane as the tool it used to be.
I got a buddy who works as a radar operator on a Navy carrier. I won't say which one. She said she saw a routine training drill a few weeks ago where high winds picked up as the squadron were coming in to land. One guy pancaked down and buckled the front gear. Damaged the bottom of his plane's fuselage. Usually no biggie, right? You get a reprimand, endure some shit from other pilots, they fix the plane, all hunky-dory, right? Nah. Not with this interface shit. They had to haul the poor fucker out, white as a sheet. He didn't talk for two days and spent most of that crying and murmuring in the hospital wing. She said it looks like a case of PTSD. Guy only calmed down when they confirmed over and over to him that the plane was being repaired, and he'd be back to flight status in a few days.
There's this other guy. Total sweetheart. He took my friend out for a little date before they shipped out, you know. She says he was the perfect gent - a little easily flustered, maybe a bit shy, but engaged enough with her, and he insisted on paying for the meal. Then he got posted up with his plane, and he changed. Trust me, reader, I wouldn't believe it myself if I didn't trust my sources absolutely. Apparently this flyboy starts getting distant with his squad. Every drill, sortie, recon mission, he's exemplary. His simulated flight records and combat kills are head-and-shoulders above anyone else in the carrier. He might be the reincarnation of the Red fuckin' Baron, walking the decks. But there's nothing behind his eyes anymore. Guy has a hair-trigger temper, she says, and it's almost eerie how fast his mood can switch up.
Common sense says the pilot flies the plane - but I don't know how true that is anymore. I think the planes are starting to fly their pilots.
All I'm saying is, not too long from now, we're gonna boil over into war. I bet my life savings there'll be some classified video leaked onto the web that has these interfaced planes being shot down in a skirmish. You'll get grainy cam footage, maybe an audio recording.
My fear is, one of those interfaced planes is gonna get shot down, and we won't be able to tell what's screaming by the time it hits the ground.

“The fuck is this?”
Warm shafts of light poked through the rusted, shattered windows of the warehouse. The for-sale signs smothered on every tarp glinted in the glow of aged and mostly functioning fluorescent lamps. In the center of the room, catching the warped rectangular sheen of a few windows, was a mound. Oddly shaped, with all kinds of angular and vaguely mechanical points jutting out of the thick canvas tarp, it was without a shadow of a doubt the centerpiece of the exhibit.
“Oh, that?” The curator tried to stifle his grin, fumbling in his pocket for the remote as an old, worn-out crane squealed. The winch stuttered for a few moments before dragging up the cloak, revealing the titanic, hunched figure beneath.
It was a battle frame, bigger than the ones they had on the Air Force base. Everything about this one looked off. Its body just bit too bulky and angular, its head dashed in an antenna and shielding around its burnt out mono-eye. From foot to helmet it was adorned in bright white paint, only broken up by a black panel on the right shoulder.
“Jesus… you’re allowed to sell these?”
“It’s not a fighting vehicle, moron, it’s an antique.”
“Antique my fuckin ass man, it’s got a missile rack.”
“Hey!” The owner glared at the guest, his eyes narrowing as he almost protectively leaned his arm over the things knee. Its leg alone was nearly twice the width of his torso, and even hunched over it poked its head through the wooden girders and threatened to break through the sheet metal roof. “This thing’s from the lunar war, ya hear? Type 91 Sternjager, limited production and even more limited survival rate.”
“Lunar war? Fuck, that’s gotta be worth like a couple million.”
“Millions? Jesus Christ, will you have a little respect? This motherfucker saved our country and you’re worried about-”
“The hell kind of name is Sternjager? Why’d we be using a German MAX?”
The curator’s eyes twinkled a little at the question, grinning as he looked up at the veteran’s enormous arm. Crossed over its chest and resting against the monumental rifle between the goliaths legs, its arm still bore the faded logo of the ICAR. A white Pegasus over a black shield, ‘Victory Over Honor’ emblazoned below.
“Well that’s the beauty, we didn’t. 5 noble, good men decided they’d defect and help save America.” He nodded slowly, eyes shut as he thought back. He’d never been to space, but he could picture it in his head. Clear as day, he could see them. See their wizened faces, the resolve in their eyes as they carried that bomb through the abyss and into the heart of the rebel stronghold. God, he wished he was there. Able to watch as the nuke pierced the heart of the moon. Sure, they lost the war, but what’s there to win when you’ve decimated so much.

Space - Above and Beyond
Is available on youtube in its entirety. And its one of the best SciFi Shows ever made.
There are so many intriguing details in it. But what gets me just now, is the Invitros.
For your Information: Its set in 2064 in a war against an advanced alien race. Its military scifi about a squadron of space marines.
Besides the humans and the aliens (They call them Chiggs) there are also the Silicates(androids that rebelled) and the Invitros.
Invitros are humans that were made in a tank. After the Silicates rebelled, humans needed more fighters, fast. So Invitros were artifically made and quickly grown in a tank. They are born as fully formed adults. They get some time in a school and then have to be adults pulling their weight. Initially used for the war against the Silicates they then were forced to work in the mines. The slur for them is also "tanks". When the show starts that indentured servitude was already outlawed.
Space above and beyond has two main characters who are Invitros.
Cooper Hawkes, a seven year old who was sentenced into military service.
T. C. McQueen, a twentysomething, so he looks like early 50s. He becomes their commanding officer.
These are people who came into the world without parents, educated only about things needed for the jobs they should perform.
But they are humans. They love. Especially Coop at the start has zero emotional maturity. And he only knew abuse when he joined them. He didnt want to be there.
Their journey in this war full of pain, hardship and loss compells me the most. They have zero reason to endanger their lifes for humanity. Except being humans. And they care. So much. They dont understand their friends. They never had parents, not good parents, not bad parents. They never were kids. They dont understand love and they know they dont understand love, but they love so much.
I love them. They never did anything wrong in their life, your honor.
There is a HD remaster on youtube. Please watch this fantastic show. It had banger CGI for 1996. But most of all, they dont write characters like that anymore.

Art by geistverrse on Tumblr, Twitter/X, and Bluesky
“It’s not killing the other guys that fucks you up. That’s the fun part, that’s what we signed up to do. It’s seeing your own guys die; it’s watching your friend die while your hands are in his chest trying to fix him as he wheezes and gurgles his last breaths while clutching your arm. That’s what fucks you up.”
War always comes at a cost. It doesn’t matter who you are. War affects everyone. Defending your home against an invader means you’re going to lose friends.
Depicted in the image is a young Sergeant in the Shaconage Republic Army Rangers looking at the makeshift headstones made from pieces of scrap metal from destroyed enemy vehicles and logs after a 3 day firefight between a Ranger platoon and a battalion of enemy forces. The Rangers won the fight, routing the enemy after inflicting devastating losses, but were themselves reduced down to 12 men.

Does anyone know of any military sci-fi where the heroes are guerillas/insurgents? I don't think I've ever seen that before.
Even when the heroes are portrayed as rebels or underdogs, they usually fight using standard tactics, so I'd be interested in reading something different.
