Introducing: The Which MXTX Character Was/Would Be Most Insufferable Online Tournament Bracket
Beginning the evening of August 23rd, 2024 (USA time), Iâll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu web novel character was or would be most insufferable if given access to the internet.
FAQ:
Why this poll theme?
I thought it would be fun to run another big MXTX tournament bracket, since the bugpoll last year was a blast, and this was the funniest theme I could manage to think of.
Why isn't Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu in the bracket?
Given what we know about our dear Peerless Cucumber, I fear an SQQ sweep would be a foregone conclusion if I included him. Therefore, after the bracket finds a winner, I'll hold a bonus round and pit the winner against Shen Yuan to determine the true most internet-insufferable character.
What is wrong with you?
Yeah.
My goal is to hold one round per day every day for a week, but I'm contending with a full-time work schedule, so things may get slightly more stretched out than that. I'll also be splitting the first round into Round 1 Part 1 (the left side of the bracket) and Round 1 Part 2 (the right side of the bracket) to avoid spamming people's dashes with 32 separate polls in one day.
If youâd like to either search for or blacklist posts related to this event, all of mine will be tagged with âMXTX insufferapoll.â
The full list of matches is under the readmore here. Happy voting!

Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao have a such a stereotypically girl friendshipâdonât get mad, let me finish.
They share everything* with each other (naughty Xichen, gossiping!), theyâre all about feelings and validation and talking things out. So much mutual support!
*Except! Jin Guangyao is a genuine Mean Girl⌠Yeah, he genuinely cares for Xichen, but just about everyone else is fair game. He seems friendly towards everyone, but heâs the type who can call you bestie and then end your whole career and then still call you bestie. Even with Xichen he just shares what he thinks he wants to hear, bc making him happy is more important than honesty, right?
By contrast, Nie Mingjue falls into a more macho social mould. Heâs mad at you or heâs not, no subtle grudges. I think this is some of the source of lingering conflict between him and JGY (besides the obvious moral issues and grievances). They kind of speak different languages when it comes to interpersonal conflict and so they talk past each other to disastrous effects.
Why are they like this? Some of it is probably innate, but thereâs also the circumstances of their upbringing to contend with. I called LXC & JGYâs relationship a âgirl friendshipâ, but thereâs nothing inherently girly about it. A lot of this comes down to how societies teach boys vs girls to regulate and express their emotions and relate/respond to the emotions of others. Women get a rep for empathy and men for being no-nonsense, but then women might be more likely to use the âsilent treatmentâ and expect you to automatically know why theyâre mad, or men might be considered emotionally oblivious. This is trained behavior!
And speaking of trained behavior: JGY grew up in a brothel. I feel like a lot of attention gets paid to how JGY learned subservient behavior and people-pleasing as a survival skill, but I havenât seen anyone talking about how that brothel seems like a HOTBED of backstabby mean girl social dynamics. Everyone is bestie until theyâd make a better stepping stone. JGY grew up in a place where the socially disadvantaged had to turn on their own to ingratiate themselves to the powerful. Pick me girl behavior was a matter of survival, and young MY learned that lesson well. These lessons transfer well to the Jin sectâs world of court intrigues.
LXCâs emotional sensitivity may in part come from his caregiver role as a big brother and Wangjiâs longtime social-emotional interpreter. Doesnât seem to be learned from LQR. I have less to say about Xichen as I feel that less is known, but I will say that his highly controlled upbringing didnât prepare him to see through emotionally manipulative people like JGY or NHS.
Mingjue, as heir and then leader of an especially martial sect, probably got the Men Donât Cry brand of emotional education. Huaisang, as the spare and not the heir, seems to have wiggled out of this early training. Heâs the baby of the family, and he isnât shy about it.
NONE OF THIS is to discount the role played by their core personalities, but lived experience makes us who we are. Social-emotional learning is often very gendered in patriarchal societies and I just think itâs fascinating to contemplate the impacts on a personâs development. And a disclaimer: having more feminine social-emotional learning doesnât outright determine JGYâs (or anyoneâs) gender or sexuality, but the impacts on his worldview are, I think, worth considering.
#jin guangyao#lan xichen#nie mingjue#nie huaisang#social emotional learning#Long ass dissertation#I just had a lot of thoughts about this

MORE nieyao omegaverse shenanigans!!!
please imagine a nieyao (or 3zun) ABO AU where jin guangyao is an omega and is constantly taking scent-blockers. not because he's hiding the fact that he's an omega - that pigeon flew the coop a long time ago and it certainly isn't helping his standing in jinlintai, unfortunately - but because he's violently allergic to the very concept of broadcasting his feelings to everyone in jinlintai, all of the time, via scent.
he's not even the only one! it's not uncommon for people to be on scent-blockers in jinlintai for this exact reason. it's not amazing for politicking to be physically incapable of maintaining a pheromonal poker face when someone says something that you just vehemently disagree with! besides, it's rude to make people deal with your emotions all the time like that. not to mention the reputation jin-zongzhu has around omegas...
but it's very much a jin cultural thing that jin guangyao adopted after the sunshot campaign. other sects have their own ways about it, but the nie in particular maintain a sort of pride about their dynamics just as they do about their history as butchers, and to hide to that extent in the unclean realm is frequently assumed to be inherently dishonest. why would you use scent-blockers if you didn't have bad intentions?
(of course, many people use them anyway - milder ones, ones that change a scent rather than eliminating it entirely as jin politesse dictates, an extra layer of secrecy not just about the scent itself but the fact that what is being communicated is manufactured - but nie mingjue has never had to consider something like that.)
and thus this becomes one of the reasons that nie mingjue cannot reconcile jin guangyao with his perception of his former deputy, meng yao. the lack of scent - it makes jin guangyao seem cold, distant, fake - seemingly an entirely different person.
except.
at some point.
perhaps jin guangyao is off his blockers, or more likely, one day nie mingjue's alpha hindbrain has had enough of these oppositional shenanigans and simply locks onto jin guangyao, labeling him irrevocably as 'MATE!' in nie mingjue's brain and making him so much more sensitive to jin guangyao - likely without jin guangyao even realizing.
so now nie mingjue can suddenly tell, at least in the cases of stronger emotions, exactly what jin guangyao's body is trying to broadcast.
when he realizes what happened, he expects to detect... he's not even sure. smugness. irritation? maybe even hate.
what he gets is fear, and fear, and more fear. jin guangyao is just so scared, all of the time, that it drives almost everything else into non-existence as far as his pheromones are concerned. he simply never feels safe. it's so bad that it's giving nie mingjue a sympathy headache any time he's around his youngest sworn brother.
and perhaps at some point in the past, nie mingjue had even gotten into it with jin guangyao about the scent blockers - nie mingjue perceiving dishonesty vs jin guangyao feeling frustrated that once again da-ge is looking down on him for something that jin guangyao feels is imperative for his own safety - and jin guangyao had said that, well, nie mingjue accuses him of manipulation and lying so often anyway, how is he supposed to trust that if nie mingjue could smell anything that he wouldn't just assume it's part of jin guangyao's supposed manipulations anyway?
(it doesn't help jin guangyao's frustration that nie mingjue insists that hiding one's scent is dishonesty when, actually, jin guangyao could do with the oppressive 'angry alpha' that often layers all over the place on top of nie mingjue's already large physique and looming presence being toned down a little bit, thanks)
and nie mingjue was like, that's ridiculous, that's not something you can manually control (jin guangyao just smiled at him, the same way he smiles at nie huaisang when he thinks the young master is being naive) - except now he's realizing that maybe jin guangyao had at least a little bit of a point, in the sense that it turns out that it's actually really difficult to be righteously angry at someone who so vividly feels unsafe and afraid whenever you express that, in a way that jin guangyao's crocodile tears never got to him. he feels a sudden kindred spirit with lan xichen.
tl;dr: nobody gets kicked down any stairs, and nie mingjue is forcibly familiarized with what, exactly, jin guangyao's emotional perspectiive is at least, as well as finding himself curbing his own temper because yelling at someone who is smiling at you while circulating their spiritual energy to stop themselves from hyperventilating about it just. feels really bad. nie mingjue is used to feeling like he is in the right and he doesn't know what to do with this. he is right! but... surely being shown the righteous path shouldn't be making jin guangyao feel like this.
(and maybe nie mingjue picks up on the sudden spike of increased stress - and, wow, he didn't know that jin guangyao could be more stressed, isn't there a maximum? - when jin guangshan starts pressing his bastard son to 'take care' of the nie mingjue problem.)
#mdzs#the untamed#nieyao#nie mingjue#jin guangyao#meng yao#ABO#omegaverse#storytelling posts#my writing#personal#long post#might break my streak of not writing abo fics and turn this into a oneshot at some point#maybe not#I love the idea of this being an aspect of cultural differences#but also just subjecting jin guangyao forcibly to the mortifying ordeal of being known#while also forcing nie mingjue out of his ironclad mindset in a way he cannot argue against

You said nhs is a pantser not a planner. As in 'flying by the seat of'? Or is there another meaning?
That's it exactly! The 'planner vs pantser' dichotomy is a common idea in writer circles. Quoth Publishers Weekly:
Novelists tend to fall into two categories: âplanners,â who develop outlines before they begin writing, and those who donât, often referred to in self-publishing circles as âpantsers.â The term, which comes from the phrase âby the seat of your pants,â refers to novelists who work without any kind of synopsis, outline, or character development work done before they begin writing.
To literally copy the text of a post I made 3+ years ago:
hot take: Nie Huaisang is not actually good at Xanatos Gambits - elaborate planning, setting up dominoes or chess games or whatever metaphor you want and letting it all fall into place, every option a win. Nie Huaisang is very, very good at:
appearing nonthreatening
manipulating a scene, mostly via use of feigned helplessness and redirection
gathering information
throwing rocks at a hornetâs nests and then reacting very quickly to stay just slightly in control of the consequences, mostly using the tools above
Thatâs his modus operandi over and over. Getting Wei Wuxian resurrected - the biggest rock-to-a-hornetâs-nest of all. Sending Jin Guangyao a letter revealing Qin Suâs parentage, basically saying his days were numbered - yup. Getting Nie Mingjueâs body all together to storm off to the temple - yep. But I refuse to believe that he predicted the results of any of this well enough to plan - oh, the general scope, sure. WWX would go haring off to solve the mystery, almost certainly picking up LWJ because, you know, true love and righteousness. JGY would do something to overreach; that was clearly the goal of the letter. And NMJ would have the chance to get his own vengeance. But Nie Huaisang clearly made sure he was on the scene to manage the consequences of all of these - thatâs not the actions of a man with masterful, predictive plans. Thatâs a very clever man with, like, alright plans, a decent sense of timing on when to land a political killing blow, whoâs really good at winging it.

one of the most useful workplace time management tools i was ever taught by a colleague is this little graph for determining whether a task is urgent, important, or both. because there is a difference between something being urgent and something being important, and that distinction matters!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cbd926e10112828c57bc4c6b5616b1a2/9c99ca85d97f117e-54/s540x810/fc04fcb097c2d6b7802adeba697e0af82de7cfbc.jpg)
(forgive my terrible finger scribbling, iâm on my phone)
urgent things are time-sensitive tasks that need to be completed soonâbut their importance can vary wildly. (example: processing workplace timesheets so everyone gets paid on time = urgent and important. setting aside time to do mandatory work training = important, but not urgent.) important tasks are normally no-fail items that have to be completed so your department, or your business, can keep functioning, but their time-sensitivity, their urgency, is going to vary. (example: short notice preparation for your clientâs criminal court appearance = very important and also urgent. writing a new policy for how your org handles sensitive information in their business records = very important, but not necessarily urgent. unless youâve left things until the eleventh hour, of course, but even then, you would never forego processing timesheets to work on a policy, unless you want to have a bunch of justifiably furious employees outside your office (or trying to call you on zoom or teams) demanding to know why they havenât been paid.
i find this tool very useful for managing my time at my job, both because my brain is a bag of cats even on a good day, and also because when other people suddenly show up on my radar insisting that i drop everything to help them with their work, i need to understand just how their work will fit into my existing workload. no, i donât tell them to their face that their urgent matter isnât important. but i will do the above exercise to figure out where on my daily priority list to slot this new task or series of tasks.
anyway i think jin guangyao probably tried to explain the important vs urgent distinction very gently to nie huaisang at least once after huaisang burst in on an important meeting wailing for san-ge to rescue him from grain tariff negotiations, but it never took. all things are both urgent and important when you are the most didi.
#jin guangyao#nie huaisang#i donât think iâm actually going to tag this as meta because this is mostly a very long set-up to a lukewarm fandom joke#he did crimes??? good for him đ#let him have birds!! đď¸

Writing patterns
Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Thank you @jaimebluesq for the tag! :D
Jin Guangyao was having a week. (Other Modes of Control)
In the eighteenth year of the reign of Xuanzheng, two armies met in the mountains of Qiongqi Path. (Lengths We Go To)
âWhat do you make of this?â Nie Mingjue asks casually, gesturing to the newly hanged scroll in his office. (The Way of the Nie)
âFei Liu, you need to drink this,â Mei Changsu says, holding up the cup. (Two vs. One)
Banyue knew it was strange, but she felt happy when Pei Xiu invited her to hunt bandits on his day off. (Day Off)
He finds Mingâguang in the very first temple, the two pieces displayed on the altar in place of a statue. (Revenge Before Reason. And Also After It)
Thereâs a new hobby in Heaven. (Commiseration)
Nie Huaisang was the unluckiest person in the world. (And Forward, Though We Cannot See)
âSo did it really happen like that?â Rong Guang asks, splayed out across the sofa. (Pei Ming Week Drabbles)
There are over 1000 contacts saved in Shi Qingxuanâs phone. (Last Resort Backup Plan)
As for patterns... I think I either start with dialogue or some kind of exaggeration. Or getting directly into it in the case of the drabbles.
Incidentally the fic I started earlier today is also more on the exaggerated dramatics side xD

Confession: I've nearly dropped out of CQL fandom because people have gotten so much Worse about Nies vs JGY in the last year or so that I can't stomach it. I like JGY and NHS but really really do not like NMJ, and it seems like the latter is a dealbreaker with all parties because I feel bad for NHS insofar as NMJ also victimizes him and he's so fucking In It that his family treating him like shit completely consumes his life in a dead-end revenge quest in which he takes it out on everyone else while attempting to target JGY, and everyone else is like. Well that clearly just means he loves his brother so much, OR he's just complicit/willing to accept anything from NMJ. Either way these two are joined at the hip forever, Do Not Separate, and any inclination that maybe NHS would've been better off, and done far less harm, if he was less Stuck with his own family (going down with the ship there!) is shot down because he Sided With NMJ In The End (and is privileged enough to *checks notes* live with someone who is explosive/abusive towards him but also dotes on him allegedly, which cancels the former out), so everything else is impossible to have ever changed, unnecessary or undeserved. It's like if he liked or was loyal to NMJ then he deserves no sympathy for having been collateral in NMJ's outbursts, or he wasn't hurt enough compared to others for that to count. I don't like the brother who terrorizes his sibling, I'm upset by the scenes in CQL and FJ of him blowing up at NHS, destroying his stuff, terrifying him, AND the scenes of him attacking JGY. I'm sensitive to the ~less bad~ stuff with NHS because they are siblings. I feel bad for both the terrorized-but-loyal sibling and the even-more-terrorized and more-threatened sworn brother, and that's got no place anywhere.
Anyways confession goes here bc you're the only person I've ever seen talk about NMJ in terms of explosive anger for which he does bear some responsibility in terms of dealing with the fallout, and talk about how "if you don't want to be hurt then just don't be there when I'm angry, and if I can't help it you can't hold it against me" fucking sucks as a framework, and even if you don't share this take on NHS (which is fair, like I said I don't think anyone probably does) you'd at least get why NMJ is so... much (derogatory) in ways that aren't solely because he's a shit employer/sworn brother.
Nonny, you are so valid and cool for this ask and I love you.
I... really hate how, because the actor tears up a lot and seems like a nice person whose personality inflects his acting, fandom has decided that Nie Mingjue is actually a sweet, sensitive and reasonable person who never "really" treated anyone too badly. And haha Nie Huaisang is such a brat! Like. I don't talk much about it but that honestly makes me see red.
I... look. I think anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of a mentor figure, parent figure, or sibling's explosive anger issues is going to project our shit onto this dynamic. And in my case that... unfortunately comes along with the fantasy of it actually being possible to make that person see what they're doing, and understand, and stop so that you can still have, or have again, the parts of that relationship that are/were good without having to worry about your safety and tiptoe around them. So I often wind up giving Nie Mingjue more credit or energy than is really warranted, because I want Nie Huaisang to have a brother who shows care for him in a way that isn't yelling at him, threatening him, and controlling him, and I want Jin Guangyao to be able to keep that deep respect and affection you see in his eyes in some of their early scenes.
And, like I said, you are very correct about Nie Huaisang. Idk I don't... like to label character dynamics as abuse unless it's explicit. Partially because I feel like it makes it hard to talk about the dynamic, in that it supersedes and flattens every conversation into "person A bad, person B good/helpless," and because in my experience, when someone calls a dynamic abusive, or even says it reminds them of something they experienced that they're calling abuse, people get REALLY mad and REALLY nasty really fast and I want to enjoy myself here lol.
That being said, yeah, frankly, a lot of how Nie Mingjue treats Nie Huaisang, if you just described what is happening without attaching character names, most people would think was deeply fucked! I think a lot of "Nie bros" people write it off by blaming Jin Guangyao, or say "oh he didn't really mean it" because... Nie Huaisang continually runs away and refuses to do saber practice? Which isn't the evidence they think it is.
The place I have a hard time with Nie Huaisang is that, while he didn't want to be a cultivator, especially in the saber style, he was given literally the best education and opportunities in the world, despite sucking and not wanting them. And then you have Meng Yao, who wants to go to school so bad and would be so diligent and happy and good! And instead he has to do jobwork, which involves taking care of Nie Huaisang and his education. And unfortunately the extent to which he gets to be a pampered little princeling turns me off the character big time. Which doesn't negate the incredibly fucked up situation he's in with his brother, or his suffering there. I think also the way he responds to Nie Mingjue's... everything by kind of antagonizing him and being a refusnik also pushes some buttons for me for reasons I don't want to get into, while Jin Guangyao's waffling between appeasement and trying to reason with him resonates big time. And then of course the "I have turned your explosive rage into a bomb and the next time you turn it on me, you will explode and die. Just fyi." Is like. Amazing, Incredible, Phenomenal, Iconic, etc.
Idk this is not the first fandom I've been in where there's been a like. Physically much larger and stronger character who has serious anger issues that they externalize onto characters who are visibly weaker and smaller, and somehow a large chunk of the fandom has decided that actually, it's the big scary yelling violent one who is so sad and in need of gentle handling and hugs and maybe if everyone stopped being so mean to them etc. And the weaker character, when they deploy the methods available to them to defend themselves, are like. Evil conniving manipulators who are playing the victim card and 100% emotionally abusing the person... being violent towards them. It's weird and it keeps happening and I don't get it other than that it might be like... people love twists and the unexpected, and so "what if the person who looks like the dangerous one here actually wasn't!" seems like good storytelling?
But yeah. I don't think Nie Mingjue is like. Evil or a one-dimensional monster or anything, but I also wish fandom was more willing to really dig into his explosive anger issues and the negative effects that has on his brother and Jin Guangyao (and Lan Xichen tbqh).

before nie mingjue really got deepfried by the saber sickness (+ jiggy poison combo), the text still describes how nie huaisang would hide behind jin guangyao when nie mingjue got annoyed with him. fast-forward a few years and now jin ling is also hiding behind the same jin guangyao when jiang cheng gets annoyed with him. one has to wonder if this makes jin guangyao nostalgic.

Round 2 is Here! The Which MXTX Character Was/Would Be Most Insufferable Online Tournament Bracket
For an explanation of what this poll's deal is or links to completed matches, look here. Otherwise, letâs have some fun facts about round 1:
The closest match from round 1 was Lan Xichen vs Xiao Xingchen, in which Xiao Xingchen won by just 2.8%. Xichen was winning this one for a good while at the beginning, but the Xingchen campaigners really put in an effort to turn it around.
The biggest win margin in round 1 was Jian Lan vs Qi Rong, in which Qi Rong won a whopping 95.3% of the vote. Absolutely nobody wants to interact with that guy.
The most total votes in round 1 went to Luo Binghe vs Wang Lingjiao, with 785 votes between them. As Shen Yuan would say, everybody has a hot take on the protagonist!
The fewest total votes in round 1 went to Lang Ying (Present) vs Lan Sizhui, with 257 votes between them. One of my mutuals compared this match to a fight between two dust motes, so I suppose I can't blame y'all for finding it un-compelling.
Now on to round 2! You can find the full list of links both on the original announcement post (linked above) or right here under the readmore. Happy voting :D!
