Socialization & Familiarization Class!
It's here! My new course is open for enrollment!
This is a Karen Pryor Academy LIVE course that lets me geek out enthusiastically about a cause I'm invested in -- using socialization and familiarization properly to give dogs the best chance at fitting into human society and becoming fantastic family members and/or workers.
The course is entirely online, in both pre-recorded lessons and real-time discussion and feedback. Enrollment is available with coaching for your own training (Excel) or auditing with discussion access (Engage).
(Socialization is for the specific socialization period of brain development; after that narrow window, the process is familiarization. We'll talk about both!)

Join the Movement!
Change is Coming to Dog Training—Are You Ready?
youtube
Dog Training Will Never Be the Same—Be Part of the Revolution!
The old way of training is outdated. Commands, corrections, and control-based methods are failing dogs and their owners.
A new era of dog training is here—one that’s science-backed, nature-inspired, and built on trust, not force.
This isn’t just training. It’s transformation.
🚀 Are you ready to break free from outdated methods and experience something revolutionary?
The 5 Pillars of the New Dog Training Movement
1️⃣ Emotional Resilience: Teach Your Dog to Stay Calm Under Pressure
✔ No more fear-based reactions—your dog will learn to regulate emotions. ✔ Handle distractions with ease—no more training breakdowns in real-world situations. ✔ Train the mind first, behavior follows naturally.
2️⃣ Natural Communication: Train the Way Dogs Actually Learn
✔ Less control, more connection—ditch micromanaging and teach your dog to check in naturally. ✔ Master body language & energy-based training—speak a language your dog actually understands. ✔ Balanced training, the way it’s done in nature.
3️⃣ Social Learning: Let Dogs Teach Dogs
✔ Well-balanced dogs model good behavior for others. ✔ Confidence-building through structured pack interaction. ✔ Faster learning, more reliable real-world obedience.
4️⃣ Play as a Training Tool: Make Learning Fun and Effective
✔ Use structured games to reinforce obedience. ✔ Turn training into a bonding experience instead of a chore. ✔ Boost engagement, impulse control, and learning retention.
5️⃣ Training That Evolves With Your Dog
✔ Customized for every life stage—puppy, adolescent, adult, and senior. ✔ Adapts as behaviors change over time. ✔ A lifelong training system—not just a quick fix.
Are You Ready to Train Smarter, Not Harder?
Most training focuses on what your dog should do. But behavior isn’t just about commands—it’s about how your dog feels, learns, and processes the world.
By training with their emotions, instincts, and senses in mind, we make good behavior natural, reliable, and enjoyable for both of you.

I get a lot of asks about training advice and I'm always like "well I am not a professional in any capacity" and also I forget every book I have ever read etc the moment someone asks me, but I remembered at random today that my very talented friend has written a really amazing training book that I think would be especially good for the people who tend to ask me this, bc Bridger has ADHD (LIKE DO MANY OF US) and is therefore really good at breaking things down into digestible chunks! this is one of the things I find most challenging about training so I think this is an extra valuable thing to have in a book.
It's mostly training basics for people who are beginners, but in a way where you can use the info the build a LOT of skills once you grasp the basics, and I really vibe with Bridger's ethics around training as well.
it's called Level Up Your Dog Training by Natalie Bridger Watson and I'm going to provide a couple different links where you can get it.
Amazon link:
Support a small business link:
(Bridger adds: "Also for accessibility, there is a large print paperback edition (Amazon only) and a digitally-narrated audiobook (Google Play only, trying to get it available more places). Am aware of the ethical implications of AI narration and would like to replace this with a human-narrated version when I can, but that costs $1,000-$2,000+ to hire out, so the not-ideal compromise is digitally-narrated for accessibility in the short term with plans to do better when I can.")
Anyway this is a really great book and not recommended as often as it should be bc it's just not one of the standard go-to books (yet!!!) so I thought I would plug it and in doing so answer all the training rec asks I get all the time and am so bad at answering 🤣
#dog t#PLS FEEL FREE TO REBLOG ITS A RLY GOOD BOOK.#other online training content i like include smart bitch dog training#superpup academy#ummm#cogdog ofc but a lot of that goes over my head bc im not a sports guy lol.

Service dog awareness rant
So, I went to Barnes & Noble with my friend on Sunday. My local B&N is pet friendly, so I brought my dog too, and my friend had her service dog. Anyway, we did our shopping, and my dog, who I’ve spent two years working on socializing properly, was SUPER good and stayed right next to me pretty much the whole time, which is what I want so she’s not bothering anyone or getting in the way.
My friend went over to get a drink from the Starbucks in the store before we left, but because I had my non-service dog with me, I waited over by the door away from the dining area. The security guard near where I was standing started talking to me, and he asked if my dog was a service dog, to which I replied that no, she’s not. If anything, I’m her service human because she’s almost 100% deaf. This guy goes on to say that I could just get her a service dog vest and be able to take her everywhere because she’s so well behaved that no one would think she’s not a service dog. I hate confrontation and was honestly just too flabbergasted to respond, but oh my word, N O. I would NEVER try to pass off my dog as a service dog just to take her places with me that she’s not allowed in because she’s a pet. And this guy was a SECURITY GUARD. My friend and I were both appalled because I told her about it on the way back to the car.
Like, I’m flattered that my formerly anxious mess of a dog behaves well enough to have multiple people (not just the security guard) think she was a service dog, so I know I’m doing something right with her training the past two years, but I’m also appalled that anyone thinks it’s okay to fake having a service dog just to be able to bring their PET everywhere with them. Just… no. Don’t do that. It makes things so much harder for people like my friend who NEED their service dogs. And not only is it illegal, but it’s also legitimately unsafe for your pet dog, and for anyone who has a service dog because many pet dogs aren’t trained nearly well enough to be safe around service dogs who are working.
And before anyone comes for me, my dog is safe around my friend’s dog because they know each other, and my dog doesn’t really react to other dogs unless they’re in her space and she doesn’t know them, but regardless, I wouldn’t ever ALLOW her to distract a working service dog. My dog and my friend’s dog get along great, and mine is not a distraction to her dog because he’s used to her. If my friend and I are going somewhere that’s not pet friendly, my dog stays at home, regardless of how well behaved she is in public.

Okay friends. Say you were getting a puppy for the very very first time and didn't know much about dogs or dog training. What are some topics you would like to learn about in an online class?
This can be anything from teaching them how to sit or stay, or nutrition, or how to socialize them, etc.
#I'm putting together an online puppy class that I'm going to sell through my dog training business in the future#and I'm trying to think up what kinds of topics would be helpful

When I got my dog, because I was working as a dog trainer and had a lot of pressure on me there to preform well, and because she is a “difficult” breed, I felt ENORMOUS pressure to be like the best dog owner ever and best trainer ever and make her perfect. I had panic attacks from guilt and anxiety that I wasn’t doing enough with her. And I worked my ass off, but the training place I worked at was horrible and taught me horrible, stupid things and I made a lot of mistakes with her. But she still ended up so wonderful, even if theres some shit I fucked up with her.
So its like… I always am aware I miiiight be projecting some of that guilt and insecurity about how I raised my own dog onto others, but I genuinely cannot understand when other people have barely any drive to learn to train their dogs, even in a way thats just for the dog’s benefit (like say, desensitizing them to grooming and vet visits). Its almost physically painful to me when someone keeps bringing their puppy that is Horrific for nail trims in to the vet to have us force the dog to let us do it, when the dog is at a critical age where they have the best odds of turning them around and learning cooperative care. And like I get it cooperative care is so damn time and patience consuming especially with a dog thats already adverse to something, and im not perfect with it and its one think i regret neglecting to do more with my puppy, but my god nothing is worse than watching cute little german shepherds knowing theyre going to devolve into little monsters at the vet that need 3 ppl to hold them down for nail trims (which lol is another issue I just have in general that I dont think we should be doing that at the vet, but thats not my choice lmao).
I just. Dont understand why we are city people out here getting australian shepherds, shiba inus, huskies and german shepherds and shit and not doing like. Anything with them. Then throwing them at already overworked grooming and vet professionals like “good luck.” Like if u got ur dog as an adult thats one thing (but still not always a lost cause) but ppl with puppies… try? A little? Like ur GONNA fuck up with your first dog, I sure did. But like most ppl are not Trying, at least not hard enough. It is nottt normalized enough and education is not out there enough how to properly desensitize your dog to things and do basic socialization. And not enough people realize this needs to start DAY ONE of bringing home your 8 wk or however old puppy, not waiting til 8 months later when they have major issues (bc all teenage dogs are assholes but its so much worse if they have no good foundations as a puppy). I dont even give af if ur dog can walk on a leash, just like maybe help them not think theyre being murdered when someone holds them in a light restraint or touches their feet
#and if ur like i have tried everything and my dog still bad this obviously isnt about u. its just like most ppl will never seek professiona#training help or even look for resources online to help them outside whatever tf wikihow says

urg. multiple DTIMA (dog trainers in my area) of various sides of the training debate are holding jor/pulling sport seminars and guess who has experience in these sports??? none of them.
#dogblr#sorry but are you just going to put client dogs in shitty fitting equipment#and or equipment that is not meant for pulling sports and just...have at it??#because. don't.#i internally plea for these folks to contact one of the many insured mushers around here#but alas...#also having your dog run attached on the side of a bicycle does not clear you to train joring in my mind. sorry.#like honestly at this point a decent self trainer can probably do better with well informed online literature#than potentially throwing their dog into this during a rando seminar#just because you are good with helping clients with their dogs from an obedience stand point does not = good at teaching sports#there are many people that can do both but equally if not more that are not capable of this from lack of experience
