My real ultimate Maul Meta is that as a character he is primarily motivated by fear. Not anger, not power. His tendency to seek power is not necessarily because he actually wants it (as evidenced by the fact that he lets vos/qi'ra run the show, he doesn't want to be front of house so to speak) but because he's afraid. His powerbase is security for him. His need for an apprentice is also about security because the only one who can backstab you is the person watching your back.

His most telling scenes are when he talks about sidious and his very visible fear. Probably THE most illuminating scene is him begging ahsoka to let him die and his subsequent freakout, since he has just failed to convince her to fight with him + he doesn't want to be kidnapped and returned to sidious. Death is preferable to being remanded to sidious' care - particularly after he has just spent some amount of time being tortured. Presumably he then fucks off to Dathomir for the next 19 years quietly running his side business and staying far the fuck away from anything with even a distant whiff of sidious
