I LOVED To Be a Creature, and it genuinely creeped me out to see the things Edelgard and Hubert said to Byleth (though it's the same as the game, stripped out of its voice acting and background music, the dialogue is so much more horrifying). Really makes me wonder if Edelgard's love for Byleth is genuine in any way. Do you think there's any real love there or is it just obsession?
Thank you!!! I had a feeling that placing Edelgard and Hubert's words in a context that isn't meant to make them look flattering would really let their casual racism shine, and I'm glad it's seeming like that is in fact the impression people are getting lol. SO sorry for the late answer btw ššš
As for whether Edelgard's love is genuine... I got opinions lmao.
got a bit long lmao under the cut it goes
If Edelgard felt the way she does for Byleth on exclusively SS and CF, I could maybe see how this is a "genuine" love (insofar as a love steeped in "I may hate your race but you're special and Not Like The Other Ones because I think you're special to me" can, uh, ever be genuine, in any case). But because Edelgard still feels as strongly towards Byleth on AM and VW where she quite literally never talks to them directly in any meaningful way, it becomes waaaaay more like she's just weirdly obsessed with this person who saved her one singular time ever five years ago from an attack Edelgard set up. It makes the "love" way more forced and contrived and obviously trying to squeeze tears out of the player for standing up against the cute girly trying to murder them. Or, alternatively, it makes Edelgard come off as manipulative, saying that she just wanted to walk with Byleth and it makes her so sad to HAVE to fight Byleth because BYLETH wouldn't stand by HER - and she's saying this on AM/VW to a person she's talked to in conversation a cumulative, what? Hour? Two? Maybe a few days, being nice? Over the course of, being as absolutely generous as physically possible and not counting the five years Byleth was missing... two fucking years? She's shitting herself over fighting this stranger she doesn't fucking know? Yeah, sure buddy, whatever you say - you see what I mean?
And honestly even outside of those two routes, I think it's more that she sees Byleth as being hers rather than actually liking them for who they are. A body to stand next to her and tell her how right she is and comfort her - who doesn't have the background of "I was literally raised to think this is my only purpose in life" muddying the sincerity of the brown-nosing - who also happens to also act as The Perfect Fighter and The Perfect Strategist to actively help her get what she wants. That view of Byleth being a tool doesn't really go away unless they marry her, seen by how they quite literally get nothing for all they've done for Edelgard should they go unmarried to a noble (guess they just weren't meritable enough once their use to her was done).
As well as how much more Edelgard doesn't like Byleth disagreeing with her or otherwise going against her flow than pretty much anyone else in the game - you lose supports points if you don't think the Black Eagle Strike Force name she made is good, she quickly denies the notion that Byleth isn't detached from others/emotions and insists they are just like she is, she gives them the same callous and thoughtless words she was apparently given once in her life while they are in the midst of mourning their recently murdered father so that they get over it already and get back to being useful to her (directly saying she will only reach out her hand when it's time for HER to move forward, not when BYLETH heals from WATCHING THEIR DAD DIE IN THEIR FUCKING ARMS MAYBE A WEEK AGO). She never treats Byleth kindly unless they do everything she wants, which like. Isn't love???? At all????
There's just this... weirdly possessive air Edelgard has around Byleth that always threw me off, especially with how easily she admits to have been willing to kill them so far into CF and how readily she cuts ties with them the second the fighting's done (which is particular because how just how clingy she was to Byleth everywhere else - you know during all that time Byleth had a use to her). Incorporating that into being an intentional part of her character is certainly interesting, but not in a way that's flattering to the idea of Edelgard genuinely being in love with Byleth lmao.
Personally tho, even disregarding almost everything else, the simple explanation is that I don't think you can really sit there and say you love someone while openly hating part of their racial heritage. Wild thought, I know lmao
#ask#anon#anti edelgard#just to be safe#like. maybe if this ship was allowed to be seen as the clearly toxic ship it is i MIGHT could see it as a sort of twisted#''you're only good because *I* like you'' fucked up kinda deal#where the possessive and controlling shit baked into the relationship was embraced or even just like. acknowledged?? at all??#and where Edelgard ''doesn't care'' for Byleth's mixed-race status in her love for her...#...because she *already* dehumanized them as *being* hers regardless of Byleth's race. like they ALREADY aren't really a person to her#which is why their mixed-race status is just an annoying bug to her and not a deal-breaker (to downplay it SEVERELY but you get the idea)#but uh like it's not like at all lmao#there's no way in hell my ass is gonna be convinced Edelgard ''I hate Nabateans and want to obliterate all of them'' von Hresvelg#would ever actually genuinely love Byleth ''is literally part Nabatean'' Eisner WITHOUT getting over her hatred of Nabateans#and oops guess what she never does š¤·āāļø#and yeah her ''facing you i grow weak'' and ''i just wanted to walk with you'' schtick on AM and VW looks shallow as helllllll dude#like bitch do NOT play with me you do not and frankly CAN not give a shit about this person sincerely#LITERALLY they have almost never spoken to each other. she could've just as well said this to fucking Raphael and have it mean just as much

hhau mimic arc rambles part III bonus: the eclipse
(~2,8 k words) // other parts & au masterpost here
Every couple of years, thereās a total eclipse in this world. The moon is big, obscuring the sun in a horrible totality, entrapping it for what feels like too long. This is a big event, but not because people are eager to spectate the sky and bask in its weirdness. No, it has much worse connotations.
Because the eclipsed moon affects many of the hybrids. Especially the animal ones.
Hunters look forward to the eclipse because it promises a lot of loud, distressed, instinct-driven hybrids scattering about without many defences. They prepare traps specifically for this occasion and organise big hunting parties, eager for the upcoming bloodbath and bounty.
The eclipse happens mid-winter while Scar and Grian are on the server.
And itās awful.
[cws violence, murder (no known characters), panic, mind-altering states and a loss of self control, haywire instincts, non-consensual manhandling, horrory vibes]
They donāt really know what is happening at first. Hermitcraft is a safe server which has many things coded differently, and because eclipses hurt many hybrids, they never happen there. So Scar and Grian have never experienced anything like this, and the yank it has on Grianās state in particular is startingly sharp and terrifyingly confusing.
Scar himself is alright, becauseāand the two of them donāt know this at the timeāvexes are immune to the eclipse.Ā
Actually, thatās not quite accurate. The eclipse helps heighten their magic.
They thrive.
Grian does anything but thrive.
His instincts go absolutely batshit haywire. He starts getting disoriented and incredibly uneasy, anxiety holding him in a choke hold, and all rationality and caution leave him, replaced by pure fear.Ā
He starts making inadvertent chirping sounds, panicked, and no matter what Scar says or does, Grian canāt seem to stop.
Itās so dark outside. And Grianās chirping isnāt the only one that sounds through the forest.
In a world where they thought avians might be all nearly hunted to extinction, there are now suddenly, in this darkness, piercing faraway chirps. Just as panicked and lost-sounding as Grianās own.
But those are not the only sounds the looming forest has to offer.
Thereās also hollering and cheers. Whistles and barks. Twigs snapping under careless boots. Hunter parties following every single hybrid noise right to its source only to slice it shut. Shrill, chilling screams before some hybrid inevitably plunges into absolute, horrifying silence.
Scarās desperately trying to get Grian to shush. He pleads him to stop, to be quiet. Tries to calm him down.
But itās all futile. Grian has no control over himself. He canāt make it stop; itās a wholly new kind of fear, overpowering and unfamiliar, yanking at his instincts. (It feels, a little bit, like a huge moon crashing down while the ground underneath him shakes and disintegrates.) (It feels like locking eyes with someone and not being sure if heāll ever get to see them again.) (It feels like apocalypse. Like the end.) (His mind screams at him and he canāt help but scream along with it.)
Scar wonders if he should put a hand over Grianās mouth. He doesnāt know what to do, but the hunters are out there, in large numbers, tireless and eager, and Grianās voice is now the beacon luring them over, pinging with their exact location.
Grian is slowly backing away, hunched, feathers puffed. His wings are semi-curled around him, no longer tucked under the cloak, even though theyāre out in the open.Ā
He doesnāt seem like heād do well with being touched.
But Scar needs him to be quiet. For Grianās sake too.
Before Scar can do anything, though, Grianās earwings flit wildly and he whips his head to the side, honing in on some noise.
Itās a distressed chirp, one that sounds closer than any of the other ones.Ā
Itās an avian in distress calling for help.
Grian thought there arenāt any avians but him, and now there is one, still alive, so very close, desperate for aid, andā Grianās mind blanks. Thereās only one single thing to do here. He isnāt thinking. His heart beats wildly in overdrive. His body moves.
Blindly, Grian bolts in the direction of the sound.Ā
And itās up to Scar to scramble and run after him.Ā
Itās more than that. More than just following Grian. Because there is so much at stake, and he needs to stop him and quiet him andā And he might have to exert force, andā
Oh. He is basically hunting Grian down here.
He is the hunter following in the steps of a terrified avian.
And Grian, in his dazed and fragmented perception of the world, feels just like prey. There is so much happening for him right now: itās dark and all he can see is Scarās piercing vex eyes when he glances over his shoulder; heās lost in panicky instincts, trying to reach another avian in distress, hurtling blindly towards potential danger; and he does feel hunted.
On top of that, he canāt stop the stream of bird noises. He canāt pull his wings under his cloak either. Heās stumbling and tripping and scaping himself all over, but he feels like he needs to keep running.
He no longer knows if heās even heading the right way. The chirping he was following fell dead silent. His head is just screaming at him. Hot white panic and a cacophony of unstoppable, overpowering instincts.
Scar has to stop him before he gets himself killed.
As awful as it is, Scar doesnāt care about that other potential avian (it could be a trap) nearly as much as he cares about Grian. His priorities here are clear, desperation thick and loud in his lungs, pressing at his ribs. Thereās no time for bargaining or for steeling himself.Ā
He needs to act.
Scar grabs Grian and tackles him to the ground.
Heās pinning him down, sort of straddling him, hands on Grianās mouth, hopelessly trying to muffle the noises. He feels absolutely vile, but he doesnāt know what else to do. His breaths come in little sharp huffs of blue magic, shiny through the darkness as he expels a ton of emotional energy just to keep himself from panicking and crying.
He finds that itās not as easy to hold Grian down when he doesnāt want to be pinned down. But also it is. It is easy, far too easyāharrowingly so. Grianās so light. (It frightens Scar to even touch the thought of how simple this would be for the hunters too.)Ā
Heās terrified of hurting Grian accidentally. Heās very capable of it; Grianās made of brittle hollow bones after all, and Scarās grip is a bit too strong, but he doesnāt have a choice here. Grian wonāt stop thrashing, fighting to be freed. (But Scar knows that letting go would almost surely result in Grianās death.)
And where Grianās attention is kind of selective, not processing things at all, Scarās attention is sharpāsharpened by panicākeenly attuned to their surroundings. He hears all the various noises come and go. Not necessarily chirps; other hybrids, too. Them falling silent. The hunters yelling. And the screams. God. The awful screams.
Theyāre all too far away for now, thankfully, but if Grian wonāt stop, theyāre bound to come this way. After all, if Scar can hear them, surely they can hear Grian tooā?
Scar feels nauseous and horribly helpless. The hunters cheer and laugh as the hybrid noises go dead silent, one by oneā only the hounds left barking and howling in their wake.
Scar knows that, even though itās awful, they canāt help any of those hybrids. But heās going to do everything in his power so that at least the two of them can survive this.
Despite all his (pointless) efforts, the hunters catch up to them anyway.
As they approach, Scar is struggling to quiet Grian down, and Grian isnāt thinking straight enough to properly fight. Itās the worst possible situation.Ā
Thereās no point in quieting Grian down anymore when the hunters are right here though, and so Scar moves on the defensive, ready to give it all to keep Grian alive. The fight is ugly, drenched in frightening desperation; Scar is numb to the pain even when something tears. Grianās chirps get worse. Warmth drips down Scarās face.
But then a different sort of howling breaks through Scarās mounting panic, andā
A group of wild vexes rushes in. Not to save Scar and Grian in particular; itās just a lucky timing.
Because as it turns out, just the way hunters set off to hunt down hybrids during the eclipse, the vexesāwho are more powerful at this time, magic thrumming strongly in their veinsāset off to hunt down the hunters. So nicely accumulated for them. So loud. So easy to find.Ā
The vexes and the humans clash, and in the swell of the chaos, Scar manages to drag Grian away.Ā
He wants to keep going, increase the distance between them and everyone else as much as possible, but all too soon the forest opens up into fields, and no way heās pulling a dazed Grian out there where they canāt hide. So instead he swerves, anchoring them against a rock formationāan array of boulders and a jagged cliff wall.Ā
He presses Grian into a small dent there, covering him with his own body (imprisoning him there, in a way). Hiding Grianās wings, muffling his chirps, whispering frantic things that are meant to be soothing. The sky is still dark, and Grianās still chirping, although itās quieter now; itās clear heās exhausting himself, but heās still making noises. Still unable to stop, despite the terror and the fatigue.
They get found again.
But itās not the human hunters that find them this time. Itās the vex group, sneaking up on them, all their sharp edges drenched in blood, glowing with magic.
Scar turns his back to Grian, still pressing against him, tucking him against the rocks, hiding him as much as possible. Heās ready to lash out. Heās ready to fight with these vexes, even if heās outnumbered. (Heās got no species loyalty here, after all.)Ā
In a curious tone, one of the vexes says: āThat avian is going to get you killed.ā
The words register to Grian through the haze. Heās still absolutely lost amidst this all, barely understanding the world around him, struggling to process anything. But thereās something about the words avian and get you killed, and the thought of Scar, that makes it through the fog.
It only serves to make him more distressed. He breathes in sharp, shallow breaths, and his chirping grows louder again, high pitched. But itās not just the chirps this time. Some of the sounds he makes are choked, merging into something more like himselfāthe sound of helpless sobs.
Scar is shielding Grian with his back, but that means heās turning his back on Grianās cries and all of his misery. He cannot comfort him. He has no words that would make Grian not afraid right now.
The vex suggest leaving Grian orāworseāusing him as a bait.
Scarās staring them down, growling lowly, one eye squinted as blood runs down his face. āHow about you leave.ā
The vex donāt budge. They think theyāre after a good thing here, after all. Surely, Scar also wants these hunters dead?
What theyāre suggesting isnāt to sacrifice Grian as a baitāthey donāt actually want to outright hurt or endanger him, even if it maybe doesnāt translate well through their stance and words. Theyāre not malicious in that way. What theyāre suggesting is simply pragmatic in their minds. (I mean, they wouldnāt grieve if the avian happened to die there, but it wasnāt their goal to let it happen.)Ā
āWeāre hunting the humans,ā they note, as if that shouldāve been enough to sway Scar. āWe could use the avianāā
āNo.ā
One of the vex, white hair braided and smile sharp, peeks past Scar, trying to glimpse the feathers. The violet shade reflected in the glow of their magic tells him everything he needs to know, sating his curiosity, and he whistles, impressed. Amazed that an avian like this has lasted so long.
Scar lunges at him for getting too close.
He gets laughed at in return. Whatās he gonna do, all alone? Not even channelling his magic to heal his own wound. Itās just funny to them. Cute. āWhatāre you going to do?ā they tease, a bit too cheerily for the situation at hand. It rings threatening. āYouāre outnumbered, pal.ā
Scar doesnāt back down. āIād take at least one of you down with me.ā Itās a big statement. Covering up all of his nauseating fear and unending tension. Because heāll do it. Heāll fight if he has to, and it will be ugly, and he might failāhe might dieābut heāll for sure give it everything he has.
And he can tell thereās camaraderie between this group of vexes. That they donāt really want any of them seriously hurt.Ā
They, as vexes, know the best how dangerous a feral, cornered vex with something to protect can be.
Thereās a sliver of respect this earns Scar, unbeknownst to him. The will to stand up to them even when heās outnumbered like this. To not give in to the pressure and instead fight for his values. For what he cares for.
The white haired vexāseemingly a leader of the group of sortsāreiterates, tone a bit lower, that the avian is going to get Scar killed. That heād be better off without him. (Essentially voicing the deep rooted fear Grian already has.)
He also extends an invitation, almost in the same breath, impressed by Scar standing up to them. But itās only Scar who is invited, and itās blatantāthe condition laid down is drop the avian or letās use him as a bait and hunt together.Ā
With sharp ire and a swell of protectiveness, Scar counters that heād be better off without them, actually.
Thereās a snort and a mocking, āAight, letās see how long you can last.ā
The relief Scar feels when they relent and leave is immense, leaving him weak in his knees.
He thinks theyāre foolish, risking themselves like that. In his mind, theyāre the definition of the violent vex, that dark reputation that seems to now stick to Scar and follow him too by the virtue of being the same kind of hybrid. He doesnāt want anything to do with that.Ā
And of course, heād never leave Grian.
Grian is his last connection to home. He loves him, even if it never feels like itās enough.
Excruciatingly slowly, sun eventually peeks back out. But even then, it takes Grian a very long time to untangle himself from these dazed, nonsensical instincts. Itās such a heavy, sticky veil and heās left disoriented and confused for the longest time. Through his exhaustion, he feels weak and dizzy and out of it.
Scar is also exhausted, but theyāre nowhere near safe yet. Still pressed against the rocks. Every nerve ending is flared up, Scarās senses alert to the point of flinching at the subtlest sound, hypervigilant. But as Grian slumps and quiets down, Scarās firm grip on him follows.Ā
Slowly, so slowly, Scarās hold on Grian becomes comforting instead of restricting and terrifying.
He can tell that it left bruises.
Scar hates everything about it, butā Theyāre alive.
The sun is back, Grian is quiet, and theyāre alive.
But they still need to find safety. And Grianās so frazzled, still processing what even happened. The blurred memories of chirps and howls and screams swirl through his mind. He feels lightheaded, and like his skull is stuffed full, unable to think clearly. He doesnāt quite understand any of it, and his body feels locked in place.Ā
Grian wants to stay sitting here until everything starts making sense, but they donāt have that kind of time. They canāt stay. They need to move. They need to properly hide.Ā
Scar feels awful, but he needs to push through. He needs to force Grian to move.
The snow is splattered with blood. The forest is dead silent, scattered bodies left behind all across it. The area is riddled with traps, some activated and others still hidden, waiting to be triggered.Ā
The sun is shining.
The silence is eerie.
The scent of blood is thick and fresh and nothing feels safe.
--
Later, when Grianās more coherent, he says, āThey were right.ā In an incredibly quiet, fragile, unsteady voiceābut laced with determinationāhe tells Scar: āYou shouldāve taken their deal.ā
Scar immediately tries to dismiss it. Preferably to not engage with this conversation at all. āNot interested.ā
Grian registers the shut down of the discussion, but that doesnāt make it any less loud inside of his mind (and heart). He simply goes quiet and withdraws. Lips pursed, lightly frowning, staring somewhere away.
They donāt talk about it again.
Late at night, when Grian canāt sleep because heās too high strung, he thinks of how itād feel like, to be used by those vexes as a bait.
He dreams about it.
He dreams of faraway chirps and laughter and hounds finding him.
He has so many nightmares after this.

#this happened a few nights ago but I didnāt know how to say it but this concept came to me at 4am lmaooooo#anyways so yeah my roommate is studying at her desk and Iām scrolling on my phone in bed in my pjs#when I hear a bit of a commotion near our dorm and my first thought is āoh no theyāre gonna come insideā before telling myself:#a) thatās silly those boys wouldnāt do that and b) our doorās totally locked so itās fine#but turns out I was wrong on both counts :/#cuz the next thing I knew two random dude are *in my room* and they had said smth (but I was too shocked to register anything except ā??!!ā)#(yāall I was in my pjs too I was sittin there without a bra šššššš)#eventually tho my face went from being shocked to being furious and I gotta say I havenāt heard myself use such an angry tone in a long time#but I basically demanded āWHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HEREā and their faces quickly paled and they backtracked by saying āoops wrong dormā#(likely story cuz mine and my roommates names are literally ON THE DOOR and that whole hall is FULLY LIT UP like how can you miss that???)#I talked with one of my friends about this (cuz I wanted to see what she thought and if maybe those guys really were mistaken)#but then she brought up that ^ point and yeah if I see em doing anything like that again Iāll prob report em to my ra or smth#but until then I guess my roommate and I will be making to sure keep our door properly locked š#š¶song singsš¶

I don't even consider myself Into BLs. I like ONE of them that actually fits the category.
#and what a BL it is#yeah like there's gay couples I like but of the danmei/bl/yaoi genre as a whole. eh ig there's no. 6 if that counts#but THE STEREOTYPES...#and in fairness a lot of the shit comes from the fans#like the top/bottom posts today reminded me of how much insane drama there is around that#but it's handled relatively normally in the actual canon. that's not what makes the sex scenes bad. its the consent stuff#wwx was also never called a wife idk where that came from. he said he WASN'T a wife at one point. in the BM I think#because he didn't wanna cook...#behind being literally 1 inch shorter than lwj and not as physically strong there's like nothing. I think it's fine#besides* oops. the fan landscape IS insane tho#cor.txt

Unfortunately for everyone involved, Brent doesn't understand the concept of being bought a joke, like, why would someone SPEND MONEY on a joke? Since Karen's his friend and bought him a shirt, he's like. Legally obligated to wear it at least once... ? Probably?
So while he suffers over the idea of wearing it and not wanting to wear it at work he eventually would wear it and Karen would suffer the fact she needs to actually not try to joke too much in a teasing way if it's gonna be Treated Seriously. Right suffering from being gay because oh, Brent looks nice in color. (Chris would find out about it at work that he missed Brent in color and just stares at Karen because she is an absolute menace how did she manage that.)
#oops i fell in love#it all started when i said i imagined brent getting his hair messed up by one of his cousins and right seeing it#and atticus is like DOESNT HE LOOK SO MUCH SEXIER LIKE THIS and brent agonizing bc he doesnt want to hear that from his cousin#and then right is like well im too gay for this conversation because yeah kind of on the cousins side#and atticus beaming and then the person i was telling said shed like to see him less formal#with like a short sleeved button up or just a jacket rather than a suit coat#and im like brent would turn to dust if you put him in short sleeves haha but a jacket would be nice! and doable! probably for him!#and then i realized WAIT KAREN WOULD ABSOLUTELY BUY A HAWAIIN SHIRT AS A JOKE FOR HIM#and he would not realize it was a joke and he has to please his friends or else they will be disappointed so he HAS to wear it#like he legally has to wear this shirt at some point but he would wear a suit coat over it but#it was a gift from karen :c he has to wear it :c :c she would be heartbroken for the gift to go to waste#and then everyone (karen and right in this situation) would be like oh no he looks miserable but also v good#for what it is worth there are many times where right points out to brent that the only reason paul talks to him sometimes is#because hes just really gay and paul is suffering a dude crush so clearly in the dumbass's brain the gay guy is the only solution#then points out I DONT EVEN TOUCH PEOPLE EVER WHY IS HE FUCKING LIKE THIS#and brent is like truly a mystery im sure it has nothing to do with his trust in you#but anyway#one day im gonna draw brent in that shirt and it will be miserable for him but hell do it for karen

Is there even any infrastructure for humans visiting merfolk underwater settlements? Or are they too deep for humans to comfortably dive/swim in? Or maybe the merfolk just say, "of course we don't have any support for you under several hundred feet of water. literally why would you even try?"
there's not any infrastructure for human (or any other sophont besides gorgons that already live there, anyhow) visitation! mostly that's because this is a bit of a first contact situation, albeit one that was born more out of political isolationism and not necessarily caring about the land-based sophonts...
basically, the current political entity overseeing all existing or known merfolk settlement is a fairly old one, that slowly grew from a smaller polity into a more all-encompassing unit by swallowing up its neighbors. it's more of a complicated shell game than this necessarily makes it seem - like i said, a lot of time has passed, and significant cultural shifts have happened within that time, as well as shifts and establishment on how its government and policies would function, so it's a little bit more of a larger conglomerate containing within it many smaller governments, who are allowed independent control of the populations within their allotted territories, just so long as they take up the job of translating the broader governmental laws and taxes down onto that population. the details are rather vague, and so long as the results are what the larger governmental body asked, the intermediary areas are allowed a lot of different ways to interpret what that means.
however, one of the things that got lost in that shuffle of politic and history was the presence of merfolk inland. historically, merfolk have actually periodically spent time inland! usually it was still very tied to the water, being more like seasonal beachcombing using temporary shelters and housing, but they utilized the land a lot more for potential resources and ways to live. the nomadic families especially used to take advantage of these opportunities, and there was much more interaction with landfolk in these contexts.
the exact way it was lost varies, in that not everyone agrees what came first or what was the reason or who did what, but most of this was probably limited and then lost due to the larger governmental body, in the process of colonization, banning merfolk from going up onto the land in order to prevent political enemies and refugees from fleeing up and onto the land, using it as a base of operations, or otherwise using it as a means to escape to other bodies of saltwater. like i said, these periods inland were mostly seasonal, and merfolk did still majorly depend on the water, so what merfolk did make settlements inland mostly ended up vanishing over time anyways - either through simply vanishing into landfolk populations, or through dying out, it wasn't particularly sustainable.
but, time still went on, and this ban remained, and somehow it slowly disseminated into popular thought that the land was just not really very interesting in the first place. sure, merfolk knew there was stuff up there, and other animals and even fairly smart animals, but that doesn't necessarily make it worth investigating. travel over land is hard for them, and it's hard for them to live on land for long periods of time, and everything that they need and depend on is in the ocean anyways. there's a lot less space to the land, there's nothing that would interest merfolk, it would be uncomfortable and painful for them to visit (a lot of myths and legends about the land and what lived there got started in this time, with a lot of focus on undead monsters that had dried out and were lit from within by the hateful light of the sun, and a lot of merfolk made a habit of coming up with scary stories about the weird things that must've lived in such an extreme environment), and there was a lot more political movements and such focused on other merfolk to begin with.
even moreso because merfolk still, technically, did go out onto land? it just wasn't very large portions of land, that is. mostly they would set up on much smaller islands and atolls, which would mostly be used for manufacturing or more technical jobs that required being done in the air. they really just needed the space, not anything specific already on the land itself, and the space was all functional, very little exploration or relaxation areas. sometimes these were used specifically to produce novelty items or experiences, but usually this didn't go much further than exploring the uniqueness of being in open air for the first time, and wasn't really pursued as much more than that.
so merfolk still knew the land was important and needed for ecological functioning - something they had learned the hard way, after an earlier period in their history pre-unifying government became known for a particular and acute ecological disaster, felt even harder by all merfolk on account of the properties of water and everyone living in the ocean. they view the land as functional in its own right - a needed recycling facility that operates itself and helps keep them alive, and one in a place that they had no interest in and could set aside for such tasks.
they also knew there was life up there, even intelligent life, but considering the period in time when merfolk ceased interacting with land-based societies, and the predominant view that what makes something sapient for them being a multiplicity and plural nature to it, on top of the complex interweave of language and meaning, they basically just viewed it as "smart animals". i've compared it before to like if we actually discovered warrior cats was real and there was a population of feral cats in a national park that had their own tiny society. it's interesting, for sure, but it wouldn't be the kind of thing that they might feel too passionately about, and can easily pass it off as a curiosity and a thought experiment all of its own.
the fact that this has changed at all, and especially in such a small time frame and with such major turnaround and abrupt interest in the outer governing body is actually really odd, and a major question and mystery in what i'm writing! the starting interest happened only just in the previous generation, and now they're making major steps towards introducing themselves to land-based civilizations in just miranda's generation, even to the point of sending her inland as an ambassador and an active participant in this shift.
most people on the land already knew that someone was in the ocean and actively preventing anyone else from crossing it or even getting particularly close, but they had no context for this any more than anyone else, and thus they might not raise as many questions about why this is happening than they should, especially since they don't know merfolk history. even most merfolk don't necessarily have all of the details of this shift, but they do know more than nothing, and certainly can note how odd it is and how weird such a change is.
likewise, neither civilization has very much to accommodate for the other, given as they barely even knew of each other by the time they were already designing how it was laid out, so the issues humans have accessing merfolk spaces is at least mutual, if nothing else. it's also something very likely to change over time, depending on how said first contact goes.
#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#asks#brothermanwill#theres also the aspect of. said governmental body enforcing that border and ban on contact#and majorly affecting the history and development of everyone else who wasnt a merfolk#because the ocean is now entirely inaccessible#many empires have ceased to exist because Oops You Need Naval Power For That#many places dependent on fishing have also vanished too tbh-#most of humanity's big cities and cutting edge technology is confined the usual river valleys#and other towns and cities exist but they are much less interconnected and have much more varying levels of whats available#the only way ''over'' the oceans is through setting up teleportation gates with everything they need on both ends#because making flying machines just. ah. results in them vanishing and Never Coming Back#but also yeah unless you use magic theres just no way down to most merfolk areas if you dont breathe water#theyre fairly deep too. even the more shallow settlements are very much deeper than most humans are ready for#and only those island stations are anywhere that you might be able to regularly return to the surface from#theres also the issue of magic which is. another reason why a waterbreathing spell isnt Easy#magic and especially magic that affects the body is so complicated and so easy to mess up#and when it messes up. it messes up Bad.#anyhow thank you for the question!! i am. chatty.#the gorgons who settled underwater just live like merfolk tbh#and thus their opinions arent really meaningfully different#i dont think they even know there are gorgons inland tbh. not sure they would care if they did.

I know I'm becoming a TAI... blog so I just have to put my honest opinion out there: The Scary Kids Scaring Kids first EP (After Dark) is better than The Academy Is...'s The Academy first EP. Both as a first release, post-hardcore EP, and in general.
#yeah i did finally listen to The Academy a week ago#or days idk#oops forgot i didnt finish making this post š got distracted looking at wikipedia and then looking into#micheal guy chislett. the deal PROBABLY isn't him becoming way too christian but#the way i am that's what i first assume so i find that funny (if it is: BASED)#anyways yes the production quality is a factor. but the sksk songs are also jsut straight up catchier#I said this#scary kids scaring kids#<- tag nothign happens in and no one ever likes my posts under#sksk#tai...#the academy is...#the academy ep#after dark ep#the academy is#emo#(it's unclear to me exactly what level of christian he is and i'm not about to listen to hillsong to find out)

i wanted to make a post about a thing but the more i think about it the more i want to say and it's just going to end up being a big ramble essay, so instead i'll just give the thesis statement, thusly:
as the #1 Ratgrinders Apologist (self-appointed), of course they're the final boss fight to the death. i expected nothing less and the people trying to make discourse about it are ignoring the entire context of this being a Dungeons and Dragons game
#they're not playing 'discuss our traumas and and try to help strangers grow: the game'#they're playing 'murder people for getting in our way: the game'#which i know is now me being snubbing about D&D as a game but like. siobhan said it: theyve committed SO much murder#did the lunch lady in episode 2 deserve to be murdered? did the skater dwarves deserved to be murdered?#did the monsters the school sicced on the kids in their Last Stand deserve to be slaughtered like that??#its literally the name of the game!#the two things that are turning this into a bigger essay are 1) me being actually very disappointed in Burrow's End with how the players#just did not want at all to engage with the moral greyness aabria was trying to bring into the story#it was clear that was a direction she wanted to explore and i wanted to see it explored#but even OUT of characters the cast just would NOT engage or acknowledge the validity of that direction#and there was only so much aabria could do without being labeled a killjoy... because D&D often ISN'T a game for reckoning with#the justification of your character's actions! its a game for killing giant bears and saving the town from cultists!!#baked into the foundation of the game conceit is 'you are the hero and you are saving the day ergo your actions are Right and Just'#thing 2) i just listened to that WWW fireside the other day where brennan goes on about how combat does not get in the way#of story in dnd. that whole stove metaphor? and it rankled me so much lol because like aabria finally says after that:#yeah you bring your own food to the stove but when what you've got is a stove. the food you make is GOING to get cooked#combat and fighting and killing is baked into the system from its foundation. acting like D&D or even just d20 (the system)#is a resolution engine that also allows fighting and not a fighting engine that also allows other skills is. wishful thinking i think#and to bring this back to the POINT: of COURSE they're going to kill the rat grinders! because it's fun!#because thats how you resolve conflict in a combat game! straight up i honestly believe a lengthy conversation trying to win the kids over#would have been a weird energy to end the season on! it would have been a let down!#it would have been a huge tonal shift. because the tone you bring to a D&D game is 'killing this is fine actually'#and if you dont like that you /dont/ play D&D. its not a value judgment#i LOVE getting into moral implications and justifications and ive gotta tone it down when i run D&D games because it can kill the vibe#anyway. i said i wasnt going to write the whole essay and im not. but i did write most of the rant oops
