Okay this has recently made its way back onto my dashboard and I have had time to think about this, so enjoy my two cents.

Anjon as the most popular ship makes sense; Angel is marketed as the soft innocent boy, and Jon as the sexual fuck boy. We've established this.

But I also agree, Zuben should be the second most popular. Look at the way they're marketed. Zach is the dark, brooding, mysterious boy. Ruben is the softer, chill boy. Their fans would ship them so hard; they'd give them a grumpy/sunshine dynamic in fanfiction. Also, it's **literally canon** that Ruben and Zach are seen together a lot, are best friends. Would the fandom not see that as ship material?

(I don't imagine Ruben/Angel being a popular ship, because there would be a lot of fans writing fanfiction about the two of them - the twinks in their eyes - hanging out)

What I think happened for them to be the least popular ship, I don't know if someone has said this already but if they have I agree with you, is that the Chorus/Galactic unit did a bit of a purge. Took down a bunch of posts, videos, you name it, so that people wouldn't ship them. So, by the time Saturday opens the phone and looks at it, Zuben is the least popular ship

Ok so I was thinking about like old (I say old but I really mean like wattpad style) fandom culture and remembered this one detail in itgo that I've always thought was weird. Either Zach or Ruben I don't remember who decides to look up fanfiction of them and Anjon is the most popular ship and Zuben is the least popular. Can we talk about how weird that is?

Like Jon and Angel make sense Jon's little person marketing box was to be hot and for lack of better words the sex symbol of the band and Angel's little marketing box was the virgin. The literal Angel of the group. So with old fandom culture that makes sense. You ship the sex one and the soft uwu boy because idk why that's just what happens. Can confirm I've been there done that and gotten my t-shirt.

But the other thing old fandom loves is to have the main ship and then just slap together the remainders into the back up ship for the fandom. Even if there's a shipping square the two left over outside of the main ship are always the second most popular cause they're the background in the main fics. Or what the biggest option is if you like one of the two not in the main ship the most. Again ask me how I know and I'll show you my t shirt. So realistically even if one of the other combinations of the boys was also super super popular because Anjon is the most popular Zuben shouldn't be dead last it just doesn't make sense. Especially considering that Zach's marketing box is emo boy and Ruben's is dream boyfriend which would essentally make their fandom archetypes be the grumpy one and the sunshine. And on top of all of that it is well established that Zach and Ruben have always been the closest out of the four of them and that it's like an established public thing that they're like the bestiest besties out of the group. It's like not mathematically possible for them to be the least favorite as a whole with Anjon being the most popular.

Realistically the way that makes the most sense with my knowledge of fandoms that a lot of preteens/early teens (presumably the target demographic for Saturday when the fanfic search is made) are in should be more like this:

Anjon - like I said it's the sex one and the not sex one there's a lot of bad smut.

Zuben - they're the back up also grumpy sunshine

Angel/Zach - again grumpy sunshine but they don't get the back up ship boost plus direct competition with the main ship

Zach/Jon/Angel - there's always multi shipping for the girlies that wanna have it all and that normally starts before the less popular ships and I feel like because the boys are really good friends in general the poly ships would probably be more popular than they would be in your standard fandom.

Angel/Ruben - the sunshines together a lot of fluffy shit all of Angel's ships are probably at least mildly popular he's the "uwu cinnamon roll" so he's the most popular for shipping.

Zach/Jon - because people like the poly ship they get some side stuff with just them.

Zach/Ruben/Angel - it's like grumpy sunshine+ if zuben was the main ship this would've been 4 instead. People (me included) went feral for this one.

Ruben/Jon - its like the left over ship. People still "write" for it but it's mostly just poly fics of the ot4 ship plus some of just them.

Ot4 (shipping the four of them together)- realistically it could be a little higher depending on the era of the fandom but it's not gonna be much higher than five or six.

The very lowest I genuinely think zuben could get is three. Like it's just not humanly possible for it to be the least popular based on my experience in several fandoms that would've been what I'm guessing the Saturday fandom during canon was like. The math does not math.

I annotated a copy of ITGO for my best friend and I finally finished and gave it to her so I can share some of my favorite notes.

First all the nicknames I gave to Angel throughout the book, here are some of my favorites

- druggie

- Birthday boy

- dumbass

- shortie

- toddler

- child

- other drug related names

Also I did a lot of drawings, specifically I drew 225 individual things throughout the book, that’s more than one drawing every two pages, here are some of my favorite drawings.

Some of these drawings are very self explanatory some of them I just find funny, like the one of the Mona Lisa for when they are looking at art, not in France and definitely not in the Louvre, that one took a long time.

There is like 3 strop waffles in the book but the one above I then added a recipe below it for her.

Overdrive I just thought it would be fun to do an album cover for the song so I did.

The car is at the end of the chapter where Angel gets hit by a car.

There was also serval different songs or song lyrics throughout the book

Also the In This House cover took forever a.) cause that drawing is the size of my thumbnail and b cause it took forever to get an example of a cover…

I felt like this needed its own little space, I had a habit of threatening Geoff or Ruben’s mom all in the form of little knives then…. I got bored and started drawing other things such as a katana, a battle axe, a lightsaber, a nuke, a chu ko nu chu ko nu (an ancient Chinese crossbow), last but not least a flame thrower

Ruben's arc

I'll shut up soon, but I keep thinking about how Ruben is the quiet tragedy in If This Gets Out. There are so many comments about his life that are dropped in and left there.

Like, he was raised by an emotionally abusive narcissist and a father who never stood up for him against her. He went to music camp to please his mom, and makes friends with a guy (Jon) on her orders. Because of this, he ends up in the band formed by Jon's famous father, where he is forced to hide his sexuality when he doesn't want to, and limit his own talent in case he outshines the other band members. He dates a bunch of guys that abuse him the same way his mother did, treating him as something they can use for their own gains, and is (alluded to) SAd or close to it when he's forced to do things for them in order to keep them and their "love".

Then he finally finds something real with the guy he has feelings for (Zach) and Zach immediately freaks out and pulls away, leaving Ruben terrified he's going to lose his whole found family. He's incredibly anxious and afraid because he's spent his whole life being told he's not lovable if he isn't perfect and doing things for other people. Zach (accidentally) calls Ruben ugly in front of the world, while ignoring him (imagine kissing your crush, only to have him pull away, promise to talk then continually cancel your attempts to work through it, and then telling the world they can't see why people would find you attractive!) My heart broke at that part.

Then they finally work things out and he finally gets a moment of happiness, for probably the first time in his life, and abusive people in power (the story of his life) start interfering and separating him and Zach. To add to it, he's been begging to come out so he doesn't have to sneak around and lie and be afraid (which is another layer of trauma) every time he loves someone, and he finally discovers they're never going to let him come out, and he has to sacrifice his own happiness and wellbeing for the band. Then when the band rally around him and try to help him come out anyway, he's literally and figuratively silenced by his abusers, who then take him to court for 'defamation' when all he's doing is finally speaking out about the years of abuse he's endured.

I also found it very smart how the authors juxtapose Zach and Ruben, because most characters view Zach as the people-pleaser, but Ruben has that in common with Zach. The whole book, Ruben allows himself to be silenced and shoved into a corner for the band, allows his literal identity to be denied for the band, gives Zach plenty of grace to work through his bisexuality even when it crosses over into cruelty sometimes, allows his Mom to emotionally abuse him while still buying her property etc... Ruben's toxic trait of people pleasing is called out less than Zach's but it's as much at the heart of his arc as it is Zach's. In a way, two people-pleasers found each other and were so horrified at each other's insistence on neglecting themselves, they managed to convince each other to stand up for themselves. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
