“Craving” (2023)
Wednesday, March 8th, 2023 (23:32) JEFELEN ALMOST missed making this announcement, owing to personal life struggles...
It was my pleasure to have served as Executive Producer on Jason Horton's horror/thriller feature, "Craving" (in conjunction with 50 Caliber Productions™, and in association with World One TV™ and Sky Island Storytelling), which sees release as of today!
http://www.cravingmovie.com
After a drug deal goes south, four desperate heroin addicts barricade themselves in a country bar as a sinister group of masked individuals gather outside. Besieged, and with the manifest effects of withdrawal beginning to set in, further embroiling their impromptu hostage situation, a dark secret one of them is harbouring threatens to surface, raising with it the very real potential to destroy them all! Now they must all work together in order to escape, or else face the monster within...
Featuring disturbing practical prosthetic effects by BRAVO F.X.™. Distribution is being handled by Indie Rights Movies™. Available now to rent or buy through the following electronic vendors:
Prime Video™: http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0B8XQHPFK
Google Play™: http://play.google.com/store/movies/details/Craving?gl=US...
YouTube™: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK-WDKamSYY
To coincide with the general release of the movie, a red carpet world première shall also be staged on this occasion, courtesy of Laemmle Theatres, to take place at NoHo 7 (located at 5240 Lankershim Boulevard, North Hollywood, California) as part of their 'One Fright Only' programme (sponsored by FirstGlance Film Fests).
http://www.laemmle.com/film/craving
Doors are scheduled to open at 7:30pm PST, on Wednesday, March 8th. It's late notice, I confess, but tickets do remain available, albeit in limited supply: http://41820.formovietickets.com:2235/T.ASP?WCI=bt...
In addition to the debut screening, a live Q&A session shall follow, hosted by Gigi Gustin, and featuring writer/director J. Horton, producers Ashley & Kevin, along with effects artist Robert Bravo. If you're able to make it (at such short notice), then you won't want to miss this...

BREAK!!**
Thursday, March 16th, 2023 (13:31) I'd have shared these sooner, being that it's been a full week already, but reportedly The Academy™ staging it's award ceremony within days of the "Craving" première has lead to delays in what Getty Images™ has been able to process. Be that as it may, here's a (somewhat belated) glimpse into the red carpet comings and goings of that evening:
http://www.gettyimages.com.au/search/2/image...
At the time of writing, there's but a mere nineteen images on display, despite it having been a sold out capacity crowd on the night... however this number will likely increase over time, I suspect.

Tuesday, March 28th, 2023 (23:32) Generally speaking, I don't make a habit of sharing material of this specific nature, as this isn't content I typically go in for, personally, but I do feel that "Craving" ought to be receiving more attention than I've been able to muster thus far, so here's a new review trailer, featuring pull quotes provided by the likes of The Independent Critic, Film Threat, PopHorror, Voices from the Balcony, Influx Magazine (& Entertainment News), along with those of IndyRed, for your considered attention:
http://www.youtube.com/embed/-4ApMnk6tOw?vq=hd720&rel=0...
Seeing what the critics have had to say in response to this J. Horton release, maybe take a look and judge for yourself.

Sunday, September 24th, 2023 (13:31) So, an intriguing (if not amusingly non sequitur) promotional campaign has been run over the past couple of months (that I'm only just now becoming privy to, for one reason or another), which I shall accordingly mirror serially in the comments below over the next week or so, in the interest of attracting "Craving" a little further attention here -- news to follow...
Sunday, October 1st, 2023 (23:32) The question needs to be asked: in the modern climate of agenda-driven editorials and politically-motivated misinformation, have YOU found yourself craving news with a little more... bite? Well then, look no further -- #CravingNews is now a thing (apparently!), and it's delivering all the hard-hitting facts you've been hungering for:
Sunday, October 8th, 2023 (13:31) With abominable headlines like this, one naturally feels compelled to ask: is it his FOOT that this philandering cryptid should be named after...? #CravingNews
Sunday, October 22nd, 2023 (13:31) Batboy couldn't possibly be wrong! #CravingNews
Sunday, October 22nd, 2023 (13:31) I've heard tell that one has to have their wits about them when frequenting a Cracker Barrel™, m'yes... #CravingNews
Monday, October 30th, 2023 (23:32) An honest peak behind the curtain: I unwittingly attached the wrong image to that previous entry for a while there, prematurely showcasing this article -- fixed now. I then went and FORGOT to update yesterday as planned -- so that which was initially presented seven days early is now being published a day late! Be that as it may, while I might have missed my deadline here, you sure wouldn't want to miss out on those highly sought-after Taylor Swift concert tickets... #CravingNews
Sunday, November 5th, 2023 (23:32) And to think, certain exponents are still harping on about the E-MAILS of Hillary Clinton...! #CravingNews
Sunday, November 12th, 2023 (13:31) Okay, so the previous edition of #CravingNews may have admittedly contained minor spelling errors... but now, thanks to the futuristic wonders of modern technology, such egregious misprints are most assuredly a thing of the past (plus, the truth about Mike Pence revealed...).
Sunday, November 19th, 2023 (23:32) Forget what you may or may not have read about Shrimp Basket™ and/or Airbnb™, #CravingNews has the real scoop, and it ought to be music to everyone's ears -- "Craving" is making noise on a certain FOX™-owned over-the-top content platform...!
#TrustUs #WeDoOurOwnResearch #SeeBelow
Tuesday, October 31st, 2023 (23:32) It may have become apparent through several of those satirical #CravingNews headlines that "Craving" is actually now available (for FREE!) on the Tubi™ ad-supported streaming service -- you can actively see for yourself right here:
http://www.tubitv.com/movies/100001990
Being that it's now October 31st, and therefore Halloween (wOoOoOoOoOh!), why not cap off the #Spooktober season by giving this a look? Of course, in the event that you enjoy the presentation, please do consider paying to rent or purchase the movie through one of the aforementioned outlets, so as to help ensure the production of future projects of this ilk. #SupportIndependentCinema
Tuesday, December 12th, 2023 (13:31) Some of you who have been paying attention over the past nine months will have noticed that the video thumbnail featured at the outset of this running presentation has since changed -- this has been updated to better market the physical distribution of "Craving", which is now commercially available on DVD and blu-ray through the following merchant outlets: Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ4C2QMN http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ4GC4WL Walmart™: http://www.walmart.com/ip/5054134896 http://www.walmart.com/ip/5096250790 Best Buy™: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/36099389.p?skuId=360... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/36099316.p?skuId=360... Merchbar™: http://www.merchbar.com/rock.../craving-rock/cravin... http://www.merchbar.com/rock.../craving-rock/cravin... So if you've streamed the movie to your satisfaction, now's your opportunity to own a copy of your own for prosperity, which can only been seen as something to smile about!
Thursday, March 14th, 2024 (23:32) 2024 UPDATE: I've been meaning to share this for some time, in all honesty, because I'm genuinely impressed with the outcome... and I think you will be too! While "Craving" primarily employs traditional practical effects to achieve the disturbingly tangible sensibilities of its visuals, digital effects were still used sparingly in order to enhance what was captured in-camera, most notably during the flashback sequences. For these, in particular, emerging software applications were utelised in order to de-age our actors, as showcased here by the industrious Brook Hubbs:
http://www.facebook.com/214902598/videos/1330317184494496
It's no secret that I'm not a fan of the technology -- AT ALL -- but even so, when it's applied appropriately, the results really can speak volumes for themselves. Given the modest budget we had to work with for this movie, the augmented footage is remarkably convincing, I feel, and truly enhances the overall presentation, selling those sequences in ways that probably wouldn't have worked otherwise. I'm not ashamed to say that there's a degree of bona fide pride that comes with putting out vision of this respectable quality.

North Hollywood, LA (No. 2)
El Portal Theatre is a historic landmark in the San Fernando Valley located in the heart of North Hollywood just minutes from Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, Disney, ABC, CBS-Radford and NBC. The theatre, originally built as a vaudeville house in 1926, sits across from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Art Institute of California - Hollywood, and the new Laemmle 7 Screen Theaters. The art deco marquee is visible to thousands of cars that travel on Lankershim Boulevard daily. In the mid 2000’s the long awaited redevelopment of North Hollywood came to fruition with the grand openings of restaurants, upscale shops and a charming, urbanesque environment.
Since its first opening in 1926 -- first for Vaudeville, then Silent Movies, and then Academy Award winning films, as the primo movie house in the valley -- the theatre has weathered the Jazz Age, the Depression, 4 wars, and finally the great earthquake of 1994.
After the earthquake the El Portal was meticulously rebuilt in the late 1990s and opened in January of 2000 by the Actors Alley Acting company in partnership with the building owners Bernard and Judy Kaufman and Gary and Shari Goodgame. The once 1400-seat movie palace now houses three theatres -- the 42-seat Studio Theatre (the permanent home of Stuart Roger's Theatre Tribe); the 99-seat Monroe Forum Theatre: and the 360-seat Debbie Reynolds MainStage -- along with the Judith Kaufman Art Gallery, featuring many of Los Angeles' top visual artists.
Source
Architect: Lewis A. Smith designed the building. Richard McCann was the architect for the renovation into a legit venue. The theatre reopened in January 2000. Seating: 1,346 originally, all on one level. Currently the building houses 3 theatres: the 354 seat Mainstage Theatre, the 95 seat Forum Theatre and the 42 seat Studio Theatre. Stage specifications: The main theatre has an orchestra pit that'll hold 19 and utilizes the 1926 proscenium and stagehouse. The 17 line counterweight system operates at stage level stage right. See the mainstage page on the theatre's website for some additional tech information. History: The theatre ran vaudeville shows along with films until the talkies came along. The house got a makeover in the late 1940s. Drapes and neo-baroque "Skouras-style" swirls were installed obliterating the original decorative work on the interior. Fox West Coast and its successor companies, National General and Mann, operated the theatre for decades. Prior to closing in the 90s, it had a run as an independent venue screening Spanish language films. The 1994 Northridge earthquake resulted in extensive damage including the cave-in of the auditorium ceiling. The Actors Alley acquired the building in 1996 and did a seismic retrofit and interior remodeling. The City of Los Angeles has the building on its list of Cultural Historic Landmarks. Status: Renovated and operating as a performing arts center since 2000. It's the anchor of the NoHo Arts District in North Hollywood. While the boxoffice, entry area and facade are of historical interest, little of the original decor remains in the auditorium space except the proscenium and faux-stone side walls.

The Meeting is a powerful provocative well written new play written by Jeff Stetson and directed by industry veteran Bill Cobbs now playing for a short 2 week run at "The Flex" located in Noho's Theatre 68. The very timely dramatic 75 minute piece imagines an intriguing secret meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in Malcolm X's Harlem hotel room. The Meeting stars Bechir Sylvain as Malcolm X and Ethan Henry as Martin Luther King - both lead actors give excellent performances in their portrayals of the political icons as does Justin Chu Chary in his supporting role as Malcolm X's dedicated bodyguard Rashad. The play is an excellent moving history lesson with many riveting, thought provoking and moving moments between the two visionary leaders, both husbands and fathers with dramatically diametric beliefs. While Dr. King the peace lover believed in "we shall over come", Malcolm X the revolutionary believed in "we shall come over". For tickets visit www.malcolmmeetsmartin.com - a portion of the sales will go to support a worthy cause www.BrownSugarRehab.org which helps to educate and spread awareness about colon cancer. Thank you to Sandra Kuker PR for the invitation to this engrossing play.

Meet the Cast of Shrew: Jill Penfold as Vincentio
Please introduce yourself! Where do you hail from? Who are you playing in Shrew?
Hey everyone! My name is Jill Penfold. I hail from the U.K. Essex to be precise. I have been in L.A for almost 11 years..yikes! and I love it. Nothing beats a blue sky. I am proud to play Vincentio and Curtis and Baptista's flamboyant servant.
Give us a quick summary of the play from your character's point of view!
As Vincentio, this is a tale of finding out what the heck my son (Lucentio) has been up to while away from home. Only to find out he's gone and got himself married...and used some trickery along the way. The little so 'n' so.
Tell us a bit about your history with Shakespeare.
I was first introduced to Shakespeare when I auditioned for Lady Macbeth in 2004. I landed the role of Macbeth. I then toured for 3 months around the UK and had a blast. During my theatre days in the UK I worked with different theatre companies .... I especially love touring.
This production of Shrew is gender-reversed. How do you feel about it?
As I've already played a gender neutral Macbeth, this is amazing. It's a very current and fresh perspective on how society plays a huge role in how one conducts oneself in public and how we conform to the norm without question. I love seeing the women in the play hold themselves in a dominate role.
What's your favorite quote (or two) from the play?
By this reckoning, he is more SHREW than she.
Pretty much sums it all up. Well done Curtis!!
Finally, where can people find out more about you and what you're up to?
You can all find me on IG www.instagram.com/jillpenfold or contact details are on my website www.jillpenfold.com.
The Taming of the Shrew opens Saturday, April 20 in NoHo. Tickets HERE!

The San Fernando Valley might be known for being the archetypal Southern California suburb, for a notable early 1980s teenage female linguistic dialect, and yes, uh, pr0n, but if you love and appreciate your local history as much as The Militant does, you'll know that it's a place that has changed over time, from agricultural farmland to suburban wonderland, to the modern quasi-urban districts that are currently springing up on both ends of the 818 along the 101. Now, The Militant doesn't get over to the other side of the hill that much, but when it does, it actually matters.
This past weekend, one of his operatives totally wanted to go to the Valley Relics Museum, a relatively new (opened 2013) exhibition of SFV nostalgia, most of which is the personal collection of Burbank native and North Hollywood resident Tommy Gelinas, who started exhibiting his collection over a decade ago in his NoHo art studio. Gelinas has also been responsible to salvaging and maintaining several iconic signs and artifacts from across the Valley (and a little beyond) after their original public purpose was shut down forever.
After a quick Saturday morning trip up the 101 to the 170 to the 5 to the 118, we arrived at a quiet industrial park nestled between Topanga Canyon Blvd and the Metro Orange Line (yes, this place is totally transit-accessible), and through the doors is some 4300 square feet of space jam-packed with SFV and general Southern California nostalgia. Where to start?
The Valley Relics Museum's Busch Gardens collection! The Militant loved this aerial view which shows the old theme park's exact location near Roscoe and Woodley. The park was replaced by an expanded Budweiser plant, and only the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks near Woodley remains.
The first room has some photos and memorabilia of various SFV institutions, from the aerospace industry (Lockheed and Rocketdyne called the Valley home) to ground-based transportation such as the Pacific Electric and the RTD. An adjoining room has behind-glass knicknack displays featuring such sights as the old Busch Gardens theme park in Van Nuys and some 1984 Olympic memorabilia (including not only an Olympic torch, but an accompanying manual book).
The Western memorabilia room, including several Nudie's Rodeo Tailors store artifacts, curated by Julie Ann Ream.
Another room is packed with movie and TV Western memorabilia (including remnants of the iconic North Hollywood Western apparel store Nudie's Rodeo Tailors), curated by Julie Ann Ream, whose grandfather, Taylor "Cactus Mack" McPeters was an actor in several Hollywood Westerns, who worked alongside such icons as Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and John Wayne. Preserving the artifacts of her grandfather, her other Western actor relatives and their peers has become her personal passion, and on most days Ream is on hand to talk about her collection and her Western family members' stories.
The main exhibit room contains antique iconic store restaurant signage and a collection of classic BMX bikes (an SFV invention)!
The rest of the museum is the main exhibit room, which encompasses over 2/3rds of the total space. Front and center is Gelinas' collection of classic '70s-era bicycle motocross (BMX) bikes, which originated in The Valley. The characteristic rigid frame was invented by Gary Littlejohn in North Hollywood and the open suburban spaces of the SFV allowed for large BMX dirt tracks to be built. Futhermore, BMX manufacturers like Mongoose, Redline, Champion and Robinson were all based here in The Valley.
Some relics from The Palomino, including a ticket stub from a 1979 Elvis Costello concert there!
The room also contains a large collection of now-gone store and restaurant signage, several of which are neon like the original sign from North Hollywood's Palomino nightclub (which featured now-legendary country and rock music acts from 1949 to 1995) and more conventional signage, such as the original Googie-style Henry's Tacos sign from Studio City.
A 1958 newsstand ad insert for the old Los Angeles Mirror (the old afternoon paper that eventually merged with the Los Angeles Times), touting the SFV as, "L.A.'s Happiest Half-Million" (that population has since grown by over 3 1/2 times).
The room also contains many signs familiar to those from, yet not unique to the Valley per se, such as a Pioneer Chicken revolving sign saved from the Olympic Blvd. location, '70s and '80s-era Jack In The Box (the chain originated in San Diego) signage, which also includes the old-school drive-thru clown speaker (even earlier than the type that was blown up in the infamous 1980 commercial) as well as the incandescent Tiffany Theatre sign rescued from its now-demolished West Hollywood location.
A few iconic Valley trios also make their presence here: Statues of Alvin, Simon and Theodore of The Chipmunks fame (born in Van Nuys), and Yakko, Wakko and Dot from The WB's Animaniacs (who, of course, lived in the studio's water tower in Burbank).
Exit Through The Gift Shop: Do buy some of Valley Relics Museum's t-shirts of classic now-gone Southern California businesses. Because you will look so awesome rocking that Pup'N Taco shirt!
Not only can you see some Valley relics, but you can wear them as well. The mini gift shop by the entrance sells shirts of now-gone So Cal institutions like Pup'N Taco, Malibu Grand Prix, Fedco, Zody's, Muntz TV, Saugus Speedway and legendary rock stations KMET and KNAC, among others. The sales of the shirts support the museum, so be generous! The collection does not explore the comprehensive history of The Valley; aside from an 1865 letter penned by Issac N. Van Nuys himself, much of the Valley Relics at this museum cater to the collective memories of Baby Boomers and Generation-Xers spanning the second half of the 20th century. So there are hardly any relics from the SFV's agricultural era. But still, Gelinas and the rest of the folks that run the museum must be given massive props for preserving the relatively recent history of The Valley. The staff have mentioned that some patrons have brought parents or grandparents who suffer from Alzheimer's Disease into the museum, and the sight of familiar memories from the exhibits instantly woke up something inside of them.
Yes, History can be that powerful, folks.
Both fortunately and unfortunately, the place isn't that big. Fortunately, you can enjoy the place in under two hours, and unfortunately, you can only enjoy the place in under two hours. But apparently there's more collection that they don't have the space for. The museum is planning to move into larger digs sometime in 2018, with one potential location being an old airplane hangar at Van Nuys Airport, but the museum has also explored even a Santa Clarita Valley location (Blasphemy!).
The Valley Relics Museum is transit-accessible! It's just two blocks south of the Metro Orange Line and Metrolink Chatsworth Station (something that didn't really exist during the RTD era...
Yes, this MA blog post is probably some four years late, and some of you might have already been here already, but a museum open only 50 or so times a year, coupled with a busy Militant schedule can cause that. But better late than never. And hey, The Militant is actually blogging about something other than an Epic CicLAvia Tour. That in itself is something to celebrate! Woo-hoo!
But if you haven't been here before, and especially if you're an SFV native or grew up in the 818, make sure to pay a visit to the museum this Saturday (those t-shirts make great presents, BTW), or at least add it to your New Year's Resolution list for 2018, before they move into their new location. And then visit them again when they have more stuff to display!
Valley Relics Museum, 21630 Marilla St, Chatsworth. Open Saturdays only, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free admission (but do kick them at least a few bucks to keep their nonprofit operation open). Accessible via (M) Orange Line and Metrolink (Chatsworth Station) - bike or walk two blocks south along the Orange Line bike path.
