Canning and Noel Purcell, briefly back in Sydney from Tokyo where he headed Westpac's office, strove to maintain a degree of calm in Conroy's outer office while Metcalfe and Williams helped Canning compose a press release based on words advised by the board. It was a brief announcement:

The chairman of Westpac Banking Corporation, Mr John Uhrig, announced today that the managing director, Mr Frank Conroy, had resigned.

This followed discussion by board members of the need for the leader of the bank's change program to be someone who comes fresh to the task.

A new chief executive will be appointed from outside the bank. Mr Uhrig said the board anticipates that will be achieved prior to the annual general meeting.

Pending a new appointment, Mr Uhrig will act as executive chairman on an interim basis.

In November, Allison Riggs (D) won election to the North Carolina Supreme Court. The race was extremely close. The initial count had Riggs ahead of her opponent Jefferson Griffin (R) by 623 votes out of the 5.5 million votes cast. Because of the small margin, Griffin requested a machine recount of all ballots cast, which put Riggs ahead with a lead of 734 votes. Griffin then requested a second partial hand recount, which saw Riggs’ lead increase by another 14 votes. But even after multiple recounts, Griffin still refused to concede. Republicans have now spent over five months attempting to overthrow the election, claiming that Riggs only won because of votes cast by ineligible voters. President Donald Trump did not contest the 2024 election because he won. But Republicans have adopted Trump’s playbook of attributing any loss to election fraud. Since the recounts, Griffin has been attempting to get over 60,000 ballots thrown out, claiming that many of them are invalid. Most of the challenges are to ballots cast by voters whose registration form did not include a driver’s license or Social Security number. Griffin is also challenging the eligibility of military voters and voters who live overseas. Griffin originally filed legal challenges against the 60,000 ballots with the State Board of Elections. The Board, which has a Democratic majority, rejected Griffin’s claims. In February, a trial court also rejected Griffin’s case. Griffin then appealed the ruling. On Friday, a panel of the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled in Griffin’s favor, deciding that the 60,000 ballots must be recounted and verified. The ruling states that all 60,000 people must be notified and given 15 business days to provide proof of identity, or their vote will be thrown out. The court also ruled to throw out ballots cast by North Carolina voters abroad who have never lived in the state, despite a state law passed in 2011 that gives them the right to vote. These voters often include children of military members stationed abroad or missionaries, the New York Times reported. Griffin is attempting to disenfranchise tens of thousands of people without showing that any of these voters are ineligible. “[T]he Court of Appeals’ ruling is destined to disenfranchise thousands of North Carolinians, denying them due process and equal protection under North Carolina law,” Riggs’ lawyers wrote in a filing seeking a stay in the decision.

The case will now be appealed to the North Carolina Supreme Court, where Riggs should already be months into her first full term. Without Riggs, who will recuse herself, Republicans hold a 5-1 majority on the court. On Monday, the state Supreme Court temporarily stayed the Court of Appeals’ ruling to consider Riggs' appeal.

Changing the rules after the game is over

There are several legal issues with Griffin’s argument. One major problem is that if Republicans thought the registration process was legally flawed, it should have been challenged before the election. Before the November election, a similar effort to remove voters’ eligibility was rejected by a federal judge appointed by Trump. Nevertheless, Griffin is recycling the same arguments after the election in an attempt to overturn the results. This violates a federal election doctrine known as the Purcell principle, which states that courts should not alter the rules of the election directly before, during, or after an election. Court of Appeals Judge Toby Hampson (D) quoted Purcell v. Gonzalez in his dissent Friday. “The Purcell principle and other equitable principles demand we do not change the rules of an election midstream or after votes are tallied to disenfranchise qualified North Carolina voters,” Hampson wrote.

Disenfranchising eligible voters

Most of the votes Griffin is challenging are being called into question because the voter registration does not include a driver's license or Social Security number, which has been included on North Carolina voter registrations since 2002. But, as the dissenting opinion issued by the North Carolina appeals court points out, a voter registration lacking a driver's license or Social Security number does not mean that the voter did not provide one. In North Carolina, if a county elections board cannot validate a driver’s license or Social Security number — which can occur if a clerk enters the number incorrectly, or if there is a discrepancy between maiden and married last names or hyphenated last names — then the number provided by the voter will not be saved as a part of the voter registration. None of the voters were told there was anything missing from their voter registration form. They received confirmation that they were registered to vote and were provided a ballot. Further, Hampson pointed out several cases where North Carolina courts had previously ruled that ensuring complete and accurate voter registration was the responsibility of county election boards and that voters could not be disenfranchised due to errors by the board. Riggs has also argued that throwing out ballots solely because of a missing driver’s license or Social Security number is a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which states that public officials cannot “deny the right of any individual to vote in any election because of an error or omission on any record or paper relating to any application, registration, or other act requisite to voting, if such error or omission is not material in determining whether such individual is qualified under State law to vote in such election.”

5 months later, there is still uncertainty over who will occupy a Supreme Court seat in North Carolina between the rightful winner in Allison Riggs (D) and the loser is pulling a Donald Trump in trying to steal it in Jefferson Griffin (R).

Juzgado de Familia resuelve a favor de afectada en caso de Gas Zeta y prohíbe desalojo de la empresa

La Sala Primera de la Corte Suprema de Justicia resolvió la tarde de este lunes a favor de Evangelina López Guzmán en el proceso divorcio que ella mantiene con Miguel Zaragoza, caso que ha afectado el suministro de gas en el país, por la partición de la empresa Gas Zeta.

De esta manera ratifica lo dispuesto por la Corte del Distrito del Condado de Harris, en Texas (EE. UU.), en la cual la sentencia protegió los derechos patrimoniales de López Guzmán.

Se rechaza la gestión de nulidad de todo lo actuado que pretende el señor Miguel Monge Alonso (representado por su abogado César Gómez Montoya), en su condición de apoderado especial de Cilindros para Gas S.A.”, se lee en el texto enviado por la Sala I.

Así las cosas, queda sin efecto el desalojo administrativo ordenado hace 10 días ordenado en las distintas plantas de Zeta en el país.

La única forma de arreglar esta distorsión de las órdenes dictadas por la Sala Primera es dejando sin efecto el desalojo administrativo dispuesto por el Ministerio de Seguridad el 15 de abril pasado.

“Por lo que, ante el desalojo ejecutado, contraviniendo las órdenes de la Sala Primera, ahora sí se hace necesario visto lo acontecido últimamente disponer que las cosas permanezcan en cuanto a las personas que en la práctica se ocupan de dirigir la empresa, sea por ahora Noel Bustillos en el mismo estado que tenía al veintidós de abril de dos mil quince”, termina el texto de la Sala.

Esta sentencia normaliza de alguna forma la situación de cientos de trabajadores de Zeta, quienes se han mantenido a la expectativa de lo que la Corte resuelva en este caso.

Las autoridades de la Corte manifestaron, también, que velaran para que las medidas se cumplan para evitar el desabastecimiento de gas, siendo, como es, un servicio de primera necesidad.

No matter how fine the music, say Bach's Mass in B minor, a poor performance will leave the listener wondering where the "greatness" went.  So the recommendations below represent a merging of both: All of the compositions are among the very best sacred music ever written, but the recorded performances succeed in communicating their extraordinary beauty.  

“I also dithered over whether or not to make a list of "liturgical" music, or "mass settings," or "requiems." Each of these would make interesting lists, but I chose the broader "sacred music" with the hope that this list might be of interest to a wider spectrum of people. Composers are not limited to any denomination -- some are known to have been non-believers -- although the music belongs to the Christian tradition.  

“I've also decided to limit my choices to recordings that are presently available on CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, or digital downloads.  I don't expect those who are curious about a particular title to start hunting down LPs, especially since these vinyl recordings are suddenly in great demand and prices are rising.

Before I began my long association with Davy Jones, I was already a fan of Mike Nesmith’s “cosmic country” and multi-genre/media work. In 1979 I was working in a San Francisco used record store, an outpost for noting trends. After years of The Monkees not being on my radar, I saw a revival of interest in them due to the HEAD film circulating on the “art movie” circuit, The Sex Pistols covering “Steppin’ Stone,” and a New Wave gestalt that celebrated the Pre-Fab 4 for their garage band template. I reappraised their records and re-discovered Nez’s solo work, which inspired me and influenced my songwriting. Years later I added Nez’s “Silver Moon” to my solo set, which caught Davy’s attention and we sang it live a couple of times. That was my “talking point” when, in 1996, I finally met Nez during the JUSTUS sessions in Nashville—at which all 4 of juggled percussion instruments around the studio like rock’n’roll Marx Brothers.

My relationship with Davy began in 1992. I was working in a recording studio in central Pennsylvania. One day he rang up and booked a meeting, asking me, “Do you understandThe Monkees?” I’m looking at this guy I used to see on the back of cereal boxes, and I must’ve given him the right answer because we went to work on a video and archival projects. We lived near to each other and started playing music together. It turned into a long and creative unfolding of recordings, tours, and friendship. I’m extremely grateful for the career doors he opened for me and the stage craft I learned from him. Of course I was devastated when he died, and I wrote a song “Like a Big Brother” (still to be recorded) that summed up our connection.

Q and R?

Q: How do you feel about collaborations?: i’ve only ever been half-involved with one that fizzled out. as a whole i’m super awkward and anxious and would never approach anyone but i’d love to do a collaboration at some point with other writers!! i dont think i could like, take turns writing and do a joint piece with someone but i’d love to do like a Themed Thing where say we all took one character (member of bruno’s gang, la squadra, jojo, jobro) and then did a piece on a similar theme (inspired by a book/musical/folklore/fairy tale) or in the same au world. i think that would be fun! i don’t like ‘shared out’ collabs because i always feel like i can tell what one writer wrote and what the other did?? i LOVE good omens but like i can definitely hear pratchett’s voice come through way more in some of it. 

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?  my favourite fanfic writer i discovered through their overwatch fic, they do not write for jojo. tw for their overwatch stuff for dark themes but here. non-fanfic wise, i feel like anne rice, francesca lia block and maybe like laura purcell come out the strongest in my writing? but influences/heroes include: terry pratchett, oscar wilde, victor hugo, donna tartt, diana wynne jones, angela carter, shirley jackson. i’m a big fan of short horror stories, gothic romance and fantasy with that kind of . . . i’m not sure how to describe it other than a kind of twee self-effacing britishness (which diana wynne jones and terry pratchett do in ABUNDANCE). i also love classic children’s/girl’s fiction - stuff like enid blyton, boarding school books, frances hodgson burnett and noel streatfeild!!
