Barry: Season 4 Review
With the latest season, Barry has to be cemented as one of the best shows. Period.
If you're unaware of the future classic HBO show, I recommend a watch absolutely. On March 5th, 2018, the first season of Barry started to air. Initially, the show followed Bill Hader as Barry Berkman, a former military veteran turned hitman who pursued acting. Its first season is this great blend of drama and comedy as Barry meets his acting teacher Gene Cousineau, played by the immaculate Henry Winkler. Accompanying the amazing duo are an equally outstanding cast with Sarah Goldberg as Sally, Barry's love interest, criminals NoHo Hank and Critobal, played respectively by Anthony Carrigan and Michael Irby, and the man who groomed Barry to be a killer, Fuches, played by Stephen Root. Other characters are introduced throughout the seasons, but the aforementioned core players are show-stealers for four seasons straight. Barry, the show, may remain comedic throughout, but by season three, the show makes a darker turn. The comedy remains, but the drama is upped.
And with its final season, it's solidified as a top-tier show.
The show can shove a lot into its eight-episode season, but it doesn't feel bloated. Its eight-episode run has a perfect pace with every episode and every character getting ample time to breathe. The arc every character goes through by this final season is a fascinating endeavor as every character is nearly unrecognizable from who they were in the first season.
Some of the cast become genuinely unlikable yet still rich and complex, with a tangled web of complications plaguing and infecting their past and present. It's hard to root for certain characters by this point, but equally difficult to turn away from the screen as you're left dying to see what happens next or what each person's next action will be…
Not only does Bill Hader excel at acting as the titular character Barry, but he and Alec Berg truly crafted a masterpiece that warrants immense critical acclaim and praise. Everyone deserves so many awards this Emmy season for creating an excellent sendoff to a truly underrated piece of television. 5/5. Absolute recommendation, a must-watch.

BREAK!!**
Thursday, March 16th, 2023 (13:31) I'd have shared these sooner, being that it's been a full week already, but reportedly The Academy™ staging it's award ceremony within days of the "Craving" première has lead to delays in what Getty Images™ has been able to process. Be that as it may, here's a (somewhat belated) glimpse into the red carpet comings and goings of that evening:
http://www.gettyimages.com.au/search/2/image...
At the time of writing, there's but a mere nineteen images on display, despite it having been a sold out capacity crowd on the night... however this number will likely increase over time, I suspect.

Tuesday, March 28th, 2023 (23:32) Generally speaking, I don't make a habit of sharing material of this specific nature, as this isn't content I typically go in for, personally, but I do feel that "Craving" ought to be receiving more attention than I've been able to muster thus far, so here's a new review trailer, featuring pull quotes provided by the likes of The Independent Critic, Film Threat, PopHorror, Voices from the Balcony, Influx Magazine (& Entertainment News), along with those of IndyRed, for your considered attention:

Seeing what the critics have had to say in response to this J. Horton release, maybe take a look and judge for yourself.

Sunday, September 24th, 2023 (13:31) So, an intriguing (if not amusingly non sequitur) promotional campaign has been run over the past couple of months (that I'm only just now becoming privy to, for one reason or another), which I shall accordingly mirror serially in the comments below over the next week or so, in the interest of attracting "Craving" a little further attention here -- news to follow...
Sunday, October 1st, 2023 (23:32) The question needs to be asked: in the modern climate of agenda-driven editorials and politically-motivated misinformation, have YOU found yourself craving news with a little more... bite? Well then, look no further -- #CravingNews is now a thing (apparently!), and it's delivering all the hard-hitting facts you've been hungering for:
Sunday, October 8th, 2023 (13:31) With abominable headlines like this, one naturally feels compelled to ask: is it his FOOT that this philandering cryptid should be named after...? #CravingNews
Sunday, October 22nd, 2023 (13:31) Batboy couldn't possibly be wrong! #CravingNews
Sunday, October 22nd, 2023 (13:31) I've heard tell that one has to have their wits about them when frequenting a Cracker Barrel™, m'yes... #CravingNews
Monday, October 30th, 2023 (23:32) An honest peak behind the curtain: I unwittingly attached the wrong image to that previous entry for a while there, prematurely showcasing this article -- fixed now. I then went and FORGOT to update yesterday as planned -- so that which was initially presented seven days early is now being published a day late! Be that as it may, while I might have missed my deadline here, you sure wouldn't want to miss out on those highly sought-after Taylor Swift concert tickets... #CravingNews
Sunday, November 5th, 2023 (23:32) And to think, certain exponents are still harping on about the E-MAILS of Hillary Clinton...! #CravingNews
Sunday, November 12th, 2023 (13:31) Okay, so the previous edition of #CravingNews may have admittedly contained minor spelling errors... but now, thanks to the futuristic wonders of modern technology, such egregious misprints are most assuredly a thing of the past (plus, the truth about Mike Pence revealed...).
Sunday, November 19th, 2023 (23:32) Forget what you may or may not have read about Shrimp Basket™ and/or Airbnb™, #CravingNews has the real scoop, and it ought to be music to everyone's ears -- "Craving" is making noise on a certain FOX™-owned over-the-top content platform...!
#TrustUs #WeDoOurOwnResearch #SeeBelow
Tuesday, October 31st, 2023 (23:32) It may have become apparent through several of those satirical #CravingNews headlines that "Craving" is actually now available (for FREE!) on the Tubi™ ad-supported streaming service -- you can actively see for yourself right here:
http://www.tubitv.com/movies/100001990
Being that it's now October 31st, and therefore Halloween (wOoOoOoOoOh!), why not cap off the #Spooktober season by giving this a look? Of course, in the event that you enjoy the presentation, please do consider paying to rent or purchase the movie through one of the aforementioned outlets, so as to help ensure the production of future projects of this ilk. #SupportIndependentCinema
Tuesday, December 12th, 2023 (13:31) Some of you who have been paying attention over the past nine months will have noticed that the video thumbnail featured at the outset of this running presentation has since changed -- this has been updated to better market the physical distribution of "Craving", which is now commercially available on DVD and blu-ray through the following merchant outlets: Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ4C2QMN http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ4GC4WL Walmart™: http://www.walmart.com/ip/5054134896 http://www.walmart.com/ip/5096250790 Best Buy™: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/36099389.p?skuId=360... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/36099316.p?skuId=360... So if you've streamed the movie to your satisfaction, now's your opportunity to own a copy of your own for prosperity, which can only been seen as something to smile about!
Thursday, March 14th, 2024 (23:32) 2024 UPDATE: I've been meaning to share this for some time, in all honesty, because I'm genuinely impressed with the outcome... and I think you will be too! While "Craving" primarily employs traditional practical effects to achieve the disturbingly tangible sensibilities of its visuals, digital effects were still used sparingly in order to enhance what was captured in-camera, most notably during the flashback sequences. For these, in particular, emerging software applications were utelised in order to de-age our actors, as showcased here by the industrious Brook Hubbs:
http://www.facebook.com/214902598/videos/1330317184494496
It's no secret that I'm not a fan of the technology -- AT ALL -- but even so, when it's applied appropriately, the results really can speak volumes for themselves. Given the modest budget we had to work with for this movie, the augmented footage is remarkably convincing, I feel, and truly enhances the overall presentation, selling those sequences in ways that probably wouldn't have worked otherwise. I'm not ashamed to say that there's a degree of bona fide pride that comes with putting out vision of this respectable quality.

recently watched HBO’s Barry. It’s one that’s been on my list for a while and it did not disappoint. It hits on a lot of Jekyll and Hyde notes with the duality of it’s main character Barry, who is part hit man part actor in both seasons.
The strongest part of the series, in my opinion, is the writing. Bill Hader acts as the primary writer and director for the series, along with co-creator Alec Berg. It’s best described as a tragicomedy, often light and surprisingly humorous, but equally dark and gritty, unapologetic about the murders Barry must commit to maintain his lifestyle. So much of it plays into the LA notion of trying on faces and new identities, as Barry finds himself working a job there in the pilot episode, unsure about his path as a murderer-for-hire. Each episode oscillates between light and dark, the right decision and the wrong one, truth-telling and lying. It’s thrilling, with a cast full of hard-hitters from Bill Hader’s convincingly dramatic and complex Barry, to Henry Winkler’s role as the narcissistic acting coach Gene Cousineau, to Anthony Carrigan’s charming take on the Chechen mobster, NoHo Hank.
I’ve lost a bit of steam on why this show is good. But, essentially, it seems to me that it’s an environment the whole cast and crew thrives in, and that gives a great payoff for viewers. The plot is always twisting away from what one expects, some things that could take up a whole season are resolved in a matter of minutes, or vice versa. The jokes are delightful, and most importantly to me, believable in a natural conversation, and the acting is rock solid. Sarah Goldberg’s character Sally acts as one of the many positive foils to the negative energy on the show, acting as a spitfire in a rather (purposely) terrible group of actors in the acting class. The dream-team collaboration aspect I admire so much about the show-runners is described well in a panel I watched yesterday. In it, Hader touches on the real-life way he worked out a scene with Goldberg, as well as the overall energy of the show, all which lends to an excellent production.
Similar to Hader’s work with Seth Myers, Fred Armisen, and John Mulaney on both SNL and Documentary Now!, it is clear everyone is truly working hard on something great, and having a great time doing it. Barry has the heart of a passion project but the breakneck energy of some of the best HBO dramas that have graced screens in recent years. It’s light and fun, but also deeply thought-provoking and symbolic in many ways. It asks so many big questions to its characters; Who do I want to be? , Am I living a lie? , Am I making the right decisions? , Do I protect myself or the people I love?
Ultimately it’s fantastic, and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s deeply inspiring. I suppose I have to say that, as I’ve been writing pseudo-reviews as of late, but it is. Also if you don’t think Bill Hader can pull off a dramatic role, you’re sorely mistaken.

Carpenter’s Hall at The Carpenter Hotel
You know that giddy feeling that overcomes you when meeting someone you admire in your industry, or when you just really hit it off with someone new? Well, I used to get this feeling when dining out at new restaurants in NYC – especially if it was a long time coming from one of the chef moguls in town or a completely different cuisine than I’d ever tried. In 2017, there were very few places that opened like this in Austin. In 2018, there is definitely a shortlist for me where I walk in and think WE’VE FINALLY GOT IT— The Brewer’s Table, Intero, Suerte! Carpenter’s Hall at The Carpenter Hotel is off the charts in that category for me. When you walk in, it’s a hotel entrance which might throw you off, so you creep forward to the host stand wondering if you’re in the right place which creates some uncertainty yet excitement. The walls almost feel like a school and then BOOM, the sexy yet casual mood in the dining room hits you as the bright lights from the open kitchen help to guide you to your seat. I love nothing more than having a front row seat view into an open dining room so I can analyze the crowd while wondering who is this eager to venture to a new restaurant so early and this “in the know.” I love seeing their plates before I order, listening to how the staff greets you and how they decide to tell you about the menu. Do they tell you that you need 6 plates per person to up-sell you or tell you their favorites and somehow list every dish on the menu? (Not helpful).
For my first impression, Carpenter’s Hall is seamless. The menu, style of service, and vibe replicates the exact feeling I used to have when reviewing a new, hyped up spot in NYC. While most people seem to be dissapointed by new establishments when there is too much hype, for me in Austin I feel lucky that we gain a new treasure and new place to eat. We have a dining scene that I have seen truly blossom in the last two years even without countless big names and larger groups that make strides nationwide like Major Food Group (Carbone), Dave Chang’s Momofuku Empire, NoHo Hospitality (Andrew Carmellini), etc.
Carpenter’s Hall provides a sense of security for the future of the Austin dining scene. It’s no surprise that they matched a lot of great talent from Portland, NYC, and locally to create a space in Austin that is really going to shape the next year and continue to set high expectations for new comers. The casual dining room with simple banquettes is shaped in a way that you can really see who is who, and it creates a fun, “going out,” atmosphere which I think can be tough to find at times. The menu reminds me of Cervo’s in NYC where you look at it and are unsure how it’s all going to play out together, but once the dishes hit the table, you’re wondering if it’s possible to order the rest of the menu and still have room.
Now onto the food–> there are a lot of small snacks to start off with like marinated olives, radish with green goddess, but SAVE room for all the upcoming homemade breads and pastas. You’ll need every square inch you can get. I loved the Stracciatella with Dragon Tongue Beans and Tomato. The buttery toast dipped into the mixture and delicious cheese transports you to Italy. I also loved the Escarole Avocado Caesar with croutons and pecorino sardo. Salads can be really exciting or really disappointing and the large crunchy leaves with just the right amount of dressing works well with the avocado and a Texas nod. I love seafood, but the Spaghetti with Clams and Garlic out shined the Crispy Fluke. Chek yes to made from scratch and al dente noodles and cavatelli. This is all the food you want to eat and flirt with when dining out. You can’t make this at home. The Cavatelli is a play on cacio e pepe and it’s done WELL. It’s made with pecorino, lemon, and black pepper. You’ll also witness a giant Chicken Schnitzel dancing through the room that looks large enough to feed a party of 4. Next time I’ll get the Steak Frites. Don’t miss the Shrimp Fried Rice with pimenton and hazelnut salsa. It’s $12 and to be honest I would go sit at the bar alone and just indulge in that. You might think it’s strange to be on this menu, but again Carpenter’s Hall is serving food you want to eat and is a menu that cannot be put in a box. We skipped the dinner dessert menu which had a giant piece of Carrot Cake that I have still been thinking about. Have no fear though, my pal Andrew saved us some Sea Salt Chocolate Chip cookies from the hotel’s coffee shop, called Hot L Coffee. We immediately annihilated two of these masterpieces from the to-go box at the table before our fluke was cleared. No one is surprised here.
(Coffee Shop Sitting Area) I’m happy to welcome some new folks in town and a new restaurant and hotel space that fits right into the neighborhood. Whether you are looking for a space to work in during the day, a date night, dinner with parents, or just a swell meal, this place is truly worth a shot!

‘Barry’ Review: Season 2 Builds a Brilliant Black Comedy That Earns Its Darkness
In the oft-overlapping world of prestige TV, a common solution to the sophomore slump is to go darker. Some programs take this literally, like “Ozark” with its muddy visual template, while others lean into the more painful themes from Season 1, like “13 Reasons Why” and its redundant circling of teen suicide. After all, one of the best ways to hide a bad case of writers’ block — or otherwise mask the qualitative decline of a formerly strong show — is to make it hard to watch. Who would dare criticize something so bold, so important, so sad?
Well, “Barry” Season 2 is harder to watch. It’s darker, more intense, and seems to tick off many of the warning signs listed above. Yet just as its original premise is the kind of pitch that shouldn’t play — but does, and does oh so very well — so too is its second season a brilliant paradox. For every step co-creators Alec Berg and Bill Hader take deeper into Barry’s haunted past, the growing shadows only provide sharper edges for the HBO series’ cutting comedy. If “Barry” played it safe during parts of Season 1, it’s not anymore. The darkness and light play perfectly off each other, creating yet another fascinating and hilarious season, and one determined to be true to its own twisted identity.
Related:‘Barry’ First Trailer: TV’s Favorite Hitman Works on His Memoirs in Season 2
So far, “Barry” gives every indication it will slide further and further into the daunting corners of its lead character’s psyche, as the first three episodes force the hitman-turned-actor to confront long-repressed sides of himself. Barry (Hader), who may have earned the nickname “Baz” during the break (captions will have to confirm the mumbly dialogue) has made a few key changes to distance himself from his old life. He’s not accepting contract gigs anymore. Instead, he’s working for lululemon alongside his acting class friend, Sasha (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), hocking stretchy pants and branded hats while practicing his accent work.
Anthony Carrigan in “Barry”
Isabella Vosmikova/HBO
Speaking of, he’s doubled down on acting, throwing himself wholeheartedly into the class and preparing a show with his fellow thespians-in-training. Barry’s even taken on a bit of a leadership role in the studio. He’s far less timid and much more confidant, on stage and off. There’s only one problem: Gene (Henry Winkler) doesn’t feel like teaching anymore; not since his girlfriend Janice (Paula Newsome) went missing. The police aren’t exactly giving up, but the charismatic acting instructor sure seems to be, and his whole class is down in the dumps because of it.
Related:Hidden Among All the Familiar WGA TV Winners: Hope For Offbeat Shows
What’s a killer to do? Barry, having lived around death most of his adult life, is unfazed by Moss’ disappearance and Gene’s heartache, even though he’s ultimately responsible for both. Hader and Berg dodge the details of what happened after that Season 1 cliffhanger, when Barry and Janice exchanged gunfire and only the hitman returned to Gene’s cabin in the woods. But their fuzzy details aren’t for fear of engagement: Barry’s avoidance can only last so long — of Janice, of NoHo Hank (breakout Anthony Carrigan), of his past — and the initial Season 2 episodes find internal and external forces demanding the assassin to recognize his true feelings about his past. What is it about Barry that led him to turn to killing in the first place?
Darrell Britt-Gibson, Sarah Goldberg, D’Arcy Carden, and Henry Winkler in “Barry”
Isabella Vosmikova/HBO
On the one hand, he’s got his innocent-to-the-point-of-oblivious fellow actors. Their detachment from reality is captured in Barry’s new roommates casually ignoring their debts to Barry’s girlfriend, Sally (Sarah Goldberg), only playing the part of a partner instead of actually being one. She can’t see the difference, but Barry is starting to notice. Meanwhile, he’s got a slew of Chechen mobsters held off only by Hank’s word. They deal in extreme consequences, life or death, and don’t bother with the small stuff. If Barry pisses off his roommates, they might passive aggressively pout. If he pisses off Hank, he might get killed.
Stuck between these worlds — or, more specifically, wanting one while refusing to acknowledge he’s more at home in the other — Barry is a gripping character to study. He can easily recognize right and wrong, but as Gene drives him to “find his truth,” Barry edges toward accepting some very dark shit. The laughs come in fierce bursts of tension-popping one-liners and silly, unexpected transitions. “Barry” is deft at finding the right moments for jokes, and it’s amazing how many they’re able to pepper in through the well-rounded cast.
As far as black comedies go, the concept of finding big laughs in tough situations is nothing new: The most biting gags often grow from the gloomiest corners of the soul, but what Hader and Berg are doing with “Barry” isn’t focused on sharpening their fangs; they’re not setting up laughs through Barry’s descent, so much as they’re using them to coax us into analyzing one of television’s more challenging perspectives. Their interest lies in their lead, and so does the audience’s. Barry Berkman is on the verge of becoming the next Walter White, and “Barry” could very well go the “Breaking Bad” route if it wants to — that’s how dark the series is getting, and it’s not a front. It’s really, really good. Get ready.

Tucked into a blog post published on Google’s website last week, amid news about the launch of the company’s third-generation Pixel smartphone, was the information that the tech giant is “joining forces” with Gwyneth Paltrow’s $250 million lifestyle empire, Goop.
So far, the partnership is limited: Goop will be selling Google Home smart speakers and accessories in its holiday pop-ups and permanent “goop Lab” stores. A Google spokesperson told me the devices will “be available to experience and shop” starting next week at the flagship Goop store in Los Angeles’s Brentwood neighborhood, running through the end of January 2019, and at Goop pop-up shops in various other cities during the holiday season.
Starting the first week of November, they’ll also be available at a new, yet-to-be-announced permanent Goop store in New York City. (A Goop representative confirmed a November 1 opening for the store, which will be in Noho.)
On its surface, this is a weird collab: What does a wildly expensive luxury brand, founded on the premise that not everyone can be beautiful and rich and healthy, want with a brand best known for an unsexy search engine running on the brain power of a bunch of nerds? What could one of the world’s most powerful technology and science companies gain from a startup that was recently fined $145,000 for telling women that putting a piece of rose quartz up their vagina would regulate their menstrual cycle and prevent uterine prolapse?
We really don’t have to look that closely. It’s an example of mutual corporate back-scratching that incorporates two of consumerism’s favorite buzzwords: “wellness” and “luxury.”
Kaitlyn Tiffany/Vox
Google has only been making physical devices for three years, and in trying to increase its market share, it’s been trying to court a more “aspirational” demographic to differentiate itself from Apple, which has a firm hold on the mass market. The Verge’s review of the Pixel 3 phone says it’s the first Google device that feels “premium” — it nixed the “faux-humility” of the Pixel 2’s plasticky coating and is now fully aluminum and glass.
To promote the phones, which cost upward of $1,000 with full storage (comparable to Apple’s last several iPhones, but a markup from the Pixel and the Pixel 2), Google has already hired Annie Leibovitz. The photographer best known for more than 40 years of defining celebrity photography on the covers of Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair will tour the country and take photos with the Pixel 3’s camera. Google also paid Condé Nast to use a Pixel 3 to shoot seven November magazine covers, including those for luxury lifestyle titles like Architecture Digest, W, Condé Nast Traveler, and GQ.
But Google’s new hardware marketing strategy isn’t just about luxury. It’s also about that word you’ve heard so many times it no longer feels like a word, more like a round, lozenge-shaped thing that falls out of your mouth every time it opens. Wellness.
Kaitlyn Tiffany/Vox
The company has been promoting the idea of “digital wellbeing” in its latest hardware and software push, emphasizing Android features that help you limit your time spent in various apps, with appealing graphics to show just how much time you’re wasting.
At Google’s annual I/O event in May, CEO Sundar Pichai promised that Google would bring its customers a new feeling this year, in addition to new products: “JOMO,” or the “joy of missing out.” You can “shush” a Google phone (put into do-not-disturb mode by setting it face down) or “wind down” a Google phone (set a bedtime that switches the screen to grayscale).
In a Wired feature from May, Arielle Pardes pointed out that the idea of “digital wellness” started at Google in 2012, when product designer Tristan Harris sent a company-wide memo about how unethical he thought Google’s Inbox app notifications were. It was a 144-page presentation titled “Call to Minimize Distraction and Respect Users’ Attention,” and earned Harris the role of “design ethicist” — a job created specifically for him, and which he held until 2016, when he left to start a nonprofit called Time Well Spent.
Pardes compared Google’s interest in digital wellbeing to other wellness trends, saying it makes living a more balanced life look easier than it really is. Which, incidentally, is Goop’s whole MO — albeit more often at price points that are totally inaccessible to the average consumer.
When Goop’s first permanent store opened in Los Angeles last fall, LA Weekly’s Jillian Scheinfeld described it as “equal parts ridic and chic as fuck.” It was advertised as a “bungalow” but actually set up as a series of “well-appointed” rooms in a fancy apartment — including a functioning kitchen, an apothecary, a greenhouse, and a living room with “midnight blue” wallpaper and a sheepskin throw on a walnut daybed.
Google’s holiday pop-up hardware store, which opens Thursday in New York, is the tech version of that. It’s in Soho, on Greene Street, approximately 200 feet from the Soho Apple Store, and sandwiched between a Dior boutique and the millennial-first couch company Burrow’s new “experiential” retail store.
Kaitlyn Tiffany/Vox
It’s a “literal interpretation of a hardware store,” except incredibly sleek — attended to by salespeople in bright white button-downs and $200 Timberlands, and full of bright white toolboxes and bright aluminum paint cans with labels that reflect Google hardware’s pastel color palette — sharply different from the bold primary colors of its web services.
There are Edison bulbs and chunks of rose quartz. There’s a bright miniature kitchen with copper mugs and a shiny French press, with an adorable aqua mini-stove and ’60s-vintage-inspired floor tiling that reads “Hey Google,” and a secret candy drawer that pops open upon asking the new Google Home Hub for a snack. (The Google Home Hub is the store’s star attraction, but you can also buy the Pixel 3, Google Home speakers, and other accessories.)
The idea of digital wellness started at Google, just as Goop was building out its empire
Each purchase can be gift-wrapped at a DIY station equipped with six different pastel-printed papers, balls of twine, and gold-handled scissors. You carry it home in a tote bag with one of Google’s new signature colors — “not pink,” “midnight blue,” “aqua,” or, unfortunately, “just white” — printed on the side. It comes with a manual, created by Canadian artist Hiller Goodspeed, which is full of dozens of pastel-hued illustrated guides like “How to take care of your (digital) self” and “How to start your next vacation faster.”
As deliberately Instagrammable, supposedly “interactive” retail experiences go, this one is really nice. The treehouse (there is a treehouse!) is stocked with Nancy Drew books. The smells are all fresh paint and money. There are multiple coloring lounges and dozens of opportunities to request that Google’s voice assistant perform strange tasks for you. (You can ask it to tell you a ghost story!)
It is also, as these retail experiences go, pretty typical, in that it is beautiful and aspirational. Everything that’s available to buy costs a lot of money, and I was dressed so improperly for the experience (in sneakers and a button-down black dress) that one of the store’s attendants came over and asked me to stop taking photos, implying that he wasn’t exactly sure how I’d found my way into a press preview.
All this to say: When Google products move over into Goop stores, the transition will be seamless. It’s the perfect aspirational lifestyle play for Google — and Goop will get some important rebranding from the arrangement too.
Goop has struggled with credibility and with accusations of spreading misinformation. Earlier this year, it was forced to relabel health and wellness advice content on its website with disclaimers like “For Your Enjoyment: There probably aren’t going to be peer-reviewed studies about this concept, but it’s fun, and there’s real merit in that,” and “Ancient Modality: This practice is nearly as old as time — many find value in it, even if modern-day research hasn’t caught up yet.”
In a bombastic and delightfully gossipy (the cigarette!) New York Times magazine profile of Gwyneth Paltrow published in July, she revealed that her company’s plan to launch its own magazine in partnership with Condé Nast (a Google partner) fell through because the publisher insisted Goop use a fact-checker. By partnering with Google, Goop has an opportunity to affiliate its brand with big data and proven fact, without actually validating any of its own claims.
In the Times profile, Paltrow also revealed that the company was worth $250 million, and thanked her haters for her success. Writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner explained:
The weirder Goop went, the more its readers rejoiced. And then, of course, the more Goop was criticized: by mainstream doctors with accusations of pseudoscience, by websites like Slate and Jezebel saying it was no longer ludicrous — no, now it was dangerous. And elsewhere people would wonder how Gwyneth Paltrow could try to solve our problems when her life seemed almost comically problem-free. But every time there was a negative story about her or her company, all that did was bring more people to the site — among them those who had similar kinds of questions and couldn’t find help in mainstream medicine.
Nobody understands the mechanics of this — a great search-engine optimization/clickbait feedback loop scam — better than Google. Google Search placement and Google Trend might be two of the least sexy but most important things any fledgling brand has to worry about. If anyone knows how great Goop is doing on that front, it’s the company that holds practically every internet user’s browsing data.
If Google wants to get seriously into luxury and wellness, nobody’s more tightly associated with those buzzwords than Goop. We don’t know the extent of Goop and Google’s partnership yet, but it makes perfect sense. “The minute the phrase ‘having it all’ lost favor among women, wellness came in to pick up the pieces,” Brodesser-Akner wrote. “Wellness was maybe a result of too much having it all, too much pursuit, too many boxes that we’d seen our exhausted mothers fall into bed without checking off.”
That explains the rise of Goop’s brand of aspirational wellness, but wellness as a concept also arrived because of too many email notifications, too many “active” or “away” status bubbles, and too many tech companies like Google that made every moment of our lives schedulable and therefore monetizable. A partnership between the two makes total sense business-wise — and for consumers, it’s a match made in a rosy, well-lit hell.

In this week’s edition of Toke and Travel, we’re heading to the city of angels: Los Angeles, California.
Birthplace of Hollywood and home to fabulous architecture and landscapes, Los Angeles is a creative melting pot with a diverse and bustling art, music and culinary scene. With so much to do, it’s no wonder nearly 4 million people choose to call the City of Angels home. So let’s put our walking shoes on and do L.A. like a local.
Lights, camera, action!
Rest Your Head
As you explore all that Los Angeles has to offer, you may encounter musicians passing mixtapes at Venice Beach or costumed sidewalk characters on Hollywood Boulevard, but what you won’t see is anyone smoking weed in public.
Sure, recreational marijuana is now legal in California, but public consumption remains illegal. California’s Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA) mandates that cannabis is consumed in a private space. Cannabis consumption in a business is prohibited unless the business has a commercial cannabis consumption license. This stipulation leaves out-of-state visitors hanging not high and dry after a cannabis purchase.
Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t have all the comforts of home. Search for lush and lavish L.A. homes on popular short-term rental apps for temporary lodging. While browsing, remember to review the filters and select “smoking allowed” to ensure you reserve a property that allows smoking, because nothing ruins a vacation faster than surprise fees and fines. Once you’ve narrowed your search to 420-friendly homes, book your dates and start your vacation countdown.
Get the Hookup
The City of Angels keeps the angels flying high with high-quality designer kush from TLC. Located on the edge of downtown Los Angeles, TLC is one of the 135 dispensaries permitted to remain in business after voters approved city ordinance Measure D in 2013. TLC is also home to Jungle Boys, one of the leading SoCal cannabis brands. The shelves are stocked with the name-brand flowers and concentrates in a variety of strains, including Strawberry Shortcake, Mimosa #14, and Gelato #33.
While you’re in town, check out TLC’s sister shop, Los Angeles Farmer (formerly AHPS). Both retail shops carry Jungle Boys products and welcome medical marijuana and recreational consumers age 21 and over.
Greenwolf, another popular Los Angeles dispensary, is located in the Los Feliz neighborhood. Greenwolf’s menu is flooded with Moxie, Raw Garden, and Nameless Genetics products.
Cruise down Melrose Avenue and re-up on fresh greens at Mary Jane’s Hollywood, a full integrated seed-to-patient dispensary that is open to medical marijuana patients and adult users.
Be Prepared
Eliminate your wait and skip the line when you pre-order your products on Weedmaps. At pickup, customers will need a state-issued ID or driver’s license to verify the name on the order.
Recreational cannabis consumers can possess up to 1 ounce, or 28.35 grams, of cannabis, or 8 grams of concentrated cannabis. Medical marijuana patients and caregivers can possess and transport up to 8 ounces of dried cannabis or concentrates, and up to six mature plants or 12 immature plants.
Purchases on recreational cannabis products are subject to a 15 percent cannabis excise tax, an 8 to 10 percent excise tax, and a 7.25 to 11 percent sales and use tax. Medical marijuana patients are subjected to a 15 percent cannabis excise tase and 8 to 10 percent city tax.
See the Sights
Venice Beach is a must-see destination for travelers who want to absorb the SoCal culture. The Venice Beach Boardwalk brings the bohemian spirit to the shore and offers many sights to see. Want to squeeze in a quick workout before flexing? Stop by the world-famous Muscle Beach and explore the outdoor gym, or slip on a pair of wheels and bounce from ramp to ramp at the skate park nearby.
If that’s not enough, the street performers will catch your attention with their acrobatic skills or maybe there’s a painter flipping his canvas while splashing paint. If you want to get geographically high, we recommend checking out the Hotel Erwin’s High Rooftop Lounge, a water-view rooftop lounge.
Malibu is a beach city that is home to some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities and equally dazzling hiking trails including the Grotto Trail and Escondido Falls. Both trails are great for hikers of all experience and deliver a rewarding waterfall view. Visitors can also sign up for wine tours, tandem flights for a birds’-eye view of the city, or simply spend time at the beach under the California sun.
Enjoy the City of Angels from the 69th and 70th floors of the US Bank Tower’s OUE Skyspace. Located in the city’s financial district, the skyscraper’s open-to-the-public portion is nearly 1,000 feet above Los Angeles and offers panoramic views of the city and occasional yoga classes. Visitors have the option to lounge and learn about the tower, which until the 2017 opening of the nearby Wilshire Grand Center was the tallest skyscraper in Los Angeles, or take a ride down the 45-foot, fully enclosed glass Skyslide. During the day, you’ll be able to see the freeways stretching to the ocean, use telescopes to zoom in on the Hollywood Hills and maybe wave to a helicopter pilot. At night, the horizon fills with an endless, and endlessly romantic, city of lights.
Experiences While Elevated
Inspired by the coffeeshops in Amsterdam, Wake and Bake is located in the NoHo Arts District in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of North Hollywood. The shop has created a unique experience that brings people together and integrates coffee into cannabis culture. Wake and Bake hosts events such as silent disco, comedy shows, theatrical plays, and events featuring some of the best musicians in the world. Wake and Bake customers may purchase a day pass, or sign up to be a gold member and receive discounts and exclusive offers. A portion of membership proceeds goes to the YMCA.
Visitors can maximize their California visit with an LA Hemp Tour that transports guests in a bud-friendly tour bus. A variety of packages focus on weed and wine, bud and beer, and private tours that allow travelers to create their own itinerary. Each tour offers a VIP dispensary experience and exclusive discounts on top cannabis products from well-established marijuana retail stores. The luxury-limo party bus has custom party seating, disco lights, Bluetooth connectivity, flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, and illuminated cup holders. Snacks and beverages are also included, as well as an LA Hemp Tours T-shirt.
Los Angeles is full of glitz, glitter, glam, and of course, greens. The city is densely populated, to say the least, and no matter where you turn, you’ll most likely spot attractions wedged between posh businesses or even catch a photo op with a famous celebrity. Be sure to bring sunscreen with your THC (you don’t want to burn up while burning up).
Do you have some favorite spots in LA to share with like-minded travelers? Share them in the comments below.
