Rolling playlist gif for GIMP: a tutorial ⏠by Joy from @creativexspiritâÂ
Credit where credit is due, I fell in love with this gif tutorial but EH I don't use Photoshop anymore so I made it my mission to recreate the effect in GIMP.
This tutorial uses AnimStack, a Script-Fu script for GIMP to give you tools for the creation of animated GIFs. As it's super useful, even if you don't follow this tutorial I highly recommend to download. How to install AnimStack to GIMP in tumblr's FAQ: https://animstack.tumblr.com/faq
This tutorial uses my playlist template.
Tutorial with screenshots is under the cut.
Like or reblog if you download. Please donât request as your own, respect my work. Donât hesitate to tag me if you follow the tutorial! I would love to see your edits.
STEP 01.
Change the titles, the colors, the icons. Tip if you want to change the song title that are not visible: move the layers group "Song list", so you can see the text you modify.
Add songs by copy/pasting the "Song 5" layers group. Keep this layers group inside the "Song list" group.
Try to move the layers group so that it is aligned with above songs.
To place back correctly the "Song list", here's a tip: use the align tool and click on the "Song list" group. In the tool's options, in the "relative to" drop down menu, choose "Selection". Back to the layers window: in the "Background" group, right click on the "Color nuance" layer and choose "Alpha to selection". Now you are free to align your "Song list" layer group to the top and center of that selection, and it should be alright!
STEP 02.
Now the tutorial actually begins. Flatten all layer groups using Image > Flatten Layer Groups. (Don't mind my GIMP language, it is in French but the AnimStacks tools are in English, you should have the same menu.)
And now your layers window should look like mine, minus the links on the layers.
Now, see the linked layers? Merge them all together. You should end up with only 4 layers: "Song list", "Background", "GUIDE MASK SONG LIST FOR GIF", "ArriĂšre-plan".
Note: you don't really need the "ArriĂšre-plan" layer, so if you want to, you can delete it or you can merge it with the background layer. In my case, I will delete it.
STEP 03.
Reorder your layers. This is very important as AnimStacks will process the layers from top to bottom, so the layers order counts.
Put your "Background" layer on top, your "Song list" layer under it. As for the guide mask, we don't really care as we will delete it later.
STEP 04.
We are now going to add AnimStacks tags to our layer names. Here you'll have to do a bit of maths because you can choose the number of frames your gif will ultimately contain and adjust the tags parameters accordingly. This might seem complicated but it really isn't. I'll start by showing the tags to add, and explain how this will be processed. I will then give you the maths to choose your parameters accordingly.
Below, the tags I have added to my layers. You will have to write the same things as I do but what you might change is:
the number of "30" in Background.
the y parameter of the offset tag "-12".
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO REMOVE THE [copy:0] and change it.
OK but what does each tag do? Remember, AnimStacks process is from top layer to bottom. Here the first layer is our Background layer: [*30] means it will duplicate the "Background" layer 30 times.
Now, onto "Song list" layer: [copy:0] will check all layers above the "Song list" layer that has no tag (at this point, all of our 30 "Background" layers have no tag), create a group for each found layer and place the "Song list" layer at position 0. Ok this explanation is wacky, for better explanation, please check the documentation.
The offset tag is necessary for the rolling effect: at each addition of the "Song list" layer, it won't just be a simple duplicate of the "Song list" layer, but the layer will have moved a little by (x,y) = (0,-12), allowing us to get that "rolling" effect in our gif. (And now you get why I said "y parameter".)
OK now, but how did I choose my parameters? So for reference, I only have 5 songs - I didn't add any song to the song list. For my maths, you need the height of the "Song list" layer. Check it with the scaling tool.
The height of my layer is 353 pixels (awful number meh). I choose to have 30 frames. So the move of the layers will have to be of 353/30 = 11.77 pixels. I choose 12 pixels because you can't have floats for the number of pixels, can you?
DO NOT FORGET the minus in front of the y parameter. My y parameter is "-12". Otherwise, the playlist will roll towards the bottom.
STEP 05.
We are now going to add a mask to the "Song list" layer to avoid seeing the title songs where we shouldn't see them. See that obnoxious orange layer "GUIDE MASK SONG LIST FOR GIF"? Yes, it is its time to shine.
Right click on the "GUIDE MASK SONG LIST FOR GIF" layer and choose "Alpha to Selection". (Well in French it's Alpha vers SĂ©lection.)
Now, we are going to use that selection to create a layer mask on the "Song list" layer.
Right click on "Song list" and choose "Add a layer mask". /!\ Your selection must still be active. (Well in French it's "Ajouter un masque de calque" but you can see the icon right? By the way, you can also add a layer mask by clicking on the icon in the layer window, see circled icon in red.)
Now, choose Selection for the creation of the layer mask.
If you don't have the above results for the mask, it might be that you foreground and background colors are not the same as mine, meaning black and white respectively.
If you don't have the same colors as me above, click on the small pair of squares the blue arrow I draw is pointing to. It will default your foreground and background colors to black and white. Keyboard shortcut is D. (I don't think I changed it.)
And now, we don't need the orange guide mask layer anymore, so you can delete it.
STEP 06.
Last check before process: make sure you have no area selected (or you will get a weird result). Cancel all selection with Selection > None.
STEP 07.
We now begin the AnimStacks tags process.
In Filters > Animation, find "Process Animation Tags" and click on it.
The process might take a while depending on the number of frames you have.
If everything is correct, you should have something similar to that. Now, we can check if the gif is correct and if we liked the number of frames and y parameter by previewing the animation in Filters > Animation > Playback...
STEP 07.
This step is optional but you might want to change the time of our first frame to be longer so people have time to read the beginning. Do so by changing the layer group name by adding (800ms) to it. This means the frame corresponding to that layer group will be 800ms.
You can check if it's long enough by doing the playback again.
STEP 08.
Now, we have to flatten all layer groups if we want to export to a GIF. In order to do so, we will just use the same trick as the beginning: Image > Flatten Layer Groups.
STEP 09.
Optional, but good to do: to make our gif lighter, we are also going to optimize the gif. In order to do so, do Filters > Animation > Optimize (for GIF) I don't know personally the difference with the other optimization method. Choose either you'll have similar results it's a difference in the implied algorithm I guess.
This step might take a while, but it's ok. When it's done processing you should have a new image created with the same results as me above. You can playback to check if everything is correct but here our job is done! We will now export the GIF.
STEP 10.
You can now export to GIF! Go to File > Export as..., choose the name of your file and end it with the .gif extension.
If you get an error message because some layers are not cropped, no worries: just choose the "crop" option (but you should not with the optimization).
Now, don't forget to check "as animation" when saving the GIF, if you haven't done the optimization, choose the delay between frames (the first frame will still be of 800ms), and choose "replace".
WITHOUT OPTIMIZATION:
(With the optimization process, all layers already have delay and animation replacement type thingy specified.)
AND VOILA, YOU HAVE YOUR GIF! If you mess around more with AnimStacks, you can do cool stuffs with it!
Now, how do you pronounce the G in gif? Also shh, don't say you saw the mistake I made when changing the title's songs in the tutorial, I wanted to write Everybody Talks by Neon Trees.

Chapter 33: Betray The Moon as Acolyte
âââââââââàŒ»âœàŒșâââââââââ
September 8th, 1976
Remus peered up to the night sky, resplendent with a coruscating kaleidoscope of stars and the full moon. He yawned, acutely aware of his bones shifting, aching and cracking. Resting on a small cot pressed against the wall in the corner of the shrieking shack, Remus felt his temperature rise and skin stretch too thinly across his body.
âIâll be back once the sun rises, dearie,â Madam Pomfrey called out, the door millimetres from locking shut.
âWait,â he said and Madam Pomfrey re-opened the door with a warm, motherly smile.
âYes?â
âThank you. For always helping, I know it can be⊠tiresome.â
How long has it been? That Pomfrey had been helping him out, every full moon â had known of his affliction and been there to assist? It was years now, countless hours of her time wasted on him.
Was he that much of a burden? The thought left a bitter taste in his mouth, that made his face pucker and heart lacerate itself in fresh wounds.
âDonât concern yourself with me, honey.â Then the door clicked shut and he heard her utter a spell; to confine the beast within the four walls.
The tormenting plague increased every minute as the countdown to his transformation loomed. His heart thudded stridently and his breathing was ragged and strained. His teeth grinded against each other and his tongue swept across them, feeling them elongate and reshape in preparation.
Remus grabbed the hem of his jumper, exasperated by the overwhelming heat and because he didnât want to shred it in the process. As he slipped out, feeling the adored red fabric, tattered with holes and frayed yarn in his hands, the door opened and he could already smell Peter and James. Subconsciously, he shielded his body from them, to avoid them from seeing all of his scars.
Remus became dizzy instantly. James wore a particularly strong perfume that day.
More than anything, over the pain and hint of repugnance, he was nervous. It would be the first full moon since⊠the prank that the Marauders would be together for his transformations. Or all the Marauders aside from one and nobody wanted to address it.
A sharp pain thundered through his skull and he knew time was slipping from him. Remus couldnât recall the last time the moments before his transformation were that painful.
âYou okay, Moons?â Wormtail asked, dropping down beside him. Prongs followed in suit, taking his sweater and folding it neatly.
âIâm fine â umph ââ
âShit! Prongs, get back and turn. Now!â
âââââââââàŒ»âœàŒșâââââââââ
After a week of lessons, there were considerable adjustments to the curriculum. Everyone noticed and it quickly dispersed a sombre milieu on all of Hogwarts.
Classes were smaller, many parents deciding to transfer their children to other magical schools around the world. Y/N even received a few worried letters from Matthew that there was an abundance of new British students attending Ilvermorny.
In his worried letters, Matthew informed her that the MACUSA and French Ministry of Magic had been stepping in, fighting forces against the wizarding war. It was all news to her. Ever since Jamesâ parents cancelled their subscription to the Daily Prophet after their beliefs that they were biased, she hadnât been able to catch up.
More defence and attack spells were taught and everyone became well aware of why someone of Professor Elwayâs reputation and skill was there. The same went for the Duelling re-opening and even Flitwick initiated small tutorial sessions for students of all grades to teach them defensive spells.
Defence Against the Dark Arts became nothing more than a Muggle military camp. Elway drilled the students; attack and defence spell after the other, never stopping for a second. Transfigurations focused more on concealment and vanishing charm and every day McGonagall looked as if she aged a decade by the solemn, haunted look that nowadays was permanently carved into her.
Herbology went over a vast majority of life-saving plants, herbs and how to make their own medicine. And Potions heavily focused on identifying spiked potions with poisons and how to create reversal serums in case of emergencies.
The students of Hogwarts werenât brainless. They knew they were training them for war.
She tried to ignore it, but if anything Y/N felt foolish. The magical world was meant to be an escape, not a guardhouse.
It didnât help that the murders from the summer played heavily in her mind along with the rumours of Voldemort recruiting students from Hogwarts, prompting a spike of distrust to spread rampantly. It wasnât time to fight or lose people but to keep those you trusted and loved close. So Lily keeping her distance had her worried.
Sorted into the same dorm as last year, she reckoned she would have some time with Lily but every day it seemed like she was busy with prefect duties, or had homework, or reading, or a new study group she needed to rush off to. She and Lily hadnât resumed their usual nightly routines either, hadnât sat with her in the Great Hall since the welcome back feast and hadnât said more than a word to her.
It was evident that Lily was avoiding her and only her.
Maybe Y/N had gotten clingy, got too close too hastily because it felt too similar to how her mother treated her. It caused the imminent, spine-chilling feeling of wanting to push everyone away.
Extreme distress was starting to pile up.
Luckily, James stayed a constant consistency in her life and a lot of her pent-up fears dissipated by his presence. He never ignored her, if anything he went out of his way to be nearer. Even Peter and most notably, Remus, had become part of her daily life more than ever.
It was terrifying and everything told her to run. Donât get too close, donât get too comfortable. But it was hard not to.
That morning, James crept up to her dorm, knocking softly as she popped out, ready for the day. He looked exhausted; his eye bags were prominent, darkened and cradled in his arm, he held Remusâ rabbit.
âTo keep him company,â James explained, yawning while escorting her down the staircase, passing the rabbit over. âIt was a rough night.â
It would be the first time they would try to incorporate Y/N into replacing Black and balance out Jamesâ other priorities with Remusâ moon cycles. And unable to reschedule Quidditch try-outs to another morning and James forced to leave prematurely, she would have to step in.
But her fears skyrocketed. Were they pushing it? She was only visiting him⊠It wasnât out of pity and she genuinely wanted to be there to support Remus.
âWhat if he doesnât want visitors?â
James rolled his eyes. âIt will be fine. Heâll appreciate it more than heâll let on.â
But then a faint floral and citrus smell flowed through the distilled air as she took a deep breath.
âJames, you smell really good... Are you wearing perfume?â
His frown transformed into a prideful simper. âBought the same perfume as my mum. Helps when I miss her.â
She gasped. âA mamaâs boy!â And then pinched his cheek.
About to step out of the portrait, James mustâve accidentally activated a prank because the moment his hand brushed against the portrait, four Muggle stereos floated above his head, blasting break-up songs on the highest volume. It rattled the walls and made their ears bleed.
âFucking hell!â James shouted, his wand swishing around to stop the music while Y/N stuffed Remusâ rabbit inside her bag and bewitched a silencing spell around it.
âStudents are sleeping!â Lily shrieked, rushing down the stairs and charmed away the stereos.
âOi! You think we donât know?â James retorted, a hand clutching his ear. âEmmelineâŠâ
âEmmeline?â Lily repeated, shaking her head. âMay Merlin himself save the poor girl daft enough to end up with you.â
The only enlightened that took away from the war and recent murders was Emmeline and her friends pranking and wreaking havoc like the Marauders onto James as a punishment.
He deserved it and even James agreed.
âWhere are you two headed?â Lily inquired and for the first time since the train ride, she addressed Y/N head-on.
A glimmer of hope.
âAw, finally starting to care about me, Evans?â James joked although itâs laced with uncertainty.
Y/N cut off Lily before she had the chance to speak, eager to answer her question. âItâs Remus.â
Recognition filtered through her, gaze shooting up to the large grandfather clock beside the bookshelves. Lilyâs head bobbed repeatedly, pressing her lips together sympathetically. She considered James for a moment.
âWill you be back in time for lessons?â Lily then whipped her hands around. âYâknow what, forget it. Iâll take notes for⊠both of you.â
Y/N felt James nudge her foot, simultaneously forcing out a cough. His hand went to scratch behind his neck. âR-right. Erm, I â we appreciate it, Evans, but ugh â we have a free period this morning.â
Lilyâs jaw dropped. âOh. Sorry.â
âNO!â James said a little too loud. âI mean, no. Itâs fine. Thank you.â
Y/N pursed her lips, her neck bending as her shoulders tensed while watching their interaction play out. âAlrighty, we should go. Thank you, Petals.â She interjected. Her hands spun James around as they walked out of the common room and to the hospital wing.
Both students groaned out loudly. Black was there, sitting on the ground and back pressed against the wall to the wing.
âHe doesnât want to see you,â James challenged. His feet pivoted to Black, before her hands pressed against his chest, preventing him from touching Black and starting yet another fight. âLeave it.â
His eyes flickered from her to Black. Sighing, he made a slight rearward movement and removed his glasses to rub his eyes.
âJust donât follow us.â
They walked inside without sparing him another glance.
âHere comes the fucking sun, Moons!â James chirped, his mood altering drastically. But she staggered behind a beat.
Remus was already awake, quietly chatting to Peter. His bed curtains were half drawn and she took his rabbit from her bag, pulling it close to her chest.
His head snapped in their direction, but instead of his eyes landing on James, it went squarely to her. She smiled, eyes analyzing every ripple of expression. He didnât seem angry. No, not at all, but stunned.
Once James realized she wasnât by his side anymore, he turned and looped an arm over her shoulder. He whispered, âMoony wonât bite. Itâs okay.â
âI wasnât expecting you.â Remus finally said, smiling.
âOf course Iâd come.â Confidence now circulated her body as she approached him, handing over his rabbit. James was delighted at his response while the rabbit nuzzled its way into the crook of Remusâ neck, tickling him. She murmured into his ear, not wanting to peer pressure him by others' wants, âYou donât mind me being here, do you? Iâll leave, no hurt feelings.â
Remus shook his head, petting his rabbit. âNo, please stay.â He croaked, voice deep and tired.
âOi!â James said, albeit quietly.
âFlirt somewhere else,â Peter added with false annoyance.
James nodded. âSo, little Moony ââ
âLittle Moony?â Remus groaned. âWhat?â
âAw,â she teased, âIs moody Moony making an appearance?â
âDid you come just to make fun of me?â
But then Peter grinned cheekily, moving to softly slap his hand down on his thigh in the same tempo as Here Comes the Sun. Y/N and James immediately caught on, ready to chagrin while Remus shook his hands in front of his face to get them to stop.
âDonât you ââ
âHere comes the sun, moody Moony ââ âCrikey.â
âHere comes the sun, and we say itâs alright!â They sang, keeping their voices to a minimum to not worsen his potential headache. They had to hold back their laughter as Peter began to replicate the horrible instrumental with his voice. James sang the loudest. âLittle Moony, itâs been a long cold moon cycle.â
Madam Pomfrey poked her head from her office, ready to tell the visitors to be quieter than a mouse â or kick them out in favour of Remusâ rest but she froze. Remus was poorly attempting to cover his smile, his cheeks burning a bright red and she hadnât seen him that happy after full moons. And after what happened last year, his happiness was all she wanted. So she sat back down, smiling to herself at the horrid sing.
âLittle Moony, the smiles returning to the faces ââ
âGuys!â
âLittle Moony, it feels like years since itâs been here.â
âââââââââàŒ»âœàŒșâââââââââ
James eventually left, rushing to tryouts with Marlene with a great deal of apprehension. When the bell rang, students rushing down for breakfast, both Y/N and Peter departed momentarily to the Great Hall, grabbing a few snacks and tea Remus requested.
But the moment Peter stepped foot outside the hospital wing, it was as if any sort of energy left his body. He became sluggish, moving slowly and yawned multiple times.
âPete, go back to him, Iâll get everything,â she implored. âOr get some rest. I canât imagine staying up all night can be good.â
âItâs ââ A yawn. ââ Sorry. Iâll be fine.â
She didnât push. They made their way around fast and exited quickly before a group of seventh and sixth years swarmed Peter. A few even greeted her, attempting to strike a conversation.
Peter sent her a dejected look, passing her the rest of the snacks and teacup.
âIâll meet you there.â
She rushed back in record time. Black was still sitting outside the wing and she could faintly hear him muttering her name but she disregarded him wholly.
But the sight inside the hospital made her heart shatter.
Remus was haggard, dishevelled and face screwed together in pain. He tried to push himself up multiple times to reach behind his head, to his pillow. But it was futile.
The crinkling of the wrapper in her hand made her wince; it became the loudest object in the world at that moment. It forewarned Remus and she gently padded over. She sat down gently on the edge of his bed, setting down everything on the metal tray.
âDonât push yourself â here, let me.â Remus visibly reclined into himself, covering his scarred arms with the blanket coiled by his side. But he listened without complaints as she reached behind his head, fluffing his pillow and helped him lay back down gently. âNot feeling too good?â
âLike shit.â
It became awkward fast.
âUm⊠Peterâs coming. Was held up with a couple of seventh years.â âYou can leave if you donât want to be here,â Remus blurted out, âI won't force you ââ
âWoah there!â She felt as if she was slapped by him. The sudden change had her wheeling. âWho said youâre forcing me? Youâre my Moony, no?â
He breathed out a chuckle and shifted towards her. She glanced at the tray with a few potions. What he said stuck to her.
âDo you mind if you can pour those into my tea? Thanks.â Remus croaked.
She nodded, unscrewed the cork to the vials and mixed it into the drink. The clinking sound of the spoon tapping against the porcelain cup.
âWhat is this?â
âUm⊠a mixture of powder silver and Nightshade,â grumbled Remus, trying to push himself up as she handed him the cup. âHelps with the pain and fogginess.â
Her mind was restless. âCan I ask some questions?â
His eyebrows knitted together. âQuestions?â
âYâknow, about being a werewolf.â
He took a giant gulp. âDid you just skip all the Werewolf questions on the OWLs?â Remus laughed.
âI bet half of itâs false.â She admitted truthfully. âBesides, how am I supposed to help next time if I donât know?â
Remus stayed quiet for a long time after she said that and she wondered if she pushed a boundary. But then he nodded, urging her to continue.
âOkay⊠so silver doesnât hurt you, right?â She watched as Remus sip his tea before having to put it down to laugh.
âMyth.â
âSo all the silver bullet stuff..?â
He gave a full-body laugh. âMyth. Sorry, not what you were expecting?â
âNo,â she admitted after a bit, embarrassed. All those children's stories were falseâŠ
âSilver canât hurt me, I donât grow hair rapidly. I like eating rare meat; I have trouble sleeping, I donât have curved fingernails or low-set ears. I canât run super fast but I can see better in the dark, can hear, smell and am stronger than the average Muggle or Wizard.â
âCan you always smell or hear better? Or does it increase near the full moon?â
âIt becomes stronger near the full moon and after for a while.â
âWait⊠Does that mean you can smell people. Like me?!â She was appalled and crossed her arms over herself as if the action would suddenly cover any scent.
Remus barked out laughing before wincing as a dull pain shocked through his system. âYou smell fine. Donât worry.â
Her hands found their way to cover her mouth. She was mortified. âYou have a way with words, Lupin.â
Remus was on the verge of tears, nearly choking on himself to prevent laughing. He endured the deep bruise on the side of his ribs digging into him but he couldnât stop.
She slapped his arm playfully and took the now empty teacup from his hand, setting it down on the metal tray and ushered him to slide over in his bed. He doesnât hesitate.
Y/N slid beside him, and she could feel the fluctuating rise and fall of Remusâ chest as his chuckles came to a slow halt. She took the rabbit from his lap, holding it in her arms carefully.
âDoes she have a name?â She questioned, scratching behind its floppy ears. Remus chose the least threatening rabbit.
âNo.â
âWe should think of one then.â
Remus watched her, listening to the words pouring out. But then he cringed inwardly, reminded of his cruelty to her a couple of months ago. He wasnât expecting her to visit and it came as a pleasant surprise. It made his heart flutter. She wasnât scared. She hadnât been lying that night. He was accepted.
He tuned in to her heartbeat: steady and calm. Slow.
Her words echoed in his head. I feel safe with you.
Safe.
Remus felt a whisper of a smile worm it's way onto him. As soon the realization came, the dull ache in his body subdued, the burning in his throat faded and the hollow ache in his heart filled with a golden glow. Just a bit.
âââââââââàŒ»âœàŒșâââââââââ
September 10th, 1976
âIâm sorry,â Black said, his eyes wide and pleading as he sat beside her in the Great Hall. She ignored him.
âI need to explain, please,â Black begged in a hushed voice while she searched the libraryâs premises for Regulus. She ignored him yet again.
âTesoro mio,â Black flirted, both sitting in the common room as she added notes in the werewolf section in her textbook. His new tactic caught her off guard but she prevailed, getting up and leaving.
âTalk to me,â Black whined. âPlease.â She ignored him, continuing to walk to class calmly and held her head high. She just left the hospital wing and Black was trailing her.
But he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into a nearby broom closet and closed the door.
âGet off of me!â She nearly screamed. Thankfully, he was smart enough to keep a healthy distance away. She kept her hands balled into a fist, preventing herself from taking one of the dust brooms and smashing it on his head.
âSorry! But you wonât talk to me any other way!â
Darkness enclosed them, only the light seeping through the cracks of the old wooden door illuminated Black as every ounce of restrengthen was pushed to the edge.
A flurry of apologies fell from his lips but she wouldnât have it. Simply looking bored at her nails and tapping her foot against the ground.
âI know youâre mad â you have every right to be! I get that, I understand.â
âThen leave me alone?â She jeered sarcastically, handing grazing the doorknob.
âWait! Please, just hear me out â let me explain ââ
âExplain what?â She lashed out through gritted teeth. âYou should count your stars that you donât have an attempted murder charge.â
Her heart thumped rather fast and would have been distressing had she not been controlled by anger. Everything was overshadowed by a grim penumbra sweeping over them, closing in on her and Black and it wasnât because of the lack of light in the dingy closet.
She was revolted by him. Sick of seeing his sad face, moping around the hospital wing or looking at her or the other Marauders in yearning.
âDo you think Iâll care about what you want to say?â
âIâm sorry.â
âApology not accepted, dipshit.â
His head bowed. âI deserved that.â âYou think?â
âItâs just that ââ
Her temper spiked to the highest level and her hand drifted to her back pocket and grazed the tip of her wand.
âI ââ
Something in her snap. âShut up. Shut up! Stop trying to defend yourself! Stop it! I donât want to hear it!â
Black was visibly shutting down. âPlease, just calm downâŠâ
And then everything poured out.
âCalm down? Calm down?! I gave â I put my trust in you and you immediately ran with it, breaking it twice and then broke everyone elseâs! How am I supposed to talk to you like everythingâs okay? I get that you donât like me, that you donât like Snape, but really? What do you not understand?!â
He was nodding his head, taking it, never once trying to defend himself. His head hung similar to a child being scolded, hands curled around himself.
âYou must have never cared for them.â
Black went oddly still. âThat's a bold lie and you know that.â
âDo I?â She ridiculed. âDo you want to know the funny part? I was starting to care for you. Apparently, you never did.â
âThatâs not true.â
There, a flicker of rage. Finally a reaction other than pathetic regret and guilt. Something cold crept into his eyes, hardening and entirely stormy and silver, reminding her of last year where they constantly fought. But then, it was washed away with a blink.
âI was nothing but a toy to you!â
âY/N...â
âYou. Never. Cared. About ââ
âStop it! Of course I ââ
ââ Me. Or. The. Other ââ
ââ fucking cared ââ
ââ Marauders ââ â â about you!â
Her eyes stung with bitter unshed, frustrated tears and her throat burned, constricting together. Emotions she hadnât taken a moment to consider hit her within seconds and everything was too overwhelming.
The material of her shirt suddenly turned itchy. Her skin was too tight and she felt herself rock back and forth in a way to calm down.
For a moment, she thought he wouldnât answer as it fell silent but she struck a nerve.
âStop saying that!â He shouted. Now not breaking her stare and took a step forward.
âYouâre fucking selfish. You betrayed them.â A step forward.
âYou only cared about yourself.â Black shook his head. Another step forward.
âIf you ever cared about me â about anyone else youâve hurt â you wouldnât have done⊠that.â A step forward.
They were the closest they had been in months. Their breaths were laboured and ragged. Being that close to him raised all the hairs on her neck in a way she used to love but now hated herself for.
The very notion made her nauseous. Disgusted.
She missed him. Truly. It was such a profound hurt and longing that ran deeper than wanting a quick snog or shag. But that was her problem that she was going to have to hide, bury in an air-sealed chest and throw away.
He opened his mouth and he leant forward inappreciably. But whatever words he was about to spew, he stopped himself. She could feel his breath fan her face, both of their chest raised and fell rapidly.
They stayed like that for a while and she held back from crying, feeling her heart pound in her chest.
âIs there anything else you want to say?â He asked dejectedly.
Why did you have to be so stupid? We couldâve⊠you couldâve had everything.
Do you miss me?
Did you ever care, even a little?
âThis time,â her voice was no louder than a rustle, âI mean it. I hate you. Truly.â
Lie.
Black gave her one last glance through heavy, desolate, half-lidded eyes, closing them shut. âTi voglio bene.â
Her frown doubled, wondering if he mocked her. Why did he always do that?
âAt least youâre consistent in one thing.â
She slipped out, her hand on the door and cracked it open, leaving him there.
âBeing a fucking liar.â
She slammed the door shut with so much violence that it made a couple of bystanders passing by yelp and stare. The shattering of glass from within the closet echoed and it made her breathless.
She had to lean against the stone wall, her body buzzing and numb from the adrenaline.
Sometimes everything in her life seemed so⊠random. What if everything could have been avoided? One simple word, maybe if she said something different, or did something different, would the outcome have been better? Or worse?
What if she had two parents? What if she had been raised by a loving mother? Would she have been that hurt by his actions if opening up was less⊠impossible?
What ifsâŠ
She stumbled her way to class mindlessly, horribly late. The floorboards creaked, cutting Slughorn off while she lurked in the doorway. The teacherâs head, along with everyone else in the room, snapped up.
Lily looked at her worriedly and concern was written in every inch of her face. James had a double-take and became alarmed while Marlene on the other side of the class looked around nervously.
âSorry Iâm late.â
âNo worries, mâgirl!â Slughorn smiled. âPlease, take the seat next to⊠Severus! Now, I was saying, I have a small tradition Iâd like to do every year with my students.â
Y/N didnât even interject; too drained after what happened and sat by Snape.
âCan anyone tell me what this is?â The professor held up a tiny bottle. âOr can anyone tell me what Felix Felicis is?â
Lily raised her hand, casting a concerned gaze to her before answering. From the corner of her eye, she could see Barty and Avery, along with a few other students whispering to each other as Lily spoke; all of them forcing down a smile. Y/N vaguely sensed herself prickle.
âItâs known as Liquid Luck. As the name suggests, it makes the drinker lucky.â
âBeautiful answer! Quite right! Ten points for Gryffindor! Now, whoever brews the Draught of Living Death the closest will win this prize at the end of this lesson. Off you go!â
The class was scurrying off quickly while she made her way around leisurely. Snapeâs sopophorous bean had been hitting her multiple times.
âWould you fucking ââ she grabbed the bean with her hands and threw it at Snape and he hissed at. âJust take your knife blade and squeeze it down on the side with your dagger.â
Snape scoffed. âThatâs not going to work you d ââ
Snape shut up immediately as she crushed the bean with a sharp knife and flicked the juice into the cauldron.
âNow stop hitting me or Iâll pour your potion on the ground.â
Snapeâs attention wasnât on her, instead of trying to decipher her scribbles before taking her book away from his eyesight. She hit him with her book.
She completed the rest of the potion with ease. Snape was nearly done with his potion, she could tell he was on the right path before Slughorn sauntered around the classroom to observe the students. At Jamesâ cauldron, he made no comment but instead helped stir his potion. Lily was given an approving nod, announcing to the class that she earned Gryffindor a few house points until making his way over to their table, peering into the cauldrons. At Snapeâs concoction, he gave a bright smile and opened his mouth until he saw hers and a look of pure delight spread over him, his hands clapping together.
âOho! Excellent! Miss L/N has done it! We have our winner!â
A small round of claps went around meanwhile James and Marlene cheered loudly, effectively embarrassing her.
âShow off,â Snape sneered. She ignored him.
Once the bell rang, Slughorn called her over to collect her vial of Liquid Luck. She slipped the bottle into her pocket for safekeeping.
But before she left, she stopped and spun around. âProfessor Slughorn?â
âYes?â
âI read in my Advanced Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook, but I found that thereâs no Potion to help Werewolves. I was wondering if thatâs still true? I know books can be outdated.â
Slughorn gave her a pensive look. âI think thatâs a matter for Madam Pomfrey. Is there a reason why?â
âItâs just ââ She made up a lie quickly. âIâm nervous about NEWTs and how Iâll do in my studies and itâs merely an interest.â
âOh, my girl! You are excellent. By far one of the best students Iâve ever had. You donât need to worry!â Slughorn cheered. Slughorn seemed genuine and she smiled at the praise. âAnd for your question, no. Sadly there isnât.â
âAt all?â
Slughorn thought for a while. âIf I recall, there have been recent developments with stewed Mandrakes. Itâs rumoured to help lycanthrope individuals ease their way back into the original human state.â
Y/N stored the newfound information in her head. She thanked him, turning to leave until calling out again. Slughorn twirled his head.
âI was wondering if I could practice more â like I said, Iâm nervous about my NEWTs.â
There wasnât even a delay and Slughorn beamed. âOf course! As long as you clean up after yourself, you may come and go as you please. Iâll make sure to leave the doors open until curfew.
âOh! Iâm planning to host another Slugclub dinner soon, I expect you to be there?â
â... Of course, sir.â

Translations:
Tesoro mio = My treasure or 'honey'
Ti voglio bene = 'I love you' but its not like what you think. It's more of an unconditional and selfless love that means 'I want you to be well.' It places an emphasis on the tender and affectionate feelings you have for the other person. It's the safer option to say to your significant other if it's a very new relationship.

November 2020
The second the photos broke, I lost it.Â
Harry wearing a wedding ring on the set of his new film sent me reeling in a pit of lust and wanting unlike any other. I spent my entire afternoon clenching my thighs together and avoiding small talk with coworkers. I was meant to fly out on Friday afternoon to visit him for the weekend, but I was struggling to hold it together. The wedding band on his finger was taunting me from two thousand miles away and I was caving. Anna had no problem with me disappearing a little early, so long as I had my laptop with me and my articles submitted.Â
My flight was switched for Thursday morning instead of Friday evening as originally planned. I had to jump through some hoops to ensure no one actually saw me entering JFK or leaving LAX. Having pap photos taken of me would certainly ruin my surprise. I spent too much time hatching my plan for a group of sleazy men with cameraâs to ruin it.Â
âWhy are you dressed like that?â Harry rubbed at his eyes, his voice scratchy and his brain groggy due to the early hour. âYou look like youâre going on a run.â
âIâm doing a bunch of errands for Anna today, so I decided to dress casual.â I shrugged, shifting around in my private lounge seat at the airport. âIâm waiting for a friend of hers to get off their flight before I take them into the office.â
âThought you were hopping on your flight a little early to surprise me.â He pouted, his eyes shining under the dim lighting. âMade my heart race a little.â
âI wish I could, darling.â I said softly. âI miss you so much already and itâs barely been two weeks.â
âI know, it sucks.â He inhaled sharply, shaking his head. âOnly one more sleep and then weâll be together for the weekend.â
âI canât wait, squid.â I said softly. âIâll talk to you later today, okay? Donât be upset if I canât answer a text or anything, Iâll be so busy with Annaâs errands-â
âSâalright, honey.â He gave me a reassuring smile. âIâll be on set so I might not be able to text as often either.â
âAlright.â I said. âI love you.â
âI love you.â He blew a kiss to the camera and I caught it, pressing my fingers to my cheek with a soft giggle. âHave a great day, honey.â
âYou too, squid.â
After I hung up with Harry, I jumped into planning mode.Â
I already had the address to the rental house and a copy of the key. Harry had sent it to me the moment he got one himself just in case I ever wanted to come visit. We both knew that flight times and his filming schedule might not line up perfectly, so it didnât hurt to have a key just in case I had to drive from LAX to Palm Springs on my own. I planned on stopping at the Malibu house to steal Roxanne from the garage. It would take me two hours and a half hours to get from Malibu to Palm Springs once I finally started my solo road trip.Â
As I switched over to a calming playlist that Harry made for me on my birthday, I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths.Â
I knew that it would be a fun trip, but I could only hope that Harry really liked his surprise.Â
                     ****************************
The sun was beating down on my bare legs as I leaned against Roxanne.Â
I anxiously twirled the set of keys around my perfectly painted fingernails. I picked one of the most infamous shades from the 1950âs to match my hair, makeup, and outfit. I rubbed my painted lips together nervously, taking a shuddery breath as I watched the gate of the production set carefully. I thought that it was going to open four times before, but no one had stumbled off set yet.Â
They were all set to do a two hour lunch break today and that gave me plenty of time to do what I wanted with Harry back in his rental home. I spent most of my time getting ready there, following several tutorials on vintage hair and makeup before I dressed in my adorable outfit. It was something I saw on a show about a female comedian in the fifties. I adored her style throughout the whole show, but I really loved this outfit on me.Â
It was a pair of black and white check shorts with a matching, three quarter sleeve blazer. I went through Harryâs closet, in search of his ivory silk shirt that Iâd seen him wear in a pap photo years ago, to add a little special touch to the outfit. It had his last name stitched on the pocket to compliment the fake wedding ring Iâd slipped on my finger.Â
That was the part I was nervous about.Â
I didnât want him to think that I was insane for finding a piece of costume jewelry to match his own fake wedding ring. I got the idea on the flight over from New York, my mind racing with ideas and scenarios to play out. I ultimately decided that if he could torture me with a wedding ring, then I could torture him with one.Â
The gate finally opened as I started to contemplate picking my nails, a loud screeching sound pulling me from my thoughts as I gripped the keys to the benz in my hand tightly.
Florence was the first out, and while I was delighted to meet the girl who was spending so much time with my boyfriend, I didnât care to meet her just yet. I watched her turn back, letting out a charming giggle as my boyfriend followed suite behind her. Olivia Wilde was next, a bag on her shoulder and a wide smile on her face. A few other familiar faces trailed out after Harry, and suddenly, my nerves had skyrocketed. A lot of famous people were about to see me in a classic fifties get up with a car scarf around my curls and my legs exposed.Â
My nerves were soothed for just a moment as I looked at Harryâs freshly cut hair, slicked back in a style that I thought I would hate on him. As per usual, he looked like a daydream. My breath caught in my throat when he looked over at me, his eyes growing wide and a smirk pulling at the corner of his lips. Florence caught on to his line of sight, following his gaze until her eyes landed on me. I gave him a quick wave as everyone else turned to look at me and I felt my face grow hot. He pressed a quick kiss to Oliviaâs cheek and then Florenceâs before jogging my way.Â
âWhat the hell is all this?â He gripped my elbow gently, leaning down to press his lips to mine with a wide smile. âBeatrice, you look so good.â
âI know.â I hummed against his lips, brushing my fingers over his cheek. âHi.â
âHiya, honey.â He cooed, wrapping his arms around me. âFuck me, youâre gorgeous.â
âI thought Iâd do a little something to surprise you.â I wrapped my arms around his neck, tossing my head back when he pulled the scarf from my head. âHarry!âÂ
âYou did your hair and makeup, too?â He kissed my cheek. âCome on, I want you to meet Olivia and Florence. Theyâre going to love this.â
âI donât want her to think Iâm mocking her movie.â I glanced down at Harry, causing him to frown slightly. âI did it because I knew you would love it and I had a lot of fun dressing up, but I donât want to offend her.â
âYou wonât.â He reassured me. âSheâll probably make you an extra.â
âShut up.â I rolled my eyes as he pouted. âFine, Iâll go over there.â
âThank you.â He set me down, grabbing my hand before tugging me along.Â
âOlivia, Florence,â Harry glanced back at me with a giddy grin. âThis is my girlfriend, Beatrice.â
âHello,â I stuck my hand out between us and they both went for a shake. âItâs really nice to meet yâall.â
âYou too.â Florence beamed back at me with a smile that was almost as bright as the sun. âI just want to thank you for letting me borrow your boyfriend. Heâs such a lovely person and a dream to work with.â
âTry baking with him, youâll change your mind.â I squeezed Harryâs hand, letting out a soft chuckle. âHeâs like a toddler when he gets in the kitchen.â
âI canât imagine him in an apron.â Olivia laughed. âWe have to see that.â
âI have pictures, Iâll make sure to give him a framed one for his trailer.â I pressed my lips together as Harry squeaked out.Â
âAlright, I didnât think youâd all gang up on me.â He said playfully. âI wanted to show you off and here you are, teasing me for baking.â
âIâm teasing you because you steal the batter on a spoon, not because youâre baking. I love baking with you.â I bumped my hip into his, smiling up at him. âBut Iâve got to keep you grounded, donât I? Your head will inflate and Iâll have to tie a cinder block to your foot to keep you from floating off.âÂ
âHaha, youâre so funny.â He scrunched his nose up and I tossed my head back, letting out a loud laugh. âAnyways, what do you think of her outfit?â
âOh, Harry, donât-â
âIt looks great, actually.â Olivia said. âDid I see that on the set of the Marvelous Mrs. Masiel?âÂ
âYeah, you did.â I nodded. âI love that show and all of her outfits so much.â
âIt looks adorable on you.â Florence said. âYou work for Vogue, donât you?âÂ
âYeah.â I nodded. âI did a piece with one of your Little Women co-stars not too long ago, actually.â
âI thought you seemed familiar.â She exclaimed. âYou came on set one day, didnât you?â
âI did.â I nodded. âIt was an honest to god, out of body experience for me. I loved Little Women so much as a girl. I seriously wanted to change my name to Josephine after reading it.â
âAnd then the film was so bloody amazing!â Florence exclaimed. âHarry, why have you kept her away from us for so long?â
âSânot my fault she has a job.â He rolled his eyes, chortling playfully. âI tried to convince her that being a housewife was much more fun, but I think she read the script and decided against it.â
âYeah, I sure did.â I laughed softly alongside Olivia and Florence. âWe should do dinner or something this weekend. I donât know if you all have plans, but Harryâs rental house has a table that seats like, eight people.â
âThat sounds wonderful.â Olivia said. âJust let us know the details and Iâll pass it along to the other main actors.â
âSounds great.â Harry said. âWell, Iâm going to steal my girl away if you donât mind. Iâll see you in two hours?â
âSee you then, Harry.â Florence waved before she took off in the direction of her car. âBye, Beatrice!â
âBye, Florence.â I waved back at her with a giggle before turning to Olivia. âIt was really lovely to meet you. Iâll make sure to get him back in time.â
âThank you.â She laughed. âHave a great lunch, you two.âÂ
âThanks.â Harry and I said at the same time.Â
When Olivia was gone, Harry looked down at me with a smirk.Â
âDo I get to fuck you now?â He asked, his dimple popping out.Â
âIt depends.â I said slowly. âWould you, by chance, like to partake in a little role play?â
âIt depends.â He said back. âWhat do you have in mind?â
I walked forward, smoothing my hands over his t-shirt covered chest. I pressed up on my toes, bringing my lips as close to his ears as I could get them.Â
âDo you still have your wedding ring from set?â
               ********************************************
âHoney!â I heard Harryâs voice from where I was lounging on the sofa, a magazine draped over my thighs. âIâm home.â
I smiled, flipping through my magazine without actually paying attention to it.Â
I heard Harryâs footsteps moments later, his dress shoes tapping along the concrete floor of the house. I tilted my head up when he moved in front of me, his eyes trailing over my body.Â
âYou look comfortable.â He said, reaching for my magazine with two fingers. âYou didnât answer when I called out for you.â
âSorry, darling,â I hummed out when he pressed his lips to mine. âI was invested in an article.â
âYou and your articles.â He breathed against my lips. âItâs been ages since Iâve seen you. Are you just going to sit there?â
âI was planning on it, sweet pea.â I brushed my thumb over his bottom lip. âIâm relaxing my feet.â
âNow, Iâve been gone on business for six days, honey. I would like the chance to properly greet my beautiful wife.â He smirked, setting his briefcase to the coffee table behind him.Â
âMr. Styles,â I twisted my legs off the couch, standing up between the furniture and Harry. âI donât know what youâre insinuating, but Iâve got far too much to get done today. Iâve still got grocery shopping to do and well, I have to call your Mother.â
âI have a better plan, doll.â He roughly gripped my hips, his fingers digging into my sides harshly as he yanked me against his chest. âHow about we sneak off for a little afternoon delight?âÂ
âHarry Styles, I donât think so.â I mocked offense, swatting his shoulder. âIâm far too busy.â
âMake time for your husband, honey.â He cooed, brushing his knuckles against my cheek gently before he gripped my chin. âMake love with your husband.âÂ
âMr. Styles, you do drive a hard bargain.â I whispered, my breath catching in my throat as our eyes connected in a lustful gaze. âI do have something Iâve been wanting to show you.â
âMrs. Styles, what have you been up to while daddyâs been away?â He hummed out as his lips brushed against my red painted lips. âHave you been naughty?âÂ
âNo,â I smirked. âIâve been an angel.â
âProve it.â He whispered moments before our lips collided.Â
He kissed me just like they did in the old movies, his body wrapping around mine. I moaned against him when I felt his tongue slip over my own, giving me a taste of what I had been craving for two weeks now. I let out a giggle and then a squeak of surprise when I felt his hands under my bum, lifting me up into his arms. I wrapped my legs around him, holding on tight as he walked us from the living room towards the bedroom. He dropped me on the bed before grabbing my right ankle, holding my leg up as my ankle rested on his shoulder.Â
âThese heelsâŠâ He started to fiddle with the clasp, finally pulling the strap loose before he slipped it off. âTheyâre new.â
âJust bought them.â I gripped the duvet under my fingers. âDo you like them?âÂ
âYes.â He kissed my ankle before gently resting my right leg on the bed. âDid you buy them with daddyâs money?âÂ
âI did.â I bit my lower lip as my core clenched, my walls fluttering at his tone. âI bought them for you.â
âYou didnât even ask daddy before you bought them.â He tutted, reaching for my left ankle. âYouâre getting bold.â
âI just wanted to surprise you.â I said.Â
âIâm very surprised.â He gave me a soft wink, one that let me know my Harry was still in this version of him that weâd quickly created in the car.Â
A business man with a daddy kink in the 1950âs that wanted to knock his wife up after a long business trip. It was a simple plot, but it combined quite a few kinks into one scenario, so we didnât really mind. I giggled when he reminded me that daddy was a common nickname in that time period, something girls called their husbands in a provocative setting.Â
When both of my heels were off, Harry brushed his hands up my bare thighs until they landed on my hips. He gently guided me towards the center of the bed before kneeling over me. I lifted both hands up, cupping his cheeks as he leaned down to kiss my lips.Â
âMrs. Styles,â He hummed out. âIâve been thinking?â
âAbout what, Mr. Styles?â I pressed my lips over his cheek, sliding my fingers towards the back of his neck.Â
âI think itâs been quite lonely around here.â He said. âI canât imagine youâre enjoying all of this time alone when Iâm away on business.âÂ
âI get by just fine.â I said softly, dropping my head back to the mattress. âDo you want to get a dog, Harry? Is that what this is about?â
âI donât want to get a dog, darling.â He chuckled, brushing his nose over mine. âI want a baby.â
âA baby?â My eyes grew wide. âIsnât it a bit soon, darling? Weâve only been married for five months.âÂ
âThatâs more than enough time, doll.â He whined. âI want us to have a beautiful little baby to love and to dote on. I want to show her off in front of my friends and my family-â
âOh, Mr. Styles.â I sighed, shaking my head. âDonât you know Iâd do anything for you, darling.â
âIs that a yes?â He smirked, his eyes lighting up.
âYes.â I gasped out when he rutted his hips forward. âPlease.â
He wasted no time, stripping me from my blazer and then my tiny shorts. He tossed them aside carelessly, his hands falling to the buttons on the silk shirt that I had stolen from our closet.Â
âSâthis mine?â He glanced up at me with a confused smirk. âHavenât seen this in ages.â
âSâyours.â I nodded, holding the lapel to the side to show off his name. âSâgot your name on it and everything.â
âCheeky girl.â He cooed out, dropping his head to press a kiss to my stomach. âItâs our name.â
I let out a low whine in the back of my throat, shifting my hips as Harry made it to the last button towards the top of the dress shirt. I watched his face carefully as he pushed it to the side, his eyes scanning the black, vintage set that I had purchased for today.Â
âYouâre trying to kill me.â He gasped out as his fingers brushed over the skin of my stomach to my breasts. âFuckingâŠ.I canât take this anymore. I need to be inside of you.â
âThen get inside of me, Mr. Styles.â I lifted my legs, spreading them apart slightly so he could see the cut out area on the crotch of the panties. âYou donât even have to take everything off.â
Harryâs eyes were on mine, burning a dark shade of emerald as he licked over his bottom lip. I giggled when he started to unbuckle his trousers, tanking the zipper down before he tucked his hand in. He pulled his cock out, giving it a few firm strokes before he hovered his body over mine. Seconds later, I felt the stretch of my walls around his cock, causing my body to tense.
âThereâs my girl.â He grunted out, pushing himself in as far as he could possibly go before pressing a few, sloppy kisses to my face. âSo snug around me, arenât you?â
âHarry.â I dropped my hands to his back, digging my nails into the cotton of his shirt as he pulled out slowly. Seconds later, he was pushing back in and I was gasping for air. âFuck, thatâs nice.â
âMrs. Styles, you have such a filthy mouth.â He smeared his lips over mine before both of his hands found their home by my ears. âWho taught you to talk like that?âÂ
âYou.â I let out a breathless chuckle that quickly faded as the tip of his cock massaged my g-spot.Â
âYeah?â His eyelids fluttered shut as he continued to work his hips in a steady rhythm. âNo other blokes have been hanginâ round here?âÂ
âNone.â I shook my head as my nails drug down to his lower back and eventually to his bum. I pushed my fingers down his pants, digging my nails into the flesh there. âJust you.â
âYouâre my girl.â He gritted out as a single curl fell to his forehead. âOnly mine.â
âOnly yours.â I whimpered, biting at my lower lip. âYou feel so good, Harry.âÂ
âCanât wait to see you pregnant, honey.â He let out a whine of his own, clenching his eyes. âItâs gonna be so beautiful, seeing you round and full while you carry my baby..â
âI want it so bad, Harry.â
âAnd after this baby,â He let out a strangled moan, delivering another sharp thrust that had me gasping. âIâm gonna put another one in you, and then another.âÂ
âPlease, I want it.â I nodded, sliding my fingers back up his back. âWant you closer.â
He pressed his body into mine, his hips moving in desperate thrusts and his pelvis applying pressure to my clit with each move. I tossed my head back, silently asking for his lips to press against my throat. I felt him latch on as his thrust started to get sloppier. I knew that he was close by the little whines pulling from his throat and the puffs of air hitting my skin.Â
Harryâs hand slipped between our bodies in no time, rubbing my clit with an urgency that Iâd never experienced before with him. I felt my body flush warm and my walls tighten around him as he delivered three final thrusts. We both cried out when he spilled into me, filling my walls with his cum until it dripped out onto the black panties still settled onto my hips.Â
âYou bought yourself a ring?â our chests were both heaving, his body still pressed into mine.Â
I tried to let out a giggle, but he was heavy against my body and it came out wheezy.Â
âItâs costume jewelry.â I brushed my hand over his back. âJust thought it would be fun after I saw you wearing that ring on set. I saw the pictures online and they nearly killed me.â
âMhm, youâre just trying to seduce me into proposing earlier than I planned.â He lifted his head, pressing his lips against mine in a sweet kiss. âHello, honey.â
âHiya, darling.â I lifted my hand, tugging gently on the curl that fell over forehead with a fond smile. âI love you.â
âLove you, too.â He whispered. âI love you and everything you do for me. I donât tell you enough how much I appreciate you for being the best girlfriend out there.â
âHarry-âÂ
âDonât deflect or play it down,â He said sternly. âI mean every word from the bottom of my heart, Beatrice. I...no one else on set has had a spouse or partner come visit them on the weekends. No one else had flowers sent to their trailer or daily facetime calls and inspirational messages. You make me feel so loved and so special on a daily basis and that means the world to me. So thank you for being you, honey. I love you with all of my heart.â
âI love you, too.â I sniffled, blinking rapidly as a few tears fell down my temples, into my hair. âI hope you liked your surprise. I didnât want to freak you out, but I thought it would be fun.â
âIt was.â He brushed his nose over mine. âIt was a lot of fun, actually. I think we should mess around like that more often.â
âNot too often, though.â I chuckled. âOne of these days, Iâll actually end up pregnant.âÂ
âWheatâs wrong with that?â He hummed out.Â
âOne step at a time, darling.â I patted his shoulder. âOh, just so you know, we wonât be having a girl first.â
âExcuse me?â Harry hissed when I pushed at his shoulders, causing him to slip out of my walls. I guided him to his back before I climbed on top of him, pressing my palms to his tummy. âI donât...what?âÂ
âYou said âherâ earlier, but weâre having a boy first.â I said casually. âI know it.â
âHow do you know it?â He chuckled as his brows creased. âDid you make a deal with Stevie at one of her witch things?âÂ
âI didnât need to make a deal, I just know it.â I patted his cheek. âGonna name him Ellis.â
âWhy Ellis?â He tilted his head to the side. âWhere did you hear that?âÂ
âEllis Island.â I smiled. âWe took our first vacation together in New York and the ferry to Ellis Island was one of my favorite parts of that trip. Itâs a piece of our history.â
âI love that.â He said softly. âI love you.âÂ
âI love you, too.â I giggled, leaning forward to press my lips against his. âRound two?âÂ
âWhy, Mrs. Styles, I like the way you think.â

hi hello i dont think we have talked b4 but i would love 2 hear ur craig ND headcanonz :))
hehe hello!! thank you for the asks!! here's my ND craig headcanons aka me projecting onto one of my kins :>
note? ig: im diagnosed with adhd buuuut i probably also have undiagnosed autism and idk how to separate those symptoms tbh so im not gonna be too specific about what's what ig. this truly will just be Pure Projection soooo
let's go!
-was absolutely that one kid growing up that got either "never applies himself" or "has good grades, but issues with socialization" on report cards
-bad at making and maintaining friendships :/
-school probably tested him and was like "yeah there is something here but we arent gonna diagnose bc that means we have to give him Actual Accommodations" and then stuck him in SPED classes which just got him bullied ajsksk
-has bad sensory issues with like. the feeling of skin and the sound of like silverware on plates, it literally makes him wanna peel his skin off. there's other ones obvs but those ones are the worst
-sensory overload makes him incredibly agitated or just downright pissed. gets very snippy but doesn't yell bc yelling feels Weird and he doesn't like it
-cant wear more than 2 layers, cant sleep with more than one thin blanket, it makes him feel like he's being suffocated and having his movement restricted
-always stimming but pretty good at making it unnoticeable, has a lot of normalized stims like playing with rubber bands, leg bouncing nail tapping, cracking knuckles, etc.
-but when he isnt trying to hide it? ohhh boy is he a loud motherfucker, very into stims that involve noise like rolling his r's, doin lil brr sounds, clickn buttons on like remotes and stuff, etc.
-not very good at masking tbh
-mmm echolalia galore
-flappy hands!! lots of flappy hands :]
-stims by hitting the balls of his hands/wrists together repeatedly, is probably one of his most used stims
-has like. harmful stims when he's upset or in pain? like hitting himself, scratching himself, etc.
-has lil dancey stims but only really does them in private or around close friends
-so flipping people off is already basically a stim in canon lbr but imagine he starts doing đđ as a joke and then it just becomes a Default Stim. he jus be standing there and outta nowhere he's goin đđ while having a completely normal conversation
-very bad at reading tone and social cues but he just wont admit it. refuses to ask questions either. leads to a lot of bad situations but he'd rather die than ask for clarification
-if you don't tell him exactly what to do he will just kinda. be confused. like you need to give him a step by step tutorial otherwise he will not do something very obvious on his own just incase he's wrong
-low empathy my beloathed /hj
-uhhh pls dont put him in a situation to comfort someone he will say and do all the wrong things even if he's trying his best
-red racer hyperfixation <3 guinea pig hyperfixation <3
-the most dry texter known to man bc he refuses to have important conversations over text due to Lack Of Tone Indication (his friends would be an exception bc tone indicators pog but still greatly prefers irl)
-its the having multiple swears as stimmy words for me /hj
-walks while leaning on the outside of his feet more than having them like. level? if that makes sense. similar to toe walking but like on the sides of the feet
-dont ask him to read a book he'll either hyperfixate or end up rereading the same page over and over again bc he retained nothing
-very blunt but he's not trying to be mean he just has literally no idea how to Not talk like that
-does a lil high picthed mm sound when happy flapping and usually rocks back and forth with it :]
-will be in the middle of the test and you'll just hear him softly muttering "bonk. bonk. bonk. bonk. bon-"
-that ^ or bababooey
-basically any tiktok sound he hates turns into a stim at some point
-has a playlist just titled "neurodivergent moment" bc he's that kind of person. the first song on it is the home of 47, followed by stupid mf (idk if the person who made the home of 47 ((trolleycat)) can reclaim the r slur but it's used a good amount in the song, stupid mf is just blatantly ableist tho lol)
-*info dumps by tearing apart his favorite media and then gets offended when a NT does the exact same thing*
-calls things ableist when they dont go his way
-has a lot of oral stims like give him anything he can chew on and he will fucking destroy it unless it's made to be chewed
-*sees strings on hat* *sticks end in mouf* *complains when its soaking wet 2 minutes later*
-hyperfixates on a lot of problematic media so he has become the most critical ass mfer when it comes to the shit he consumes
-sometimes he just. screams. bc he can. and he feels the need to.
-has rsd but shhh he'll never discuss it

Wondrous Creature (Branjie) - Athena2
Summary:Â Brooke and Vanessa are roommates crushing on each other, both with no idea that the other likes them back, or that the other isnât human.
A/N:Â I am officially in the spooky mood and finished this to celebrate it! This is loosely based on the web comic âFangsâ by Sarah C. Andersen. This is pretty weird and chaotic, so apologies in advance. I would love any feedback or comments if you have any, though! Writ is the best beta and brainstorming partner and I love them. Title from Monster by Florence + the Machine.
read on ao3
âBrooke!â Vanessa sighs in relief when her roommate shuffles in, tossing her purse on the kitchen table, shoulders dropping after her overnight shift.
âWhat?â Brooke asks around a yawn.
âHave you seen my black boots?â Vanessaâs been sliding around the apartment in her pizza socks, toothbrush dangling from her mouth, because her boots are not in her closet where sheâs fairly sure she left them. But if anyone will know where they are, itâs Brooke. She could find anything from boots to keys like a bloodhound.
Brookeâs eyebrows wrinkle as she thinks. âDid you check under your bed?â
âOh!â Toothpaste flies out of her mouth and splats on the floor, and Brooke rolls her eyes fondly before wiping it.
âYouâd lose your head if it wasnât attached to you,â Brooke mutters.
âI know!â Vanessa runs to her room and peeks under her bed. There, past Rileyâs elephant chew toy and her old knee brace and a bag of chips, are her black boots.
Vanessa happily puts them on, and Brooke snorts behind her.
âYou could make a game out of finding stuff under your bed,â Brooke teases. âTwo points for clothes, three points for food.â
âFive points if the food is still edible.â
âVanessa, donât you dare eat those chipsââ
Vanessa removes her toothbrush and crunches as loud as she can, making eye contact with Brooke all the while. Even with the lingering minty taste, the chips are still good. But even if they werenât, she still wouldnât be harmed, for reasons Brooke doesnâtâand canâtâknow.
âOkay, how about you brush your teeth for real, in the bathroom?â Brooke suggests, and Vanessa nods.
They stand side-by-side in front of the sink, because Brooke brushes her teeth after work every morning for some reason. Vanessa doesnât mind. Itâs nice having the bathroom to herself for most of the morning, not having to fight for shower times or counter space. This little routine is enough, and Vanessa likes the rhythm they sink into, the way Brooke sways along to Vanessaâs Get-Ready Spotify playlist, the way Brooke grins at her in the mirror. Today, the grin is wider than normal, and Vanessaâs grip slips, toothbrush swiping across her cheek and sending Brooke into a fit of laughter.
They spit in the sink, and Vanessa sees drops of bright red clinging to the porcelain.
âYouâre bleeding,â Vanessa says.
âI am?â Brooke shrugs. âMustâve brushed too hard.â She rinses the sink, tells Vanessa to have a good day, and collapses into bed, the frame squeaking under her weight. Sheâll get a few hours of sleep, Vanessa knows, before waking up and writing. She does fashion and news pieces for some media siteâshe told Vanessa itâs like a low-budget Buzzfeedâand her stuffâs pretty good, from what Vanessaâs looked up on nights she was bored, desperate to have more of Brooke through words on her phone screen. Brooke likes her job, even if she has to work overnight grocery store shifts to keep herself afloat. Vanessa thinks of Brooke curled up in bed and wishes she could help her sleep more, get rid of those gray circles constantly under her eyes.
But Vanessa will be late soon, and she grabs her travel coffee mug and heads to work, thinking too much about Brookeâs smile and the blood in the sink.
Maybe she isnât the only one in the apartment with secrets.
â
Brooke wakes around 2 with both cats sprawled across her legs. She sits up and pets them absent-mindedly; the cats had to stay in her room because Vanessa is super allergic, âsneezinâ and wheezinâ and itchinâ allergic, Mary,â in her words. Itâs easier for everyone to just keep the cats sequestered to Brookeâs room; she gets to cuddle them more, and everyone gets to avoid Vanessaâs sneezes, which are loud enough to send small children running in fright.
She pulls out her laptop and checks her work emails, making notes for her new piece. Nina runs the media siteâWestâs Best, home to culture, fashion, humor, and more, according to the description Brooke wroteâand Brooke is one of her best writers. But in the name of Brookeâs secret, she lets Vanessa think sheâs an underpaid intern, scraping for any piece she can get. She doesnât like lying, but itâs a necessary evil; under the cover of her âovernight job,â sheâs free to spend her nights with her friends, doing things Vanessa canât ever know.
The blood this morning was a rare slip-upâa remnant from last nightâs drink. Brooke has to be more careful. Itâs been six months since Vanessa moved in, and Brooke knows she doesnât suspect anything about her being a vampire.
Hiding it isnât as hard as Brooke thought it would be. The overnight job lie takes care of most of it, and Brooke stores her blood supply at Ninaâs, because she doesnât think she could lie her way out of that if Vanessa found it. She keeps stories about her past generic, mentioning that she used to dance but not that the dancing took place in a speakeasy 100 years ago. Or how she rode horses sometimes as a kid, leaving out that they were an actual mode of transportation. Sheâs sure Vanessa doesnât mind the lack of details; her own stories are over the top enough for both of them, making Brooke laugh until her stomach hurts.
So no, not hard. Just a tiny secret. Though one thatâs growing hard to keep, admittedly, because of another secret.
She has a crush on Vanessa.
The crush is a recent development, though her friends insist Brookeâs had feelings for longer, brought on by Vanessa asking opinions on outfits and nights yelling at reality shows together and all the times Vanessa lets her towel hang a little too low after a shower. Brookeâs never been around someone so fun and lively, who finds joy in something as simple as fresh laundry, burying her face in warm, lavender-scented clothes.
But secret number two has to remain secret because of secret number one, obviously, and Brooke just ignores those feelings. Her heartâs been cold a century, after all; itâs not hard to do.
Her phone buzzes with a text.
Vanessa: Can we make grilled cheese tonight?
Two emojis follow it: a loaf of bread and a wedge of cheese.
Vanessa: Thereâs no grilled cheese emoji but you get the idea
Brooke grins, and she thinks her dead heart skips a beat.
â
âThis is one of the best grilled cheeses Iâve ever had! You could open a grilled cheese food truck,â Vanessa says around a mouthful of bread.
Brooke shakes her head. âSometimes I swear you were raised by wolves.â
Vanessa crosses her arms and pouts indignantly, but thereâs a glimmer in her eyes, like a laugh she wonât let escape.
âJust âcause you drink tea with your pinky curledââ
âI do not.â
âDo so.â
Brooke smiles, taking a bite of her own sandwich. Vampires could eat human food, and Brooke likes to. It just doesnât fill her the way animal blood does. But sheâll make up for it tonight, while Vanessa thinks sheâs at work.
âOh, that vanity you ordered came today,â Brooke says.
âYes!â Vanessa fist-pumps the air. âWanna help me put it together?â
Brooke thinks of the time she helped Nina put together her bedroom set and wound up with a giant splinter in her thumb, a smashed finger from Ninaâs lousy aim with the hammer, and a bag of extra screws that Brooke hopes to this day werenât important (Ninaâs bed hasnât broken yet, so itâs probably fine). Brooke has no desire for furniture-building again, but for Vanessa and those big brown eyesâŠ
âSure,â Brooke says.
Which is how she finds herself nudging aside clothes and magazines on Vanessaâs bedroom floor, Vanessaâs dog licking her leg and 20 pages of instructions fluttering in front of her.
âCome on, Brooke, what do we do?â Vanessa swings a hammer aimlessly, waiting for something to hit.
Brooke frowns, trying to make sense of the instructions and all the pieces and nailsâcould this thing need that many nails?
âUm, I think this big piece goes firstâŠâ Brooke grabs a square of wood and passes it to Vanessa. âThen we put on the sides.â
âWhat about the legs?â
âShit.â
After nearly two hours of reading, Googling, YouTube tutorials, swearing, and Vanessa pretending to be Thor with her hammer, the vanity stands strong and sturdy in the corner.
âWe did it!â Vanessa cheers. âTeamwork makes the dream work, baby!â
âIâm gonna pretend you didnât say that.â
âFair.â Vanessa cackles. âYouâll be okay at work, right? I didnât tire you out too much?â
Brooke swallows hard. Is that gleam in Vanessaâs eyes from concern, or does she know exactly what sheâs saying? Does she have the same feelings Brooke does?
âIâll be fine,â Brooke says.
She doesnât see Vanessa for the rest of the night, and slips out when Vanessa is breathing softly in her bed.
â
The best part of Brookeâs overnight shifts is that sheâs not there to wonder where Vanessa goes at the full moon.
She, Silky, and Aâkeria pile in an Uber and go to the edge of the city, then walk to the woods. Vanessa loves the city, loves all the people and shops and places to eat, but thereâs something about the woods. Everything is calmer out here, still and silent except for the occasional rustling of leaves or an owlâs hoot. Thereâs a sort of peace between the trees, freedom to just breathe and think and be.
The silence is a little too eerie tonight, her thoughts too loud. Or maybe itâs just because she canât stop thinking of Brooke. Thereâs been nothing unusual about the past few weeks, but something feels different. They made cupcakes last week and spent hours on Saturday sucked into a 90 Day Fiance marathon, yelling and roasting the couples. Vanessa found herself enjoying it all more than usual, unable to take her eyes off Brooke. She knows what it means, but thatâs not an option. Not with her secret.
âVanessa, itâs almost time!â Aâkeria yells.
Vanessa snaps up and sees the moon is almost at its highest as it shines through the trees. She pulls off her clothes and sets them in the bag at the base of the largest tree.
âWhatâs with you?â Aâkeria asks in concern.
âNothing.â
âItâs about Brooke, isnât it?â Silky guesses, and she and Aâkeria trade looks.
âWhatâs with the looks?â Vanessa demands.
âItâs nothing,â Aâkeria says.
âWe think Brookeâs a vampire,â Silky says, dodging the furious arm Aâkeria swings at her.
âYou think sheâs a vampire?â Vanessa laughs out loud. She can see where theyâre coming from, admittedly. Brooke is tall and pale and quiet, with a dry sense of humor and a wardrobe thatâs almost entirely black. She can be broody sometimes, especially when Jeopardy! isnât going her way. She glides around the apartment so silently Vanessa wants to put a bell around her neck. And thereâs a mysterious air around her, maybe from how secretive she is about herselfâso much so that Vanessa truly doesnât know much about her past.
But the idea of Brooke being a vampire is ridiculous. Her Netflix recently watched list is just Jane Austen adaptations and The Princess Diaries, and she keeps the freezer stocked with Ben and Jerryâs and pizza bagels, not bags of suspicious liquid or anything like that. Hell, when Vanessa got a paper cut a few weeks ago, Brooke practically flew out of the room to get her a Band-Aid, eyes avoiding the blood. And she uses a baby voice when she talks to her cats and falls asleep cuddling them, for crying out loudâthe woman is hardly a horror movie figure.
âLook, sheâs not a vampire, okay?â Vanessa keeps one eye on the moon as it shifts imperceptibly, her muscles tingling as they prepare for the transformation. âShe goes out in the daytime and stuff.â
Silky rolls her eyes. âVampires can do that! Sun hurts them, but it only kills them after a long time.â
âSheâs fine in the sun,â Vanessa insists. âShe doesnât go out in it much because it gives her a headache and her skinâs really sensitive, so it burns easily.â
âYeah, I donât think thatâs sunburn.â
âAnd an overnight job? Could it be any more obvious?â
Vanessa huffs. âEnough, okay! Sheâs human!â
Silky shakes her head. âYou just donât want to see it because youâre in love with her.â
âI am not!â Vanessa shouts, but she canât even kid herself, let alone her friends, who are staring at her pointedly.
âGot a big old lesbian crush,â Aâkeria says with a grin. âSo big you canât even see your roommateâs a blood sucker.â
Vanessa sighs, knowing that vampire or not, her feelings for Brooke are filling the entire forest. âLook, I really like her, and she probably doesnât feel the same way. It could ruin everything if I tell her. It just⊠it just canât happen.â She shakes off how small her voice is getting.
âI think you should tell her, V,â Aâkeria says softly. âVampire stuff aside and everything. How could she not like you back?â
Vanessa wants to believe it, but she shakes her head. âSheâs my friend, and sheâs human, and Iâmââ The rest of her sentence is cut off by a groan as the pain starts. Vanessaâs gotten used to it nowâthe way her bones stretch and muscles clench, her whole body on fireâbut it doesnât make the pain any easier. She curls into a ball as her claws emerge, as fur sprouts, until finally a thick brown wolf stands tall beneath the moon. Vanessa nods toward the other two, and they traipse through the forest.
Vanessa keeps her mind when she transforms; she normally likes the way everything gets sharper, the way she can smell moss and flowers and animals, can see even the tiniest bugs flapping their wings. Tonight, though, she wishes she could turn it off, because all her thoughts of Brooke are heightened too. The sheer beauty of her soft, smooth skin. The way her hair shines like gold in the light and always smells like tea tree oil. Her rare laughs, the way her shoulders shake with the movement and her green eyes sparkle. How much Vanessa wishes she could see Brookeâs pale skin uninterrupted by clothes, melting into Vanessaâs sheets, before falling asleep in Brookeâs arms.
Vanessa sighs, running through the trees and leaving it all behind.
She really canât be in love with her roommate, but itâs too late.
â
Brooke is extra careful the next few weeks. She rinses her mouth carefully before entering the door each morning. She eats half the garlic bread Vanessa makes one night. She even goes shopping with Vanessa, rare sunshine beating down on them. The only reason Brooke manages without pain is because of the special sunscreen her witch friend Yvie made, but Vanessa doesnât need to know that. Brooke just wants to flaunt it, hey, look how human I am. Vanessa is blissfully unaware, and thatâs what Brooke needs. No threat to her secret, no chance sheâll have to run and leave her friends behind.
âBrooke, can you help me make posters?â Vanessa gets home one night with her arms full of construction paper and Crayola markers. âTheyâre for the dog shelter.â
Vanessa volunteers at a dog shelter every Sunday, coming back with fur on her clothes and a bunch of videos of dogs playing fetch and running in circles. She loves going, yapping about all the dogs after, and even though Brooke is more of a cat person, she listens anyway.
âIâll help,â Brooke says. Itâs only fair after Vanessa made yesterdayâs dinner when Brooke was busy with work.
Markers roll across the table as Vanessa lays her supplies out, and they get to work.
âWhatâs that, a hippo?â Brooke asks at Vanessaâs drawing.
âItâs obviously a dog, Brooke!â
âA dog with a hippoâs nose.â
Vanessa sticks her tongue out at Brooke and Brooke bursts into laughter. The night continues as they pass markers back and forth and Vanessa pops enough popcorn for a movie theatre, ending when Vanessa begins her nighttime shower and skincare routine, the one that leaves her skin soft and glowing, smelling of citrus and coconut. Brookeâs head is full of those scents when Vanessa calls her from the bathroom.
âWhat do you need?â Brooke asks.
âWeâre out of towels.â Thereâs a smug tone to Vanessaâs voice. âThere should be a clean one in the laundry basket, if you wanna bring it to me.â Brooke can practically see Vanessa batting her eyelashes through the door.
Brooke opens the door a crack, extending the towel. She canât look at Vanessa, she canâtâ
âThanks, Brooke!â Half of Vanessaâs broadly-grinning face peeks out, running into the soft lines of her collarbone and gentle curve of her shoulder. Brookeâs dead heart almost jolts back to life. She wants to blast the door off its hinges, grab Vanessa, and throw her on the bedâ
But the alarm on Brookeâs phone goes off, reminding her to get ready for work.
â
Brooke slides up to the corner table, her vampire gang awaiting: Nina sipping her drink, Priyanka checking women out, Kameron deep in thought. Red neon signs flicker on the dark walls, glasses of blood and beer sliding across the bar counter. Whoever thought of a vampire bar is a genius, in Brookeâs opinion, and being here with her friends is one of the best parts of her day.
âSorry Iâm late. Got caught talking to Vanessa.â
âHow is she?â Kameron asks.
âFine! Sheâs fine.â Brooke laughs nervously, reins her voice in before it rises another octave. No need to share what almost happened. Theyâve all heard more than enough about VanessaâVanessa made cookies, try one; Vanessa scored 42 points when we went bowling; Vanessa made the worst pun ever, you have to hear itâand Brooke knows itâs not helping her in the âjust a crushâ department.
âYou know, Brooke,â Nina says slowly, like sheâs been sitting on this a while, âsometimes I think Vanessa isnât fully ⊠human.â
Brooke scoffs. Vanessa, who cries over movies and gives old people her seat on the subway and canât sleep without fuzzy blankets or a squishy pillow, is one of the most human people Brooke has ever met. Then she looks around the table and sees Kameron and Priyanka matching Ninaâs cautious, thoughtful expression.
âWhat, you think sheâs a witch or something?â Brooke barks out a laugh. âThereâs gotta be a cleaning spell she wouldâve used in her room by now.â
âNot a witch,â Nina continues, being the spokesperson of the group. âWe think she might be a werewolf. Kam saw her in the woods last full moon.â
âSo what?â Brooke asks, playing nonchalant even though it is odd that Vanessa would go in the forest at night. âShe can go in the woods, itâs not my business.â
âIâve gotten wolf vibes from her before,â Priyanka says.
Brooke shakes her head fiercely. âSheâs human. She just really likes dogsââ
Nina purses her lips.
ââand her table manners leave something to be desired,â Brooke continues, âbut sheâs human. Besides, Iâd know if she wasnât.â
Kameron frowns.
âWhat?â Brooke demands.
âYou can be kind of oblivious sometimes.â Nina takes over. âI mean, Kameron had a crush on you for months beforeâŠâ she cuts herself off as Brooke and Kameron look anywhere but at each other, not needing the reminder of their old fling. If vampires could blush, theyâd both be flaming.
âBut thatâs fine now,â Kameron says quickly. âI have Asia, and you haveââ
ââA crush on Vanessa,â Priyanka interrupts.
Brooke sighs. She knows her face canât feel hot, but somehow it does anyway. She knows she has a crush; knows she rushes home after nights with her friends just to see Vanessa before she leaves for work, knows she laughs over the stupidest things just because Vanessa does them. But it hurts to hear it out loud when she canât do much about it. Vampires and humans didnât mix. If they had any kind of relationship, Brooke wouldnât be able to hide the secret forever, and Vanessa would probably run when she found out. Who wouldnât?
But Brooke doesnât know how much longer she can keep her feelings inside, pretend she feels nothing when Vanessa sings to herself in the shower, or plays with her dog, or tells Brooke to listen to new songs she discovers, both of them huddling around Vanessaâs phone and smiling.
âI really think you should tell her you like her, Brooke,â Nina says, and Kameron nods.
Brooke shakes her head. âNothing can happen.â
Priyanka winks. âI think it can. I see romance in your future.â
âWe all know you just pretend to be psychic because youâre in love with Alice from Twilight,â Brooke mutters, and she lets the erupting laughter distract her from Vanessa.
â
Silky and Aâkeriaâs paranoia rubs off on Vanessa for a while. She keeps Brooke out in the sun for hours, bumps Brooke in front of mirrors, âaccidentallyâ makes too much garlic bread. She stops just short of running at Brooke with a cross. Brookeâs human, just human, even if Silky and Aâkeria arenât convinced.
Vanessa decides to make breakfast to gloss over any odd behavior Brooke might have noticed. Brooke usually eats a protein bar before she goes to bed each morning, and Vanessa wants her to have a real breakfast.
The idea of telling Brooke her feelings runs through Vanessaâs mind as she flips pancakes. Her being a werewolf is just a small secret, really. A lot easier to hide than her feelings. Lately itâs been all she can do to stop staring at Brookeâs soft skin, to not grab her and finally see how her lips feel.
Keys jingle in the hall and she knows itâs Brooke and her keys with the cat keychain. Itâs just a stupid little detail, but Vanessaâs heart swells with love for Brooke, and it makes her mind up for her.
Vanessa sets the pancakes and scrambled eggs on the table just as the door creaks open.
âVanessa?â Brooke blinks in confusion. âWhatâs this?â
âI made breakfast.â
âYou didnât have to do all this,â Brooke says, but sheâs already drowning her pancakes in syrup.
Vanessa sits across from her. âI wanted to. I wanted to make sure you ate a real breakfast.â
Brooke raises an eyebrow.
âProtein bars arenât breakfast and you know it!â Vanessaâs yell morphs into a laugh that Brooke matches.
âOkay, okay.â Brooke grins. âThese pancakes are amazing, by the way.â
âI know.â Vanessa laughs.
Brooke sips her coffee, and maybe Vanessa bumps the table, maybe she doesnât. Maybe Brookeâs sure, steady hands just fumble a bit. Either way, thereâs a spot of coffee soaking Brookeâs shirt, and when Brooke grabs a washcloth, Vanessa stands up, legs wobbling.
âMaybe you should take that off,â Vanessa says, watching Brooke drop the cloth in the sink.
Brooke raises an eyebrow, her eyes gleaming devilishly. âWhat did you say?â
âI said,â Vanessa breathes, âmaybe you should take that off.â
Brooke bites her lip, and Vanessaâs heart speeds up, wondering if sheâs made the wrong move. But then Brooke grins. âYou first.â
Vanessaâs whole body is on fire as she lifts up her shirt, her face bright red when Brookeâs eyes linger.
âBed. Now,â Brooke commands, and Vanessa runs.
â
Vanessa doesnât realize until later. How could she have realized when Brookeâs hands were roaming her body, when her cool lips touched Vanessaâs, when her ears were full of nothing but her own gasps and moans?
No, she doesnât realize until later, when Brooke is at work and Vanessaâs head is finally clear again, able to think of something besides the blonde hair that Vanessaâs hands tore through and left messy, the soft lips she finally got to kiss, the arm that wrapped around her waist until she fell asleep.
Through all the gasps and touches and excitement, Vanessaâs heart was a bird in her chest, fluttering frantically in response to each and every touch. But when she thinks about it, there was no pulse thrumming through the still rivers of Brookeâs veins as her wrists brushed Vanessaâs body. When she thinks about it, all she heard from Brookeâs rib cage was silence.
Brooke has no heartbeat. And they need to talk.
â
Ninaâs mouth hangs open when Brooke walks in the bar that night, no doubt knowing what just happened. âBrooke, youââ
Brooke sits down and rests her head on the sticky bar table. âI had sex with Vanessa,â she groans into the wood, knowing theyâll hear her.
âI told you bitches!â Priyanka yells.
âShut it, Miss Cleo,â Brooke says, raising her head and taking in everyoneâs expressionsâall of satisfaction and acceptance, not a shocked face in sight.
âWhat are you gonna do now?â Kameron asks. âDoes she know? Did she notice you donât have a heartbeat?â
âHers was going fast enough for us both,â Brooke says. âBesides, she wasnât close enough to my chest to hear anything⊠I donât think so, at least.â
âWhat are you gonna do?â Nina asks.
Brooke groans again. âI donât know. Iâm hoping itâll be a one-time thing and weâll go back to normal.â
âAnd if you donât?â
Brooke sighs. If Vanessa wants a real relationship after this, it wouldnât be fair to her to do that. Brooke would have to run, and she looks around at her friends and knows she never wants to leave them, just like she never wants to leave Vanessa. She forces those thoughts away. âI donât know. What am I supposed to do? Get a cake that says âHey, Iâm a vampire?ââ
Kameron shrugs. âThatâs how I told Asia,â she says, so deadpan Brooke canât even tell if itâs a lie.
âYou canât do a cake, you gotta do some classier shit,â Priyanka says. âCream puffs are classy, right? Do cream puffs.â
Kameron suggests eclairs, and Priyanka insists that cream puffs are better. Brooke buries her face in her hands. If she wasnât a vampire, her friends wouldâve given her a stress-induced heart attack by now.
âOkay, cream puffs and eclairs are basically the same thing!â Nina hisses until Priyanka and Kameron quiet down. Nina then turns to Brooke, a hand on her arm. âLook, things are still new, you donât have to tell her anything yet. Just⊠do the romantic shit. Youâve been single for decades, just be in love for right now.â
Just be in love for right now. Brooke considers it. She hasnât had anything remotely like love since her and Kameron had their brief thing in the 90âs, before deciding they were better as friends. Before that, well⊠Brooke doesnât think she ever has. There were crushes, sure, like the waitress at that diner who knew Brookeâs coffee order, the grocery store cashier that always flirted with her. But they were human, and Brooke knew nothing could ever happen, that she could never have anything with them. But something about Vanessa, human or not, makes her want to try.
âYouâre right,â Brooke says to Nina. âI think me and Vanessa need to talk.â
â
The sun is shining when Brooke gets back to the apartment, and Vanessa is standing in the kitchen with her hands on her hips.
âEverything okay?â Brooke asks. Vanessa obviously has something to say, and Brookeâs stomach lurches with the fear that itâs something bad. What if Vanessa wants to move out after what happened?
âI think I should be asking you that, considering you have no heartbeat,â Vanessa mutters, clenching her fists.
Brooke gulps, rubbing through her actions the past week, wondering if she did something to reveal it, because how does Vanessa know? It doesnât make sense, and she decides to turn the tables.
âHow do you know I have no heartbeat?â Brooke demands. âYou wouldâve had to be right against my chest to notice, and you werenât. UnlessâŠâ Ninaâs theory runs through her mind, and itâs like a fog clears right in front of Brooke. âYouâre a werewolf!â Brooke yells, pointing at Vanessa. âThatâs why you have advanced hearing. Thatâs why my cats have to stay in my room!â
âIâI donât know what youâre talking about,â Vanessa tries, crossing her arms.
Brooke crosses hers too. âThen I donât know what youâre talking about either.â
Theyâre in a standoff, and Brooke isnât going to give first. Sheâll stay for decades, if she has to. She narrows her eyes at Vanessa, whoâs having trouble holding her expression as the seconds tick.
âFine!â Vanessa yells. âIâm a wolf.â Her face softens suddenly, and she looks at Brooke with love in her eyes. âBut I promise Iâll never hurt you, ever. I keep my mind when I change, and I go far away, just in case. Iâd never put you in danger.â
Brookeâs head spins with it all. So Vanessa really is a werewolfâbut from the steps she takes to protect herself and others, sheâs clearly as kind and caring as she always has been, helping old ladies cross the street. And what does it matter, really, that Vanessa isnât fully human, when Brooke isnât human herself? And if Vanessa isnât human, Brooke being a vampire wonât matter to her, and Brooke warms at the thought. She moves closer to Vanessa, pulls her into a hug. âIâll never hurt you either,â she promises. âI only drink animal blood. I just didnât want to tell you because I didnât want to scare you.â
It seems so stupid now, considering the secret Vanessaâs had this whole time, and Brooke canât believe she didnât notice. Maybe she really is as oblivious as Nina said. But maybe, from the love in Vanessaâs eyes, it doesnât matter.
âItâs hard to scare a wolf.â
âIâm stupid, arenât I?â Brooke sighs.
Vanessa shakes her head. âIâm just as stupid, donât worry. Silky and Aâkeria told me you were a vampire but I didnât want to see it. All I saw was you, and I knew I couldnât have you because Iâmââ
âA wolf,â Brooke finishes. âI didnât see it either. I really shouldâve, though, considering the mess you make when you eat.â
âHey!â
âAnd how every dog in a 3-mile radius runs to you.â
âSays Miss Brooke Lynn âI only wear blackâ Hytes!â Vanessa yells, and Brooke snorts.
âI wear gray sometimes!â Brooke protests, and Vanessa rolls her eyes.
Brooke squeezes her gently, breathing in her apple shampoo, letting it calm her. Vanessa looks up at Brooke and grins hopefully. âSo can we do this, then? You and me?â
You and me, Brooke thinks, slightly daunted by how large those words seem. With Vanessa being a wolf, the risk of a human knowing her secret and being in danger is gone. Werewolves even age abnormally slow, so her and Vanessa will have lots of time together. And they already live together, already cook together every night and share their lives each day. How different can it be to make it a full relationship, let their feelings show instead of dancing around them?
âWe can do this,â Brooke says.
Vanessa reaches up and kisses her, and Brooke has never felt so human.

self-care 101 (covid-19 period)
Since weâve rolled round to another May bank holiday, I thought itâd be nice to share some tips with you. As a homebody, and someone who will do absolutely ANYTHING to avoid one specific boring activity, Iâve racked up quite a long list over the past few years. Obviously, Iâm no professional - but I find these help. Thereâs no specific chronological order to these - just pick and choose as you like!
Get out of bed!
Or lie in if you need to. Whatever makes you feel good
Start off the day with some yoga or meditation, or basic stretches
Or pray for a bit if youâre religious
Make your bed: tuck your sheets in, rearrange your pillows, etc.
Brush your hair and tie it up nicely
Pick out a cute outfit - could even be your favourite PJs - and lay it out
Go take a soothing shower, or a bubble bath
Use a bath bomb, get some nice candles if you feel like it
Put on some nice music to relax to
Try out a new hairstyle or style your hair the way you would if you had somewhere to be!
Slap on some makeup, why not? :)Â
Floss your teeth, or maybe use that teeth whitening formula you never picked up again after using it for the first time
Pick out a recipe for a hair mask or face mask and put it on
Before doing any of these, make sure they suit your hair & skin type
E.g. if you have frizzy and dry hair, use a moisturising and rejuvenating mask vs if you have sleek, straight hair - use a volume-enhancing mask. Same goes for your skin - evaluate whether you have dry skin, oily skin or combinationÂ
Stick to the recommended leave in time! It can be extremely difficult to get out later otherwise
Or make your own mask! Thereâs tons of recipes on YouTube and Google :)
Make yourself a nice breakfast
Breakfast smoothies are amazing! A really simple recipe I use contains a few spoonfuls of oats, handful of fruits (e.g. blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, grapes), honey / sugar by taste and yogurt.
Or a nice bowl of your favourite cereal
Avocado toast - there are so many different varieties of this online, and I bet youâll find that you like.
A fruit salad!
Eggs done the way you like
A full English if youâre feeling ambitious
Workout for an hour or so
This doesnât have to be really equipment intense or challenging if you donât want it to be
Some YouTubers I recommend: Chloe Ting, Emi Wong, Fitness Blender, MadFit, Blogilates, Yoga with Adrienne, etc.Â
Donât over exert yourself. Take longer than the recommended break time between exercises if you need to
Grab a new book, or a book you just enjoy reading
You can browse through Spotify for any playlists to listen to while reading - or use a playlist of songs you like
Listen to some music you like
Or discover some new music using Spotifyâs âDiscoverâ feature
Preferably something that lifts your mood!
Pick out a recipe youâve been meaning to try and just make it!
Dance around the house to some music
This can also be a sort-of-workout!
You can try learning a routine
TikTok dances are so stupidly fun
Maybe get a friend on vid-call and learn a dance with them
Make some TikToks
Or duet some on the app!
Get out a new bottle of wine - itâll make you feel boujie ;)
Or your drink of choice - Iâm not big into alc so I usually love a cool mint lemonade or iced coffee
Sit outside if the weather is nice
Or even if itâs rainy! I particularly love rainy days
Go for a walk around your neighbourhood
Do some grocery shopping! It can be surprisingly fun when youâre in no rush - plus, thatâs a task off your future to-do list
Go meet a friend - stand at least 2m away and have a chat
Or text/ call your family / friends
Houseparty is great to use because itâs got games that you can play together if youâre not big on talking
Watch that TV series / movie youâve been trying to get round to
Play with your pet, if you have one!
Do a cute lil photoshoot
Put on a nice outfit and take some nice pictures using the timer
Pictures with your pet
Or take pictures of your surroundings when outside
Or of the new dish youâve impulsively made
Grab a pretty notebook
Start a bullet journal
Or a diary!
Do some journalling using journal prompts online
One really simple activity I really like is writing out 3 things that made my day :)
If youâre a poet or writer - write write write!
Maybe take the first step towards starting a blog (like I did last week, aha)
Play a musical instrumentÂ
Or pick up something you havenât played in a while
Try learning some basic chords online
Or just play your favourite music if youâre a professional
Sing along to your music!
Search up some online webinars and virtual events to attend
Lots of professional webinars on LinkedIn, even Facebook at times
Live museum and art gallery tours on Google!
Try some meditation
Headspace is a great freemium app, among others
Use a guided meditation from YouTube
Create a Pinterest account and start making boards
These can be pretty pictures
Or things youâll have in your future house
Workout routines
Even more self-care recommendations
Sketching
Thereâs this activity where you put your playlist on shuffle and draw what comes to your mind when you hear each song
Or just search up an image online and draw it
Doodle in your bullet journal / book if you have one
Embroider/ stitch some of your old clothes
Plenty of tutorials online!
You can stitch in some cute images :)
Try a new podcastÂ
There are so many to explore on Spotify under the Podcasts section
Or watch something on YouTube
Learn something new if you feel like it
Pick up a subject area of interest and search it up on YouTube
Youâll get so many results!
Reorganise your house / room
Put on some music to jam along to while doing this!
Vacuum
Or just tidy all those papers off the desk
Reorganise your drawers
Fold your clothes
Dust any surfaces - super satisfying!
Maybe spice up your furniture placement
Try moving things around - be careful not to strain yourself
Do some laundry maybe
Yawn, but can be satisfying once youâve done it!
Purge your wardrobe of any old clothes
You can donate them to charities
Or sell them on apps like Depop
Do some online shopping
Be careful not to spend too much though! :)
Download a photoprint app and get some pictures printed
Thereâs a lot of apps that offer you __ amount of free prints with delivery costs - not a bad deal!
You can finally make a photowall / collage
Try some scrapbookingÂ
Get out some old newspapers and magazines and cut out any pictures of words that particularly catch your eye
Make pretty lil collages or spreads with them
Reorganise your digital folders
E.g. bookmarks on Chrome
Saved folders on Insta
Email folders
To Do lists
Give them pretty names so youâre more likely to use them in future
Catch up on some much needed sleepÂ
Afternoon cat naps are actually lovely!
Make yourself some tea or coffee and just sit by the window with some music
Cliché and niche, but makes you feel calmer!
Try some chai recipes online if youâre into relatively milky tea or trying out new recipes
Iâm not a big fan of chai ^ which is surprising as an Indian, but my family and friends love it soo
Do something with your family / roommates
Movie night!
Group dinners (even better - themed dinners!)
Or a fine dining wine night (bonus points if you dress up!)
Board games night
Or just games night e.g. charades, Headbandz, Psych (app)
DnD - never tried it but sm people have recommended it!
Make some TikToks
Sit around and chat
This is random but you can make PPTs about things you like and present them to each other - good for shit n giggles :)Â
Play an old online game e.g. Fireboy and Watergirl!
Create each other in the SimsÂ
Organise some friendly competitions :)
Truth or Dare?Â
Look at star sign stuff with them - whether you believe or not, itâs an interesting thing to do nonetheless
Do Enneagram tests - extremely interesting and scarily accurate from my personal experience
Experimental cocktails maybe!
Some DIY arts and crafts!
Pitch a tent outside
Or make a pillow fort inside
Speaking of which - pillow fights!
Karaoke night
Or set up your own club - make a playlist, get some strobe lights or turn off the lights and get everyone to switch on their phone flash and just dance around. Get some drinks if you want as well!
Have a BBQ - great to do especially in the afternoons or early evenings!
Have a date night if itâs just the two of you :)
Have a picnic outside
Text someone something nice!
Win-win for the sender and the recipient :)
Great chance to reconnect with someone
Cleanse your devices & social media profiles
Change your profile pictures, bios
Archive / delete some pictures (weâre all guilty of this)
Maybe restart your account if you havenât used it in too long, have too many random followers or just want to start afresh
Check your phone storage and delete stuff accordingly
Change your wallpaper / theme
Back up old pictures and delete them off your deviceÂ
And thatâs my list for now! I might add to it later if something comes to me but I hope you guys enjoy this! :)Â

****let me know if you want to be added to the taglist!
bella's origin story | bella's playlist | masterlist
It felt awfully strange to be in Annalise's hometown, knowing she wouldn't be going home right away. The residential part of North Hollywood where her parents lived still felt like it was a million miles away. The glamorous Lyft Lux was going through the equally glamorous parts of the city, and it was almost mundane despite the fact that she had been away for over a year.
Shawn and his younger sister, Aaliyah, were frequently pointing out the exciting things they had only seen in photos and movies: the Chinese Theater, the Walk of Fame, the Hollywood sign. They were bundles of energy and excitement. Annalise was only jittery because she never fully processed that she lives in the same city as her favorite YouTuber, Bella Santiago.
Over a month ago, Bella discovered the Shawn Mendes profile on Spotify, causing her to give him a shoutout on Twitter. Then, just after the release of his newest EP, In My Blood, Bella messaged Shawn, offering to fly him out to LA, put him in a hotel and make a video with her. Shawn immediately jumped at the chance, but he couldn't go without bringing two of the biggest Bella stans he knew, Annalise and Aaliyah. The only reason why it took until the New Year for this to happen was simple: exams and Christmas.
When the semester ended, Annalise spent the holidays and her 22nd birthday with Shawn's family in Pickering, much to her own family's disdain. It was different, celebrating Christmas on the morning of the 25th, rather than the 24th. It was also different not eating tamales or pozole like she did with her family. It totally wasn't annoying when Shawn blasted that god awful Taylor Swift song on the morning of Annalise's birthday. She totally didn't miss her family either.
She had to promise her parents that she would stay in LA for the duration of the holiday break in return for missing all the important holidays. It wasn't a hard decision to make, but it was going to be hard letting Shawn go. Annalise only hoped that there would be time for him to meet her extended family during this trip. From what she understood, as soon as Bella was done with him, Shawn and Aaliyah were getting on a plane straight back to Toronto.
As it turns out, Bella Santiago is insanely generous. She reserved the three of them a deluxe suite at the Marriott. They had a view of the city, a massive king size bed, and a pull out sofa bed. Everything was spotless, and luxurious.
"She didn't have to go this hard," Aaliyah pointed out as she tossed her suitcase to the side.
"What, would you rather sleep on the floor?" Shawn teased. "And pick that up and move it so it's out of the way!"
She rolled her eyes as she did what he said.
Annalise made herself comfortable on top of the white sheets. While all of this was exciting, she was fucking exhausted. It felt like it was much later in the day, having gotten up at seven. The time change made it feel like it was well in the afternoon, but it was barely eleven.
"How's your tummy?" Shawn asked from the window. He had his phone out and was taking photos of the view.
"Much better," she replied.
Against her better judgment, Annalise had a coffee during the five hour flight, and it did not agree with her. She made good friends with a barf bag⊠or three. All the caffeine must have left her system if she was feeling better now.
"What time do we meet Bella?" asked Aaliyah, padding over to stand by her brother.
"Three o'clock," Shawn replied. "In the ballroom downstairs."
That prompted all three of them to take a death nap for the time being. It only lasted about three hours, and when their alarms went off, none of them felt any more rested.
Annalise was the first one to actually get up and get ready. For once, she was intimidated by who she was going to be standing in front of today. She had to look her best, even if it was in all black.
It didn't take long for Aaliyah to follow suit. Soon enough, both girls were sitting in front of the window, using the California sun for their light as they did their makeup.
The funny thing is, as much as they cared about looking their best, neither of them were going to be in Bella's video. She only wanted Shawn, who was still lying in bed half an hour before the scheduled meet up.
"What are you gonna wear?" Annalise asked her boyfriend.
"I don't know," he replied, his voice muffled by the pillow. "Will she even care about what I'm wearing?"
"You're gonna be on her channel," Aaliyah said, looking up from her handheld mirror, "which has millions of viewers, including some of my friends who will never let me hear the end of it if they see my brother looking like a clown in front of the queen!"
Shawn grinned and got up. "I'll go like this, what do you think?" He held his arms out, showcasing his plaid pajama bottoms and a Nike hoodie. He also only had one sock on.
"You'll be dead before you step out of the room like that," Ann darkly added.
âThanks Satan.â He chuckled.
Shawn was only pretending to be calm. Inside, he was shaking and his insides were heavy. He didn't even think about Bella's subscriber count until Aaliyah pointed it out. He really wanted Bella to like him too. She seemed like such a sweetheart from her videos, Shawn hoped that wasn't just a persona.
He had spent most of the flight watching her videos (when Ann wasnât puking up her caffeine, of course.) He made it through a few tutorials, learning a lot about not only makeup, but Bella herself. She suffers from several anxiety disorders and constantly works to better herself. She left her parents when she came out to them as bisexual, and she hasn't spoke to them or her extended family in years. She recently got out of a relationship with another YouTuber named Ethan Nestor, which was part of the reason why she spent half of 2019 in her hometown of Palm Springs. This woman has some thick skin, there was no denying that.
One of the best things that Shawn learned about Bella was that she had a butterfly tattoo on her left arm. In another video, she talked about how her viewers drew butterflies on their arms in support of her when she was down. She got it tattooed for them, and the colors of the wings were the same as the bisexual pride flag. Shawn looked at his own butterfly tattoo differently now.
The other best thing he learned was how talented of a singer Bella was. She had covers on her channel, and Shawn watched every single one. Bella had such a rich, beautiful voice, and it looked so easy for her to hit any high note. She sang Love on the Brain without any strain on her face. She sang a gayer version of You Belong with Me, and played guitar with it. She sang with Markiplier as the opening act when they were on a comedy show tour in 2018.
Shawn couldn't wait to sing with her, though he was intimidated. He thought he was a good singer, but put him next to someone with Ariana Grande levels of talent? The nerves were never ending.
It was ten til three when everyone was ready. Their only predicament was to go down to the ballroom early or not.
âDid she text you?â Aaliyah asked, clearly antsy. âIs she on her way or anything?â
Shawn shook his head. He had changed into a white tee, black jeans and a denim jacket, which the two girls approved of. âShould I message her? Or⊠her manager? Sheâs the one who made all these arrangements.â
âHey, she might not even be here on time,â Ann said. âYouTubers are like celebrities. They run on their own schedules just because they can.â
âBella wouldnât do that, would she?â Aaliyah said in disbelief.
âOnly one way to find out.â
And to the ballroom they went. The space was huge, clearly meant for a party. There were sheer white curtains hanging from the huge windows, and a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. In the far corner of the room, tables and chairs were folded and leaning against the wall. Shawn, Aaliyah, and Ann looked around the room, all silently nervous and excited. Only a few minutes into it, they heard female voices just outside the room.
âBut weâre always early! I knew I should have driven myself!â
âItâs two fifty-nine! Relax, theyâre probably not even here yet!â
âHuh, Iâll be damned,â Ann mumbled, looking at her phone to verify the time.
The owners of the other two voices entered the room, carrying expensive-looking camera equipment and studio lights. They were followed by a bellhop, who was carrying a keyboard in a case. One woman was short and curvy, brown and freckled. Her short black hair was curly and glossed down, and she was wearing a bright red pantsuit.
The other woman was long and lean, decked out in a white long sleeve crop top, a black skirt, and knee high boots. Her iconic bright pink hair made a comeback, that wasnât in her latest video. Her kind face looked airbrushed and flawless, although her brown eyes looked alarmed, like she was caught in headlights.
The first person to break the silence was the woman in red, already establishing her power. âHello!â She held her hand out to Shawn. âIâm Sonji, Iâm Bellaâs manager. I believe we spoke on the phone. And on Twitter.â
âYeah, yeah we did,â he said as they shook hands. âUh, this Aaliyah and Ann, my sister and my girlfriend.â
âHi, ladies!â Sonji greeted, shaking their hands as well. âSo lovely to meet you! God, youâre all so pretty!â
Both girls mumbled shy thank youâs.
âOkay, so my handsome friend here and myself are going to set things up for the video,â Sonji explained. âIn the meantime-â She looked at her silent client. â-Baller, come talk to your little protĂ©gĂ©.â
Then, Sonji led the bellhop further into the room, over by the windows.
Bella still had a bag slung over her shoulder and a massive studio light stand in her hands. She was clutching it to her chest, a very performative and awkward smile etched on her bright pink lips.
âHi!â she said after one very long second. âUh - lemme -â She set down the giant lights and removed the bag from her shoulder. Then she stood up straight and smoothed out her hair. âHi! Uh, I said that already!â
âIâll say it again! Hi!â Shawn greeted, smiling politely.
Bella looked at him and opened her arms for a hug. âItâs nice to finally meet you!â
It might be weird to put it this way, but she smelled pretty. Whatever perfume she was wearing was probably more expensive than the flight over here. Shawn hugged her around her shoulders, inadvertently touching her surprisingly soft hair. You could just tell that she didnât spare a single penny when it came to caring for herself.
âWow, I wasnât expecting you to be so tall!â she said, looking up at Shawn. âFor once, Iâm not the tallest person in the room!â
She couldnât have been taller than Ann, who was five foot five inches and felt very short most of the time.
âAnd this is the sister and the girlfriend?â Bella said, turning to the other two girls. She went to hug Aaliyah, who was more than delighted by the gesture.
Bella leaned back and took her hand. âI love your nails! Love the shape and color!â She ran her thumb over the white acrylics. âSo cute!â
âAw, thank you!â Aaliyah was beaming.
Then, Bella turned to hug Ann. Itâs important to point out that in most situations, Annalise Flores is stone faced, calm, and collected. Today, however, Ann had wide eyes, like she was face the good Lord herself⊠like she was going to drop down on one knee and propose to Bella.
Shawn wouldnât blame her.
âMe encanta su delineador!â Bella told her, gently cupping her face.
âEn serio?â Ann softly asked.
âYes, que linda! Those inner wings are to die for! What do you use?â
âUm.. uh, I think itâs NYX? I donât know the exact one, but itâs definitely NYX!â Ann chuckled nervously.
âWell, it looks amazing!â
Ann looked like she was going to faint with that euphoric dazed look on her face. Thankfully, she stayed on both feet because Sonji grabbed their attention. She managed to sneak by Bella, take the lights and bag, and set them all up by the window. She also set up the keyboard, camera and two chairs. There were three other chairs behind the camera as well. Sonji was incredibly fast.
âWe are all ready to go!â she said to the others.
âShall we?â Bella gestured for the other three to go first.
Shawn, Ann, and Aaliyah went over to the set up, excitement only increasing from here.
"Were you two going to be in the video too?" Sonji asked the two girls.
They both shook their heads.
"Nervous? Don't blame you, the Internet is brutal."
That didn't help Shawn's bundle of nerves. He took a silent deep breath as he went for his guitar case while Bella sat in front of her keyboard. The Internet is brutal, and Shawn's own minuscule corner of it was safe solely because of the size. The fans he tweeted every so often were seemingly normal, and no one was overly critical about him or his music. More exposure means more space for criticism and plain old hate.
Bella had over five million subscribers, and at least forty thousand of them took an interest in Shawn over the last month and a half. It was a lot of new people to make a good impression to. He took another deep breath and removed the guitar from its case. There's no going back now.
"So, I don't want this to be a structured, planned out video," Bella explained when Shawn took the empty chair next to her. "I just want us to talk so my viewers can get to know you, and we'll sing whatever comes to mind."
"Sounds good," Shawn said, not really hearing himself.
"Now everybody - and I mean everybody - take in a deep breath."
The room was silent except for the sounds of everyone inhaling through their noses. Aaliyah and Ann still looked excited as they followed Bella's instruction. Sonji followed as well, like she had done this a thousand times.
"And exhale," Bella breathed out, and the others repeated. "Good. Get those nerves out, breathe away the anxiety. This is fun, we're having fun."
Shawn felt a little better, knowing she was just as nervous, if not more. Throughout all of Bella's mental health videos that he watched on the plane, none of them seemed to touch on how severe her own case was.
Finally, Bella addressed the camera, her soft voice suddenly projected. "Hey, it's Bella! Welcome back to my channel! Today, I'm here with a very special guest! Some of you saw me tweet a while agoâŠ"
Oh god, what the fuck was Shawn going to say? He looked over at Ann, who smiled reassuringly and silently did the motions for deep breathing. Stay calm. You're a strong guy.
"So how long have you been making music?" Bella asked him as she mindlessly pressed keys on her keyboard.
Shawn recalled as best he could. "Uh, I sang covers when I was fifteen. Didn't make my own music until a few years later."
"Nice! Are you in school, or work or something?"
"Yeah, I'm in college. I'm majoring in music and botany."
"Oh, you like plants?"
Shawn was mildly impressed. Most people had to ask what botany is, and he would have to explain for the thousandth time. Then, he would be told to drop the music major because it's easier to find a job in plant science.
"Flowers," he clarified. "I work in a flower shop."
"That's so cool!"
The conversation got easier as time went on. Sometimes Aaliyah or Ann would chime in if they felt that Shawn was getting too confident. Bella giggled every so often, which made everyone in the room adore her even more.
Shawn was about ready to propose when Bella started playing Mercy on her keyboard and humming the beginning. He stared at her in shock for a few seconds before he played along on guitar. Hopefully that didn't look too embarrassing on camera. He listened to her voice for a moment before singing with her in the chorus.
He had plenty of questions for Bella after they went through that song. "Where did you get a voice like that?"
"I could carry a tune as a kid," she explained, "so I was put into singing classes to hone it. Then I did church choir, school choir⊠I just never really stopped singing." She paused and then chuckled nervously. "This is gonna sound pretentious, but I think I got this voice for a reason. Meaning, I have this platform and all these followers. I think I'm meant to use my voice for good. Help people in whatever way I can."
Shawn smiled. "That's beautiful. I see that in your videos. I kinda went on a binge on the plane."
Bella grinned.
"One thing that stood out to meâŠ" Shawn hesitated, minding the camera and the future viewers of this video. "You are so unapologetically bisexual. You always make the point to the person you needed as a kid, because there is still so little bi representation in the media. And you decided, if no one's going to do it, then you'll do it yourself, and I think that's incredible."
"Yeah, I didn't have anyone telling me it's okay to feel what I feel, and I don't want anyone to go through what I went through as a teen."
Shawn nodded, glancing over at Ann once. He had talked about touching on this particular topic with her, and he was starting to have his own shred of doubt.
But, he learned from his girlfriend. Fuck it.
"I wish I had someone like you as a teenager," he said to Bella, strumming his guitar. "I mean, when I came out to my family, I was lucky. They were loving and accepting, but I still couldn't find anyone out there who was like me, in real life or in the media. I really wish I had found your videos sooner."
Bella was beaming. "I knew I liked you."
The two of them went back and forth between talking and singing. They compared butterfly tattoos, and then Bella was asking him about his other tats. Shawn learned a couple of Little Mix songs too, which led him to discover where his girlfriend got that fixation from. He was mostly amazed at how Bella was able to belt out song after song like it was nothing. Like she was meant for this. Why did she choose to be a makeup artist?
"Have you ever been offered a record deal?" Shawn asked. "Or thought about making your own music?"
"Mm, yes and yes," she said. "But singing is more of a hobby. I can't see myself delving into the music industry at all. Makeup is where it's at for me. Makeup got me through some of the hardest times in my life."
Shawn wouldn't say no to a record deal. He'd move to Los Angeles tomorrow if he could. He would do just about anything to play music full time. He glanced over at Ann again, who winked with a smile.

Welcome to my Your Instant Video Empire (YIVE) 3.0 review!
Are you making money with Amazon Associates Program?
Do you agree with me that creating a physical product review video on Amazon is very time consuming and expensive?
Especially when you are just a newbie and have little money to start. Or you have too little time and also want to save money.
In order to create a complete product review video, you will have toâŠ
buy & try out the product you want to promote and also use it for your video.
buy the equipment needed for video recording. (can cost thousands of dollars)
come up with ideas and scripts for your video. (the most headache part)
record and edit the video yourself, which can take several days. (or it costs hundreds to thousands of dollars if you outsource)
take hours to research keywords, tags & meta just to rank one of your videos.
And many other things you have to do yourself even if you have no experience. But not sure you will make money from that video.
Wait! Letâs see the results belowâŠ
After using YIVE version 3.0, everything will be easier. Letâs read my Your Instant Video Empire (YIVE) 3.0 review below to see how this new version can help and save you more money & time.
I have reviewed the old version, you can read it here.

#1. What is YIVE 3.0?
YIVE or Your Instant Video Empire is a powerful tool that allows you auto-create mass videos for ANY affiliate products or even promote local businesses, then drive insane amounts of traffic to your websites/offers.
In the old version, its main purpose is to create mass videos for promoting Amazon products. But now with new version 3.0, it can do more than that.
YIVE 3.0 provides 6 different campaign types, automatically creates and uploads videos fromâŠ
Amazon products. (video reviews)
Specific keywords.
Spintax content.
RSS feeds.
Any URL.
Multiple languages.
Your own video and script.
And it also has these outstanding features:
Works 24/7/365 creating and uploading videos on auto-pilot.
Automatically seasons your Google accounts with natural tasks to keep them alive.
Automatically stacks accounts for more authority.
Built-in phone verification tools.
Built-in playlist booster.
Uses internal residential proxies to manage accounts.
Integrations for automating tasks.
and more.
#2. Who is behind YIVE 3.0?
YIVE was created by Marcus Cudd (a talented marketer) who from my understanding has invested over $100k in itâs development and growth since its first launched in April 2019.
So it proves that YIVE is an amazing tool thatâs here to stay and is constantly being maintained and updated.
In the next section of this Your Instant Video Empire (YIVE) 3.0 review, Iâll show you how this new version all works.
#3. How does YIVE version 3.0 work?
The whole process is fully automated and the same in each campaign.
Before starting to use, you will need to add Google accounts to the system. It will use the built-in proxy system to log in to your account, verify the credentials and check out your YouTube channel then add it to your YIVE account. You can also create a group of accounts for easy management.
When new accounts are added, I always choose the option to âSeasonâ the accounts. YIVE will automatically perform tasks such as checking email, browsing or creating documents, etc,.. to keep your account alive. This is truly an amazing stuff!
I will make a small example on how to create a new campaign to promote security cameras on Amazon. The first step you will need is to give it a name and then select âAmazonâ. Next, follow the steps in the images below.
Step #1: Type your keywords
Step #2: Choose the options
Step #3: Schedule tasks
Another thing that I like about YIVE 3.0 is that it will use 4-5 star ratings of the product to include in the video content. This increases the reliability of the product, thereby increasing sales!
You can edit as many slides as you like and it even reads the review content using the built-in voice over.
In the next section of this YIVE 3.0 review, I will show you what you can do with this new version.
#4. What you actually can do with YIVE v3.0?
YIVE 3.0 is a very great system, not only can you use it to create promotional videos, but you can also create video backlinks, drive traffic, sales and more.
Hereâs a few ways you can use YIVE 3.0:
Dominate Any Niche with Thousands of Videos
Drive Traffic to Your Affiliate Campaigns
Drive Traffic to Your Ecommerce Products
Drive Traffic to Your Adsense Blogs
Drive Traffic to Websites You Flip
Drive Traffic to Websites You Rent
Drive Traffic for Pay Per Call Leads
Drive Traffic to Lead Generation Sites
Drive Traffic to Client Websites
Dominate in Many Languages
Generate YouTube Ad Revenue
Build Authority YouTube Channels
Build Your Email List
Resell Traffic to Clients
Sell ââPre-Roll Ads to Clients
Build mass Video Backlinks for website SEO
Build A Full-Time Income From Home
What really excites me about this tool is its ability to automate tasks. In fact, you can create a complete campaign with just a few clicks taking minutes without any advanced skills.
You can setup multiple campaigns at once, distribute videos across multiple accounts, use spintax, convert scripts to voice over with background music and much more.
And many of your videos will have a chance to RANK on Google as mine do for Amazon affiliate products, local business, list building videos and more.

YIVE is not difficult to use if you take the time to complete the training videos. Everything is as simple as adding accounts and letting YIVE automate everything. Whether itâs 1 or 100 videos, it will help you upload videos over a period of time and repeat.
#9. FAQs about YIVE 3.0
Do we offer a one-time-fee option?
No. This is not a pump and dump software. This is a video marketing platform that is maintained and supported. It is impossible to maintain high-quality software with a one-time fee. There is also NO UPSELL after you subscribe.
Do I need to download any special software?
No. This is cloud-based, so you can access it with an internet connection and any device such as a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone. Nothing to download or install.
Do I need proxies?
No. YIVE handles all of that.
Do I need a VPN?
No. YIVE is cloud-based.
Do I need any special video skills?
No. This tool is built for people who do not have videography or video-editing skills.
Is there training?

Does this work in other countries?
Yes. The videos can be made in many languages.
Do you supply YouTube Accounts?
No. But you can add as many YouTube Accounts as your subscription level permits.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. However, you will get the pricing available at the time of upgrade which may be higher than current pricing.
#10. YIVE 3.0 review: Your turn
To use YIVE, you will need to have Google or YouTube accounts but YIVE does not give you those. So you will have to create or buy one yourself. This is probably the only drawback of YIVE that I can find.
But that will not be a very serious problem, because these accounts are often sold at a cheap price, only a few bucks for an account. (make sure to buy aged accounts, since they already have authority so they will rank better on Google or YouTube)
The important thing here is how you can leverage YIVE to make money from them. Right?
So if you have any questions or need more help, just leave a comment in the section below or contact me. Thanks for reading my Your Instant Video Empire (YIVE) 3.0 review!

But I could never see you and still feel like weâre together in spirit, youâre just that amazing! So hereâs to almost two years of friendship, Iâm so lucky to have you and definitely donât deserve you. God gave me a good one, so I know I must be doing something right. Youâre going to do great things and I canât wait to watch <3

Reindeer on the Roof?
Description:Â Y/N lives above Harry and loves to blast Christmas music. What happens when Harry marches upstairs to confront her, but finds himself highly intrigued?
Word count: 2,145
This is technically Day 6 of the 25 Days of Christmas.
Thank you so much to @alwaysjacked-up for doing this Christmas writing event!! Thank you for letting me be a part of it!! Check out the rest of the authors and the 25 Days of Christmas masterlist here and my other writing here. I hope you guys enjoy it!!
(I also wrote this in a little over an hour with very little editing so please be kind lol)
Six days. Six days in a row that the person living above Harry has been blasting Christmas music. Heâs listened to âSanta Claus is Coming to Townâ and âAll I Want for Christmas Is Youâ about a million times in the past week alone. He was already on edge because he wouldnât be able to make it home for Christmas this year with flights being cancelled and plans just not working out.
He wasnât fully against Christmas music; in fact, he loved Christmas music. Just not blasting loud enough to hear above his apartment. Someone was a little too into their Christmas cheer. Harry groaned when âLet It Snowâ started again. The person didnât even have the decency to switch playlists, a crime Harry could not forgive.
As he tried finishing another last-minute email, Harry typed away, closing his eyes in frustration when all he could focus on was the laughter and tunes coming from above.
âThatâs it,â he grumbled to himself, closing his laptop with too much force, slipping on some tennis shoes and grabbing his phone and keys. He stepped out of his apartment, locking his place briskly before walking to the staircase.
Just as he was about to ascend, he stopped with one foot on the first stair. Silence. The only sound was his breathing and a door faintly closing in the distance. He cherished the moment, taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a few seconds before hearing a cough behind him.
âOh, sorry,â he muttered, stepping out of the way of an older man carrying a few grocery bags.
Harry waited a few more quick seconds before continuing on his journey. He started a script of what he was going to say to the noisy neighbor. As he walked a little ways down the hallway, he hesitated in front of the door where the music was coming from. âFrosty the Snowmanâ was heard throughout the entire hallway.
Harry could also hear people singing inside. He instantly felt guilt swarm through him. These people were having fun and enjoying themselves and he was about to ruin that because he needed to write a few emails.
Important emails, Harry thought to himself. He raised his hand and brought a knuckle to the door, hitting it a few times. The music didnât falter, and the laughter didnât die down. After waiting a few seconds, Harry rolled his eyes and brought his fist up, giving a few harder knocks. Again, nothing seemed to change.
Just as he was about to bring his fist up again, anger evident in his actions, the door swung open, revealing a woman in one of the ugliest sweaters Harry has ever seen. With lights and bells, the horrendous green and red sweater hung around the body of the woman standing in front of him. She hesitated, eyeing Harry.
âHey, I donât mean to be rude, but-â Harry started, but was soon interrupted by the womanâs face lighting up, a smile wide on her face and her eyebrows raised.
âYou must be the judge! Come in, come in!â she reached forward, grabbing his sleeve and pulling him inside her apartment. âWeâve been waiting for you. I thought Marco told you to be here at six? Ah, whatever, weâve busied ourselves. Youâre not very festive are you?â
âWhat?â Harry exclaimed.
âItâs an ugly sweater party!â She laughed, looking at his attire. âOh well. We have white wine, which is almost gone, some red wine, and I might have a few beers in the fridge. What do you want?â
Harry couldnât speak. How could he? He was just about to scold this woman for playing Christmas music loud enough for the entire apartment complex to hear, now heâs in her apartment and sheâs offering him a drink? What went wrong?
She noticed Harryâs hesitance. âIâll get you a water. Everyone else is in the living room, so find a place to sit!â she ordered, leaving his side to head to the kitchen.
Harry watched as she left, his feet carrying him throughout her apartment. Every surface seemed to be covered in pictures of, what he assumed, her friends and family. There were a couple frames filled with her holding dogs, children, or other people. She was smiling or making a funny face in every single one.
By the time he made it to the living room, Harry had skimmed over every wall in sight. He looked at the four other people in the living room. Their faces were flushed with laughter and wine. Two people sat on the floor in front of a coffee table, and the other two sat on a couch. Everyone clearly drank their fair share of wine.
âOh, the judge is here! Whatâs your name again?â a woman sitting on the couch asked, lifting her wine glass to her lips.
âUh, Harry,â he responded.
âGreat! Take a seat in this chair! Weâre going to start soon, once Y/N gets back.â
âY/N?â
âYou know, the girl who owns the place?â she laughed.
Harry raised his eyebrows and nodded. He made his way to the recliner, having to step over a bottle of wine and a few hand-made, paper snowflakes on the way. Harry sat, glancing around the room. More pictures of Y/N crowded their way into the space around him. He noticed that a lot of the pictures held the faces of the same people who sat in front of him.
âYou donât look familiar,â a guy sitting on the floor giggled. He was very clearly the most drunk.
âMarco! Heâs the judge you picked out.â
âHm, donât think so. I wouldnât pick him out, not for the judge anyway. Maybe for something else,â Marco winked at Harry, causing a deep red to creep up his neck and onto his cheeks. He also gave a small smile.
âMarco, stop flirting, now hand out the paints,â Y/N playfully snapped, handing the glass of water in her hand to Harry. He graciously accepted it, taking a big gulp right away to soothe his dry throat.
âWhat am I judging, exactly?â Harry asked, wiping the condensation from the water onto his pants.
âWeâre following a Bob Ross painting tutorial,â Y/N answered, accepting a basket of paint tubes from Marco. âHe really didnât tell you anything, huh?â
Harry shook his head and took a deep breath. He watched as each person readied their canvas and paint brushes. The television next to him started up, a Bob Ross episode already waiting on Netflix.
The episode started, each person suddenly extremely focused, their paint brushes swishing to and fro. Harry watched intently, his attention specifically focusing on Y/N. She furrowed her eyebrows and flicked her wrist just right as her eyes stayed on the television. The faint lights from her sweater gave her chin and cheeks a light red tint, her double chin showing up once in a while when she was confused.
By the end of the episode, Harry had memorized her face. He felt like he could recognize her just by her eyes. Her face was like a map, and Harry could mark every contour. He canât believe heâs never seen her around before, despite her living directly above him.
âAlright, judge, your time to shine,â she smiled, giving light blows to her painting so it would dry faster.
Harry coughed, leaving his trance. He sat up straighter and took another sip of water before setting it down on the coffee table. As he looked at each painting and compared them to Bob Rossâs, he took his job very seriously. Even though he wasnât the actual judge, he knew that the people in front of him were competitive, and winning this painting contest means winning the world.
His eyes landed on Y/Nâs, admiring the little details she was able to squeeze in, like a dusty layer of snow on trees and a reflection of light on the frozen lake. He wasnât sure if he was hyperaware of how good her painting was because she was actually an amazing painter or because of his undeniable developing crush on her.
âSo, boss, whoâs the winner?â Marco asked, his words slurred together.
Harry pretended to think about it before shaking his head. âItâs hard, but I think I have to go with Y/N.â
Marco rolled his eyes and started laughing. Two girls started clapping and another guy, who seemed to be the quietest out of everyone, finished his glass of wine with a single chug. Y/N smugly grinned as she pretended to flip her hair over her shoulder dramatically.
âShouldâve known,â Elizabeth, the other person sitting on floor, chuckled.
âWhat?â Harry asked.
âY/N is a fucking artist,â the other guy in the room answered. âSee these paintings and drawings all over her walls? She did them herself.â
Harry scanned the room, taking in each and every piece of art. He noticed them before, and did admire them; however, now that he knew they were done by Y/N, he let his eyes linger longer.
âOh, hush, stop embarrassing me,â Y/N said, casting her eyes to the ground as she shyly smiled. A blush was evident on her face.
âTheyâre really good. I didnât know,â Harry complimented, making eye contact with Y/N. âAre you a professional?â
She scoffed and waved her hand. âHell no. I mean, I do some commissions, but Iâm just a receptionist at a gym. Art doesnât pay the bills unless you have a big name.â
Harry nodded, completely understanding. Just as he was about to make another comment, people started gathering their items, mentioning stuff about heading home and sleeping. Harry didnât realize how dark the sky had gotten since he arrived.
Marco was the last to leave, pecking Y/Nâs cheek and hugging her goodbye. He quickly waved to Harry before slipping on his coat and closing Y/Nâs door behind him. Harry was left alone with Y/N.
âYou werenât the judge, were you?â Y/N asked after a few seconds of silence.
Harry laughed, rubbing his eyes with his fingers. âNo.â
âWhy did you come to my place, then?â
âI came up here to complain about your loud Christmas music. You do realize itâs been six days of nonstop Christmas music youâve been playing? Six bloody days,â he smiled.
Y/N crossed her arms. âWell, damn, you really arenât festive. Wait, do you live here?â
âRight below you,â Harry tapped his foot on the floor.
âOh. Well, Iâm only slightly sorry. Shouldnât you be home for Christmas anyway? Or does your family live near here?â
âNah, plans didnât work out so Iâm stuck here. My, myself, and I on Christmas this year,â he said, making his way to her door.
âIâm sorry to hear that,â Y/N said, her voice genuine.
Harry shrugged. âIt sucks, but not much I can do about it.â
Y/N agreed, making more small talk with Harry before he reached for the door handle, mentioning how he should be leaving. He thanked her for an amazing night, despite him originally showing up to complain.
âI will say that you have the most disgusting sweater Iâve seen in a long time, though,â Harry snickered.
Y/N gasped, reaching forward and giving a quick slap to Harryâs arm as she laughed. âHow dare you! I had to dig through two tubs of clothes before I found this, thank you very much.â
Harry laughed, crinkling his eyes and throwing his head back. âIâll see you around, Y/N,â he said before leaving her apartment. As he walked down the hallway, he waited for the sound of her door closing, but it never came.
âHey,â he heard a soft yell come from down the hall. Harry turned back around.
Y/N was standing in front of him, her arms crossed again. âIâm going to be here for Christmas, too. Itâs just going to be me, myself, and probably my vibrator.â
Harryâs eyes widened as he opened his mouth in surprise.
Y/N shook her head and closed her eyes. âIâm sorry, that was crude, but Iâm a little drunk. Anyway, youâre welcome to join me. I promise I wonât use my vibrator in front of you. Just bring a nice bottle of wine and like, something to eat, yeah?â
âIâd love that,â Harry smiled, licking his lips.
Y/N nodded and started to turn. âIâll see you around, Harry.â
Harry nodded and turned again, descending the stairs. A smile was plastered on his face the entire way back to his own apartment. As he arrived to his door, unlocking it and stepping inside, he grinned even wider when he heard Mariah Careyâs voice coming from above. He was more optimistic and couldnât wait for the upcoming holiday, ready to spend Christmas with his new friend.

Earthshine [2]
Part one is here
Playlist is here
When tour was finally over you were able to see Ashton after the longest nine months. Unfortunately you wouldnât be able to see each other until you met him at the carpet for the awards show. He told you what his outfit would be and you made sure the dress you bought would match his accordingly.
The dress you chose was a long sleeved black sequined dress that stopped at mid-thigh with a peek-a-boo back. This was the first time youâd be seeing your boyfriend in so long you wanted to make sure you looked amazing so you got your hair and nails done in the early morning. You followed a make-up tutorial to a T on YouTube and turned your body every which way in floor length mirror. You didnât want a hair out of place or smudged mascara anywhere.
After the thousandth time twirling in front of the mirror, you got a text that the car taking you to the awards arrived at your hotel. With one final look you snatch your sequined clutch and rushed out the door. The view to the carpet was spectacular since youâve never been to Australia but the pretty sights didnât alter the bundle of nerves in your belly.
Not only would this be the first time youâre seeing Ashton, it would also be the first appearance youâd be making as a couple. With the whole fandom watching. With photographers snapping your photo any chance they got.
âHere we are miss,â the driver says rolling to a stop at the end of the carpet. âAshton said someone is out there waiting for you and will take you where you need to be.â
âPerfect, thank you,â you smile at him in the rear view mirror. With a deep breath you open the door and exit the vehicle, making sure your legs were crossed (youâd seen magazine articles of sneaky peep shots).
âY/n?â a short woman with dark hair asks holding two phones in her hand.
âYes?â
âFollow me, Iâm Anya and Iâll be taking you to the checkpoint where youâll meet Ashton and the others,â she says already spinning in her heels and walking away.
You skip a little to keep up with her and nearly bump into her when she suddenly stops near an ARIAâs backdrop next to some plants.
âI just got notified that the guys just arrived. Heâll meet you here in no less than ten minutes, they need to do photos and small interviews beforehand,â Anya explains.
âOkay. Thank you,â you smile meekly at her before she leaves you all alone next to the plants.
You try to relax your breathing as you take in the controlled chaos all around you and tried not to hyperventilate as celebrities walked past you. Checking your phone you saw itâs been nearly eight minutes and when you glance up you see a familiar face. Your breath gets caught in your throat as Ashton finishes speaking with a reporter and heâs right there looking sensational in all black with a shimmery suit coat. Your dress matched him perfectly.
You roll your lips into your mouth shaking your leg to prevent yourself from darting over to him and leaping into his arms. You watch as he steps back to let Luke talk next when he looks over in your direction and itâs like the world stops. Just like when you first met nearly ten months ago the stars aligned and you felt a wave of peace wash over you as you locked eyes with Ashton.
To your surprise he leaves the boys and reporter and is in front of you in mere seconds, his large hands cupping your face. The familiar warmth and body shave rolled over you and all you felt was happiness as you both stared at each other.
âYouâre here, youâre really here,â he murmurs stroking your cheek. Then his hands are removed from your face and instead wrapped around your lower back as he lifts you into a spinning hug.
You squeal in his ear but hug him back with as much enthusiasm and soon youâre both laughing, not even realizing the flashes going off at your small reunion. The butterflies are still in your stomach but you feel whole again with Ashton there. He sets you back on your feet and lets out a deep sigh, his brows pulling together.
âI really want to kiss you,â he confesses caressing your cheek with the pad of his thumb.
âI wonât stop you,â you shake your head.
âEven in front of all these people?â
âYouâre the only one that matters to me.â
He flashes a smile before connecting his lips to yours and you feel as if your body is filled with air. Your hand plays with his hair at the base of his neck while his hold tightens on your waist. To your dismay he breaks the kiss quickly but then you remember youâre in front of people. People with cameras nonetheless.
The rest of the evening is spent with cheek kisses, hand holding, knuckle kisses from Ashton and finding any excuse to be in physical contact. The boys ended up winning three of the four of their nominations and you cheered as loud as you could each time.
Walking back to your hotel room hand in hand and Ashtonâs jacket slung around your shoulders, he breaks the comfortable silence.
âIâm so grateful that youâre here, angel,â he says.
âI am too,â you smile at him pulling your room card out of your purse.
âHonestly, if we didnât win anything tonight I feel like I have the best prize in the whole world because youâre here with me.â
You feel your cheeks redden as you open the door. You release his hand leaning against the open door and gaze up at him.
âOh yeah? Would you like to unwrap your prize?â you step back into the room biting your lip.
âGod, Iâve missed you,â he groans.
His jacket is soon on the floor with the rest of your clothes following suit. The waning gibbous moon shone through the crack of the curtains as Ashton showed you just how much gratitude he had.
âąââąââą
After months and months of planning, the 10 year anniversary party of the magazine you work for has arrived. Since you became Senior Assistant to the editor the job to plan the party fell into your hands. You spent odd hours at the office planning and planning. From the venue all the way to the design on the napkins, it was your responsibility.
It was taking up so much of your time that you fell asleep during a wonderful dinner that Ashton made for you one night.
But now the party is here and Ashton of course accompanied you on your big night. He was completely astounded at how perfect you made everything look and he even felt a little smug when he overheard your coworkers gushing about the whole festivity.
You were beaming the whole night and Ashton was so proud to see you succeed in your element until a man approached you with two drinks in hand. You took the champagne flute graciously. Ashton decided to cut in when he noticed the bloke rubbed your back a little too affectionately.
âThere you are love,â Ashton greets and presses a kiss to your forehead before slinging his arm around your shoulders protectively. He eyes up the bloke in front of you whoâs about a head shorter than Ashton and has his dark hair slicked back.
âOh, Ashton this is my assistantââ it still floored you that you had your own assistantââClay Watkins. He helped me with planning.â
âI did no such thing, this was all you,â Clay beams. âI just made sure your notes and payments were organized.â
âWhich helped me a ton!â you protest.
âSheâs so modest,â Clay grins looking at Ashton.
âI know she is,â he responds a little too coldly. You throw Ashton a look.
For the rest of the evening Ashton was a little too quiet for your liking and you noticed the hard glare he gave Clay whenever he approached you or spoke to you. This wasnât the time or the place to discuss his jealous tendenciesâthat you had no idea he possessedâso you tried to keep your attitude light. Even though his behavior was driving you nuts.
âWhy were you acting weird tonight?â you finally ask as you set your purse down on the kitchen counter back at the house.
âI donât like that Clay guy,â Ashton shakes his head, âhe was always touching you and trying to tell me things about you. As if I didnât already know.â
âHeâs my assistant, Ash. We spent a lot of time together because of this party.â
âYeah, working until well past midnight most nights,â he mumbles peeling off his suit jacket.
Your mouth is agape at what his words were insinuating. âYou honestly think I would cheat on you?â You canât believe this. Where was this insecurity coming from?
âNo, of courseââ
âDonât you trust me?â
âBabe, I do trustââ
âClay is my coworker, nothing will ever happen because I love you. But itâs not like I donât have to deal with girls flaunting themselves at you while youâre halfway around the world,â you scoff and cross your arms.
âThatâs different, I donât work with them.â
âHow does that make a difference? And itâs not just out in public, Iâve seen the comments and how other celebrities send you messages on Instagram but I trust you and our relationship. Doesnât mean it doesnât hurt me any less.â You swipe away a stray tear that betrayed you in your growing anger and frustration. Ashton has nothing to say, he just looks at his feet.
âIâm tired and my feet hurt. Iâm going to bed,â you shake your head kicking your heels off then carry them upstairs to your bedroom.
You feel Ashtonâs body against yours as you lay under the covers, his hands wrap around to the front of your stomach, his mouth in the crook of your neck.
âIâm sorry. I didnât like seeing how Clay acts around you but I shouldnât have acted the way that I did,â he apologizes, âmy jealousy got the better of me.â His breath tickles your ear and you roll onto your back to look up at him.
âThank you for apologizing, now you got a little taste of what I went through while you were gone,â you say meekly.
âI wish I could stop it. Iâve only got eyes for you, love.â He kisses your nose then the corner of your mouth before sealing his love for you in a kiss.
âDitto,â you smile on his lips and you both hold each other comfortably.
The third quarter moon shines down on you, the forgiveness pushing away the earlier resentment and jealousy. Like the moon, the light of your love cast away any impending darkness.
âąââąââą
Itâs been two weeks. Two weeks since you lost your baby.
You and Ashton were elated when the unexpected joy appeared in your lives. The thought of a little bit of you and a little bit of him had made an itty bitty baby was so surreal you couldnât help but smile each time you touched your stomach.
Since that terrible day you moved around Ashton like a planet lost in orbit. The light in your eyes drained, the color in your cheeks paled and you barely spoke. Because if you spoke, the terrible thoughts of how itâs your fault would take over and youâd have no choice but to believe it..
Ashton tried to console you on numerous occasions, but he didnât know exactly how to help. He couldnât even imagine what you were going through but he never left your side. When/if you finally released your hurt and anger he would be there. If you needed a punching bag he would be there.
He hated seeing you this way. Then one night when he came home he heard Tom Waits blasting from upstairs. He found you leaning against the bed on the floor, your face was red with dried tears on your cheeks and shirt.
âBaby,â he says gently and sits next to you. Heâs upset he wasnât here to help you when you finally released your pent up pain.
Without a word, you crawl onto his lap folding yourself into his warm embrace. His arms hold onto you protectively, his touch eased some of the aching and doubt youâd been feeling the last few weeks.
âWhat can I do?â he asks a little helpless.
âJust hold me,â you whisper into his neck. You close your eyes and concentrate on his breathing, you can feel his pulse on your lips.
Ashton tangles his fingers through your hair and hums along to the song. You cried yourself dry you were exhausted. You wanted to release your pain on your own and completely surrender to it so youâd be one step closer to healing.
You and Ashton stayed like that until the moon rose in the darkened violet sky. Your pain and sadness waned with the crescent of the moon, the light illuminating hope.
âąââąââą
The candles were lit, the flowers were displayed perfectly about the room and the violins were singing softly, the echo around the room was angelic. A quiet hum from the guests filled the warm space as they watched Ashton and his groomsmen take their place at the end of the aisle. He stood proudly and confidently even though his heart was racing in anticipation for you.
The string quartet began to play and your bridesmaids glided down the aisle. Ashton began to tap his fingers on the back of his other hand, a habit he formed from playing drums to help calm him down.
The quartet transitions into the song youâll be walking down the aisle to and Ashtonâs never been more nervous and excited in his life. You shared the same sentiments on the other side of the double doors.
The candles and flowers took your breath away as soon as the doors opened, but you only paid attention to them for a moment until you locked eyes with Ashton and the whole world stopped. The stars aligned just like the first time you met in the coffee shop four years ago.
You both beamed as you made your way to the love of your life, tears springing in your eyes as Ashton wiped his own tears with his thumbs. He looked amazing with the glow of the candles behind him, it was like your own little universe with the small flames.
After the ceremony and pictures (so many pictures) it was time for dinner and the reception. Throughout the course of the meal the glasses were clinked with knives and forks over a dozen times and each time you kissed each other happily.
âItâs time for our first dance, wife,â he grins holding his hand out to you.
The song âCanât Help Falling in Loveâ begins to play as soon as youâre pulled against his chest. Looks of love and elation passed between you two and he kept murmuring how gorgeous you look. Photos and video captured your first dance as husband and wife, but when you were in each otherâs arms it was like you were the only two people in the world.
âYouâre my husband,â you canât help but giggle at the realization.
âFor better or for worse, angel,â he smirks tightening his hold on your waist.
Some things are meant to be
Ashton spins you away from him, your dress twirling beautifully. The music halts for a perfect moment, then when Kina Grannis sings again
So, take my hand, take my whole life, too
He holds out his hand for you to take and he spins you right back into his chest. The crowd awed and oohed at the beautiful moment, both of you smiled before he leans down and presses his lips to yours. More cheers are heard but you keep kissing him until the song is over.
When the party was over and you kissed the last guest goodbye, you and Ashton retired to your honeymoon suite in the hotel. He looked delicious with his white shirt unbuttoned, his tie hanging loosely around his neck and his hair tousled.
Once the door snapped shut behind you, his long fingers were already undoing the buttons along your back, his lips sucking on your neck as he did so. His mouth followed his fingers and when the last button was undone, your pretty white gown billowed to the ground like a cloud. He spun you around by your thighs so you were facing him, your hands immediately brushing through his hair.
âWhatâs this?â he asks raising his eyebrows as he traces the written word ânewâ below your bellybutton.
âWell, you know how I have to have something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?â
âYeah . . .â he nods slowly still staring at the word. You could practically see the gears in his mind trying to decipher what this means.
âWell,â you sigh, âmy something new is inside me. Iâll be twelve weeks tomorrow, Ashton.â
âAre you saying youâre--?â he looks up at you with wide eyes.
âIâm pregnant,â you nod. âMy doctor says I was in the clear on week eight but I wanted to make sure before I told you.â
âWoo!â He yelps excitedly and lifts you into his arms. Your legs wrap around his waist and he tosses you onto the bed attaching his lips to yours greedily. Youâre laughing around his mouth at his enthusiasm then he looks at you in awe. âThis is the best wedding day ever.â He lowers himself down to your belly and kisses the temporary ink, his lips lingering on each letter. âI love you.â
âI love you, too.â
âShh, I was talking to little pip,â
âLittle pip?â you laugh brushing his hair from his forehead.
âLittle pipsqueak,â he shrugs and kisses your belly again. Now that Ashton knows the slight roundness of your tummy seems more prominent now.
âAre you happy?â
Ashton hovers above you, his hands on either side of your face. âI am the happiest man in the world,â he gives you a hard kiss then his eyes turn dark with lust. âNow, I want to make you feel as good as I do.â
His finger slips below the white lace of your panties, you moan from his touch and the curl of his finger. Somehow through the work of his magic fingers, you push his shirt from his body and he attaches his mouth to your neck.
You make love under the new moon, you can barely see the outline but itâs a sign of new beginnings. You and Ashton have gone through many moon phases in your relationship, each one powerful and significant in its own way to bring you this very moment. Your love began with the moon and within that love you created the most perfect miracle.
With the sunshine from him and the moonlight from you, your little baby is your own earthshine. Your love will forever glow.

* 2017 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR
two thousand + seventeen birthed fantastic records that found me like friends, over + over again. these masterpieces lead me to people + experiences on adventures far better than i could have dreamed. these collections songs kept me company through the highest highs, the lowest lows + the walking in between of this year marked by hardship + madness, for most of the world. these are the tunes i smiled + screamed + cried + danced to the most, this year. iâm wildly grateful for each artist + the remarkable melody-wrapped memories theyâve gifted me. hereâs to the songs that stay. đ€
loved in no particular order:
* LOVELY LITTLE LONELY - the maine
brilliant + poetic + free. this band has been liberating me since i was seventeen. before lovely little lonely was even born i jumped at the chance to celebrate 10 years of this band of brothers whoâve grown up alongside their family of fans. to truly live the lyric: âletâs fall back in love with the world + who we are + do the things we talked about but never did before..â iâm grateful to the maine for adventures i only ever dreamed + for the soundtrack to them all.. sheâs a masterpiece.
* THE SEARCH FOR EVERYTHING - john mayer
âAnd that ends an era. August â14-April â17. I made this record for *you*. May you hear and see and feel yourself in these songs.â đâ„ïžđ - @johnmayer
sheâs stunning from beginning to end.. i kept telling everyone this show felt like experiencing a film.. itâs surely safe to say JM has made another stellar, artistic set of songs for the soundtrack of my life. wow, wow, wow.. as he kept saying to us, âthank you, thank you, thank you.â
â[On The search for everything, Mayer] succeeds because heâs not donning a new costume: instead, heâs settling into a groove he can claim as his own, and it feels like heâs at home.â - AllMusic
* HARRY STYLES - harry styles
(on album release day) every once in awhile, a record comes along that surprises you in a great way. as i put it to my best friend, [on release day].. âoops, i think i like harryâs album.â THE cameron crowe recently wrote a truly stunning, intriguing rolling stone cover story with styles as the subject.. (the cover that my mom thought featured âa young mick jagger,â without a clue about the previous weekâs SNL sketch, ha). as someone who was never into one direction (sorry, rob sheffield), i likely wouldnât have given this album a shot, but itâs everything you wouldnât expect to hear in a âformer pop starâ solo record. thanks to two of my favorite writers (rob sheffield, who penned the RS review like only he can, + crowe) for encouraging me to see harry for more than the kid from the boy band.. as crowe put it (on the RS music now podcast), âheâs a music geek, in the best way..â his love of classic rock shines through, while still capturing a sound all his own. well done, HS. âfrom the dining tableâ + âtwo ghostsâ are early favorites.. which i chose just before ryan adams tweeted it.
Rolling Stoneâs Rob Sheffield put HS at number 3 on his 2017 album list: âWhat a revelation to see Styles live the same week as Paul McCartney â a tutorial on the connection between joy and brilliance. So is this album. The songs are built to last, standing up to months of ridiculously heavy listening. The only rock star who can come on like Macca and Mick at the same time. The only rock star who could earn all six minutes of "Sign of the Times.â The only rock star using his hard-won artistic freedom to craft the kind of hilariously anti-commercial old-school personal statement where every song counts, making big guitar moves everybody else this year was too timid to try. The only rock star who thinks cigarettes in New York are âcheap.â The only rock star.â
* PRISONER - ryan adams
"i think âprisonerâ has so much more hope + sensuality in itâto me, itâs liberating. those songs are more a celebration of becoming something as itâs broken apart.â
a note to ryan, as tour came to a close:
i feel the most alive inside of these songs.. the ones that break me open + somehow heal me, all at once. RA, i know this time out on the road stole your health + your joy, at times, but the wonder with which you kept playing was magic to witness. iâm grateful for your pursuit of growth + grace, no matter what comes your way. be it bronchitis, haters or heartbreak, you never let anything keep you down. thank you for not one, but two flawless dates in two sparkling cities on the prisoner tour. rest up + stay weird.. xo
* ONLY THE LONELY - colony house
just shy of two weeks into 2017, franklin, tennessee born + bred band of brothers colony house released a creative, impactful collection of songs for the soul. the rocknroll bandâs strong sophomore effort landed them spots in the yearâs finest festivals across the country (homegrown pilgrimage fest, chicagoâs lollapalooza, new orleansâ voodoo experience). it will be exciting to see where these driving, honest story songs take them in the coming year.
* WONDERFUL WONDERFUL - the killers
the fifth studio album from brandon flowers + co has been called their strongest in over a decade. the frontman said the lead single, âthe man,â was written through the lens of what his 20-something self thought it was to be a man..âbeing tough + bringing home the bacon, when really itâs about being compassionate + empathetic.â
For NME, Flowers shared that the lyrics of the album are âthe most personal and bareâ that he has ever been: âIâm looking in the mirror on this record and focusing a lot on my own personal experiences. Instead of just drawing upon all these experiences and maybe using them in other songs, I am going straight for it with this and singing about my life and my family and thatâs something different for me.â The track âRutâ was inspired by the struggle of Flowersâ wife Tana with PTSD. He said: âUsually I feel protective of her but I decided to take it head on. So 'Rutâ is about her submitting to it. That doesnât mean that sheâs gonna let it beat her, but rather that sheâs gonna finally acknowledge that itâs there and promise to break this cycle.â Flowers also added that putting his wifeâs battle into a song helped him understand better what she is going through. âHave All the Songs Been Written?â was originally the subject line of an email Brandon Flowers sent to Bono, in the midst of a bout of writerâs block, before the latter suggested it would make an excellent song title.â
'wonderful wonderfulâ is altogether driving + poignant + strong, intricately crafted for the artist + his listener.
* METAPHYSICAL - the technicolors
as soon as i experienced the technicolorsâfriends/labelmates/co-creators of the maineâlive, i knew they would be in my life from that day forward. it seemed previous projects couldnât quite capture the passion + enthusiasm of that short set, so 2017âs "metaphysicalâ was highly anticipated by many.
the titleâs defined as ârelating to the transcendent or to a reality beyond what is perceptible to the senses. beyond ordinary experience.â the aptly named project evokes a raw, ethereal energy that draws outside the lines, while remaining true to a rock solid focus. âsweat,â âimposter!â + âcongratulations youâre a dollâ would be welcome additions to any playlist, however itâs recommended listeners follow the sparkling sonic story from start to finish.
* CONCRETE + GOLD - foo fighters the ninth record from foo fighters is born + it is a freaking force. dave says itâs motörhead meets sgt. pepperâs. i sure do dig the super crunchy guitars + layered vocal melodies. paul mccartney plays drums + justin timberlake sings bgvs, just cause he wanted to + it makes me the happiest human.
âI feel an earthquake coming on,â Dave Grohl sings on âDirty Water,â a moment of fragile guitar poetry from Foo Fightersâ ninth album. Of course, keeping things steady amid chaos has been one of Grohlâs signature themes since the Foos were born from the wreckage of Nirvana a couple of forevers ago. Musically and emotionally, Concrete and Gold is their most balanced record yet â from stadium-punk dive bombers like âRunâ and âLa Dee Daâ to the acoustic soul that opens âT-Shirt,â in which Grohl gets his Nina Simone on, singing, âI donât wanna be king/I just wanna sing a love song.â âSunday Rainâ is a guitar weeper so late-Beatles great it even has Paul McCartney playing drums on it.
Adele co-writer Greg Kurstinâs production adds big-studio texture without diluting the bandâs raw tumult; even Justin Timberlakeâs appearance â as a backing vocalist on the space-truckinâ âMake It Rightâ â is subtle rather than ostentatious. The highlight is âThe Sky Is a Neighborhood,â a hulking dream-metal anthem: âTrouble to the right and left,â Grohl sings, driving into the darkness with a Bic lighter raised to the heavens.â - Rolling Stone
* HALLOWEEN - ruston kelly
ruston kelly captured me, years ago, with the single release of his flawlessly raw, haunting "black magic.â ever since, like a ghost itself, the song was never far from me.
Rolling Stone writes, âBlack Magicâ is a crescendoing rocker that ponders the bewitching pull of romance âand how it can easily disappear in a cloud of smoke.â
"Kelly is just as adept at making catchy country grooves â Tim McGraw and Josh Abbott Band have cut his tracks âas he is capturing lifeâs darkest, most introspective moments. The songwriterâs debut EP, the Mike Mogis-produced Halloween, is a solemn meditation on the inevitable end of things, and the spirits that tend to haunt us. Kelly came to Tennessee as a last-minute decision after attending high school in Belgium (he jokes that his father might have been a spy). Once he landed in town, he held tenure in the jam band Elmwood and battled addiction, writing songs on Music Row while exploring his demons on Halloween and his forthcoming full-length. Current single "Black Magicâ shows a powerful grasp on storytelling gleaned from his love of the Carter Family and Townes Van Zandt, but also a more ragged rock & roll soul: itâs Americana, if your Americana is Bruce Springsteen with an acoustic guitar, sung by someone who spins a little heavy metal too. âSometimes I wear both a cowboy hat and a Slayer T-shirt, just to throw people off,â Kelly says.â
* REPUTATION - taylor swift
"hold on to the memories, they will hold on to youâ at her core, i still believe taylor to be the fiercely strong, quietly brilliant songwriter sheâs always been. the power of the song comes through when you strip it down + it still shines just as bright. thank you for making music that meets me where i am + takes me away, since that very first day, at fifteen (2006). thank you for this one + for playing it for jimmy fallon + his momma (go watch that performance + weep!) i look forward to growing into this record as i have the five that came before.. iâve never doubted her prowess as a storyteller.. + i wonât start now.
see also: Rob Sheffieldâs glorious write up. i wholeheartedly agree. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/taylor-swift-reputation-sheffield-review-most-intimate-lp-w511359
rob is my favorite RS writer/author on all-things music. from his books on life through the lens of pop musicâbowie, beatles + duran duran songs, respectively, i wouldnât trust anyone elseâs TS review. he articulately captures how i feel, as a fan from album one.. i look forward to better understanding 'reputationâ with each spin, though i canât help but miss the classic introspective ballads.
* DIVIDE - ed sheeran
a fantastically diverse record. once again, sheeran proves he can break all of the boundaries + stay true to himself as an artist. he does it all so well, without appearing to care what anyone else thinks. âdiveâ is a bold, beautiful statement i continue to come back to + feel just the same. the record punches + dances in all the right places, from beginning to end, begging to be played on repeat.
* LIFE CHANGES - thomas rhett
thomas rhett gifted us the quintessential road trip singalong soundtrack record of the year. the day after it was born was spent on a bus from chicago to nashville, so when it wasnât playing through my earbuds, it was spinning on repeat in my mind. the title track still stands out clear + strong, though i thoroughly enjoyed a live taste of the addictive early maren morris duetââcraving youââback in february on the hometeam tour. itâs no wonder his career has catapulted with his seamless versatility in blending countryâs storytelling with pop musicâs neverending ear candy likeablity. this record excellently showcases rhettâs range from anthemic radio jams to heartbreaker ballads and true-to-life tales in between.
* FROM A ROOM (vol 1 + 2) - chris stapleton
stapleton released music this year in two parts, dubbing them âfrom A roomâ volumes 1 + 2ânot just any room, â'Aâ roomâ being nashvilleâs historic RCA studio A. some songs included in the collection were written up to a decade ago; ones chosen as they still ring true to the bearded, believable-as-they-come singer/songwriter.
on the authenticity of his craft, stapleton says, âI canât really speak to why people like what we do. Hopefully, they know what we do is authentically us, and that goes over no matter what kind of music youâre playing. People will kind of hear that and connect with that in ways they wouldnât if you were trying to be something that you think might be popular; I think thatâs always a mistake in music, maybe even in life. Do something 'cause itâs in your heart, do something 'cause itâs what youâre supposed to be doing.â
âbroken halosâ + âsecond one to knowâ will, to me, always conjure up memories of seeing him open for tom petty and the heartbreakers at wrigley field, on their 40th anniversary tour, this summer. music is medicine and these honest-to-the-bone tunes are instant classics as well as a balm for the soul.
* FIRST CIGARETTE - travis meadows
âwe rise. we climb. we shine like broken stars.â
the above is perhaps the defining statement of next-level nashville singer/songwriter, travis meadowsâ 2017 studio album, 'first cigarette.â the veteran of a different kind of war, thereâs not much meadows hasnât faced in lifeâcancer, heartbreak, addiction, depression.. and no story is off-limits for the wonderfully raw-voiced, honest-as-they-come artist. each song stays true to travisâ heart, some a little more uncomfortably authentic than accessible (ie radio-friendly), but thatâs the way meadows prefers his craft.
âunderdogs,â âpontiac,â âhungry,â + âbetter boatâ stand out from first listen, yet each track was chosen to land where they do in the lineup + in the heart of the listener.
Rolling Stone writes, âTo his most ardent fans and peers, including Eric Church, Dierks Bentley and Jake Owen, who have all cut Meadowsâ songs for their respective albums, his open-book approach to his craft is his greatest gift. But Meadows lives in fear of rejection. That ever-lingering sense of distrust remainsâŠ
[On having label support backing a project for the first time]:
"It validates all of the suffering that I went through to get here,â Meadows says. âIt gives it purpose.â
âI try not to be too hard on myself,â Meadows continues, âbut I donât deserve any of this. So Iâm grateful for every inch I get walking that mile.â
* STEEL TOWN - steve moakler
steel town had only been out for nine days + iâd woken up with these songs in my head, every morning. iâm partial to âwheelsâ + âgoldâ + âsummer without herâ (co-written with + ft. my favorite-for-so-long, sarah buxton!!) + the title track, but i cannot pick a favorite, friends. the long wait from 'wide openâ to this one was oh-so-worth it. thanks for another heartfelt record filled with story songs i can spin for years + years to come. seriously, donât sleep on this love letter to a historically hardworking hometown.
* BRETT ELDREDGE - brett eldredge
âBrett Eldredgeâs self-titled third album is the Number One country album this week. The Illinois native also scored the highest all-genre chart position of his career, landing at Number Two on the Billboard 200, behind Kendrick Lamarâs LP Damn.â - Rolling Stone (August 15)
eldredge is both effortless + earnest, perfectly showcasing his ability + personality on the record he calls, âthe most [himself].â from the playful first single, âsomethinâ iâm good atâ to the heartfelt vulnerability of âcastaway,â listeners experience all-sides of the equal parts smooth sinatra, fun-loving country crooner. the standouts are story songsââthe long wayâ is dreamlike while âno stopping youâ is wistfulâboth shine brilliantly on studio LP number three.

By day, Jennifer Turner works in law enforcement in Vancouver. But on this particular late August weekend, sheâs in Cleveland, attending JemCon, an annual gathering for devotees of the colorful Eighties cartoon Jem and the Holograms. Turnerâs fandom runs deep. She grew up with a single father who supported her love for all things Jem. One Christmas, she woke up to find he had bought her every single Jem-related doll available at the time; other times, he would set an alarm and wake her up early so she could watch the show before school.
âIt was such an escape, and so different from the regular narratives that you had about mom and dad,â Turner says of the cartoon, which follows the adventures of a philanthropic-minded orphan named Jerrica â proprietor of an orphanage for teenage girls, the Starlight House â who has a rock-star secret identity/alter-ego, Jem. âI think I identified a little bit with Jem losing her parents.â
In hindsight, Turner, who sports a detailed, full-color tattoo of Jem on her right calf and ink depicting a rival bandleader named Pizzazz on her left calf, also recognizes how the show informed her feminist worldview. âHere was a heroine that owned her own business, was a humanitarian, ran an orphanage, took care of her sister. [She] had a romance, but it was never the whole point of the story. It was about her, and her career. It whisked me away.â
For many, Jem is a forgotten retro footnote. The cartoon had a relatively short lifespan â 65 episodes aired between 1985 to 1988 â and the accompanying doll line enjoyed only a brief burst of popularity. But for fans such as Turner, Jem was a life-changing phenomenon.
Thirty years after the cartoon initially went off the air, and three years after a poorly received live-action feature-film reboot, the Jem universe â or âmulti-universes,â in the words of Samantha Newark, who provided the speaking voice for both Jem and Jerrica on the cartoon â remains a vibrant, creative space. Jem lives on via fan art and detailed websites dedicated to the brand. T-shirts mash upJem characters with art in the styles of Duran Duran, Queen, Mötley CrĂŒe, Poison and the Misfits (who share a name with the Hologramsâ rival band on the show). Thereâs also Truly Outrageous: A Jem Fan Film, a Kickstarter-funded live-action short named after a key line in the chorus of the showâs theme song, and a Spain-made short film, MisfitSized. Newark has even compiled a âJem Drag Starsâ playlist on her YouTube channel, featuring detailed makeup tutorials and drag performances themed around the characters.
That same dedication permeates âHow Rock & Roll Infiltrated Saturday Morning Cartoons,â an unofficial JemCon kickoff panel discussion and Q&A. Held at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the event features appearances from three luminaries in the Jemuniverse: Newark; series creator Christy Marx; and cartoonist Keith Tucker, a storyboard artist on many of the showâs music videos.
Newark, a beaming presence with cascades of auburn hair, trills one of her characterâs signature lines into the mic: âItâs showtime, Synergy!â All three speakers have an easy rapport as they share behind-the-scene tidbits from the cartoon. At one point, Marx draws gasps of wonder by revealing she once pitched a Jem episode set in the Rock Hall that never moved forward.
As the Q&A wraps up, a young woman standing against the wall raises her hand and shares that her name is Jherica âand that she is, in fact, named after Jemâs non-rock-star persona. Incredibly, Jherica Belle isnât from Cleveland and hadnât heard about JemCon but just happened to be in town for a work conference and decided to visit the Rock Hall, where she came upon the panel. Her close friends and family call her Jem, Belle shares later via e-mail. âNo more than a handful,â she writes. âNot everyone can call me Jem. That name is special.â
Jem and the Holograms was originally created by Sunbow Productions to promote a line of rock & roll-themed dolls produced by toy giant Hasbro, whose other properties included G.I. Joe and My Little Pony. The original Jem doll line is a New Wave fever dream encompassing neon-hued clothing, shoes, accessories and musical instruments. Some toys even came packaged with actual playable cassettes featuring original songs heard in the cartoon.
The show expanded on the dollsâ backstory. After the death of her parents, an ambitious young woman named Jerrica suddenly finds herself running an orphanage and owning half of her late fatherâs record company, Starlight Music. Simultaneously, Jerrica discovers that her dad created a smart computer named Synergy, who informs the budding music exec that her magical, star-shaped âJemstar Earringsâ can create holograms that allow her to assume the identity of a rock star. Cue the formation of the band Jem and the Holograms, whose lineup features Jerricaâs younger sister, keyboardist Kimber and two adopted sisters: guitarist Aja and drummer Shana.
The showâs 65 episodes boast plenty of over-the-top drama and narrative cliffhangers. Jerricaâs Starlight Music CEO competition is Eric Raymond, a slimy character who constantly tries to sabotage and undermine her. Jem and the Holograms do battle both onstage and off with the Misfits, a gang of felonious (if musically talented) mean girls managed by Raymond. Jerrica also takes care of the Starlight Girls, the foster children who live at Starlight House, and navigates her relations with boyfriend Rio. In true fantasy-land fashion, Rio also falls in love with Jem, but never discovers that the two women are one and the same.
âItâs a character-driven show,â says Christy Marx. âBasically a soap opera for kids is what it was â [or] ended up being anyway.â
This cartoon drama mirrored the press-inflated real-life drama involving the toy lines. As it goes with many real-life female musicians, Jem was often pitted against another female talent: Mattelâs doll juggernaut Barbie. An October 1986 Los Angeles Times article,âBarbie Takes Up Rock ânâ Roll to Match Rival Jem,â detailed the emergence of Barbie and the Rockers, a line of rock-themed dolls that debuted in stores shortly before Jem did.
The competition was at least healthy. According to an August 1987 Los Angeles Times story, Jem had sold more than 3 million dolls to date, and the cartoon was drawing 2.5 million young viewers each week, âmaking it the third most-watched childrenâs program in syndication.â Unfortunately, Jemâs pop-cultural moment was short-lived: The animated series was canceled in 1988 due to the doll lineâs decreasing popularity.
The ongoing fascination with Jem and the Holograms certainly has something to do with nostalgia. Yet Jem isnât like most childrenâs entertainment. The showâs sophisticated story lines often involved heavy real-world issues; for example, a runaway hotline was flooded with calls after the phone number ran at the end of one episode. Plus, even minor characters have elaborate backstories, making the show feel more like an adaptation of a novel rather than a cartoon spun off from a toy line.
According to Newark, it was by design that the characters on Jem felt like three-dimensional people. âOur reads had to be very real,â she explains. âThey didnât want cartoony. They were like, âNo, we want the kids to look up to you, like youâre their older sisters, or their friends.'â
The quality and care that went into Jemâs narratives extended to its in-episode animated videos, whose original music and lyrics also promoted thought-provoking messages. âYou might dismiss [the songs] as cheesy, but theyâre not,â says Ari Gold, who provided the singing voice for the character Ba Nee, an eight-year-old Vietnamese orphan who was losing her sight. âThe messages are good; theyâre complex; theyâre messages that we still need to hear today. Thereâs really almost a Jem song about every situation in life.â
Gold, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, notes that their characterâs signature song, âA Father Should Be,â is âabout the ideal father that so many of us didnât have.â As another example, they cite âAlone Again,â a rather serious song touching on depression and feeling self-conscious that was sung by a young character dealing with drug addiction. âI mean, this is a cartoon in the Eighties for children. This is before Oprah was talking about this stuff,â Gold says with a laugh. âIt was so ahead of its time in so many ways.â
The lyrics were set to equally high-quality music, courtesy of coâcomposer-arranger Anne Bryant, who noted in a 2009 interview that the Hologramsâ songs were orchestrated with real horns, woodwinds and strings, while the Pizzazz-led Misfits tunes had electronic elements and guitars. â[Anne Bryant] was writing pop music, but with a lot of key changes,â says Britta Phillips, who was the singing voice of Jem and is now better known as a member of the band Luna and duo Dean & Britta.
âIt was all very sophisticated, and not simple vocally at all,â Phillips says. âI feel like I really learned how to sing doing that. I had a really powerful and high voice, but not a lot of nuance or flexibility or any of that until I started doing the Jem stuff. That all came from that, from working with Anne.â
The showâs smart, non-pandering approach can be traced to Marx, who is revered by fans. Stefan Spierings recalls being âextremely nervousâ before he and his cousin Rob met Marx at the 2007 JemCon. âTo us, it was almost like meeting Madonna,â the Netherlands native says. âSheâs one of our heroes.â A cosplay fanatic named Raven, who published her first book in 2016 under the pen name Evelyn Whitney, could be seen furiously scribbling notes during one of Marxâs JemCon presentations and also considers the creator a writing role model. âI want my career to look like hers,â she says.
The respect is mutual, however. As JemCon unfolds, itâs clear that Marx, who also wrote 23 episodes, takes her role as the shepherd of Jemâs legacy quite seriously, and answers fan questions about character motivations with care and respect. The attention to detail makes sense: Marx grew up an ardent fan of comic books, and worked in TV production before becoming a writer.
When Marx signed on to the Jem project, certain elements were already locked in place, including the rock-star premise and the Jem/Jerrica secret identity. Yet many other elements were in flux, right down to character names (Jem was originally known as âMâ). Marx also recalls being given conflicting directions as she began to flesh out and develop Jemâs world. âThey said, âOK, itâs a girlâs property, and itâs got to be romance and fashion and glitter and glamour,â and all of this stuff. âBut weâre afraid the boys might change the dial, so thereâs got to be action!'â She laughs. âIt was really interesting how they were trying to juggle all of this.â
Despite such seemingly divergent directives, she says working with Sunbow Productions was âa dreamâ and adds that Hasbro was, for the most part, âhands off. They had moments, perhaps, when they exerted a bit of control over certain stories, but not much. They really let us have a lot of creative freedom.â That helps to explain why Jem explored deeper themes than other cartoons of the time and featured such a stereotype-breaking female lead. Jem herself is a quintessentially Eighties icon, a fashion plate with a shock of pink hair and cutting-edge outfits whoâs also whip smart and a total boss. Despite the tragedies Jerrica/Jem has faced, she seemingly has it all: a fun, glamorous and successful life full of romance, rock and responsibility.
The cartoonâs progressive approach toward ethnic diversity â Holograms member Aja is Asian-American and Shana is black â also resonated with fans such as Christina Santisteban, who sports pink glitter eyeshadow, a blue wig and a yellow lace dress. âThere were very few other cartoons that were so diverse in its characters, and so inclusive,â she says. âWhere do you get a girl band that had sisters that were of different backgrounds? It was very, very well representative of what the ideal should be, in a sense. Jem was a wonderful microcosm.â
For all of Jemâs over-the-top flash, the show also offered subtler messaging to some fans. â[The show] did have an unconscious appeal to the LGBT community, because [of] the secret identity, and being afraid of people finding out and using it against you,â says Garth Jensen, whoâs known in the fan community for his seamless custom mashups of Jem cartoon songs with Eighties hits such as New Orderâs âBlue Mondayâ or Belinda Carlisleâs âHeaven Is a Place on Earth.â âAnd just the idea that it was OK to be different â and it was OK to have that side of yourself that was fabulous, and you could bring that out. Being your true self is your ultimate goal.â
Will Edwardson, who boasts colorful, intricate tattoos of the faces of the Misfits and Holograms on his right arm, had a similar takeaway from the cartoon. As a gay teenager growing up in rural Kentucky, he turned to music for solace. âIt was a comfort for me, because I was, of course, an outcast,â he says. â[I] didnât fit in in my area. Being gay was just not the thing to be. It was pretty lonely and isolated.â
Developing an affinity for Jem and the Hologramsâ music- and glitz-filled premise was a natural next step. âIâve always loved movies and [been] attracted to showbiz and fame,â he says. âSo hereâs a show of someone who has a dual identity â you have to be someone here, and you have to be someone else here â along with the music, the colors and the clothes. I just identified so much with that.â
Neither Marx nor Newark were aware of how much of an impact Jem had when it originally aired. But as Newark has started attending more conventions, and met fans, sheâs seen the showâs profound, enduring effect on people.
âI have a lot of criers,â she says. âThey just burst into tears. Nostalgiaâs so powerful, and I realized quite a long time ago that I am custodian of something very precious, and I take it seriously. Theyâre, of course, like, crying and apologizing, and Iâm like, âNo, I understand.â Theyâre suddenly eight years old again, or five years old, or however old they were. And the showâs just meant so much to them.â
Jenny Dumlao â a gregarious, enthusiastic New Yorker who traveled to JemCon with her two daughters, eight-year-old Aurora May and six-year-old Leilani â in particular gets extremely emotional when she talks about the ways Jem has provided her with guidance and comfort throughout her life. Born in the Philippines, she moved around frequently as a child after coming to the U.S., and fell in love with Jem early on. In fact, she and one of her best friends would play âradioâ using a boombox, and pretend to be DJs talking over the Jem music cassettes â idle play which sparked a lifelong love of music and even a future foray into real-life radio DJâing.
â[The show] stays with you, and you experience it in so many different ways as youâre getting older,â she says, adding that she also sees now how big of an impression the showâs ethnic diversity left on her. âI was a kid that would get very excited if there was a character that was like me. And so Aja was the first favorite character. Because youâre like, âOh, sheâs Asian, but not only that, sheâs so cool â and sheâs so smart.'â A few minutes later, she becomes overcome with emotion as she talks about the power of this representation. âI donât know, as a parent and just even back then, thatâs really important to me in media, seeing yourself.â
When her daughters were old enough, Dumlao naturally introduced them to Jem and the Holograms. This introduction came at a time when she was leaving the girlsâ father, as their relationship had turned toxic. âSometimes bad things would be happening, and our safe space was in my room, in the bedroom away from stuff,â Dumlao recalls. âAnd we would watch [Jem].
âI didnât think it was happening at the time, but I know based on how [the girls] would talk about the show that it was helping us in those times,â she adds. âAnd sometimes it was helping me too â whether at that moment I was getting inspiration, or whether I feel like I was going to a simpler time.â
Dumlao and her girls are in a much better place these days. Unsurprisingly, both Aurora May and Leilani are now mega-knowledgeable Jem fans in their own right. (During Friday night trivia, although they seem to be concentrating on coloring, they very quietly answer some difficult questions correctly.) Dumlao recognizes their Jem fandom might not always persist in the same form, but she sees how theyâve soaked up lessons from the cartoon, including the value of hard work, as well as the idea that girls can be anything and everything they want to be.
âI remember one time the girls said to me, âYouâre like Jerrica â you work really hard, Mama,'â she recalls. âAnd I was like, âWow. Thank you for noticing that.'â
JemCon kicks off bright and early on Saturday morning with toy designer Stefanie Eskander, who draws a rapt audience to a fascinating, photo-packed presentation covering her time working on Hasbroâs Jem doll line back in the Eighties. To the delight of everyone in the conference room, at one point she reveals her original concept art for Jemâs pet llama, Rama Llama, a fan-favorite cult item that ended up being available only as a mail-in incentive.
People furiously snap photos of a slide featuring Eskanderâs drawing of the pink-hued animal, which she initially named Dolli Llama and gave accessories such as a smart bowler hat and hatbox. For a capper on the reveal, she pulls out a prototype llama figure thatâs pale yellow, not shocking pink; it occupied a prominent place on her art table in the vendor room all weekend, a mini-celebrity in its own right.
Over the three-day weekend, more than 140 people from all around the world â two attendees short of the all-time JemCon attendance record â will converge on (and brighten up) this otherwise nondescript suburban Double Tree Hilton. The JemCon agenda is packed with activities, including trivia, a costume masquerade and late-night disco, panel discussions, karaoke, a charity auction, and a vendor room full of Jem ephemera for sale and display.
Loyalists devour this kind of minutiae, and have impressive knowledge of every inch of Jemâs narrative world, judging by Friday nightâs competitive trivia round. (Sample: âThis San Diego Comic Con-exclusive doll had issues with mold in the packaging.â) The Jem-inspired cosplaying is also truly, truly outrageous (and impressive). A willowy 17-year-old named Erica Hill â an aspiring graphic designer who âbecame totally obsessedâ with the Jem and the Holograms cartoon via TV reruns â sports three separate outfits painstakingly constructed by her mom, Andrea, from a combination of thrift store finds and homemade flourishes. âSheâs a MacGyver when it comes to birthing cosplay ideas,â Erica says proudly.
JemCon founder Liz Pemberton, who came to Jem after she started collecting the dolls in the early 2000s, launched the convention in July 2005 as a one-day event at the University of Minnesota. That initial installment drew 50 people and, from there, JemCon has happened every year since then in various cities. âWhich astounds me,â Pemberton says with a laugh. Even more impressive, JemCon is still a very grassroots, DIY effort: It doesnât have huge sponsors, and is a volunteer effort planned by a different person or group of people each year.
âI just wanted to get people together to look at our [doll] shoes and fashions,â says Pemberton, a thoughtful speaker who wears her silver-gray hair pulled back into a ponytail. âThat it has grown into this much more comprehensive [thing], and that it has become such a welcoming place for such a diverse lot of people, continues to amaze me and makes me very happy.â
In Cleveland, every JemCon attendee has a different story to tell about how they came to Jem or why the franchise is meaningful to them. Thereâs Ankur Malhotra and TJ Schuessler, who started dating after they met at JemCon; Ilana Pernica, who has fiery red hair and cat-eye glasses and stresses with great urgency that she is the biggest fan of the Stingers, a fictional band introduced later in the series; and first-time attendee Becky Scott, who first loved Jem after hearing cassettes of the music.
Many fans have traveled great distances to JemCon or have parlayed their fandom into a career. Italy native Davide Quatraro learned English from watching the cartoon and now works in the dubbing industry; in fact, he even translated the Jem and the Hologramsmovie into Italian. âIt was a huge thing,â he says, âwhen you can have your greatest passion turn into a job.â
As a kid, Rachel Pankiw â host and organizer of the Cleveland JemCon â was first drawn to Jem and the Holograms by the bright, eye-catching packaging of a VHS tape. But once she watched the cartoon, she saw her own life reflected in the story lines. âI really related to this whole story of the Starlight Girls, and the whole thing with kids not getting attention or getting left out,â she said, adding that her parents were divorced when she was small, and her dad wasnât around much.
Independent of one another, and without prompting, multiple people express that JemCon feels like a family, which would be a clichĂ© if it didnât feel so absolutely true. This inclusivity isnât just lip service, confirms Will Edwardsonâs husband, Steve. âIâve made a lot of good friends here,â he says. âWith him being the collector and the one into Jem â and me being a supporter â theyâve made me feel very welcome.â In fact, the soft-spoken Southerners decided to get married in a surprise ceremony at the 2010 JemCon in New Hampshire, since same-sex marriage was then still outlawed in their home state of Tennessee. âWe talked about it, and we said, âWhat other place to get married than at JemCon?'â Steve says.
Pemberton gets choked up while mentioning the Edwardsonsâ JemCon marriage, and that Malhotra and Schuessler also connected romantically there. âTheir lives have changed,â she says. âYou donât go into a convention going, âIâm going to change peopleâs lives.'â She laughs. âJust the way you donât write a cartoon going, âIâm going to change peopleâs lives.'â
Certainly those attending JemCon represent a cross-section of the most dedicated Jem and the Holograms fans. Pemberton realizes that, in the greater scheme of pop-culture fandom, the brandâs impact is small. When she attended the official 2010 Barbie convention to promote JemCon â while dressed as the Misfits band member Pizzazz, bright green wig and all â ânobody recognized me,â she says, save for one man she knew from the Jem message board. But an interesting twist, Pemberton recalls that there were dancers dressed as Barbie and the Rockers at the convention who âmade some joke about Jem and Jerrica, some little insult kind of joke.â She laughs as she adds, âAnd Iâm like, âMattel certainly knows who Jem is still!'â
That Jem and the Holograms hasnât been given more of a modern second chance is curious. Nostalgia for Eighties cartoons shows no signs of abating, judging by the popularity of modern iterations of My Little Pony and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and a buzzed-about new Netflix reboot, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Unfortunately, the cartoonâs polarizing reemergence into pop culture has something to do with it: The 2015 Jem and the Holograms movie was lambasted by critics (it has a 20-percent-fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating) and earned an anemic $2.3 million worldwide at the box office.
Perhaps because the show remains a cultural underdog, fans are intensely loyal to the franchise and its principals. Newark has parlayed her time with Jem into a musical career, and records danceable synth pop in the vein of Kylie Minogue or early Lady Gaga, while Britta Phillips too has Jem fans come see her live. âThe confidence it gave me later in life, hearing that people were still so into [Jem], has given me confidence as a musician, in my singing,â she says. âIt took me a long time to make a solo album, but I made one a couple of years ago, and the Jem fans were so supportive of that even though it sounds nothing like Jem.â
Unsurprisingly, JemCon attendees also have very detailed opinions over why the 2015 Jem movie does (and doesnât) succeed. âChristy Marx wasnât given the opportunity to write the movie,â says Katie Brandt, whoâs attending JemCon with her younger sister, Colleen OâLeary. âThatâs why it didnât work; thatâs why it fell apart.â This isnât an assertion out of left field: Even producer Jason Blum apparently admitted in June that the movie should have had Marx involved.
Still, Marx did make a cameo in the film, portraying Lindsey Pierce, a Rolling Stone reporter, and received a warm welcome on the set â to the extent that when she asked to change some of her lines, she was given a green light with no hesitation. Marx is also extremely complimentary toward the actresses in the movie, even as she too expresses wishes that she had been involved with the writing.
âI think that the essence of Jem got lost, and we lost a great opportunity to genuinely reboot Jem,â she says. âIâve had so many ideas over the years â of ways to reboot Jem, to bring it back, to rejuvenate itâand yet could never get any traction to do that. And so I think itâs just a shame that opportunity didnât get pursued.â
âI think thereâs a lot that can be done to update it, but keep it true to its essence,â she adds. âSo I donât know if thatâs ever going to happen. I kind of doubt it at this point. â
Still, Jem is staying alive in pop culture. In recent years, Integrity Toys launched a high-end Jem and the Holograms doll collection. Thereâs a special edition, Jem-themed Manic Panic hair dye that glows under black light, while Adult Swimâs Robot Chicken has featured Jem in multiple episodes, once envisioning the character as a pop star whoâs fallen on hard times since her Eighties heyday, another time as a foul-mouthed sexpot. (For an even raunchier take on the show and characters, thereâs also a mega-NSFW fan parody on YouTube dubbed âJiz and the Mammograms.â) The original Jem cartoon is finding a new audience as well, in the form of a comprehensive DVD release and, in recent years, syndicated reruns on the Hub (later Discovery Family) and Netflix.
One of the most groundbreaking extensions of the Jem and the Holograms legacy is the IDW Publishing comic book series produced between 2015 and 2017 written by Kelly Thompson. The comics feature characters with body diversity â a particular strength of artist Sophie Campbell, who drew many of IDWâs Jem issues, Thompson says â and expand the backstories of some Jem regulars; for example, Holograms keyboardist Kimber and Misfits keytarist Stormer are openly gay. Later in the series, the comic also introduced a musician named Blaze who is a transgender woman.
âI was interested primarily in drawing out the spirit of the original, which was incredibly diverse for its time, and making sure we continued that tradition by modernizing it and making it even more diverse,â Thompson says.
At JemCon, the Saturday evening festivities especially embody Jemâs spirit of diversity, and playful music and fashion. The impressive costume contest possesses both an abundance of inside jokes and attention to detail. Cherise âTootieâ Sims, whoâs cosplaying as Jemâs boyfriend, Rio â specifically as he is in an episode where he kicks a plant in frustration â draws raucous laughter as she mimes kicking a tiny manicured fake plant with exaggerated anger. A veteran JemCon attendee named Jacques, whoâs dressed as Jerricaâs late father, Emmett Benton, sports a lab coat and carries a working, light-up prototype of supercomputer Synergy.
With a giant smile on her face, Raven sweeps around the room wearing a floor-length cloak over a black miniskirt and yellow print leggings; sheâs portraying a character dressed like an oracle, as seen in the beloved episode âMidsummer Nightâs Madness.â Pittsburgh resident Danna Kurela glides gracefully in a costume handmade on her embroidery machine: a shiny gold dress with a fur-trimmed collar based on the Integrity doll lineâs Glitter ân Gold Jem. The eventual winners are Dumlao â who draws laughter as she does ballet moves around the floor while dressed as Synergy, complete with purple body paint and a silver jumpsuit â and her girls, cosplaying as Jem and Jerrica.
Once the contest is over, the musical portion of the night kicks into high gear. Jem-themed musical karaoke goes longer than itâs supposed to, simply because everyone is having so much fun belting out the songs from the show, although Dumlao (under her DJ name, Jenny Doom) eventually packs the dance floor by spinning an all-killer mix of tunes: Prince, the B-52s, Madonna, Cardi B, Sugarhill Gang. The time ticks away toward midnight, and JemCon has been going full steam for nearly 15 hours.
Plans are already in motion for the next JemCon, which will take place in September 2019, in Buffalo, New York. An agenda and guest list are still being worked out, but itâs safe to say many in attendance in Cleveland are already looking forward to next year.
âI meet so many little kids now,â Newark says. âSome of them come in full cosplay, like a little tiny Pizzazz or a little Jem. I always wondered if [the cartoon] would translate, because it was set in the Eighties, but they donât care. They love the whole thing: the color, the music, the sparkle, the glamour. [There are] new little Jem boys and Jem girls running around. Itâs so cool.â
âThe characters, the stories, the emotional elements of it, the fashion, the music,â Marx adds, âI mean, it all came together in a perfect storm, and became this amazing phenomenon thatâs called Jem.â
