On May Day 2017, anarchists participated in lively demonstrations all around the United States, from the heartland to the coasts. In the Northwest, Seattle witnessed a successful block party at the site of a juvenile corrections center, while in Olympia anarchists barricaded train tracks to oppose fracking and clashed with police. Support arrestees here. Yet Portland, Oregon may take the cake for the most creative and combative May Day. Demonstrators not only defended themselves from unprovoked attacks from police who declared the march a riot—they also introduced exciting new innovations into the aesthetic of the black bloc street presence. Here, comrades from Portland explain their goals with the giant spiders they created for May Day, and offer a helpful guide for those who wish to make spiders of their own.
In an effort to bridge the gap between art and activism, giant spiders were assembled off-site and pushed up the street to the demonstration, stocked with water bottles, snacks, earplugs, and other party favors. The idea was to narrow the divide between “us” and “them” that often exists at demonstrations, and it was a complete success. We performed community outreach, engaged in cultural development, boosted morale, provided crucial supplies, and created an amazing photo opportunity in the process.
The concept is multi-dimensional: it works on many different levels. The idea began from frustrations around attendance at local demonstrations. In Portland, where the majority of citizens seem to be white, middle-class, and apolitical on account of these privileges, they don’t show up unless a demonstration concerns their interests specifically. However, Portlanders are fascinated by their own love of art and “wacky” stuff as well as the commodification of protest as “funtertainment.” We decided to embrace this love of the “weird” to test whether a hyper-localized approach to engaging people could succeed.
Our tactical art enabled us to fill a supporting role for other participants in the march, helping challenge narratives that the black bloc is an “othered” or “othering” tactic. Whether this separation is intentional or not, the fact remains that the general public is often hesitant to engage with us. Bearing that in mind—as well the tendency of the Portland Police Department to brutally shut down demonstrations—we stocked our Spiders with fliers, water, LAW (liquid, antacid, water, the eyewash with which street medics treat pepper spray), ear plugs, and snacks. We also included a few other party favors, because anarchy needs revelry!
We intentionally engaged with the folks around us. A lot of people walked up to ask what the spiders meant! It was inspiring to see so much dialogue between folks in everyday garb and folks in black bloc. We explained the ideas behind our actions as anarchists and the creations themselves: the three spiders representing Mutual Aid, Solidarity, and Direct Action.
A word about symbolism. The idea of using the spider as an icon of resistance is that spiders are always there watching, waiting, and keeping the environment free of pesky insects and other parasites that consume resources without supporting their fellow beings. While we may look scary, we’re here with you and for you. We are the spiders, and the insects are the societal ills that we fight against.
The symbolism of the black widow spider is rich with history that guides our work. We want to contribute to that rich history, adding our own interpretations. Mutual Aid, Solidarity, Direct Action are our black widow’s cruses. (Crux? Curse? Cures?)
In regards to developing our own culture, there are many barriers we face in this process. State repression is the biggest threat, of course. The specter of state repression can complicate organizing, planning, and building trust in our communities. Portland has a history of repression and slander, ruining the lives of activists and anarchists; these horror stories reverberate throughout the underground. We can’t allow ourselves to be publicly disparaged and forced into hiding by our adversaries and their culture war, so we create as a political act. Creating is intuitively human: we plan, we build, we think, we conspire, we imagine. It is also an activity in which everyone can engage to some degree while building new skills. It enables us to get to know each other, build trust, and share time and company.
More globally, seizing the Spectacle is a step towards our goals, because it allows us to dictate our own narratives. With the development of Public Relations and Social Engineering, the visage of capitalism has come to define its delusional reality. To paraphrase Guy Debord, lived experiences are now taken in as a collection of representational images. We can tell our own stories and show the general public what these three principles mean in action. We can create our own mythos, speaking out on our own terms, in our own language, with our own symbols. The state and media dictate too much of what we’re allowed to say and how it’s spun—it’s time to spin our own webs to connect and fortify our relationships.
We are building the bridges we need to move forward. The existing connections between art, activism, and anarchism are fiery and well-storied. The new wave of repression under Trump’s regime is still building steam, but it is already proving dangerous. We need to be more careful than ever. Art allows us to demonstrate and show our fangs, and we can use art to empower those around us.

[ 📹 Scenes from En Neccar Hospital after Zionist air forces bombarded the Al-Siyamat neighborhood of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, killing four Palestinian civilians, including at least on child, and wounding a number of others.]
🇮🇱⚔️🇵🇸 🚀🚀🏘️💥🚑 🚨
SIX NEW MASSACRES OVERNIGHT ON DAY 174 OF "ISRAEL'S" CONTINUED GENOCIDE IN THE GAZA STRIP
On the 174th day of "Israel's" ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) committed a total of 6 new massacres of Palestinian families, resulting in the deaths of at least 62 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounded another 91 others over the previous 24-hours.
According to sources with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), the Israeli occupation released seven kidnapped personnel, held in detention for the last 47 days after the occupation army arrested them during the raid on Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Yunis, in the south of Gaza, including the Director of Ambulance and Emergency Services for Gaza, Mohammed Abu Musabeh. The Israeli occupation continues to hold in detention eight other members of PRCS crews who's fate remains unknown at this time.
Sources with PRCS also said they transported the bodies of two martyrs from Al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp, north of Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, after being targeted by Israeli artillery shelling.
Local medical sources also reported the deaths of four civilians, and several others wounded, after Zionist artillery forces shelled central and southern Gaza.
In yet another atrocity committed by the Zionist occupation army, witnesses reported six civilians were killed while waiting for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Industrial Zone, east of Gaza City, after being targeted by occupation bullets and artillery shelling.
IOF warplanes also bombed an electrical appliances center in the Jabalia Refugee Camp, in the north of Gaza, causing a fire to break out.
Due to "Israel's" starvation campaign in the Gaza Strip, medical sources say 12 patients died as a result of malnutrition and dehydration, in conjunction with a lack of proper medical care and medicines, at Al-Shifa Medical Complex in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, during the 11 day siege of the hospital.
Occupation fighter jets also bombarded several residential homes in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, while also bombing a building on Hamid Street in the Al-Shati Camp, west of Gaza City, resulting in a number of casualties.
Similarly, Zionist Merkava tanks fired shells in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, west of Gaza City, while another civilian was martyred as a result of being directly targeted by occupation forces in Hamad Town, north of Khan Yunis, in the south of Gaza.
Israeli occupation warplanes also bombarded with intense firebelts the city of Khan Yunis, while simultaneously shelling various neighborhoods in the north of the Palestinian enclave.
Zionist aircraft also bombed the city of Beit Lahia, in the northern Gaza Strip, near the Al-Qassam Mosque, wounding dozens of civilians.
Occupation fighter jets also launched firebelts targeting the town of Al-Isra, northwest of the Al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp.
Previously, Zionist occupation forces bombed the Ajor Family home, west of Gaza City, killing eight civilians, including women and children, and wounding several others.
Occupation airstrikes also targeted residential neighborhoods in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City, martyring seven civilians and wounding a number of others.
In another occupation strike, Zionist warplanes bombed the Committees responsible for securing aid in the north of Gaza, in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, killing four officials.
Meanwhile, Zionist fighter jets bombarded a residential home in the Al-Beltaji Street in the Al-Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, resulting in the martyrdom of three Palestinians and wounding at least 20 others, while intense shelling by occupation forces also occurred of the Al-Muznar residential building, killing a number of Palestinians.
The Israeli occupation army also kidnapped and detained 8 aid truck drivers after returning from the northern Gaza Strip to distribute humanitarian aid.
At the same time, Zionist artillery detatchments shelled the Al-Saraya area and Al-Nasr Street in Gaza City.
In the central Gaza Strip, intermittent bombing and shelling of the Al-Bureij Refugee Camp killed at least five civilians, while two others were martyred after occupation air forces bombed the neighboring Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp.
Similarly, a woman and her young daughter were killed after IOF warplanes bombed the town of Al-Zawaida, in the central Gaza Strip.
Elsewhere, occupation aircraft raided the city of Rafah twice, killing 15 civilians and wounding dozens of others, while four were killed after after IOF air forces bombed an agricultural greenhouse adjacent to a center for displaced civilian families near the Shaboura Camp, in central Rafah.
As a result of "Israel's" ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the infinitely rising death toll has now exceeded 32'552 Palestinians martyred, more than 25'000 of which being women and children according to the United States Pentagon, while another 74'980 civilians have been wounded since the start of the current round of Zionist aggression beginning on October 7th, 2023.

GAZA STRIP(Praxis Redacted) (RNN) — Since this morning, 28 martyrs have ascended in the Gaza Strip, 20 of them in the besieged north.
Heavy shelling targeted south of Gaza City and areas of the center at dawn today, and the IOF began moving vehicles in the north and center of Rafah, coinciding with demolitions in the area.
In Jabalia and Beit Lahia, the situation remains dire as the three-week siege continues, with continuous shelling and gunfire, as well as intermittently in Tal Al-Hawa and Al-Zaytoun in Gaza City.
At 7 AM, a martyr ascended and number of citizens were wounded by quadcopters dropping bombs in Jabalia Al-Nazla, while artillery shelling continued for hours on Jabalia and Beit Lahia. This coincided with demolitions east of Jabalia, and shelling west of Rafah.
In the morning, three more martyrs and injuries were reported due to artillery shelling in Jabalia Al-Balad, as the IOF once again besieged the Khalifa School in Beit Lahia (Media 2), which houses displaced people.
The IOF continued to bomb the vicinity of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, and the hospital remains besieged. All staff were abducted except for the director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, one medical staff worker, and a cleaner.
The female medical staff were held in an isolated room without food or water, and the men were taken away, stripped and handcuffed, to an unknown location. Dr. Abu Safiya's son Ibrahim also ascended to martyrdom. Hours later, a few doctors and nurses were released and arrived at Sheikh Radwan Clinic. However, at 3:00 PM, the IOF abducted Dr. Mohammed Obaid, head of the Reconstructive and Orthopedic Surgery Department in Al-Awda Hospital in Tal Al-Zaatar, from Kamal Adwan Hospital.
The Civil Defense put out an urgent call stating that they are unable to respond to numerous distress calls in Jabalia and Jabalia Al-Nazla, reminding that Civil Defense is completely disabled in the northern Gaza Strip.
Coinciding with gunfire east of Khan Younis, shelling and gunfire persisted northwest of Rafah at 9:00 AM. A martyr had also ascended by a drone strike in Zuweida in the central #Gaza Strip. A martyr also ascended by quadcopter shooting east of Bureij camp.
At this time, the IOF withdrew from the vicinity of Kamal Adwan Hospital and returned to Beit Lahia, having burned ambulances and destroyed the hospitals facilities and its surroundings. Dozens of unidentified, unreported martyrs remain in the yard, unburied. At least 8 martyrs were recovered hours later. The attached media shows some scenes of the vicinity of Kamal Adwan afterwards.
The director of field hospitals stated:
"The smell of death pervades the surroundings of Kamal Adwan Hospital. The occupation destroyed the medicines in Kamal Adwan to prevent us from saving the wounded. We don't know the fate of the detained medical personnel."
Quadcopter drones continued to fire in Jabalia in the north, wounding several, and dozens of homes were burned by the IOF in the Faluja neighborhood and Beit Lahia (Media 3). Two more martyrs ascended by artillery shelling in Jabalia Al-Balad, a martyr in Beit Lahia, a martyr near Abu Tamam School, two martyrs by shelling in Jabalia camp, and several more martyrs and wounded were reported due to the IOF bombing the Maqat family home in Sheikh Radwan, north of Gaza City in the northern Gaza Strip. Civil Defense crews tried to recover a large number of martyrs near the Maqat family home with minimal means, but were able to rescue a young boy alive, in addition to two martyrs and four wounded (Media 7-10)
Bombings persisted in Tal Al-Hawa and Beit Lahia at 11:00 AM. Later, the IOF bombed the vicinity of the Shimaa School, which houses thousands of displaced people.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Police are searching for suspects connected to an assault from Sunday morning in South Oklahoma City that left one man beaten, bloodied, and abandoned.
A group of teens have been arrested, but more are suspected to be connected.
“That is disgusting,” said Mike Martin who has lived near that area for decades.
It was May 26th when the assault is said to have occurred according to court documents.
In the Northwest Corner of a 7/11 gas station near Kentucky Avenue and Southwest 59th Street, Tilman Shannon was seen getting yelled at by people in a vehicle.
Surveillance footage showed several teens yelling and threatening Shannon. Shannon tried to run away but was beaten down near the dumpster on the opposite end of the parking lot.
“Investigators later learned due to some video in the area that this was an attack on the victim from several people,” said Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Dillon Quirk.
Sgt. Quirk said that it was the gas station’s surveillance video that showed nine people that surrounded Shannon and beat him relentlessly.
The video that showed the most disturbing actions was said to be found on social media. Allegedly one of the suspects Veronica Benavente had streamed the attack on her Instagram page.
Police said that she is heard in the video, which is 1 minute and 30 seconds, she tells Shannon, “We are kids.” She continued to talk and call somebody an expletive. An arrest affidavit reported that Benavente is heard using racist slurs and racist expletives.
The group is said to have bragged about being kids in the fight and laughed several times.
At one point one of the teenagers grabbed Shannon’s Colostomy bag and pulled it out, his intestinal tract came out with it.
| READ LOCAL NEWS > Photographer, psychic medium arrested for alleged domestic assault in Edmond >
“He had some pretty severe injuries and pretty significant trauma,” said Sgt. Quirk.
“That is so scary,” said Trisha Tyler who moved to the neighborhood around five years ago. “This neighborhood isn’t usually all that dangerous,” said Tyler when asked if she sees crime often here.
“It’s not that common but there are a lot of gangs around here,” said Mike Martin.
Martin said that he has lived in the same house for several decades and gangs have been very common.
“Not that long ago I saw some elementary-age kids in front of my house with bandanas on and I was like, ‘What are you guys doing?’ They yelled something and acted all tough,” said Martin.
Eventually, Shannon was taken to OU Medical Center with severe injuries and is expected to survive.
Three juvenile suspects were found, and two adult suspects which included Benavente and 18-year-old Eric Villagomez were arrested. Officials said that there are four other suspects seen in the video who have not been found.
If you know anything about the incident or have any information for police you are asked to contact Crimestoppers at 405-235-7300.

Israeli Forces continue to advance deep into the urban development in both the north and south of the Gaza Strip.
At the same time, the Israeli Air Force is bombarding the enclave, destroying all high-rise structures.
In the northwest, the Israelis managed to advance in the Al-Nazl area in Jabalia, where heavy fighting ensued. Nevertheless, earlier the IDF command claimed to have established full control over the locality.
To the northeast, the Israelis are engaged in fierce fighting in the vicinity of the Sheikh Radwan Reservoir.
Should the Israel Defense Forces advance in this direction, they will succeed in cutting Jabalia off from Gaza.
On the southern flank, Israeli units continue to clear the area near the Baptist Hospital.
Palestinian militias occasionally conduct sorties, but are unable to achieve significant results.
In the south of the enclave, Israeli units continue to fight in the residential area of Khan Younis.
However, due to the lack of manpower, it is rather problematic to establish the configuration of the front line in the town.
East of Bani Suheila, the Israel Defense Forces managed to perform the first encirclement.
Hamas fighters are counterattacking, but they have not yet been able to break the borders of the encirclement.
Meanwhile, the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border has significantly escalated.
An IDF airstrike on a former medical center took place in Buslayya, which Israelis say is linked to Hezbollah.

Casualties
11,078 killed*, including 4,506 children, and 27,490 wounded in Gaza
184 Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem
Israel revises its estimated October 7 death toll down from 1,400 to 1,200
*The casualty numbers from Gaza have not been updated in at least 2 days, as the “collapse of services and communications” has made it nearly impossible for the health ministry to document and update the numbers
Key Developments
Israeli heavy fire targeting Al-Shifa trapped thousands of people who were displaced, wounded, sick, and medical staff inside it, without electricity, food, water, or fuel.
Al-Jazeera reported that Israeli forces are located approximately 700 meters from the Al-Shifa hospital’s gates, and firing, and armed clashes could be heard in the distance.
WHO: “There are reports that some people who fled the hospital have been shot at, wounded and even killed.”
Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City stopped working completely after running out of fuel to generate electricity.
Doctors at al-Ahli Arab Hospital say it is now the last functioning hospital in Gaza City and the northern areas and that it is “overwhelmed” with casualties.
Israeli forces are surrounding the medical quarter in the center of Gaza City, where three major hospitals are located, including Al-Nasr Medical Complex, Al-Rantisi, and St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital.
Israel said 43 soldiers were killed since October 28, and Hamas released footage of targeting tanks in Gaza.
Hamas’s Izz el-Din al-Qassam Brigades spokesperson said that fighters documented the destruction, completely or partially, of 160 Israeli military vehicles, which includes tanks, bulldozers and personnel carriers.
The Israeli army said that it killed 150 Hamas fighters last week during battles in the Al-Shati refugee camp northwest of Gaza City, and claimed that it captured a station of Hamas’s Badr unit.
Thousands protest worldwide while Israel carries on arrest campaign in the occupied West Bank.

❤️ Happy WorldBuilding Wednesday! ❤️
What are your cities or towns like? Feel free to talk about the layouts or the people or the architecture, etc. and to talk about more than one if you'd like!
Tori how did you know
I've literally been brainstorming Shapeshifter's city all day. I stared at topographical maps of various port cities this morning for way too long lmao. Sidenote: maybe I should actually name the city instead of just calling it 'the city'?
Anyway, at the moment I have two original cities/towns in Shapeshifter:
'the city' which Cryptid gets mad about every time I describe as "a combo of New York, Seattle, Portland, and Gotham"
Perrin Falls - a small mountain town in the mid/west of Wyoming situated uncomfortably close to a Fae gate. Fun fact: me and the husband had one of our rare argument about the naming and geographic placement of this town because he's from the county I chose for Perrin Falls (that was deliberate lol) and he has Opinions.
And since I'm working on the city, I may as well infodump here~
The city is technically on the Pacific Northwest coast, but I refuse to actually give any legitimate geographic location. It's got a population of roughly 700k-800k, though with the metro area that bumps it up to over 3mil. The city started as a fur trading depot way back in the 1790's, and has always had some section of the population dedicated to smuggling and similar illegal activities. It slowly built it's way up from a small trading fort to a city of considerable size in the late 1800's due to it's convenient location: straddling a freshwater river that ran into a deep and naturally-protected bay. The original city was built above a warren of smuggler tunnels that saw regular use until the mid/late 1800's when a large part of the city burned to the ground, and city planners opted to grade parts of the city in an attempt to flatten some of the more steep areas. This destroyed some of the smuggler tunnels, but also buried parts of the city that had already been rebuilt, leaving a new layer of underground passageways for ne'er-do-wells to utilize. Many modern citizens of the city aren't even aware of these passages - though urban legends abound. Some brave souls venture down occasionally, but for the most part the underground belongs to the outcasts.
Life in the city is dark and damp. It rains roughly 330 days of the year, thanks to the mountains to the east creating a natural barrier for moisture rolling off the Pacific. Rain is usually light and misty, but occasionally a storm will roll in that turns the streets to rivers and chases even the most stubborn denizen inside. Most locals take the rain in stride - opting for water-resistant or magically charmed outerwear. To combat the dreariness of constantly-overcast skies, most businesses - and even the more outgoing residences - opt for bright neon signs and displays, and large awnings.
The city is most well-known for its statistically-large supernatural population; one of the largest in the United States. Roughly 15% of the population is supernatural - the large majority of these being shapeshifters of varying type. There are also an unusually large number of witches in the city, which only adds to the image of the city as one of the 'most magically charge population centers' in the States. Due to the fact that a distinct percentage of the population prefers to - or can only - exist at night, there is a very active and diverse nightlife. It's not uncommon to find events that are only held at night - such as markets and festivals - as well as businesses that opt to have 'night hours' as well as 'day hours'. (Unfortunately, even though a 6th of the city is supernatural, there are very few police precincts that will hire a supernatural, so many laws are skewed towards the mundane citizens.)
Economically, the city thrives on it's active port and trade capabilities, as well as a booming tourist sector. It also houses a large life sciences and medical research sector, with many companies focused on merging technology and magic. But everyone knows that it's still the criminal element of the city that holds the most power, the most wealth. Some flaunt their power, daring the (often understaffed and under-equipped) justice system to do something about them. Some prefer to work behind the scenes, buying out politicians and CEOs and chiefs of police to ensure they can continue to exist unmolested.
My current goal with the city is to make an actual map of it. Mostly just the overall geography and major sectors of it, so that I can better describe the important parts lol. As you can see, I am... very obsessed with the worldbuilding.

Rita McDowell, 16 (USA 1975)
4 days before her death, 16-year-old Rita McDowell had a 16-week abortion done by Robert J. Sherman at an abortion facility he operated in Northwest Washington. It’s worth noting that even before he killed Rita, Sherman had already been expelled from the local gynecological society, reprimanded and censured by the area’s medical society, and recommended for disciplinary action by the OB-GYN department of the Washington Hospital Center.
Rita’s mother, Lupe M. McDowell, testified that nobody told her that there were any problems with Rita’s abortion. But as the mother and daughter left the office, Rita told her, "Oh, Mama, I feel like I had one hundred needles in me." The day after the abortion, Rita was already sick and spent all day in bed. Lupe told the crowd that she telephoned Sherman's office, but Sherman wouldn’t even talk to her. His receptionist said to bring Rita back to the facility two days later - one day after an already scheduled appointment, which Lupe presumed was canceled.
By the third day after the abortion, Rita was worse. In the early morning hours of March 7, Rita woke up screaming and then collapsed in her terrified mother's arms. She was rushed to the Doctors at the hospital where doctors removed the macerated corpse from her uterus, but it was too little too late. Only 3 hours after Rita was admitted, Dr. Winston H. Blake realized that her prognosis for survival was extremely poor. In those few hours, her already terrible condition had rapidly worsened. She was in shock and had a terrible infection. Sadly, she died early the next morning.
It was discovered that Sherman left fetal body parts and/or pieces of the placenta inside of Rita, something he frequently did on purpose to charge his clients more money for more operations. Sherman was charged with the second-degree murder of the high school student, but pled guilty to 26 counts of perjury (which he committed in an attempt to cover up the circumstances surrounding his mistreatment of 16-year-old Rita McDowell) to avoid the murder charge. Rita's mother sued Sherman, and he settled out-of-court for $525,000.
Rita was survived by her mother Lupe and her little son. Had the abortion never happened, Rita’s son would have had his mother and his sibling. Everything Rita suffered was completely preventable.

In Detroit, the spatial mismatch of people to jobs and opportunities is stark. It gets all the more glaring when the Census Bureau (LEHD) reveals that just 30% of available jobs in Detroit are held by Detroit residents. The Opportunity Index by the Kirwan Institute showed this same mismatch nearly a decade ago and included an update for the Kresge Foundation. Opportunity had improved in greater downtown and worsened in Detroit’s neighborhoods between 2000 and 2010. The more recent Opportunity Atlas from Opportunity Insights, Harvard University, and Brown University builds off Raj Chetty’s research into “Which neighborhoods in America offer children the best chance to rise out of poverty?" Here, it's clear that healthcare, education, and government sectors anchor Detroit employment, which is why Detroit’s three main hospital zones heavily highlight jobs. This is evident in greater downtown with the Detroit Medical Center in Midtown (along with Wayne State University), in Northwest Detroit where Sinai-Grace is located, and along the Eastside border with St. John’s Hospital and a number of skilled nursing facilities.
