Regarding "Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956", would you say you were consciously reading it with an eye to reviewing its technical merits, ie reliable sources, and analysing them well, or was it more reading for pleasure - or indeed, are the two one and the same? Or is it something completely different to any of those?
I read it for a couple reasons, first being that I am currently focusing on Eastern European history, politics, and international relations in the new degree, and second that it is something I am genuinely interested in both on its own behalf and for present-day resonances. So I am reading it as a trained historian but also because I am interested in the subject and want to learn more, so it's not like I'm just confirming stuff that I already know. On which, a few quick points on how to read like a historian:
I admire Anne Applebaum's stuff a lot, and it has earned external acclaim: for example her previous book Gulag won the Pulitzer Prize. This is a good indication that an author has legitimate credentials and strong research about the topic at hand, and that it has been recognized by multiple international experts and prize bodies. Obviously, not every book needs to have won the Pulitzer to prove its usefulness, but it does mean that it comes from a historian who has received thorough and positive peer review on the highest level. I also recommend her book Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine.
Next, she is upfront about how she approached her sources, where she found them, and the language and access logistics. She is based in Warsaw, speaks Polish and Russian, and was able to directly translate sources in those languages; for Iron Curtain, she names her research assistants/translators in Hungarian and German and which archives they were working in. She notes that it took six years to write the book because of the necessity of consulting these far-flung document archives in different places; she has also conducted some in-person interviews. There is an extensive bibliography and direction for future reading. As well, despite the complexity of her subject, she is a very clear and easy-to-follow writer; someone who was approaching the book and knew relatively little about the regions or the major research questions would be able to follow along. I have recently read several history books where I was interested in the topic and wanted to follow along, but the writing was unnecessarily murky, unclear, or convoluted, and which made it difficult to keep up, even in those books written and published by a popular press.
Next, while she obviously wants to explore the problems of these societies and the phenomenon of totalitarian government in detail, she attempts to present both perspectives: both why these societies were initially attractive, the social and political factors of destroyed postwar Europe that enabled their implementation, and what ordinary people thought and experienced in response. While she is very clear that this was a Soviet effort based in Moscow and based on Stalinist principles, she also underlines that it was not just a situation of one-way agency where totalitarian principles were being unilaterally imposed on a hapless population without any local collaboration or support. She explores the reasons why local East German/Polish/Hungarian authorities decided to cooperate (or not cooperate) with the occupying authoritarian power, how people in each of those places did the same, and the fact that the totalitarian project was indeed made possible largely because of this collaboration (and when the collaboration was revoked, it instantly ran into major difficulties). That is an important lesson for the present day when we are looking at those organizations, corporations, and individuals that have already pre-emptively offered their support to a fascist government, and are acting in happy accordance with it.
As such, in short-ish summary, there are several ways to read a popular-press history book: for the analysis of technical/historical skills, to consider how the narrative is presented and the conclusions that are drawn, the bibliography and resources that are offered, simply because I am interested in the topic and want to learn more, and because it has important lessons for the present day. So yes.

@ the Emilia Perez anon - The guy who made the film totally said 'I'm gonna do a nifty trans metaphor in a Mexican setting but I already know everything about everything so I don't need to look any deeper before I try handling two sensitive and nuanced subjects that are firmly outside my lived experience, that's cool right?' And like, no dude. That's how you wind up pissing people off and disrespecting/misrepresenting at least one of the subjects you're dealing with.
In my (deeply subjective) opinion, he liked the trans narrative and metaphor of starting a new life but didn't care about the Mexico side nearly as much as he apparently thought he did. And the metaphor is compelling as hell! Never been seen before! But because he played the know it all card what could have been a layered, nuanced, challenging, emotional, enlightening look at complex topics is now all ambition with only brief moments of follow through built on a bed of ignorance so severe that it's harmful (and therefore the follow through hardly matters).
The situation as a whole calls for a little nuance, including the frustrating fact that all the general public will ever know or care about is that a trans film beat Wicked at the Golden Globes, which helps legitimize trans narratives in their eyes. But for actual trans, queer, and Mexican people it's a case of 'yeah but did it have to be THAT one ffs?' I feel like it was a similar situation with Crash and...damn I know there's a good queer example too but I can't think of it at the moment.
#GW Asks#The casting and production aspect can really get into hair splitting#because *technically* if you look for actors of the exact ethnicity and *legitimately* don't find what you're looking for#or someone you want isn't available so you have to go adjacent#that's a thing that can and does happen (productions have to prioritize pragmatism a lot or nothing would get made)#but nobody's gonna give him that kind of benefit of the doubt because his ass doesn't deserve it#Ditto with the filming location thing#being unable to film in the actual location can happen for any number of legit logistical/practical reasons#but also creative ones in the way he said he specifically wanted sound stages for the vision and feel he was going for#But when everything else about your production is built on half assing and ignorance we're not extending you that courtesy man!#Next time maybe research and dive deeper into the the shit you're spending years of your life to make! Fuck!#Okay rant over

How do gods, vampires and the afterlife work in Castlevania?
Okay, now with Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 I absolutely get to speculate a bit more about how the worldbuilding in the world of this anime actually works.
To catch everyone up with my speculations up until this point, let me quickly get you to speed. So far I assumed the following:
Vampires in this world probably go back to some sort of magic or alchemy, which has to have happened before 1500 BC (given that we know Morana was turned around that time).
There is only one afterlife, where every soul ends up, no matter what they believed in and what they did in life.
At least the "old gods" are real, possibly by some variation of the "clap your hands if you believe" rules. Meaning: It is possible that gods have started to exist, because people believed in them.
So, let me quickly go over the different aspects - on the basis of what we now know from Nocturne season 2.
Vampires
Now, we definitely do not get any answer so far with the question of where vampires come from in this universe. But we got a confirmation for a suspicion that I had all the time: There were not vampires in the Americas before colonial contact. (Though I might note, that this also means that the excuse a variety of people used to make up for the fact that the first four seasons had tomatoes and bell peppers - vampires had already been to America - was also wrong.)
In Nocturne we also do not only see one person being turned into a vampire, but in fact three different people. Tera, Drolta and Mizrak.
From this we can gather that generally speaking the universe works under the established rule of the "baptism of blood", as established in the Dracula novel. Meaning: If a vampire wants to turn someone else into a vampire, that person usually needs to be bitten first, before needing to drink the blood of the vampire. This seems to hold true for Tera and Mizrak at least - though we do not technically see Olrox feed Mizrak his blood, though it seems to be implied.
Drolta in this regard is interesting. Because from the sequence that sees her turned, she does not seem to get bitten. While the vampire injures her, there does not seem to be a bite. She only gets some of his blood and drinks it of her own volition.
I have seen some speculation if there needs to be some will or want involved in the turning of a vampire because of this. Does someone have to want to be a vampire - or at least want to not die? I am not sure, but it is interesting.
We also know with season clearly that whatever we assume a soul is: Vampires have it.
Other than that... We do not know how often vampires need to feed. However, given that we know they can journey over the Atlantic, it is probably not quite as much, given that the travel between Europe and the Americas in the time took about three to four weeks, and if a vampire would need to feed too often, I doubt that would end well. (Vampire feeding for the most part is a very logistical problem - but that is a topic for another day.)
Other than that, it seems that outside of the general inability to go out into direct sunlight, most typical vampire weaknesses do not seem to apply. They can go into churches, they seem to have a reflection in the mirror, and they can cross water no problem.
The Afterlife
So, from the very beginning I have been firm on one thing: While everything the show establishes seems to suggest that there is heaven and hell, I do not believe this. I was very sold on the idea that there is only one afterlife basically since the beginning, but especially since season 3.
The reason are two: Firstly, we know of at least one vampire in this world (Morana) who very much predates the concept of hell, which only came up in the 4th century. Sure, technically you can argue that Hinduism and some other religions also have a hell or a "bad place" to go after death, but generally, hell as known in Abrahamitic believes only came up in the 4th century. Given this is the case and this world does not ignore the fact that the rest of the darn world exists, it would make a lot of sense if hell was not real.
Secondly, we know the stories of two people ending up in hell, that in my understanding should not be there. That is Lisa for once, and also FlysEyes. I am sorry, but for what sin is Lisa supposed to be in hell? And she definitely is in the same place as Dracula, who definitely should be in hell, given the whole genocide and murder hobo thing. The same holds true for FlysEyes. Did he betray his friends? Yes, but he did so under torture. I am sorry, but I am not gonna assume that God really was so darn petty. Isaac also points that out in the dialogue.
However, Nocturne does bring up another possibility. And this possibility is, that this works rather under a varation of the "Clap your Hands" rules, specifically the one that American Gods seems to use. Which is basically: There is tons of different afterlives, and you will end up in whatever afterlife you align with the most. The reason for this obviously is, that we definitely know that the Ancestral Plane (a variation of which is part of a variety of both African and Asian religions) is a thing, as well as the Duat from Egyptian mythology.
And if we go by those "Clap your Hands" rules, it is obviously possible that FlysEyes ended up in what he perceived to be hell, because he felt guilty for betraying his friends, while Lisa might have wanted to go to hell, to meet with her husband again eventually. This would be interesting of course, because it would then mean that Mizrak would indeed have ended up in hell - just because he felt that he should.
The big question is, what this means right now for Forgemastery. We know at the very least that even vampire souls can be called back through it - both Drolta, and the resurrection of Dracula in the end of SV S4 proof this. But do souls for Forgemastery actually have to come from hell, or could forgemastery actually draw them from any hell whatsoever? That would be interesting to know.
Gods
In terms of the gods, Nocturne definitely so far implies some things about them. We definitely know now, that at least some of the "Old Gods" (I kinda love that the terminology used is the same one I keep using - not gonna lie here) are real. Namely we definitely know that Sekhmet, and Ogun exist, as well as Karfu and Papa Legba. If we all are not wrong about Olrox's background, Quetzalcoatl also very much exists or existed at some point. We also absolutely have some implications that at least some of the Christian demons and devils seem to exist to some extent. We already saw those fallen angels escape hell back in season 3, and now we have some more implications for maybe some other devils might exist for real too.
Ironically speaking though, we have so far absolutely no proof in one direction or the other, whether the Abrahamitic God with a capital-G exists in this world or not. Which I kinda understand - it is an iffy question to deal with in writing.
The question is, by which mechanic the gods exist. Does it work by "Clap your Hands if you Believe"? Or is there another mechanic that keeps them existing and presumably immortal? What happens to Gods, if nobody is left to believe in them? What happens if even their names are forgotten?
I talked a lot already about the Gaulic gods, who are a really prime example for this. There is plenty of gods from the Celtic pantheon of whom we found depictions in art, where we do not have the slightest idea how they are named, what their function was and so on. We know: "Someone painted this deity onto some pictures/made some statues" but that's all we know. What would this mean for this world?
It would be an interesting thing to find out. I wonder if we will ever learn this, should there be a season 3 or possibly another Castlevania series.

Hello! 😊
I have a character with albinism in my story and I need help figuring out what to do about her photophobia. The setting is a medieval fantasy world and the character is a dragon.
The problem I'm having is that she's huge. She's probably around the size of a blue whale.
I was going to give her sunglasses, but they would be absolutely massive and extremely heavy, and I feel like the weight of the frame pressing down on her skin all day would probably be extremely uncomfortable or even cause skin damage. Also, the glasses would probably be really thick and I'm not sure if she would even be able to see through that much tinted glass?
I thought about a hat, but I'm not sure what it would be made out of. I feel like any sort of fabric at that size would just crumple under its own weight. I could have supports inside of it, but that would probably make it really heavy which wouldn't be good for her neck.
The only other thing I can think of is some sort of semi-transparent fabric veil that she can tie around her head that covers her eyes, but I know that trope is kind of iffy. Although I'm not sure if it would count since she's not legally blind (her vision is around 20/100. I think. Would vision measurments still work the same for someone with giant eyeballs? 🤔)
Is there anything else I can give her to protect her eyes that won't hurt her?
If it makes a difference there are two blind characters in the story who do not wear glasses of any kind, and another character with albinism who wears sunglasses and a hat.
Hello!
I believe I'm the only active mod with photophobia so I'll try answering, but keep in mind I'm neither blind nor do I have albinism.
So photophobia is a spectrum, right - it's really wide. On one end you have people who can't open their eyes because of the pain unless they're in a completely blacked-out room and on the other are people who kinda just push through it and don't bother with anything. There's a huge variety in severity. I was on both of these (plus everything in-between, plus non-photophobic at one point too) so I'll try to give you some ideas.
If she's on the first end, then well - close the eyes, and hopefully she has a sighted guide. Sunglasses don't help here anyway (source: experience) unless she'd have to wear them while closing her eyes because the tiny amount of light showing through a person's eyelids can still be painful (source: experience). A hat or a veil here would be like putting a bandage on someone who blew up. If she's permanently like this, she's functionally totally blind (but with some stereotypes that don't really represent all totally blind people - most of them don't keep their eyes closed 24/7).
If she's on the second end then I already kinda answered your question; Nothing is sometimes a solution. Same how not everyone with knee pain uses a cane, even if it technically could be of some benefit - too much hassle.
Now for the hard part: everything in-between these two. Since your character is somewhat logistically complicated due to both being a dragon and of that size, I'll try to think of the accommodations one can do with their body rather than external aids.
Squinting is a legitimate strategy. Is it great, not really. But it does work for a lot of people. You can squint your way through a lot.
Hand (claw?) to shield against the sun, same as above. Most people (IDK about dragons) don't sit around in bright sun all day, if you quickly have to go through an area like this you can just cover it.
Brow ridge (no idea what is the dragon equivalent) is a sort of built-in sun protection on its own to be honest. It's definitely not 100% for obvious reasons, but it does help against the brightest light sources. However, with her being a dragon this could be a legitimately successful solution - both Eastern Asian and European dragons tend to be portrayed with protruding parts above their eyes. Normally I'd say that it would be a bit of a cop-out, but as you say there is another character with the same disability, so I'm not worried here.
Last solution would be some sort of contacts. Obviously they didn't exist in medieval times, but there's a dragon there already so it's fine to get creative - could shed scales be thinned down and used as a block-out contact? Maybe some sort of mineral? Or leaves from a comically big tree? All of these would definitely hurt a human but again, dragon anatomy and how tough their eyes are is free to speculate about until something very unexpected happens.
Now for the rest;
Consider her lifestyle and where she physically lives. Is there a lot of sun there? Does she go outside during the day? Does she prefer winter over summer because she can go out more (and/or with less pain)? Not all photophobiacs will have the same kind of lifestyle and will thus need different accommodations; keep that in mind.
Hope this helps! Good luck writing disabled dragons

Any particular thoughts on if all of the characters are going to get hometown events? On one hand, it seems like a good way for the devs to have a steady stream of easy story ideas and milk some money from hometown gatcha events. On the other hand, I can see some hometowns being logistically difficult to justify (I can’t think of a reason why Idia or Ortho would bring their schoolmates to their top-secret organization home) or potentially repetitive (Lilia, Silver, and Malleus feel like characters whose hometown events might be difficult to make distinct- Kalim too, if the Firelit Skies event didn’t count as his hometown event).
I guess they could pull a Vil and just have some of the characters go places that aren’t home. Idia could bring some people to an anime convention with him, or Lilia could play tour guide in a place he’s visited frequently. Of course, this all assumes the game’s going to last long enough to get to everyone, but it’s interesting to speculate.
I feel like every one of the main 22 NRC students will get some kind of travel abroad event with a related SSR eventually. They’re great for world building and for making the game $$$/j!! We’ve been colloquially calling these “hometown” events, but it’s kind of a misnomer. For example, Fairest City isn’t Vil’s; he is just traveling there for work-related reasons. This opens us up to the possibility of exploring locations other than students’ hometowns in events.
When you think about it, that makes some sense because there are many weird exceptions in the cast. To name just a few (this is by no means an exhaustive list)!! Cater’s family supposedly moves around a lot, so he has no “true” hometown. Riddle and Trey share the same hometown so if they both had “hometown” events we would theoretically explore the same place, no? We’ve technically already visited the Shroud brothers’ hometown, the Isle of Woe, in book 6. Lilia has a complicated history of traveling around a lot and is banished from the capital where he used to serve; what would count as his “hometown” here???
It would be easier for the devs to logistically justify + avoid repetition, as well as varied and more interesting lore-wise to expand where we can go rather than lock us down to “hometowns ONLY!!” You could get super creative with the reasons for going abroad and bumping into family members (or, as Tamashina Mina has established, not actual blood relatives of the SSR at all) 🤩 I love the idea of joining Idia for an anime con… maybe Silver revisiting the Land of Swords where the Dawn Knight fell in combat and rediscovering his heritage. Figuring out wtf is up with the whole Hunt family, maybe in an event framed like a murder mystery or exploring a jungle region? For Lilia, I’d love to visit his retirement-home-to-be the Land of Crimson Long :DD There are just so many exciting possibilities!!

Do you think the recording of TIT (bc it has to be getting recorded at some point tbh) will be a dvd release or a youtube upload this time around? I forget if Dan said any specific reason why WAD ended up being free on YT, but I feel like after setting that precedent, there's almost no going back. Ofc, there is the precedent of the two actual dnp tours being dvd or YT Red/Premium releases, but do you have any thoughts?
oh anon i'm so happy you asked. bc i did so much research for this about WAD before we knew what would happen with it.
so. the problem with dvds is storage capacity. with TIT being 2 hours, that is a lot of footage to put on a singular dvd at the resolution that they'd currently want to. dvds come in 2 sizes: 4.7 gb and 8.5 gb. you can fit a 2 hr movie onto a single layer (4.7) but any longer, and you need the double layer (8.5). thus, TIT would have to be on a double layer, unless they don't plan on including anything else except the 2 hr recording. a dvd can't play high resolution footage, only standard definition (480p). so there'd be a picture quality difference.
this is where blu-rays come in. they can store and play 1080p footage. they also hold significantly more space (a single layer blu-ray can hold 25 gb, a double 50 gb). part of the trade-off here though is that higher resolution footage takes up more space. a single layer can store 2.25 hr of HD video; a double 3 hrs. they could get away with a single layer, and that includes room for 2 hours of standard definition BTS video.
problem is, not everyone has a blu-ray player (not like everyone has dvd players either). but the main issue is that DVD players won't play blu-rays--and this includes disc drives for laptops and PC's. you need a special external driver to do it.
we'd be wading into contracts and companies being interested in selling physical copies, and given how discs in general are sort of becoming obsolete, i would be surprised if they put it on disc.
our next option would be streaming. i don't really see them wanting to attach it to any larger corporation--especially given they're physical media guys. the thought of just losing something simply because a streaming service doesn't want it anymore, or the company goes under, would be enough to keep them away from that.
people pitched the idea of nebula or dropout, but i don't see them posting a single video on nebula and then nothing else. and since i don't see them as patreon guys, i don't think they'd want to do incentives for subscription style stuff. dropout would be more of a possibility, but they'd probably want to do more with dropout in terms of guest starring before entirely handing their baby over, y'know? like hank did a whole d20 season before he did his special there.
i do think they might just upload it to dapg. genuinely. because of what happened with WAD--both rights wise and precedent wise. but also, could be extremely good for them if they can actually monetize it. their longer videos on dapg do very well, and since WAD happened before TIT was fully ironed out, i bet they've included the prospect of doing so into their scripting, so it has the ability to be monetized on their channel. plus, the desire to make it accessible for everyone (even though they are trying to tour in more countries). depending on how that goes, it may be delayed in being released online.
a lot of technical talk but i am so glad you asked anon, i love logistics discussion!

harker do you with think a particularly shrewd crow!rook would be able to effectively act as first talon through lucanis or do you think the crows would be too discerning? you don’t have to answer this obviously but i would be interested in your perspective of this.
i mean sure everything’s a possibility! i’m not going to be an arbiter on what anyone’s ocs can or cannot do
i don’t think there’s necessarily a logistical problem with rook not holding “legitimate” power; it’s the crows, not a monarchy, nobody outside your own house cares if you’re the Rightful Heir, just how vulnerable you look. if it’s pretty visible that you are taking command, the other crows are going to see that in a certain way, which could get spun to or against your advantage. one severe problem is probably caterina, because what is happening here technically speaking is that you, a crow from another house, are using your influence with her son to effectively lead her house. she relinquished her power to him, not to you. you can see how that could potentially get ugly
even if we establish that rook is very capable and can lead house dellamorte through whatever dangers, that doesn’t make this an easy uncomplicated ending. it’s still the crows, and they are what they are. is there such a thing as a “good first talon”? how high is the price in lives that you’re willing to pay to keep yourself safely respected? how many houses are you willing to eradicate to show your dominance? whose blood money are you willing to take? how many assassinations are you willing to send your man to complete, never knowing if he’ll come back or how it will have hurt him? how willing are you to train children who have nowhere else to turn? to punish them for failing to kill? how far will you go to stop them one day turning on you? what about your own children, if you have any? how is their fate going to be any different to caterina’s kids? will you train them and break them the same way you and he were broken, or leave them soft and vulnerable to all the dangers of your life? if you don’t have kids, who are you going to pick out as heir, to put this weight on their shoulders? can you bear being the same person to lucanis that caterina was, and him still looking at you with blind love? can you bear it if one day you go so far that he doesn’t anymore? is it worth it if he lives? is it worth it for the villa and the good coffee and the nice leather? do you ever remember what it felt like when people looked at you and saw a hero?
that’s how i feel abt it anyway. i don’t think the crows can ever be what you might call a clean ending, not with the only way i find it fun to perceive them. but that’s no reason not to take this path! an interesting character setup, for sure

Heyyy Sun! It’s good to see you on my TL again :)
I was wondering if you can do a reading of the members of ATEEZ, what are their thoughts on dating and /or marrying a foreigner who is a POC if they were not Korean or East Asian? Thank you - 🐚
𝘼𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙯 𝙤𝙣 𝘽𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨

Final Answer: Page of Wands, Nine of Coins, The Hanged Man
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
hongjoong seems a little hesitant to be romantically involved with a foreigner. this could be in relation to not knowing enough or even this question being too broad; there could be certain ethnic or racial groups he’s had more experience around, so he feels more comfortable, but it’s like he knows there’s a wide “array” of people, so it almost doesn’t make sense to make a blanket statement. most of the foreigners he might’ve had the opportunity of being romantic with might’ve been fans or aware of his career, so there’s a worry of running into people only into him for that aspect that could be making him hesitant also. he could be closed off from engaging with foreigners romantically as a result; “one bad apple spoils the bunch” in this idea, but seven of wands is present showing that if someone was persistent enough “and had/has the right intentions”, then he’d likely be open. he is genuinely interested in connecting with foreigners though! it seems he’d want to be with someone who has something going for themselves though, so he wouldn’t have to worry about being used.
TLDR; solid maybe

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬:

Final Answer: The World (Rx), Knight of Wands (Rx), Four of Coins, Eight of Cups
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
despite the shufflemancy song and the way all the cards seem, seonghwa could actually be interested in the idea of being romantic with a foreigner. it could be the type of things where in his head he’s curious, but he’s apprehensive to actually do it in real life for a multitude of reasons. he could get very caught up in all the ways things could go wrong? like the media could find out and how would he deal with that? how would a nda even work? how would the relationship even work? would they “learn to speak” korean? he seems to be blocking his actual want to interact with foreigners romantically because of these worries. therefore, his answer right now is that he wouldn’t be romantically involved with a foreigner. he could feel he’ll be more stressed and frustrated with all the trials of dealing with the relationship and therefore it would be better to stay away from being interested altogether.
TLDR; technically is interested, but thinks a lot about the logistical side and therefore would not
Yunho
𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲:
“Creep” by TLC
𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬:
Page of Wands (Rx), The Star, Wheel of Fortune, Three of Cups, The World
Final Answer: The Sun
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
yunho could be a little naïve when it comes to interacting with foreigners romantically (or even in general “sometimes”). he seems interested and hopeful though with the star being present! he could have an idea along the lines of “i don’t know a ton about that, but i’m interested/curious”. he could see things going either way in being easy or hard to deal with. he might be more open to the idea if he was introduced to a foreigner via his friends or family or a gathering; he’d like the chance to interact naturally before trying to flirt or things like that. overall, it seems he has this idea that love can come “from anywhere at any time”.
TLDR; strong yes
Yeosang

at one point in time yeosang might’ve been worried about being romantic with foreigners. this could’ve been out of feeling like they were too different, but it seems more likely it was out of feeling like he himself was too different. it’s not like he necessarily had the idea that he would be “the problem”, but he might’ve been self conscious about showing up in the relationship – maybe in relation to not being culturally sensitive enough, being worried about adapting to someone else’s culture, and things aligned with that. now, he seems to have done away with those thoughts, and he’s a lot more confident. he might believe it’s “inevitable” to interact with people who are different from him, so there’s no reason to bar them from dating him. he also seems to acknowledge he would still need to work on being “sensitive” and “aware”, but it’s something he’s willing to do (if needed).
TLDR; yes
San
𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲:
“the light is coming” by Ariana Grande (feat. Nicki Minaj)
𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬:
Ace of Wands, Nine of Coins, The Hierophant (Rx), The Sun, Two of Swords (Rx)
Final Answer: Justice, Ten of Wands (Rx), The Moon (Rx)
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
san could view being romantic with foreigners as a new way to interact with people. he could be in a period of life where he’s in contact with foreigners more than ever (and maybe finding interest in them as result), so he could see his attraction as result of this contact. with the hierophant in reverse he’s definitely open to breaking traditions and doing his own thing although he does “appreciate them”. he could more so be focused on being happy in his life, so suffering or missing out on a wanted love because of tradition may not be his thing; he might be more afraid of not experiencing true joy than the fear of possible ostracization. his focus is on his own personal happiness, and if a foreigner is part of that, then “that’s fine”.
TLDR; strong yes
Mingi
𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲:
“Return of the Mack” by Mack Morrison
𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬:
The Empress, The Devil, Eight of Swords (Rx), Nine of Swords, Three of Coins (Rx), Three of Wands
Final Answer: Nine of Wands (Rx), Nine of Cups, The Emperor
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
he kinda delves into ideal type, but mingi could be into people he can make strong connections with. the idea of “soul ties” and “soul tying” comes to mind. at one point in time he could’ve felt restricted when it came to who he was attracted to or who he “could show attraction to”, but he’s let go of these restrictions despite continued concerns. he might’ve had romantic attractions to foreigners before/for a long time, but viewed them as unrealistic to pursue (or people told him it was unrealistic or “silly” for him to do). now, it seems he’s able to do so freely, and he’s “happy about that”. despite this, there is still an air of things being unknown? maybe the ideas people pushed on him have stronger foundations than he thought they did? like people around him have been pessimistic for so long that on an unconscious level he’s taken those whispers more into account than he think he has.
TLDR; maybe; he wants to be able to say yes, but is still reckoning with what people have told him
Wooyoung
𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲:
“There Goes My Baby” by Charlie Wilson
𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬:
Five of Swords (Rx), King of Swords, The Star, Ace of Wands, Knight of Wands, Six of Coins (Rx)
Final Answer: Wheel of Fortune, The Magician
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
wooyoung could be the type of person who at the end of the day has to “be honest with [himself]”. he really values honesty and being courageous and outspoken about who he is, so this kind of gives the energy that the way he portrays himself is the way he is.”it’s obvious, no?” comes to mind. he could find it engaging to talk with foreigners in general, and he’s definitely an intentional flirt with the knight of wands present. he might be hesitant to fully engage for some reason. it could be similar to hongjoong’s situation in that people try to take advantage of his status, but it feels like something else also. there could’ve been a situation where he tried to “go all in” in some way with a foreigner and ended up getting his feelings hurt, so he could be a little hesitant to settle down with one, but this feels like a temporary feeling.
TLDR; likely yes
Jongho
𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲:
“Story of Us” by Tinashe
𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬:
Five of Swords, King of Swords, Three of Cups, Page of Swords, Death (Rx), Seven of Wands
Final Answer: Wheel of Fortune, Knight of Cups
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠:
jongho could feel as if being romantic with foreigners goes against the life he might have dreamed up for himself. he could enjoy the company of foreigners especially in regards to talking with them and learning more about things through them, but his interest could mainly stop there. he might’ve even tried to seek out foreigners he might be attracted to (maybe in that they have similar features or personality types to people he’s usually attracted to who are korean), but he doesn’t necessarily feel compelled to specifically seek out foreigners. this could be a situation where if he came across someone he's interested in he may think about it a little more, but currently he’s not really attracted to foreigners romantically.
TLDR; maybe, but likely no as he just doesn’t find himself romantically attracted to them

EUROPE TOUR24 FROM DEPRESSION TO [mode of Withering to death & UROBOROS] - Live reports (Warsaw + Paris)
Warsaw - Progresja 19/03/24 (mode of WTD)
Travelled to Poland on the 16th, we had mixed weather during the week-end but it was luckily quite sunny (albeit cold-ish) while we queued outside the venue! My friend and I had Priority upgrades for this show so we arrived around 14:30 & waited right next to the VIP queue. Venue logistics for the queue(s) were a bit fuzzy at first* but we got our laminated passes around 16:00 (just after the VIPs got theirs + goodies) then waited for a bit after 18:00 when the VIPs entered the building. Diru/prod staff keeps a printed list of VIP/priority passes holders and distributes passes and goodies by checking the names.
*Fans were better organised with sharpies and unofficial waiting numbers :)
We went in and waited (again :) ) in the pit for 1h, behind the caution tape separating the VIP from the rest of the room. This allowed us to get some merch at the stand, then at 19:00 the security guards lifted the caution tape and we managed to get nice spots at the 2nd & 3rd rows in front of Die's mic. We waited again for another hour while the general attendance ticket holders entered the venue, then the show started around 20:20 (a bit late because of a technical issue with Die's guitar apparently, that had all their technicians running around looking stressed out), without any intro if I remember correctly, maybe because of said technical issue (but there were Diru remixes being played through the speakers during the whole time we waited inside).
I was unfortunately right next to an annoying (& bulky) man who kept pushing me & other fans around the whole time (I fought for my life the whole set and almost fell when the members entered the stage), but otherwise the show was very nice, it was great seeing them live for the first time even though it felt quite unreal! WTD is not my favourite album but it was still amazing to hear the songs live and the audience was really into it <3 I could see Die very clearly, Toshiya also came around a few times, as well as Kaoru in the end, but my view of Kyo and Shinya was a bit blocked. Die wore his usual tights with a black sleeveless top and red jacket; Shinya had a flowy white shirt as always; Kyo sported a simple black t-shirt & track pants (?) with a nice white make-up on the top half of his face; Toshiya wore the black siren dress (I almost died seeing it with my own two eyes) with thigh-high boots (not the same pair as in the 2024 Yurameki PV though, they had bulky heels instead of stilettos heels for practical reasons obviously :D), and Kaoru wore a black suit with a white shirt.
They all looked a bit jetlagged, having landed in Poland only the day before the 1st concert, and Die was breathing quite heavily during Akuro no oka in the end! The show ended quite abruptly with Akuro no oka, I was expecting Rasetsukoku as they tend to end most concerts with it but they all left the stage (Kaoru, Die and Toshiya being of course the last to leave after throwing picks everywhere).
On a personal note, I was overjoyed the finally see the brown ESP bass which is heavily featured on WTD songs <3
The setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dir-en-grey/2024/progresja-warsaw-poland-6baa32c2.html
The show ended around 22:00, it took a while for everyone to leave the venue!
Warsaw - Progresja 20/03/24 (mode of UROBOROS)
We had VIP upgrades this time & arrived around the same time as the day before, to wait with other fans under a nice sun :) Logistics were better than for the 1st show, with barriers already in place and 3 visible queues (VIP/Priority at the front + GA at the back of the 1st two lines). We heard reports & anecdotes from the previous day's VIP meet & greet and were 'warned' that Kyo had a paper bag on his head, so that saved us some awkwardness later :').
Staff also came while we were waiting, to check the names/tickets and distribute laminated passes & VIP goodies. We got a nice cotton bag, a fan, and an enveloppe to protect the postcards distributed by the group members. This time we got both a laminated pass and a wrist bracelet, to avoid cheating with passes from the day before. Staff also warned us no to take pictures/touch them during the M&G, then we entered the venue around 18:00 as expected. People queued in the stairs then before the doors of the main room upstairs (some went directly to the merch stand while we waited here), then the doors opened and we went inside one by one in a continued file, to meet the members and get the postcards. It was all very quick, I was a bit confused because they stayed in a quite dark area and I almost didn't recognize Kaoru who was first in line, oops. We didn't really had time to speak with them so I just took the signed postcards while thanking each of them; after Kaoru was Die with big sunglasses, Kyo with a paper bag on his head, Shinya with a mask on and Toshiya with sunglasses (he was the most smiley of them all and looked really nice and patient!). They were not yet wearing their stage outfits/makeup (except maybe for Kyo under the bag I guess?), and there was a gift box right next to the table to leave stuff for them.
Then we rushed to the stage and got 1st/2nd row spots, right between Kyo's platform on the left and Die's mic on the right! We waited again for two hours while speaking with nice fans from Romania who were right next to and behind us (hi if you're reading that!).
The show started on time with a nice intro video; it started with Vinushka, which is one of my favourite songs so I was really ecstatic to hear it live **. Kyo had a nice skull make-up which was really impressive with the visuals displayed on the screen! Then everything went blurry & heavy really fast haha, Uroboros really has to be experienced live at least once! HYDRA -666- & Reiketsu Nariseba in particular were especially impressive, they put them at the end of the main set to try and kill us I think :') (I was lucky enough to record the Toshiya-Die interaction during Reiketsu!). One calmer moment was Inconvenient Ideal, during which both Kaoru & Die went AWOL for a while (Kyo seemed to be looking for them at the beginning).
Not that the encore was softer, it started deceivingly 'calmly' with Dozing Green, then it was chaos again with Stuck Man, T.D.F.F. and Eddie back to back. Akuro no oka was again the last song of the encore/show, but they all looked less tired than the day before even though the show was more intense!
The audience was enthusiastic once again and we got pushed a lot from behind, but it was an overall great show.
Kyo left the stage first as usual after saying bye-bye, then Shinya briefly went on the platform to throw his drumsticks before leaving. Kaoru, Die and Toshiya stayed for a bit, throwing picks and water, and I managed to get one of Toshiya's bass picks!
The setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dir-en-grey/2024/progresja-warsaw-poland-6baa32c2.html
We took again a while to leave the venue, and headed to the merch stand to get more stuff (WTD/Uroboros lucky charms, stickers and postcards with cute drawings of the band members as monsters enjoying their trip to Europe <3).
Paris - Bataclan 22/03/24 (mode of WTD)
After a day of respite to travel back home, we headed to the Bataclan concert hall early in the afternoon to queue. I was a bit nervous as I'd never been to this venue before despite living in Paris, and its name was of course associated with dark memories from the 2015 terror attacks, but in the end the excitement to see Diru live again was greater than my anxiety :)
We had Priority upgrades and waited in the queue that was already in place; everything seemed quite well organised at first with three delimited lines but it ended a bit messy in the end with the VIPs moving to another line on the other side of the sidewalk, Priority upgrades members not knowing where to wait, etc. Luckily the weather was nice and sunny, and we waited more or less patiently until staff came with the laminated passes around 16:00. The VIPs got inside the venue a bit before 18:00, then the Priority upgrades; we waited again behind a caution tape inside the concert hall, which was then lifted at 19:00 and we managed to grab nice spots on the left side of the stage this time, I was at the barrier (1st row) right before Kaoru's mic and with an amazing view of Toshiya & Kyo!
There was a support artist this time, a French DJ who did his best to entertain us but I must admit we weren't really into it as we were waiting for the main set to begin. It wasn't that bad but I'd have preferred to wait with the Diru remixes like in Warsaw!
Unlike the 1st day in Warsaw, we had the intro music + video just before the band entered the stage (Die in red&white, Shinya in white, Kyo in black with a touch of eye-liner, Toshiya in the white dress and Kaoru in a steampunk-ish suit and vest **). Mode of WTD was great in Warsaw but it was wild in Paris, the audience sang everything loudly, cheered & clapped and the band seemed to really appreciate the vibe :)
It was the first time I really saw Kaoru so close (except for a few appearances on the right side of the stage in Warsaw) and it was amazing to see him play and make faces at the crowd & cameras, he really knows how to motivate people by (lovingly) yelling at them \o/
There was a funny moment during Akuro no oka in the end, when Toshiya almost began his bass solo too early with a single "klonk" and looked sheepish for a second (Kaoru was like "erm, i'm not finished yet mate" while still playing the guitar :D). I recorded the whole song but my phone mysteriously freezed right at this point so we concluded that Toshiya is actually a telepath and erased it with his preternatural powers :').
A very nice evening overall, it was the perfect combination of great songs & performances from the band + overjoyed participation from the audience! And the crowd was both enthusiastic and very chill pushing-wise on our end, so that was a nice respite from the Warsaw shows physically speaking :)

Paris - Bataclan 23/03/24 (mode of UROBOROS)
THE BEST CONCERT EVER
(Sorry, this needed to be said first).
4th (and last :'( ) show of the tour for us, so we hoped it would be great and we were not disappointed!
The queue outside was incredibly chaotic: despite being more or less organised the day before, it was a mess this time and nobody really knew where to wait. In addition, the weather was atrocious and we got rain showers, a chilly wind *and* a freezing hailstorm during the afternoon, everybody ended up soaked with chattering teeth for the remainder of the waiting time... But the VIPs finally went inside around 18:00, then us (Priority upgrades again) around 20 mn later.
After the caution tape was lifted, we went to the right side of the stage and had a nice spot in front of Die's mic once again! Then the GA ticket holders went in and the room quickly got quite warm, before the support act even started. It was the same DJ as the previous evening but the audience was a bit more into it this time.
The band entered the stage around 20:25 like the other days, with intro song + video again. There was a technical issue with the projected images on the screen during at least 20 mn, the visuals for Vinushka were really blurry and we also saw a computer error message during the following songs, but it got fixed at some point and didn't stop us from enjoying the show: from Vinushka to Bugaboo, everything was already wild but the band + crowd went really insane after that until near the end of the encore: Doukoku to Sarinu, HYDRA -666-, Gaika, Reiketsu Nariseba... the end of the main set was even wilder than the first time, they left us no time to breathe and we were all screaming, headbanging and jumping everywhere. Kyo looked really satisfied and apparently parted the crowd in two at some point (this is from another live report i read), the audience went wild and the security staff had to douse us with water to avoid more faintings (they had to evacuate at least three people from the pit from what i saw). I almost didn't take pictures this time, except for a few during the calmer songs and interludes because i just couldn't move for anything else than jumping up and down :')
We were already almost dead on our feet at the end of the main set, and the encore finished us, it was as wild as the main set but we managed to find some unexpected resources within us to scream and jump some more! Akuro no oka was a welcome and moving respite at the end (no bass solo mishap this time, a certain bassist was focusing haha), I personally wouldn't have survived another song like the rest and had to sit down after the show ended to re-learn how to breathe properly :') Luckily the venue staff took pity on us and put the AC on during the encore, so we barely managed not to pass out from heat exhaustion...
Then another great time at the end when the band members stayed on the stage: Kyo left quickly as usual but Shinya stayed a second longer than the other nights and threw not only his drumsticks but also a drumskin (??) like a frisbee in the crowd, then the usual suspects Kaoru, Toshiya and Die loitered for a while, throwing picks and smiling at the crowd <3 They looked like they didn't want to leave and neither did we!

so i was thinking about wings of fire while at work again
and i was thinking. pantalan language right
in the books, they adopt clearsight's language completely, so that they can reasonably communicate with pyrrhian dragons later on. i'm not gonna nitpick the logistics of this, gritty details like this are clearly not tui's focus and that's fine. but i had some ideas for my own heacanon universe.
what if, instead of trading one tongue for another, pantalan dragons held onto their original language - let's call it pantalan - while also learning clearsight's pyrrhian? the idea that they slowly became bilingual feels much more realistic to me. and then, because clearsight became so widely worshipped and mythologized, i'd imagine that eventually pantala began to see pyrrhian as a fundamentally spiritual or holy language, not to be used as casually as their own. i imagine it would be used when referring to her, or her part in their history, or even when talking with extreme emotion that they don't feel can be fully conveyed with pantalan.
while most languages evolve over time, i actually think pyrrhian - for pantala - would not. they don't want to change the language they see as holy, and scholars rely closely on the book of clearsight to study the language so thoroughly that alterations are almost impossible. meanwhile, though, in pyrrhia, of course their language has changed over time, since it's casually spoken. so i actually think that while technically they're the same language, there would still be some communication difficulties between the two continents. it would be essentially like us today communicating with people who still spoke in thousand-year-old english. possible, but clunky. (i love to imagine tsunami's reaction when she washed up to pantala and realized the only way she could understand them is when they talk like starflight's most insufferable scrolls)
anyway, that's it. i didn't really take into account the fact that it's heavily implied that the pantalan tribes originally came from pyrrhia themselves (maybe rainwing offshoots?) and therefore would probably already have a similar language. i didn't think too much about that for the sake of simplicity, but if that gives anyone any other ideas, please lmk!!
fantasy language stuff is fun :)

🎄 Sweet Dreams of Holly and Ribbon: Part 13 - 364 Day Until Christmas 🎄
Read in full || Part 1 || Part 12
The morning sun seeps in through a crack in the curtains, illuminating the guest room with its golden glow. The same guest room Sirius has slept in for the majority of the month, the same sun that has woken him up each morning. Except this time he isn’t alone.
Remus is half asleep at his side, one arm slung over his chest and head resting on his shoulder. Sirius’ fingers run through his hair, absentmindedly playing with the curls. “What happens now?”
Remus sighs, nestling ever so closer into Sirius’ side. “Nothing happens,” he says quietly.
Sirius frowns at the words, “What do you mean?”
“You’re going back to London soon,” Remus says with a sigh. “Whatever this is, I can’t do that sort of distance. I won’t do that to Teddy.”
“And what if I didn’t go back?”
Remus shifts then, sitting up slightly to look Sirius straight in the eye. “What do you mean?”
“I mean I did only tell Reg in the heat of the moment but technically I quit. There’s nothing tying me to London anymore.”
Remus quietly studies Sirius’ face. “And you’d stay here instead?”
“Yes,” Sirius answers in a heartbeat because there isn’t any question about it.
Remus isn’t the only reason although he is up there; James and Lily and Harry are all here, a better family than he ever had by blood; and there isn’t that suffocating air that hangs around London, heavy and dragging that Sirius didn’t even realise existed until he left and came back. And logistically it won’t be as simple as that, Sirius knows that, but Regulus can look after the flat in his absence and Rosmerta will probably need a hand in the pub once the school holidays are over which’ll tide him over while he figures out the rest.
Remus’ gaze is unwavering as he searches his face for answers. Sirius moves his hand to gently run up and down Remus’ back, brushing delicately over the bumps of his spine and the taut skin of years-old scars.
And then Remus dips down and catches his lips in a gentle kiss. Sirius buried his other hand in Remus’ tawny curls. “I like you, Sirius. I really like you,” Remus says quietly against his lips. “But we can’t rush this.”
“I know,” Sirius whispers back. He can feel the hesitance in Remus and although he thinks he understands the reasoning behind it, if there are any other reasons they’ll find a way to overcome them. “I spent seven years sharing a dorm with James, he can put up with me as a housemate for a bit longer.”
Remus smiles and it makes his eyes sparkle and Sirius can’t help but catch his lips again.
“So,” Sirius asks again as Remus settles back into the side. “What happens now?”
“Well, I guess you walk me home later-“
“-like the gentleman I am,” Sirius cuts in and Remus huffs out a laugh.
“And later you’ll come by the shop and pretend to buy books while you flirt, and then I take you out to dinner, and then we see where we go from there.”
Sirius hums, “That sounds nice.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
From out in the hallway comes the muffled sounds of Harry and Teddy waking, Christmas excitement still fresh the morning after. Sirius knows they should get up soon, but he really doesn’t want to leave Remus’ arms just yet and he trusts James and Lily to watch over in the meantime.
They let the early morning slip by, sharing lazy kisses as the house starts to fill with the smell of fried bacon.
“We should get up soon,” Sirius murmurs.
“Yeah, we should,” Remus says but doesn’t make a move to get up, “in a minute.”
Sirius shifts, rolling them both over so Remus is flat on his back and Sirius is hovering above him. Remus loops his arms around the back of Sirius’ neck, pulling him down and kissing him again. Sirius can feel the hum of approval reverberate through his chest as he moves to kiss along his jaw, nipping at the sweet spot on his neck that makes Remus sigh wantonly, and down his sternum -
- and in an instant, the bedroom swings open violently.
“I found them!” Harry’s voice yells from the doorway. “They had a sleepover!”
Sirius groans, burying his face into the pillow. Remus chuckles and presses a kiss into the side of his head. “Sorry sweetheart, you might have to get used to that.”
Sirius shifts so he can meet Remus’ eye. “I think I can live with that.”

Last thought before I go to bed, but... this means Lucifer is the only devil so far not to have a pact with Solomon (if Gamigin has a pact or not is unclear, but I will explain that briefly at the end).
Lucifer fell from Heaven after God vanished, and God vanished very soon after Solomon. Hence, Solomon was not around by the time Lucifer entered Hell meaning they couldn't form a pact. Take into account that Lucifer technically wasn't even a devil for two more years on top of that and... yeah. No overlap between Solomon and Lucifer to form a pact, which means if he and MC decide to form one for any reason, it will be the first pact that MC has made entirely independently of Solomon's past. I think MC deserves that, honestly.
Gamigin is a little unclear if he has a pact with Solomon or not. The dragon Gamigin certainly didn't make a pact with Solomon but his predecessor may have (we don't know). All we know is that the dragon inherited everything from Gamigin, including his name. That means that, if the original Gamigin had a pact with Solomon, it may be possible that it was passed on to the dragon. Or maybe it wasn't. Or maybe original Gamigin passed on before Solomon. We don't know the timeline or logistics with this one. Is it even possible to make a pact with a man who is technically a dragon and not a devil?

GGardengirl's Guide to Choosing Perspective & Tense When Writing Fiction
because for some reason, i felt like writing an essay. (word count: 1974)
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
First Person: Give Me a Reason, Pretty Please
I don’t think I have written a single thing in first person since I was in middle school, but that is because I mainly write fic. First person fic is generally a turn off for most readers (me included) and I think that’s because first person is such an intimate perspective.
You, the writer, aren’t just writing about a character, you are becoming the character, so that we, the reader, can become the character too. If it is not your original work you’re writing about, then it can feel weird and out of character when we read it, because it implies an intimate knowledge the layman (laystan, if you will) doesn’t have when it comes to the source material. And even if you do know the source material inside and out, and have a serious grasp on the characters, fic readers are not likely to take a chance on it—so keep that in mind, if you’re thinking about first person for a fic. It can be done, and it can be done well, but just keep that in mind, so you know what you’re getting into!
(This ONLY applies to fic. If you’re writing an original story, I don’t think you need to have any worries about choosing first person, because they are your characters, and it is your story. You can do whatever the fuck you want with them, and no one can say it’s out of character. Now, onto my main thought about first person.)
First person reads as a real time internal monologue—these are thoughts being thought for the very first time, as something happens, not after. Because of this, it should mainly be used with present tense, unless there is a narrative reason for past tense, such as the protagonist writing the book they exist in.
Think: Percy Jackson and the Olympians—We are supposed to read the books as if Percy himself is the one who is writing them, not Rick Riordan. (It’s kind of a mixed perspective, because he does address us, the reader, which is direct address, but it’s still first person. The audience is only really referred to as an aside.)
We know this, because Percy straight up tells us it’s a book in the second sentence of The Lightning Thief:
“If you're reading this because you think you might be [a half-blood], my advice is: close this book right now.”
Percy is writing down his story, so that future demigods can learn from his experience. Everything that happens in PJO has technically already happened. Future Percy is telling us how Past Percy felt in those moments, while also having the gift of hindsight, and being able to know what is important and what’s not. (One could argue that this would make it present tense, but Present Percy isn’t telling us what’s happening in the current moment. The story is still set in the past.)
It can feel weird to read something in past tense when the narrative doesn’t call for it, because it makes me wonder: who is the protagonist narrating for? If the story isn’t happening in the moment, are they just sitting somewhere, going through their past beat by beat in their mind?
“I did [BLANK],” “I thought [BLANK],” —why are they rehashing their own thoughts? And why are we, the reader, being told their past thoughts? Give us a reason!
This is just my personal opinion—there doesn’t technically need to be an in-universe reason for first person being past tense. There’s no hard and fast rule. But I find it distracting to read, and I think it’s something to be aware of—the last thing you want as a writer is for your reader to be stuck on storytelling logistics, and not the actual story.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
Third Person: Flexible as Hell
Third person is a lot more malleable. It can be past or present, but it’s still good to think through your choice of tense and whether or not it should be omniscient or limited. You want to choose something that helps serve the story, and doesn’t hinder it.
Past tense omniscient makes it clear right off the bat that the story being told is a work of fiction. It’s very storybook-esque; very Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, and all that. You don’t need an explicit narrator to make this work, but this is where an explicit narrator works the best—think: The Book Thief, and how it’s narrated by Death. (Once again, one could argue this is technically first person, but since Death isn't actually in the story, he's just telling it, it is seen as third person.)
It works similar to Percy Jackson—everything we are being told has already happened, and the narrator is telling us what happened for a reason. There is a purpose in this specific story being told—we want to read on, so we can find that purpose.
Present tense omniscient feels more like a movie/live action. We, the reader, are watching the events unfold. These things are happening now, and we are witnessing it. And, like a movie, we see a fuller version of events, because we aren’t only seeing through the eyes of one person. We are watching from a third party camera; a bird’s eye view—not straight through a character’s eyes. If you want your story to feel like a movie, this is probably the way to go.
Limited and limited omniscient POV’s work in the same way. Both focus on the direct view of a protagonist; we see what they see—limited omniscience just means you add more characters to the mix. This is typically what I choose to write in, but I oscillate frequently between past and present tense with different stories, sometimes with no rhyme or reason. If it’s a book I’m writing fic for, I tend to use whatever tense the book was written in, but otherwise, it’s just based on vibes.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
Second Person: Criminally Underutilized, Terminally Misunderstood
Second person is…complicated. Which is understandable—it can be weird to read, and tricky to write. I understand why people tend to write second person off, but I think that’s a huge loss for them. Because when second person works, it fucking works.
Second person works best in the present tense. I think of it like there’s an omniscient overlord who’s describing your—the protagonist’s—life in real time, as it actually happens. Past tense feels weird because why is the overlord telling you what you did? You already did it—you should know.
SIDENOTE: (spoilers for Harrow the Ninth)
This is the exception to the previous statement. Second person past tense can work, but only if the story is lying to you and is secretly first person direct address. It works when I, a secondary protagonist, am narrating what happened to you, the main protagonist, while I was hidden in your body like a parasite after you lobotomized yourself in the name of love, and you need some clarification of events after the fact. This, and only this, is when it works. (Please read The Locked Tomb series. I’m begging you.)
BACK TO THE POINT:
You can write in second person no matter what the story is about, but I think the real beauty in second person comes through when it’s being used for a reason. I’ve found that it works best in character explorations, and stories where the main character has complicated feelings surrounding their identity. Second person detaches you from the world; it adds a degree of separation from the self that you can’t get with any other perspective.
For example: there’s a wonderful jackieshauna fic by britishngay on AO3, called memento mori, that’s set in Ancient Rome. The entire story is set in second person, and while reading it, I realized that it couldn’t be written any other way and still work the way it was meant to.
(Spoilers for the entire fic—feel free to come back, but it's still worth reading even knowing what I'm about to say)
In memento mori, Shauna is a former butcher whose home is destroyed and is taken to Rome. In Rome, she’s forced to be a gladiator, and to go by the name of “Butcher.”
Shauna is robbed of her identity as “Shauna.” She keeps her name as a secret just for herself, because it’s the only thing she has that’s still hers—the only thing that has yet to be stolen. She takes on the persona of “Butcher.”
“‘Far from home, it’s the Butcher of Gaul!’ The announcer yells and the gate starts to rise. The anxiety in your gut reaches an all-time high before dropping to nothing, you detach yourself from you, the girl from the woman, the rebel to the gladiator, Shauna from the butcher.”
Butcher is violent, ruthless; an amalgamation of the audience’s desires. But she can’t be anything other than Butcher, because Shauna died when her home did.
“‘Butcher?’ [Jackie] asks, tentative and for a second you forgot that that’s how she knows you, that that’s your name, your identity here. It’s Shauna, my name is Shauna. You almost say but it gets quelled by your head. Nothing else, nothing more.”
It’s only as her relationship with Jackie grows, and she feels like she can open up to her, that she tells Jackie her real name, and then eventually Van. By the end of the story, she’s reclaimed her identity as Shauna all together.
“‘My name is Shauna.’ You tell [Van], in case you don’t make it. She’s probably your closest friend here, and you want someone else to say it, so you can hear it one more time before you go out there, in case." "It’s nice to hear it. You’re enjoying hearing it said again, by people you trust.”
The story works the way it does, and has the impact it does because of the perspective it’s in. There is no other way it could work.
Third person wouldn’t work: Shauna would have to be referred to by name—but the narrative can’t refer to her as Shauna, because she isn’t Shauna, she’s Butcher. But she’s not entirely Butcher, because that would mean she’d completely erased her identity as Shauna.
First person wouldn’t work either. It would solve the problem of how to refer to Shauna, but it wouldn’t serve the narrative—it wouldn’t show the disconnect she has when it comes to who she is and the things she is doing. First person is far too personal, too intimate, and she has walls up for everyone around her, even herself. Shauna can’t invite an audience into her internal monologue when she doesn’t even let herself into it.
Which leaves only second person. When Shauna’s real name is mentioned, when we see Shauna call herself “Shauna,” or her friends call her “Shauna,” it feels important. It’s important, because it’s only ever mentioned those few times—only 34 times is the word “Shauna” written. “Butcher” is written 81 times.
Writing from a second person perspective gets me into a character’s head more than any other perspective. It plays a weird trick on my brain, where I start to feel like I am the “you” I’m writing about. There is something about how matter of fact it feels to write something like, “You walk down the street. You feel broken inside,” that makes me go: “Huh. I guess I’m walking down the street and feel broken inside.” Shit makes me feel weird, but I love it.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
No matter what perspective or tense you choose to use, remember this: writing is fun! It is meant to be fun! Don't torture yourself with this stuff if it makes writing not fun—talking about technical things and writing strategies is just how writing is fun for me.
Happy writing!

tak is the main antagonist for this crossover fic im writing and due to the lack of canon content beyond literally that one episode and some of etf, sometimes i worry im not doing her any justice or it’s too ooc. what do you think would be the best way to write tak in your opinion? (if you happen to have any advice on the matter. just wondering! byeeee💃)
i'm genuinely so relieved at the specification of "in your opinion" because i have such a strange long-lasting attachment to tak that i think i would second-guess my thoughts on her in an objective vacuum to the point of just saying "she should be purple". but as it is i now have the freedom to go stupid crazy about it
i think there's a number of crucial elements to tak, but i think the one that people miss most in writing her is that she isn't just meant to be a more competent counterpart to zim - she's a direct parallel in terms of her ego, motivation, and backstory (the latter particularly as a result of treatment by irken society)
like zim, tak has an enormous ego and an audacity that places herself above anyone else, even the empire itself (see: her custom invader insignia. that's like drawing a crucifix but substituting yourself for jesus after being refused by the church), and like zim, in spite of her disregard for the empire's rulings she's striving for recognition both by it and within it (to quote her: "the plan i have in store for this nasty rock will so impress the tallest that they'll have no choice but to make me an invader"). the same way zim "quit being banished", tak "escaped" from the janitorial squad she was placed under as a stopgap job until the next elite test in seventy years
i've seen some people write her as tall, but in my opinion her being only very, very slightly taller than zim is not just a stylistic choice but an essential part of her character that draws her backstory together: technically that janitorial job wasn't even a punishment, it was just deemed the most suitable position for her in the absence of official imperial proof that she was capable of anything "better" or "higher" that would've been afforded to a taller more easily
that she made it so far in the elite course at all in spite of her height gives context and precedent to the competence and sheer refusal to admit defeat she exhibits in her attempt to destroy earth, a planet she initially believes is already undergoing an officially-sanctioned invasion judging from how bitterly she tells zim about what should've been "rightfully hers", down to specifically mentioning the great assigning - loops back to her audacity, in that she has zimlike degrees of ego regardless of how hard the circumstances logistically are aligned to stomp her back down (see again her quote where she confidently states her plan to hijack an official invasion will impress the tallest to the point they won't mind her flagrantly flaunting the rules). she would've spent so much of her life striving to meet her own exceedingly high expectations, not the exceedingly low ones assumed of someone her height, that this likely isn't far from her standard procedure of "show them i can do it better than the rules say"
what sets her apart from zim, i think, is in how much she's allowed herself to let those miserable expectations get to her and leave her pettier, more vindictive, less grandstanding speeches like zim than showing off everything she's capable of as often as possible, no matter how necessary (ALL the stupid parkour she does for no reason) - which i think is admittedly less her fault than partially being the result of her having actually experienced her confidence failing her when the entire future she'd set up for herself was pulled out from underneath her
unlike zim, who experiences failure regularly but never has it truly sink in, tak had the entirety of her progress wiped off the board in a single moment as a result of circumstances entirely beyond her control: i think a large part of the reason she resents zim so deeply and sincerely isn't solely because of the practical consequences of her missing her test (though it is in no way insignificant to it) but because he was the one who broke her streak - he was the one who made her brutally aware that no matter how she built herself up, no matter what proof she offered, she could still fail and be crushed into exactly the nobody she was expected to be
and she just cannot abide that, no matter what, because even if the memory of helplessness and humiliation will never go away (not that she'd acknowledge it wouldn't), if she can make him hurt the same way maybe that will give back to her some of the power and control over her life and her identity that she lost in losing her potential status as a real, sanctioned invader
also, i do think she should be purple. she seems to have a great attachment to aesthetics and individual style, given her custom pseudo-elite uniform (which we see her wearing even in training, on her test day), the fact she designed and programmed her hologram specifically to have the distinguishing marking of a beauty spot in the same place she has one on her actual face, and her penchant for making nearly every damn piece of her tech purple some way (minus mimi, who while being her own bootleg SIR unit still follows the same red color scheme as a functional one) - even the cockpit of the spittle runner she pilots is initially purple before it's ejected as an escape pod, and the magma pump's interior looks like this:
girl likes giving things her own little touches whether that's in terms of her trademark color, her near-blasphemous custom imperial logo, or her doing a tactical slide between bars of a railing instead of just stepping normally onto the floor
#i am so sorry this post turned out this damn long. i really like her#also i'll admit here i think tak's ego is more impressive because she doesn't even have the arguable delusions that zim can use a shortcut#she just developed that thing through sheer force of will and trained her skills to support her claims

Something I haven't read in fanfics, or in most, is that the OCfemale/reader/You, etc., is taller than Five. I mean, it's usually the other way around, where Five is the tall one in the relationship and I don't mind that at all, I'm short, but lately I've been wondering what Five would be like in a relationship with someone who is taller than him in height? Which brings me to another question, how tall is Five? We know that because he was trapped in the apocalypse for decades, he was pretty much - a lot - limited to one thing that could be considered basic; food, nourishment, water among other things. Height growth is determined by a combination of factors, including genetics, hormone levels, and nutrition. While genetics is the main determinant of a person's height, nutrition can significantly influence the extent of genetic potential. Five was limited to those nutrients and I highly doubt drinking like a pirate on New Year's Eve helped height growth. But because Five had a regress in age, returning to his 13-year-old body and now, leaving aside the constant battle with the apocalypses, he has access to food, water and certain comforts that he didn't have in that devastated wasteland, "technically" Five's body should have a proper, normal development as the years go by and reach a height that would be taller than he had before. To get an idea of the height of a character I usually go by the actor who plays him. In this case Aidan Gallagher, who according to Google is 5'5" - but other sources say 5'8" - which, for me, is still a tall person - my height would be 5'0.5" - I go by that height sometimes, other times I don't give it any importance, but in some fanfic I've read I saw that made Five around 6'1" or a little taller. Which I'm not critical of, but I'm curious how other people interpret Five's height in fanfics and wanted to know your take on that. How do you imagine or interpret Five Hargreeves' height? How do you see him in a relationship with someone who is taller than him?
Wow, this is a very insightful question! You bring up a lot of good points here. It's true, in most fanfics, including all of mine, the OC/female love interest is shorter than Five. He is not, obviously, canonically a tall man. We even see when he's up against his old self in season two that they're essentially the same height, even though his body is supposed to be 13 at the time.
Like you pointed out, I have always just had it in my head that given the chance to start over in his younger body, and with proper nutrition, sunscreen, etc he'd age a lot more gracefully (not that Old Five isn't a fox, because he is!) and that includes height.
I don't have a real answer as to why I, personally, make him taller than the love interests in my fics. I suppose it's just a reflection of my own stature, because I'm short, too. I like the idea of him being able to overpower and easily fling her around. There's a lot of wall-banging in my fics, and I suppose that just makes it logistically easier. 😂
I don't ever say how tall he is in my stories, but in my head he's probably around 5'10"? I'm not sure, exactly. But I would not say any taller than 6 foot. I like to think of him as still smaller than Klaus and Luther, but maybe around the same height as Diego. Which, according to Google, David is 5'11" so that tracks.
There is no reason to believe, however, that Five wouldn't love to be with a taller woman, too. I can imagine that he might really like being the shorter one in the relationship. Maybe he'd even want her to wear high heels a lot, just to make her even taller. And regardless of height differences, I would imagine he could still overpower her and do a lot of damage to her in a good way, assuming that's what she likes, too. Or maybe he wants to be overpowered by her. So many options!
Basically, I think Five would have no preference over height, as long as he's getting laid on a regular basis. The man has needs and he's not going to be picky in how they are achieved. 😂
Thanks for the ask! Good questions!
