Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

is commonly associated with war veterans or just people who have gone through war. Though this is true, it has led a lot of people in the general public to believe that that is the only source of PTSD. 

PTSD develops from witnessing or being a part of a traumatic event. 

As said by the National Institute of Mental Health… 

“A traumatic event is a shocking, scary, or dangerous experience that can affect someone emotionally and physically.” (x)

Examples: (not limited to) • Natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes)  • Acts of violence (assault, abuse, terror attacks, mass shootings)   • Near-death experiences or situations of severe terror (car crashes) 

The diagnostic criteria by the DSM-5 differ for adults, adolescents, children over 6 years old, and children under 6 years. I will be listing the criteria that apply to all the groups I just previously listed. Due to criteria being quite lengthy I will be summarizing it so please keep that in mind that the diagnostic process for PTSD is more nuanced than how I am describing. 

Summarized Diagnostic Criteria: 

Exposure to the traumatic event

Re-living the traumatic event 

Avoiding situations that are related to the traumatic event

Having your cognition and emotions being negatively affected or worsened 

Trauma-related responses (can be new or worsened) 

Symptoms last for over a month

Symptoms create distress and/or functional impairment (social, occupational, executive functioning, etc.) 

Symptoms are not caused by substances or another medical condition 

Has one of the following dissociative symptoms: 

Depersonalization (feeling detached from your mind/body) 

Derealization (experiences of unreality of surroundings) 

To further explain PTSD I will be using Sunny from the video game Omori as an example of this disorder! There will be spoilers for Omori so I will have the rest of this post be under the cut

How Sunny fits the diagnostic criteria for PTSD: 

(1) Sunny was directly exposed to the death of his sister Mari when he was twelve. He pushed her down their house stairs and watched her die right before his own eyes. The process of then staging her death––with the help of Basil––as a suicide was also traumatic. 

(2) Sunny is reminded of Mari's death frequently throughout Black Space and even White Space. You spend quite a good chunk of the game going through references to Mari’s death and even re-living certain scenarios related to her death in Sunny’s dream world. 

(3) After Mari’s death, Sunny shuts himself in his house for approximately 4 years as the outside world that he used to share with Mari would remind him of her absence. He also hides from his friends, especially Basil. 

(4) During the final fight between Omori and Sunny, Omori continuously blames Sunny for Mari’s death. This altercation represents Sunny’s exaggerated beliefs about the traumatic situation and how he blames himself. 

(5) Sunny experiences sleep disturbances from his dreams/nightmares in headspace. In an ending of the game he commits suicide, being a self-destructive behavior. 

(6) Sunny shut himself in his house for 4 years, being well over one month. Sure we don’t see everything that happened for the past 4 years since Mari’s death, but the fact that he is still experiencing PTSD symptoms years after the event shows that the trauma greatly affected him. 

(7) Also because he shut himself in his house, he had no social life and most likely didn’t go to school as well. 

(8) Sunny doesn’t take any substances in the game and there is no lore that supports that. He also did not have a pre-existing condition. 

(9) One can come to the assumption that with the persona of Omori, Sunny experiences depersonalization.

Ok so I just had a mini dose of closure so I'll just give the quick outline to what I thought in my imagination

tws: guilt, self blaming, literally just the story of OMORI, perfectionism, PTSD implied, mental issues, moving away, long-distance friendship, kinda unstable friendship

He looks around, still unsure of how he's gonna get out.

Progress

Hero opens up his eyes.. He's still in the Dark Part of His Mind.

Something catches his eye, he turns to it.

It looks like his younger self.

He's surrounded by,.. well.. all the difficult stuff he had in his life.

He's on his knees, looking down, and clutching the sides of his head. His jaw is clenched.

"Oh.." Hero thinks to himself. He sometimes forgot that he dealt with that much back then.

*cut to 15yoHero venting about literally everything*

Younger Hero had his forehead on the ground now, he was breathing as if he hadn't in an hour, he was shaking.

"......And I just... didn’t do anything." He said, his voice wet with tears. "I didnt fix it." "and... and I hurt everyone."

Hero was silent. What was he supposed to say? He couldn't think of the perfect advice to give to his younger self. He knew it existed, but he just somehow couldn't find it.

He thought, hard. It took him a while but eventually, it hit him. It didn’t exist. There was no fix-everything-at-once solution for this.

Just like everything in life.

No amount of inspiration could get Sunny to make the perfect drawing in one moment,

No amount of motivation could get Aubrey to do a ballet dance perfectlyin one try,

No amount of skill could get Kel to make every shot in one game,

No amount of knowledge could ensure Basil wouldnt run into any issues while growing a flower,

No amount of determination could let Mari perfect a peice and hit every note perfectly

And no one peice of advice could fix everything at once.

It takes a bunch of imperfect pieces to fix something.

Maybe it takes multiple flawed people to make each other happy

And not just one perfect one

This wasn't gonna be perfect, but perfect was impossible anyway, so this is all he could do.

He knelt down to his younger self.

His Younger self looked up at him.

Still, from this angle, he looked so small.

"...Hero, you were a child then."

Younger Hero's eyes widened.

"You cant send yourself to the guillotine for being a child and not responding to a horrible situation perfectly."

Younger Hero said nothing. He just stared into his older self's eyes, with a look of slight bewilderment.

"..........I need to talk to someone." Older Hero said.

-cut to next scene-

Sunny walked through the door to his room and closed it behind him. He tossed his bag off to the side. He took off his jacket and put it on the hanger.

Just then, his phone started ringing.

This scared him.

He didn't know why he did it, but he looked at who it was from.

It was Hero.

Oh no.

Why was Hero of all people calling? What would he say if he picked up?... Sunny quickly blocked out that thought.

What does Sunny have to lose if Hero screams at him and tells him to kill himself? He didn't know how Hero felt about The Truth, but it, of course, wouldn't be good.

Anways, what does he have to lose?

Well ever since he moved, he made a new group of friends.

Well he wouldn't really say him and them were close friends, and he only joined a week ago, but.. he knew that if something happened, they would be there to support him.

Okay

He was gonna do it

He picked up the receiver.

"Hello? Is this Sunny?" Hero asked.

"...Yes." Sunny awnsered.

...How was Hero supposed to start this

"This is Hero!" (What the fuck was that)

"I know..." Sunny responded

"How have you been?" Hero asked

Despite the awkwardness, Sunny tried to focus on the good- Oh my gosh-

The way Hero's talking? Right now? That means he doesn't hate Sunny, he doesn't hate him

..And the status quo of Hero being the one Sunny could be near when he was going through troubles came back to him.

"...I mean not good, but, it's way better." Sunny awnsered.

"Oh, well that's-" Hero almost said "good" "...better." Hero finished with a sort of chuckle.

"..."

"..."

"I,,- If you don't want to talk about it, I completely understand.. I wanted to talk about,, the last time we saw each other."

"..."

"N-No,, I don't want to." Sunny said, his hands holding the receiver sort of shaking.

"It's okay, I understand."

"..."

"So, uh,, just checking in.."

"Yeah.."

"Thank you.. for that"

Hero was suprised

"Of course."

"..."

"..."

"Do you want to talk another time?"

"Yes." He said it with 100% certainty

"Tomorrow?"

"...Next week."

Ive always kinda said that I'm a lot like mirabelle, and i am we act a lot alike, but I also feel i understand Siffrin in a way that goes beyond a reader perspective. I think part of the reason i not only relate, but love and understand Siffrin as a character is the way he processes trauma and his feelings around what hurts them. I'm obviously not a psychiatrist, nor am i waving my hand and saying 'Hey hey this fella has THIS i am DIAGNOSING' I'm more just kind of ranting about a character stuck in my brain a lot (along with Basil from omori, i could write about them forever). However i am throwing around a few terms just because that is MY own take on him. consider this a little disclaimer

Obviously, post canon is post canon for a reason WE KNOW NOTHING OFFICIAL ABOUT IT but. I feel as though i can imagine Post Canon Siffrin struggling with PTSD. And i know that's a term that kinda gets thrown around when a character goes through something traumatic, but i mean genuine Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Not every major trauma causes it, but i strongly see Sif developing it post loops. Especially in one aspect. I know a lot of Post Canon Fics, especially Siffrin centric ones, tackle the idea of them having flashbacks or confusion, believing they're back in the loops and reciting the usual script again, and to me that makes sense. i agree. But something i think about a lot is Sif's take on his trauma.

There is no typical reaction or response to your trauma, and there is no set way to describe it, but i believe Siffrin to refer to his life surrounding his trauma as 'Before the loops' and 'After the loops'. This isn't a typical time travel game. LIFE DOESN'T JUST MOVE ON. Frin has experienced a trauma so catastrophic he now refers to things happening before or after the event. THE event. We can already see this happening ingame, when Siffrin Questions if he acted certain ways before the loops, When Mira asks him if they remember last week, the question about them enjoying the journey, Siffrin's inner dialouge says *You don't.*

Which, yeah, they've been in the loops for A WHILE. it makes sense they don't remember, I'm completely acknowledging that, but i think this could also be taken in a, the loops are siffrins whole life, way. its not just a 'wow time has passed and nobody else knows hahahha' moment its also a 'i have forgotten this thing because this event that is currently happening to me is taking up all my thoughts and energy'

Which thats all pretty obvious, right? My point of that is to say that i don't think that would just END after the loops. I don't think Siffrin would recover well at all. I think they'd have Ptsd for even years to come. Their life has literally been altered, yet again. You don't move on from that easy.

i was going to go all in depth about the way they respond to the idea of the loops and also how the north island trauma feeds into the fear of being forgotten but GOD knows ive been writing long enough

Disguise

A friend of mine dove into OMORI recently, so I felt like making some sketches

This is such a weird moment in the game imo... Like, 4 kids of age 11-15 killed a bunch of Headspace habitants, made masks of their flesh and skind and stole their tickets to their Idol's concert. Then they broke into that world's Idol house and disrupted her wedding....

it's just a game about overcoming the PTSD, uh-huh

Currently replaying OMORI because I'm a masochist with my best friends @beevean and @the-crow-binary providing emotional support lmfao. Even despite how soul-crushingly boring it is, I think we're still having some sort of fun with this clusterfuck of a game

Highlights (and the misc. problems we've managed to spot) so far include:

I already knew that this game's length was detrimental to it during my first solo playthrough, but this playthrough is helping me put into perspective just how bloated OMORI is, even when it comes to an aspect like dialogue. For example, a single conversation between Space Boyfriend and the main cast took us approximately 5 minutes to get through, and it's not like the writing is gripping enough to make us give a shit about the characters or anything they're saying

Speaking of the dialogue, you can just see how hard it tries to be witty and Quirky™ the way Earthbound and indie RPGs like Undertale were. Needless to say, it fails horribly, and the end result of that was me having to fast-track some conversations because they were unfunny and weren't relevant at all

I got unintentionally (!) stuck in White Space for 15-20 minutes because I couldn't find the map the game needed me to find to let me open the door. Beev came to hate the repetitive 8-bit BGM the area had by the time I finally found the map lol. game_design.exe

Headspace's music is so ear-gratingly abysmal oh my god. I can only call it "dollar-store Kirby music" because that's the most appropriate description that comes to mind and I'm pretty sure Lost at a Sleepover gave Beev severe PTSD. Of course, the music of Faraway Town isn't any better: the "track" that plays in the first fight with Aubrey is less music than it is the result of an .exe file being put through an audio player. Sonic Chronicles might have some serious competition in the "worst video game soundtrack" category asdfghjkl

The plot of the Faraway Town segments is so cookie-cutter that it genuinely hurts to sit through. Character writing (or the lack thereof) aside, Sunny and Kel spend half a day loitering around the town and asking Aubrey's cronies where she is even though Kel could've easily gotten that information from Mikhael had he just indulged the latter's delusions of grandeur a little bit

Faraway Town's daytime sky is literally a scrolling JPEG of a cloudy sky. The battle backgrounds of the real world segments are edited JPEGs as well. Everyone's houses look exactly the same on the outside save for some of them being a different color. The developers spent six years and more than $200,000 on this game.

Sunny's fights against his fears are boring. You just need to wait until a particular turn when the game grants you a special skill you use to end the fight immediately. What was the point of designing these hallucinatory monsters if the player doesn't get to fight them at any point during the main route?

Aubrey (ostensibly) swinging a nail bat at Sunny is not treated with the same degree of realism as Sunny slashing her with a knife. Additionally, Aubrey rides away on her scooter just fine even though she's supposed to be bleeding

Mari's picnic baskets are inexplicably scattered all across the town and fulfill the exact same function as they do in Headspace. So much for realism!

I won two of the fights against Aubrey's goons even though I was trying to lose. gameplay.exe

Sunny is even more unpleasant than I remember. He doesn't respond to Basil - who is supposedly his best friend - when the latter talks to him, stays silent while (and after) Kel vents to him about Hero yelling at him and barges into the church despite Kel advising him to wait until the sermon ends. Why should I feel bad for him again?

Kel generally seems to treat Sunny like an actual baby, spelling out incredibly obvious things to the latter (e.g. that Sunny shouldn't be carrying a knife or walking in the road because it's dangerous) and making all of Sunny's decisions for him, to the point of not allowing Sunny to return into his own house until nighttime under the pretense of "there's so much to do! it's a brand new day!"

Finally, the "fight" against Sunny's fear of spiders comes completely out of nowhere since nothing triggered said fear during Sunny's adventures outside

Peak game, everyone.

And it's going to get way worse down the line!
