August 12th 1922 saw the birth of the Scottish actor Fulton Mackay.
Fulton is remembered as the prison officer, also named 'Mackay', in the BBC television comedy series Porridge and its spin-off film, and as the lighthouse keeper in the UK version of Jim Henson's "Fraggle Rock.
Born in Paisley, e was brought up by a widowed aunt after the death of his mother. Mackay was trained as a quantity surveyor, he volunteered to join the RAF in 1941, but was rejected because of a perforated ear drum. He subsequently enlisted in the Black Watch and served for five years.
When he was demobilised, Fu;ton decided to become an actor and trained at RADA. Apart from the two roles mentioned above, he appeared in many films, such as Ben in Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, and on the stage, notably with the R.S.C. as Christofferson in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie. Fulton also played Inspector Davidson in the Jimmy Boyle biopic A Sense of Freedom. Other Scottish shows he was in over the years were Doctor Finlay's Casebook, The Master of Ballantrae and Rob Roy.
In 1974, he was considered for the role the fourth Doctor Who, but the role went to Tom Baker instead. He was married to the Irish actress Sheila Manahan.
A hybrid tea rose (gold with salmon tints on the outer petals) is named after him.

Armchair Theatre: According to the Rules (Thames, 1974)
"If only you understood, Inspector. You see, the great balm for everything in our family is money. A chap fell from a roof at work, father was getting ready to address a meeting at the time. Give the widow some money, he said, and get somebody else to finish the job. Other kids got kisses from their fathers, I got pound notes."
#armchair theatre#According to the Rules#classic tv#Single play#Dominic behan#1974#thames television#piers haggard#Liam Redmond#James Berwick#Oliver Maguire#Des Cave#J.G. Devlin#Paul Farrell#Sheila Manahan#Aidan Murphy#Allan McClelland#Fedelma Cullen#When Talking Pictures TV announced a while back that they were about to commence a run of Armchair Theatre repeats I made a mental note to#Record them and enjoy the many I haven't managed to see before. I then promptly forgot all about it and have never managed to catch a#Single one. Then the other night I happened to be browsing the schedule and saw that they would be showing this ep; the guest cast (an#Enviable who's who of Irish acting talent from the mid 70s character acting school) piqued my interest. I recorded it. I watched it. And it#Turns out to be one of the (relatively speaking) few eps I've already seen. It must have been on one of networks very first AT dvd sets#When they were only dipping into the Thames years. The fact that I didn't recognise it at all by title cast or the TV listings summary#Should be a sign of an iffy play but actually this is very good and once I remembered having seen it before I also remembered having#Enjoyed it. Dominic Behan may never have achieved the immortality of brother Brendan (dead ten years by the time this play aired) but he#Was a decent writer in his own stead and his intricately plotted multi generational tale of political intrigue and dark secrets is really#Quite an ambitious script for a 50 minute weekly anthology. The excellent cast help raise this one too but some scenes of a casually#Homophobic nature (although lampshaded by the revelation that a homophobic reaction was part of some devious plotting) can make this a#Slightly uncomfortable viewing experience.

Seven Days to Noon (1950)
Less attentive movie critics and historians would have readers believe that the nuclear thriller began with and is defined by Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). But fourteen years before Dr. Strangelove came John and Roy Boulting’s Seven Days to Noon where, unlike Dr. Strangelove, Fail-Safe (1964), or Crimson Tide (1995), the moral center in the Boulting brothers’ film is not a military figure or a politician. Its central character is a civilian, and the debate over nuclear warfare is not just discussed among military and political officials, but on a civilian front. Only five years after the Second World War’s conclusion and the beginning of the Cold War, it is remarkable how Seven Days to Noon – produced by British Lion Films and distributed in Britain by London Films – works as entertainment and a thinkpiece. Though it might not be as eloquent as its successors – given its release date, how could it be (whether or not those cinematic successors have ever shifted cultural attitudes towards nuclear weapons, however, is dubious)?  – this is a nuclear thriller pulsating with urgency and desperation.
That aforementioned civilian is a conscience-stricken Professor Willingdon (Barry Jones), who has penned a letter to the British Prime Minister (Ronald Adam) that he has stolen a small nuclear warhead from a research center. The warhead is small enough to fit in a briefcase, and Willingdon has threatened to detonate the device near the center of British government unless his demands are met. Those demands: that the government stops plans for nuclear proliferation immediately and moves towards disarmament. Willingdon has given the government a week – the deadline is noon on the next Sunday. Scotland Yard, MI5, and eventually the military are mobilized to find Willingdon and neutralize the device. From the government and security forces’ point of view, we follow Scotland Yard Superintendent Folland (André Morell) and his subordinates as they convince the professor’s daughter, Ann (Sheila Manahan) and his assistant, Stephen Lane Hugh Cross) to cooperate with the search. Meanwhile, Willingdon attempts to avoid authority figures, searching for bed-and-breakfasts and introducing himself to people as a British Museum researcher.
The screenplay, written by James Bernard (a film score composer best known for his Hammer Horror work, who would proceed to win a writing Academy Award for his only screenplay), Roy Boulting, Paul Dehn (1964′s Goldfinger,1965′s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold), and Frank Harvey (1959′s I’m All Right Jack, 1963′s Heavens Above!) balance their writing between the powerful and the powerless. As Sunday midday draws closer, the viewer learns of the considerations the government and security forces must make in protecting the civilians within the potential blast radius. Evacuation plans are prepared. Could information have been released sooner, or would that have necessarily inspired a destructive panic? Well before the government reveals Willingdon’s intentions and reasons for visible military buildups, Londoners and those in its outskirts gossip about the causes for these developments. The Soviets are amassing troops in Central Europe, says one woman the professor just happens to overhear. If so, Britain will have the firepower to annihilate them all, says an intoxicated man. Willingdon’s head snaps towards that inebriated bloke during that scene, as the professor – in his meek, hushed tone laced with prim lecture – attempts to educate his fellow man of the madness of mutually assured destruction.
The screenwriters are willing to display anti-nuclear politics in ways that would not mature for another decade, as well as juxtaposing those politics with those believing that a zero-sum international environment can only be resolved through unrelenting nuclear force. Again, the distinction comes not among military brass and politicians – who, in Seven Days to Noon, are almost uniformly pro-proliferation (not once does the Prime Minister consider Willingdon’s demands, even when catastrophe is imminent – differences of opinion from other government and military officials probably should exist, but the writers somehow let the Prime Minister go unchallenged) – but among civilians. Too many nuclear thrillers deprive civilians of that agency to have inflexible political stances on nuclear warfare, as if they have not given this whole atomic warfare issue much thought. Instead, it seems like non-combatants only care about nuclear holocaust only after it has happened. What a ridiculous thought, Seven Days to Noon’s writers assert, that people who are not the ultimate masters of their own destiny are apathetic towards usually intangible issues. This is courageous writing.
With all these details packed into how the government is managing the crisis and how Willingdon is spending his time across London’s neighborhoods and skirting the police and military, the Boulting brothers – who co-edited Seven Days to Noon as well – establish a steady drumbeat to the passing days of the interministerial effort to apprehend Willingdon. No scene and no individual day depicted in the film feels misplaced, too short, or too long. The use of around seven locations in and around London – including (and not limited to) – Westminster, various London Underground stations, the London Zoo, and the old Wembley Stadium – offer realism, urgency. And however the filmmakers received permission, cinematographer Gilbert Taylor’s (Dr. Strangelove, 1977′s Star Wars) shots of Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Westminster Bridge all bereft of any human life contribute to the enormity and seriousness of this fictional situation. A sequence within St. Stephen’s Church in Westbourne Park – still devastated from The Blitz – creates a dreadful atmosphere contrasting two conceptions of salvation.
Professor Willingdon, willing to slaughter millions just to illustrate his beliefs in the wastefulness and futility of nuclear proliferation, has witnessed how his life’s passion – science – can be twisted for apocalyptic purposes. In his writings to the Prime Minister and conversations with others, his utopian, egalitarian worldviews of scientific progress have been devastated by his proximity to his work on a weapon of mass destruction. Opposed to the Prime Minister’s stiff upper-lipped support for proliferation, Professor Willingdon is sometimes portrayed sympathetically. Jones (1954′s Brigadoon, 1956′s War and Peace) provides his character with haggard sensibilities and a suicidal determination that he is acting for a greater good. Willingdon is recognized as mentally unfit, but this is given little attention after it is briefly mentioned by investigators. For in Seven Days to Noon, we witness a man realizing the extent of his moral limitations, and how humanity – tethered to the contradictions of nuclear warfare’s wholesale extermination – is confined to the whims of a responsible few.
Composer John Addison made his feature film debut with Seven Days to Noon, launching a five-decade career in which he became one of the best film score composers from Britain. His work in Seven Days to Noon has no sweeping melodic themes, but brief dissonant punctuations from the orchestra to amplify the editing’s already-surging tension as revelations are unearthed and Willingdon’s deadline approaches. It is a journeyman-like debut for an esteemed composer.
The Boulting brothers – identical twins from England that produced, co-wrote, and directed several socially-conscious dramas – are better known in Europe than in the United States. Seven Days to Noon, modestly received in the United States, is the only film in the brothers’ filmography that they directed jointly. The brothers also co-produced and, as mentioned prior, co-edited the film. Similar to the Coen brothers, it is difficult to disentangle how much responsibility each brother placed into a certain aspect of the filmmaking. But no matter the division of labor, the Boultings have crafted a movie deserving of regards in the canon of Western nuclear thriller movies.
My rating: 9/10

Seven Days to Noon [1950 feature film]
In the Boulting Brothers' understated documentary-style tale of an errant nuclear scientist, Professor Willingdon (Barry Sloane) is spotted by his daughter (Sheila Manahan) and her boyfriend (Hugh Cross) entering the Cockspur Street subway entrance to "Trafalgar Square" Bakerloo Line station. They rather quaintly pause to buy tickets, and subsequently lose their quarry when he catches a northbound train. He is eventually seen leaving by an unknown station (any suggestions?). "Trafalgar Square" was later amalgamated with the existing "Strand" Northern Line station and the new Jubilee Line terminus (now defunct) as the present-day "Charing Cross." Although not clean on the second-to-last screen-grab, a directional sign can be seen indicating the route to both "Strand" and the mainline "Charing Cross" stations.

For a Filipina celebrity ahead of her time, she was gone too soon
Elvira Manahan was a society and fashion icon whose reputation remains unrivaled to this day. All that came to an end the day she was murdered on October 14, 1986—leaving behind a legacy of glamour and mystery.
Every generation has had its share of "It" girls. These icons were trendsetters when it came to fashion and lifestyle, and everyone who's anyone wanted to be like them; or even have just a whiff of their aura. Their legacies stand the test of time. They would eventually be known for years, decades beyond their lifetime. During the 1950s in the Philippines, one such "It" girl was Elvira Manahan. Her show-stopping moments and fashionable stunts could rival Bianca Jagger.
She was a fashion icon whose eccentricity, laughter and unpredictability made herself well-known in everyone she encountered. According to Nestor Torre, director and co-host of Elvira on the late-night TV talk show Two for the Road, "With her, an ordinary day turned out to be special; an adventure."
In the Philippine social landscape, no one has, or would ever, come close to being as fascinating a subject as her. She had "it." In Filipino terms, "may dating." There was just something about her that would draw anyone in. She was a combination of sosyal and wacky. When women were expected to be prim and proper, Elvira's vivaciousness attracted the attention of younger people, and different men gravitated to her—even though she was married. She aged gracefully, and she never let her age get the best of her when it came to living her life. She dared to be different.
Her first marriage was to Armando "Mandy" Eduque. During the war, they were to become a family as Elvira was pregnant with their son. The Eduques were hiding for a couple of days in a dugout they made in their yard when their dog kept on barking. Afraid that it would catch the attention of soldiers, Armando went out to take the dog away. Elvira heard a lot of shooting right after. Armando never returned. A few days later, Elvira found Armando's dead body on the street. This would lead to her having nightmares about the tragedy that she would wake up with self-inflicted scratches.
Elvira met the renowned OB-GYN, Dr. Constanino "Tito" Manahan, then got married to Tito that same year. They had two sons: Juan (Johnny) and Constantino Jr. (Bonggoy). Elvira was often teased about how their romance started because of how "the courtship began with her legs wide open!"
Amid the social conventions of her time, she wasn't afraid to be herself. She would laugh out loud at a time when this was considered uncouth. She was part of high society, and during her time, these elites looked down on people in show business. Yet, seemingly in Elvira's fashion, she still went on to be a part of that world, showcasing her acting chops, such as Director Ishmael Bernal's directorial debut, Pagdating sa Dulo, Charito Solis' Ang Pulubi, and Christian Espiritu's Alaga.
Elvira was invited by media tycoon Eugenio Lopez Jr to host Two for the Road alongside Joey Lardizabal; then, later on, Nestor Torre. People would wait until late in the night to watch her show because of her legendary outfits and accessories. The topics they discussed on the show went from serious to the unusual—fitting for the unpredictable host.
George Sison attacked the Marcoses for their excessive wealth and spending in a newspaper column during the pre-Martial Law days. When news about the scandalous recorded tape of the lovemaking between then-president Ferdinand Marcos and American starlet Dovie Beams became public, Elvira couldn't believe that it was the president, especially when she heard his screams during orgasm. She thought it could be Vic Pacia, the late comedian who used to mimic the president.
Imelda Marcos set up a meeting with Elvira and her friend, George Sison, probably hoping to save face. Imelda shared how there's no privacy in the palace because, in every room, there's a guard. Whenever she and Ferdinand would make love, he would scream. Elvira was finally convinced that it was the then-president that she heard on the tape.
Elvira Manahan also rubbed elbows with Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., Marlon Brando, and Pat Boone. Much like those who were around her, these Hollywood celebrities were also drawn to her charm.
Elvira's favorite expressions seemed to foreshadow what will happen to her later in life. "I need that like a hole in the head" and "When I die, I'd like to go with a bang!" were her go-to phrases.
A young man named Jaime Balatbat came into her life as someone she always talked to. He was even assumed to be her lover. He would spend hours talking to her about his problems, which Elvira always listened to.
On October 14, 1986, the news of Elvira's death at the hands of Balatbat shocked the public. One morning, Balatbat went to the Manahan residence to get his commission from a real estate deal as he was with the real estate agent that negotiated the sale of the Manahan's Forbes Park home. Since it was still early in the morning, the maid offered him a seat, and some refreshments, then told him that Elvira wouldn't be up for a few more hours. The noticeably agitated Balatbat shot the maid, Margarita, then went around the house and shot the other helpers, Sheila and Estrella. The crazed realtor then went upstairs to demand funds from Elvira before killing her. He shot her, then bashed her head in using a dumbbell. Elvira would, later on, be found slumped on her worktable, bleeding. Much like her favorite expression, she was shot in the head. Sheila managed to crawl out of the gate to call a neighbor's maid's attention, who then notified the village security. Elvira, and the rest of the victims, were rushed to the Makati Medical Center. Elvira underwent brain surgery but died later on.
Balatbat's motive for killing Elvira is still sketchy. He already had a criminal record due to a near-fatal assault on a US embassy official. He was put to jail for the deaths of Elvira and her two helpers. He would eventually die in a prison fight two years later. Elvira's case was so prominent that it was brought up to the Supreme Court.
Elvira was a legendary socialite who was impossible to miss. Her eclectic style can get anyone's attention, her sharp wit made her a great conversationalist, and her electrifying personality drew anyone and everyone in—not to mention her infectious laugh that would radiate from every household's television.

Karena terus berkembang, Tamiya pun akhirnya dikenal sebagai “First in Quality Around the World”. Sheila On 7, Letto dan masih banyak lagi loh. Sampai bertemu disana ya 🙈 Jangan lupa beli tiket~ (di Stadion Manahan Solo)
