anyways *me ignoring my stannic attack* speaking of tkak ( the delicious uncle nina tsot toxic yuri ) i'm conflicted bc writing it in the old english is kind of impossible to read...but having stas say shit like "gwendolyn, your frock looks rather fetching, particularly the bodice Not That I Was Looking Upon It!" and "alas boys! i am ruined! fetch me the mead so that i may drown my eternal sorrows in it before i throw this cruel wretched form from the bell tower" and "butters you are true ally and kinsman! tucker...may your next meal contain many Poisons" IS SO FUCKIN FUNNY THAT I MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE TO

forgot about jack || eyeless jack & jeff the killer
Tumblr media
tw: smut, 18+, minors dni threesome, double penetration, knife play, freaky demon top, unrealistic sex but what else are you here for be fr
a/n: this may be the silliest plot to a smut i’ve ever written LMAO
“Oh cmon what the fuck is this?!”
Jeff’s voice boomed through out the living room. Jack sat unfazed on the couch, channel surfing on the television. “Something wrong Jeff?” He asked flatly. Jeff was always on one, always mad or triggered about something. It didn’t take a genius to get accustomed to his dramatic antics. Jeff stormed around the couch, blocking Jacks view of the television. He held out a newspaper in his hand.
“New women killers on the rise?! Look at this!” He ordered. His pale finger pointed to an article, Jack quickly gazing over it. He leaned to his right, trying to see the TV past Jeff. “Yes Jeff it is 2024, women can slaughter people just like we do,” Jack replied. He scanned the newspaper again, rolling his non existent eyes. You would’ve thought after him creating Jane and Nina he would’ve gotten a clue. “Nuh uh! They’re not just slaughtering folks EJ. They’re stealing credit for our hard work. Look again!” Jeff exclaimed. He flipped the page, pointing at the headline.
Eyeless Jill is at it again! Farmers lungs stolen!
Jack ripped the newspaper from his hands, rising to his feet. His eyebrows furrowed as he read the article. “What?! Who the actual fuck is Eyeless Jill?” Jack hissed He gripped the newspaper, examining the victims photo. “I took that fuckers kidneys! KIDNEYS! Who the fuck likes lungs? They’re so sour,” He rambled. Jeff crossed his arms, rolling his eyes. “Oh so you only care when it’s your work being stolen. I invented going to sleep,” Jeff grumbled. He couldn’t believe what he was reading.
“We have to do something about this! What kinda sick fuck would spin the narrative? Have they really forgotten about me?” Jack asked, sitting back down on the couch. He felt defeated, forgotten about. Jeff grinned devilishly as he pointed at the author.
“I say we should pay Y/n Y/l/n a little visit, don’t you think so Jacky?”
Both Jack and Jeff stood ominously in the shadows, admiring your house. “This house will look better burned to the ground,” Jeff muttered. He was salty about his article, or in better words, lack of one. Jane had stolen the front cover. “I want to see the bitch first,” Jack grumbled. He led the way, sliding into your living room window. Unlocked. Typical. Your house was further away from town. Jack thought humans were smarter than this. As he walked into your living room he concluded he was wrong.
Your small television played an old sitcom, the laugh track playing in the background as Jeff followed him. Jack signaled for him to check the kitchen, gesturing his head. Jeff stood still. “EJ I don’t think now is the time for a snack,” He whispered. Jack had to restrain himself from face palming. “Check the kitchen you dumbass,” He ordered. Jeff’s eyes narrowed. “Since when do I take orders from you? We-” He began, the blinding light of a flashlight diminishing their debate.
There you stood, a short satin baby blue nightgown barely covering your chest and thighs. Your innocent appearance almost made Jack falter, until he remembered the newspaper article. You didn’t seem to be armed and even if you were, Jack easily towered over you. “Holy shit you guys are real?” You gasped. You were clutching your cross necklace for dear life, the men exchanging looks. “Obviously we’re real! You’re obsessed with replacing us with women!” Jeff said. Jack sighed, yanking the newspaper out of his hoodie. He shoved it in front of you, your eyes bewildered with terror as he towered over you.
“See this? What the fuck is an Eyeless Jill?” He hissed. You skimmed the article, recognizing your own writing. “You do realize you guys are urban legends right? Not celebrities?! I didn’t even think you guys existed,” You argued. Somehow the pale killer without eyelids and eyeless demon didn’t seem to faze you, your temperament hot. “Well we do, we’re right here,” Jeff huffed. He crossed his arms, glaring at you. “So Eyeless Jill and Jane don’t exist then but you guys do?” You asked. Jack glanced at Jeff, who was not so subtly trying to signal him to not reveal Jane’s existence. “Well Jane does exist but that was Jeff’s kill,” Jack said. He smirked under his mask, paying Jeff back for his stupidity.
“Is she with you guys or?” You asked, glancing behind them. Jeff could have ripped a chunk of his hair out from irritation. “No she’s not with us! You should be honored to be in our presence you stupid slut!” Jeff spat. Jack noticed the subtle rubbing of your thighs, but pretended not to. “See right here it says go to sleep on the wall, Jane’s catch phrase is don’t go to sleep you won’t wake up,” Jack explained, pointing to the picture. You murmured an ‘oh’, studying the photograph. “Hello?! EJ stop simping and let’s get on with torching the place,” Jeff bellowed. You looked at Jeff, the pale killer losing his temper. “You guys want to burn down my house?” You questioned.
Jack shrugged, Jeff’s hand flying to his forehead. “It’s not my problem Jane does headlining kills and you don’t,” You argued. Aggressively you went to launch yourself at Jeff, the eyeless demon grabbing you and restraining you. “Oh and by the way i’m not simping. If I was her panties would be on the floor by now,” Jack told him. You thrashed under his grasp, desperate slap Jeff. “Oh please. If she’s going to drop her panties for either of us it would be me,” Jeff argued. Jack set you aside, stepping up to his partner in crime. “You’re always so cocky and i’ll never understand why. You think that pasty dick of yours could ever even compete with mine?” Jack snarled. Jeff gave him a cold smile, “I know it could.”
“Thats not what Jane said,” Jack debated. Jeff’s cockiness fell. “YOU FUCKED JANE?” He questioned. Quietly you slid on top of your kitchen table, your feet dangling as you watched the argument continue. “I did and i’ll go ahead and let you know she told me i’m better than you,” Jack informed him, mockingly patting his shoulder. Jeff let out a dramatic gasp. “We fucked when I was like fifteen that absolutely does not count,” Jeff hissed. Jack crossed his arms. “Oh really? Is there another girl we’ve both fucked that you’d like to ask?” Jack questioned. It was then the boys gaze landed on you, your perky nipples showing through your thin nightgown.
You gulped nervously, watching the two tall killers stride towards you. “You know she is a pretty one,” Jack murmured. He reached his hand out, stroking your jaw with his fingertips. You were practically shaking with fear and arousal. “No reason why we can’t share her, then have her tell us who’s better,” Jeff purred. Jack inhaled deeply, the smell of your arousal flooding his nostrils. He grinned mischievously under his mask. “I think she likes it when we talk about her like she isn’t here,” Jack informed Jeff. You rubbed your thighs together anxiously, looking up at the two men.
The demon brought his thumb to your lower lip, dragging it down slowly. Instinctively you opened your mouth, sucking on his thumb. Jack smirked as Jeff rounded the table, climbing onto it and placing himself behind you. Jack lowered himself to his knees, spreading your thighs. Removing his thumb from your mouth, you shared a look of lust. “Such a tiny little thing,” Jeff snickered. His pale hands explored your chest, sliding the straps of your nightgown down your shoulders and arms. Your breast were exposed to the cool night air, Jeff’s fingertips on them in a flash.
His touch was cold, Jack’s warm. “Why don’t you remove your mask Jacky, let the whore see what she’s letting fuck her?” Jeff asked. Jack slid off his royal blue mask, the demon staring up at him. Oozing black tar dripped from his eye sockets, coating his lower eyes. You shuddered at the sight, Jeff pinching your nipples. You gasped, a smile creeping across Jacks lips. Rows of razor sharp teeth revealed themselves behind his curled lips. “Scared yet?” Jeff taunted, his breath hot against your ear. Jack placed sloppy open mouth kisses to your thighs, his large hands keeping your thighs pried apart.
“Not in the slightest,” You lied boldly. Jeff snickered, sliding his knife out of his pocket. Jack nuzzled himself to your cunt, one of his tongues licking a stripe through the skimpy silk that was your panties. The pale killer brought the blade to your throat, the metal cool against your skin. You swallowed, fear and lust washing over you. “You’re fucking pathetic, letting us play with you. You’re scared now, aren’t you whore?” Jeff huffed. You could feel his boner poke you from behind, the sight of Jacks three black tongues making you shudder in fear. He pulled your panties to the side, watching you intently. He slowly slid one of them into your drenched cunt, another one toying with your clit.
You moaned, one of your hands flying to Jacks hair. The blade of the knife pressed against your throat harder, causing you to squeal. “Answer me bitch, you’re scared aren’t you?” Jeff hissed. You wanted to nod, the knife restricting you. Your hips desperately moved on their own, grinding against Jacks tongues. It was then you felt another one slide inside of you, curling upwards. “Fuck yes, i’m scared, but it feels so good,” You groaned. Jeff brought his knife down to your nipples, using the sharp tip to play with your nipples. Jacks tongues were curling upwards to hit your g spot, a knot forming inside of your stomach.
“Awe really? Does Jacky make you feel good?” Jeff asked tauntingly. He dragged the blade to your other nipple, poking at your sensitive buds. “Y-yes, so fucking good,” You moaned. Your fingers were yanking at his brown curls, your eyes fluttering shut from the pleasure. You were pathetically grinding against his face, your orgasm getting closer and closer. “Awe is someone gonna cum? For two killers? How filthy,” Jeff purred. He nibbled at your earlobe, your sinful noises bouncing off of the walls.
“C-c-cumming!” You stuttered, Jacks one last flick at your clit sending you over the edge. You could feel the thinnest line of blood forming across your neck, your thighs squeezing around Jacks head as you came down from your high. Jack slowly emerged from your cunt, a devious grin spread across his lips. “You taste so fucking good,” He panted. He rose to his feet, admiring your exposed figure. “You’re lucky I want to fuck you, otherwise i’d eat those pretty organs,” Jack purred. The boys rearranged you, Jack laying flat on the kitchen table. Jeff guided you to crawl on top of him, your ass in the air as you positioned yourself on all fours. Jack grinned as you met his gaze.
“With how big I am it’s better that I take your cunt,” Jack explained. You whimpered as you heard the clinking of both the boys belts. “I-I’ve never-” You stuttered, shaking with nerves. Jeff’s large hands grasped your ass, massaging the skin harshly. “We know doll, we’re making you our personal slut,” Jeff chuckled darkly. Jack guided his cock to your cunt, collecting your slick on his tip. He gave you a small smile. “This may hurt a little bit,” He warned. You grabbed onto his hoodie, your core throbbing in desire as Jack began to push himself into you. A mixture of moans and whines escaped your lips, your eyes screwed shut.
“There you go, you can take it,” Jack purred. He could hear your heartbeat speed up, the sound pleasurable to his ears. You felt Jeff spit on your other puckered hole, your knuckles turning pale from gripping Jack so hard. Once Jack bottomed out you felt Jeff’s finger teasing your other hole. You felt like you were being split in half by Jacks cock alone, the idea of taking Jeff’s unimaginable. “You’re so fucking tight,” Jack growled, his noises sounding animalistic. Jeff shoved a finger inside of your unexplored hole, a gasp being ripped out of your throat. “I’d start fucking her Jacky, she’s gonna be in the world of pain,” Jeff suggested.
Jack began to slowly move, his cock slowly exiting your dripping cunt. “Such a breedable cunt,” Jack muttered. His large hands grabbed the sides of your stomach, his cock returning to your cunt and brushing against your g spot. “Fuck, please go faster fucking please,” You pleaded. Who was Jack to deny you of that? Jack began to fuck you quickly, his hips snapping into yours. Jeff curled his finger inside of your other hole, the pain subsiding as Jack abused your cunt. “Thats a good fucktoy. Just be a babbling begging slut for us,” Jeff snickered. A sharp slap landed on your ass, causing an electric shock to shoot down your spine. Jeff inserted another finger, his patience thinning.
Watching Jack fuck you in front of him was too erotic, his cock twitching with urgency. The pale killer removed his fingers, spitting on your puckered hole again. “This may hurt, a lot,” He warned, smirking to himself as you whimpered. Jeff began pushing himself inside of you, your vision seeing stars. Your vision became spotty, strings of whimpers and moans escaping your lips. Your eyes were screwed shut, Jeff focused on bottoming out. You felt dizzy, a large hand cupping your face. Jacks touch was warm, the demon bringing his lips to yours. The kiss was unexpected, your body beginning to relax as he tenderly kissed you.
“Yeah that’s right, kiss her before I turn her mouth into my personal cum dump,” Jeff grunted. Your walls were spasming around the both of them, your body being pushed to its limits. Your eyes fluttered open, your vision still hazy as you groaned into Jacks mouth. Both of them began moving in unison, opposing the other’s pace. “Holy shit,” You cried. You felt so full, the killers having the time of their lives abusing your holes. “Fuck, you’re coming home with us. I need to breed you. Every fucking day,” Jack grunted. An animalistic growl was boiling in the bottom of his throat, his thrust becoming more intense.
His filthy words only made you clench around him tighter. Your sounds were uncontrollable, your body beginning to shake as they fucked you senseless. “Fuck fuck fuck, feels so- mmph!” You whined. You could feel the cord inside of you tightening again, the boys large hands holding your body up. “Such a pathetic whore. You gonna cum on our dicks?” Jeff taunted. You nuzzled your face into Jacks neck, your thighs violently shaking as you came around his cock. Your walls milking Jack sent him over the edge, his seed painting your inner walls with one final thrust. Jeff reached over, grabbing a handful of your hair and yanking you towards him. He relished in the whimpers of pain that escaped your lips, the killer tugging at the roots of your scalp as he came inside of your other hole.Jeff released your scalp, the three of you panting in unison as you came down from your highs.
\/
You stood in between Jack and Jeff, arms crossed. “Was this absolutely necessary?” You questioned. Jeff was practically bouncing with joy, your beloved farm house now engulfed in flames. You all watched as the flames spread further and further across the building. “I told you it would look better burnt down. I was right,” Jeff gleamed. You frowned, your baby blue nightgown barely covering your exposed skin as a night breeze blew past. “So where exactly am I supposed to go now?” You asked. Jeff carelessly tossed his handful of matches aside, throwing them into the fire. Jack followed suit, tossing his can of gasoline into the large flames.
“Didn’t you hear me? You’re coming home with us. You’ll never forget our names again.”

TW: Homophobia/ Homophobic Slur Used / Transcript / AN under the cut
AN: Thought I'd add a tiny tidbit of lore I decided to create for the Villareal's for this story. I've actually never played with this household before, so I when I read their bio I was like hmmm! Interesting!
Vanessa would be Jacques Villareal's eldest daughter from his first marriage. He would later have Hugo, Luna and Max from his second marriage to his wife that "suddenly disappeared.
Transcript:
Geoffrey: Nancy?
Nancy: [whimpers] Why the fuck did I do that...why the fuck did I do that...
[bathroom door swings open]
Nina: Nancy?
Nina: [knocks on stall door] Hey! You didn’t hear us calling you? Why you run off like that?
Dina: We saw you, you know. Bumping and grinding on Geoffrey. SO hot, right!
Nina: [giggles] Oh yeah, they were really getting into it! I had a feeling you were into him. That’s such a relief.
Dina: Seriously. People were...starting to talk, right, Nina?
Nina: Oh, totally. Everyone was calling you Angela 2.0. Ugh, that was such a fucking mess. She was like sooo obsessed with Vanessa, always hanging around her and touching her and being so freaking weird.
Dina: And poor Vanessa. Everyone was starting to get the wrong idea about her. She’s not like that, you know. She’s not a d***.
Nancy Narrates: [There is was. That word again....]
[Is that what they think? That I’m-]
Nancy: [whispers] I’m not like that either...
Nina: It just doesn’t always look that way, you know? Two girls hugging on each other, holding hands and sleeping in bed together? It’s weird, Nancy...
Dina: Right? [laughs] I’d die if a girl touched me like that! [shudders] So gross!
Nina: But if you say you’re not then we’ll believe you, I guess. Look, we’re going back to the party. Want us to wait for you?
Nancy: [shakes head] I’ll catch up later..
Nancy Narrates: [I’m not... like that...I’m not. I’m not like that. I’m not. I’m not a-]
Vanessa: [sniffles] Can we leave? Please? I don’t feel good. Maybe it’s my period or something...I just want to go home.
Nancy: Alright.
Vanessa: [whispers] Can I ask you something?
Nancy: [softly] Mhm.
Vanessa: Was that your first kiss?
Nancy: [hesitates] No. Was it yours?
Vanessa: No.
Vanessa: [sleepily] Nancy?
Nancy: Yes?
Vanessa: I think you should be with Geoffrey.
Nancy Narrates: [If this is what it takes to be a normal girl-]
Geoffrey: [breathlessly] W- What did you say?
Nancy: I said, I think I have a crush on you and I want to be with you.
Geoffrey: W-with me? Really? You want me?
Nancy: [softly] I want you so much.: W-with me? Really? You want me?
Nancy Narrates: [Then shouldn’t I at least try]
Winter 1991 - The Students of Paradise prepare to leave their cozy, luxury dorms to visit their families for winter break.
Bob: Pipe down, Little Guy! I’m surprised he’s made it this far inside the dorms without getting caught.
Geoffrey: [chuckles] Just a few more hours and he’ll be able to run around my family’s cabin in Granite Falls.
Cassie: I didn’t see you pack a bag, Nance. Are you going home for winter break?
Nancy: Um. No, I’m going to stay. The holidays are kind of rough back home...
Geoffrey: I told her my mom would love for her to come visit. She’s dying to see Nancy again now that we’re going steady.
Nancy: Guess I didn’t want to be a bother, that’s all.
Geoffrey: You could never be a bother. Not to me.
Bob: [chuckles] Man, how are you two lovebirds going to survive being apart the whole break?
Dina: So, I’m visiting Don’s family back in Tartosa while you skanks freeze your asses off. Sucks being single.
Nina: [rolls eyes] Yeah, thanks for leaving me to deal with our crazy mother. What are you doing for break, VV?
Vanessa: Hmm..
Nina: Hellooo? Earth to VV? I said, what are the Villareal’s planning for holiday break?
Vanessa: [sighs] My dad is spending it with his new wife. I’m staying here.
Dina: You’re spending Christmas all alone? That sucks..

Bad Cats!!! [Yandere Andrew Graves x female reader]
Tumblr media
Warning ⚠️: yandere tendencies, alternate universe, ruining dates, will add more latter, this is short.
A/n: to those who harassed the creator of the intentionally disturbing and grosse horror game, I wish a big ol' FUCK YOU.
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
If you were honest with yourself, this was your fault. Though you shouldn't beat yourself up about it, you should be surprised by the other hand.
From either of your cats, you expected this from Ashley, but Andrew attacking your date? Makes you really think.
Your date didn't like it one bit and stormed out of your apartment. You obviously did chase after them to check if they were okay, and then got rejected in a hurtful way, too. Calling you a future cat lady who's gonna die old and alone.
To say your attraction for them instantly dropped to a -1000 was an understatement. You'd understand if they left because they were allergic or something, but insulting any cat lady and saying you were gonna die old and alone simply because you have two cats was just a jackass thing to do.
Flopping on your couch face first, you groan into the cushions in frustration. It's been so long since you had a date that went well, and a good fuck too.
"Meow."
You lift your head up to see Andrew sitting in front of you. The cat leans down and licks your face. Sitting up, you lift Andrew to your eye level.
"I should be mad at you. However, you did save me from what possibly could've been." Andrew just rubs his face on yours just for some more affection.
"Hehe! That's enough. Let's get you something to eat." Those words were like some form of a summon because Ashley appeared on your shoulder without any sound.
You went into the kitchen and poured some food into their bowls, and went to grab something for yourself from the fridge.
While sitting at the dining table, you contemplate if you should make a phone call or not.
Oh, what the hell you planned to sleep in anyway.
You immediately call your friend to tell her how it went.
"It didn't go good, did it?"
"Well gee, Nina! What do you think about how it went?!" Irritated with her instant and correct assumption, you use a sarcastic reply.
"Alright! Tell me what happened."
Much better.
"It was going well at first. I was feeling it. They were feeling it, too."
"Get to the point."
"Getting there. But when we got to my place, Andrew wasn't feeling it." You hear her laughing in amusement over the phone.
"I'm serious! He attacked them, and then they said some real out of pocket stuff to me."
She's still laughing.
"I'm sorry, Andrew? Are you sure it wasn't Ashley?"
Alright, just because they were both black cats, it didn't mean you couldn't tell the difference between them. You told her that a million times.
"If you're just gonna laugh, then I'll hang up."
"Sorry! Sorry. I just didn't expect it."
You sigh. "Whatever."
"Listen, let's talk tomorrow, I'm going to bed early."
"Alright." You hang up.
"Should've called Julia instead."
You jolt in surprise when you see Andrew sitting on the table, staring at you. "We talked about this." Actually, you talked, were either of them listening or not was a mystery. You place him on the floor and put your empty dishes in the dishwasher and decide you should call it a night and head to bed.
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Once, Andrew was sure you were deep asleep. He changed into his human form and crawled in bed with you.
"You should've seen your face, Andy, I was so sure you were gonna claw their eyes out." Ashley, who was still in her cat form, spoke.
"Why are you still here?" Andrew whispered irritatedly.
"Oh, come on, I'm living the life of luxury. Why should I leave?" Andrew just rolled his eyes at his sister's excuse, but he knew she'd rather eat glass than admit that she got attached to you.
Deciding to ignore her, Andrew continued to cuddle up to you.
"Aww, you stiw angwy youw giwfwiend bwout someone ewse home?" Now that wasn't needed.
"Shut up."

A MISTAKE | KAZ BREKKER
Summary: Imagine doing an unsuccessful heist and Kaz taking it out on you.
Tumblr media
The heist hadn't gone as planned. It was no one's fault, you had just been incredibly unlucky, but Kaz was still enraged at everyone and looking for a guilty one, accusing everyone on their turn before you stepped in.
"Kaz, stop it." You sighed, wrapping your arms around yourself. "We could have done nothing otherwise. Sometimes these things happen, it isn't anyone's fault. You made a brilliant plan, we all tried to follow it-"
"No," Kaz grumbled, glaring at you in turn. "A mistake like this can't happen without someone taking responsibility. You weren't much of an use either, or what were you doing there at the hallway when guards were rushing towards us? We could have hid, but you gave us away before we could. I blame you all the same for this failure!" He shouted, his eyes flashing dangerously.
Your face dropped at Kaz's words and you took a step back from him. His hands clenched around his cane as he glared at you.
"I didn't do anything wrong," you mumbled, trying to hold his gaze.
He snorted and turned away from you. "Yes, you did. This wasn't your first job, so why the hell did you think you could get away with going solo there?!"
You rolled your eyes, clenching your jaw. "I had to! They could have reached us and killed us all if I didn't slow them down!"
Kaz scoffed. "If you would have followed the plan, we could have had an opportunity to hide!"
"No," you shook your head quickly. "They knew exactly where we were, they would have surrounded us and either imprisoned us or killed us! For your information, I saved our lives so thank you so much for your fucking gratitude!"
"Kaz, they're right, we could have-" Jesper tried to intervene but Kaz interrupted him.
"This is between me and them, keep your mouth shut!" Kaz growled.
"Hey, let's just all take some time to calm down." Wylan murmured as he carefully approached you but Kaz still hadn't stopped.
"You're of no use," he snarled at you. "We don't need people like you during heists, maybe you should take up the broom instead or stay in your room, out of sight."
"Kaz!" Inej scolded him while the rest of the Crows stood dumbfounded, staring at Kaz in shock.
Your eyes became glossy, tears threatening to spill over. But Kaz still didn't seem to care. So you turned around and sprinted towards the Slat, letting the cold wind bite your face as your tears finally began cascading over your cheeks.
The Crows stood there for a while, seeing you disappearing to the crowd. Then they all laid disappointed looks at Kaz.
"Happy now?" Nina sighed and started walking faster, with no doubt of wanting to offer a listening ear for your once again broken heart.
They all knew you both had feelings for each other, but you didn't deserve to be treated like this by him. Kaz was usually cool and collected, but his conflicted feelings for you merged with frustration was never pretty to watch. But this was something worse than your usual bickerings, and Inej noticed the slight flash of regret in Kaz's eyes. He hid it incredibly well, but it was still there. She'd pop by his window in the morning and talk him into apologising to you like so many times before - you deserved to know he still cared about you, even when you had fights like these. She was just concerned about how many fights would you take before giving up on him...
---
Inej's presence floated in the air early in the morning. Sun had barely risen, and Kaz had once again stayed awake the whole night. You had usually made him sleep a little, even take a nap. Telling him his brains would be able to work harder if he slept and he wouldn't feel so frustrated.
But yesterday, from obvious reasons, you hadn't come to talk him into going into bed for a little while. It had felt weird, but Kaz knew the reason. Nina had taken food with her at the evening and headed towards your room, laying a glare at Kaz as she passed him but didn't say anything.
Kaz had sensed Inej long before the shadow passed his desk and Inej's soft steps approached him.
"Kaz," she sighed. "You owe them an apology."
Kaz ignored her. "What time is it?"
"Early."
"Is anyone else awake yet? We need to start working on a new plan."
"No. We need to talk about your fight yesterday with a certain Dreg."
"Why?" Kaz asked, irritated.
"When will you go and apologise to them?"
"There's nothing to apologise for."
"You had them cry in Nina's arms for an hour. Nina had to help them to fall asleep. So yes, you do have something to apologise for."
"It's fine, Inej."
"I'm serious, Kaz."
"They'll get over it."
"If you want them to hate you forever."
"They already hate me," Kaz muttered.
Inej sighed, staring at Kaz for a moment. Kaz ignored her accusatory look and just continued working with the plan. Suddenly, Inej's hand appeared on his way.
"Saints, Kaz!" she exclaimed suddenly and Kaz's eyes met hers for the first time today. "You need to think about their feelings for once."
"I don't have time to think about whether someone gets hurt from things I say, in the Barrel, you have to be tough and if you aren't, you're screwed." He huffed.
Inej sighed. "We all know you care about them more than you care about the rest of us. We know you have feelings for them."
Kaz paused then, letting a long breath through his nose. "I don't have feelings for them."
"You do. We all have seen how you look at each other. Nina has heard your heart when you look at them. You both are just so stubborn and won't act for it. It's getting ridiculous."
"It's not like that."
"You say it's not like that, but still everything points the other way."
"You don't know what you're talking about," Kaz growled, his fingers tapping the desk.
Inej groaned. "Kaz, you know you want to go to apologise. Swallow your pride for once.."
He huffed. "Dirtyhands being soft for someone doesn't fit the picture."
Inej laughed and rolled her eyes. "I know that while living in the Barrel and being a crime boss, it's necessary. But I know you. This is just petty, and you don't want to lose them. Go apologise. Or I'll drag you there."
Kaz looked at Inej for a moment longer before he took a big breath in and stood up. "Fine," he grumbled, "I'll go talk to them."
---
Kaz didn't know how long exactly he had stood in front of your room. He couldn't help but think that you would be too angry at him to speak - and Inej's claim of you having feelings for him.
It wasn't possible. Kaz's feelings for you were hardly possible, so yours would be even less. And you'd deserve someone better than him anyway.
Kaz tried to convince himself of this, but a little voice echoed at the back of his head.
What if they do like you back?
He stared at your door for a moment longer before finally bringing himself to knock.
A groan was heard and then your groggy voice, "Coming..."
The door opened and Kaz's heart started to beat faster the moment he saw you. You squinted your eyes at the light and when you recognised him, your expression immediately transformed into a scowl.
"What do you want?" you snapped, your hands on your hips and your hair messy from sleep.
Kaz opened his mouth but then shut it again. You were angry, he was sorry but he didn't know how to word it. He sighed.
"I thought we should talk this through," he finally said, taking a step forward.
You didn't say anything and just stared at him for a moment. "Oh, mighty Dirtyhands wants to talk now."
Kaz groaned and was quiet for a moment. "I owe you... an apology."
"I don't want to hear it," you said and attempted to slam the door shut, but Kaz got his cane between it and pushed himself inside to your room.
"We need to talk," Kaz said, moving his cane into your way again. "And I won't leave until we do."
"Stop that," you snapped.
"Why?"
"Because I'm trying to be mad at you."
Kaz bit back a smile at that. "If you want to be mad at me, you need to have a proper reason for it."
You huffed and crossed your arms. "Fine, then talk."
Kaz sighed and laid his gaze on his hands gripping the cane. "What I said last night was needless and inconsiderate. I..." He clenched his jaw and cast his eyes downwards for a moment, and then met your eyes again and continued. "I apologise for it."
He glanced up at you, expecting to still see your anger, but instead, your expression was confused.
"Well, I wasn't expecting that."
Kaz smirked at your confusion. "I know how to be an asshole, but I'm trying to be a good boss, too."
You chuckled. "I've gotten used to you being an asshole even when I know you care about me- care about us, I mean, so... it's weird to hear you apologise."
Kaz huffed with a small smile, his heart thudding. He smiled at you, and you were smiling too, and he felt his heart jump at that.
"Have you slept at all last night?" you asked him.
Kaz shook his head. "No. I had work."
You sighed and rolled your eyes. "Work can wait, you go have a nap right now."
You opened the door for him, and you began ascending the stairs together. Kaz smirked at your order. "And if I won't?"
You laughed. "I'll knock you out and drag you to bed. Your call."

Can I request a headcanon of Andrew and Ashley x doting and kind older sister reader? how would they affect Andrew and Ashley's dynamic? would they cling onto her and heavily depend on her?
This is my first time requesting anything on Tumblr ever so I'm sorry if it's not detailed enough! 😊
note from coff-in: thank you so much for requesting! i hope this was to your liking... looking back at it now i wish i added more of andrew's and ashley's thoughts and feelings about the [reader] in here. i also tried by best to keep their relationship platonic/neutral, just in case you didn't want to read about any incest. if incest's what you want, though, let me know through another ask or a comment in the notes! i'm always willing to oblige!
[fem] reader-insert, [reader] is older than andrew by about 2 years
I'll be the shade to protect you from the sun's harsh rays.
Big sis [reader] Graves would most likely struggle with caring for her younger siblings, Andy and Leyley. She loves her siblings, of course, but it is a struggle being the parent for them.
She’d read stories to them and draw with them and do her best to take care of them. Things that their mother should be doing with them… but oh well.
I think a big sis [reader] would probably try to encourage Andy and Leyley to be more independent from her and also each other. It might've worked on Andy but Leyley would still be very clingy to her siblings.
Speaking of a clingy Leyley, she would probably not be as clingy towards Andy since she has her big sister [reader]; who’s always kind and sweet and attentive to her! She and Andy are her best friends! She doesn’t need anyone else… and they don’t need anyone else but her either.
So yeah… Nina still dies. It would still happen initially between Andy and Leyley but big sis [reader] would have found out and panicked. She helps Andy and Leyley bury the body in the park (or wherever they buried her) and they still make the blood pact, although it’s a little different.
Ashley doesn’t tell a soul what happened that day, Andy doesn’t look at anyone else but her and their big sister [reader], and [reader] pretends that she didn’t hear her little siblings kill and hide a dead girl. Speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil!
As they get older big sis [reader] does her best to financially support her siblings. Most of the money she gets from any job she works goes to her siblings to get them gifts and treats. She tries her best to celebrate both Andy and Leyley’s birthdays… even if Leyley’s birthday wishes are concerning to her.
Big sis [reader] may be more of a doormat and pushover than Andrew is. She loves her siblings and would probably delude herself to some extent that Andrew’s touchiness and overprotectiveness of his sisters are normal. Just like him sleeping in their beds after having a nightmare is normal…
Ashley being rude to other girls and boys is also normal! She’s just not used to having other friends so maybe she’s being rude as some form of anxiety… and her constantly requiring attention from her big siblings is fine, she’s their baby sister after all!
She stays with Ashley after Andrew goes off to college. Big sis [reader] would’ve gone to college herself but couldn’t bear to leave her little siblings at home with their not-so-great parents. She saved up her money to help pay for Andrew’s tuition and classes.
Once the Graves siblings end up in quarantine, big sis [reader] mostly just kind of vibes with her siblings. I mean, they’re with each other 24/7 now so she’s able to give her undivided attention towards them. Andrew and Ashley revel in this of course.
I can see big sis [reader] eating smaller portions of meals so that her little siblings can have more food for later because that’s the kind of thing a kind big sister does! Andrew and Ashley notice this. Their wonder big sister is starving herself for them! It makes their hearts ache to see her do this…
… so when they kill the cultist and prepare him for a tasty meal, it’s obvious to them that their big sister [reader] gets the first bite!
I’m kinda running out of steam for this sort of neutral look because you can take this scenario down so many different paths! Maybe their relationship could be one-sided; as Andrew and Ashley start growing up they start seeing all of big sis [reader]’s kind gestures and doting in a more romantic light, but to [reader] Andy and Leyley will always be her little siblings.
Maybe Andrew could use big sis [reader] as a sort of weapon against Ashley during the Decay route? Who knows? I currently haven’t thought about a Decay route like that too much, but it is a neat idea to think and fantasize about.

Tumblr media
“Hey,” Nina didn’t bother knocking as she stepped into your room, “There’s someone here to see you.”
You looked up from your small desk, “Who?”
Nina shrugged, “Wouldn’t say, but she won't leave until she speaks with you.”
You frowned, getting to your feet and following after Nina. A million possibilities ran through your mind as you descended the stairs, you didn’t know many people from Ketterdam, or you didn’t know anyone that Kaz also didn’t know. WHo had come to speak to you was a complete mystery to you and judging by the way the Crows were gathered at the bottom of the stairs, it was a mystery to them too.
“Who is she?” Jesper broke the heavy silence first.
You rolled your eyes, “How am i supposed to know, Jes?”
Walking past him and the others you looked for the woman. There were a few dregs hanging around in the slat, like always. Hiding from the damp Ketterdam air or filling in their afternoons with ale and gambling. It meant the woman stuck out like a sore thumb. When you finally saw her, your blood ran cold.
“Oh, my,” The woman stepped forward, she grabbed your hands and smiled at you, “Look how grown up you are, my dear.”
She pulled you into a hug, an awkward show of affection that she had never done before.
“Mother.”
She hadn’t changed in the 7 or so years since you saw her last, a few graying hairs and wrinkles around her eyes were the only evidence time had passed. She still wore the same turquoise dress, the fabric stained and dirty where it spent too many years dragging on the dirt. She had tied a knitted shawl around her shoulders, to stave off the cold of the barrel and to make herself look more presentable. When you were a child on the farm with your parents, your mother would refuse to do any of the hard labor or household duties, always dressed in her ‘fine’ clothes and sitting by a window like the queen of Ravka.
You hated her for it then, the way she forced you to conduct her duties. The hard labor with your father on the farm, the chores inside the home, raising your three younger siblings. Looking at the woman before you now, you hated her just as much.
“What do you want, mother?” You forced out through gritted teeth.
The woman batted your hand she still held, a sharp smack to chide you for your tone, “Is that how you speak to the woman who raised you?”
She didn’t raise you though. Your father was the one who taught you everything you knew, cared and loved you. The marriage of your parents had been of convenience, a rich farmer up the road had fallen on hard times so he married off his only daughter to your father. Something neither of them wanted.
When your father had died suddenly in a farming accident, your mother had sold you to slavers, without a second thought. You had spent years in Ketterdam trying to bury the memories of your younger brothers screaming for you to stay, the chains that chaffed and burnt your skin and the cruel men who didn’t care about anything but making coins.
Standing with your mother before you, her soft hands gripping you so tightly, you felt like a young girl all over again. Begging for affection from a woman who hated your existence, cursed to always be nothing to her. You could still remember the beatings and the screaming, the bruises that you tried to hide and the permanent split in your lip which took years to properly heal.
Kaz was watching the whole encounter, quiet and calculating like he always was. The other crows were growing concerned, there was an air of uncertainty that settled over them all.
“What can we help you with?” Kaz finally spoke, he stepped closer to you, towering over your mother. Having him at your side brought you ease, a feeling of calm that always came over you when he was near. Kaz was prepared for anything, he always looked out for you and the crows.
“And you are?” Your mother snapped, glaring at Kaz.
Kaz didn’t seem bothered, “Are you here for something? Or to terrorize your daughter?”
You glanced back at Kaz, he had a look of pure rage in his eyes. You hadn’t told Kaz the details of your past, but he knew your mother sold you to slavers. You realized suddenly you didn’t want to be in the middle of Kaz and your mother fighting.
You grabbed your mothers arm, dragging her away from the gathered Crows and Kaz’s glower and pulling her outside. In the Ketterdam air things were immediately colder, you hadn’t grabbed your coat so you could feel it even more.
“What are you doing here?” You demanded.
“Can I not come see my daughter?”
“You never cared before, I didn’t even know you knew this is where I lived. You sold me to slavers,” You cried, stepping away as you started to get upset. “What in Sankta Alina could you want?”
“I am married,” Your mother boasted, “He lives in the Zelver district, we want you to come have dinner.”
You were reeling, so much information was thrown at you all at once. You gapped to answer.
“Your brothers will be there too,” Your mother waved her hand like she was dismissing your concerns, “They stayed on the farm.”
“Why- why do you want me there?”
“To make amends, my love,” She took your hands again, “It is time we act like a family again. Perhaps you could bring that guard dog of yours, act civilized.”
You wanted to say yes, straight away you wanted to say yes and trust that she had true intentions. But there was something nagging in your mind.
“Who is it that you're married to, mother?”
“A Merchant, trades with the Ravkan crown, Alexei Berezin.”
You recognized the name immediately, he had one of the largest mansions in the Zelver district, rivaled only by foreign dignitaries. He had brought in a large shipment of Ravkan gold and silk, Kaz had stolen half of it almost immediately, because Berezin had thought himself untouchable.
“When's dinner?” You forced out, trying not to let your knowledge of the man show.
“Tomorrow, be there by seven.”
She wandered away, slipping into the crowd of foot traffic and joining the mess of colours.
--
“Alexei Berezin.”
You forced a smile, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
The man looked over you and Kaz like you were nothing, he grunted in greeting and disappeared towards the drinks cart.
You looked at Kaz, “Too late to leave?”
Kaz smiled, it made him look softer somehow, “We don’t have to stay long, let's hope Inej and Wylan are quick.”
A servant greeted you as you walked further into the drawing room, she offered you and Kaz wine in crystal glasses. You had played being rich at banquets and galas before, it was easy to hide in a crowd of rich people to steal from them, but here holding the crystal glass made you feel so exposed. The only thing that was stopping you from running out the door was Kaz by your side. He always looked out for you, tonight would be no different.
Your mother had lied, your brothers were not at the dinner. She had spun some more lies about how they hadn't been able to make the journey but you wondered if they were even invited in the first place. You, Kaz, your mother and her new husband all sat at the ridiculously long table, eating silently except for a few forced comments.
“So,” Berezin belched, downing his fourth glass of brandy, “Mr Brekker, how is business?”
Kaz looked at you from across the table, “As good as yours, Berezin.”
Berezin snared, “So then you admit to taking my shipment?”
“A shipment?” Kaz leant back, starting to enjoy the game.
Berezin started getting red in the face, rage barely contained in his eyes, “You know exactly what I’m talking about, Dirty Hands.”
A smile ghosted across Kaz’s face, “Is this why you extended the invite, Berezin? Hoping to get your silks back?”
You jumped when Berezin slammed his fist on the table, he stood abruptly, his chair falling backwards loudly, “You listen to me here boy! You will pay me back what I am owed or I will make your life a living hell!”
“A living hell?”
“You have no idea who you are messing with, you and your little whore will pay-”
Kaz was on his feet faster than you had time to process, “Watch your mouth, Berezin, or silks won't be the only thing you lose.”
Berezin started shouting in rage, his words mostly coming out as jumbled insults and threats which didn’t mean anything for you and Kaz.
“We’re leaving,” You said to your mother, not bothering to bid her a proper goodbye as you joined Kaz’s side and retrieved your coats.
You were both halfway through the foyer when things took a turn.
Somewhere in the garden outside a fire roared to life, a green chemical fire that was Wylan's emergency beacon. Kaz urged you to walk faster, his cane striking loudly against the marble floor as you both tried to leave before Berezin caught on.
“Thief!”
Kaz grabbed your hand, and both of you ran the rest of the way out of the house and down the garden path. Berezin was screaming from inside the house, shouting orders to his few guards and screaming for someone to alert the Stadwatch. You and Kaz didn’t stop running until you reached the canal, skittering to a stop and dropping into the waiting boat. Matthias and Wylan were already there, Wylan was heaving like he had just finished a mad dash too.
“Did you get it?” Kaz demanded as Matthias started to row the boat towards 4th Harbor.
Wylan was nodding, “Handed it off to Inej, she and Jesper are heading to the warehouse now.”
You had to give it to Kaz, when he had explained the plan this morning after all-night scheming, you didn’t think you would be able to pull it off. But yet again, he proved he knew everyone's skills.
The plan was somewhat simple, you and Kaz would entertain Berezin while Wylan posed as a servant and slipped into Berezin's office. Wylan would swipe the key to Berezins safe which sat in his warehouse; it was old and Ravkan, protected by small science. You didn’t have enough time on the first job to try and crack it, so now was the perfect time. The original plan was for you and Kaz to stay all through dinner and whatever other pleasantries were to be had, while Wylan snuck through undetected. His Green fire beacon was a sign he had been caught, so you and Kaz hightailed out before things got too nasty.
 Inej and Jesper were on their way to the safe now, while you, Kaz, Matthias and Wylan drew attention in the opposite direction. Headed towards 4th Harbor meant the four of you could lead the following guards and Stadwatch into the twisting streets and narrow wharves and hopefully escape into the crowd.
As Matthias moored the boat to the side of the canal, you and Wylan climbed out and surveyed where you were.
“Are you alright?” You asked him, still aware of how his hands shook.
Wylan nodded, but you were unconvinced.
Matthias and Kaz climbed out of the boat after you, the four of you standing at the canal edge for a moment while you tried to compose yourselves.
“Hey! Stop right there!”
“Bastards,” Kaz swore, already ushering the three of you to run before they started to shoot.
“Kaz, they're after us, not Wylan and Matthias…” You shouted as you ran down the street alongside the canal, headed towards the Council of the Tides Watchtower.
Kaz ordered everyone to stop, “Y/N’s right, Wylan, Matthias, head back towards the slat, take the long way and check for tails, we’ll go the opposite way.”
Matthias started to argue, “No, we should-”
You all ducked as gunfire echoed through the streets. Bullets ricochet off the cobbles at your feet, dangerously close to hitting one of you.
“Go!” Kaz yelled over the noise, blindly reaching for your hand and pulling you along with him as you headed away from Matthias and Wylan and towards the government district.
You were right, the three or four guards from Berezin's estate followed you, not your friends as you rushed through the dark streets. At this time of the night, the Crow Club and the surrounding area would be buzzing with life, but in this part of town, everyone was shut inside asleep. There weren’t many lights, aside from a few lanterns left on in people's doorways, so as you and Kaz ran you stuck to shadows and unlit alleyways, hoping to lose your stalkers in the maze of buildings.
Kaz pulled you to a stop after running for ten minutes and started to take a toll on him and his leg. The two of you ducked into an alley, Kaz leaned heavily against the wall and his cane, heaving as he regained his breath. You glanced over him, worried that he wouldn’t be able to continue for much longer.
“Maybe we lost them,” You whispered, peaking around the corner to the main street, which was completely deserted aside from a rogue tabby.
Kaz nodded, unable to speak a reply. You kept glancing from the main street to the end of the alley, which appeared as if it curved around and kept going. You had no idea if it was a dead end or not, but staying here was making you anxious, it was still too exposed.
“I Have a safe house not far from here,” Kaz said, pushing off from the wall and leaning on his cane.
“A safe house?” You replied, “In the government district?”
Kaz rolled his eyes, “You underestimate me.”
If he hadn’t been hurt you would have pushed him away, chuckling at his comment. Instead, you opted for offering him your arm so you could walk out of the alley together, hopefully, Stadwatch who patrolled the area would think you were a couple returning home.
The two of you walked arm and arm down a few streets, smiling pleasantly at the passing Stadwatch or the rare delegate returning to their boarding. After a few turns Kaz said you weren’t far from the safe house, which was an old apartment above a tailor.
“How did you even get an apartment above a tailor?” You teased, “Hiding a side business?”
The sound of a gun cocking stopped you both in your tracks.
“You even twitched, I put a bullet in the girl.”
The barrel of the gun was jammed into your back, the voice behind you ordering you both to turn with your hands up.
The two men before you were guards for Berezin, you could tell from the crest that was pinned to their jackets. You looked around for the other two men, but they weren’t around. Hopefully, they were far away, you weren't sure if you could win a 2-1 battle tonight.
You moved to pull your flint from your pocket, you had stowed it away safely the first time you and Kaz had run for your lives tonight, now you wished you stayed holding it. Your hand slipped into the pocket of your coat, your fingertips brushed the cool material, pulling into your fist and preparing yourself to summon. You only had one chance at this. The sound of the gun firing struck you first, the deafening crack that bounced from the walls. The searing pain in your right side forced your fist open in shock, your flint clattering to the cobbles as your other hand came to cradle your side. Immediately your blood started seeping through your fingers, soaking through your coat and dripping onto the street below. You looked up at the man who shot you, just in time to see Kaz bring his cane cracking into the side of the man's face. It sent him sprawling, the force of the blow knocking him off balance. You used your opportunity to kick the second man in the shin, stunning him for long enough for Kaz to incapacitate him too.
Kaz wound his arm around your waist, pulling you away from the two men as they groaned on the ground and dragging you up the street.
“Just hold on a little longer,” He spoke as he led you down another side alley, “We’re almost there.”
He forced you to stop before an old door as he fiddled with the lock. The dark green paint was peeling, revealing the chipped and water-stained wood. Kaz flickered with the lock for a few seconds and the door swung open, revealing a steep staircase into the safe house.
“You’re kidding,” You groaned, letting Kaz shuffle you into the small space as he shut and locked the door.
“Go on then,” Kaz smirked, pushing you up the stairs.
The two of you climbed up the stairs, silent as you struggled together. When you reached the top, Kaz opened the final door and you both tumbled through over the threshold. The safe house was less of a house and more of a safe room. Filled with crates and shadows of objects you couldn’t make out, it felt much more cramped than your room in the Slat. Kaz pulled out his bone light, casting the room in the pale green light. With the new light, you could see the space clearer. A sink in the far corner close to the only window, and a bed pushed as far from the window as possible. You stumbled over to the sink, holding yourself up on the basin as you tried to get a look in the small mirror at your wound.
“Let me help,” Kaz ordered, pulling out a crate from the wall and forcing you to sit down.
Kaz looked over your side, letting you know the bullet had gone straight through, but would need some stitches and to be cleaned. There was a pause where you both realized you would have to remove your coat and top so Kaz could see better. With shaky hands, you slowly unbuttoned your coat. Kaz helped you guide it off your shoulders, letting it fall out of the way.
“You’ll have to unzip my dress,” You whispered to Kaz, hands going back to your throbbing side.
Kaz cleared his throat, nodding and stepping around you to follow your instructions. You could feel the smooth leather of his gloves ghost over the skin on your neck as he fiddled for the zip. He couldn’t get a good grip, abandoning one of his gloves on the floor so he could hold the small tab properly. Kaz’s fingers were freezing, When he touched the skin on your back the chill seeped under your skin and into your bones. You focused all your energy on not shivering against the feeling. He gently folded the dress down, letting it fall around your hips so he could see the bullet wound clearer. It left you in your bra and skirt half of your dress, yet you didn't feel exposed. Kaz was nothing if not respectful to you and you truly felt nothing but trust for him now.
 There were no words between you as Kaz stepped to your side and crouched down. You could see him out of the corner of your eye, but he was focused solely on your wound, his brow scrunched up in a frown.
The two of you stayed silent as Kaz worked. You handed him what he asked for, a wet rag, sutures and a needle, a bandage. When he had finally tied off the last stitch, he started to bandage your waist. By now he had abandoned his other glove to the floor too, both of them covered in your blood and useless to him. He focused on the warmth of your skin as he wrapped the bandage around your waist, making sure to wrap it a few times to ensure it was secure. When he was finished, he noticed how quiet you had gotten, staring down at the floor with slightly glazed eyes.
“Are you alright?” Kaz’s voice came out more of a croak, just above a whisper. It pulled you from your dissociation, pulling you into the moment. You turned to look at him, The bastard of the Barrel kneeling by your side, hands stained with your blood and the most caring, almost loving look in his eyes.
You must have lost more blood than you thought, Kaz did not love you.
“I’m fine.”
Kaz nodded once, shakingly pushing himself off the ground and turning on the water to wash clean his hands. You didn’t move from the crate, mostly because you were unsure of what to do and also because there wasn’t exactly space to move in the room anyway.
“You should sleep.” Kaz said, refusing to look up at you from the sink.
“We both should. You can take the bed.”
Kaz shook his head, “No. You're injured, you take it.”
You rolled your eyes, “Did you sleep last night Kaz?”
There was a heavy silence.
“So you need to sleep now. There's plenty of room for both of us anyway.”
You knew as soon as you said it the atmosphere had changed. It was well known Kaz kept his distance when he wasn’t wearing gloves. You had rarely seen him without them no matter where he was. After the longest silence, Kaz finally nodded, letting out the quietest, “Okay.”
He turned to you, “There should be a stash of clothes in one of these crates, I could find them?”
You smiled, nodding. Sitting with the top of your dress folded down was starting to get cold and sleeping like this would only make things more awkward.
Kaz riffled through a few crates, finding ammo and whiskey before finding the crate filled with shirts and trousers. He pulled one of each out, setting them on the bed and turning his back so that you could get changed with some semblance of modesty. It was amusing for you, that he had already seen enough but he was too kind to even risk a glance now.
When you had gotten into the clothes, with a little struggle trying to lift your arm into the sleeve, you pulled back the quilt on the bed. Kaz helped, letting you shuffle across the bed to where it pressed to the wall. The bed was so much bigger than your one, more likely double the size. Your bed hardly fits you in it, slightly too short and skinny because of the awkward rooms of the Slat. This bed was different. Although not as soft as your own, the size meant you and Kaz both had enough room so that you weren’t too close.
Kaz was about to lie the quilt down and get on top when you stopped him.
“Are you mad?”
“What?” He scoffed, confused as to why you were heckling him now.
“Kaz Brekker, you will get cold. Just get under the quilt and stop acting like we’re some teenagers who can’t get ahold of ourselves.”
Kaz stared at you in shock, blinking down at you with pure perplexion in his eyes.
“Jesper was right,” He sighed, getting situated under the quilt to please you.
“Right about what?” You pressed, turning in the bed to fix him with a glare.
“You are cranky when you're tired.”
“Oh shut up,” You scoffed, rolling back to stare at the ceiling and now him.
Kaz chuckled, by now the bone light was fading steadily, the pale green light becoming nothing more than a faint glow from the corner of the room. You couldn’t see Kaz’s face too well, barrel able to make out the faint outline of his features in the dark.
For a while, the two of you lay in silence, the only noise coming from the far-off sound of waves in the harbor. With no one else on the streets, every time footsteps echoed around in the streets below, you held your breath.
“They won’t find us,” Kaz whispered, feeling you tense next to him.
You didn’t respond, trying not to panic yourself further.
“Listen to me,” Kaz shifted, the bed shaking slightly under you both, “We’re safe here, I won’t let anything happen to you, not again.”
“Wasn’t your fault,” You responded, mirroring Kaz’s movements to face him, “Jobs go wrong sometimes.”
Kaz didn’t react, “Sleep. We’ll head back to the salt when the city wakes up.”
You wouldn’t say it out loud, but Kaz being by your side to protect you filled you with a sense of ease. You could relax back into the pillow and trust that he was going to look after you, no matter what. As you slipped into sleep, you thought dreamily about how much you cared for the bastard of the barrel, even if he didn’t share the same feelings.
Kaz was thinking the same as he watched over you. He sat up in the bed as soon as you had fallen asleep, staring at the door in the dark, prepared for anything that might come barreling through it. He cared too much about you to let you get hurt again, especially when he was the only one around to protect you. He would never say it out loud, like you, but he would do anything to protect you from harm in the city where no one mourned.

Creepypasta/MH - Taking a Break With Them
Characters: Jeff the Killer, Nina the Killer, Clockwork, Jane the Killer, Eyeless Jack, Tim/Masky
Jeff the Killer
I doubt he'd remind you to take breaks
The closest he'll get to this is when he needs a break himself and decides to coerce invite you to join him
He likes to unwind with high-energy activities
Literally just chases animals in the woods sometimes
He's crazy fast, too, so he might even catch them
When he's done he'll feel quite restored
Unlike you, probably
"Ah, that was so refreshing!"
"I almost got lost like, five times! How are you that fast?"
On the rare occasion that he wants to do something more chill, or if he lets you pick what to do on your break, it's probably because he just got back from something more high-energy
He's game for most things when this happens
Movie? Sure. Painting nails? He'll take black or red. Just eating a bag of Cheetos in silence? Why not.
The only thing he refuses to do regardless of his exhaustion is take a bath
He HATES baths..... He finds them to be boring and a misuse of time
Plus he doesn't really notice smells (good or bad) anymore, so "nice" soaps are sort of wasted on him
Nina the Killer
Her way of making sure you take breaks is to invite you to take one with her
Even if she doesn't need one, if she thinks you need a rest, she'll step in to help out
Self-care is her go-to
Face masks, manicures/pedicures, hair brushing, makeup...
All while watching the most horrific splatterpunk movie you've ever seen in your life
She thinks it's cute if you get scared or grossed out
Meanwhile she's just smiling broadly to herself while she watches the gore scenes intently
She'll take a lot of pictures of you both as well
"Smile for the cam, Y/n!"
"Ack, no! I look like the green goblin with this mask on!"
"Aww, no you don't! Come on, show off your nails, too!"
She'll treasure those photos forever
Once your masks are off and your nails are dry, you guys entangle your limbs as you cuddle on the couch
If it's late at night, you'll probably end up falling asleep together
If this happens, Nina is definitely sneaking a few more pictures of you sleeping
Clockwork
Though she's not the best about taking breaks herself, when she does take a break it's really nice
She'll come and find you first, asking if you need a break too
She won't force you if you say no
But if you say yes, she'll find a quiet spot for you guys to sit together
She'll get some snacks and drinks and art supplies
While she sets up, you get to pick the music
She won't want to talk while she takes a break, so you'll be needing that music unless you like silence
You'll just sit together for a long time, each of you engulfed in whatever you're doing
She'll offer you supplies, but if you don't want to do art, she doesn't care
You can really do whatever you want as long as it's quiet
And no work allowed!! If it's break time, she doesn't even want you to think about work
If she notices you getting distracted, looking at the door or the clock or something, she'll glare at you until you get back to relaxing
"Hey. Get back to your thing."
"But my deadline..."
"No! Relaxation time. Now relax."
Once you both finish your leisurely activity, she'll let you get back to work if you really need to
Though she'd also just like to sit in silence together, maybe holding hands while you look out the window
Just prolonging your time together as long as you can
Jane the Killer
Likes to go on walks to take a break
She might not always invite you if she needs one, but will force you to come along if she thinks you need one
Prefers nature walks, but walking through the city is fine too
She likes to window shop when she does go on city walks
Might end up buying a little something as a treat
“Those croissants smell pretty good… should we go get a couple?”
“I was beginning to think you wouldn’t ask.”
When she goes on nature walks, she packs snacks
She'll walk slowly, but when she finds a nice spot she'll stop and break out the snacks
Also likes to engage in conversation while she walks
Just idle things, nothing too deep or serious
This is supposed to be a break; she doesn't want to be working her brain harder than she needs to
Might play some music when you guys find your resting spot
If it’s really nice out, she might sprawl out and take a little nap
Eyeless Jack
His breaks are more quiet
Not just in the sense that they’re relaxed, but he’s very subtle in discerning when a “break” begins
Like, he’ll just stand up and walk away without a word
You can choose to follow him if you want (he’d appreciate it)
He likes to make hot drinks when he’s trying to unwind
Even if he doesn’t like such things anymore, he finds the process of preparing them to be very relaxing
He’ll be overjoyed if you’re there to drink whatever he makes
Helps him feel less wasteful; or at least not obligated to try and drink it
It’s actually remarkably tasty
If nothing else, you might follow him to go on a break just to get the delicious drink
He doesn’t talk much, he enjoys the silence
Will hold your hand, gently brushing his thumb over your knuckles while you sit together
If you want to tell him about your day or something else non-consequential, he’ll listen
Just as long as it’s not a topic that reminds him of work/responsibilities
Won’t offer much in terms of responses though
Tim/Masky
He struggles to recognize when he needs a break
Usually he just pushes on until he crashes
When he does crash, he’ll just do absolutely nothing for several hours
Not sleeping, not watching TV, literally just collapsed on a chair, staring at the floor/ceiling
Will appreciate cuddles if you find him like that
Don’t expect him to talk though
Honestly you’ll have to be the one to initiate breaks
He likes to go on walks or do something calming to help unwind
Even domestic tasks are calming to him in comparison to his usual work, so you guys might just end up doing a chore together
Folding clothes, doing the dishes, something like that
And of course you’ve got music playing
Or you’re talking about some mundane topic
Exciting topics aren’t very relaxing, so you stick to comfy small talk
“Did you see the sign in front of the diner? They’re open till midnight now.”
“Hm. I wonder why. Maybe they’re trying to compete with the McDonalds across the street.”
It’s sort of a hassle to make sure he takes breaks, but once you get him on one, he’s usually rather pleasant and will thank you when it’s over
But if he’s too stressed about his work he’ll flat out refuse to give it up for one second

STRANGER (iii) - KAZ BREKKER
Tumblr media
tags: @beekeepingageissome @shadowzena43 @nikfigueiredo @mp-littlebit @starmansirius @hadesnumber1daughter // previously // next
Pairing: Kaz x Davina Rollins (enemies to lovers)
Word Count: 6,655
Summary: Davina’s reappearance has Kaz reconsidering just about everything. Meanwhile, Davina seems to be building a strong foundation for her snakes.
“I’m sure we’ll meet again soon, Brekker.” She nodded.
She blended into the crowd seamlessly and Kaz had lost the silhouette of her hood quickly. He hadn’t moved from his spot and the bustling crowd seemed to move around him, the way water rushed around rocks. Too many thoughts were swimming in his head.
Davina Rollins had left her father. There was a strange relief in that confirmation. He’d heard rumors that the beloved daughter had disappeared years ago, but he hadn’t cared to look into it. Davina had always been kind to him and Jordie, but he had no expectations of her turning on her father.
The hooded girl left more questions than answers. Who was she? What was she to Davina? How much did she really know?
Then, as he thought of them both, he realized something. He knew her. Maybe not in any real sense given that he couldn’t think of what her name could be, but he had met her before. Maybe it was years ago, maybe it was just in passing, but damn it all he should know who she was.
As he picked up walking again, he thought of Davina. A certain fondness settled in his chest and he tried to banish it. He hadn’t thought of her often, but when he did, it was always a pain. He remembered an easier time, when he was just a boy. When he had his brother. Davina was someone he thought was gone forever, like Jordie, but now she was somewhere near.
Despite that, he couldn’t imagine what Davina would look like now. It had been years since he’d seen her, and even remembering her as he knew her was harder lately. When he laid to sleep and let his mind wander, inevitably to those memories, her face started to blur. Her voice was muffled. He couldn’t fully remember the way she said his name, the way she laughed. He cursed himself for forgetting that.
He needed to find the girl in the hood again. She held the answers he wanted and he’d do what he needed to get them.
It took a few days but the girl resurfaced. She had visited Nina Zenik, left some sort of token to be delivered, so he asked Inej to retrieve it. The Wraith returned with a handful of papers.
“Drawings?” He flipped through the pages. “She asked Nina to get drawings to me?” It would’ve been a lie if he had said he wasn’t a bit offended.
“I didn’t tell Nina, but they’re rather well-done.” Inej said honestly. “She must be around more than we realize.”
She was right. All the images were perfect. He lingered on the page that had him and his brother. Jordie was the one face he’d never forget, even when he wanted to. Even when the memory changed from his smiling, warm older brother to the cold, bloated, water-logged corpse that brought him back from death.
Kaz dropped the papers on his desk with a sigh.
“Can you find her?” He asked, but he knew the answer.
“The hooded one or the Rollins girl?”
“The Hood may be an interesting investment. The Rollins girl can wait.”
He decided to omit Davina’s name for now. That was one of his many secrets, a tidbit of information that he could keep to himself for a little while longer. There was sentiment there, he knew, but he could ignore it. Call it a tactical advantage. Or simply a spin of Maker’s Wheel. A gamble.
He didn’t need to look to know Inej was gone. He both cursed and thanked her silence, footsteps light as feathers. When he was alone again, he lifted the drawings again and found himself staring at a penciled image of himself, from years ago. A boy lost to the waters. Dead and drowned, resting beside his brother, the Bastard of the Barrel returned to take his place. He had known he hadn’t fully let go of his brother. Part of him knew he never would while the other wished it so.
But looking at that drawing, he was that boy again. Playing with a girl with the biggest eyes he’d ever seen, a smile that was dazzling like sunlight, a voice that was always warm and welcoming. A girl that had made him laugh, played games with him, made up a ridiculous nickname for him.
“I like calling you Kazzle. You can call me Davi, if you’d like. My parents do.”
“I like Vina better.”
“Hmm.” She thought on it and then smiled. “So do I.”
“Damn you, Davina.” He cursed to himself and tossed the paper aside again.
He ran a covered hand over his face, hoping to rid himself of some of the thoughts. It didn’t work.
No, of course it didn’t. Davina had always had those hooks in him. No matter how he shoved the thoughts away, ignored the little things that could remind him of her. She was there, like a ghost, watching but never speaking.
Despite it all, he knew it all would be for nothing. Davina was still a Rollins. She was still Pekka Rollins’ daughter. And if he had his way, to break down everything the man had brick by brick, he just might be able to use Davina to do it. And if he had to, he’d do just that.
So Kaz cast the treacherous, childish adoration aside. He silenced the voice in his head that was calling her name, froze the warmth in his chest at the idea that she still thought of him, ignored the yearn to see her, find her himself and find out if he could be brave enough to confess anything to her. Instead, Dirtyhands would come to see the hard work done.
That was who spoke to the Hood when they brought her to the Slat.
He sat in front of her for a bit while she was unconscious, and she seemed to take an eternity to wake up. In the time between finding her in the alley and setting her up in the chair, Inej gave him what was allegedly a ring from Davina’s childhood. He could only vaguely remember the accessory so he simply put it on a chain and tucked it under his collar. He had stepped to the side and even considered calling for Nina Zenik when she finally came to.
The Hood infuriated him almost instantly. Her tongue was shaped by spite and anger, but if someone were to pay enough attention - the way Kaz did - they’d see she was hiding something. Most bravado was a facade for something, and the Hood was no exception.
Then her taunts began. She mentioned the gloves, as most do. That meant nothing to him. He had heard all the tales and even fabricated some of his own, but the name struck him like a blow.
Kaz Rietveld.
She spat his true name at him as if a threat, and Kaz Brekker was not someone to threaten. He was going to let it go, say something else that would make her cower, but she then mentioned his brother.
His movement was a reaction, a yank of the crow’s beak across her face. Their back and forth continued, nothing Kaz hadn’t expected, until something peculiar caught his ear.
“Your snakes?”
The panic was obvious in those wide eyes, though she covered it quickly. He knew there was something to that slip-up in her persona, the alleged right hand to Davina Rollins, but he couldn’t quite pinpoint it. Yet.
Even in that fleeting moment, her wide eyes seemed familiar to him. He started to wonder…
Another act of arrogance, another movement of the cane. Another dance of words and threats.
“What makes you think you haven’t led us to her already?” Kaz asked. His tone was simple, as if asking about stock prices or an old friend, but the threat was clear.
Her brows furrowed in thought as she dropped her gaze to the floor. She was retracing her steps over the past few days, wondering when she had lost the illusion and exposed everything.
He knew she hadn’t. Inej had followed her for almost a week until the Wraith grew annoyed at the Hood’s purposeful dilly-dallying and returned to the Slat. Yet the possibility was still enough to throw her off balance and Kaz reveled in her desperate attempt to confirm with herself that she hadn’t betrayed her gang.
Again, he found familiarity in the Hood when she spoke again. In that determination to protect and defend what was hers, to challenge those who dared to take it. He knew he had seen it in Davina, when they would play and one of other neighborhood children tried to take her toys or change the rules of their game.
Then the Hood broke free and kicked him in the head before fleeing.
It was months before he crossed paths with the Hood again. In that time, Nina had sent word that she was being visited by the Hood often. Jesper swore he saw a hooded figure in the shadows. Even Wylan was jumpier than usual.
Inej, as always, was the picture of calm. Stillness, simply squaring her shoulders as a dare to the Hood and all of Davina’s snakes. Kaz had never said it aloud, but he was thankful for her quiet presence.
He had gathered a name in that time as well, Melli Dimitrov. She was seen flashing the snake tattoo and a few well timed passings told Kaz that she was highly favored by Davina. It was a gamble, but when Kaz saw the Hood again, he threw the name out.
She denied it, of course. Kaz had expected that much. He wasn’t fully convinced Melli was the Hood, but he knew dangling that knowledge was a powerful taunt. It showed the Hood and Davina that she was not as hidden as she believed. That her snakes weren’t as careful as she needed them to be if she wanted to keep herself hidden.
Then the Hood threw herself into the canals.
Good, let her drown.
The next day, a loudmouth in the Emerald Palace let it slip that Davina would be visiting her father that night. It took a whirlwind of moves, but Kaz gathered Wylan and Jesper to stage the job while Inej kept their path clear.
He was going to get to Davina.
He caught her running from the Emerald Palace, blood dripping off her arm and a mask hiding the bottom half of her face. He snatched her by her wrist and pulled her out of sight. But when he looked at her, truly took her in and studied her, she was the little girl he knew.
After he learned the truth of Jakob Hertzoon, he believed the rest of the family were fake as well. He had thought the girl he knew as Davina was an actress, maybe intended to protect the real Rollins daughter. But with her standing there in front of him, knowing what he knew, he couldn’t deny it. Part of him was glad that there was some truth to those memories.
Her eyes were still the biggest he’d ever seen, though there was a sharpness in her stare now. A tiredness that weighed on her brows. Her cheeks weren’t the round shape he pictured anymore, matured with her time away. He could see the head of the snake peeking out of the open buttons above her dark vest.
She was Davina but also, he came to realize, the Hood.
How he didn’t realize before given those damn moon eyes he didn’t know and he would’ve cursed himself for it had that prickly feeling of dread not settled in his stomach. Well, if Davina hadn’t hated him before, she very likely did now.
“Hello, Davina.” Once he said her name, that boyish part of him that was kicking its way to the forefront was wishing he hadn’t. Her name was his secret and now it was said aloud, but at least they were alone. And he still had her nickname.
Vina. She’s Vina to you and she’s alive. She’s right here.
“Hello, Kaz.” She said in relief and he felt his heart beat a little faster. He knew she was smiling under the mask and the thought to take it off her crossed his mind. He wanted her to say his name like that again and again. Relieved. Grateful.
He would want to hear her say his name in any tone, he decided. Anger, disappointment, cheerfulness, resentment, regret, relief. He wanted the questioning sound of worry for when his luck would run out before he could more. He wanted her to say his name with a laugh, scold his name for a comment too cruel or an action too underhanded. He wanted all of it from her.
He almost said as much until he caught sight of her bloodied shoulder again.
He snapped back to focus. Back to the job at hand.
But of course, Davina saw through it. She threw Jesper at Kaz and ran off.
“I like her.” Jesper coughed with a smile once Davina had disappeared.
“You like women that punch you in the throat?” Kaz shoved his friend off and got to his feet.
“I like the women that don’t avert their eyes from the Bastard of the Barrel.” He snorted. “She’s not afraid of you, Kaz. That’s gotta be worth something..”
“She will be.” Because fear was better than whatever else was stirring in his treacherous heart.
He considered chasing her but he knew she was long gone. He huffed a sigh and motioned for Jesper to follow back to the Slat. He knew Inej was watching from above. He saw her hesitate to follow, but after a moment she was moving with them from the high ground.
Jesper talked the entire way back. About how Pekka Rollins could shoot his daughter, what Davina could’ve said to piss her father off, whether or not Davina was on her father’s side, what to do next time they saw her. He seemed rather giddy for that one.
Kaz thought of the ring sitting at the end of the chain around his neck. He kept it there since Inej had delivered it to him. It was an unsaid promise that he’d see her again. As the Hood, she had made threats to return for it. The thought nearly made him smile. He pictured the way she’d walk up to him, maybe demand he hand it over. Maybe she’d try to hit him, pull her blade on him, aim a gun at him. He knew he’d give it back when she came for it, but he wouldn’t just hand it over. She had given it to him as a gift after all.
When they got back to the Slat, Inej met Kaz in his office.
“You let her go.” She pointed out. He noted no anger in her voice, just interest.
“I did.” He confirmed. How was he to deny it?
“Why?”
He set his cane aside and pulled his gloves. One was stained with Davina’s blood. “Do you think Davina and her snakes could be useful to us?”
“Do you?”
He raised a brow and gestured expectantly for her to speak.
Reluctantly, she did. “Davina is still a Rollins. We cannot prove she is truly separated from her father just yet. She bought the gambling den he owned.”
“Word is she cut him out.” Kaz countered. “Her lieutenant was quite excited about that bit. And, well, he did shoot her.”
“Taking one piece of Rollins’ holdings isn’t enough.”
Brick by brick. That was how he had planned to take down Pekka Rollins. And that was exactly what Davina had done. One brick.
“No, but it’s a start.”
“What do you know about her?” Inej stepped closer, a new fire sparking her eyes. “Why does it matter if they’re useful? I don’t think she’d truly ally her snakes with anyone.”
He wanted to tell Inej. He wanted to tell her that Davina was the first friend he had in the Barrel. That she and him had something good, something not even her father could corrupt. He wanted to say that Davina haunted him, day in and day out. She was the little voice in his head that kept hold of his humanity and shoving it to the forefront when he needed it. But he didn’t.
How could he?
Snakes and Crows never did get along.
“We have the advantage over Davina.” He said instead. “Our numbers are better but I’d argue her coffers are better padded. And her snakes may not be helpless, though I doubt they have real strength yet.”
“What are you suggesting?”
“I’d like you to deliver a message to Davina.”
Her brows raised in question.
“If she wants to keep that gambling den, she’ll be paying a tax to the Dregs.”
“You think putting her under Haskell’s thumb a bit will pacify her?”
“No. Something tells me her father’s downfall would be the only thing for that.” In that, he understood her.
“Then why?”
He gave a small shrug. “Maybe it’ll humble her. It was you who said her pride would be the Hood’s downfall, didn’t you? It’s the same for Davina.”
“How are you so certain, Kaz?”
“She’s yet to prove me wrong.” Briefly, he thought of that night near the canals.
“Is it even midnight?” She practically laughed, just before the bells. “Oh Saints.”
“Let that be a lesson. I’m almost never wrong.”
He shoved the thought away and focused back on Inej. “Tomorrow night, I ask you to deliver a message from the Dregs to meet. We’ll use the square. I doubt after whatever happened in the Emerald Palace she’d be willing to come to us, and I’ll be damned to go to her. Her Hood is too crafty to allow any advantage.”
He thought of how she broke free the night he had her. How she dove into the canals. How she’d even escaped the Wraith.
“She’d never let us in her snakes’ den.” Inej shook her head. “You’ll have to tell Per Haskell.”
“Yes, I’ll deal with the old man.” He waved a hand.
“Could she get to Stadwatch?”
“Even if she could, she won’t. She can’t make that kind of show of force whether she wants to or not.”
“The Hood spoke as if Davina knew you.” Inej pointed out. “Tell me how you know her.”
“I’m not sure I do.” He said lowly, as if admitting those words would hurt him. And maybe they did. Maybe he needed that hurt to stop the infernal swooning at the thought of her. “And I’m not so sure she knows me at all.”
“Then at least tell me you have a plan.”
“My dearest Inej.” He offered her a near smile. “I always have a plan. We won’t be bested by Davina Rollins or her snakes.”
Meanwhile, you were cursing every decision you had made since you were a child.
You had made it to the safe house and managed to get the bullet out. You cleaned and dressed the wound as best you could before burning the blood soaked gloves. You ate some of the hidden rations and rested, a pitiful and restless night of what barely passed as sleep. The next morning, you dressed in some of the spare clothes.
You kept your pants and wore your vest underneath. You had a rough, worker’s shirt that was two sizes too big but it hid your protection so you didn’t mind. You had a long scarf that you draped over your head and pulled over your mouth.
It made you wish you had stashed Komedie Brute costumes as well. You shrugged your good shoulder, just another thing to add to the list.
You managed to make it to your Healer.
“At least you had the good sense to clean it.” She chastised with her accented Kerch, a light knock to the back of your head before her hands went to work.
“Yes, I seem to have all the good sense the Saints gave a rock.” You rolled your eyes, gripping the shawl in your other hand tightly. You thought your fingers would tear through the fabric.
“You should find a Corporalnik to add to your clutch.” She said, an off handed comment that felt more loaded than it should.
“Are you not my ally?”
“And what happens when you can’t make it across East Stave to find me? You bleed out in some alley and your body is added to the Barge. No, girl, you need someone closer to home.”
“There’s someone you’d like me to take in.” You understood. “Are you certain I could trust them?”
“He’s a good boy.” She promised. “He ran from the Little Palace when I did. I don’t want to send him away but he needs his own funds. I can only provide so much for him.”
“I see… He’s a Healer you said?”
“A gifted one. An average Tailor.”
“What of a Heartrender?”
“Poorly, but he could learn if you need him to.” She hesitantly admitted.
“Would he want to?”
“Using an untrained Heartrender may kill someone you didn’t intend to.”
“Yes, well, at this point I may need to.” You mumbled then winced as the wound burned sharply through your arm. “Hopefully he’s gentler than you.”
“Do you want quick or gentle?” She snapped, pinching your underarm.
You hissed slightly but said nothing. When it was done, you felt only soreness. You pulled your usual payment from your boot but she pushed your hand away.
“Take in my boy.” She said and you saw it in her eyes. A mother’s love, aching to protect her child. It made your chest tight.
“Take the money.” You gently insisted. “I’ll meet him. I may even know someone who can help.”
Maybe befriending Nina Zenik would have an advantage.
“Thank you, Snake.” She nodded, accepting your payment.
“Davina.”
“Myranda.” She nodded once again.
“I’ll come back at ten bells tonight. What’s his name?” You drew your cover over your head.
“Kolya.” She gave you a small smile. “But he likes Kol.”
With that, you were gone. You went back to the snakes and some fussed about your return. Some were quick to assume you were dead, but given your choice of interactions, you didn’t blame them. You simply waved them off, promised you were okay, asked one of them to bring you a proper meal, and went to your office.
Melli was the one to bring it to you and you were thankful for that. She made idle conversation about what you missed. The paperwork was submitted and approved, so you were now the official owner. All that was left would be to name it.
“We could call it something clever but snake related.” She offered. “Like the Viper Pit.”
You made a face.
“Serpent’s Den? Snake Nest?”
“Play with the ‘s’.” You suggested. “Like a snake’s hiss.”
“Oh!” She clapped. “Something like Sss…”
“Snakes are symbols of things like healing, protection, intuition. You get any ideas from that?”
“Hmm. Sixth Sense?”
“And one of the ‘s’ can be a money symbol.”
“Yes! See, this is why we need you.”
You smiled slightly.
“How do you feel?” She asked gently.
“Physically, I feel good. Mentally, I’m exhausted, Mel. Brekker was going to snatch me off the streets. My father shot me. The only good thing that has come from this is that I’ve potentially found a Corporalnik for us.”
“A Heartrender?” Her eyes were wide.
“A Healer.” You corrected. “But he could learn.”
“Where’d you find him?”
“His mother has done a few healing sessions for me, says she wants him to have his own money and that way I have someone ‘closer to home’.”
“What’s his name?”
“You can come with me to meet with him tonight and bring him here. Tomorrow, I’m going to try taking him to Nina Zenik.”
“The Dregs’ Heartrender.”
“I’ve been friendly with her and turns out, she was training with the Second Army for Ravka till she got caught up in a Drüskelle raid.”
“And now she’s in Ketterdam? I thought no one escapes the Fjerdan witch hunters.”
You shrugged. “I didn’t ask, but she’ll teach him.”
“And if she just runs off to Dirtyhands and tells him you’ve recruited a Corporalnik?”
“The only thing left for Kaz to do is to actually kill me.” You shook your head.
“Or me.” She mumbled, picking at a loose thread at her cuff.
“What?”
“You said it yourself. He thinks I’m the Hood.” Her eyes wouldn’t leave her sleeve. “What if he kills me thinking it’s her?”
Your chest tightened at the thought. Imagining Melli at Kaz’s mercy, the cruel things he could do just because he thought she was the Hood. But when you thought of the alley, the way he’d looked at you like he saw through you… And then there was the fleeting way he looked at you like you just hung the moon.
“Melli, you have my word.” You promised. “I’ll slice off each and every one of his cursed fingers if he so much as touches you. Okay?”
She let out a shaky breath and when she looked at you, you saw the tears. You felt a pang of guilt in your chest. Was that all you could give her? A true, warranted fear of Kaz ‘Dirtyhands’ Brekker and a flimsy promise of her safety. Her watery eyes served as a reminder that you had a responsibility to her and every person bearing the mark of your snakes. You had to keep them safe. Whatever war you wanted to wage against your father was yours. The want to ally with Kaz was also yours. They wouldn’t pay for your mistakes or your overzealous attempts at either.
You came around your desk and wrapped your arms around your lieutenant. She held onto you tightly, her fingers digging in as if you’d disappear if she let go. You felt her shuddering breaths shake her shoulders, heard her muffled cries against your shoulder. It all just made your promise more firm.
You refused to allow your snakes to suffer for you.
Later that night, you dawned your hood to meet with Kolya. Melli opted to stay behind and you didn’t press, especially when you noticed her hands still shaking. You offered whatever comfort you could before leaving.
He was already waiting when you got to the familiar building, a bag on his shoulders and a small trunk in his hands. He raised his free hand when he saw your figure and you felt the small increase of your pulse.
“Careful, Kolya.” You said, putting your hands up in surrender. “Your mother says that’s dangerous.”
“Da-“ He began but you shushed him quickly, your pulse settling to its usual pace. “The snake?”
You drew your hood back enough for him to see your face. He stared at you with wide eyes and you took a moment to take him in. Brown curls he had styled back, though one stubborn strand fell out on either side of his part. Dark brown eyes that reflected the moonlight. A tall, lean frame with broad shoulders. He was your age, maybe a year older.
That was a boy you could teach to fight. The idea gave you some hope.
“Come with me.” You said finally, turning to leave. He was quick to get to your side. “Tomorrow, you’ll meet with a potential teacher.”
“My mother told me you lead a small gang.” He said, less of an accent than his mother. You wondered if he had lost it or if he just had a better gift for language. “That you tend to get yourself hurt.”
“Both are true.”
“She also said you wish me a Heartrender.”
“A Healer is more than welcome. What do you wish for yourself?” You glanced at him, noting the sharp angle of his jaw. The lines around his mouth as he frowned.
“Somewhere I can do good.” He said finally, determination in his voice. “My mother told me of the Darkling, how he wanted to use Grisha to change Ravka so he could rule. I don’t want that.”
“Joining me means you’ll still fight, Kolya.” You admitted. “I intend to dismantle an empire and make amends with a boogeyman. I don’t intend to take over Kerch or Ketterdam. I don’t even want the Barrel, just to see the alleged King of the Barrel fall.”
“Are you not the princess, then?” He looked over at you carefully, as if worried he said the wrong thing.
“No.” You shook your head. “I was never intended for his throne.”
“So you’ll tear it down?”
“Brick by brick if I have to, but know that I will never ask any of my snakes to do something I wouldn’t be willing to do myself.”
You felt his hand take yours and you stiffened, but your steps didn’t falter.
“I can’t offer much, yet.” You confessed. “A warm bed, hot meals, safety while you sleep, and a means of your own money. It won’t be easy, nor will the money be substantial for now, but I intend to reward those that deserve it.”
“You needn’t convince me.” He said with a small chuckle and a squeeze to your hand. “My mother says you have a good heart, and I trust her judgment. I will fight beside you, heal your crew, train whatever you need. I know what this is. I am here to join your ranks, Snake.”
“And we’re grateful to have you… Tomorrow, we’ll create the contract. For now,” You took your hand from his when you reached the side door to your building. Melli was waiting on the other side, opening it when you knocked. “Melli will show you to your room.”
He nodded to you before Melli ushered him inside.
“He’s cute!” She mouthed with a grin and you nodded with a small smile.
You took a deep breath through your nose and glanced around. The streets were quiet, as it usually was around your building. But sometimes the quiet was eerie, as it was tonight.
The calm before the storm, maybe. Or it was just calm for once, pieces finally falling into place for you. Yet it made you wonder how things might fall apart next.
The next morning, you waited until after breakfast. Kolya seemed to get along easily with the rest of your snakes and that eased some of your worry. The boy was all smiles as he went around, introducing himself to seemingly everyone.
You called both him and Melli into your office when it was time.
“I suppose I should formally introduce myself.” You began, sitting in your chair. Melli stood beside you and Kolya sat across from you. “My name is Davina. This is Melli, my lieutenant. I am also known as the Hood, who met you last night.”
“I’m Kolya.” He nodded. “But I’d prefer Kol.”
You slid the paperwork towards him. “This is your contract with us. In it, it states the usual bits about loyalty and expectations. It explains how our payouts work, promotions, selection for jobs, incentives, etc. I have to recommend you read it on your own because I’m sure to forget something.”
Kol began to read the papers, his finger following along each line.
“We don’t recruit via buying out other deals, so it’s not a contract you earn your way out of.” Melli added. “There’s a renewal date, about 18 months from signing, so you won’t be paying a portion to the snakes.”
“How do you earn profit then?” Kol looked up for a moment before returning to reading.
“Everything we do, from our gambling hall to running jobs, comes into communal funds. Once a week, we payout the snakes and the rest stays in the coffers for whatever we need as a whole.” You explained. “Food, bills, supplies for jobs, business acquisitions.”
“And how do I go about one of those?” He pointed to the tattoo that was showing thanks to your sleeveless shirt, the snake beginning on your shoulder before creeping down and its head resting on your collarbone.
“Four weeks after signing.”
“Like a probationary period.” Melli nodded.
“Well.” He smiled. “I’m convinced. Davina, Melli, it’d be my honor.”
He signed the papers and you passed over his first payment. He took it with a thankful smile and practically skipped out of the room. You told him to ready himself to meet his potential teacher and that seemed to put even more pep in his step if possible.
“He seems nice.” Melli said once the door shut.
You were filing the paper away. “He does seem to be making friends quickly.” You agreed.
“Davina.” She practically sang and there was a teasing tone in her voice.
“Yes, Melli?” You looked up and saw the mischievous smile on her face. “All the Saints.” You sighed and rested a chin on your hand. “What’s that look for?”
“He’s very cute.”
“Is he?” You pretended you hadn’t noticed.
“And he’s nice. Loyal.”
“Seemingly loyal. We don’t know that for sure yet.”
“He signed on with barely any questions.” She deadpanned. “Don’t you see?”
“That we’ve found a great asset?” You shrugged.
Her eyes went wide and she threw her hands around in a frenzy. “No, Davina! Did you see the way he was looking at you?”
“Don’t start that.” You groaned.
“Maybe… If you get to know him…”
“Melli.” You warned.
“I’m just saying! It might help you get over-“
“Do not say it.” You cut in firmly. “There is nothing between Kaz and I.”
Your mind told you that was a blatant lie but you shoved the thought away, even if it were true.
“Then, please Davina, tell me why you’re so obsessed with that cursed alliance! You know he won’t go for it!”
“It’s more than an alliance.”
“Exactly. You’ve developed an infatuation and I don’t blame you. He’s very pretty but Davina, he’s horrid. You’ve heard what they say about him, the things he’s done.”
“Yes, and I’m daughter of the ‘King of the Barrel’. Who’s to say I’m much better than Brekker? Who’s to say my conscience hasn’t withered to something like his?”
“So you find kinship in him?” She scoffed.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It does! Your endless fawning is going to get you killed.”
“Enough!” You snapped. “What I hope to gain with Kaz is my personal responsibility. I’ve said that and I will not require you or any of the snakes to partake in it. If I have to leave them in your care for that time being, I will, but I won’t have you pestering me to stop.”
“Pestering.” She repeated and her face fell. “I didn’t realize that’s how you saw me.”
“You don’t understand.” You sighed.
“But you won’t tell me?”
“I can’t… I can’t because the story isn’t only mine to tell.”
She left without another word and you felt the guilt settle in your stomach like a rock. You knew it wasn’t fair to keep that kind of secret from Melli. She was supposed to be your most trusted, yet you kept your biggest motivation a secret. You wondered what Kaz had told Inej or Jesper.
Did they know that he knew you? That you knew his brother? Saints, did they even know he had a brother? Too many questions with no means of an answer. You went back to your room and washed before dressing in something more fitting to wear in Nina’s presence.
You snapped your cloak at your throat, called on Kol, and left your building.
When you arrived at the White Rose, you were led almost immediately to Nina. It seemed coming on a fairly regular schedule had earned you more priority. You liked the feeling of importance as you were led to Nina’s room.
“I come with a gift.” You said as Kol shut the door behind him.
She gasped. “Waffles?”
“Ah, ‘fraid not.” You clicked your tongue, pulling your hood down, and she huffed in disappointment. “But you may be more interested in this, Nina Zenik.”
“I do prefer silks or jewels as my flattery.” She said in thought. She seemed to finally register Kol. “You brought a friend? I’m surprised you have any.”
“Oh hush.” You waved a hand. “I brought you a student.”
“He’s Grisha? Corporalki?”
You stepped aside and motioned for Kol to take over.
“Yes, Miss.” He nodded. “My name is Kol and I am Grisha, from the Little Palace. I am a Healer mainly, but my mother says I can Tailor well and have potential as a Heartrender, if I can find a true teacher.”
She stared at him for a moment before she smiled slightly. “I do vaguely remember you…” She turned to you. “You want me to teach him?”
“I’d appreciate it.” You nodded. “I know you have obligations to the Dregs, so I don’t ask this as a snake.”
“Have you joined her ranks?” Nina asked Kol.
“If she’ll have me.” He nodded.
“Why?”
He looked at you and you could see what Melli meant that morning. Big, soft eyes and a gentle, almost admiring smile. You returned the small smile and nodded in encouragement.
“It was my mother’s idea.” He confessed. “She has worked with her a time or two, and my mother has always been a good judge of character. Never quite trusted the Darkling or his ambitions, but enjoyed the perks of the Little Palace.”
“We all have our vices.” Nina shrugged.
“I enjoy helping people, but I also like a good fight.” His eyes seemed to shine at the prospect. “That’s part of why we left Ravka. Mother said I’d be of too much interest for the Darkling. So it seems the Hood and the snakes can give exactly what I’m looking for.”
“Hmm.” She thought, lounging on her velvet couch. “Oh, alright. You’ve wooed me with those glittering eyes of yours. I’ll teach him.”
You and Kol smiled at her.
“But-“ She pointed at you. “I expect waffles. Or candies. Better yet, both.”
“I will make a note for next time, but for now, I hope this will do.” You laughed and dropped the money on the table. “Thank you, Nina. And you know I have to ask…”
She waved a hand. “I don’t have to tell Brekker anything I don’t want to. Now, leave us.” She shooed you away.
“As you wish.” You pulled your hood up. “I’ll wait for you outside, Kol.”
“Thank you.” He nodded and the excitement shone in his eyes.
You went outside and took a deep breath. The bustling crowds moved around you, some bumping your shoulder. You saw street performers shouting and dancing, magicians and illusionists. You saw kids trying to pick pockets. Some succeeded, some were scolded.
For the first time in a long time, you felt successful.
You had a Healer. You had a teacher for your Healer to expand his talents. You had a new business.
Maybe you could do this. Maybe you did have a chance.
All you needed was to settle up with Kaz.
“Speak of the Devil.” You muttered as you saw the black clad menace making his way over, the crowd parting as he moved through. The tapping of his cane grew closer and you tried to flatten against the wall. You tilted your head down in hopes of him passing you by, but he stopped right in front of you. You cursed silently and lifted your eyes.
“Fancy meeting you here, Da-“ He began.
When you heard the first syllable of your name, you reacted. You gripped his jacket with one hand and clasped your hand over his mouth as you pulled him into the nearest alley.

Come Back When You Can Make A Whale
This is going to contain some speculation for S3, so you know what to do! Or not do!
Tumblr media
SITIS: What did God say? JOB: Um... I'm not sure. I didn't understand much. Things too wonderful for me. Ostriches came into it. SITIS: Ostriches? JOB: And whales. God's very proud of the whale. Went into some detail about... how great whales are. SITIS: But did They explain? JOB: [shakes head] I think the point was, if you want answers, come back when you can make a whale.
Whales, huh?
If you aren't well read, this could be quite the misdirection. It should be reasonably obvious, given who is doing the talking - Job - what he is actually referring to, then we can join a couple of dots to make some speculative leaps.
You still with me?
No? Then let us start with how do you make a whale?
By giving it another name.
Tumblr media
Leviathan.
Chapter 41 of the Book of Job is all about the Leviathan, a great sinuous sea serpent with impenetrable scales and breath like fire. It sleeps beneath the sea until the end of days. Over time it came to be associated with any sea monster, then anything large, and what is the largest animal ever known to have lived? The whale.
The top of the matchbox is also worth a look. We have a skull and crossbones, which is classic Memento mori symbolism, fitting in with the resurrection theme of the Second Coming - but look at the way the address of the pub is spelt! Now, this not the same way it is spelt on the record single Maggie gives to Aziraphale; Goatgate is spelt as one word, not two. A little bit of searching reveals the meaning behind this fictional address that backs up and reinforces the quote on the side of the matchbox.
Tumblr media
Strong's Concordance for 66 gives us "wild, savage, fierce." Goatgate is an interesting one, because it turns out to be a relatively modern term from the urban dictionary, and I'm just going to refer to the polite version of it here - it's another word for "mouth." So 66 Goatgate is a "fierce and savage mouth." Yes, that does sound about right - in more ways than one, once you know who it is. (If you want to look up the impolite version, go ahead - I'm sure you will still find the connotations very amusing.)
Our metaphorical Leviathan is Crowley. He gave the game away at the end of S1 during the appearance-swap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This also means Aziraphale is his counterpart, Behemoth. Why - well, I made a bit of joke in my post here that he was playing at being a "river horse" while he wallowed in the bath of holy water during his part of the appearance-swap scene. Modern day scholars think the description of Behemoth in the Bible may be that of a hippopotamus in real life history. If that is so, I'd still be betting this is what the "dark horse" comment from Nina in S2E1 is foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
Maybe none of this new to you if you've been hanging around the the fandom for a while. That's fine, I'm just trying to establish the scene. And the next bit we need to talk about is this one, where Job gets a lecture from God.
Tumblr media
During this sequence, we hear lines that come from Job 38 and 39.
GOD: Job, if you have questions for me, I have questions for you. Do you know how I created the earth? Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth, Job? Were you there when all the morning stars sang together and all the Angels shouted for joy?
These lines are paraphrasing some of the beginning of Job 38.
Then we have:
GOD: Do you know the rules of the heavens? Did you set the constellations in the sky? Can you send lightning bolts and get them to report back to you? Did you give wings to peacocks, Job, or teach the ostrich to run?
These lines are again, paraphrasing Job, half from 38 and half from 39.
So then, we need to ask, why highlight these lines in particular?
Job 38 is mainly about setting the boundaries of the universe around us. The Earth might seem impossibly huge to a human, but it started with a single stone at its foundation. Earth and the other planets obey certain laws as they move around the Sun. The patterns of the stars in the sky take so long to change that it seems like they are set and inconstant. Even the chaotic form of lightning respects its Creator and returns to its point of origin.
From the last part of Chapter 38 to the end of 39 God challenges Job with a list of animals. The theme here is about freedom and wildness. Whether it is a noble lion, a loathsome crow, a nimble mountain goat, the head-strong wild ox or the willing war horse, they all flourish upon the Earth under the sight of the Almighty. Even the mightiest and most fierce beasts of all, Behemoth and Leviathan, have a place, although only God has the means to control those two.
None of this needs a human to be involved. We are so often the center of our own universe, and try so hard to control every aspect of the world around us that we lose sight of the bigger picture. Shit happens. Some things are out of our control. That doesn't mean its your fault and you're wicked and damned to go to Hell because of it. And that was the point God was trying to make to Job. The world is a far bigger, wilder and chaotic than you can imagine, but its also incredibly beautiful, and it runs itself within the rules and limits that seem to be set by invisible forces you can't see.
Tumblr media
So back to the script from the show.
The first set of questions from God could apply to both of the duo. They were both around when Earth was created and were more than likely there when the "morning stars" (the highest angels, such as Lucifer, Gabriel, Michael and angel!Beelzebub) sang together.
The second set of questions are the ones that seem to have got the most attention so far, with ops cross-matching them to things Crowley does in S2.
Do you know the rules of the heavens?
Tumblr media
Did you set the constellations in the sky?
Tumblr media
Can you send lightning bolts and get them to report back to you?
Tumblr media
Did you give wings to peacocks, Job...
(I make a suggestion this has something to do with Michael, but also see comments below)
Tumblr media
...or teach the ostrich to run?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first three of those questions are fairly straight forward, and I doubt many would dispute what they are referring to. But the reference to the peacock and the ostrich are more subtle and curious, and I would like to take a moment to look at the actual verse - because it is only one verse that is providing both questions - that is being paraphrased here.
Job 39:13 Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
Did you realize that the King James Version of the Bible is the only one that mentions peacocks in this particular verse? All the other versions mentions the first sentence of that verse in relation to the wings of ostriches: "The wings of the ostrich wave proudly." The ostrich is considered a cruel and witless bird in the Bible, pleased with the way it looks, and seemingly careless about its young.
Why does that sound familiar...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shax thinks this ostrich feather-clad angel in disguise isn't too smart either.
So using the peacock line is a curious choice in the script. Other than the "eyes" in the tail of the peacock having a connection to Michael's many watchful eyes on the world, it's still not clear how Crowley helped them upwards. Unless both lines are supposed to refer to Gabriel, and how the vain peacock was helped to both fly and run to a distant location in the stars.
Edit: Since I first wrote this, @beebopboom pointed me to some more peacock lore, and this helped me delve a bit deeper into them. Peacocks were associated with wealth and royalty, but they were also associated with immortality in early Christian beliefs. There was a belief that the flesh of the peacock did not decay after its death. The bright colours in its tail came from its eating venomous snakes, which reminded people of Christ becoming sin for humanity's sake (think of Crowley downing the laudanum to save Elspeth from Hell in the crypt in 1827, its a similar action.) The "eyes" on the males tail also represented the all-seeing eye of God. So we have a connection with both royalty and resurrection here.
(Oh - just as an interesting connection here - a number of the newer versions of the Bible not only don't mention the peacock in this verse, they compare the ostrich to the stork! The meaning is meant to be that the stork cares more for their young than the ostrich, but if you read the words at face value, you could take a double meaning away...)
Tumblr media
Let us return to questions, answers, and whales.
Tumblr media
Questions. Always questions. It's like the proverbial toddler who's always asking a never-ending string of "but, why?" for funsies and you just want them to shut up for a moment and think about the last thing you said first. They, too, are a bit like Job. They are the center of their own universe at that age, having not had much experience of the world. They have no grasp of how far it extends beyond them, and how little even we as adults know.
Tumblr media
If at this point you're going "oh, no, no, no, no, op, please don't tell me the point of this meta is it's all ineffable," relax. I'm not.
The point was to set you up for some nice, juicy, awesomely sweet S3 speculation.
Because I believe Crowley will finally get to ask his questions of God.
Tumblr media
(oh lordy, I made the mistake of taking a break to have a shower before trying to finish this off, because I was having trouble seeing how to finish this in a tidy way, and that caused me to have "shower thoughts" and now the nice sweet simple speculation has turned into a slightly bat-shit crazy kind-of one, although still on the same track as what I was originally thinking. Here goes...)
Tumblr media
We have this three card spread from waaay back at the beginning of S1. We all think its something to do with the three babies.
What if its not?
Because we need something like this to happen again - Aziraphale and Crowley either side of a third protagonist. What if it's the King of Kings, Love personified, Jesus, in the middle? (Or Adam again, I wouldn't discount that option either...)
Tumblr media
If you would look at the GIF and the screenshot together again and go, well that makes, sense, white for the angel on the right, and green for the demon on the left, I would jump up and shout at you - NO!
Look at the cards again! In the Tarot, that's the Ace of Swords on the right - it belongs to Aziraphale. It's a very powerful card, about new beginnings and change.* Lets call the one of the left Knight of Wands, which also represents the element of Fire. Knights are all about movement and journeys. Who owns the Bentley? And look what Gabriel has instinctively done with his hands - he has held his screen-left hand out to Aziraphale, the Sword, the angel who wears green, and his right hand out to Crowley, the Knight of Fire. The yin and yang qualities are actually swapped. That was what I was trying to tell you in this post. They aren't as obvious as they seem at first glance.
And love is the answer, it turns out. Did you see my comment the other day on another post? In Strong's Concordance 25 = to love.
Anyway, we should get a third parallel scene somewhat like this, and like when Aziraphale and Crowley took Adam out of time to talk to him in S1.
Only this time the three of them (with who ever is in the middle) should be having a talk with God about what is or isn't supposed to happen.
JOB: I think the point was, if you want answers, come back when you can make a whale.
Crowley could be a literal serpent (though I would be very surprised if he did manifest that way) but it should be a metaphorical Leviathan that stands before the Almighty to ask his questions and get his answers. And it will be that he has earned the right to be there, because he finally understands the lessons of Job.
@makewayforbigcrossducks I hope this answers one of your questions
*The Ace of Swords speaks of new beginnings, but it is a two-edged sword that can cut both ways. It is strength in adversity, victory out of struggle, good out of evil, a change in the old order on the way.

~~~~~Chapter starts from here~~~~~
Our perception of time is defined by our ability to choose the right moment. It is defined by our hesitance to choose, our impatience to think, and our despair to do something.
There is no right choice.
Every moment we choose to hesitate, to act impatiently is already a moment born in uncertainty. These are the defining moments that grip our wit and force them onto a pedestal made of guilt for our actions. Despite the illusion of lucky outcomes, there is no good choice. There is no choice that doesn't already carry the weight of a collateral damage, a necessary evil, which hides in the shadows of the illusion we call "the better choice".
'There is no right choice.'
This simple sentence was the only thing Y/N could think about as she watched Nina disappear with one of the Drüskelle men. She was definite Nina could take care of herself, but there was this small glimpse of hesitation in her head that told her to follow them.
"Where are you going?" She heard Kaz's whisper behind her.
"A Drüskelle disappeared with Nina. I have a bad feeling." Kaz looked back at her with urgency in his eyes. "It's part of her job to distract them however she pleases. You should be thinking about your part in this," he said but Y/N looked at him impatiently.
"She's a Grisha in a Fjerdan prison. I'm not taking chances." Just as she was about to walk off, her wrist was caught in a tight grip.
Kaz's face was unreadable as he held her in his grip, but Y/N saw the hesitance and worry in his eyes. She looked at him for a long moment, before gently squeezing his hand to reassure him. Kaz didn't let go of her as he spoke up, his eyes turning softer with each passing second.
"You have to be quick. If you go now, we probably won't meet until we're out. If you get in trouble, follow one of us, any of us," he said in a hurried whisper, not giving her time to say anything. Kaz took a shaky breath as he continued. "I cannot emphasize this enough, we don't have much time. Be. Quick." His words were firm, making it clear this was not a discussion. Y/N knew the hidden meaning behind his words though.
We don't have time. I don't want you to go.
Be quick. Be careful.
She wrapped her other hand around the one Kaz was already holding, before bringing it up to her lips to press a gentle kiss on their joined hands. When she looked up, the emotions swirling in Kaz's ocean eyes almost made her stay. Almost. But Nina was in possible danger.
Y/N squeezed their hand one more time before following where Nina went. Kaz stood there for a couple more seconds, looking at her go as he focused on the touch that lingered on his gloved hand. He hoped it wasn't the last time.
Tumblr media
Nina was cornered. She knew as soon as the man led her to a bedroom and closed the door behind them. He didn't lock it, which made Nina only slightly more hopeful. The man was talking and she tried to keep up her flirting facade, but she felt it fade as she tried to think of a way to put him to sleep, or escape if she had to.
The man talked and talked, and Nina grew suspicious of the dizziness that was getting worse by the minute. Her mind raced, trying to figure out a way to get rid of the man, but it seemed he had the same intentions. Nina fought him, but the drug was already having a toll on her powers, therefore she couldn't slow the man's heart down efficiently.
Her savior came dressed in leather and gun in hand.
"Nina dear, would you mind if I joined?" Y/N asked nonchalantly and the man turned to her along with Nina. She used his distraction to attack and this time she managed to blow a punch to his jaw, making him back away a few steps, closer to Y/N.
"Be my guest sweet Y/N," Nina replied a little out of breath, her dizziness making it harder to focus on her movements. The two of them tried to fight off the man, despite knowing that he was trained for this more professionally than they were. The fact that he was taller than Jesper wasn't helping either.
The man fell to the ground and the girls took the next few seconds to catch their breath. Nina felt relief wash over her at Y/N's appearance. She was about to thank the girl, when she was pushed out of the room, the door slamming shut behind her. She quickly turned to get back inside, but the door was locked. Nina tried with all her might to break it open, but Y/N's voice stopped her.
"Don't waste your time! Find Matthias and Kaz! Nina-" Her voice was cut off with a loud groan as she was slammed against the door. Nina began slamming the door with her shoulder, but it wouldn't budge.
"Y/N open the fucking door!" She shouted, her fist slamming on the wooden surface. She didn't get an answer until moments later, when Y/N yelled at her again on a hoarse tone. "If you don't fucking go right now, I'll open this door and kill you myself!"
Nina thought she was threatened multiple times in her life, but none of them affected her as much as Y/N did in that moment. The tales Inej and Jesper told her about the girl finally started to make sense. It wasn't Y/N threatening her, it was the beast underneath her skin.
Nina ran as fast as she could and prayed to the Saints Y/N would follow her in just a few minutes.
She'd rather not find out what Kaz Brekker would do if the girl didn't.
Tumblr media
She felt terrified.
Helpless.
Abandoned by her own powers.
Struck with disbelief and horror, as the arms held her down. She never thought this would happen to her. She was always observant, alert, focused on her surroundings to the point of being paranoid. Her own powers abandoned her as soon as the man's chest collided with her back.
Her entire body was hurting from the hits she took. She felt the salty taste of blood drip from her nose down to her lip, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth. Still, she didn't stop trying to get out from under her captor. She managed once, so she could do it again, this time trying to avoid getting her head smashed into the wall.
The concussion was slowly but surely dripping her ability to form coherent thoughts. She wasn't thinking about the prison she was in anymore, nor the plan she had to complete, nor the loud noise they were making, and not even her powers being discovered.
The only thing she could think of was getting out of this room. Up from this bed, out from under the man, out of his grip and out the door. She just had to get out.
Her decision to willingly lock herself in with the man was a decision made in a hurry. She didn't dare hesitate when she noticed the small bottle of liquid in the man's pocket, which was there to make Nina obedient, unaware of his actions. There was no right choice, Y/N knew that and still, she chose to get Nina out.
There was no right choice.
If she went with Nina, the Drüskelle would've alarmed everyone and they'd probably be dead by now. If she let Nina stay, one, or both of them would be unconscious. If she got Nina out, she could escape, but Y/N would've had to fight her way out. She unwillingly choose to fight until death, and she was regretting that decision greatly. Except getting Nina out, that she didn't regret.
To her shock, Y/N's mind went blank. She tossed herself, trying to get at least one of her arms out to grab her revolver just within her reach, but she failed attempt after attempt. Her breathing became ragged as the panic rose in her, making her captor's grip so tight, she could feel his fingers dig deep into her bones.
Getting a grip on her emotions to think of an escape plan became almost impossible, the only thing remaining in her head was survival. No matter how, she just wanted to survive this.
The sound of a belt being unbuckled made her eyes widen in horror, as her movements became frantic. She could feel her coat being moved, exposing her entire lower half. Her tears mixed with the blood still dripping from her nose, her escape attempts too weak for her liking.
She felt her own belt being removed as she suddenly began screaming for help, despite knowing no one would hear it. Her fighting abilities, her shapeshifting power and her cleverness left her to deal with the panic alone.
For a few seconds her gaze shifted to the gun not far away from her. Desperate to get out of the situation, Y/N's first thought wasn't to shoot her captor, but herself.
If she managed to grab the gun she could easily pull the trigger, it wouldn't take longer than two seconds to do it. They couldn't use her for experiments or something worse, if she was dead. As soon as the thought formed in her mind, she cried even more.
What would her brother think if he knew she gave up that easily?
What would happen to Kaz if he lost her?
Could she really leave them behind, just like that, her family?
Could she end her life?
Did she really want to die, or was she just too desperate to escape?
Was she ready to end her life, just when it was about to began?
"No," Y/N whispered as the man was about to take off her pants. Gathering every ounce of strength she still had left, Y/N arched her back and cracked the man's nose with the back of her head. It hurt, but she ignored the pain and quickly grabbed the gun.
Or tried, because the man was fast to recover from the hit on his face. He grabbed Y/N again and the two of them began another fist fight.
She looked to the side to see if the gun was still there and when the man noticed where her gaze went, their movements stilled for a moment.
Both of them glanced at the weapon, then at each other.
They both reached for the gun.
The Drüskelle got there first.
Kaz was on the very edge of punching someone. It's been six minutes since they brought Yul-Bayur's son, Kuwei, with them. It's been eleven minutes since he and Y/N parted ways. Nina was talking for less than thirty seconds and Kaz wanted nothing more than smash someone's face in.
As soon as he spotted the disheveled clothes and dried blood on Nina, Kaz knew Y/N was in more than just trouble. He listened to the conversation Nina and Matthias was having about going forward with the plan, because she threatened Nina to do so. Kaz would've agreed that it was the logical thing to do, but all logic went out the window the second he heard "danger" and "Y/N" in the same sentence.
They were short on time and the footsteps of the soldiers could be heard as theí got closer and closer to the hall they were standing in. While the other three looked at each other in worry, Kaz had a small grin on his face that could only be described as evil. There was no emotion in his features except undeniable rage.
One of them hurt Y/N. He did not care which one. He was going to kill them all.
Noticing the murderous expression on Kaz, both Nina and Matthias tried to talk him out of it. There was no way they could fight off that many Drüskelle, let alone win. Kaz sent them a condescending look as he spoke up.
"Do you not want to get revenge dear Nina?" His sweet tone did nothing to soothe their nerves, it only made Matthias more convinced that Kaz was a demon from Hell. Seeing their hesitance Kaz continued. "Then this is your chance."
"Killing them won't stop anything! There will always be Drüskelle, as long as Fjerda exists," Nina said but Kaz scoffed.
"That isn't my problem, but do you know what is? You, leaving Y/N behind to deal with a soldier raised to kill her kind, and now when you have the chance to kill a few of those people you refuse, because..what? You don't want blood on your hands? You don't want to kill them?" Kaz asked and Nina looked at him in anger, but kept her throughts to herself.
"Cat got your tongue?" Kaz chuckled humorlessly and Matthias couldn't help himself as he stepped between Kaz and Nina. "Enough, demjin. As you said, we have to go. We don't have time."
But Kaz didn't care. As if he had all the time in the world, he slowly turned to look at Matthias with predator-like eyes, as he spoke up on a dark voice.
"It won't take long what I'm about to do." The small grin he gave Matthias resembled a demon, about to commit unforgiveable, evil things. They knew what that smile ment by now, therefore both Matthias and Nina watched as Kaz slowly walked up to the first soldier that rounded the corner. Nina only noticed just now that his cane was back with him, because when they parted at the party he didn't have it.
Y/N.
Y/N brought it back to him.
Kaz was about to go on a rampage. Nina immediately knew what it meant. The rage in his eyes, riling Nina up about the Drüskelle, his irrational decision to stay just to fight. Kaz wasn't doing it because it was the right thing to do. He was doing it for distraction, to give Y/N time to escape without coming across another soldier.
Kaz was acting protective over her, despite not even knowing what happened to her yet. Maybe it was better that none of them knew, Nina thought. Along with her earlier shock and surprise, she felt curiosity take over her as she thought about what his actions could've ment.
Kaz cared about Y/N more than he was willing to show, Nina didn't question that. But why? What unbreakable bond was between the two that made them so protective?
Nina didn't have time to wonder any longer, because Kaz lifted his cane with a barely noticeable grin. He was about to go on a killing spree.
And he was going to enjoy every second of it.
As soon as Kaz lifted his cane for the first strike, Nina knew most of these soldiers wouldn't leave the hallway. She couldn't help but watch as Kaz turned into the monster Ketterdam knew so well.
Demjin, as Matthias had called him, Dirtyhands with claws in the place of fingers, the man born from shadows, The Devil behind the mask of a human. In that moment all of them seemed fitting for Kaz.
Although Nina joined in on the fight, with Matthias making sure Kuwei wouldn't escape, Kaz still had a major bodycount. The silver glint of the crow on his cane couldn't be seen anymore, it was drenched in blood just like its owner.
Kaz didn't fight gracefully, he wasn't untouched by the soldiers and his movements resembled any other person in the Barrel who didn't know how to fight and just kicked and smashed everything they saw. And he was winning.
Despite the blood and countless hits to his face, his more prominent limp and the disheveled clothes, he was smashing the soldier's head in with full force, not caring about the mess he was making, or how much of a maniac he seemed from the outside.
All he cared about was taking down as many as he could, ensuring that his girl wouldn't come across one of them, and hoping she was already on her way out of this prison.
When the ash tree blew up and Kaz, along with the rest of them, jumped into the underground spring flowing beneat it, he felt panic rise within his chest. The water was freezing cold and he had to ground himself not to start taking big gulps of water, or accidentally bite down on the baleen too soon.
As his air slowly ran out, Kaz could only think of Y/N, with the heavy pressure of regret and the ice cold water.
I'm afraid I can't keep my promise. Forgive me, my love.
Tumblr media
"What the FUCK happened to you?!" Jesper said loudly, making both Inej and Wylan shush him. Their faces soon matched Jesper's concerned features as they looked at Y/N in shock.
Blood was smeared all over her face, probably in a failed attempt to clean it off. A black circle was forming around one of her eyes and the dried blood seemed almost black around her nose. She was clutching her left arm, making the blood drip onto her other hand. Her coat and shirt was torn, her hair a mess like she was caught in a hurricane and her eyes seemed numb, almost empty.
She exhaled deeply as she approached them. "I'm fine and how are you, Jes?" She asked, trying to hide the tremble in her voice.
Jesper immediately helped her sit down, careful not to touch her injured arm while Inej grabbed the see-through scarf still around her to tie it around her wound. Wylan grabbed a vial from his bag and gave it to Jesper.
"Pour all of it on the wound. This'll make sure it won't get infected. I have some more on the boat," he explained while Jesper did as he asked. Y/N tried to muffle her groans as the liquid touched her skin.
"Did you just pour acid on me?" She groaned and Wylan looked at her with a sheepish look. "No, that's absinthe."
All of them turned to Wylan with a surprised look. It was Y/N who spoke up first. "You've been carrying absinthe around this place all this time?"
"And we just wasted it?" Jesper asked with dramatically wide eyes as he glanced back at Y/N's injured arm, that was now succesfully bandaged by Inej. "Maybe I can still lick it off."
"You keep your tongue away from me!" Y/N threatened Jesper, but the humor in her eyes betrayed her and both of them let out a small chuckle.
Inej joined for a small smile, but reminded them they should be going. They walked in silence for a few minutes before shouting could be heard in the distance, followed by footsteps getting closer. They have reached the glass bridge, but they couldn't feel relieved just yet.
Y/N poked Inej on her shoulder and pointed out to a Fjerdan tank just below them.
"I have a very terrible idea."
Tumblr media
Nina decided that she hated when Kaz fell silent.
Ever since Matthias and her reuscitated him, and briefly argued with him of course, he hasn't uttered a word, nor did he make any sound.
Their small group was trekking across the snow to reach the harbour, where hopefully they could get on the Ferolind without any more obstacles.
Nina tried to lighten their moods by striking up light conversation, but Kuwei was the only one who talked to her, despite his nervousness and worry. But even the shu boy's talkativeness came to an end, leaving Nina alone with her thoughts which were currently revolving around what just happened, and strangely, Kaz's behaviour right after he was saved from death.
The silence was broken by a loud noise in the distance. It was very faint at first, muffled by the wind, but slowly it became louder and louder. There was the sound of a machine whirring, mixed with people yelling and an animal barking. The small group looked around to see where the noise was coming from, only to realize it was getting closer and closer.
Nina couldn't shake the awfully suspicious feeling take over her as she remembered how Kaz lashed out when she accidentally touched his gloved hand. He was holding it as if it was hurt, but she knew there was something else behind his secretiveness, because he refused to take off the cold, drenched gloves.
The heartrender couldn't figure out if it were the gloves themselves that he didn't want to leave behind, or if there was something entirely else he was hiding. Either way, Nina felt suspicious.
When they fully looked behind them, they saw a tank coming their way with a white wolf running after them. Kaz thought it was the enemy at first, that the Fjerdans found them at last and this was the end, and he had to come up with a plan very quickly. But then he noticed a person standing on top of the tank, waving a green scarf, and suddenly any previous thought left his mind.
She's alive.
She came back to him.
Kaz didn't even notice when he began smiling, and he didn't care who saw him in that moment.
His shapeshifter was back, and they were going home.
"Saints, Kaz! You actually look happy!" Nina giggled, looking at him in surprise.
"Don't be ridiculous," he said, but there was no mistaking it. The boy shook his head with a light chuckle, his eyes not moving an inch away from the tank and the white wolf. Kaz Brekker was grinning like an idiot, feeling the happiest he ever did in his Saints-damned life, if he dared admit it to himself.
Before they could react, Kaz began running towards the tank, clearly not giving a damn about his limp, nor the cold wind. Nina followed him with a matching smile, Matthias and Kuwei close behind them. The tank came to a stop and Jesper rushed them onto it, wherever they found space, and told them to hold on tight.
**The white wolf leaped onto the machine and changed back into Y/N, who -upon seeing Kaz's grin- began smiling like a fool too. They let themselves get lost in each other's eyes for a few seconds longer than they usually would around others, because Saints, they just found out the other is still alive. They were allowed to look relieved and happy.
Their staring contest was broken by Inej and Wylan, urging Y/N to sit and hold on tight. She quickly plopped down just a few inches below Kaz and grabbed the side of the tank. As the tank began moving again, her other hand gripped the lower half of Kaz's cane, and gave it a playful tug. In response Kaz pulled the cane, and with it Y/N, closer to him, making it clear to her that he was not letting her go.
He risked taking a look back, and he felt his heart swell at the sight of Y/N looking back at him with loving eyes, and a soft smile that he knew was reserved for him only.
Kaz Rietvield knew the exact moment he fell in love with the girl. He was fifteen and desperate to make her smile.
Kaz knew exactly where he was going, and Y/N was the destination.
But Kaz Brekker never fell in love with Y/N Orlova. He didn't fall, he didn't run, he walked. His steps were calculated, not based on some random hunch, a fleeting feeling, but a conscious decision that he made.
She wasn't a last minute detour, or just another stop along the way.
**A/N: Just imagine the instrumental to I wanna be yours playing while Kaz and Y/N look at each other, awwww🥹
Tumblr media
Unlike your hellish few days, Megumi’s were uneventful. After he choked you in the club, he took a cab home. His sister Tsumiki was fussing over him, much to his chagrin. She asked how his night went, if he had a good time, if he kissed any girls. She thought she was hilarious, but Megumi found her to be nothing but a nuisance.
He hates that he was trapped with her until he finishes university, being unable to move out from under her over protective thumb is painful for him. Tsumiki is invasive, irritating, and too God damn happy. And what’s worse, she’s not his real sister. He’ll never think of her as such, to him, Tsumiki is a means to an end.
He hates her. He hates his whole God damn family. But right now, right in this exact moment…
There’s nobody he hates more than you.
While you were still in a drug infused sleep, Megumi’s Wednesday was different. He went on as if everything was normal, he got a ride to university from Tsumiki. It’s rare she has the time to take him since she is usually at work.
He found the entire day dull. It pained him to admit it to himself, but he supposes part of him missed you. He was blissfully unaware of your coma-like state, he smiled into the pencil he was chewing in his mouth as he imagined that you’re terrified to come back to school for fear of seeing him. It gave him a sick sort of power trip, knowing what he’d done to you, what he’s doing to you.
He’s sick.
But it’s okay that he’s sick, because he knows.
He knows he’s fucked up, and everything he’s doing to you is fucked up.
But Christ it’s fun.
Thursday is the same, although he’s grateful he gets to finish the school day earlier. But as he walks through the parking lot, he pauses when he doesn’t see Yuuji’s car in its usual spot. He didn’t think twice about it yesterday.
Of course perfect Yuuji would want to stay home and play the role of the doting boyfriend, protecting you from the big bad bully, wrapping you in cotton wool and shielding you from the world. But today is the second day Yuuji hasn’t been to school.
Megumi would never admit it out loud, but his blood ran cold at the thought that something terrible had happened.
Tumblr media
He arrives home, his sister nowhere in sight. Megumi dumped his backpack and sprawled out on the couch. And against every voice in his head telling him not to, his resolve crumbles, and his thumbs involuntarily types your name into Facebook.
He couldn’t see much since you weren’t friends, but he thought he might be able to see if anyone had said something about what happened.
Alas, there was nothing.
He decides to try and put it to the back of his mind.
Within the hour, Tsumiki is home. She begins preparing dinner for the two of them. She waffles on about her boring, mundane workday. She hasn’t even realised that Megumi has his headphones on and is completely tuning her out. An eyebrow quirked on his face when a text came through to his phone.
Nina: Megumi omg baby we are in soooooo much trouble! 😳😟💘xxx
Megumi’s thumbs hover above the keyboard momentarily as he contemplates how he should reply. One thought ran through his mind.
Who the fuck is Nina?
It had to be one of those annoying sluts from his class. But was it the blonde or the redhead? They’re both practically the same save for the hair colour.
He can barely remember which one he fingered; he thinks it’s the blonde.
It had to be her, surely the other one wouldn’t be so bold as to call him baby. He shudders and gags as he thinks of the pet name. The more he debates formulating a reply, he opts to not bother.
Megumi technically didn’t do anything wrong.
Hours pass, it's close to 1am. Tsumiki never normally stays up this late, but she has the day off tomorrow and was enjoying watching movies with Megumi.
Well, she thought they were watching together.
Megumi is just in the room playing on his phone, pretending she didn’t exist, as usual. Just as he was about to go upstairs, the siblings both startle at the sound of an ominously loud knock. Tsumiki looks at him, as if to ask if he was expecting anyone. He shakes his head in response, so she gets up and looks through the peep hole.
She gasps, and opens the door quickly after she’d spotted who was outside.
Megumi isn’t ashamed to admit that his stomach drops when he realises the police are at his door. And the disappointed look in Tsumiki’s eyes as she hears them ask if Megumi Fushiguro is home make his insides churn. She welcomes them in, clearing space for them to sit on the sofa.
Megumi sits down next to her, she wraps an unwelcome arm around him, a sign of solidarity.
“There’s been a serious allegation made against you Megumi.” one of the officers speaks. Megumi hears his sister’s breath hitch, but he clears his throat and tries to remain calm.
“In regard to what? I’m not sure what you’re referring to.” he answers simply. The officers look at each other quickly before giving him their attention once again, as if they’ve already decided he's guilty.
“A classmate of yours has accused you and two others of drugging her in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Do you know anything about that?” the policeman asks. Megumi does his best to stay composed, shaking his head in response.
“Megumi would never—”
“Please don’t interrupted miss.” the other policeman speaks. Tsumiki bites her tongue as she sinks back in her seat. His attention focuses back on Megumi before he starts flipping through a notebook. “This young woman was in a terrible state. I won’t go into too many details, but she was publicly humiliated and has been unconscious for the last two days.” he explains. Megumi’s jaw bubbles as he tried to supress his emotions, Tsumiki’s hands cover her mouth in horror as her ears digest the information. She leans forwards timidly, as if to ask permission to speak.
“I- sorry, what do you mean by publicly humiliated?” she wonders.
The officer clears his throat, unsure whether he should say. The other nods, wanting to fill them in. Megumi knew their little game. They think if they tug at his heartstrings and make him feel guilty, his emotions will give him away. He didn’t know what happened after he left; he told the girls that the drug will be enough to make her embarrass herself.
“When she was discovered on the bathroom floor in the club, we were informed that she had urinated and vomited on herself on account of the drugging.” they explain.
Megumi has to do everything in his power to supress his laughter.
He knew you’d find a way to make a fool of yourself when it was in your system, but that really cut the cake.
“That’s awful.” Tsumiki says softly.
“As well as that,” the officer speaks again, commanding the sibling’s attention, “the t-shirt she’d worn that night appeared to be cut open with a pair of scissors. We could tell from the CCTV from the night of the incident that someone had written the word 'bitch' across her body. According to the woman’s partner it was written in lipstick.” he tells them.
Megumi managed to keep composed, although he was seething. Those idiot incompetent girls could be the undoing of him. He specifically told them that they had nothing else to do other than slip the pill in your drink. Their petty jealousy had clearly gotten the better of them, and it could fuck them all up well and truly.
Tsumiki gasps when she hears the final sentence from the officer. She assures them that Megumi could never do anything so horrible. They look at him, and he knew he had to speak.
“I don’t know anything about that. I left earlier than most, I got a cab. My sister was awake when I got back, and I’m sure the CCTV can prove that I wasn’t there.” he tells them calmly.
“How do you know you were gone before it happened?” the officer asks, feeling clever, feeling like he trapped Megumi in a lie.
“Because you said it was the early hours of Wednesday morning. I had left the club by 11:30pm, like I said, the CCTV will be able to prove I left early. This incident has nothing to do with me,” Megumi stands to his feet, knowing he’s won and has no interest in carrying on the discussion anymore. The policemen knew as well as he did that it was your word against his, he feels untouchable. “Whoever she is, I hope you can get some justice for her.” he tells them, smugly. His sister beams up at him with so much pride. Her little brother is so good, so respectable, he’s perfect in her eyes.
If only she knew.
She shows the men out of their home, requesting he get in touch if he remembers anything that might help their case. Megumi finally retreats to the safety of his bedroom, feeling cocky and proud of himself for slithering his way through your feeble attempt to get him arrested. He feels like a god. He feels invincible. An electric excitement jolts through him as he wonders when he might see you next.
What he can do to you next.
Tumblr media
Friday brings another uneventful day, he really fucking misses you.
It sounds more romantic than it is.
Maybe it is, in some twisted way, treat them mean to keep them keen.
And he is downright vile to you. He doesn’t feel anything but pure unadulterated hatred for you. You’re too fucking nice, like his sister. No one is that nice. The way you felt compelled to compliment his art whenever you had the audacity to lean over and observe his sketchbook. And every time you did it, it was pictures of him. He thinks he hates you the most. And then when he remembers that man, that scumbag, he takes first place. If you could have just shut your fucking mouth, if you didn’t feel so compelled to start talking about those pictures of him, maybe you wouldn’t be paying the price now.
Megumi arrives home from his boring school day and kicks the door shut behind him with his foot. He's furious. The combination of his hatred for you and his father is too much. All he wants to do is go to his room, get changed and head outside for a few hours to clear his head. But when Tsumiki stops him from going to his room, he just about bites her head off.
“What?!” he barks. The volume makes her jump, but she simply smiles as she prepares to speak.
“Dad called.” she told him.
“My dad. Don’t say dad as if he’s your dad too. What did he want?” he moans at her. Her smile pulls downwards into a frown at his rude and hurtful words. She was about to answer him again, but before she can she's interrupted by the creaking of stairs. The siblings look to the source, and Megumi’s blood boils at the sight.
“That’s no way to talk to your sister.” Toji speaks. He’s just showered. He's wearing some grey joggers and his chest is bare, he's in the middle of the process of pulling a shirt over his head. His shirt clung to his water-soaked body in all of the right places, it's almost a little pornographic considering how innocent of an act it was.
His children almost didn’t want to look at him because it's so unintentionally erotic. Although Megumi doesn’t like to look at him anyway. “It’s been a while son. You don’t mind if I take him for a drive do you Tsumiki? Got some things I wanna talk to ‘im about.” Toji smiles at the young woman who nods enthusiastically.
“I’m not going anywhere with you.” Megumi spits.
“I wasn’t fuckin’ askin’ so get your scrawny ass in the car and stop bitchin’ at me.” Toji commands, walking ahead and leaving through the front door.
What Megumi hates most about Toji is no matter how much he hates him, how much he knows he’ll never change, he still – for some unknown reason – craves his approval. He knew his son would follow him through the door, that’s why he didn’t wait for him to start moving his feet. Because within seconds, Megumi is following him through that very same front door.
Tumblr media
The silence in the car is deafening.
Toji is feeling the need to drag out whatever it is he wants to discuss, and Megumi has absolutely no desire to make idle chit-chat with his piece of shit father. The new car doesn’t go unnoticed. Megumi can feel his blood bubbling with rage through his veins.
When Megumi’s mother died, Toji went off the rails and he brought Megumi right along with him.
He was a downright mess. He drank, he did drugs, anything to forget. And Megumi didn’t understand. All he knew was that he lost his mother, and his daddy wasn’t his daddy anymore.
Toji could barely stomach looking at him, he reminded him too much of his dead wife. Although he found a new wife to go off the rails with, and that’s how Tsumiki entered the fray.
They were both terrible for each other and they fed off each other’s toxicity. Megumi couldn’t bear to look at his father without reliving his trauma, his unresolved resentment coursing through his fragile skin.
He understood that his father was hurting, but he was too. He lost his mother. And instead of taking care of his son, being there for him, helping him heal. He found a new wife, narcotics, and shady ways of making money. That was more important than being a dad, apparently, and this new car, his new set of wheels that reeked of money and sin, makes his body fail him.
Megumi isn’t sad. He's never sad. What he's feeling right now, some may call a broken heart. But not him. To Megumi, the way his heart feels being in such close proximity to his father is different.
It didn’t feel broken. It feels shredded.
It feels like it has been wrapped in barbed wire, and when he was near this pathetic excuse of a human being it did all it could to bulge out of its piercing prison. Chunks escaped, sure, but they were destroyed. The rest of his heart is stained, bruised and pouring blood. He couldn’t bear it.
Megumi couldn’t bear it.
“Let me out,” Megumi speaks, his breathing intensifying. His chest rising and falling rapidly.
“What? Kid, stop bein’ a bra—”
“Dad! Stop the car!” he screams. He stares at his father, begging him to listen to him.
When Toji looks over to where his son is seated, he doesn’t recognise who he's looking at. Snot and tears dribble down his face. His eyes are puffy and red, totally bloodshot. His white irises cracked with red uncomfortable veins that made Toji’s heart stop for a brief second.
This isn’t Megumi. Megumi doesn’t get like this, he’s never seen him like this. But what has Toji seen him like? He’s seen gloomy, stoic Megumi.
That’s all he sees on his fleeting visits.
Toji pulls the car over and Megumi scarpers out as quickly as he can. Toji takes his time turning off the car, finding a pair of sunglasses in the glove compartment before stepping out to tend to his child. He approaches him slowly. Wallet, phone and keys all rested skilfully in one hand.
Megumi doubles over, clear vomit evading the pit of his stomach. Toji grimaces at the sight, what the hell was wrong with him? His son is trembling, still. When he isn’t vomiting he's taking in sharp, heavy breaths, he almost sounds like he's screaming.
The desperation in his inhales are so eerie, like someone dragging a sharp knife down a windowpane.
Megumi is disgusted with himself.
It's all too much for him, reminiscing on his childhood and the closure he’d never get. The fact that his father thinks he’s allowed to pop into his life if and when he chooses.
He expects Megumi to drop everything and anything he’s doing to spend time with him and do as he’s told.
And the worst part? He does it.
He fights him every step of the way, but still, he does it.
Why does he do it? He hates him. Toji knows he hates him, too. Every conversation they have is surface level toleration or a heated argument. But Toji knows, no matter what, Megumi wants to please his father. Because he left him to fend for himself, he left him without a friend in the world. So, whenever Megumi gets the chance, he wants to prove himself to his father.
That’s why.
Megumi needs his father’s approval.
“The fuck’s wrong with you kid? Panic attack?” Toji questions as he towers above his son.
Megumi collapses onto his backside, mouth agape as he manages to calm himself down. He wants to rip his dad’s throat out for talking to him like that. But he doesn’t have the energy. He just can’t.
“Shut up, Toji.” he commands, making his father roll his eyes. An act of petty defiance, to call him by his name instead of dad. It doesn’t bother Toji, he couldn’t care less. He knows he’s a shit dad, he didn’t sign up for it anyway. He doesn’t care, he probably never will.
“Get up, there’s a coffee shop over there I’ll get you some water.” he tells him, hoping the offer will be enough to entice him off the ground.
Megumi blanks him though, still focusing on his breathing and trying to coax himself into feeling better so he can go home. Toji isn’t a man who likes to be ignored, Megumi is lucky he’s his kid right now. Anyone else would be in for a world of hurt.
But instead, Toji slowly raises his foot off the ground. He inches his dirty dust clad shoe closer to his boy’s face. Megumi side eyes the muddy soled loafer, piercing green eyes threatening him to back off.
However, Megumi forgets who he inherited those intimidating emerald orbs from.
Toji doesn’t take lightly to threats, and he hasn’t gotten where he is by being frightened by a simple look. His filthy shoe is millimetres from Megumi’s face, “I said get up kid.” and with Megumi ignoring him yet again, Toji has to make good on his threat. He gently kicks the bottom of his foot into his son’s face. Megumi grabs his ankle and pushes him away, springing to his feet soon after to ball his fists in his dad’s shirt.
“Why the fuck are you here now? What do you want? You only come when you want something so out with it.” Megumi hisses, his face mere inches from his dad’s. Toji raises his hand in surrender with that signature shit-eating grin on his face. But Megumi’s fists grasp harder, for the first time in his life he feels strong. Stronger than him. He shoves him backwards and pins him against the car. “What do you want Toji?!”
Toji, however, is over this little game. Megumi never has been, and never will be, stronger than him. He’d never hurt his son. He does love him, in his own fucked up way. He’s his after all. But he doesn’t love him enough to let him disrespect him in his quest for validation and superiority. He grabs his junior by the base of the neck, removing his sunglasses and peering intensely into his child’s eyes. Fear shudders through Megumi, and he lets go. But Toji doesn’t.
“Get in the fuckin’ car. Dumbass. I’ll go get you a drink,” and with that he releases Megumi from his grip, crossing the road seamlessly. Commanding the traffic around him to stop as he approaches the coffee shop.
Megumi gets into the car. It’s hot. Fuck, it’s hot. His breathing is intensifying again. He hastily removes his jacket with shaky hands.
His father has only been gone for a few minutes, but his gaze is flitting between the windscreen window and the coffee shop. He balls his jacket up and shoves his face into it, screaming all of the air in his lungs out into the material. He just screams. It feels like he can’t stop, the oxygen will never be out of him.
He needs it out, he needs to breathe out this day, this experience.
But he can’t.
It’s lingering in his lungs, itching away at him. Little spindly legs crawling around inside of him like spiders, biting and tapping inside of him searching for a way out.
There’s no way out. He can’t breathe. He wants to rip his fucking heart out and let his dad drive and reverse over it until it’s unrecognisable.
His head drops between his knees, his hands interlocking behind his head trapping tufts of his unruly onyx locks.
He startles a little when his father opens the car door and sits behind the wheel. Toji could swear he saw him jump a little again when he slams the door shut behind him.
“Here,” his dad speaks, holding two bottles out to him. Megumi peers up to see them. One is water, and the other is a chilled glass bottle of beer. Why did he get him this? “Might steady yer fuckin’ nerves. What happened to you? Never seen y’like this before,” Toji states, not expecting a direct answer from Megumi, but daring to ask anyway.
Megumi twists the plastic cap off his water bottle. He doesn’t sip, he gulps. And he gulped, and gulped, and gulped, until the plastic bottle was contorting and creasing as he sucked the air out and his heavy fist gripped tighter around the soft material. Toji offers a teasing ‘think ya got it’ hoping it would make Megumi give up trying to get the last lingering droplets out of the plastic container.
He was right, he did get it.
It just isn’t enough. It does nothing to drown that unbearable itch inside of him. So, he slouched back in his seat, at least a little calmer for having something else to focus on.
“I’m fucked up.”
And he laughs.
It's manic. If you could see him now, God if you could see what a pathetic miserable shell he is right now.
It’s symbolic really, how insanely he’s laughing. You’d actually see a similarity between the two of you. He was almost laughing as insanely as you had been as you destroyed his artwork, probably more so.
He's unhinged. And for the first time in his life, he thinks Toji is scared. His face hurts from the way his cheeks are pulling as he laughs. If he was normal, his stomach would be aching. Because that’s what is meant to happen when people laugh. Right? When people truly laugh at something, you feel it in your belly. But fuck, Megumi isn’t normal.
He’s breaking apart.
Toji grabs his shoulder, and in an instant the laughter stops. Megumi’s face turns, his eyes snap to find his father’s matching ones. His smile is gone, but his eyebrow quivers as he studies his father’s features.
“Oh, fuck, scared you huh?” Megumi asks. Toji scoffs and lets go of him, starting the car up to drive away instead. But before he does, he takes his sons beer bottle between his teeth and bites the lid off. He spits it down on the floor of his car beneath him and gives it to Megumi. And Megumi drinks it, seeming to enjoy the taste.
That’s doing it.
That’s drowning his demons.
His attention is back on Toji as he’s driving.
And looking at him now, that is the father he knows.
He’s just driving as if he doesn’t have a care in the world. Like his son hasn’t just totally snapped before his very eyes. He’s snapped already, so why not push him a little more. Megumi punches his arm, causing Toji’s steering to waver.
“Stupid little idiot, fucks wrong with you? Don’t fuckin’ touch me while I’m drivin’.” he barks at his son. But he doesn’t stop. He punches him again, again and again. He slams harshly on the breaks, engulfing his sons whole face in one fist. He smothers his face and forcefully pushes him back into the passenger side door. “Hey! Did I fuckin’ stutter?”
“Did I fuckin’ scare you dad? You looked a little concerned you piece of shit! Ya fuckin’ deadbeat…” Megumi yells, fighting back the tears that were building, slithering behind his eyes threatening to spill at any moment.
“Pfft. Grow up Megumi. You’re not fifteen anymore,”
“Yeah, I was fucked up then never mind now.” Megumi spits at him.
“God, shut up.” Toji seethes as he softly slaps Megumi on the side of his face, pointing to the tip of his nose, demanding his attention. “You’re not fucked up. You’re fine. Y’think everyone doesn’t get like this? Y’think I never get like this? I wanna rip my fuckin’ skin off when I think about how fucked everything is for too long.” he tells his son sternly, trying to be calm but firm with him.
“You—” Megumi manages to croak out before Toji interrupts.
“Yeah, me. I fuckin’ left you. Never said sorry did I? Would you believe me if I said I was sorry? I don’t know if I am kid, that’s the problem. Had to fuckin’ split, couldn’t handle it. But if it helps, sure. I’m sorry. It was fucked.” Toji tells him.
Megumi is in awe.
This is the most they’d ever talked in their lives. Everything they discuss is surface level pleasantries that are meaningless. And he apologised. He can’t apologise. He’s said the word sorry but the itch is still there. He doesn’t mean it, he said himself he doesn’t mean it. This can’t be it, this can’t be everything Megumi has been waiting to hear to fix him. Anger and resentment he’s clung onto for so long, dying as he awaited the moment he’d finally get an apology or an explanation.
And this was it.
This was all he’d waited for, and it wasn’t good enough. It’ll never be good enough. He’s going to be stuck with this itch for the rest of his life.
“Are you kidding me? You think that’s good enough?” Megumi questions, fists balled as he argues with himself whether to punch Toji again. “I’m sorry, but I’m not really sorry because I had too. Huh, asshole? You really think that’s good enough?!” Megumi bellows, lip quivering as he clenches his teeth together.
“Don’tcha get it? Idiot. Nothing I say’ll ever be good enough. I fuckin’ left you alone after your mother died. Whether I mean it or not, it won’t stop fuckin’ hurtin’ kid. You got more than I ever did. The Zen’in used to lock me up and beat the shit out of me.” he angles the right side of his face and points to the scar on his lip, “they gave me this for the pleasure, think I ever got a fuckin’ sorry? No. Fake or sincere, nothin’. Think holdin’ a grudge is gonna fix anything?”
Megumi has been vibrating with anger the entire conversation.
All he wants to do was smash the glass of beer he has and stab the jagged shards into Toji’s neck. He's furious.
There is some truth to his words, sure, but he's so fucking casual. Like Megumi is meant to take everything he's saying as gospel, accepting it as absolute truth and living his life by them from now on.
He’s been vibrating with anger through the entire conversation, until he thought of you. He can’t smile; but his clenching jaw relaxes when visions of you enter his mind.
It's just as well, Toji thinks if he clenched any harder his son’s teeth would smash to pieces. It was something Toji said that made him think of you.
Think holdin’ a grudge is gonna fix anything?
No. But it helps. He’s sure you’d have the same thought process as Toji, you’d be desperate to end the vendetta Megumi has against you. But if he didn’t hate his father, if he didn’t hate you, how else would he cope?
How else would he control the itch?
Megumi allows his body to go limp, looking over to Toji with a side-eye glance. He huffs, allowing his chest to rise and fall in one heavy dramatic breath.
“What do you want, dad?”
Toji kisses his teeth, contemplating how to speak. How to ask. But Megumi has honestly had enough of fucking around today, dancing around subjects and rowing with each other. He just wants to know, and that is something Toji could plainly see in his son’s defeated body. So, he comes right out and says it, not wanting to beat around the bush.
“Tomorrow,” he begins, looking around at everything in the car other than his son. But his gaze settles, their emerald eyes meeting once again. “There’s a big shindig, all of the Zen’in are goin’. You need to be there.”
Tumblr media
And that’s how Megumi found himself in a town car on his way to your parent’s new manor home.
Toji didn’t offer him a ride, of course.
Megumi suspects his father will be feeling uncomfortable after their argument yesterday, but in reality Toji is having a good parenting moment. He felt it necessary to give his son some space to cool down after their heated conversation.
The closer the car got to the ridiculously enormous manor; butterflies joined the itching in the pit of Megumi’s stomach. He tries to clear his throat and take deep breaths, but it wasn’t helping.
He fishes around in his inside jacket pockets. He pulls out a mirror from the right pocket and a baggie of cocaine and a razor from the other.
The car slows as it pulls into the gates, manoeuvring around the intricate landscaping. He takes the opportunity to make a white powdery line atop the mirror resting on his lap. He doesn’t care what the driver thinks of him, he’s sure Toji does the same if not worse whenever he's in here.
He snorts it, slowly. It’s been a while since he’s let this be a vice of his.
Megumi isn’t stupid, no, he’s careful. He will be careful with his vices. But when the car stops below the staircase that lead to the daunting double doors, he sags back into the plush leather seats of the car.
“D’ya mind if I just wait here for a minute?” Megumi asks, the man shakes his head, much to Megumi’s delight.
It’s been a while since he’s been to a Zen’in get together. When he and Tsumiki moved away, he managed to avoid them and Toji like the plague.
It's harrowing, really, that he had to walk into a strangers home, alone. To see a family who did nothing but chastise and disapprove. A family he barely knew but still felt it necessary to try and control aspects of his life and look down on each and every little thing he did.
But he relaxes. He wipes his nose of the white dust and takes a deep breath. He gets out of the car, slamming it aggressively behind him. He ascended the stairs. Breathing shallow breaths as he prepares himself for the hell he's about to endure.
He rests his finger on the doorbell, he can’t seem to take his finger off it. Air is knocked from his lungs when the door opens, almost being ripped from its hinges.
What the fuck are you two doing here?
He can’t help but stare, completely in awe at the sight. You’re looking at him differently, like you know him. Like you’ve had a look into the window of his damaged soul.
What the fuck are you staring at?
Megumi clears his throat, and you're staring soon turns to dismay, irritation. Megumi thinks you’re just processing what is happening, the unlikely coincidence of it all.
Are you still scared of him?
Terrified of what he’ll do to you?
Or are you safe now, because dear old Yuji is here?
Megumi takes in the sight of both of you, but drinks up the vision of you. He can’t believe it. You’re really here. He opens his mouth, smiling sadistically, knowing whatever he does will get a reaction out of you.
“Well well, what do we have here?” Megumi questions, crossing his arms across his chest as he waits for a response.
Yuuji looks feral, like he wants to skin him alive. It’s sad, really, that his best friend has let a useless cunt come between them. Megumi won’t disown him, but he knows Yuuji won’t claim him as his friend anymore. He’ll always be Megumi’s. Yuuji pulls your hand to bring you closer to his body. He’s sure Yuuji can feel you shaking like a frightened lamb against him, because even from this distance, Megumi can see it.
“Get out of the way Fushiguro,” Yuuji demands, holding your body as tightly as he can to give you the feeling of safety you’re so desperate for.
But of course, Megumi doesn’t move.
He doesn’t sidestep to allow you past.
He just stares. And Yuuji’s temper flares when he stops staring at you both, but through you. Because a dastardly grin stretches across Megumi’s pretty face.
While Yuuji is staring, shaking and furious, while you’re trembling, terrified and on the brink of tears, he sees who he can only assume are the owners of the house, who he can only assume are your parents, are walking through the foyer and approaching you. It’s like he’s watching a movie in slow motion. And it just gets better when his own dad lollygags behind them, leaning on a doorframe further down the hall as he watches your mother and father chase after you.
Megumi knows you’re not going anywhere.
Megumi knows your parents will beg, plead for you to stay. What will people say if you leave the party earlier? They’ll be the talk of high society. A simple, elegant party couldn’t go off without a hitch because their selfish daughter ruined it all.
No.
That’s not you.
The few brief days he’s known you, something he can see about you is clear. You, perfect, sweet girl, are a people pleaser.
Megumi’s smiling. And he’s smiling hard.
Because you aren’t going anywhere.
Nina Ferrante is the OC from my series Heart, Body and Soul
“I told you to wear sunscreen.”
Sitting on her bed behind her boyfriend, Nina looked at his reddened shoulders with a disapproving frown on her face. Tommy, being his headstrong self, had refused the sunscreen she had tried so hard to convince him to put on, claiming he had no need for it. He discovered soon enough that the sun could burn even Thomas Shelby himself. And of course now he’d never hear the end of it.
Fed up with yet another ‘I told you so’ on Nina’s part, he scoffed, rolling his eyes. “Yeah you were right, now put the goddamn thing on my back.”
Nina raised her eyebrows, stopping with the spray bottle of thermal water in mid-air. Needless to say, she hadn’t liked the impolite response, and sure as hell wouldn’t have let it slide. A mischievous grin grew on her lips, and she planted her free hand on his sunburnt shoulder, drawing a hiss out of him. “You know, you should be nicer, considering I’m the one who’s trying to help you.”
He turned slightly to grab her wrist and take her hand off his aching skin. Despite the clear attempt to hold it in, a laugh threatened to escape her lips. “You find it funny?” He snarled, glaring at her.
“Yes, I find it in fact funny.”
They stubbornly held each other’s gaze for a moment, before Tommy eventually gave up and let go of her wrist. He sighed, fixating his eyes on the wall in front of him. “Please?” He mumbled with a hint of annoyance, making her smile in satisfaction.
Finally, she sprayed the thermal water on his shoulders and back, the coolness giving him a feeling of instant relief. He’d never admit it out loud, but he regretted not having listened to her earlier that day. Now he’d have to go around looking like a fucking lobster. He didn’t know what burned more, whether his skin or his pride.
After she had sprayed some more on his chest and face, Nina got up from the bed and approached one of the bags resting on the desk. She searched inside it for a while, a few Italian curses leaving her lips. “I can’t find it,” she murmured.
“With the mess you have inside that thing, it would be odd if you found something, love.”
She ignored his teasing, keeping on looking inside the bag. But it wasn’t long before she lost her patience and emptied its content on the wooden surface, the noise making Winston jump from his spot on a chair. Tommy shook his head with an amused smile on his face.
“There it is,” she said victoriously, showing him a tube of lotion. “After sun lotion,” she clarified, tossing in back in the now empty bag. “Put it on later.”
“‘Right,” he mumbled, carefully lying down on the cool bedsheets. No use in putting up a fight. His head was starting to ache.
“You know, you might get a sunstroke,” Nina started again, earning herself a grunt of irritation.
“I already said you were right, what else do you want?” He looked at her through half-closed lids.
“Nothing,” she shrugged. “I’m just enjoying my victory.”
Deciding it would be best to just ignore her, Tommy closed his eyes, hoping a few hours of sleep would do the trick and ease the throbbing in his head. Nina, on her part, took mercy on him and stopped with her unrelenting teasing. He had learned his lesson, after all.
But just when he was about to fall asleep, Winston jumped on his stomach, planting his paws on the sensitive, reddened skin.
“Fucking hell.”
