When Father breaks the news about the Jedi to Hera, she just stares up at him in bewilderment, then runs into her room and slams the door.

She doesn't come out for hours, and when she does, her eyes are dry---she hasn't cried. At dinner, she numbly remarks that they'll have to buy her something in white, because she's in mourning now.

From that day on, she wears no other color.

Hera never sheds a tear. She can't. Not with the Empire watching. But she wears white, and hears the people around her ask each other who Cham Syndulla's daughter is in mourning for--and sometimes, she hears other people answer.

It was her soulmate, I think. I hear he was a Jedi.

She wears white long past the time of mourning has ended. She wears it defiantly at dinner parties with Imperial Admirals. She wears it when she works on her mechanic projects and when she takes flying lessons and when she graduates at the top of her class. She wears it when her family goes on the run, and then she starts talking about him.

Caleb had eyes like the clearest sea, she says abruptly, one time, when some of her peers are gathered together chatting about their soulmates and she's sitting on the edge of the group, staring solemnly at nothing.

Caleb used to call me his little sister, she laughs in tragic commiseration, when her best friend is bemoaning his soulmate's habit of referring to him as her brother-from-another-mother. He didn't know I wanted him to marry me someday.

Hera talks about him freely. She tells how they met. She tells how they talked late into the night on comm calls until her parents started confiscating her commlink overnight. But she doesn't talk about her soulmark. Few people know where it once was, and no one has seen the place it used to be.

She wears long sleeves and keeps her right shoulder covered constantly, hiding the smooth skin that bore a three-pronged mark. She has to. If she doesn't, people will realize that she has been lying to the whole galaxy since she was nine years old.

Hera wears white because she wants everyone else to believe she's mourning her dead soulmate.

But the truth is, she doesn't mourn for Caleb.

She can't mourn for Caleb.

Her soulmark is still there.

Caleb isn't dead.

Thinking about Montague's hotel, the Grand Glacier. It's so preeetttyyyyyy. i'm almost always landing there when I play BR,,,

Can you imagine an alternative universe where Montague and Midas grow old together and they own the hotel ??

Like, they're the lovely old couple that owns a luxurious hotel (the papers have Montague's name, but since Midas is his husband, he's the co-owner now) !!! people don't know about it now 'cause of the years that have passed, but on their prime years they both were an absolute menace and cooked evil plans on there. but now they're old and retired, you can see Montague having breakfast and greeting the guests mindlessly while Midas sits down on their usual table, kisses Montague's forehead and gives him his usual coffee. Montague would slice his pain au chocolat in half and offer it to Midas, who instead of taking it would take a bite while Montague holds the pastry. Montague might look annoyed and say something like

"it's your fault my hair is greying now, i can't with you."

but Midas would smile a little bit and respond something like

"But you look really good with grey hair."

Montague would take a sip of his coffee to break eye contact and whisper. "You too. You're lucky you're aging really well. Comme un bon vin." [Like fine wine.] they're both disgustingly sweet. <3

They reminisce about the chaos they caused together on the island: raids, killing enemies, stealing data, evil masterplans. the usual romantic stuff. They sit and think about it on one of the benches in the hotel's garden. And they just love each other so much: when they aren't together they definitely glance at their diamond&gold matching rings. definitely. methinks.

They're also still kind of cold towards others and ppl don't know how they got together, but only they & ppl who are close to them know how well they fit together...

Aaaaand... they might be the kind of grandparents that will give money and candy to their grandchildren when the parents aren't looking. bonus points if its Midas sneaking a couple of golden coins to Jules' kids (Nitroengineering!!!)

Hehe ty Ari, I had to think on this for a bit cause I don't tend to do modern AUs, but I think what I came up w is pretty fun and silly. As you can probably tell, I like forcing them to be in situations. This is very personal to me, but I love to imagine them as foreign language professors in a relatively small department. Fundamentally they should get along, as they have very similar backgrounds, but they have to fight for resources, so they despise each other…yet feel an inexplicable pull to each other and can’t stop bumping into each other. Anytime one of their students references even just the other’s courses, they just can’t help themselves from making some petty comment, like: “Oh you’re going on an abroad trip? But it’s with Dr. Vettel? That trip sounds cool, but I wouldn’t want to be stuck with him that long.” “Spanish? Oh yeah I wouldn’t take any classes with Dr. Alonso, I’ve heard he’s a pretty ruthless grader.” But on one fateful day, the department head decides that as a bonding activity, they will have to accompany the French professor on a multilingual abroad trip as additional guides. Oh no, their planes seats are next to each other, uh oh the hostel messed up and now they have a joint room, uh oh! Is it soulmates if they’re constantly forced by outside forces to constantly be around each other? They don’t have a lot of obligations as they’re mainly just in France, so they have a lot of free time and don’t want to be alone, so they begrudgingly hang out. And now that they’re away from the hypercompetitive environment, it’s just them walking around on the quaint French town like “omg you like [blank] too??” And then in a couple semesters after the trip, they run a joint linguistics history class, and finish each others sentences and grade papers together, and everyone wishes they'd go back to pretending to hating each other. The petty remarks were more palatable than having to watch them practically commit HR violations in front of a class of innocent students bystanders

As if thinking of him has summoned him, Merrin hears his footsteps behind her. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees him sit down slowly on the rocky ledge, careful of his remaining injuries and the sheer drop in front of them. He puts himself a distance from her. If he was a Nightbrother, she would know it was out of respect. But Cal Kestis is not a Nightbrother. He is a Jedi.

“You don’t want me here, do you?” Cal Kestis asks. His voice cracks with disappointment.

She sighs.

It is easy to enjoy his company. But on a planet where it feels like every Nightsister she looked up to is watching her in silent judgment, it is very difficult to show how she feels.

Since she does not speak, he goes on. “I didn’t mean to barge into your home when I decided to come to Dathomir. I just… wanted to meet you. And, I know I’m probably not what you were hoping for. You’re a Nightsister, and—and I’m a Jedi. I get it if you don’t want me around.”

Merrin inhales, and he stops speaking, waiting for her to talk.

“Nightsisters and Jedi do not make their homes together,” she says, nodding slowly, still staring off towards the setting sun.

She knows Cal Kestis is watching her, so she turns her head and looks at him. The hot wind flicks her hair into her eyes. She brushes it back, and then she smiles at him.
