read a thing which was very good but I really had to suspend my disbelief when a 30 yo character traveled back in time, met his 17 yo self, and it was a plot point that they didn't recognize each other immediately and that 30 yo needed it pointed out it him and and later the 17 yo had to be convinced after they'd been traveling together for DAYS and

I'm so sorry but you at 17 and you at 30 look basically the same. That's still your face and it'll take a little more than a bit of fat redistribution and crows feet to change that
