Nicky Hemmick's trauma responses are more subtle than the other Foxes. Next to Andrew, who lashes out when he's touched without consent and Aaron snaps at people with vigor, Nicky looks normal in comparison.

Just because they're subtler, doesn't mean they're not there. He always hides his phone/book/magazine when someone comes into the room. Its immediate, unthinking to shove it under his thigh or the pillow behind him because at one point that was all that was between him and Luther finding reason to look through his things. He hesitates for a few seconds, not enough to be noticeable to most, before he eats, waiting, inevitably, for someone to start a prayer. He gets nervous when people are too calm for the situation, he needs noise and energy to know that no one is mad at him. He overshares whenever he tells stories because for so, so long he had to keep everything he loved under wraps in fear of his parents taking it away. Now he has years worth of stories and experiences he never got to tell anyone out of fear-hatred-not being safe and he just wants everyone to know. Though, sometimes, he finds himself falling back into those patterns of keeping details close to his chest. He'll repeat the same stories over and over again and completely forget to mention others. It an unthinking notation, one that he forged to keep him safe even when his mouth ran a mile a minute in front of Luther. His personality—outwardly at least—is a result of this too. He's free now, and he gets to be flamboyant and loud where he never could be before. He won't forget that privilege.

Fluent Freshman - Part 07

PREVIOUS

The thing about Nicky knowing that FF knows Russian and therefore understands every single excruciatingly sweet, ear-reddingly spicy, or shockingly mundane thing that Andrew and Neil say to one another is that he is objectively the 3rd worst person to know this secret.

First place is, of course, Andrew Minyard the man who has now asked him about his family 3 times in the last week and a half. FF doesn’t really care if Andrew goes after the majority of his ‘family’ since it’s just his step brothers and step dad but Andrew might go after his Grandma too so he just says “We don’t talk” every time it comes up and deletes his entire chat history with his grandma that way Andrew won’t know how close they are. If that means that Andrew thinks that no one would look for him if he happened to disappear into a shallow grave FF doesn’t know. He’s already doomed so the least he can do is save his gran.

Second place is, of course, Captain Neil. Captain has mentioned quite a few times that a lot of people stay with friends or people they’re close with over Thanksgiving break. It’s meaner than Captain Neil usually would be off of the Court reminding FF that he has friends but none close enough who would want to spend a holiday with him. He plans to go see his Gran for Thanksgiving and she plans to feed him a truly ridiculous amount of food. It’s the same plan he’s had pretty much every year since he was 13.

Third place is Nicky Hemmick. Nicky is a very nice guy who got him a paperboy to hyperventilate into a couple times and would absolutely never intentionally OUT somebody and compromise their safety! Nicky’s talked with FF about some of his background so FF has full confidence that it’s never going to be something that Nicky intentionally outs to anyone. But there are two main reasons why Nicky is the third worst person to find out about this secret.

The first reason is that Nicky Hemmick just unabashedly loves gossip. FF has heard that with the graduation of the girls the previous year had gone Allison Reynolds who had multiple running bets on multiple teammates and a whole cache of gossip. Now Nicky has access to the ultimate accidental gossip magnet in the man who no one notices, who knows any language the Foxes speak and is too awkward to get up and leave when they start talking.

Nicky will never tell another soul his secret but he also HAS to know what Neil and Andrew are saying to one another and when Nicky lies to cover for him the charge is one free conversation translation.

He’s absolutely hooked on getting translations the since the first time he had asked what Andrew and Neil are hissing at one another one morning practice.

FF translated it awkwardly feeling like a creep and like he’s invading their privacy but Nicky had helped him eat the four slavic letter flashcards he had made up to help a friend study the language when Captain Neil and Andrew had come back early from a weekend alone in Columbia.

Nicky had even assured him afterwards that the ink was probably non-toxic and given him floss so he could get the flashcard wedged between his molars out.

So….

“Andrew’s mad that Captain Neil skipped breakfast because they’re working to make him eat something for every meal. Captain Neil’s mad because Andrew’s the one that kept him in bed so long that he didn’t have time to make anything.”

Nicky squeals in delight

The second reason, which is just compounded by the first, is the fact that Nicky had promised not to tell another Soul. However Nicky Hemmick, the romantic that he is, believes that he and his Fiancé Erik share one soul since they are soulmates. Therefore Nicky Hemmic had barely even registered FF’s tears of gratitude before he was calling Erik to tell him about FF.

The sheer number of close calls that have happened because Nicky HAS to tell Erik about something Andrew and Neil said to one another or something someone else is saying is the reason FF started getting ulcers.

Watching Nicky talk to Erik about him knowing Russian is like watching a member of the three stooges walk through a construction site blindfolded. FF nearly kills himself stopping Nicky from outing him numerous times and at the end Nicky’s smiling, unscathed and unaware of the sheer number of close calls he had sauntered through.

FF can’t wait to go home and bury his face in his grandma’s lap, stress eat two apple pies, and tell her about how he thinks he might just become an electrician or a plumber or an underwater welder because one of his language professors wants him to come and speak to a lower level class (a gen-ed with over a hundred people in it) about the usefulness of LATIN for all their majors since they can parse the meaning via root word and he had panicked and said ’Sure’.

The thing about being the only person on the team that knows that FF speaks Russian and is riddled with social anxiety is that it’s absolutely hilarious most of the time.

Every once in a while he has to step in to help the guy.

So sometimes he’ll eat flashcards. Sometimes he’ll distract his cousin with a salacious comment so FF can escape a dangerous conversation with his drunk friend. Sometimes he pushes FF to go talk to Abby about his tummy troubles. Sometimes he’ll hand over one of the brown paper bags he keeps in his backpack nowadays so FF can wheeze into it and sometimes he’ll assure his cousin that FF’s passing out after he offered to teach him how to use a knife was probably because of his stomach ulcers not because FF is terrified of Andrew stabbing him.

Nicky is the only member of the Foxes that FF regularly seeks out on his own to hang out with and Nicky just loves how hard Andrew and Neil are trying not to be jealous about it.

“I want to ask Smith if he wants to come spend Thanksgiving Break with us.” Andrew says out of the blue a week before the aforementioned break when it’s just Aaron, Neil, Nicky and himself in Nicky’s dorm room.

Nicky thinks about FF talking about going back to his hometown in Washington State and how he waxed poetic about spending Thanksgiving Break with his Grandma and how he was going to eat his weight in pie and Macaroni and Cheese.

“He’s planning on going and seeing his grandma. He won’t shut up about it.” Nicky says still glad that FF has a family member like his grandma.

Everyone else in the room look at him.

“He won’t shut up about it?” Aaron asks with an eyebrow raised. Aaron likes FF just fine and appreciates how FF has helped Katelyn start to grasp the fundamentals of the German language so quickly so she can understand what’s being said. “So what he said it twice?” He continues.

Nicky remembers FF’s ability for catastrophizing every conversation with the Foxes into one where it comes out that he speaks Russian and Andrew stabs him. As far as the other Foxes are concerned he’s a man of few words.

“He’s been talking about it all month. If I hear about his grandma’s apple pie recipe one more time I might demand he sneak a slice back for me through TSA.” Nicky loves stoking the flames, especially when the fire is harmless. He watches Aaron shrug and the skin around both Neil and Andrew’s mouths tightens. “You can ask him, the worst he can say is No.” Nicky shrugs.

Nicky is there when Andrew does ask him and he can see the prolonged internal scream of terror on the utterly blank face (or maybe he just imagines it.) and in a way Nicky is a little sad when FF shakes his head and says “No, I have plans with my Grandma.” In an utterly blank voice that means he has functionally blue-screened before turning and walking towards the nearest door so he can reboot in solitude.

“The offer stands if you change your mind.” Neil says and Nicky is impressed with the seemingly very casual thumbs up FF gives as he power walks away.

A little less than a week later Nicky finds Andrew next to FF and FF looking down at a cancelled flight notification after coming in from a truly monumental storm.

Andrew offers Thanksgiving in Columbia again.

Nicky tries to stop it from happening he can see that FF is a little lost in his disappointment over not being able to see his grandma and not thinking clearly but before he can snap him out of it.

“Sure.”

Characters:

Neil Josten

He has those two crooked teeth at the sides of his mouth that look like ‘fangs’ and big two front teeth (me too, me too😔)

Wears caps backwards like a freak loser weirdo

He doesn’t care much about facial piercings but he ends up getting a few more ear piercings after awhile (and then he got a tongue piercing because someone told him he wouldn’t)

Regularly walks into glass doors and poles by accident and tries to play it off and act cool when really he just looks like an absolute dumbass

Sneezes like an old man

He wakes up from nightmares sometimes thinking his legs are gone and panics before realising that he’s okay and that he’s safe

His mum did his ear piercings for him as another way to change his appearance

Once woke up from a nightmare and punched Andrew instead of Andrew waking up from a nightmare and punching him. Andrew had never woken up so confused in his life and Neil burst out laughing while apologising and he immediately forgot about what his nightmare was about

Andrew Minyard

Once he starts relaxing more while sleeping in the same bed as Neil he starts sleep talking and it’s always about something ridiculous or completely random

I’ve said this so many times but idc. Andrew didn’t have any piercings until he moved in with Aaron and Nicky because Aaron has piercings and Andrew thought they were cool

Is good at baking and enjoys it but if you held a gun to his head and told him to cook dinner the gun would go off

When he was a kid he was really into space and constellations and sometimes he’ll point them out while on the roof with Neil

Covers his mouth with his hand or turns his face away when he laughs

He has Arfid? I think that’s what it’s called

Hides away whenever he’s sick because as a child people have gotten angry at him for being sick as it was ‘inconvenient’.

Aaron Minyard

Has slight claustrophobia from when Andrew locked him inside the bathroom. It’s not that bad most of the time but sometimes if the door gets stuck for a second or he’s in a small room for too long then he silently freaks out (he also hates going inside lifts)

Was really big on dinosaurs as a kid. his favourite teddy was a little terradactyl (idfk how to spell it I’ve been trying for ten minutes😭) and he still keeps it under his pillow

Gives the most nastiest looks to people without even realising

Mumbles to himself a lot about the things he’s doing like a narrator

The type of person to not know where their glasses are when they are on top of their head

Whenever he does something that makes him think the person he’s with will get angry with him he either freezes or makes himself smaller

Aaron has a weird thing with being perceived and will often stop doing something (like reading or whatever) if someone sees him/walks in until they go away.

Kevin Day

He’s autistic but only got diagnosed when he was in the foxes (like a few months or so after Wymack finding out he’s his dad and stuff)

Scared if butterflies the same way people are scared of wasps and bees

Sleeps face down and snores really loudly but is in denial about it

He has a keyring that he carries around with him everywhere because he was going to give it to Jean but never got the chance and now he feels it’s a bit late to do it now

The foxes all got Wymack a Father’s Day mug with their names signed on it once. It was Dans idea and it was a moustache on the bottom of it

She LOVES maximalist gold jewellery and is covered in it most of the time

During and after her time with the foxes she keeps in touch with her old work sisters and does secret Santa with them every year

They were all weary of Katelyn’s boyfriend being Aaron grumpy loser pants Minyard but they eventually warmed up to him

When Melissa/Marissa(?) first joined the vixens after being in the foxes she struggled fitting in with everyone. Katelyn was the first friend she made on the team

Most of them are probably the nicest people you will meet in Palmetto and couldn’t care less about the foxes but a lot of them absolutely despise the foxes and want nothing to do with them

Katelyn has her own little group of friends in the vixens who Aaron eventually joined and is now the main source of their gossip (he mainly bitches about Neil and Andrew)

Andrew and Neil

Andrew runs cold and has to sleep like he’s hibernating for the winter while Neil runs hot and needs a fan (Andrew hates the fan. It is enemy #1)

The cats were Andrews ‘idea’. (He found them outside and took them home without saying anything)

Neil has had to carry drunk andrew a few times because Andrew likes being difficult

The team all have AT LEAST one photo of them sleeping together . On the couch, in the bus, in their bed, ON THE ROOF? They all have one

Andrew enjoys shopping and has a wardrobe full to the brim with clothes. Neil just wears Andrews clothes most of the time

Aaron buys flowers for Katelyn every single time he comes over to see her. When they get a home together he buys her new flowers every week

After he died the foxes photo wall had a photo of him put up with his name and birth to death dates. Allison is the one who picked the photo

Allison always manhandled Seth into doing his skincare and eyebrows etc because she was NOT going to have a scruff as a boyfriend (he secretly enjoyed it)

He liked it when she scratched his back because of her long fake nails

She was the first real girlfriend Seth had (and the last)

Allison and Renee

Allison helps Renee dye her hair when Andrew isn’t around to help (sometimes they both help her at the same time)

Renee is silently a little shy around Allison and gets flustered at all the compliments and praise Allison gives her (Allison is head over heels and is very very much flustered but she can’t let people know that🙄🙄)

After Seth died Allison and Renee stopped dating for a while. Allison needed some time to herself and Renee was okay with that

Renee and Seth are low-key best friends (obviously! they have the same girlfriend) but pretend to be enemies in a way that’s like almost as if they are at war against each-others kingdom LMAO

They all go on dates together but they also take turns going on dates

Seth helped allison help dye Renee’s hair once and accidentally got the dye in his and Allison hair. He was never aloud to help again

Allison sleeps in the middle and they rotate the spooning lmao. One night Seth spoons Allison while Allison spoons Renee and another night it’ll be the other way around. Sometimes they are both just curled into Allison 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Stephanie loves both Allison and Seth and often invited them over for dinner

When Nicky first moved back to take in the twins he and Erik called almost every single night. Nicky was so tired sometimes that he’d fall asleep while Erik was speaking

Nicky only taught the twins basic greetings and manners in German so that when they meet Erik they could at least greet each other but the twins learnt it fluently in their own time without Nicky knowing

Abby and Wymack

They got legally married but instead of a wedding they had a dinner party at their house

They cook together almost every night (Abby is cooking and Wymack is TRYING to cook)

They go on a date every Friday night if they can

They are both very private about their relationship and keep to themselves instead of parading their love around for everyone to see

Abby helps Wymack shave most of the time because he #sucks

Aaron was a little awkward about their slowly forming friendship and often tried pushing Matt away but Matt was a little oblivious to it

Nicky was the one that bought Andrew his armbands. Nicky took them shopping for some extra things like clothes and school supplies etc before they went home and Andrew picked them up, Nicky saw him looking at them and told him he can get them if he wants (Nicky never knew why Andrew wanted them until thanksgiving)

Nicky cut the twins hair for them up until the left collage. To begin with it was just Aaron’s hair he did but eventually Andrew trusted him enough for him to cut his too (I don’t think Andrew would like a hairdressers due to a stranger having to touch him and I just think Aaron would hate getting his hair cut)

They had movie nights together before collage every now and again but didn’t have the time for them once they joined the foxes. One night, after the books take place, Nicky asked if the wanted to have one and they ended up meeting in Aaron’s dorm to watch it. Aaron fell asleep against Nicky’s shoulder and while Andrew fell asleep last at the other side of their make shift sofa bed thing

Aaron and Nicky met once or twice when they were little but Aaron doesn’t remember

They have a groupchat and Nicky has the twins contacts saved as ‘thing 1’ and ‘thing 2’

A part of Nicky was upset Andrew never told him he was gay and at some point he asked him if it was because he felt like he couldn’t and Andrew looked him up and down and asked if he was being serious LMAO

Aarons had glasses since he was little but Andrew only got his after moving in with Nicky

Aaron and Andrew eventually just end up sharing most of their clothes either each other after awhile

Andrew doesn’t gossip but will slide Allison information he’s heard, Renee doesn’t gossip and doesn’t particularly enjoy listening to it, Neil doesn’t gossip but he’ll listen if Allison is, Allison loves gossip and looses her mind when she’s with them

Renee and Andrew have a video of neil and Allison doing karaoke and dancing while drunk in the dorms but nobody else knows about them (not even Neil and Allison)

Allison and Andrew are the best gift givers on the team🫡

Allison put glam makeup on Neil once for fun and the look and Andrews face had them in stitched laughing

I think it would be cute if Allison and Renee adopted a daughter in the future and she would LOVE Andrew and Neil and always want them to ‘come over and play’

^^^when she and Andrew get closer, there will be a few times she’ll be looking, pick something up and go “you’re buying this for Andrew” and shove it into Neil’s hands

Allison made all Neil’s social media accounts and showed him how to change things like his profile info and how to post. All he’s ever EVER posted is a selfie he has with Allison, a picture of Andrew + the cats and a group photo of the foxes

My second favourite Nicky Hemmick headcanon lately is this:

Nicky fell first, but Erik fell so much harder.

Like Nicky keeps talking about this german god over and over and over and he mentions to Neil how starstruck he was when Erik came to pick him up when he flew in to Germany and it's so clear, that Nicky was obsessed from the first second.

But the idea of Erik, half-way through his teenage self discovery, at the age of like 16, picking up this anxious, nervous, silent american and thinking "wow what a weird kid" is so dear to me. Because then Erik starts to like him when he makes a joke in the middle of their family dinner, and starts to like him when he starts to smile more and answers all the stupid "so you are american" questions their classmates ask him and suddenly Erik is falling in love bit by bit and by the end of it, he is willing to send Nicky back to US, because he knows Nicky will come back.

And all the foxes think that Nicky is the most smitten one in their relationship, until Erik and Katelyn are invated to a foxes trip and they see Erik watching Nicky drunkenly talk like he hang up the whole sky. And all of the foxes are just like "wow, this is what it is about" They are the longest healthy relationship in that friend group. They are the proof that it can work out no matter what.

Idk, I just like to think they are the only couple ever. They are the blueprint, idc what anyone says.

My Personal Fox Rankings

I saw @yourleftpinkytoe-blog do this and thought I'd give it a go! These are just my personal rankings and obviously I'd love to talk about why or hear about anyone else's.

Kevin Day (I relate to his mental health struggles and his need for perfection, he's giving gifted kid syndrome, autistic af)

Andrew Minyard (Devoted to his family, enforces his boundaries, relate to his mental health struggles, killing for his brother)

Neil Josten (Most of my love for him is because of his love for other characters, his loyalty and protectiveness over the family he found in the Foxes and his absolute devotion to respecting Andrew's boundaries)

David Wymack ("It's about second chances, Neil. Second, third, fourth, whatever, as long as you get at least one more than what anyone else wanted to give you." I think that covers all my reasoning)

Seth Gordon (We don't get to learn as much about him as the others but Seth hit me a lot harder than I've seen most people feel. He wanted to prove himself, he wanted to be better, he wanted to win. He's the what if. The almost. Every kid who couldn't be saved, Who gave up or was given up on a minute too soon. He was almost there. And then he was gone.)

Aaron Minyard (I have a weak spot for sibling relationships, killing for his brother, the urge to protect your siblings and to stay by your siblings side and at the same time wanting to prove you can be more or different or better than them, not understanding each other completely but knowing you stand and fall together always.)

Matt Boyd (100% projected every urge I've ever had to have a big brother onto him. The way he's always there on the Court to physically protect his teammates, he's big and strong and powerful, but off the Court he is kind and caring and gentle. He loves the Foxes and he has their backs. His relationship with Neil was everything.)

Nicky Hemmick (I loved his blatant and unavoidable queerness, for a character who has canonically been shammed and abused for his sexuality and coming from a world myself where I don't feel safe or brave enough to be unapologetically queer it's so beautiful to read. He took in the twins, he never gave up on them, never walked away. The twins weren't easy, not before the story started and not when we get to arrive in it, but he loves his family and he wants them to have better than he did, and that means something.)

Dan Wilds (Oh Captain my Captain. Dan is an amazing leader and my love for her comes from her devotion to her team. She is tough and she worked her ass off for the role she has, she's more than earned her share of respect. She believes in her team even after years of failing and bullshit.)

Betsy Dobson (The therapist we all dream of having. If Andrew could trust her I can't imagine anyone couldn't with enough time. She is a safe space and a constant, and clearly has patience for days with the twinyards as her clients. The fact that she provides hot chocolate is 100% a huge plus for me.)

Abby Winfield (Always there for the Foxes, whether that's patching them up, giving them a roof to sleep under, or cooking warm meals. She's a safe adult like Bee and Wymack and they are so very important and precious.)

Allison Reynolds (I love Allison, her being this low is NOT Allison hate, I simply did not connect with her as much as other characters, she is still dear to me, all of the Foxes are. She is devoted to the Foxes and found them somewhere safe to run off to and have some fun after shit went down. and even when the worst possible thing happens and she loses the man she loves she comes back ready to fight because she knows it's what he would've wanted.)

Renee Walker (Once again NOT Renee hate, all of those Foxes are dear to me. I had trouble with her "religious angel girl" attitude in a similar way to Neil, I just couldn't trust it. Renee is an amazing force within the Foxes, the bridge before Neil arrived, providing Andrew with an outlet and a friend, protecting the upperclassmen Foxes. I admire her for pulling herself out of darkness, even if I can't connect to the religious aspect, and I admire that she acknowledges and respects her old life, not burying it but not letting it control her future or her present day.

Nathaniel watched from his office doorway as Wymack spoke into the phone. "I'm cancelling practice for tonight, but I need you three at the court as soon as possible. No, Hemmick, none of you are in trouble." Wymack's eyes flicked up to Nathaniel. "Trust me, you wouldn't believe me if I told you. Just get your asses here."

A second later, Wymack was dialling the phone again, presumably to contact whoever his captain was now to notify the others of practice being cancelled. Neil might have apologised for his poor timing, but Nathaniel silently slipped away from Wymack's door, too jittery to keep staring at his old jersey on the wall.

He wandered into the Foxes' lounge and found not much had changed. He paced around, noting the new chairs mixed in with the ones Nathaniel remembered from his time here. There were still pictures stuck up all over the place with tape, just a notably larger amount. Quite a few of the faces covering the walls weren't familiar to him, but that was to be expected. Nathaniel's pacing came to a halt when he spotted an older picture in the corner.

It was the one of Nathaniel and Andrew at Upstate Regional Airport when he had whispered his real name into the scant space between them. It was the one he had stopped himself from ripping down, because he had been desperate to not disappear. He had been right — Wymack said they thought he was dead, but his face was still on these walls years later.

Nathaniel's hand came up and he touched the picture with revenant fingers. It was a small flicker of light in Nathaniel's dark world, but he feared it would snuff out if he breathed wrong. He didn't bother moving when he heard Wymack enter the room behind him, and Wymack hadn't yet decided what to say to the ghost that had appeared at his door.

Nathaniel didn't look away from the old picture until a familiar cheery voice came through the lounge door. "Coach, to what do we owe this special summons?"

Turning, Nathaniel spotted Nicky Hemmick sauntering into the room followed by an apathetic Aaron Minyard. He had missed them dearly, but they weren't his focus right now. The person who followed them in was, however. For a moment it didn't even matter how vacant the man looked, all that mattered was that he was there.

"Andrew."

For fuck’s sake, he adopted his ex-girlfriends son when he was escaping major abuse before he even knew he was ALSO his OWN biological son!!! The woman he loved had a kid and he took him in without hesitation and he didn’t even know! He didn’t even know!!! Wymack fights the media, the college courts, the legal courts, the fucking Mafia, all because he loves his kids and knows they deserve more than the world has ever given them. The cops make it to them a few minutes later. One makes a slow lap, jotting down the license plate number and presumably writing out descriptions of the extensive damage. On his second lap he has a camera out, and he shooes the Foxes out of his way with an impatient hand so he can get good shots. The other cop sweeps them with a tired look, pen poised above his notepad, and says, "Whose car is this?"

"Ours," Nicky said, raising a hand. "Well, it's in Andrew's name, but I'm on the insurance policy too. We're cousins, see. Nicky Hemmick and Andrew Minyard, room 317. You need the registration or anything, I can tell you where to find it, but I'd really rather not reach in and get it for you. Look inside the car and you'll understand why. No, really, look inside." The cop spared a glance for the car but said nothing about its sorry state. Neil guessed he'd stopped caring about sixty angry athletes ago. All he said was, "Did you see or hear anything unusual last night or this morning?" "Friday night on a college campus," Nicky said with an apologetic shrug. "You learn to tune things out if you want to get any sleep. Besides, our room faces the front of the building." "What about you?" the cop asked Aaron. "No," Aaron said. The cop looked to Andrew last. Andrew gazed back in unimpressed silence and took a slow drag off his cigarette. Nicky only gave him a couple seconds before answering for him. "He found out when I did. Renee stopped by and woke us up when she heard the news. Uh, Renee's our teammate." At the look the cop sent him for speaking up, Nicky shrugged. "Yeah, sorry. Andrew doesn't talk to cops. It's a long story and completely irrelevant. What else do you need to know?" The cop only had a couple more questions, some of which he aimed at Andrew despite Nicky's warning, the rest of which he split between Nicky and Aaron. Andrew stopped paying attention to the interview before long and let his gaze wander. Nicky filled in the gaps as quickly as he could, and eventually the cops moved on.

Fight So Dirty, Chapter Three

Chapter Summary: Neil is introduced to the rest of the monsters and his long lost love, Exy

Neil wasn’t sure when he fell asleep, only that he’d done so stupidly with his contacts in and was dealing with the consequences. He huffed and fished out eye drops from his bag and used them. It lessened the pain somewhat, but still, Neil knew he’d have to remove the contacts as soon as possible. 

He got up and stretched, sliding out of bed and running a hand through his hair. He looked at the alarm clock and saw that he’d only slept for two ish hours. Neil relaxed at that, thankful that he hadn’t slept the entire night through without changing and with his contacts in. Neil walked out of the bedroom and headed to the general area only to see three new strangers had arrived and he immediately tensed up.

Andrew had spotted him first, only sparing him a brief glance before turning his eyes back to the television. Then, what seemed to be a picture copy of Andrew looked at him and frowned, looking over at the others for an answer, and suddenly the other two were staring at him. Neil was fairly sure he looked stupid just standing there, but wasn’t sure what else to do really, and let them look their fill.

It wasn’t long until someone spoke up, that someone being Nicky Hemmick. Neil hoped he hid the “oh shit” feeling well. One vampire hunter was bad enough, now two? He’d fucked up majorly, unfortunately Neil knew that dashing out the door would be nothing less of suspicious, especially after the incident with his pulse earlier. 

A wide grin spread across Nicky’s face. “Andrew! You never said the new guy was such a looker!” And Neil had to resist the urge to frown, immediately deciding that Nicky was somebody to be cautious around. Nicky didn’t seem to pick up  on Neil’s discomfort and made room for Neil in the same bean bag as him. “Come on, sit down, we don’t bite!” Neil glanced at Andrew who seemed to be ignoring the entire exchange. Maybe not bite, but definitely stab. 

He accepted the offer and walked over to an empty bean bag, and saw Nicky’s smile twitch at that. 

“So,

Neil carefully surveyed the room and racked his brian to remember what he had known about each bounty hunter. Andrew and Nicky’s profiles were easy to recall however the other two were more difficult. Having 4 pairs of eyes watching him didn’t make it any easier.

Aaron Minyard. 20 years old, and the (somewhat) identical twin of Andrew. Unlike Andrew, Aaron didn’t wear twin bands with knives, nor did he appear to lift as much as Andrew. Although Aaron seemed less dangerous than Andrew (and although that’s probably true), he’s lethal in his own way. 

It was no secret that Aaron was in a premed program and was excelling in his medical career. His skills were demonstrated on the hunts with Andrew where Aaron would use the power of chemicals and toxins in bullets that would release once the poor vampire was hit, effectively injecting the quick release poison. If the bullet didn’t kill the vampire, the poison would.

Andrew was the brawn and Aaron was the brains it seemed. However, Neil couldn’t help but second guess that assumption when meeting the honey filled hazel that seemed to see through him. 

Kevin Day. 21 years old and six feet of toned muscle. His appearance was deceptive in that the short blonde dressed like a funeral attendee was much more deadly statically, however no matter what numbers say, a threat is a threat regardless. Especially to me, mused Neil. 

The vampire hunts weren’t new, but the increase in number of victims certainly skyrocketed after his transfer from Edgar Allen to Palmetto State. The reason would be unknown to the public, perhaps just a lack of competition would be the widespread idea. Neil knew better. He remembered keenly the bloodthirsty smile on Riko’s face the first time he saw him nearly a decade ago. Even more so, Neil remembered the way he treated his “younger brother” Kevin. There was no doubt in Neil’s mind that Riko kept Kevin firmly placed in second place.

Whether it be attributed to Kevin’s lack of confidence or efficiency’s sake, the taller man’s weapon of choice was a simple hand held pistol. 

Unlike Nicky, none of the other hunters in this room would be inclined to give Neil a chance to run. Not even Kevin. Especially not Kevin if he realized who Neil was and what his presence here in Fox Tower meant.

“Do you play?” Neil was startled out of his thoughts by Kevin’s unexpected question. He furrowed his brows and frowned.

“Play?”

“Yes. Play.”

Neil stared at Kevin dumbly, resulting in a scowl from the latter. “Play what?”

“Exy.”

He froze. Kevin knew. He had to know, why else would he ask? Neil shifted in the bean bag, sitting up just a little straighter. He could lie. He could lie and no doubt that would lead to more questions that he wouldn’t have the answers to. Or, Neil could tell the truth..which would result in questions he did have answers for. Answers that he couldn’t give.

“I can,” Neil slowly said, “but not like you” he quickly added.

Kevin snorted. “Obviously.” 

Neil wanted to wipe the amused look off the arrogant bastard’s face. Kevin beat him to the challenge. “Show me.”

It wasn’t a suggestion, and Neil found himself in a corner. Refusal wouldn’t be accepted. “I don’t have gear,” he argued feebly and was met with an unimpressed look from both blondes and Kevin and laughter from Nicky. 

“That’s a weird concern, don’t worry Neil! We have a bunch of extra gear, different racquets too!” Nicky offered eagerly, making Neil wish he never woke up from his nap.

He forced a smile onto his face, feeling the muscles in his cheeks groan from the effort of forming such unfamiliar features. “Oh. Perfect.” Neil knew his voice was flat, but he was tired. Sure maybe his plan was doomed from the start, but he didn’t expect it all to go downhill so fast. The moment Kevin figured him out this would be over. 

Still..Neil strongly remembered the weight of an exy racquet in his hands. He knew the rush of adrenaline when the ball got caught in his net, or rebounded off the plexiglass walls. Furthermore, Neil could feel the euphoria when the goal turned red with every shot made.

Thesis on Nicholas "Nicky" Hemmick

When I first read AFTG, Nicky was a pretty neutral character to me. Upon entering the fandom (back in 2015) I found out that many people aren't fond of him.

I didn't quite understand why, but I guessed it was because he doesn't match the vibe of the other characters, especially of the other monsters. He's so lively and extroverted compared to everyone else that it looks out of place.

Through the years I read the series again and again and every time all the Nicky hate sat a little wronger with me. As I grew attached to him, I was more and more willing to defend him, but honestly it wasn't a hill to die on.

Until some days ago. That's when I found out the real reason behind all the Nicky hate: the fandom has been hating him because he's apparently aphobic.

Now I'm ready to make this my hill to die on.

Are you fucking serious? He's hated because of that ONE line? "You can't not swing"?

That interactions had nothing to do with Neil's sexuality. Neil was taught the hard way that he absolutely can't date, so he doesn't. He might also be on asexual spectrum, but that's not what was being discussed here.

He said "I don't swing" as in "I don't date", because dating isn't an option, whether he wants to or not.

Nicky, a hopeless romantic, was surprised by this, definitely NOT in a hateful way.

I can't believe Nicky is pictured as hateful because of this when he's been the most loving person in the books.

Shall I remind you what he did for his family?

He was living in Germany with the love of his life, away from his homophobic parents, ready to stay there forever. Then suddenly his cousins don't have a mother anymore.

19 years old Nicky raised a middle finger to his life so he could run to them an take them in. He could have stayed in Germany, this wasn't his problem. It was never not ONCE his responsibility but he did out of love.

And to those saying Andrew doesn't care about him: "Family means something different with us because it has to. It's not about blood. It's not even about who we like. It's about who Andrew's willing to protect."

Andrew's not only willing to protect Nicky. He's ready to kill for him. In the old draft Erik was kill by the four men who attack Nicky, and Andrew hunted them down until he made each of them pay with life.

Nicky is as much of a protector as Andrew is, just in a different way. He gave the twins a place to call home, he worked his ass off to guarantee a future for them, he threw his whole life out of the window the second someone he barely knew needed him.

So don't you dare come at me saying Nicky is weak, creepy, aphobic or any other form of hateful thing. Nicky Hemmick deserves the world.
