PRESS ROOM: 100-year old legendary African-American debate coach awarded 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from NSDA
By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
The NAACP plans to highlight 110 years of civil rights history, and the current fight for voting rights, criminal justice reform, economic opportunity and education quality during its 110th national convention now happening in Detroit.
The five-day event which began on Saturday, July 20, will also include a session on the 2020 Census, a presidential roundtable, CEO Roundtable, and LGBTQ and legislative workshops.
“We are excited to announce the 110th annual convention in Detroit, my hometown,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson.
“For me, it is a homecoming and I will also be excited to announce our theme for this year which is, ‘When we Fight, We Win,’” Johnson said.
Winning is what the NAACP was built on – winning battles for racism, freedom, justice and equality.
The NAACP was formed in 1908 after a deadly race riot that featured anti-black violence and lynching erupted in Springfield, Illinois.
According to the storied organization’s website, a group of white liberals that included descendants of famous abolitionists Mary White Ovington and Oswald Garrison Villard; William English Walling, and Dr. Henry Moscowitz, all issued a call for a meeting to discuss racial justice.
About 60 people, seven of whom were African American, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and Mary Church Terrell, answered the call, which was released on the centennial of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln.
“Echoing the focus of Du Bois’ Niagara Movement for civil rights, which began in 1905, the NAACP aimed to secure for all people the rights guaranteed in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution, which promised an end to slavery, the equal protection of the law, and universal adult male suffrage, respectively.”
Accordingly, the NAACP’s mission remains to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of United States and eliminate race prejudice.
“The NAACP seeks to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes,” Johnson said.
The NAACP established its national office in New York City in 1910 and named a board of directors as well as a president, Moorfield Storey, a white constitutional lawyer and former president of the American Bar Association.
Other early members included Joel and Arthur Spingarn, Josephine Ruffin, Mary Talbert, Inez Milholland, Jane Addams, Florence Kelley, Sophonisba Breckinridge, John Haynes Holmes, Mary McLeod Bethune, George Henry White, Charles Edward Russell, John Dewey, William Dean Howells, Lillian Wald, Charles Darrow, Lincoln Steffens, Ray Stannard Baker, Fanny Garrison Villard, and Walter Sachs. Despite a foundational commitment to multiracial membership, Du Bois was the only African American among the organization’s original executives.
Du Bois was made director of publications and research, and in 1910 established the official journal of the NAACP, The Crisis.
By 1913, with a strong emphasis on local organizing, the NAACP had established branch offices in such cities as Boston, Baltimore, Kansas City, St. Louis, Washington, D.C., and Detroit.
NAACP membership grew rapidly, from around 9,000 in 1917 to around 90,000 in 1919, with more than 300 local branches.
Joel Spingarn, a professor of literature and one of the NAACP founders formulated much of the strategy that fostered much of the organization’s growth.
He was elected board chairman of the NAACP in 1915 and served as president from 1929-1939.
The NAACP would eventually fight battles against the Ku Klux Klan and other hate organizations.
The organization also became renowned in American Justice with Thurgood Marshall helping to prevail in the 1954’s Brown v. Board of Education, the decision that overturned Plessy.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, which was disproportionately disastrous for African Americans, the NAACP began to focus on economic justice.
Because of the advocacy of the NAACP, President Franklin D. Roosevelt agreed to open thousands of jobs to black workers when labor leader A. Philip Randolph, in collaboration with the NAACP, threatened a national March on Washington movement in 1941.
President Roosevelt also set up a Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) to ensure compliance.
The NAACP’s Washington, D.C., bureau, led by lobbyist Clarence M. Mitchell Jr., helped advance not only integration of the armed forces in 1948 but also passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1964, and 1968 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
NAACP Mississippi field secretary Medgar Evers and his wife Myrlie would become high-profile targets for pro-segregationist violence and terrorism.
In 1962, their home was fire bombed, and later Medgar was assassinated by a sniper in front of their residence. Violence also met black children attempting to enter previously segregated schools in Little Rock, Arkansas, and other southern cities.
The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s echoed the NAACP’s goals, but leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, felt that direct action was needed to obtain them.
Although the NAACP was criticized for working too rigidly within the system, prioritizing legislative and judicial solutions, the Association did provide legal representation and aid to members of other protest groups over a sustained period of time.
The NAACP even posted bail for hundreds of Freedom Riders in the ‘60s who had traveled to Mississippi to register black voters and challenge Jim Crow policies.
Led by Roy Wilkins, who succeeded Walter White as secretary in 1955, the NAACP collaborated with A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and other national organizations to plan the historic 1963 March on Washington.
The following year, the Association accomplished what seemed an insurmountable task: The Civil Rights Act of 1964.
“Much has changed since the creation of the NAACP 110 years ago, and as we highlight these achievements during this year’s convention, we cannot forget that we’re still tirelessly fighting against the hatred and bigotry that face communities of color in this country,” Johnson said.
“With new threats emerging daily and attacks on our democracy, the NAACP must be more steadfast and immovable than ever before to help create a social political atmosphere that works for all,” he said.
The NAACP provided all historical information for this report.

Petition to 'Save Tompkins Square asphalt!' closing in on 19,000 signatures
The petition opposing the city's plan to cover the concrete courtyard (aka TF) with synthetic turf in Tompkins Square Park has received overwhelming support in just one week.
As of this morning, nearly 19,000 people had signed their name to "Save Tompkins Square asphalt!"
As we reported last Tuesday, the city has plans — apparently only known to residents who may have attended a Community Board committee meeting in May — to cover the multipurpose courts in the northwest corner of Tompkins Square Park with synthetic turf, a move that surprised and upset a major user of that space since the 1980s — skateboarders.
"While this might look like some flat concrete to a lot of people, this place holds a really deep and sacred importance to thousands of skaters and young people who come together to use this park on a daily basis," East Village resident Adam Zhu, who started the petition, told NBC New York.
The turf project, happening at several area parks, is a result of the city's flood-protection plan that will close East River Park next March for 3.5-plus years. The city needs to find space for the sports teams and youth leagues who use the fields along East River Park.
Turfing the asphalt will also displace other groups here in the corner at Avenue A and 10th Street, including the 400 members of the BlackTop Street Hockey League who use the space on Sunday afternoons.
There is word of a meeting set for early this week between reps for the skateboarders and the Parks Department.
--
The story has also been picked up by Patch ... the Post ... and Fox 5.
You can find the petition here.

Jacobs Pickles
Diesen Unterschied schmeckt man.

Florida Governor Reveals That Russians Hacked Voter Databases During 2016 Elections
“We’re trying to figure out what the state knew at the time. Obviously, the previous administration and the head of FDLE did not have that information,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters. (Photo: Gage Skidmore, Wikimedia Commons)
By Lauren Victoria Burke, NNPA Newswire Contributor
On May 14, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that Russian hackers gained access to voter databases in two counties in the state before the 2016 presidential election. DeSantis added that the hackers didn’t manipulate any data and the results of the election were not changed. He provided no proof that was the case.
“I recently met with the FBI concerning the election issue mentioned in the Mueller report. Two Florida counties experienced intrusion into the supervisor of election networks. There was no manipulation,” DeSantis said.
The breach of Florida’s election system was first revealed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report two weeks ago. The issue of Russian interference in the 2016 election last month had been denied by many on the right but now for the first time has been publicly confirmed.
DeSantis signed an agreement with the FBI not to disclose the names of the counties in Florida that were hacked by the Russians. But, election officials in the breached counties are also aware of there was an intrusion. Though other Florida officials had not been made aware of the situation.
“I haven’t heard even a whisper,” about such a breach, said Paul Lux, president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections in an interview with National Public Radio in April.
“We’re trying to figure out what the state knew at the time. Obviously, the previous administration and the head of FDLE did not have that information,” DeSantis told reporters.
An ongoing investigation into Russian interference and the connections between Russian citizens and members of the Trump Administration have been the constant source of various theories around how Donald Trump won the the White House over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016. Clinton received over 3 million votes more than Trump but was defeated because her tally of electoral votes was less.
As President, Trump has taken no direct action to safeguard U.S. voting systems after Russian interference was disclosed.

Going Balls Deep at the 20th Annual Mr. Lower East Side Pageant [PHOTOS]
Photo: Eden Brower
Saturday night was of the utmost importance in the fashion world. But maybe you didn’t know it.
Bedlam bar on Avenue C served as runway for the always entertaining, and oft-cringeworthy, twentieth annual Mr. Lower East Side Pageant (returned from exile), where contestants squared off in various categories like the one-minute talent competition, a swimsuit competition, and evening wear.
With Reverend Jen hosting – she started the alternative fashion show back in 1999 – the pungent perfumes of sweat and body odor were prevalent. As was the display of cock-and-balls.
Johnny Bizarre with a hammer, Photo: Eden Brower
King of the night was Fritz, who was crowned Mr. Lower East Side. Other honorable mentions went to Mike Logan for Best Male Tits and Tommy D Naked Man for Best Nutsack.
Special thank you to Eden Brower for sharing these pictures.

The Abandoned Tracks of the Montauk Cutoff at Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City
Some New Yorkers still lament the loss of the High Line in its abandoned state but there are other disused railways still lying fallow in New York City. One such is the Montauk Cutoff, a railroad line built in the 1900s and located in Long Island City, Queens. Known these days as a haven for urban explorers, the Montauk Cutoff has an interesting history of prosperity and neglect.
The Montauk Cutoff was likely built in 1908 among a wave of other overpasses being constructed in industrial Queens. Called a “cutoff” because it bypassed the bustling city below, the Montauk Cutoff was used to get trains in and out of Sunnyside Yard. At only a third of a mile long, it was quite the popular line until the 1970s when freight traffic in Long Island City began to decrease. During the weekdays, the cutoff was also used to turn locomotives. There was no turntable in Long Island City and thus, the trains were gathered and reversed for an evening commute back. The 1990s ultimately saw the end of this practice too.
Woefully abandoned, the small section of tracks has since hosted its share of occupants. Homeless camps, cat shelters, and shanties were prolific until Hurricane Sandy flooded them out. At one point, the now defunct Sextantworks (aka Wanderlust Projects) organized an event on the Montauk Cutoff tracks (think speakeasy mixed with urban exploration). A guerrilla garden was also established in 2011, and eventually issued a lease by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The volunteer-run project, called Smiling Hogshead Ranch, continues to meet to this day to plant and run workshops.
Though the Montauk Cutoff has officially been decommissioned, the MTA wants to keep tabs on the property for potential future use. However, in 2015, the MTA requested ideas from the community for temporary solutions. A group called the Cutoff Coalition led the charge with a vision of urban architecture that expanded upon the Smiling Hogshead Ranch’s success. At the present, nothing has come to fruition but the most recent revitalization plan sees the Montauk Cutoff transforming into an elevated park. Meanwhile, the City of New York and Amtrak has launched a master planning process for the future of Sunnyside Yard, and any proposal will undoubtedly impact the Montauk Cutoff.
Slow progress means time to tiptoe along the overgrown tracks of the Montauk Cutoff. Check out the view over Queens or perhaps lend a hand to the folks of the Smiling Hogshead Ranch.
Next, check out how to tour the remnants of Penn Station. Get in touch with the author at freshcoffeestains.com.

The 1874 Acker, Merrill & Condit Stable -- 134-136 West 10th Street
At noon on April 16, 1873 the "Valuable Plot of Ground with buildings" at Nos. 134 and 136 West 10th Street was sold at auction. There was only one dwelling on the 40-foot wide property. It was a commodious 25-foot wide brick house which appears by the description (two story, attic and basement) to have been a Federal style structure. In the rear was a two-story brick stable.
The free-standing house with its grassy yard had been at one time home to a well-to-do family. That was in evidence when the furnishings were auctioned 12 days later. The listing included "Rich double and single Parlor Suits, Carpets, Mirrors, Paintings, Engravings, carved black walnut Bedsteads and Bureaus, best hair Mattresses," and such.
At the time Acker, Merrill & Condit Co. owned and operated several high-end grocery stores. The term "grocery" had little to do with the word we commonly use today. Acker, Merrill & Co. catered to the carriage trade and stocked a dizzying array of goods--wines, confectioneries, gourmet foods and delicacies, cigars, and personal items. Founded in 1820, its main competitor now was the equally well-known Park & Tilford. Nearly a year to the day after the furnishings of No. 136 West 10th Street were removed, Acker, Merrill & Co.'s architect, Charles Wright, filed plans for a three-story brick stable on the site. Before construction was completed later that year the plans were reworked to include a fourth floor. Wright's handsome Italianate stable was faced in red brick and trimmed in stone. The architect distinguished the openings with scalloped lintels with dropped ends and placed delicate brackets below their sills. The bracketed cornice upheld a triangular pediment which announced the construction date.
The symmetry of the design--upset only by the double-wide hay loft opening at the third floor--was carried on to the street level where two wide carriage bays and two doorways were in perfect balance.
The capacious facility housed Acker, Merrill & Condit Co.'s delivery trucks and horses. Life for the work animals was hard, occasionally requiring them be placed a discounted prices. On July 19, 1877, an advertisement appeared in The New York Herald that read "For Sale Cheap--Three horses. Apply at 134 West 10th st., New York."
Nearly 35 years after building the stable, Acker, Merrill & Co. sold it to Charles F. Hickey of Brooklyn. Or at least they attempted to. The firm gave Hickey a $30,000 three-year mortgage on the property--in the neighborhood of $825,000 today. A year before the term was up, Hickey renewed the entire amount.
Eventually, Acker, Merrill & Co. seems to have given up on Hickey and on December 27, 1918 The Sun reported that it leased the building to the Peerless Trucking Company. At the time motorized trucks were slowly replacing horse-driven drays on the streets of New York. By the summer of 1922 Peerless Trucking & Transfer Co. was ready for a total change-over. At "10 a.m. sharp" an auction was held in the 10th Street stable to liquidate the outdated equipment and the horses.
The auction announcement listed 27 "good work horses," 28 trucks of different types, 22 sets of single and double harnesses, 32 blankets and "all stable utensils." The auctioneers guaranteed "These horses are young and acclimated and used to all kinds of hard work. Anyone in need of a first-class work horse should not miss this opportunity."
The old stable continued life as a trucking depot and then as a garage by the late 1960's. Then, in 2006 it received a remarkable makeover. The ground floor was converted to a "community facility" while the upper floors became a total of seven apartments. Among the building's high-profile residents were actor Kiefer Sutherland.
Half of the street level space became home to the Village Preschool Center. According to its website the facility, for children between 2 to 5 years of age, offers daily French lessons, science, music, and "reading readiness" activities. "Our graduates are extremely prepared, academically and socially," the website says, "to move on to kindergarten."
The sympathetic remodeling and restoration of the 145-year old livery stable preserved an important component of the historic fabric of this charming section of the Village.

WARREN STREET CROOK
March 2019 marks Forgotten New York’s 20th anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, I’ve re-scanned about 150 key images from the early days of FNY from 35MM prints. In the early days, when people including me were accessing FNY with dial-up modems, I had to save photos really small — in some cases, just 4″ across. I couldn’t find all those early photos — I think I foolishly discarded some along the way — but all month, and into the spring, I’ll be picking out some and showing the newly scanned versions.
In 1999 I was stumbling around in lower Manhattan, in that little-defined area south of Independence Plaza and north of the northern edge of the World Trade Center plaza at Vesey Street, when I happened upon a parking lot facing Warren Street along with a dead-end stub of Washington Street complete with Belgian blocks, with the scene completed by the presence of a hybrid Bishop Crook lamppost combining a Type 24 BC mast and a Type 6 BC base, the type usually employed on narrower streets. This one even had an old-style fire alarm lamp sconce.
By the mid-2000s, this block was finally developed, with 100 Greenwich Street going up on the plot, erasing this small piece of Washington. However, the bishop crook was landmarked and could not be scrapped. What could the Department of Transportation do? They removed the post, gave it a paint job and in an unusual maneuver, placed a large white reflector globe in place of the small orange fire alarm indicator. The post was relocated to the north side of Warren Street, where it stands today.
Check out the ForgottenBook, take a look at the gift shop, and as always, “comment…as you see fit.”

Residents: Bike Lane on Grand Street Needs to Be Improved — Not Removed
They came to complain about the unfinished Grand Street protected bike lane — but they mostly want it to be improved, not removed.
Cyclists and business owners alike told Community Board 1 on Monday that the current state of the hastily installed bike lane — which wasn’t fully implemented in advance of the now-scrubbed L-train shutdown — is dangerous for cyclists and disruptive to business along the corridor, due to design flaws in the lane and a lack of enforcement against cars parked in it.
“The implementation of the bike lane is awful,” said Kyle Yakal-Kremski, sporting a neck brace at the meeting. “I’m wearing this neck brace because of it.”
Yakal-Kremski says he was cycling in the lane when he hit an uneven utility cover and went flying.
“I hope something gets fixed because folks are going to get hurt on bikes,” he said. “Right now it’s almost worse than it was before.”
Nick Gorski, a cyclist from Ridgewood who was hit by a car on Grand Street in 2016, said the half-finished state of the bike lane was causing chaos, and that an increase in illegal parking enforcement would help make conditions safer.
“It’s not fully implemented yet and that is adding to the congestion and craziness because people are double-parking,” Gorski said. “If we had that extra level of enforcement and tried to get everybody on board with what we are seeing, I think a lot of these issues would be cleared up.”
Four people have been killed by cars on Grand Street over the past four years along the stretch in question, including cyclist Matthew von Ohlen in 2016, city statistics show. The lanes were installed in part to ease the pain of the L-train shutdown, but many safe streets advocates see the redesign as necessary regardless.
Local business owners present at the meeting were not uniformly opposed to the bike lanes, but thought they needed to be tweaked if they were to remain despite the cancelled shutdown. Many business owners in the city believe reduced street parking will lead to fewer customers, but members of this camp were largely absent from the Jan. 28 meeting. Gothamist recently detailed the anxieties of two anti-bike-lane business owners on Grand Street, and similar voices have been heard among landowners in Greenwich Village, where bikes lanes on 12th and 13th streets have been under fire.
Erik Pye, owner of Sunshine Glass, said he thinks the bike lane should be moved to a quieter residential street and made parking protected due to the dangers posed by delivery trucks on Grand Street. Pye said an employee of his was almost killed on Grand Street because he had to bike around an illegally parked truck.
Alexis Rodriguez, an organizer for Council Member Antonio Reynoso said he was open to hearing feedback from the business community and implementing loading zones, but that his office and the Department of Transportation were committed to putting the safety of pedestrians over cars and parking.
“Bikes over cars,” Rodriguez said.

Weekend Plans: We were supposed to be on our way to Nantucket this weekend to stay at the house where we'll be getting married, but we had to change plans because of the weather. We were worried the ferries wouldn't be running in the high winds and rain, so we're trying to find another weekend that works. Now I'm free as a bird and I'm hoping to see A Star Is Born tonight or sometime this weekend! We're also going to be finalizing our Save the Date cards this weekend too!
NYC Life: Just another week of working out; nothing too crazy. BUT I did have a fun idea of hosting a workout class (either Barre3 or 305) in the city and would LOVE your feedback if you'd be interested in doing it. It would only be for those in or close to NYC. Youth climate strikes take place across New York City - Chalkbeat New York
Headlines

School children hold signs during a Youth Climate Strike in front of the New York Headquarters of the United Nations on March 15, 2019.
Students from across New York City walked out of classes and marched for action on climate change Friday, joining young people across the world as part of the youth climate strikes.
Multiple protests were held across the city, including outside of City Hall, the Bronx High School For Science, Columbus Circle, and elsewhere. The young New Yorkers joined hundreds of thousands of students around the world demonstrating in the spirit of 16-year-old Greta Thunberg’s weekly protests in Sweden.
While public school officials said they encourage activism, students who skipped classes Friday were marked absent. This differs from city policy during walkouts against guns last year, when the education department said students would only receive a notation on their attendance records only if they didn’t return to class afterward the protests.
“We encourage our students to raise their voices on issues that matter to them, and we also expect our students to be in attendance during the school day,” said Education Department spokeswoman Miranda Barbot.
Here are some tweets reflecting the students’ anger and outrage.

Beijing Express pulls into 3rd Avenue after Gala's quick exit
The signage/brandage arrived for Beijing Express at 92 Third Ave. late last week (H/T EVG reader Laura!) ...
The quick-serve restaurant takes the place of the quickly departed Gala BBQ, which just opened in September here between 12th Street and 13th Street.
Gala, whose questionnaire on file at CB3 described the place as a "high-end Chinese restaurant," had tough competition, sandwiched in a space between the popular Han Dynasty and Hunan Bistro. I don't know if the owners of Beijing Express were also involved with Gala.
In any event, the interior shows some work left to do before opening...
