Ancient Roman Laundry Uncovered Near the Vatican in Italy

1,700-year-old laundry tubs and tiled floors were discovered by construction workers.

Construction workers in Italy recently came across the site of an ancient laundry near the Vatican, officials say.

Italy's Ministry of Culture announced the surprising findings in a press release on June 14. The discovery was made during construction efforts at Piazza Pia, a Roman square that Italian officials are "pedestrianizing."

Pictures of the site show archaeologists uncovering ancient tiled floors several feet below ground level. Tubs, which were used to clean dirty clothes, were also found at the site.

Excavators also uncovered what appear to be ceramic shards from destroyed artifacts. Officials also discovered pits, which may have once been used as baths.

In a statement, Italian officials said that the site was likely built to be an imperial residence. The housing would have overlooked the Tiber River "in a scenic way with arcades, walks and gardens," officials described.

Between the second and third centuries, the site became a fullonica – or a laundry.

According to the World History Encyclopedia, launderers in ancient Rome used human and animal urine as detergent. They often collected urine – which contains ammonia – from public restrooms.

"The urine was poured into a vat with the clothing and the fullers (or their slaves) would tread on the cloth, agitating it the way a modern-day washing machine does, to remove stains and odors," the World History Encyclopedia's website reads.

"This profession continued, operating in the same way with the same cleaning agents, for hundreds of years after the fall of the Roman Empire and up into the modern age when soap replaced urine."

Romans would bring their dirty laundry to a fullonica and pay to have it cleaned. Even though citizens generally looked down on launderers for their unhygienic washing methods, launderers were paid very well.

In a statement, Archbishop Rino Fisichella said that the recent discovery of the fullonica "brought [him] back in time."

"This part of Rome will again be made visible to all, and as a citizen I can only express a sense of deep gratitude," he said. "[The laundry room] was the meeting place of the people, the people, the women of the era."

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles

Happy Birthday Batman

An official DC Comics calendar published for 1976 identified February 19th as Bruce Wayne’s birthday.  Other dates have been mentioned in the comics as possibly being the Batman’s birthday yet the nineteenth of February still seems the most canonically recognized.  Really, a Pisces?  

In any case, to celebrate the Dark Knight’s birthday here are paper cut-outs of Batman in all his various animated forms.  Who knew there were so many?

The Adventures Of Batman was the first Batman cartoon series and ran from 1968 to 1969.  It stared Olan Soule in the role of Batman with a young Casey Kasem in the role of Robin. 

The SuperFriends brought Batman together with the world’s greatest heroes and ran from 1973 all the way to 1986.  Soul and Kasem both reprised their roles as Batman and Robin in the series.

The New Adventures of Batman ran for a single season in 1977 featuring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin.  This was a particularly silly show and featured a great deal of a magical imp known as Bat-Mite.  

1992 saw the advent of the greatest cartoon of all time as Batman: The Animated Series debuted and ran through to 1995.  The great Kevin Conroy provided the voice for Batman.

The New Batman Adventures was a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series with some updated stylistic changes.  It ran from 1997 to 1999, featuring Conroy as Batman.  

Batman Beyond entailed a Gotham City of the future where an aged Bruce Wayne trains a young man on his path to filling the mantle of The Batman.  It ran from 1999 to 2001 and stared Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne and Will Friedle as his protégé, Terry McGinnis.

Justice League brought the Superfriends back together this time under the banner of The Justice League (and later Justice League Unlimited).  It ran from 2001 to 2006 and once more featured Kevin Conroy in the role of Batman.

The Batman, which ran from 2004 to 2008, departed from the continuity established in Batman: The Animated Series and presented a new version of the Caped Crusader and his various allies and adversaries.  It starred Rino Romano in the role of Batman with Evan Sabara and Danielle Judovits as Robin and Batgirl.    

Echoing the campiness of 1966, Batman: The Brave and The Bold was a fun, light-hearted anthology series that ran from 2004 to 2008.  Each episode saw Batman teaming up with different heroes of the DC Universe for madcap adventures.  Diedrich Bader stared as Batman.

The series Young Justice, which ran non-concurrently from 2010 to 2022, focused primarily on Robin and the other younger heroes as they made their way from being sidekicks to a team in the own right.  Batman featured in many of the episodes where he was voiced by Bruce Greenwood.  

Beware the Batman from for a single season in 2013.  Anthony Ruivivar voiced Batman in this dark, largely computer animated series.  

Batman Unlimited ran from 2015 to 2016.  This was primarily a commercial in animated form featuring short, action-packed stories in tandem with the release of action figures and toy vehicles.  Roger Craig Smith provided the voice for Batman. 

Justice League Action brought back the League for more light-hearted adventures with a star-studded cast.  It ran from 2016 to 2018 with Kevin Conroy returning to once again voice Batman.  

Batman appeared as a periodic guest star in the DC Super Hero Girls series, which ran from 2019 to 2022.  Herein Batman spoke in a barely audible growl that only the other characters could comprehend.  Whereas actor Keith Ferguson provided the voice for Bruce Wayne, who further hid his secret identity as the the Caped Crusader by featuring in the ridiculous reality TV show, ‘Making it Wayne.’

A lampooned version of the Dark Knight sporadically features in the zany Harley Quinn animated series, premiering in 2019.   Diedrich Bader reprises his role from Batman: The Brave and The Bold, voicing this decidedly goofier version of the Dark Knight.

And finally, hopefully debuting some time soon, Batman: The Caped Crusader acts as a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series and features the final acting role of the late, great Kevin Conroy, reprising Batman one last time.

Extreme Ghostbusters: The Complete Series will be released on manufactured-on-demand DVD on March 19 via Sony. A sequel to The Real Ghostbusters, the animated series was syndicated for one season in 1997.

At this stage there are no plans to release these digital works in a physical form, but if these plans change they will be announced through Fujii's official channels.

When news of Assange’s release broke last night, we were right on top of the story:

Revolver: The nightmare is over for Julian Assange. Reports are hitting the wire that he struck a deal for his release, a development that’s being celebrated by freedom-loving people, his supporters, and especially his family. The momentum actually began about a month ago, when Assange won an appeal to contest his extradition to the United States.

NBC News: WASHINGTON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge this week as part of a plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department that will allow him to go free after spending five years in a British prison, according to court documents.

Assange was charged by criminal information — which typically signifies a plea deal — with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, the court documents say. A letter from Justice Department official Matthew McKenzie to U.S. District Judge Ramona Manglona of the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands said that Assange would appear in court at 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday (or, 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday) to plead guilty and said that DOJ expects Assange will return to Australia, his country of citizenship, after the proceedings.

U.S. charges against Assange stem from one of the largest publications of classified information in American history, which took place during the first term of Barack Obama’s presidency. Starting in late 2009, according to the government, Assange conspired with Chelsea Manning, a military intelligence analyst, to disclose tens of thousands of activity reports about the war in Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of reports about the war in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of State Department cables and assessment briefs of Guantanamo Bay detainees using his WikiLeaks website.

Court documents revealing Assange’s plea deal were filed Monday evening in the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean. Assange was expected to make an appearance in that court and to be sentenced to 62 months, with credit for time served in British prison, meaning he would be free to return to Australia, where he was born.

Let’s hope that the American political prisoners and those who’ve suffered the “Assange treatment” under the Biden regime find justice too—hopefully without succumbing to these orchestrated “conspiracy” plea deals. In the meantime, we’re thrilled that Julian will finally be heading home to his family. We wish him all the best.

As soon as the plea deal was signed, sealed, and delivered, Julian made a mad dash for freedom—and why not? It’s tragic that he had to admit to any crime at all. Ideally, the US government would show some humility and humanity by acknowledging their mistakes, but that’s wishful thinking these days. They’re fixated on securing that “guilty plea” and are ready to strong-arm and wear you down until you cave. But don’t fault Julian; he deserves his freedom and his family. The blame lies squarely with our corrupt regime.

The regime and their uniparty cronies are hell-bent on silencing anyone who dares speak the truth about government actions, our elections, and other dubious shenanigans. Just think—if Mike Pence got his way, the non-violent J6 political prisoners, who simply waltzed through the Capitol with their jolly police escorts, might very well be facing the death penalty. But Pence isn’t the only deep state “Mike” had it in for Julian Assange. Mike Pompeo, another uniparty heavyweight, is probably reeling over the idea of letting a truth-teller who targeted corrupt governments and politicians walk free.

After all, for the longest time, rumors have swirled that Pompeo even tried to assassinate Assange. He was summoned by a Spanish court to explain the alleged US government plot to murder Julian Assange.

Casual Flowers (Manga)

This one is like watching a soap drama where there's a lot of drama, and you might not like it, but you can't look away. Warning, this manga does contain stuff like cheating and does have sex scenes as well, so don't say I didn't warn you. It takes a while for the yandere to get in, so you have to see the various train wreck before you can get to the yandere. I have to say though, a very interesting story to have a yandere to get into and it's pretty different from other stuff I've read. Thanks to Cherry again for showing me this one. There are currently 34 chapters translated, and honestly I love how it's translated.

The story starts with Rino and her husband Ta's relationship, with Rino wanting to have a child with him, but he being more hesitant about it. At work Ta ends up hitting it off with a coworker named Saeki and eventually ends up cheating on his wife with her. Meanwhile, Rino seems to have a past that she hasn't told Ta, something that involves her parent's death. The two continue to keep secrets from each other until one of Ta's coworkers, Honami, and Rino's friend catches on. Rino gets a video of Ta and Saeki having sex. Rino and Honami meet up, with Honami spilling that Saeki is the one who is sleeping with Ta. Rino ends up meeting with Saeki about the cheating, but Saeki ends up revealing her past instead, stating that someone she knows has been released from jail recently. Meanwhile, Honami and her coworker Mikami start to date each other while she tries to get more information for Rino. Saeki ends up trapping Honami by revealing that she actually slept with Ta a long time ago, and threatens to reveal it to her new boyfriend if she doesn't become her double agent.

Rino ends up getting pregnant, happily telling Ta about their new baby, though Ta seems a bit apprehensive about it. This ends up with Ta trying to break it off with Saeki, though it doesn't last for long. Rino ends up seeing her ex, Naoki, the one who was released from jail not to long ago. Rino freaks out, as Naoki was the one who killed her parents. We get a flashback to how the two met, with the two getting to know each other and dating after working in the same restaurant together. The two ended up having a child together, and promise to marry each other. However, when Rino introduces him to her parents, they reject him intensely, and ended up killing them as a result. While Rino and Naoki talk, Naoki admits that he never stopped thinking about her while in jail. While Naoki seems a bit shocked that she's married, he presses her to meet up with each other once in a while. Saeki tries to force Honami into feeding Rino an abortion drug, however, in the end is not able to go through with it. This leads to Saeki shoving Rino down a staircase thus causing her to pass out and loser her baby. Rino ends up meeting with her mother-in-law who chews her out for losing the baby, believing that she had an abortion. This is enough to bring her over the edge and finally confront Ta about cheating with Rino and causes them to fight. Rino ends up meeting up with Naoki, revealing that she ended up abandoning the child she had together with him, which leads to the two sleeping together. Rino's mother-in-law gets a picture of Rino and Naoki together, going to threaten Rino about cheating on her son and tells them to divorce. Rino finally tells Ta about her past, and how she abandon her and Naoki's child, in which Ta puts two and two together and realizes that Saeki is the same age. Rino realizes that she's trying to get revenge on her because she abandoned her as a child leading to the two confronting her in the park. Saeki admits she is Rino's child and that she is getting revenge for abandoning her. At work, it's revealed to everyone that Ta is sleeping with Saeki (which somehow doesn't get them fired), with a picture that looks like she was being raped. Ta blames (?) this on Rino, leading to Rino sleeping with Naoki again afterwards.The two talk about what has been happening and this leads to Naoki trying to kill Saeki because she "ruined her life", however, Rino tells him that she will instead face the consequences and ask Saeki for forgiveness after truly apologizing. Rino goes to apologize to Saeki, but instead leads to Naoki kidnapping Saeki in front of her. Naoki blames Saeki for messing up Rino and his lives and stabs her, only for Rino to come in along with the police to arrest him. Saeki ends up surviving thanks to Rino, and Ta and Rino finally end up divorcing. Rino and Saeki end up moving in together as a way for the two to make up for lost time.

The two end up living together happily for some time until they find out that Naoki escaped from jail. The two end up meeting Naoki, who tries to get back together with Rino after finding out she's divorced, but she refuses. Naoki tells her to die with him, and when she refuses (as she's taking care of Saeki), Naoki attempts to kill Saeki again. Rino ends up protecting Saeki, leading to Naoki stabbing Saeki and getting arrested again. Rino ends up dying with Ta and Saeki hooking up a year later, and Saeki getting pregnant with his child. She ends up ditching him and naming her yet born child after Rino.

Like I said, really chaotic and like reading a really dramatic soap drama. There's a lot of leaps in logic, from not divorcing after finding out that Ta was cheating, and Naoki not killing Ta but instead Saeki (?) for ruining their lives, to the entire thing where Saeki has a child with Ta and names it after Rino? A really wild ride. A lot of things don't make any sense and kind of is placed there for drama, but at the same time, it doesn't annoy me, but rather adds to the whole absurdity of it. Like I said too, the translator's use of British slang to translate is actually probably what makes it even better, just to add to the chaoticness about it. It is super entertaining if you know not to take it too seriously.

A lot of this manga is kind of the result of miscommunication and one really really vengeful child, since Ta and Rino ever really talk to each other about the cheating or Rino's past at all, and even with Rino DOES find out, she thinks that having a baby with him will solve all of their problems. I dunno if it's because it's hard to divorce in Japan, but I feel like the two should at least talk about what is going on. Then they might have actually caught on earlier that Saeki is Rino's child, but then again all of that drama has to come from somewhere, right? Weirdly enough, I didn't even find that part annoying considering everything else that happens straight after.

Naoki... is kind of weird as a yandere. Normally you'd think if a yandere's love is already married, they'd try to kill the other party (in this case, kill Ta) but... he kind of doesn't. Even weirder still, he thinks that killing Saeki is more important, though I guess it kind of makes sense as she's ruining Rino's life. I mean I guess in the end, since Naoki already knew that Rino's married life was in turmoil, maybe he just kind of assumed that the two would just break up, and that they would be together again. Other than the weird plot point that he never really seems jealous of Ta, all of his other actions seem relatively in line with a yandere. He ends up killing Rino's parents for disrespecting him and not allowing them to marry and has been thinking of Rino the entire time that he's been in jail. He tries to kill Saeki again once he realizes that Rino won't be with him (and won't die together), though ends up killing Rino by accident. This dude gets arrested so many times it's insane that he hasn't figured out how to avoid the police. We don't know what will happen next considering he's still alive and in jail (at least, from what I assume) so it's possible that he might go after Ta or Saeki again for interfering with his love with Rino before dying himself. Or you know, maybe the entire thing will throw a curveball at me and have Ta and Naoki married, like honestly with this manga, it wouldn't even be that big of a stretch. As much as he is just kind of a violent guy, he's probably my favorite (?) character in all of this mess, since he stays loyal to Rino and at least tries to take Saeki's life before failing.

Weird manga, but actually not bad to read since it is pretty different than a lot of other things I normally recommend. I dunno if I would recommend it just for the yandere if you really hate cheating, plotholes and lack of communication, but if you're okay with just reading dumb things for the sake of dumb things, it is a very fun read.

The Sound of Eukatech Five by Nils Hess 2001 Techno / Tech-House

Decent and ephemeral techno and tech-house dispatch here from the London-based Eukatech label's Sound of Eukatech series that was released in 2001 and mixed by Nils Hess, who, before delivering this one, had also co-mixed the previous installment of this series with Richard Summerhayes, and had also done The Sound of Eukahouse for a Eukatech sublabel whose name you can probably guess as well.

Now, normally, when it comes to any comp or mix whose name begins with 'Sound of…,' I think it'd be safe to assume that what's on that release is going to be material from a single entity—in this case a label, namely, Eukatech. But that doesn't actually seem to be the case here. *Some* of the tracks that appear on this album are from the Eukatech catalog, but not nearly all of them. And I wouldn't necessarily call that deceptive or misleading, but if you're a newcomer to this series, it definitely might be a bit unexpected.

Anyway, props to Nils Hess himself for not only doing this mix, but also showing that he can hack it as a producer too, because among this tracklist that has some pretty notable turn-of-the-millennium European techno names on it, it's Hess, under his Reck moniker, who delivers one of its greatest gems in "Dragons Turning," which is remixed by Stigmata, a German duo that just so happened to take home the award for 'Best Producer' at the German Dance Awards for the same year that this mix was released. This is a song that takes some time to brew, but once you get a taste of its sweet, dinging hi-hats, it really finds some nice and steady footing 😌.

But a song on here that might be better than Nils Hess' own offering is the one that directly succeeds it: beloved Slovenian DJ and techno/tech-house god Umek's "Potential 11 B2." Umek has a career that dates back to the early 90s, but long before the term 'EDM' became widely adopted and Umek started racking up numerous accolades and high rankings among various publications and websites that specialized in EDM itself, he was churning out darkly nifty productions like this one, which sees a pairing-up of a panicked, plonking synth melody with some intermittently hard and banging hi-hats. And Nils Hess appears to be the only one who's ever laced a commercial mix with this bit of gold too.

So an overall solid and well-mixed set from the early 2000s here by the UK's Nils Hess. It's not an exceptional release that's going to totally blow you away by any means, but he definitely manages to pack some tasty techno goodies in here regardless 😋.

Aperçu of the Week:

Bad News of the Week:

"The long march of cultural Marxism through our institutions has come to pass. The federal government is a behemoth, weaponized against American citizens and conservative values, with freedom and liberty under siege as never before." Is this a statement of a lunatic holed up in the basement waiting for the social apocalypse? No, it comes from Kevin Roberts, President of the Heritage Foundation. And it is the foreword to "Mandate for Leadership" of the "Project 2025 - Presidential Transition Project" - in effect Donald Jessica Trump's government program.

The almost 900-page paper outlines a takeover of power that has probably never before been prepared in such detail and, above all, publicly. It is intended to be the blueprint for the actions of a new conservative government. Which will be quite radical. Of course, this is not official, but the personal intertwining of this party-political think tank, the institutional MAGA heads and Trump's slowly crystallizing shadow cabinet alone makes you sit up and take notice.

Here are just three examples that should make every upright Democrat angry: The USA should withdraw from the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund - because global elites contradict US sovereignty and only cost money unnecessarily. The "war on fossil fuels" should finally be ended - because these are "not an environmental problem, but the blood of the economic cycle". The country's external borders are to be "sealed", especially trade with China is to be stopped - because undermining the country's industrial base has to be stopped.

However, the core of "Project 2025" is the personnel policy. Project leader Paul Dans writes "Our goal is to create an army of tested, trained and prepared conservatives who will set about dismantling the administrative state from day one". And Dans is not just anyone: during Trump's first term in office, he was jointly responsible for personnel policy in the White House.

For Trump, the years in the White House were above all a story of betrayal, as he describes it today. By bureaucrats and RINOs ("Republican in name only") who refused to give him the unconditional allegiance he expected. This time he will purge all leadership positions in all institutions of members of the establishment and the Deep State. He has learned that he must also control the bureaucracy. And he will leave his mark on the USA for years to come.

With the arch-conservative dominance he has created in the Supreme Court, Trump himself has set the benchmark for this. He has also reorganized the EPA (Environment Protection Agency), pulled out of the nuclear deal with Iran, imposed punitive tariffs on China and Europe, withdrawn US troops from Syria, courted Vladimir Putin and left the Paris Climate Agreement.

Trump has achieved all of this against stubborn resistance. The "adults in the room", officials who remained in bureaucratic positions, prevented him from doing even more, such as leaving NATO or denying entry to Muslims across the border. He sees that as a mistake - one he would certainly not repeat. I don't like Nikki Haley. Neither programmatically nor personally. But she would be the lesser of two evils. After all, she doesn't want to lay the cornerstones of the Western community of values to waste. After all.

Good News of the Week:

There could be positive movement in the Gaza war. According to a report in the "New York Times", which cites US government circles, an agreement between Israel and Hamas could be imminent. According to the report, it's about the release of hostages and a ceasefire. Discussions on a corresponding draft were to begin in Paris on Sunday.

The draft had been drawn up by US negotiators on the basis of proposals from Israel and the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas. The two-stage deal envisages Hamas releasing more than 100 hostages in return for Israel ceasing its military operations in the Gaza Strip for around two months. This is linked to the hope that a lasting solution can be brokered in the meantime.

I take a critical view of the somewhat sparse composition of the consultations: in addition to the USA, which are chaired by CIA chief William Burns, only representatives of Israel, Egypt and Qatar are taking part. They are also only sending the second guard in terms of personnel. After all, Joe Biden would have discussed the talks with the heads of state of Egypt and Qatar in advance. And in the evening, Israel's first statement was that although there was a "considerable gap", the talks were constructive. So fingers crossed.

Perhaps this will happen just in time before the feared conflagration in the eternal Middle East conflict occurs. From the Houthi rebels to the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Iranian regime - which has just achieved a breakthrough in the development of missile technology - to Russia and China, many are just waiting for the USA to withdraw from the region even further than it did under Obama. And the way is clear to attack Israel as a "western bridgehead".

Personal happy moment of the week:

My 15-year-old son cooked. For the first time, not according to personal taste (although his lasagna is legendary) or a hot tip from a TikTok video. But according to a recipe. And it worked: when I got home, dinner was ready, the table was set, nothing had gone wrong and even the mess in the kitchen was kept within pleasant limits. Very nice. Please do this once a week now. Thank you.

...that there will soon no longer be a shortage of teachers at German elementary school. Because if you take a closer look at this Bertelsmann study, you will learn why: the coming low-birth cohorts will simply need fewer teachers. Great solution, you incompetent education policy!

It's fine with me...

...that the French capital is fighting back against the farmers' protests. I live in a farming village myself and have the greatest respect for this profession. Nevertheless, I lack a little understanding for their unwillingness to move a little in the face of changing conditions too. When I look at the budget distribution in the EU (I don't know the French budget), there is no group that is subsidized more. If whoever, wherever, whenever starts to introduce real costs, I will be there enthusiastically - because that is the real problem.

As I write this...

...I am driving home from an annual company event in Baden-Württemberg. Where employees from different locations meet, who otherwise usually only know each other by phone or from online meetings. This time, too, there was an interesting exchange, excellent food and a good mood. It was just a shame that I had to miss a friend's 50th birthday, which was taking place at the same time. One negative highlight of the evening was completely unexpected: an armed hostage situation occurred a few houses away from us, but it ended well. It was probably just random luck that the perpetrator hadn't chosen the location we were in. Phew...

Post Scriptum

At the European Party Conference, the Social Democratic SPD sent its lead candidate Katarina Barley into the upcoming elections with a tailwind. The Vice-President of the European Parliament received 98.7% of the vote and a fairly clear program for Europe and against the right. What is astonishing is the prominent role that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to play in the election campaign, as his poll ratings are in the basement. The argument in his favor is simple - and true: he has proven himself to be a convinced European and achieved quite something in the two years of his government so far. I hope that the European elections will focus precisely on this. And that it is not misused as a wave of protest against the traffic light coalition. Because Germany needs Europe at least as much as Europe needs Germany.

Pretty good article. Summary: despite the plethora of video surveillance available the Jan 6 inquisition relied on testimony of two capital hill police officers. This video proved one of those officers wasn’t even in the building.
