On Octavian ruining Percy's panda pillow pet...

Now, I thought this wasn't even a serious thing that needs to be addressed but I just finished arguing with someone over this, so apparently it does need its own meta.

So, the take we're debunking today is "Octavian is mean/evil for ruining Percy's pillow pet".

The thing about this pillow pet is that Percy was homeless for six months, he had to steal to survive and fight off monsters every single day, a task that was getting harder and harder every day, all while he remembered nothing. He only had his name. He didn't have friends, a home, a family, a safe place, a purpose, something that can get people by so that they don't just give up when struggling every day for no known reason with no known end goal gets too much.

During those months, his panda pillow was the one single form of comfort and familiarity he was granted. A small mercy if you will, to help get him through this. Although many people downgrade, poke fun off, and affectionately ridicule his relationship with the panda pillow pet, it was definitely something meaningful. Like the first participation trophy you got for participating in a competition for fun, only to realize you really like that activity and get hooked on it. Sure, the trophy does not indicate any real talent or success in itself, but to you it's the starting line for something you genuinely love. And to Percy his pillow pet has value because of it's emotional worth.

Which is why it had to be sacrificed.

I'll explain why soon enough, but for now, hold that thought I put in your head just now while I add a second idea there too.

This isn't talked about in the books, but it's something Uncle Rick made sure to address in the show. As Chris Rodriguez worded it: The gods love the smell of beging.

In Camp Half-Blood, when meal time is over, demigods throw the remaining of their food into the fire as a sacrifice and pray to the gods. In the show it was specified that it's better to sacrifice a portion of your favourite food, because if the gods see that you're willing to sacrifice your own comfort (even if it's just in the form of your favourite food) just to please them, they are more likely to answer your prayer. Once again, as Chris said, they love the smell of begging. And the more you beg, the more you're willing to sacrifice, the further you're willing to go, the better.

So Greek gods like it when you pray by sacrificing your food, and to an extent, your comfort. And the Roman gods like it when you sacrifice a life.

Which is why auguries became a thing. Of course you're not gonna see the future in the guts of an animal just because. The gods will grant you spoilers for the next season if you kill the animal because it will make them feel flattered to see that you're so desperate for their help that you'd rip out the soul of a living being in their honor just to get their attention.

However, Rick is writing books for tweens and teens. He can't just have animals being slaughtered left and right, especially for the purpose of feeding the gods' narcissism. So what can he do to make the situation a bit more pg 13? Remove the slaughtering of animals. And how will auguries be performed then? By sacrificing something else that has value. Emotional value.

It's quite logical to assume that the stuffed toys Octavian uses in his auguries are really expensive or collector's edition or handmade or are someone's childhood companion that they donated. The gods wouldn't just let you have information about the feature when all you gave to them was a sacrifice worth 1$ that you could even fish out of the trash.

Now I want you to hold on to that too and knit it together with the other thought I told you to hold on to, got it? And if you do that part of the process properly you should get to the conclusion that the best sacrifice available at the moment to get the gods to tell you how they feel about Percy joined the legion was Percy's panda pillow pet that he is so deeply emotionally connected to.

Octavian did not ruin something Percy loved for kicks. He didn't even know him yet, there's no way he had any type of malicious feelings towards Percy yet. He was just doing his job. The job Reyna tasked him to and the job Hazel told him to do during their conversation. And that was to read Percy's augury (which wasn't an augury bc Octavian is a haruspex but that's irrelevant right now). He wasn't actively trying to soil Percy's mood and ruin his day just to be the evil villain. He was just doing his job.

Thus proven.

Percy has such little wolf energy, but the particular of using that term had me immediately go Roman and damn if Octavian doesn't have the taunting angle of this song covered, but not the fighting angle and the song, on the fight part, gives me such Luke-Percy PJO-saga enemies stage energy and now I'm just rotating some scenario where Percy faces off against Luke and Octavian, as a united front.

IDK why but- Modern AU. h History nerds Luke Castellan and Oliver Simmons (most call him by his nickname Octavian tho). With Luke focusing on revolutions and Octavian on the Roman Empire, both locked in a constant conflict of whose topic is the more interesting one with the other.

I love them and you’re Well aware of this.

Personally, I think they’d work out very well. Neither of them would have more power than the other, so I even think their relationship would be quite healthy.

They’d definitely keep it a secret. They both hold positions of political power, with Jason as the Praetor and a Centurion before that and Octavian being the Head Augur and Centurion of the First Cohort. It just wouldn’t be smart to have their relationship out in the open like that. I doubt they’d even tell Reyna, Octavian is shown to be quite paranoid.

While we see Octavian practicing haruspicy most often in the books (because Rick... is Rick), I personally feel that due to his connection with Jason, Octavian would be quite good at auspicia ex caleo, which involve divination using the weather. Thunder and lightning in particular.

Jason used this to his advantage multiple times, causing thunder and lightning to prevent the Senate from having meetings, as was customary, so that he could spend more time with Octavian.

While they kept their relationship a secret and Octavian was rather calculated in his actions, I feel Jason has great potential to be reckless in his private life... they’re both horny teenagers, is all I’m saying. And the Senate wouldn’t be the weirdest place two teenagers have made out.

As they approach when Jason will be stolen from him, Octavian gets more and more skittish and on edge. He isn’t sure what will happen, something is actively blocking him from looking at Jason’s future. Jason isn’t concerned about it, but vows to be careful.

They act like they hate each other sometimes in public. It isn’t that they do, but they argue often because they have differing opinions.

Reyna never tells him she feels something about Jason, but Octavian isn’t blind.

Jason doesn’t meet him for dinner one day and his world turns cold.

He looks composed on the outside, but inside he is full of burning rage and icy sorrow. He now knows why he couldn’t see Jason’s future.

His relationship to Reyna sorrows. She was the last person to see him.He thinks she killed him.

Percy Jackson comes to camp. He’s a Greek. He’s sent to free Death.

Octavian’s loyalty is to Rome above all, but a small, selfish part of him wonders if they leave Death chained would his Jason return to him? Just as Hazel returned to Earth.

Octavian and Jason don’t get a chance to talk when he comes back to Camp Jupiter, but he knows Jason lost his memories and he sees the way that daughter of Venus looks at him.

Look I just have a lot of feelings.

Can we pretty please talk about how no matter which character's pov it is, the first time we see them meet Octavian he's always described as tall. Percy described Jason (6'0) as a couple of inces taller than himself, but for Octavian he didn't bother making a comparison, he just said "Tall" so now I'm imagining Octavian to be Tall tall. Taller than everyone. Like, almost 7'0 tall, of not exactly 7'0. Like.

But also he's tall and skinny and weird.

And Jason is kinda upset that Octavian is taller than him and he tries to make himself look taller when standing beside Octavian and they end up fighting about it kinda toddlers.

Reyna is the only adult person here and she told me to tell you to send help.

You've written fics of Octavian getting an apprentice that he becomes a father figure to, sometimes with Percy as his significant other. Have you thought of writing a fic where Percy gets to meet a person from Octavian's past, the former augur and the one who looked after Octavian when he first arrived in camp Jupiter? They could have s parental bond as well, since in your fics Octavian's parents suck.

Mh, that's a very interesting question, actually. While I've never put full thought into Octavian's mentor, in the back of my mind I suppose I always pictured him dead by the time the books roll around, that's why Octavian - so young himself still - is already augur. Because I am just generally against the idea that all these important rolls are naturally filled by children, in a city that does have adults.

So Octavian becoming augur was something that happened out of necessity when his mentor passed away. But I do think that he was a great influence on Octavian, and a parental one too in a way, considering that yeah, Tavy's family suuucks in my interpretation.

octavians most popular fanon surname is ‘Simmons’

That's like one person who just wrote a ton of stuff. As far as I'm aware. And I'll say it out right - I dislike the name.

Simmons is too "normal" because in canon Jake Mason heard Octavian's name but didn't remember it, so he just said "Octavian What's-His-Name" instead.

If it was just "Simmons" he'd probably remember it. And have said something like "Octavian freaking Simmons".

Plus it would track that Octavian has a Roman style name.

Therefore his name is probably Octavius (anglicized as Octavian) something-something. Because he'd have two last names.

An example would be: Octavius Flavius Celsus. Anglicized to: Octavian Flavian Kels. Or something. (This name would mean "Octavian of the tall blonde family").

Anyway, I need a canon surname.
