some inane ramblings

something something when raph is missing/unavaliable, leo is the one who will step up and take the role as the "leader" (i.e. provide direction and act as the voice of reason), often without realizing he's doing it.

for example, in "man vs sewer," when raph goes "missing," leo is the one to steer the team into finding him.

this episode is one of the best examples of leo acting as "leader," as, within it, he sheds his funnyman/"faceman" persona (as seen in the above screenshots) and allows us a glimpse into his underlying characterization.

some more examples from the episode include:

when raph falls down the tunnel and mikey yells out, "our football!", leo (and donnie, but he glances at leo) gives him this look:

(which prompts him to add, "and raph!")

or similarly, when he's trying to direct his brothers to find raph

[Leo: "Raph is all alone! Guys, we need to --"] [Mikey: "Go down that slide again?"] [Donnie: "Yes, agreed. Raph will make it home eventually, I'm sure."] [Leo: No! Raph's our brother, and--"]

(Immediately after this exchange, he 'tubes' Mikey and reasons with Donnie to convince him to find Raph.)

"Then give us ice for our horriblymangledbodies!"

Is the one to frequently point out the obvious (directing the team, stopping them from unnecessary dawdling).

Comes up with and directs the plan of action. [L: "He still can't tell it's us! But if we get this sewer sludge off... Mikey! Open that flood valve!"]

And when that fails, he implements Lace Face and "the midnight special" to actually get Raph back.

Reverts (but also leans into?) the trope of the leader character saying the lesson after they learn it; [L: Buuut we learned a valuable something about never something-ing you alone again."]

also the overall premise?

it seems likely from underlying context that leo organized this day out (as a break from splinter's training.) when donnie gets suspicious of where raph got his tube tire, leo is the one one to steer them away from potential conflict.

just the whole episode. if you watch it and start looking, you'll find tons of little examples.

since Eng is getting 7.5 soon(?), I felt motivated to go back to my Meleanor rig and make her a couple of lesson animations! ...except for alchemy, because the cauldron bubbles proved too hard to photoshop around, whoops.

Watched the third episode of Digital Circuis. And yeah, any concerns or doubts that I had about this show had been resolved

Folks, do not be swayed by online irony poisoning. This is a show with heart. It is not nonstop Lol Random humor, it allows you to sit in a moment and breathe in the tense mood of a scene. It is not a nihilist "Nothing Matters :D" type of show, it is absolutely genuine in its storytelling and has things to say. Not to mention some additional logistical questions I had have been answered about the setup which makes me even more invested

Trust me. Disregard any and all prior opinions you had about the show and watch the three episodes currently out. I'll admit that the first episode feels like it meanders a bit, sometimes feels it leans a bit too far into the Dark Humor Randomness, but it's necessary for setting up the rest of the series. Just ride it out. You won't regret it

Salute to you Gooseworx/Glitch. Can't wait to see where things go from here

thinking about not only the specific people lucanis pulls in to represent the 'locks' in his psyche, but the storytelling that happens in the structure/order of them. the underlying ideas are presented something like:

the lucanis who went into the ossuary never came back out again; he died down there (the boy caterina raised is gone forever) -> you're putting yourself in danger doing this (by being close to me), you should leave because I can't bear it if you get hurt because of me -> it doesn't matter even if we do try this, it won't work anyway (again because of me) ('you know what he's like, you can open the door but he won't walk through it' :'( oofie doofie) -> what if the real secret is that there was never anything but the monster in here from the beginning. you should leave, there was never anything here worth saving in the first place. (implicitly: what if I deserved what happened, all along.)

it runs pretty cleanly from outward-oriented attachment anxiety ('caterina won't even want me back like this, she won't recognize me (the same way I no longer recognize myself)) and gradually deeper inwards until we reach self-image and self worth. or you know, the harrowing basic lack of it lol.

"careful -- they'll know we're not right," spite says in one of their first scenes... but clearly, some very deep part of lucanis has feared or suspected for much longer than that that there's something inherently not right at the core of him, way before any demon entered the picture. and the voice he gives those lines to is the person who should know him better than anyone in the world, who he has loved more than anyone in the world -- and who deliberately chose to hurt him so horrifically anyway. 'It's better if I'm just a monster and deserved what happened than it is to allow for the idea that the brother I love doesn't really exist and maybe never did'. it's better if he's fundamentally flawed in some way that needed fixing to help him survive, and that's why caterina chose to hurt him again and again -- out of love. (this one I think he might have a very sad wakeup call on one day if he ever ends up with the responsibility and care of a child of his own in some way and realizes just how alien the idea of ever intentionally hurting them for any reason is to him. oh buddy. also interesting that he keeps caterina as the outermost lock -- there IS a distance he keeps there that he hasn't with illario. he doesn't resent her 'anymore' he says, but he also keeps her carefully further away from his deepest self.)

as far as I could tell the only note in the mind prison that's fully hidden and needs to be uncovered is the sad painful helpless stupid little truth that even after all this, even knowing what happened... he still loves his brother. is there anything illario could ever do that would make lucanis completely stop loving him, do you think? sometimes the trouble with unconditional love is that it is, well. unconditional, even when some terms and conditions probably would have been in order haha.

that's the pattern you see there again and again; he would rather destroy and abandon and imprison himself at every turn than let go of love, even when it's just scraps, even when there's only ever enough of it to hurt him. it's only when rook shows up and as it were takes his hand and walks along with him that he can entertain the idea of changing the story of what walking out the door might mean in the end.

when i first watched the dance scene i had to look away because it made me feel like i was intruding on something. and then buck walks in and doesn't question anything and i think that's just beautiful.

he belongs there!!!! in the very personal scene!!! that's where he's supposed to be!!!!!!

I just can't turn my brain off for episode 7 because it's foundations are so contradictory. How can we believe that Piltover decided to change it's ways because one Zaunite kid died when Piltover has collectively proven throughout season 1 and 2 that they don't care about those kids?!!??

In season 1 enforcers regularly harassed and assaulted children in Zaun. In Act 1, Marcus tried to fire his pistol at Powder when she tried to escape him, he only stopped because she was out of range. Vi was a teenager when prison guards regularly beat her as she was falsely impropisoned in Stillwater by the same enforcer without question. Caitlyn didn't care that a child as young as Isha (probably 8) got thrown into Stillwater and neither did any of the guards. Jayce felt guilty that he killed Renni's son, but he never apologized for what he did, and chose to leave his body in the same place, in the same position he died for Renni to find her boy.

Remember that one scene where the camera lingered on that one Piltovan kid who has hurt when Jinx diverted the Grey back on Piltover and Ambessa wiped a tear from his eye? It's sad to know a child got hurt by the Grey, but do you know what other child was hurt by the Grey? VIKTOR. He was hurt by the Grey as a child, to the point that it was killing him by the time he was an adult, but Piltover, including Heimerdinger NEVER saw that as a wrong to be righted. I could keep going on about the ways the Piltovan cast have harmed children in one way or another, but that would get repetitive. The point is Piltover and it's cast have consistently proven that they don't care about children in Zaun in any way that matters, so to assume that Vi's death would bring about change is just dishonest to the story that's been told up until that episode.

Fr tho I would like to ALSO thank One Piece Fan Letter for finally giving me now what 10 year old me so desperately wanted. No one would have expected the central character in a fan focused short for one of the most popular shonen manga of ALL TIME to be a girl. The target demographic is boys. No one would have batted an eye if the short was about a little boy who was inspired by Luffy or Usopp or Zoro or Sanji. But it wasn't, it was about a young girl inspired by Nami. And tbh, knowing One Piece, I was genuinely shocked when that girl said she was almost 15 because SHE LOOKS IT and that's SO refreshing!! She looks like a kid!! And she acts like one, all rude and funny and flustered and stupid and brave and weird!! That right there is exactly what little me needed, what I've always said was my dream, a female character in shonen who is allowed to be a normal person just like the guys, instead of a Girl(tm) who is always played as opposed to everyone else's shenanigans and interests because girls don't like boy things, don't ya know(or at least looks like a normal person instead of a stick figure with boobs). I wanted a character like Nami's fan so bad as a kid. And she exists now!!

This episode really was special. This and Echoes of Wisdom is just so validating, like bit by bit we're making progress!! And while it's fucking long overdue I'm so thankful that I'm actually here to see it.
