#i feel you op i also started initially to read the stories but got busy grinding for events instead 😭 #i also haven't read any of the events not even madguy bc i feel like im gonna miss a lot of context i feel sorry for my boys #although I've recently caught up to ch7 and it made me a stornger more brainrotted madguy fan than before #ppl said it's gonna get more insane later on and im nervous #but so far. the stories are GOOD i highly recommend reading it if you're able to #it's just kamen rider but with extra steps #also to assuage your fear (i hope?) i heard from the grapevines that the change to leon is minimal you can easily miss it (via @chipsncookies)

YES I feel a lot better knowing other people are in the same boat as me! :') as someone who only plays games very casually, the events are fun (and have been a good excuse to get those support stories on characters I was kinda ignoring) but SO distracting -- and they have a connected overarching narrative of their own (make sure you read them in order when you get to them!) so I don't want to skip any. which I guess is to say that my problem is that I'm enjoying the writing too much! how dare they.

overall it definitely has that Kamen Rider tone and feeling I was hoping for and I am VERY pleased with it! I do kinda miss the kitbashy monsters, though otherwise it's basically just Rider But With More Random Scenes of Characters Being Ridiculous At Each Other and that is exactly what I was after. (also exquisite taste, Mad Guys are best guys 🤝)

and as long as I still haven't gotten to episode 13 and can therefore continue to be hilariously naive, let me just say that I know what I'm dreaming of for Leon. he deserves it.

...although I do think it would be VERY funny if they made that whole big "WE WILL BE UPDATING LEON'S SPRITES TO REFLECT STORY CHANGES!!!!" announcement and then it turns out that they just like. hue-shifted his eye color slightly to the right or something. it's not even a big story beat, Leon just decided to try out some color contacts, maybe comb his hair back a little, and we don't have the heart to tell him to stop. :(

Edit: As a note, to explain a little on Cals sexuality. He’s Panromantic but Demisexual, there’s a lot of reasons for this but his Demisexuality mainly relies on the facts that 1. He’s Trans (aka self-consciousness, has been taken advantage of because he’s trans, and negative effects of testosterone, i.e., vaginal atrophy) 2. He just doesn’t have a huge sex drive! It’s not the motivating factor for him in a relationship and he often finds that he doesn’t value/find interest in it very often at all.

With Shane it’s a little different. Further and longer into their relationship Cal opens up a lot more, but during the pre/early/mid stages, he almost never brings it up, suggests it, or pressures/presses about it. If anything he focuses A LOT more on the emotional, mental, and communication aspects of their relationship

Charles in season 2 (yes it's not going to happen but bear with me) is approached and offered heaven. Straight up. No uncertainty of "you might be given a tranquil eternity", no what-ifs about it. He's told "you are going to heaven if you move on. You will find eternal happiness." And he freaks out. He says "I'm going to heaven?" Because he can't imagine, with all of his anger in him, that he'd ever deserve that. Life hasn't ever been fair to him. It keeps taking everything he loves. Even his afterlife isn't fair to him.

But there it is. A guarantee. He was a good person. Now he can go to heaven. Despite everything he's done, he's earned eternal freedom. And there's Edwin, a foot away, maybe less. And he says, "Charles, you're going. I won't let you stay behind." And Charles can only stare. "What do you mean?" "I won't let you give this up for me, Charles. Heaven is waiting for you. Please, take it."

And Charles hesitates. Because he's never wanted an afterlife without Edwin in it. He can't imagine it. But it's so easy to be convicted when you can't see the other option. For Charles, he's always had a 'what-if'. He's never known what moving on really means for him.

Heaven vs earth should be an easy decision. And it is. Charles always knew what he was going to pick. He picks Edwin every time. "Charles, why do you keep giving things up for me? Please. Why wouldn't you go? How could you do something like this?"

"Because there's no heaven without you in it. Because I won't go anywhere you can't. Mate, it's not even a contest." Nothing else matters to Charles but Edwin. And he'll still choose Edwin every time. Over and over again. Because loving each other means choosing each other over and over and over again and Charles is built to love him, more than anything else in the world.

i'm going to exclude svsss from this list because i haven't finished it yet and therefore all of my opinions are just based on hearsay. but for the other two:

mdzs

1. jin guangyao (obviously); the antagonist of circumstance who but for a trick of fate and authorial intent could have easily been the novel's protagonist

2. lan xichen; the very best of men 🥹 truly the person with the kindest heart and (in my opinion) the most tragic ending in the novel*. also i'm xiyao trash, who's surprised

3. su she; he and i are the same person honestly

4. jiang cheng; i think if i was going to go insane about any of the core cast, i'd probably go insane over jiang cheng. and i probably would have, if jin guangyao didn't exist! sorry, jiang cheng.

5. wen qing; who doesn't love a mad scientist??

1. xie lian; no seriously, i love the protagonist of this novel the best because he is everything i love about jin guangyao and lan xichen burrito'd up into one character

2. shi wudu; the heavens' cuntiest proto-capitalist, and also arguably the elder brother that the mdzs fandom wishes nie mingjue was for nie huaisang 👀 (this opinion has gotten me into at least 4 fights on the mdzs subreddit specifically)

3. pei ming; my ethical slut general. also the other half of peishui, my main non-hualian ship for this novel

4. mu qing; he did NOTHING wrong except have a bad attitude, since when is that a crime!!! (this is not serious analysis, please don't @ me with your mu qing criticism, i'm too tired for it right now)
