Do you ever worry that an item you pick up might be covered or laced with something gross/dangerous?

hey anon! i’m definitely mindful of this, especially in a big city like nyc that has all sorts of gross and hazardous materials around, but that’s why I pick up almost everything with a set of these bad boys that I keep in my bag at all times

they’re called trongs and are meant for handling messy food, but I was looking for a solution that was easier than stopping and putting a glove on and taking it off again all the time and these fit the bill for me!

I also wear waterproof work gloves (and sometimes a mask) when I clean items, so in general I’m not touching them with my bare skin until they have been cleaned/disinfected. And of course I always wash and/or sanitize my hands after handling any items.

What Exactly Is Sannyo Smoking?

Well of course it sucks Mamizou, don't you remember what she said it's made of?

Now, an herb you can smoke that can grow on a mountain. The first, most obvious, initial guess would be marijuana. It's a weed after all, it can grow basically anywhere. Plus, let us be honest, it would be a little funny.

Plus, it is apparently spreading over northern Japan right now as a weed. They used to grow it for hemp material, not to smoke, it would probably not do much, but that wouldn't stop Sannyo if she wanted to give it a shot.

(Except I'm deliberately teasing)

There is a very, very obvious reason why it's not marijuana.

Marijuana has no nicotine, even though you can smoke it, it's not by any stretch of the imagination "tobacco"

Even if we imagine a world where this is the only thing Sannyo ever smoked, Mamizou smoked it with her and just said it was bad tobacco, not to mention Mamizou has recently been to the outside world and would probably know weed in seconds. (Which, although hypothetical, would have made for a hilarious Mamizou thought bubble)

We are looking for "tobacco" after all, we need nicotine, not just anything you can smoke, but it's a weed and a popular joke, so I obviously had to tease.

I could go through every variant of wild Nicotiana, tobacco was even imported to Japan by Portuguese sailors in 1542, and it's cultivation was legalized in 1625. The Hakurei barrier was formed in 1885, that's actually plenty of time for actual wild tobacco to spread.

But it might not work either.

While we might find some enthusiastic and previously cultivated tobacco growing as a weed that spread up to the mountains, it's not going to be unique enough. It'll be growing all over the place by the time it gets up a mountain. And the village would be smoking that exact same thing.

But most importantly, it's no fun.

Truth be told, there is a genus of Nicotiana that would work well in mountains, furthermore, Portugal actually had some at the time as an import from the Americas. But thats no fun, so I'll just return to this later when I inevitably run out of exotic options.

After all, if its tobacco made from "herbs" it would boarder on cheating to just use nicotiana, regardless of the form it ends up in.

Thankfully, there are other herbs and weeds beyond nicotiana that actually have nicotine, it really would be worthwhile check one of those.

And I've got a fun one. A whole family in fact.

Just above the Genus: "Nicotiana" is the Tribe: "Nicotianeae" and above that we find the family Solanaceae.

The Solanaceae, also known as the potato or deadly nightshade family

Nicotine is a naturally produced alkaloid in the nightshade family of plants

It contains everything from eggplants and other vegetables to the infamous Deadly Nightshade. (Atropa belladonna)

And of course, like I said, further down the family, it even has nicotiana itself. All of them contain nicotine to some greater or lesser extent. (Yes, hilariously even eggplants, a little bit)

Solanaceae consists of about 98 genera and some 2,700 species. They grow naturally in more parts of the world than wild Nicotiana.

But we are just going to be looking through the nightshade variations, maybe some fruit, but no potatoes today. And these are coveniently famous for their narcotic effects.

And some varieties, such as the Datura stramonium (occasionally called the Devil's Trumpet) had its leaves smoked in pipes and cigarettes, so much they were traded by the East India Company in the 18th century. And since it was popular for traditional medicine, some people might have even planted it.

But that type is not native to Japan, so it's got the same problem as the nicotiana. Not to mention, even though its an invasive weed, and can survive a little below the freezing point, in its current state, it probably doesn't like mountains. It probably wouldn't last a full winter on one.

This might be definite enough to just say it can be some hypothetical, wild, non specific variation of nightshade with the right combination of alkaloids and nicotine and presumably, relatively non deadly in the form Sannyo uses it.

Or maybe it is just better adapted to mountains form of imported of the Datura stramonium I just mentioned. I doubt even if it spread like a weed, that anyone but Sannyo would bother to figure out you can smoke that type of plant as tobacco.

But we are mostly just having fun at this point.

I doubt we could possibly think Zun cared up to this point, and definitely not beyond this point, we are just doing a fun overanalysis after all. Zun almost always seems to go for extinct species anyway, so it wouldn't be fun to follow that train of thought regardless..

[But if we just want a probable canonical answer Zun thought up. He might have just meant some non specific extinct variation of nightshade, since if there is at least one native version then that's enough to claim there could have once been others,

Besides, it's even possible zun just imagined she could possibly even mix her favorite flowers somehow, which while she probably could not, it would definitely be cute. ]

But we are going to take this further anyway to see if we can find something real and possible that currently exists today.

The simplest thing to think of native to Japan is just Japanese belladonna (Zun's proof of concept for an imaginary extinct nightshade if he really wanted a hypothetical one)

Scopolia japonica, also called Japanese belladonna. It's about as dangerous as the name implies. If eaten by mistake it can cause hallucinations. And while it no doubt contains at least some nicotine, it also contains the alkaloids Scopolamine

And more hilariously Hyoscyamine, known for helping the colon or bladder...

yes, you can use this extract to help you poop or pee if you want too.

Which is even funnier than the marijuana joke i made earlier.

And the only other species in the Scopolia genus is pretty similar and in Korea.

So we'll want to find something different.

But we are trapped. We only have imports left.

And the Datura genus we'd likely want is stuck in the Americas so we can only really consider a variety that came from those possible 18th century imports of Datura stramonium.

They are pretty perfect, tbh, spread widely to the Old World early where it has also become naturalized, and since it was already a weed that could endure dry climate and fairly cold environments. It could probably spread up a mountain.

They are our best bet for something you can smoke for recreation, with nicotine, outside the nicotiana genus that only Sannyo would use. If smoked people used its properties for recreation but you can also use it for anesthesia. Inject it's primary ingredient Atropine and you can use it for all sorts of weird stuff. (Though I pretty much resigned myself to having Atropine in the plant the moment I decided to run up and down the nightshade family).

Though in truth, she's probably just smoking wild tobacco that has lost a lot of flavor while struggling to adapt the mountain. So I'll move on to the most likely answer.

Portugal's more early tobacco is Nicotiana rustica, also called Aztec tobacco.

It is pretty tough and would probably adapt to a mountain pretty well.

I'd like to think it's the Datura stramonium since it's cooler and weird though.

In overview:

The simplest, best answer is just wild imported Aztec tobacco (Nicotiana rustica) from Portugal. Which had trade with Japan open up extremely early. Its honestly perfect for this

Followed by the more provocative option of Devil's Trumpet (Datura stramonium) imported later in the 18th century.

and the funny option. The only one actually native to Japan

Japanese belladonna (Scopolia japonica)

But it's almost definitely just that Aztec tobacco. (Nicotiana rustica)

We could just imagine she mixes flowers or herbs into it to validate her "herbs" comment if we want (which again, would be cute)

how do you guys like your one-shot collections? normally when i read a collection of short one-shots unrelated to each other on ao3, i don't mind it being on a single work (meaning each chapter is its own fic), as that's what i've read before and it's easy for me to bookmark. but some folks are saying they prefer people post the fics separately and just put them in a series or something. i suppose it's easier to find individual stories that way, but doesn't it clog up the ship tag? what do you think?

what do you guys like? whether it's a collection of tumblr ask prompts or drabbles or a monthly/weekly writing exercise or something of the same sort, do you like the fics posted separately on their own or do you like them all in one place?

More trans Shadowheart brain worms from early morning idling.

Nocturne being the only person that really understands her in the cloister for so long, and vice versa. Telling one another that it will all be different when their training is complete (yeah it's an allegory within an allegory) with nothing but the future looking so bright for them. But Shadowheart will never have a future, not with the continual brainwashing and memory wiping. She keeps forgetting promises made, and Nocturne has to deal with that while Shadowheart is broken and remade for seemingly endless decades.

Shadowheart rediscovering that friendship over and over again, continually going back to her until it's too much for Nocturne to take. After one session of memory erasure, Shadowheart tries to go back to the only person she remembers and discovers that Nocturne has to stay away for a while to protect herself for once. That last bit of comfort in the cloister is gone, and all she can do is beg in her prayers for a respite from the confusing emotions battling over her broken memories. It's all too much for one person to handle and she lashes out. She takes it out on other acolytes, turning herself into a reflection of her own tormentors because this one connection, thought unbreakable, shatters.

Not having Nocturne in her life anymore, not able to remember anything important to her other than Shar, pushes her into training for the mission that leads into the beginning of the game. "Willingly" letting her memory be wiped yet again.

And side-note about the one shot collection: I didn't just randomly decide to use a cleric of Ilmater as a love interest. Ilmater is literally an avatar of compassion. He eases the suffering of others, taking the pain of the oppressed and those in great need and enduring it himself if it means saving even one person. His followers are encouraged to seek out the same sort of injustices and personal traumas, and to become shelter for those in need.

He's the god of Hurt/Comfort. How could I not?

Hello! I just recently watched LMK and predictably immediately got brainrot and I've been Loving reading your meta and theories! Love your takes and analysis, they all feel very well though out and well supported by canon and i can't help but chomp them up like a little goblin.

I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on something that i've noticed and feel could make for intriguing developments and/or conflict later. Something I've noticed is every time after MK comes down from his monkey form he seems wildly drained (most obvious in s4e8 and tew special), and i was wondering what you make of it? Is it just the effect of him constantly pushing it down, does it seem like it's too much for him to physically handle? some other third thing? More importantly, if it's a Thing that's gong to be a constant symptom of his monkey form how do you think it's going to come into play in future episodes? Especially relating to any of your theories (eamk, mk vs wukong, mei hero mk warrior, etc...)? Just thinking how MK could be convinced or manipulated into a position where he's at risk of hurting himself from power overuse or maybe how in a direct fight against monkey MK the win condition might not be overpowering him but out lasting him.

Anyways *inhales cigarette* I wish I knew what was going on with MK any of the time anon. It seems like he can't help but flicker into Monkey Form at some points, yet prolonged use leaves him weak. During his fight with Azure he starts off feeling very un-MK-like, but halfway through he begins to act more like himself. At the end of 4x13 he's practically thrown out of his Monkey Form by reality fraying apart. And, despite his monkey form being his true identity (maybe), it hurts him. It causes him pain whenever he starts flickering into it. Like, what. What is going on here

So at this point, it seems like MK's Monkey Form is too much for his body to handle...but why. I've drawn a connection between Monkey Demon MK, Samadhi Fire Mei, and Jade Emperor Azure many times before, like the way they're all containers for uncontrollable power, but MK's case is particularly strange.

My first thought would be that it's tied to the way MK views himself and his identity. So maybe it's part him pushing it down, part it being too much for him to physically handle, and part secret third thing.

But yeah, I'm super intrigued to see how all this will be implemented in the future! I really like the idea of outlasting MK to beat him

ok i just reread kuwsk and i absolutely adore this fic oh my goddddd. do you have any headcanons for teen!luke and leia in that verse. they’re adorable as children, but obi-wan and anakin’s constant commiserations about how the twins will run them into the ground as teens is soooo funny to me

can you imagine a vacation with the twins when they're like. 17. how absolutely hellish it would be.

they go to scarif and han scores an invitation because luke begged and begged for his bff to come along and obi-wan was absolutely 100% against it because he literally has permanent beef with a teenager but anakin points out that they would definitely figure out which twin was interested/dating han if he came along and then know which twin to focus their "you can do so much better sweetie" energies on, and also they could probably force han into free baby care/baby sitter of child rey while they go spend some time alone free of children and free of clothes.....

what actually happens of course is luke falls madly in love with someone on scarif within their first few days there, and leia and han dutifully follow him around while carrying rey (han is rocking the front baby harness for five year old rey) and the trip ends with luke heartbroken and sullen, staring out the window of their plane as they take off and refusing to talk to leia or han because it just hurts so much + leia more in love with han after seeing him handle kid rey for the whole time + rey liking han best now even though he lost her like five times + obi-wan and anakin, well rested and well fucked but still unsure about which twin solo is seeing because luke looks heartbroken and leia is resting her head on han's shoulder but han has his hand on luke's knee in silent comfort??????

IMBI is going up against 2AL in @tmntaucompetition today SO I wrote a quick one shot with CMH Leo's perspective of this fic (plus a bit extra)! Vote IMBI so they tie (and check out both AUs if you haven't yet, they're both super good!)

If Leo has to be honest, he wasn’t all that thrilled about the whole… multidimensional sports competition thing when he first got there. Sure, normally he would’ve been. Normally he would’ve jumped at the opportunity to have some fun and meet some alternate versions of himself and his family, compare their universes and such (and, okay, maybe watch Donnie geek out too). 

But normally he wouldn’t be, y’know, a ghost. Invisible, intangible, the works, and surrounded by people who can’t. See him. He’d thought he’d gotten past the whole dissociation thing – and to be fair, his brothers have been wearing their goggles the whole time, which definitely helps – but… seeing all these versions of himself and his brothers and knowing that they can’t see him… knowing he might as well not exist to them…

Well. It digs up some old, not-so-good feelings. 

His brothers definitely notice, as much as he tries to hide it, and they offer to leave early, but he turns them down. Judging by the looks they give each other, though, no matter what he says they’re probably going to drag him back as soon as they lose – because considering the fact that his team is effectively down a player, and one of their other players is Donnie, Leo is under no illusions that they’ll end up winning the whole thing. One round? Maybe, if they’re lucky. Depends who they’re up against. But the whole thing? No way. 

And… he can’t help but feel guilty, just a bit. He knows for a fact all his brothers would’ve loved this type of thing under any other circumstances. Hell, they still do – Raph is looking around in awe, Mikey is barely holding himself back from running around to make some new friends, and Donnie – well, it goes without saying that Donnie is basically in heaven right now. He’s actually using the speech to text function of his tech gauntlet for once, dictating notes rather than typing them so he can stim with his free hand. And Leo just knows he’s seconds away from bolting off to gather up the other Donnies and compare notes. 

… Leo doesn’t want them to give that up. Not for him. 

Not that it matters in the end, since he can’t exactly stop them if they decide to go home early. And there’s… a tiny, selfish part of him – a part that he hates – that’s. Well. Kind of relieved. Which, of course, makes him feel even more guilty, because how could he be happy about taking something away from his brothers that would make them happy?

So. Yeah. All in all, interdimensional sports tournament? Not as fun as it sounds!

And then he meets another Leo. 

Key word: meets. Because this Leo? For some reason, he can see him. And Leo doesn’t understand how until they actually talk, and he finds out they’re in the same damn boat. Well – not the exact same, other-Leo is cursed while Leo is a ghost, but tomato Hamato. The point is: this is someone who gets it. Someone he can commiserate with. And as he finds out, staring in wonder at his counterpart’s hand on his shoulder, someone he can touch. 

The nice thing about being variations on the same person is that neither of them need to say anything, the other Leo wordlessly pulling him in for a hug that Leo desperately needs. There’s no warmth from it, just an odd sort of pressure, but it’s more than he’s had in such a long time and he finds himself clinging on like he’ll die (... well, die again) if he lets go.

He can practically feel the concerned looks from his brothers, but he does his best to ignore them. And, he thinks very hard in their directions, if any of them bring up the tears that are definitely not in his eyes when he finally pulls away, he will personally ensure they will never again know peace in their lives.

They end up losing their first match. It was closer than Leo had expected, if he’s honest – he was able to use his invisibility to his advantage, sneaking up on the other team and smacking the ball out of their hands and towards his own brothers. But he ends up getting distracted near the end at one point, his hand phasing through the ball instead of hitting it, and it’s all downhill from there. 

He’s not actually too upset about it – sure, it would’ve been nice to win a round or two, but considering they basically only had two and a half players versus the other group’s full team, it’s not exactly surprising. His brothers ask again if he wants to go home, and like the last time, he tells them no – except he means it this time, and he’s pretty sure they can tell from the way their expressions soften. They don’t seem too surprised at his answer, though to be fair, he’s been very noticeably in better spirits (hah) since his encounter with the other Leo. 

They’d asked, earlier, when the two Leos got bored of scaring the shells off unsuspecting bystanders and went back to their respective families. They couldn’t see the other Leo, so Leo had to explain everything to them – and their faces had softened then, too. He knows they’ve been worried about him, made sure to have at least one of them by his side at all times, and he still feels kind of guilty about that. 

But it’s… less so, now. The guilt, the anxiety, the familiar feeling of not being real… it’s all settled down, for the most part. Knowing that even just one other person sees him, understands what he’s going through, helps more than words can say. 

So, yeah, this time when his brothers offer him the chance to bail out, he just shakes his head with a smile and turns to look for a spot on the bleachers so he can cheer his new friend on.
