The Protein Predicament: Animal, Plant, or Both?
By Dr. David B. Clark DABCI, NMD, DC
The importance of protein in our diet is a well-accepted fact. It’s crucial for growth, cellular repair, and immune function. However, as much as health experts agree on the necessity of protein, the ‘how much’ and ‘what kind’ of protein are points of disagreement. Should we get our protein solely from plants, animals, or a combination of both? How much protein is ideal?
Understanding Protein
Protein is a macronutrient made up of smaller units known as amino acids. These amino acids are categorized as essential (cannot be synthesized by the body) and non-essential (can be synthesized by the body). The primary point of divergence between animal and plant proteins lies in their amino acid profiles and other associated nutrients.
Animal Protein
Animal-source proteins, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy foods, are often referred to as complete proteins. This means they contain all essential amino acids in sufficient quantities. Moreover, they are rich in essential nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Plant Protein
Plant proteins, derived from legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds, are generally not considered complete proteins because they lack one or more essential amino acids. However, by combining different sources of plant protein, you can still obtain a complete amino acid profile. Additionally, plant proteins are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and are generally lower in saturated fats.
Digestibility
It’s true that plant proteins typically require more effort to be completely digested compared to animal proteins. This is due to the presence of certain anti-nutrients like phytates and oxalates that can inhibit absorption. However, cooking, fermenting, or sprouting plant foods can significantly improve nutrient availability.
Nutritional Requirements
The average adult should consume between 3 to 4 ounces (approximately 80 to 110 grams) of protein daily. For pregnant or nursing women and individuals over 65, the higher end of this scale is recommended. Around one-third of your daily caloric intake should ideally come from protein sources, whether animal-based, plant-based, or a mix of both.
Ethical and Environmental Considerations
Beyond the nutritional aspects, many people consider the ethical and environmental implications of their protein choices. Animal farming often has a more significant environmental impact in terms of land use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, a diet overly reliant on monocrops like soy can also pose sustainability challenges.
Whether animal or plant protein is better for you can depend on numerous factors such as lifestyle, pre-existing health conditions, ethical beliefs, and nutritional needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
At Health+Plus Clinic, we recommend a balanced approach to diet and nutrition, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods. If you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions, consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized guidance is always the best course of action.

The Midsummer gathering for Carleton and Oakdale Groves during the RDNA’s anniversary/reunion ended up being small, with only four regular members in attendance, but what a nice, peaceful (if not horrifically humid) time among friends! We held the ritual itself at the Hill of Three Oaks and the wind thankfully blew the smoke of the ritual away from those gathered (since we all probably have enough in our lungs from the Canadian wildfires already). Sacrifices went up in great blazes, and when John (@minnesotadruids) called for the blessing of the Waters of Life from Belenos, the wind picked up in the oak branches (as it did during several other auspicious moments, imo!). We then processed to a few different places in the arb, and I got a clearer look at the Druid’s Den, which is where I eventually might like to hold my all-night vigil, if I choose to join the priesthood someday. By the time we made it to the Druid’s Circle, though, the heat was taking its toll on us, so we returned to the parking lot and parted ways to stave off heat exhaustion in the ACs of our cars.
Aside: John pointed out some Missouri gooseberry growing along one of the paths, and I was able to snip a woody branch for my Ogham bouquet at home! Very lucky find, considering my excursions to find some bushes that had been marked on the Falling Fruit app just last week were… fruitless.
Now to cool off at home and hope all my sunscreen reapplications were enough!

Wyatt Flores Drops New EP 'Half Life' — A Milestone in Country Music's New Era
Country music's rising star Wyatt Flores has released his new EP, "Half Life," today through Island Records. You can stream or purchase it here. Check out “Running Out Of Time” above. Wyatt Flores has been garnering critical acclaim recently. He was the subject of an in-depth profile by journalist Josh Crutchmer in The New York Times, which highlighted Flores' unique ability to evoke deep emotional responses with his music. The article titled, “Wyatt Flores…Has a Superpower: Tapping Emotions,” notes that the 22-year-old singer-songwriter’s music profoundly impacts its listeners. The EP "Half Life" consists of eight tracks, including the previously released "Milwaukee" and "Wish I Could Stay." The latter song was featured by Rolling Stone in their "Songs You Need To Know" list, and Billboard has praised Flores' blend of slide guitars and piano paired with his natural, conversational singing style that seamlessly transitions from rock-infused urgency to classic country twang. This release marks a monumental year for Flores, identified by Rolling Stone as one of their 25 "Future of Music" artists. His achievements this year have significantly boosted his career trajectory. Moreover, Flores has been named Amazon’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year, featured in Spotify’s Hot Country Class of 2024 and CMT’s Listen Up roster, and made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. To celebrate his new music, Flores is set to lead his "Here There & Gone" tour this summer. He will perform at notable venues including The Intersection in Grand Rapids, The Windjammer on Isle of Palms, Denver's Ogden Theatre, The Knitting Factory in Boise, Ace of Spades in Sacramento for two nights, and the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. Additionally, Flores will appear at several major festivals this year such as Stagecoach, Hangout, CMA Fest, Windy City Smokeout, and others. See below for the complete list of tour dates.
Read the full article

Battling Medical Gaslighting for Empowered Healthcare
Missouri Clinic Shines a Light on Patient Advocacy
A recent survey uncovered a staggering statistic: 71% of women have been told by a physician that their symptoms were merely imagined.”
— Dr. David Clark
Increasingly, women are being told that their health symptoms are simply “all in their head,” a disturbing trend known as medical gaslighting. Leading the charge against this insidious issue is Health+Plus, a holistic medicine provider pioneering an initiative focused on listening to patients, validating their experiences, and providing comprehensive evaluations.
“Health+Plus firmly rejects this practice. It has no place in medicine,” he said. Instead, his facility insists on empowering patients, offering a platform where their concerns are taken seriously, and their symptoms thoroughly investigated.
“Your voice matters,” Dr Clark said. “We approach patient consultations with deep empathy, acknowledging the validity of symptoms and committing to understanding the discomfort they’re experiencing.”
A Chiropractic Internist [DABCI] and a Naturopath [NMD], Dr. Clark has been in private practice since 1975. People from all over the country began to hear good reports of Dr. Clark’s success in treating chronic illness with a natural approach began traveling to his little office in Oak Grove. Since 1999, he more than quadrupled the size of that office to accommodate the needs of his patients who seek a natural, caring health approach to their healthcare. Dr. Clark is dedicated to conducting comprehensive evaluations for every new patient, performing an array of medical tests to uncover the root causes of health problems. This thorough examination of the ‘whole person’ helps ensure that no potential health issue is overlooked.
“At Health+Plus, we understand that health problems can stem from a variety of factors, and they endeavor to address all possible underlying causes – from hormonal imbalances to harmful lifestyle choices,” Dr. Clark added. “The facility provides tailored recommendations based on our findings to help improve patients’ overall well-being. It starts, however, with listening and not being dismissive.”
While they cannot guarantee success in every case, Health+Plus underscores its commitment to taking every patient seriously.
“At Health+Plus, we greatly value the trust of our patients and strive to create a safe space where they can openly share their concerns,” says Melissa Abramovitz, APRN/FNP-BC, who collaborates closely with Dr. Clark in providing patient care. “The foundation of that trust is built on actively listening to our patients and taking their experiences seriously.”
“Gaslighting has to go,” Dr. Clark said.
To learn more about Health+Plus or schedule an appointment, call 816-625-4497 or visit their contact page. Be sure to visit their blog for weekly updates, tips, and news about health and well-being.

Day 15 of the BAT
(Warning: this post will contain references only old people will understand. Your ability to not roll your eyes will be tested.)
Pilot Mountain or Mount Pilot? If you grew up on black-and-white television, then you know the answer is Mount Pilot because you learned North Carolina geography from this guy. Sheriff Andy Taylor was the down-to-earth, homespun law enforcement official who kept his gun in his drawer.
Of course, the map behind his desk alternated between an upside down map of Idaho or Nevada, depending on the episode, so maybe geography wasn't his strong suit.
The cast of "The Andy Griffith Show" often talked about Mt. Pilot up the street from Mayberry, but in our version of the multiverse, this is Pilot Mountain, which is in the neighborhood of Sheriff Taylor's jurisdiction. It is an impressive sight over the freeway. Andy Griffith, the star of the show, snuck in references to his hometown in the show. His reward was to get a local parkway named after him.
The common theme in today's pictures, and the road trip from Greensboro to Nashville, was a lot of the same beautiful landscape you see in these pictures. The drive is almost all on freeways across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee, and all of the DOT's worked hard to get high trees or walls along the byways as noise buffers and, probably, to keep us tourists from seeing their less scenic acreage. Wyoming could learn a few things.
Tomorrow will be a 10+ hour day from Nashville to Oak Grove, Missouri because of $$$ (again) and because we've been on the road for half a month. We want to sleep in our own lumpy bed.
As always, keep following along across social media via the hashtages #ccandjt and #bat2024.
If you want to help us on this extravaganza, our website has books and links to Venmo and such. TIA LYL!
