The Ghost of Achilles
"Achilles is said to have appeared once to a merchant who frequented the island [of Leuke], relating to him what had occurred in Troy while entertaining him with drink, and he ordered him to sail to Ilion and bring him back a particular Trojan maiden, who was a slave to a certain man in Ilion.
The guest was astonished at the command, and boldly asked Achilles why he needed a Trojan slave. Achilles answered, "Because, my guest, she is from the same line as Hektor and his ancestors, and is the last of the blood of the children of Priamos and Dardanos." Of course, the merchant thought Achilles was in love, and after he bought the maiden he sailed back to the island.
Achilles praised the merchant and ordered him to keep the maiden for him on the ship (I suppose because no women where allowed on the island), but to come to the sanctuary that evening and feast sumptuously with him and Helen. When he came, Achilles gave him many things merchants are unable to resist, and said he considered him his guest friend, and granted him a prosperous voyage and fair sailing.
At daybreak Achilles said, "Now take these things and sail away, but leave the girl on the shore for me." They had not yet gone a stade away from land when the girl‘s screaming struck them—Achilles was tearing her apart, and ripping her limb from limb." (Philostratus. On Heroes 56. 6-10)

"In the Canary Islands, in Barcelona, and in Chile, a unique fog catcher design is sustaining dry forests with water without emissions, or even infrastructure.
Replicating how pine needles catch water, the structure need only be brought on-site and set up, without roads, powerlines, or irrigation channels.
Fog catching is an ancient practice—renamed “cloud milking” by an EU-funded ecology project on the Canary Islands known as LIFE Nieblas (nieblas means fog).
“In recent years, the Canaries have undergone a severe process of desertification and we’ve lost a lot of forest through agriculture. And then in 2007 and 2009, as a result of climate change, there were major fires in forested areas that are normally wet,” said Gustavo Viera, the technical director of the publicly-funded project in the Canaries.
The Canaries routinely experience blankets of fog that cloak the islands’ slopes and forests, but strong winds made fog-catching nets an unfeasible solution. In regions such as the Atacama Desert in Chile or the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, erecting nets that capture moisture particles out of passing currents of fog is a traditional practice.
LIFE Nieblas needed a solution that could resist powerful winds, and to that end designed wind chime-like rows of artificial pine needles, which are also great at plucking moisture from the air. However, unlike nets or palms, they efficiently let the wind pass through them.
The water is discharged without any electricity. There are no irrigation channels, and no machinery is needed to transport the structures. The natural course of streams and creeks need not be altered, nor is there a need to drill down to create wells. The solution is completely carbon-free.

In the ravine of Andén in Gran Canaria, a 35.8-hectare (96 acres) mixture of native laurel trees irrigated by the fog catchers enjoys a survival rate of 86%, double the figure of traditional reforestation.
“The Canaries are the perfect laboratory to develop these techniques,” said Vicenç Carabassa, the project’s head scientist, who works for the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications at the University of Barcelona. “But there are other areas where the conditions are optimal and where there is a tradition of water capture from fog, such as Chile and Morocco.”
In Chile’s Coquimbo province, the town of Chungungo is collecting around 250 gallons a day from a combination of locally-made fog catchers and LIFE Nieblas’ pine needle design, the Guardian reports."

stardew valley au where joel and skizz are new residents to pelican town (hermit town?). joel just inherited a large farm from his late grandfather and skizz is moving in with his old friend after reconnecting with him and wanting a fresh start. and the townspeople are like, kinda weird.
bdubs is fine enough - he’s a sweet man with a fun personality and he’s the local builder, but it’s almost frightening how fast he constructs new buildings when joel needs them. pearl, their resident postmaster, is also pretty normal other than the fact that skizz never seems to be awake early enough to catch her delivering mail. scar is lovely but he’s never available when joel wants another chicken. the mayor, xisuma, is pleasant too, if a little eccentric at times, but he doesn’t really seem to do much in town.
for the most part, skizz is settling in well. he’s moved in with impulse, who runs the local blacksmith in town, and he gets along well with most of the local townspeople. he’s started spending his evenings at the local saloon listening to ren regale the patrons with fantastical tales while he and stress serve up food and drinks, and he finds himself growing close with cleo, the local sculptor. he even gets a new wardrobe from hypno free of charge, and sometimes helps cub out with his totally scientific studies and creations.
skizz also joins forces with beef (who helps to supply the local general store that xb and keralis run) in terrorising the local manager of the corporate chain grocery store that no one likes. doc is a terrible manager but would make a fun supervillain (according to joe hills, the bookseller who appears once in a blue moon but seems to know doc more than anyone in town).
joel, on the other hand, seems to only be interacting with the strangest residents in town. he discovers the adventurer’s guild after only a couple weeks. false promises to give him prizes if he can kill enough monsters, which is not something joel had expected to be doing when he pictured farm life, but here he is. he stumbles upon a travelling cart one day, and the man inside insists he’s a knight from a faraway land, that he risked his life to make it all the way here to sell his wares. it’s all stuff joel can get cheaper elsewhere.
he’s pretty sure the local doctor has no real medical training, but then he passes out while fighting monsters and he wakes up completely fine, so zedaph probably knows what he’s doing. maybe. when joel isn’t passing out he sometimes makes trips to the library-slash-museum, which is probably almost completely empty because mumbo, who begs joel for anything to display, looks like he’s never fought a duggie in his life. eventually mumbo gives joel a key to the sewers, which are way cooler than they have any right to be, and that’s where he finds jevin’s secret sewer shop. jevin lives in town. he just also has a shop hidden underground. joel has stopped asking questions by now.
and then there are the three who live by the beach. etho spends most of his time tinkering around the fishing hut or hovering around bdubs, but sometimes he drives the bus to the desert. only sometimes. there might be something under his mask. no one knows for sure. gem runs the fish shop most days and she claims she’s a sailor, but joel has never seen a single working boat around despite all the ocean. she can also hold her breath underwater for an uncannily long amount of time, like, scarily so, and will sometimes disappear for a few days and return with an abundance of treasures. joel has never seen her leave by boat. grian fishes a lot and runs the shop when gem can’t, and he sometimes talks as though the sea can speak to him. skizz has caught him staring into space for extended periods of time. one time he waded into the water and just stood there, head down, muttering to himself.
apparently there used to be a lighthouse but “it’s gone now”. gem says if they ask bdubs nicely enough maybe they can build another one, but she and grian are banned from build requests after the last incident with their pet snails (joel has never seen the snails, but scar complains about them enough to convince him they’re real).
there also might be some kind of wizard who lives in the creepy tower in the woods. skizz has heard he’s the one who helps maintain the power in the valley, and joel’s convinced he hallucinated seeing him once until he recieves a letter from the wizard himself, and visits him only to find that the strange fire-creature he saw that one time was, in fact, tango, who is human for the most part, he just sets himself on fire sometimes.
#some of these ones probably suit them more than others sorry if u think ‘he woukd not fucking say that’#unfortunately i do know some of them way less than the others#so i’m going off general vibes i get from them + what i think would be fun#it is SO HARD!!! to fit 27 people into stardew roles. especially when i didnt include the desert or ginger island#the desert and ginger island are actually populated by friends of the hermits but thats for another post#if anyone wants elaboration on why i chose certain things for people i would be happy to#hermitcraft#geminitay#grian#smallishbeans#pearlescentmoon#zombiecleo#rendog#gtwscar#impulsesv#skizzleman#tangotek#falsesymmetry#mumbo jumbo#ethoslab#bdouble0#hypnotizd#welsknight#xbcrafted#keralis#cubfan135#stressmonster101#vintagebeef#joe hills

something that I feel the movie (and the novelization I had as a kid) and honestly most fanworks I've seen kind of gloss over is the fact that in A New Hope, the VERY first planet that Luke goes to after leaving Tatooine is a fucking rainforest
Like can you imagine. You've spent your entire life in a place where water is so precious that an entire industry has been built around pulling tiny bits of moisture from the very atmosphere, every single drop is precious and worth twice it's weight in gold.
And then when you leave, you go first to a space station with extremely strict climate control, and then to a FUCKING RAINFOREST
It would be like someone who has lived their entire life in Death Valley suddenly being picked up and set back down in the middle of the Amazon
Luke should have been complaining that the air is like soup bc this boy has never experienced humidity over probably 8% in his entire life and now he's being faced with 98% humidity. Han what is this. Why is everything WET. Stop laughing at me I feel like I'm drowning WHAT IS THIS.
#sw#anh#luke skywalker#as someone who moved from the high desert to a tropical island i just think that we should use this moment more#poor luke. he's about to find out that 100% does not mean that its raining.#*100% humidity#max is talking

Hi Gina, I was watching some older interviews and came across something that made me jump but I’ve only seen a couple of comments about it. Their Oct 30 2012 livestream with Scott Mills (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKjCkH-iCEE), which is the one where people hear L accidentally calling H ‘baby’ but to me it’s too garbled to be clear — but what I can hear really clearly (particularly slowed down) is while L’s giving his answer to ‘which 3 people would you take to a desert island’, Z asks him ‘are you not going to take your man?’. The segment starts at ~41.30, and that comment at ~45.25. Z unsubtly prods L from the beginning about who he’d take, the whole thing is typically pure chaos lol
Yeah, I completely heard it now that you’ve pointed it out. But it’s absolute chaos with all of them taking over each other that I’d never heard it before. 😅

"He's started catching fish," said the Senior Wrangler. "That means he'll come over all smug and start asking what plans we've got for making a boat at any minute, you know what he's like."
The Dean looked at some sketches he'd made on a rock.
"How hard can it be to build a boat?" he said. "People with bones in their noses build boats. And we are the end product of thousands of years of enlightenment. Building a boat is not beyond men like us, Senior Wrangler."
"Quite, Dean."
"All we have to do is search this island until we find a book with a title like Practical Boat-Building for Beginners."
"Exactly. It'll be plain sailing after that, Dean. Ahaha."
