She stops still as she catches sight of him. The bad feeling she’d suddenly gotten had been right…

She drops to her knees beside him, hands shaking as they reach out to uselessly check for a pulse. She tries in a few places, his wrist, his throat, she even tries to listen to his chest, and… nothing. Of course there’s nothing.

She already knew that.

Everything feels numb, her tether to anything tangible severed once more.

She reaches over to close his eyes, letting her hand rest on his cheek for just a moment, a thumb brushing away a fleck of dirt.

So many things she wished they could have talked about, things she should have said. Always so many regrets. She wouldn’t ever see him again, she doubted he’d be back this time.

The thought makes her chest burn, a searing pain branding itself over her already battered soul.

Duty takes over in the next few moments, as she performs the rites for the dead, trying to ignore her heart breaking all over again as she readjusts the body so that he might be sleeping. She presses a soft kiss to his temple, bidding him a safe journey to Aaru once more.

It’s only once everything is done that she lets herself break, moving away from him. She doesn’t think he’d really want her mourning over him. But there isn’t really much he can do about it now, is there?

She curls up and lets the tears fall, sobbing until there is nothing left to shed, no sound left in her throat, but the soft rasps of air as she continues to shake.

There is nothing left. Nothing left but to stand guard and protect his body once more.

This wasn't Aaru.

Of course he knew he wasn't going to Aaru. The green light, the blade struck through him. Put two and two together and it was obvious where he truly was. But of course no one would know that, save for those who possessed such magic, or perhaps those who'd touch it.

Opening his eyes, Atem found himself in a dark, cold, empty, void. Reaching out, he found himself trapped inside a dimly lit orb... apparently alongside other lit orbs, all seemingly traveling to the same far off destination. He looked ahead, bracing himself when he saw the giant eye in front of him.

The Leviathan.

"No... this can't be... he..." Atem whispered out as he began to process what was going on... before he noticed faint lights seemingly enveloping different parts of his body. He'd bring a hand to each of the light's destinations, a look of confusion in his face: first to his wrist, then his neck, and then his chest.

"What is..." He began to whisper as for some reason he felt his heart sink each time the light seemed to touch him. It felt... hollow but numb, painful but... held back. Such emotion was unknown to himself, and yet he could say for certainty that these feelings weren't his.

Another touch to his eyes, then his cheek. Another brush of emotions that felt barely pushed back. Tears that were this close to spilling out, cries that choked right at his throat. He could feel them, but they also felt pushed down. All it needed was that one push...

The light enveloped his body for a brief moment, a feeling of emptiness and... dare he say... duty?... before he could hear faint whispers and... a gentle caress of light to his temple, the side of his head.

There it was.

It was a gentle brush of light, but for some reason he felt his heart break. And as soon as it was felt it disappeared, but it was enough. It was more than enough. That brief but painful brush to his temple was felt, and he couldn't help but curl up and just...

Those weren't his feelings... but he felt them. He could feel it all, and as soon as it happened it was gone.

He just wanted to go home. He wanted out of this purgatory. He wanted to just stop... hurting.

So. Danny might have accidentally become a bit of a cryptid. He didn’t mean to, but he’d become a bit nocturnal- like many an Amity Parker- and it wasn’t his fault that he couldn’t be bothered to make sound when he was tired. Or pretend to breathe or, okay, he could see why he kept freaking people out at the grocery store he kept going to. 

But it wasn’t his fault! He has to get food too! And really is it anyone else’s business? Seriously he thought that people wouldn’t be so surprised with how much magic is everywhere. Like you’d think they’d never seen someone who wasn’t fully human before or something. 

Oh great, there’s a journalist at the grocery store now- he’s going to ignore that and finish his shopping and then continue his online work. Ooh, and eat icecream. He deserves it for potentially putting up with this. 

Oh, it’s a little baby reporter, first couple of article thing. Adorable.

As far as the world is concerned, Lu Ten II doesn't exist and the Royal Bloodline ends with Princess Azula. The little kid that follows Prince Zuko everywhere? That's Ten Ten, an orphaned stowaway his Crew found and adopted for some weird reason no-one ever questions—the kid is just that lovable.

(It helps, honestly, that Lu Ten II is a carbon-copy of poor, forgotten Ursa. No one would ever think to connect him with Fire Lord Ozai, long may he reign.)

Little Ten Ten loves to run off when the Crew is on shore leave. He gets into trouble sometimes, but only because of his chronic inability to look away from people who need help (it makes Zuzu both so proud and so shouty-because-he's-worried. It's fun until it isn't).

By now the Crew knows not to panic when the kid goes missing for a couple of hours in a harbor town—which is why no one noticed Ten Ten's disappearance until it was too late.

"Could someone please explain to me," what starts as a mutter becomes a shout as anxiety takes over Sokka, "why on earth did we go into town to buy necessary, highly specific supplies, and returned—not only with a stolen waterbending scroll—stolen! From pirates, Katara!—but with a Fire Nation-looking KID?!"

While Ten Ten is having the time of his life goofing with Aang, out-sassing why-is-this-happening-to-me Sokka, and melting Katara's heart—Zuko is losing his mind, sanity, and temper because how on Agni's name do you lose a Prince of your nation?

But, sir, he's like three-feet-tall—

Needless to say, the pirates kidnap the pretty waterbending thief and her kid with the sharp tongue and fancy-looking clothes. Which turns out to be a Bad Idea™ because, well, a skinny guy from the watertribes and his way-too-young-to-be-bald companion? They can absolutely deal with them.

A Crew's worth of murderous Fire Nation soldiers lead by the unforgiving, terrifying, bloodthirsty Prince?

They are not ready for that.

Book Fiyero: *immediately recognizes Elphaba and stations himself at the backdoor to prevent her from evading him, stalks her halfway across town to her aerie (even though at that point in time she was only a college friend he hadn’t seen in five years), insists on seeing her again, instinctively goes to comfort her when she first cries, gets sucked into increasingly deep and fraught conversations with her about collateral damage and freedom fighter terrorism, calls her the “most individual, the most separate, the most real” DURING AN ARGUMENT, says he adores Elphaba’s looks IN THAT SAME ARGUMENT, doesn’t understand Elphaba’s “being born with a talent or an inclination for goodness is the aberration” comment because (implied) he sincerely believes Elphaba isn’t evil, changes his mind about the plight of the Animals all by himself but doesn’t mention it to Elphaba because he is afraid she would distance himself from him, buys scarves for both his wife and Elphaba even though only Elphaba likes scarves, is so concerned for Elphaba and her dangerous Lurlinemas Eve mission that he stalks her instead of staying at his club or just leaving town altogether, and is so worried about her that he returns to the aerie just to see her*
