Dark Star Falling (4 of ?)

Gortash wakes with a start. The only sound, the whirs and clicks of the steel watcher at the other end of the penthouse. The only light, the dim moonlight that makes its way thru the frosted glass, partially blocked by the lithe silhouette of his erstwhile paramour.

“This one doesn’t count,” their whisper cuts thru the darkness. Before he can object a spike of pain, his surprised scream, muffled by the palm of their hand.

The dagger slides right past his clavicle and into his scapula. There’s a unique pain when something touches bone. A sickly-sweet tickling sensation that’s neither sharp nor dull, but reverberates thru the entire body. As the nerve and muscle pain gives way, Gortash knows that this wasn’t a killing blow. The dagger penetrated too high to puncture a lung and he’s not choking on blood so it wasn’t arterial.

Darling is settling in, gently somehow, across his chest. He can feel the bony ridges that criss-cross their body thru their clothing–so they’re not wearing armor this time. Even still, the movement and pressure sends wave after wave of sickening vibrations thru his body and he fights to stay conscious thru the agony and ecstasy. Moving his right arm is out of the question, but he finds that if he is very deliberate he can lift his left arm and wrap it around Darling’s torso, letting his palm rest on the ridges of their spine, between their shoulders. He’s not sure how long they stayed like that, in the pitch dark, controlling his breathing and listening to theirs.

“Orin stole my bear,” was the next thing they said. It is such a dramatic non sequitur that Gortash has to fight off a laugh that would surely be his end. “She’s angry that I murdered her new murderer. She thinks she can compel me to kill you.”

“I am at your mercy,” he musters. Yelling for the steel watcher wouldn’t save him and at this moment he’s sure he doesn’t want to be saved. Not from this. Not from them.

“I don’t kill for others anymore. I only kill who I want to kill.”

“Bully for me, then.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. I might still let Karlach kill you. Depending on how things go,” they say. Deadpan enough to be joking, but he’s not certain. He doesn’t care.

They’re holding his right shoulder down now, initially causing a whole new spike of pain and nausea, but then as that fades the pressure is a relief. They’re pulling themself up and in the darkness all he can do is breathe in their scent and feel their warmth. Blood, citrus, and herbs. Their lips brush over his skin and then they’re gone.

The light thru the window is just starting to change color. He finds a small bottle pressed into his hand. A healing potion, the cheap kind, but it’ll stop the bleeding when he pulls the dagger out of his shoulder. He assumes that’s what it’s for. Best not to take anything Darling does for granted.

In that brief moment of distraction he’s lost track of them. He stumbles into the middle of the room. The steel watcher stands placidly next to the door.

“Was it everything you hoped for, Darling?” A voice drifts down from the walkway above. Posh, upper city accent, lilting but masculine.

“Jealous?,” Darling replies, barely audible.

“Of Enver Gortash? Hardly. Back to camp?”

“Let’s go kill someone.”

“That’s my bhaal-babe. Off we go then.” Gortash grabs the dagger as their voices fade into the distance. The handle is wrapped in paper, folded neatly as tho on the leg of a carrier pigeon. He slides the paper off and inspects it in the pre-dawn light. It’s a letter, his own handwriting, to the editor of the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette, ordering a hit piece on Darling’s adventurers. He has a feeling he’s not going to enjoy today’s broadsheet.

the fact that kevin day also witnessed a man being chopped up in the tower at evermore after neil’s audition is mad, and it’s something that is very much not addressed ever. like, maybe part of kevin was so accepting of how things were in the nest because he knew that this is the second branch, and if he were to leave, he’d become the main branch’s problem because he knows too much, and the main branch casually chops men up as a warning to literal children. and then he’s still called a coward for leaving ?? but also a coward for wanting to go back to make the inevitable less painful for him ??? and that’s not even considering what riko and tetusji did to him specifically, before even jean arrived at the nest. and his mother’s death would’ve been quite recent at that point. just insane.

if it meant that you would never be numb like this again, what would you give up?

maybe it's the childhood stuff or the religious trauma or how your dad doesn't believe in medication, but this is how you are, right. you need to have a counterbalance. suffering has to have its own reward. there needs to be a point to it. and if you're happy - if you could just be happy, and the world could actually fill in enough space that the edges of your spirit actually meet the horizon of your body - you would need to pay for it.

your passions? that one seems fair, but how could you actually be happy without them. well, you'd never be numb again, so maybe you'd be able to find joy in the small things like you used to. gleeful, you'd make coffee and breakfast into an artform. you'd find a way to make it make sense, somehow. you'd move on. it'd be different, but it would be doable.

your lover? your friends? this would be hard. you owe so much to your community. still, you could maybe make yourself a small home in the woods. you could live a quiet life, one devoid of friendship - but also without this horrible grey mist. a life like bigfoot, then. you'd figure out how to make the most of it.

your hair. your teeth. all of it.

sometimes you are jealous of mental illness as it appears in media: a big stroke of a meltdown, a firestorm that resolves prettily in therapy. it is flashing lights and thin teenagers. you've absolutely had breakdowns that stole the show - but life after resolved into a pixel art of things you managed to piece together afterwards, not a tapestry of a heart made suddenly-beautiful. that people could pick up blades as if they weigh nothing, that the way it all appears is as a cry for help, not a slow backsliding.

you have to stop the thought: i'd give up everything.

but also - be real. you'd never give up your dog. nor your best friend. nor the way you feel walking while through deep fog. you'd never give up the last bonfire of summer, the reckless laughter of halloween. so you do still love things.

maybe that's the problem: you know it should be easier. you have everything you could possibly want. so how come you are still trapped? still yearning?

all 3 minisodes are about ... humans dying and being brought back to life, or more like, how that is not possible...and how Heaven and Hell have worked around that

In A Companion to Owls, Job kids never died even when they should have, Heaven didn't know enough to distinguish that they were the same children and Sitis quickly got that the miracle was... that their children didn't die to begin with. Once they are dead it is game over and Crowley and Aziraphale refused to let them die

In The Resurrectionists (it is literally called The Resurrectionists!!) and it is how one girl is shot and they can't do anything once she is dead. And Crowley still goes off of his way to make sure the other one doesn't kill herself, risking everything. And we know hell's extreme sanctions are probably what makes him ask for insurance, for holy water. On the other hand, this episode is called The ResurrectionistS, plural, but we meet only one of them ..while in the other side of the sign is Christ himself.

THEN in 1941, we have ZOMBIES, the literal living dead walking around, and Furfur states that he can't make them living people again due to a clause and just leave them as zombies to roam the earth. We see how cursed they are, rotting and bound to eat brains but not human.

EVEN! From episode 1, we get a big Clue: miracles are measured in lazarii, and resurrecting someone is no easy feat. They were telling us to watch out about coming back to life... and how only the mightiest of archangels are able to use that amount of power (or an angel and a demon holding hands...)

and I do want to point out that part of the things Gabriel remembered was this line

Job kids didn't die, in victorian england Wee Morag died falling in the hands of a resurrectionist, and the Germans died and came back- just not quite alive. Every day it is getting closer,

... they are telling us that the second coming is afoot, but they are also showing us that there is no second opportunity on this earth. Once you are dead, you are dead.

and Crowley, in the direst time when Aziraphale is breaking his little demonic heart, says

And now, the plan to resurrect one human to make the end of the world happen is in Aziraphale's hands.

in danny's defense: the word "freak" is. a mini beserker button for him for.... obvious ghostly reasons, so like, even if its not directed at him, he still very much unappreciates Martinez's insults at Battinson. Danny may or may not be projecting.

he's not going to hurt the guy! not in any serious or permanently disfiguring way at least! But he is going to leave mean sticky notes on the square part of his spine that he can't reach, and stick salt in his 3AM Late Night Crime Scene Coffee, and kick the bottom of his heel while he's walking so he stumbles. And other petty, infuriating things that tally up and boil over, over time.
