Elftober #6: Memory

Isillud adjusts his coat, pulling it into himself as he looks silently at the pictures, each scenery a page from an album of memories. Oudine looks at her cousin, an inscrutable quietness falling over him as well. "…I needn't really stay, Izzy." His boots click and clack on the tiled floor as he inspects each pic. Breathe, Izzy, he tells himself. Like these pictures, it is in the past. "It's all right." Her brows furrow, but she bites her lower lip and moves.

"...We used to find the highest point in Mor Dhona and look for the tower." "Well… we've found it today," is her soft reply. "I'll wait near the Azure Dragoon. Take your time." Isillud's smile does not quite reach his eyes. "When I was finally brave enough to step out of Mor Dhona to hunt, to take leves, I could see it anytime I wanted. I don't know if Joshua managed to see it on his own. I've never asked. I'd like to think he did." His voice stops her, and she returns. Wordlessly, she puts one hand on his shoulder, squeezing past the coat. He takes a deep breath. "The adventurers in Revenant's Toll made lots of jokes about it." He gently pats her hand, "But those jokes aren't for a lady's ears." It looks almost like a window, with the light dancing across the picture like moving clouds. "I should pay a visit someday." She keeps her hand there, but the grip loosens. "Perhaps we can come with you. If you would permit."

"Not that I mind, but your opinion of me might change greatly." Oudine looks him in his impossibly green eyes. Perhaps it would. Perhaps she would indeed see him differently. "I was younger and more naive," he adds. She nods, slowly. "I do not doubt that. So were we all." She looks back to the moving painting, falling silent. After a while, she says, low-voiced, "Whoever you were in Revenant's Toll, I think he did his best in such circumstances. And for that, I would honour his existence and refrain from judgement." "…There's the Oudine I know." Oudine looks at him, the smile small, but warm. "Thank you Izzy. For returning to us." "Thank you for receiving us, Viscount."
