Fic idea where Arthur and merlin go hunting (the other knights can also be there. It's up to you, but I'm just gonna do merlin and arthur for this) and they end up having to stay in the woods overnight. Well, arthur gets cold in the middle of the night and reaches over to ask merlin to go get the spare blanket from the horses. He does this by saying some variation of "Merlin, I'm cold." Then merlin, who is half asleep and not really registering what he is saying, just rolls over and sprawls out over arthur and falls back asleep. Arthur has a moment of internal panic before realizing that he is, in fact, very warm like this and decides to just leave it for the morning. They wake up from the best sleep ever, and Merlin is mortified, and Arthur (who already has this whole panic moment) is kinda like🤷🏼‍♂️

#this is also on brand for merlin #bc he grew up in a poor village that had really harsh winter's #so it was probably normal for him to curl up with his friends during the winter #just imagine all the kids in ealdor just sitting in one big cuddle pile around merlin #bc hes using magic to keep himself warm #i just imagined it and it was adorable omg #merlin #bbc merlin #merthur #arthur pendragon

I find the way that BBC Merlin set up Merlin's powers in the first episode to be quite funny. I mean, we see this sort of lanky guy and it is established that he is Merlin and (according to our own common knowledge) therefore he is the most powerful warlock ever. Okay, cool. One might assume that he has come to Gaius to develop his powers, that maybe he's only in the beginning of his magical journey. But instead the exposition shows Merlin, in the pilot episode of this 5 series show, stop time and employ levitation to save someone's life with magic, and then it is announced that prince Arthur is essentially his soulmate, and their joint power will create the most glorious age Camelot has ever seen. Quite an exciting set-up. And then for the rest of the entire show this man who we know possesses TIME-ALTERING POWERS mostly uses them on-screen to do common chores and annoy and prank THAT SAME Arthur. Like that one post said, "All of it's destiny and all of it's his fault." :p

#i also think something tragic comes out of this #he thought things would go as destiny said they would so he did not really try to contradict arthur at all #also poor morgana - but that's a whole other topic #perpetuating repressed queerphobia metaphor? never #he is set up as an almost-god almighty and loving and kind #and both merlin and us imagine this beautiful kingdom #but then even when arthur is king nothing really changes #and it's for many factors one of which is that nothing changes without a fight (queer metaphor? never)#and another is just the heartbreaking fact that merlin is too compassionate for radical action #merlin loves arthur in one way or another #but still his love doesn't compete with his kindness #so at least firstly he can't bring himself to sacrifice someone in the present for an abstract future arthur #a god cannot afford to be too kind #especially not when it comes to time #and even in the pilot his godly powers are attached to a kindness #an obvious one like saving a life #but still a kindness that perhaps not everyone would have employed #bbc merlin #merthur #i'm sorry merlin - you deserved more

when merlin asks arthur for things, the king is usually inclined to give him what he wants but it is not always guaranteed such as when his emotions cloud his judgement. but merlin’s surefire way of getting arthur to give in? he steps into his space, lays a gentle hand on his arm, and says “arthur, please” and he folds like a house of cards.

#arthur is so used to people keeping their distance and referring to his with his titles and honorifics and whatnot #so when merlin treats him like a normal person and touches him gently and speaks his name?#hes so overwhelmed by the intimacy and warmth that he agrees to whatever merlin is saying/asking #even the knights who are a close band of brothers still use titles and honorifics #rarely if ever do they just use his name #so his brain melts when merlin does #especially all soft like that #bbc merlin #merlin emrys #arthur pendragon #merthur #it takes merlin a long time to figure this lil trick out bc hes not one for pleading or begging #so the situation was dire when he first did this #and arthur gave in without a second thought so merlin filed it away #over a long period of time he tested it out and found that no matter what he was asking arthur would give it to him if he did this #fanfiction #fanfic #fic ideas #prompts

Do you ever think about how for almost 1000 years there's this story about a King named Arthur with an old man wizard advisor named Merlin and then in 2008 (and onward) it got rewired to where we're writing fanfiction and making art and edits of them kissing?

If you told someone 20 years ago that you wanted to see King Arthur and Merlin kiss they would've thought you were crazy.
